Diego Costa backs Ronaldo for Ballon d'Or

    349773_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid star Diego Costa says he would give the Ballon d'Or to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The race for this year's prize is the closest in years, with the Real Madrid and Portugal man - who was crowned the world's best player for the first time back in 2008 - joined on a three-man shortlist for award by four-time winner Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery.

A host of high-profile figures have offered their backing to all three candidates, with the winner of the trophy set to be announced at a ceremony in Zurich on January 13.

Speaking prior to the 'Champions for Life' charity match at the Santiago Bernabeu on Monday evening, a journalist quizzed Costa over his choice, to which the 25-year-old simply replied: "Cristiano."

Both Ronaldo and Costa have enjoyed sensational starts to the season and have scored a remarkable 37 Liga goals between them already.

:(Rooney a doubt for Tottenham clash with Van Persie ruled out

    349706_heroa.jpg

Robin van Persie has been ruled out of Manchester United's Premier League fixture against Tottenham on Wednesday while Wayne Rooney remains a doubt with a groin injury.

The Netherlands international has been sidelined since December 10 with a thigh problem.

Rooney, meanwhile, missed Saturday's 1-0 win over Norwich City and did not train on Tuesday ahead of the match against Tim Sherwood's side at Old Trafford.

"Robin is not quite ready, we don't think," David Moyes told reporters. "He is not too far away.

"With Wayne we need to wait and see. He has not trained today so we will need to assess it tomorrow."

Moyes also reiterated the club are open to securing new signings in the January transfer window but admits the month may be difficult.

"We would always look to try and add players but I am not sure January is a brilliant month to do business. We will be out there looking as I am sure everyone else will be," said the Scot.

'I'm on top of the world' - Pardew delighted with Newcastle revival

    352952_heroa.jpg

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has hailed the club's turnaround from last year following their excellent first half of the season.

Pardew's men sit eighth in the Premier League going into their New Year's Day clash at West Brom and are just four points adrift of the Champions League places.

Newcastle's performances this season are in stark contrast to last campaign, when the St James' Park outfit finished a mere five points above the relegation zone in 16th place.

And, although Newcastle lost 1-0 to league leaders Arsenal in their final game of 2013, Pardew has been delighted with the revival he has been able to engineer.

"I feel like I am standing on top of the world at the moment compared to where I was last year," he told reporters. "You have to have faith in your ability and faith in the work that you do.

"As a manager, you know you have ups and downs unless you are at one of the very, very big clubs and are fortunate enough to have the finance to have 22 full internationals, like Manchester City and Chelsea and Manchester United and Arsenal.

"We haven't got that luxury, so it's not a great day every week, and you have to accept that. There are a lot of games to be played between now and the end of May, and we are in great shape."

Pardew is hopeful of getting back to winning ways at the Hawthorns, but feels that Newcastle may have to score more than once to achieve that.

"They are usually tight games and it's difficult at their place," Pardew added. "I always feel they score, West Brom, when they are home, so you have got to get two or three goals if you are going to win.

"We have got a chance of getting those three points and I would be absolutely delighted if we could get three points at West Brom."

Del Bosque warns against Spain complacency

    340972_heroa.jpg

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has admitted he is worried about his team's mindset ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The reigning world and double European champions were convincingly beaten 3-0 by Brazil in the final of the Confederations Cup during the summer and Del Bosque has warned his stars not to rest on the laurels of their previous tournament successes.

"They are players who have won a great deal, almost everything, and they see things through different eyes compared with five or six years ago," Del Bosque told AS.

"That is the only fear I have. It is fundamental to be humble, sporting and good lads, nice guys. We have to forget about the past and not revel in what we won in the years before.

"We are going to another World Cup, a different one, in a different country and on a different continent, and we have to go there with the same spirit as in South Africa."That's the most important thing."

Del Bosque reiterated his desire for his team to show "humility", and acknowledged his side will be favourites to defend their crown.

Spain – who will face 2010 finalists Netherlands, Chile and Australia in Group B – will face stiff competition from several nations in Brazil, something Del Bosque is well aware of."Humility is not an empty word," he said.

"When I ask for it, it is because I know it is the path to success. Spain has a good national team and is not inferior to anyone but we must be cautious."We are the team to beat and there are powerful opponents, mainly the South Americans including Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and Chile.

"Then there are the Europeans, teams like Germany, Holland or Portugal. It is not easy and we have to show respect for all our opponents."

Chelsea announce £49.4m losses for 2013

    354846_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have announced losses totalling £49.4 million for the year ending June 30, 2013.

The group turnover of £255.8m is a club record, but becoming the first reigning champions to be eliminated at the Champions League group stage saw a drop in income.

However, including the £1.4m profit from 2012, Chelsea insist they are at no risk of falling prey to the Financial Fair Play regulations.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said: "From the very beginning of the current ownership of Chelsea, a long-term objective was financial sustainability, and the subsequent implementation of Financial Fair Play by Uefa and by the Premier League has brought that to the top of the agenda for football clubs.

"We are pleased therefore that we will meet the stipulations set down by Uefa in their first assessment period, and by our own analysis we are progressing from a commercial viewpoint as well as continuing to add trophies to our collection, which we never lose sight of as our most important goal."

Chief executive Ron Gourlay added: "For Chelsea to achieve a record level of turnover despite our first group-stage elimination from the Champions League shows we have structured our business and are growing in the correct way for long-term stability.

"Our philosophy is we build upon success on the pitch and although in these financial results we haven't repeated the sizeable profits made the previous year from player transfers, we believe the age profile of the existing squad means we will benefit from that investment for many years to come.

"A successful team builds awareness around the world and our increased commercial revenues in 2012-13 and new or extended partnership deals demonstrate we are working hard to capitalise on that."

Besiktas: We want to sign Ronaldinho

    273520_heroa.jpg

Besiktas officials have confirmed that an audacious plan is in place to try to lure Ronaldinho to the club.

The 33-year-old is currently out of contract and available on a free transfer after his current deal expired with Atletico Mineiro, and Besiktas have acted quickly in an attempt to secure the services of the soon-to-be sought after samba star.

Turkish media are reporting that high-ranking Besiktas personnel have met with Ronaldinho's brother and agent Roberto Assis, although the club have yet to quantify this themselves.

However, Besiktas board member Ahmet Kavalci did tell reporters: "We want to sign Ronaldinho."

Yet the player's personal terms are preventing a deal being sealed, with Besiktas keen for sponsors to foot the bill for the former World Player of the Year's salary.

"His wage is too high for us. We need a sponsor for him. We haven't had an agreement with a sponsor yet and this is the only reason for not singing him," Kavalci continued.

And Kavalci also suggested a deal was soon to be concluded for England international defender Joleon Lescott.

"We are negotiating with Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott. There will be some important development about this at Thursday."

Alonso out to end Champions League heartache

    350428_heroa.jpg

Xabi Alonso insists that Real Madrid must reach the Champions League final this season after a heartbreaking hat-trick of near misses.

The Blancos have been eliminated in the last four of Europe's premier club competition for the last three campaigns, at the hands of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Those defeats have elongated Real's quest for a 10th European Cup success but Alonso says the painful memories will act as an incentive for Carlo Ancelotti's men to reach this season's final in Lisbon on May 24."In recent years, playing for Real Madrid, being knocked out of the semi-finals of the Champions League was very painful," the Spanish international told Club del Deportista"That is why our aim is to reach the final this year and put those defeats behind us."

Real have began this season's competition in fine form, winning five of their six Champions League Group B games to set up a last 16 clash with German outfit Schalke.

    Pellegrini denies Dzeko exit rumours

    355088_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has refuted rumours that striker Edin Dzeko could depart the club in the January transfer window.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international has been limited to just seven starts in the Premier League this season, largely due to the form of fellow forwards Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo.

Dzeko gave a timely reminder of his importance to the squad by scoring the winner in a battling 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday and, with Aguero currently sidelined with a calf injury, he looks set to get further opportunities.

With the 27-year-old set to feature for his country at World Cup 2014 rumours have circulated that Dzeko could depart in search of regular first-team football.

But Pellegrini insists it is a situation that he has never given any serious consideration to.

"There was never any chance of Dzeko going in January," said Pellegrini. "He is a very important player for the team.

"If you look at the last month I think Dzeko was one of the players that played the most minutes in December.

"He has continued to be a very important player for us. He [is] always a player wants to play every game but it is impossible with the amount of games that we have to play.

"I think he is happy here. He is an important striker and could have a lot of offers from other clubs but there is never a chance of him leaving."

With the transfer window set to reopen on Wednesday, Pellegrini confirmed that he would consider whether he would need to make any additions to his squad, but insisted that for now there are no developments on player arrivals.

He added: "For the moment, we are not talking about that but we are always analysing what we need and what we don't need.

"The possibility of the transfer window is there for every club. We will see what we are going to do in the next days."

Wenger would consider 'special' Arsenal signing

    355109_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he could be tempted to add to his squad in the January transfer window but only for a "special" signing.

The Premier League leaders secured arguably the biggest capture of the close-season in England when they paid a reported €47 million to bring Germany international Mesut Ozil to the club from Real Madrid.

The likes of Aaron Ramsey, Ozil and Olivier Giroud have since produced a series of impressive performances this season, helping the club to set the title pace as they head into 2014.

But Arsenal have been light on options in the forward department and Wenger has admitted he is looking to bring a top signing in if he can.

"I don't know if we will do anything. We are on alert and if something special comes up we will not turn it down," he said.

"We are not desperate because we have a big depth in the squad, we have shown that. The midfield at West Ham and Newcastle United was completely different. We changed three players and had a very strong team."

However, Wenger has ruled out a renewed approach for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez after a summer pursuit that grabbed the headlines this year.

"There won't be any approach (for Suarez). He has signed a new contract. (Nicklas) Bendtner is back, (Lukas) Podolski is back."
