    article-0-1A8AB16C00000578-983_634x390.jpg

Chilean Pellegrini, who replaced Roberto Mancini as City boss last summer, secured the award for the first time after guiding his side to a seven-match unbeaten run during the month.City won six of their seven Premier League games in December - they only dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Southampton - including important home victories over title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.

The 60-year-old claimed the award ahead of three other nominees, Manchester United boss David Moyes, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and Everton's Roberto Martinez.Brendan Rodgers, Arsene Wenger, Mauricio Pochettino and Alan Pardew are the four previous winners this season.Suarez was named the Premier League player of the month following his record-breaking goalscoring streak during December.

    article-0-1A8AB10800000578-760_634x468.jpg

The Uruguay international failed to find the net in the 3-1 defeat at Hull at the start of the month but he then hit a purple patch starting with a four-goal haul in the 5-1 demolition of Norwich at Anfield. He followed that up with two goals in each of the next three games against West Ham, Tottenham and Cardiff to become the first player to score 10 goals in a calendar month in the Premier League.

Suarez won the award ahead of Manchester City stars Alvaro Negredo, Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure.England and Everton starlet Ross Barkley was also nominated along with Arsenal's Theo Walcott, who has subsequently been ruled out for the season.

Suarez, the Premier League's top goalscorer, said: "It's so important when you work hard on the pitch and they recognise it when you win these prizes."On the pitch I try to help Liverpool and I try to help the squad and I think also for the confidence it is very good."If Liverpool continue in this level we can finish in the top four, which we want."

Montpellier 1-1 Monaco: Niang rebound denies Ranieri's men in Ligue 1 return

    358030hp2.jpg

Monaco were held to a 1-1 draw by Montpellier on Friday after M'Baye Niang returned to Ligue 1 in style by scoring the crucial equaliser.

Layvin Kurzawa had put the visitors ahead with an unorthodox shouldering of the ball from James Rodriguez's free kick, which looped into the top corner to put Laurent Nicollin's behind at the Stade de la Mosson.

Niang, on loan from AC Milan, made a goalscoring debut for la Paillade in midweek in the Coupe de France and made it two goals in as many games by converting the rebound to his initial penalty to deny Monaco their fourth Ligue 1 away win in a row.

The hosts were dominant for much of the first half but were fortunate to go in level at the break after Remy Cabella fluffed his lines one-on-one with les Rouge et Blanc goalkeeper Danijel Subasic.

The second half was a more balanced affair, with goals at either end and half-chances galore from both sets of players, and a draw was a fair result in the first Ligue 1 game of 2014.

Pre-match favourites Monaco unquestionably started the stronger of the two sides. Moutinho was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet with a curled shot from 25 yards, as goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren reacted at the last millisecond to beat the shot behind.

The game fell into a lull as Monaco pressed the hosts but failed to finish off their finely-crafted chances. Falcao, in his first Ligue 1 start since November, looked rusty with his finishing as his efforts either sailed over, wide or dribbled harmlessly into the goalkeeper's arms.

Montpellier were mostly limited to passing around in the middle of the park in the first third of the match, though Cabella was a bright spark as he unsuccessfully called for a penalty in the 34th minute after claiming he was dragged down in the box by Kurzawa.

Cabella then should have put the hosts ahead with half-time lingering, after Eric Abidal played him onside, but the French attacker got the ball tangled in his feet and fumbled the shot, allowing Monaco shot-stopper Danijel Subasic to pounce.

After the break, Ranieri's men remained under pressure as la Paillade looked to prevent the visitors from leaving with a point or three. A majestic diving interception from Jeremy Toulalan denied Montpellier captain Hilton from essentially tapping in five minutes into the second half.

Against the run of play, Monaco sneaked into the lead on 52 minutes. Rodriguez's gorgeous free kick was looped into the top left-hand corner from 10 yards off Kurzawa's shoulder.

The hosts reacted strongly and Cabella finally got the penalty he had craved all game after tricking Monaco skipper Abidal into tripping him up 10 yards from goal.

Subasic initially saved Niang's shot but the Milan loanee followed up to convert the spot kick and level the score with 22 minutes to play.

Les Rouge et Blanc almost grabbed their second goal at the Stade de la Mosson within 60 seconds of the restart, but Emmanuel Riviere's diagonal through ball after bursting into the box trickled inches too far ahead of Falcao's outstretched leg.

At the other end, with 15 minutes to go, Cabella hit a pot shot straight at Subasic, as the home fans found full voice in anticipation of a potential upset.

However, it was not to be and both teams shared the spoils - with Montpellier rooted still to fourth-from-bottom while Monaco sit two points adrift of leaders Paris Saint-Germain having both played a game more than every other team in the division.

Badstuber: I'm burning to get back for Bayern

    206003_heroa.jpg

Long-term Bayern Munich absentee Holger Badstuber has expressed his "burning" desire to get back on the pitch for the club.

The Germany international, 24, has been sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury since December 2012 but is training with the team during the Bundesliga winter break in Doha, where he says the Bavarians are giving him plenty of time and encouragement to recover fully.

"I’m burning to get back out on the pitch. I miss the game," Badstuber told die Roten's official website. "But I mustn’t overdo it on the knee.

"The main thing for me is to get fit again. Bayern are giving me all the time in the world. I know approximately how much longer it’ll go on. But I also know just how long it takes to get back into the swing of it after such a long break.

"I’m delighted to be part of the team again, though. Pep Guardiola is making sure I feel good and he’s showing me I still belong."

Contrastingly, Arjen Robben has enjoyed an excellent season so far and, after missing out on Bayern's Club World Cup victory due to a knee injury, the winger believes he will be fit in time for the German league restart in two weeks' time.

"I think I just need a couple more days," the Dutchman said. "Everything’s on track. It’s all going brilliantly and positively."

Guardiola's table-toppers get 2014 under way with a trip to Borussia Monchengladbach on January 24.

Nainggolan warns Juve: Roma still in title race

    357795_heroa.jpg

Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has warned Juventus that they are still fighting for the Scudetto, despite dropping points in Turin last weekend.

The Giallorossi were reduced to nine men as they were beaten 3-0 by the defending champions, seemingly cutting short their title punt as the Bianconeri carved out a formidable eight-point lead at the Serie A summit.

Nainggolan made his debut under Rudi Garcia in a 1-0 Coppa Italia win over Sampdoria in midweek, having joined from Cagliari a few days prior, and he thinks that Antonio Conte's men should not presume to have a third Scudetto in a row in the bag.

"We are in the title race, because it is only eight points and Juventus still have to play in Rome," the Belgian told reporters on Friday. "Roma cannot go wrong too many times more, but as long as the maths make it possible then you have to believe.

"I am convinced that this team can do well and cause trouble for many teams. I will try to provide my contribution and to win something.

"I think the ambition of every player is to get as high as possible. I have come to Roma with the thought of doing well here and getting as high as I can."

Nainngolan was subject of much transfer interest from the likes of Napoli and AC Milan, but he says that the Stadio Olimpico side's persistence paid dividends and that he wants to show his worth to the club.

"Roma tried to sign me last year," the 25-year-old revealed. "The project following a disappointing year is important, there were other teams, but I think that this project is the best for me and that is why I have chosen Roma.

"Certainly it is very important to play well for this team, they have invested in me. I am looking to repay everyone, demonstrating so with my performances in the field.

"I have played four years as an inside-left midfielder, but I will do my best anywhere, to help the team. The team selection will be down to the coach. I am convinced of my qualities, I am a fighter and I will try to make it difficult for the coach."

Roma host Genoa on Sunday as they look to bounce back from being beaten by Juve last weekend.

'I'll wage war to keep Casillas' - Ancelotti

    312032_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has said he will "wage war" to keep hold of Iker Casillas and hopes that the Real Madrid captain retires at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spain international has been out of the Blancos' first team for a year now, having picked up a hand injury in January 2012 and failing to usurp Diego Lopez as No.1 under Jose Mourinho and subsequently Ancelotti.

"It was not an easy decision, I have two goalkeepers of high quality, the best two in the world," the Italian trainer told RNE.

"I started with Diego as my No.1, but then did not consider that Casillas would not play. Rotating goalkeepers is not the most desirable thing, it is not easy, but they have understood.

"I'll fight the same way I did for Xabi. This team have key players representing the club and I will wage war for Casillas to finish his career here, in Madrid."

Ancelotti also suggested that Real Madrid lagging behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in la Liga could be down to their alteration in style under him from Mourinho's methods the prior three seasons.

"We're not doing as well because we changed philosophy this season," he added. "Last year's Madrid played more on the counterattack, we want to play with more possession. It takes time to adjust.

"It will take a little longer to catch Barcelona and Atletico. I am aware that some people's patience is limited, which is normal because Madrid have to try to win every year.

"If we beat Espanyol this weekend then we'll have 47 points halfway through the season, which is not bad. But Barca or Atletico could have 52."

Xabi Alonso confirmed he had signed a new Madrid deal in midweek and Ancelotti says the only other player like the Spaniard is Juventus veteran Andrea Pirlo, while praising Luka Modric for improving while the star was injured.

"Xabi is an important signing for his quality and experience," the former Chelsea and AC Milan boss continued. "Losing him [would have been awful] because there is not another player like him at his level.

"You can only compare Pirlo, who is 35 years old. Everybody loves Xabi here, he brings more balance to the team. Luka is much improved, though, he has shown his ability."

    Moyes attacks Fergie critics

    357089_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has attacked critics who have suggested Sir Alex Ferguson's presence at Manchester United matches is detrimental to the club's chances of success.

Ferguson retired at the end of last season but has since been seen in the stands of the majority of United's games this campaign - most recently alonside Sir Bobby Charlton at the 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semi-final.

Yet Moyes refused to entertain the idea that this brought added pressure on his own position, instead praising Sir Alex for the support he has afforded the former Everton boss.

Speaking to MUTV, Moyes said: "It tells you that people don't know me and don't know Sir Alex. People are saying it because they have no idea about how it works.

"Sir Alex has been fantastic. He has been incredibly supportive and is only there to help me.

"I have a conversation with him when I need it and I tend to see him for a minute or two after the games.

"I have found him great and it has been the same with Sir Bobby and Bryan Robson.

"All the people around the club have been great as have all the former players, in the main.

"But there are a lot of people out there who are trying to twist the words or make out it is a problem. I have no problem with it at all."

United have lost their last three fixtures and face a trip to Hull in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Barca will risk Messi - Simeone

    357572_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone believes Barcelona will risk Lionel Messi in Saturday's highly anticipated clash at the Vicente Calderon.

The Argentine has been out of action in La Liga since his injury in early November but, after a goalscoring return in the Copa del Rey in midweek, the Rojiblancos coach suspects that Gerardo Martino will start with the attacker this weekend.

"As a fellow Argentine, I am extremely happy that Messi is back at his best," Simeone told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

"We need to win the World Cup and he is a decisive player who can help us to do it. I really hope that he can play his best football during these next few months.

"Will we see a Barca without Messi tomorrow? I don’t think so. They have a lot of variations to their game but I can’t see him not taking part in tomorrow’s match."

Atletico have been extremely impressive - domestically and in the Champions League - this season and Simeone hopes that his second-placed Liga side can replicate the draws they battled for in the Supercopa earlier in the 2013-14 season.

"It’s not a final. It’s only a league game," he added. "Now it’s our turn to face them. It’s a very, very important game but still just a league game like any other.

"We will be attempting to play our own game and utilise our weapons. We want to put in a similar performance to the one we put in against them in the Supercopa.

"Right now, we are in a very privileged position in the table and staying there depends on us alone."

If either the Blaugrana or the Rojiblancos win at the Calderon this weekend, the victor will go top of La Liga outright by three points.

    Marotta: No offers for Pogba

    357209_heroa.jpg

Juventus director general Giuseppe Marotta insists that the club has yet to receive any offers for midfield ace Paul Pogba.

The France international has been linked with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks and the 20-year-old was recently pictured in the shirt of the Ligue 1 champions.

However, Marotta claims that no formal approach has been made by PSG - or any other club for that matter.

“Pogba? That's just talk,” he told Tuttosport. “We have not received any offers.”

After nailing down a regular birth in Antonio Conte's line-up in his first, title-winning season in Serie A, Pogba is now being touted as one of Europe's brightest young talents.

Consequently, Juventus are currently trying to fend off potential suitors by tying the former Manchester United man down to a new four-year contract.

Martino: Messi might miss Atletico clash

    357575_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino insists he has not yet decided whether Lionel Messi will start Saturday's clash with Atletico Madrid.

The two sides meet in a top-of-the-table encounter this weekend, with both sitting level on 49 points at La Liga's summit.

Despite Messi scoring two goals in Wednesday's Copa del Rey win over Getafe, Martino would not be drawn on whether his star man was ready to command a starting berth having recently returned from a hamstring problem.

"Messi is looking good," Martino told reporters. "He had a brilliant half hour against Getafe. It's true that he's coming off a long period of injury and we have to assess him.

"We have to decide if he's ready to play a full 90 minutes in a match of this kind. I think he's tremendously focused on what's happening here at Barca and he's developing after his injury and that's quite normal."Now it's just a question of whether we think he's ready to be on the bench for 30-35 minutes and then come on, or play a full 90 minutes."We'll speak to him to see how he's feeling, because the fact is that when a player starts a game he wants to finish the game."

Martino confirmed that Dani Alves and Neymar would be back in contention after spells on the sidelines, while Ibrahim Afellay could apparently return to the matchday squad this weekend."I always say the same," the Argentinian continued. "If [Neymar and Alves] are in the squad for the game, they have a chance of playing in the game.

"Dani was a little ill. He had flu when he came back from the break. Neymar was in squad for Getafe game but he was indisposed and he couldn't play but has been training well the last couple of days."Afellay doesn't yet have the medical green light, but he is training almost normally, so I think it's the right time to call him up."

This will be the first meeting between Barca and Atletico in La Liga this season, but they met in the Supercopa when Barca won on away goals after two draws and the Catalans' coach expects his players to raise their game at the Vicente Calderon.

"We've had a good look at what happened in the Supercopa," added Martino. "It could be a similar game to what we saw then, but it could be a more open game.
"We're very much better than we were five months ago.

"I think Atletico Madrid's level has never dropped. They started the season at a very high level and they've maintained that level over the last five months."

Rotariu claims talks with Manchester United

    358001_heroa.jpg

Dinamo Bucharest winger Dorin Rotariu claims he has held extensive talks with Manchester United officials.

The 18-year-old has scored five goals in 17 matches in the Romanian top flight this season and has been monitored by scouts from United.

Rotariu has also made one appearance for Romania’s Under-21 side.

"It was a meeting in Bucharest with Manchester United officials with whom I chatted for around two hours,” Rotariu told Romanian newspaper Ring.

“They wanted to know me personally, to see what kind of guy I am, what character I have. We didn’t just discuss football.

“I was told they are monitoring me. This gives me ambition and motivates me. When a club the size of Manchester has you in sight, you can only be proud.

“Honestly, I did not expect to happen quickly, but I tell you I will not go to your head. going to focus even more on every game and to give everything in training.

“I feel very well at Dinamo and I want to win trophies here. The cup is important for me and my colleagues.”

Atletico-Barcelona won't decide title race, insists Fabregas

    354879_heroa.jpg

Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas has played down the significance of Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with Atletico Madrid, claiming it will have little impact on the Liga title race.

The Blaugrana lead the table on goal difference from Diego Simeone's men but the Spain international believes the match serves as a momentum booster rather than a clear indicator as to who will be crowned champions come May.

“It's not a game that will decide the league, but will give the winner confidence to win,” Fabregas told Sports Four.

The Catalans will be buoyed by the inclusion of Lionel Messi, who returned to action on Wednesday with two late goals as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 Copa del Rey win over Getafe.

However, Fabregas does not believe that the Argentine's impressive return makes Barcelona clear favourites, as he is extremely wary of the threat posed by Atletico – and, in particular, the talents of star striker Diego Costa.

“Atletico play together, pressing the attack," the former Arsenal skipper mused. "And Diego Costa is on a great run and scoring lots of goals.”

Both Atletico and Barcelona have dropped just five points so far and whoever wins will take their tally to a record-breaking 52 points at the halfway stage of the season.

    Toronto welcome 'global superstar' Defoe

    357698_heroa.jpg

Jermain Defoe has been hailed as a "global superstar" upon his arrival at Toronto FC.

The Tottenham striker has agreed to join the Canadian side ahead of the start of the MLS season in March for a division record £6 million (€7.2m) fee.

The England international's arrival represents a major coup for TFC as they reshape their squad under the stewardship of head coach Ryan Nelsen, who played with the striker during his short stint as a Spurs player.

"We are thrilled, for our club and for our fans, with the opportunity to bring a global football superstar like Jermain Defoe to Toronto FC," said Tim Leiweke, president and chief executive of the franchise's holding company, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

"We promised our fans in October that building a winning club was our top priority and we scoured the globe to find the right players to fulfil that promise.

"Right from the beginning of this process, Jermain Defoe was the top player on our list and we got our man.

"We would like to thank Tottenham as well as MLSE ownership for this very clear demonstration of our commitment to winning.

"Most importantly, we want to thank Toronto FC fans for their patience and support getting to this day."

Toronto general manager Tim Bezbatchenko added: "Jermain brings the complete package to Toronto FC.

"He is an accomplished scorer and I know that his skill and infectious personality will make him a popular star both in Toronto and around the League."

Michael Bradley will join Defoe at the BMO field after leaving Roma.

    Sherwood rules out Lamela exit

    353149_heroa.jpg

Tim Sherwood insists Erik Lamela will not be leaving Tottenham on loan during the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old, who arrived at White Hart Lane in a £30 million (€36m) deal from Roma in August, has struggled to secure a regular first-team place this season and has started just three games in the Premier League.

Inter have been linked with a temporary deal for the Argentina international but, as Goal exclusively revealed on Thursday, Tottenham are adamant that the winger will not be permitted to leave the club this month.

"He won't be leaving on loan in this transfer window. He has a big future here, absolutely," Sherwood said.

"We know what a talented player Erik is. We also understand that players need time to settle.

"He needs time to acclimatise to this country. He doesn't speak English and he isn't used to the pace of the games, especially over the Christmas period when they come thick and fast.

"He is not 100 per cent fit, either. He's still feeling fatigued in one of his thighs so we were very cautious with him.

"We are going to take it nice and steady with him. I really want to put him on the stage when he's ready to perform, rather than let people judge him when he's half-cocked."

Neymar's Barcelona contract may be 'fake', judge claims

    350953_heroa.jpg

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell could find himself in court after a criminal case investigating the signing of Neymar from Santos in the summer revealed the Brazilian's contract may be fake.

The Blaugrana were forced to hand over a dossier detailing the financial elements of the attacker's €57.1 million move, after club socio Jordi Cases made an official complaint last year.

Rosell had hoped the complaint would be thrown out, but the investigation has flagged up irregularities in the deal and the Attorney General of the National High Court has requested further contractual documents as the case continues.

Presecutor Jose Perals has asked for all the relevant documentation in the transfer and could call upon Barca auditors to provide evidence in the investigation, which is looking to establish the whereabouts of the €40 million not received by Santos (with the Brazilian side receiving €17.1m in their share of the deal).

"The contracts that have been signed between the parties do not, at times, correspond to that which is specified within them," the prosecutor's report revealed on Friday, adding that "the contracts signed may have been faked to alter the concept of the payments."

Barca maintain they have done nothing wrong in the transfer, although the Catalan club have been unable to specify exactly who received what.

Meanwhile, one of the third-party owners, supermarket group DIS, claim they received only a small percentage of what they were owed as their part of the deal.

Illarramendi backs Ronaldo for Ballon d'Or

    357756_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo should be crowned the king of football at Monday's Fifa Ballon d'Or awards, according to Real Madrid colleague Asier Illarramendi.

The 28-year-old Portuguese is coming off the back of an incredible year, having scoring a total of 69 goals for Los Blancos across 2013, and is odds on to claim the prestigious prize.

“He’s done more than enough to merit the trophy.” Illarramendi told his club's official website. “He’s the favourite to win for me and for all of Real Madrid.”

In spite of Ronaldo's individual triumphs, Madrid failed to win a trophy last year and currently sit third in La Liga, five points behind Barcelona and Atletico.

However, with Carlo Ancelotti's side facing Espanyol in Catalunya this weekend, Illarramendi is well are that they have an opportunity to propel themselves right back into the title race given the top two will square up at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday night.

“It will be a tough away game but we can’t lose more ground," the former Real Sociedad starlet stated.

"One of Barca and Atletico is probably going to lose, so the important thing is that we win."

Pellegrini still wary of Manchester United title challenge

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has refused to rule Manchester United out of the Premier League title race.

The Red Devils are currently in seventh place, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal and 10 behind their cross-town rivals.

However, Pellegrini concedes that while he is keeping more of an eye on high-flying Arsenal and Chelsea, it would be foolish to rule out a late charge from David Moyes' men.

"Of course, the major rivals at this moment are the teams that are very near our team," he told reporters.

"Arsenal, who are on top, one point ahead of us, and Chelsea, who are one point behind.

"But I'm absolutely sure that Manchester United will continue fighting until the end because they are used to it.

"Also, I think that Liverpool and Everton will continue fighting until the end - they've both played very well.

"At the moment, all of those teams can fight for the title."

City have netted 57 goals in 20 Premier League games so far this season, 10 more than the current bottom three teams combined, but Pellegrini is wary of talking about his side's title chances.

"We are in a very good moment, but we are just in the middle of the season," he continued. "It is very important now to finish the season [well].

"It will be a very close fight to the end of the year with four or five clubs."

The Chilean also took the time to praise Yaya Toure, who was named African Footballer of the Year for the third consecutive time on Thursday.

"It's not easy to win it three times in a continent that has so many players playing everywhere," he added.

"I think it's very important for him, very important for the team and very important for the club.

"We are very happy for him."

Pellegrini was named Barclays Premier League Manager of the Month for December earlier on Friday.
