World Cup already on Messi's mind

    358276_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi has revealed that he and many of his Barcelona team-mates already have the 2014 World Cup on their minds.

The reigning Spanish champions are currently competing on all fronts, both domestically and in the Champions League, but their Argentine superstar freely admits that the Blaugrana's Brazil-bound international contingent are already thinking about their summer assignments.

“We [Barcelona] are taking things one step at a time but, to tell the truth, the World Cup’s on all of our minds already,” Messi told Fifa.com.

“But we’ve got lots of important challenges before that: the Champions League; trying to retain the Liga title; the Copa del Rey ...”

Messi will embark upon his third World Cup campaign with Argentina this summer, having been part of the squads that made quarter-final exits to Germany in both 2006 and 2010.

The 26-year-old attacker added: "World Cup games are totally different. Right from the off, the atmosphere and the build-up make it different to any other competition.

“While the Champions League is great, the World Cup is special.”

Argentina have been drawn alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nigeria and Iran in Group F of this summer's tournament and the 2013 Ballon d’Or runner-up shrugged off talk of a straightforward path into the knockout stages.

Messi continued: “There’s been a lot of talk about how easy it’s going to be, that Argentina are bound to go through comfortably, but it’s a World Cup and there are no easy teams.

“If they’re there it’s because they deserve to be – there are no straightforward matches at a World Cup.”

Messi only recently returned from injury for Barcelona but insisted he was ready for the busy period ahead after dedicating himself to making a full recovering in his home country.

“In physical and mental terms I’m in good shape for these coming six months," he explained.

"I think the time in Argentina went well, though I can’t say I had much contact with people, as I was more focused on my recovery.”

Gaitan: I intend to stay at Benfica

    361079_heroa.jpg

Nicolas Gaitan has insisted that he will respect his contract with Benfica amid reports linking him with a move to Manchester United.

The 25-year-old has long been linked with a transfer to a bigger league, with the Red Devils supposedly among his biggest admirers.

However, Gaitan has stressed that he's focused on Benfica and is not thinking about trading in last season's Europa League finalists for another club.

"I am at Benfica now. I have a contract until 2016 and I want to respect that," the Argentine told reporters.

"If an offer comes in like the one that Benfica received for Nemanja Matic, we'll see what happens.

"But for now, I am just thinking about playing football and the rest does not depend on me."

Gaitan joined Benfica from Boca Juniors in the summer of 2010 and has since developed into a key player at the Lisbon giants.

He guided Benfica to Taca de Liga glory in 2011 and 2012.

Cabaye: I am happy at Newcastle

    360368_heroa.jpg

Yohan Cabaye insists he is happy to remain at Newcastle United amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Laurent Blanc has publicly praised the midfielder on several occasions and has refused to rule out a move for the 28-year-old in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has already stated Arsenal will not submit a fresh bid for Cabaye this month, despite attempting to sign the player during the summer.

"My mentality hasn't changed, even after what happened in the summer. I will do my best for the team every day," Cabaye told reporters.

"If the manager or the staff are happy with my performances, and the fans who are supporting me are happy, I am happy."

PSG, who are now leading the chase for Cabaye, have also been linked with Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic and Juventus star Paul Pogba in recent weeks.

Atletico ruined chance to go top - Filipe Luis

    361056_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis believes his players ruined their chance to go top of La Liga after failing to beat Sevilla on Sunday.

Barcelona's draw at Levante earlier on Sunday meant the Rojiblancos would have moved to the summit with a win against Sevilla, but they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Vicente Calderon. David Villa put Simeone's team ahead early in the game, but the visitors levelled with 17 minutes to play as Ivan Rakitic converted from the penalty spot.

Sevilla performed well throughout the contest and Filipe Luis knows this is something Atletico must get used to now they are considered genuine title challengers."We had a good chance to go top, but there is still a long way to go," the Brazilian told reporters.

"We are now a target and it is very difficult to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona."The merit of what we have done can be seen in our opponents. Look at Sevilla, their bench celebrated the draw as if it was a final."

Atletico remain behind Barca on goal difference in La Liga, but Real Madrid are now only a point behind after their 5-0 win over Betis on Saturday.

:baffled:Ronaldo did not win anything & does not deserve Ballon d'Or, says Ribery

    358758_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery has slammed the outcome of the 2013 Fifa Ballon d'Or and feels Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo did not deserve to win the award as the Portugal international did not collect any trophies last year.

Ribery initially reacted calmly after last week's Fifa gala in Zurich as he had to settle for third spot in the election behind Ronaldo and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, stating that the prestigious individual award was not one of his goals.

However, the Frenchman has now voiced his frustration after all as he believes he should have won the award following his successful 2013 with the Bavarians.

"I won everything I could win with Bayern and individually. Ronaldo on the other hand did not win anything," Ribery told AZ.

"I am not sad that I missed out, but it does hurt a bit. I deserved to win the Ballon d'Or.

"It was clear that Ronaldo would win it. The voting deadline was extended by two weeks. This had never happened before. It wasn't about football. It was a political decision."

Ribery then went on to criticise the FifPro World XI as just three Bayern players made the cut against four Barcelona players.

"There are only three Bayern players in there. That's madness. [Thomas] Muller deserves to be there, and so do [David] Alaba, [Bastian] Schweinsteiger and [Arjen] Robben. We won five titles and made history.

"And then there's the absence of Borussia Dortmund players... Where are [Mario] Gotze and [Robert] Lewandowski? This is impossible."

Incidentally, Gotze left Signal Iduna Park for the Allianz Arena last summer while Lewandowski will join Pep Guardiola's side at the end of the current season.

:(Vidic: Title race is over for Man Utd

    360909_heroa.jpg

Nemanja Vidic concedes Manchester United are now out of the title race following Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.

The loss at Stamford Bridge was the club’s seventh in the Premier League this season, leaving the champions 14 points behind leaders Arsenal in the table.

"Yes, I think so now we are too far behind," Vidic, 32, told Sky Sports. "We have to focus now to get in the top three, top four. We have to be positive."

Vidic, who was sent off in the second half against Chelsea, admits securing a top-four place is a difficult challenge this term but has urged his team-mates to find cohesion.

"It's not going to be easy but we have to now fight for different things," the Serbian continued.

"We have to focus on the [Capital One] Cup and the Champions League.

"It's never easy but we have to stay positive, we have to stick together, we have to work hard to change the things around.

"Hopefully we can play better football and with a bit of luck I think we can achieve that."

Vidic also claims the United players are "tired" of questions regarding David Moyes and refused to blame the Scot for the club's form this season.

"Let’s focus on other games that are coming. We cannot always speak about managers, you just keep coming back to these kind of questions," said the 32-year-old.

"I have to say the players are tired to speak about that any more, I think the manager’s trying to do the best he can."

Fabregas: I was not angry with substitution

    330263_heroa.jpg

Cesc Fabregas has insisted he was not angry with Gerardo Martino after the Barcelona coach replaced him with Sergi Roberto in the 73rd minute of the Blaugrana's 1-1 La Liga draw against Levante on Sunday evening.

The Spain international cut a frustrated figure in the dugout but has stressed that Barcelona's inability to score a second goal annoyed him rather than Martino's decision.

"My reaction after I was substituted? I was frustrated with the game, not that I was taken off," Fabregas told reporters after his side's draw.

"I felt good and we were creating chances. It was the frustration you get when the ball just doesn’t want to go in.

"I have the sense that we could have played better in the first half, but in the second we dominated. We controlled the game, we were a bit unlucky."

Fabregas has been in sublime form for Barcelona this season, netting seven goals in 19 La Liga appearances.

'Everything is fine with Falcao' - Ranieri

    360993_heroa.jpg

Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri says "everything is fine" with Radamel Falcao following the club's return to winning ways in Ligue 1 with a 2-0 victory at Toulouse on Sunday.

The principality club avoided three straight games without a win in Ligue 1 as goals from Layvin Kurzawa and Lucas Ocampos secured all three points, though the Colombian striker was absent from the scoresheet once again.

Despite having not scored in his last four Ligue 1 games - his last goal in the top flight was way back on November 8 - Ranieri backed Falcao to rediscover his form and praised his squad as a whole for improving after a shaky start at the weekend.

"We were struggling during the first 30 minutes - Toulouse had two or three chances to score," Ranieri told reporters. "We improved after these phases of the game and played better."It was very important for us to secure three points.

"Everything is fine with Falcao - I spoke to him after the game. We have three games this week and he will play in all of them."He will continue to play and will get his rhythm back again - he still needs time to find that."

Monaco are second in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain, who maintained their five-point gap at the top of the table with a 5-0 thrashing of Nantes.

Van Gaal: I rejected Tottenham offer

    353486_heroa.jpg

Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal has confirmed he was approached by Tottenham following Andre Villas-Boas' sacking.

The 62-year-old, along with Guus Hiddink and Fabio Capello, was contacted initially by Spurs before Tim Sherwood was handed the reins on a full-time basis.

"Everybody knows it so I can admit it," Van Gaal told Sky Sports News. "I don't do things in a double function [holding two jobs at the same time].

"You have to give an example to your players that they have to focus on the national team and that is my ambition also.

"I have refused [the Tottenham job] but maybe there will come another chance. That is the difficulty with coaching. When you are free, then maybe there are no vacancies."

Van Gaal, though, admits working in the Premier League interests him but not until after the World Cup.

"When you are working, then there are vacancies. It is always difficult. After the World Cup I shall retire or, if there is a Premier League club, I shall think about it," he said.

"I want to work in the Premier League because that is the league I have not worked in yet.

"I want to coach here in the Premier League because I think Spain, Germany and England are the strongest competitions. That is an ambition and who knows."

:(No United bid for Chelsea's Juan Mata

    mata_3027071.jpg

Manchester United have not yet put in an offer for Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata. The Premier League champions are reportedly willing to pay 37 million pounds for the Spain international but a source at Old Trafford told ESPN that no bid has been submitted.ESPN reported earlier this month that United were monitoring Mata, who has lost his place in the Chelsea side this season, but that the Londoners would not want to let him join another English club.

However United manager David Moyes is believed to be planning to test Chelsea’s resolve to keep the 25-year-old and is prepared to smash the club's transfer record -- currently the 30.75 million pounds Sir Alex Ferguson spent on Dimitar Berbatov in 2009.Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said at the start of January that it “hurt” him to omit Mata and that he did not want to sell the former Valencia player.

Mata, who joined Chelsea in 2011, won the club’s Player of the Year award in each of his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge but Mourinho has preferred to pick Oscar, Willian and Eden Hazard as the three attacking midfielders in his side.United’s relationship with Chelsea has been complicated by Mourinho’s summer attempts to buy Wayne Rooney, which Moyes and vice-chairman Ed Woodward rebuffed.

The United boss has only made one major signing so far -- Marouane Fellaini from his former club Everton – and he has scouted extensively across Europe in his search for reinforcements.Moyes and his coaching staff have watched players including Koke, Sami Khedira, Arturo Vidal, Paul Pogba and Marco Reus and it is thought he is keenest to strengthen in the centre of midfield.

That would appear to rule out Mata, with former United captain Gary Neville expressing surprise at the suggestion Moyes was targeting the Spain international.Neville told Sky Sports: "That's a lot of money, 37 million pounds, but they need a signing. Does he fit with what I would call the typical philosophy of Manchester United? I would say no.

"The first question, I think, is where are you going to play? Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are up top if they are fit so where are you going to play him? Are you going to play him off the left or off the right?”

Manchester United closer to Juan Mata transfer

    Juan-Mata-Chelsea-August-2013_2997353.jpg

Manchester United are hopeful of securing a deal for Chelsea's Juan Mata by this weekend, sources at both Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge have told ESPN.

United officials have remained in London over the last two days to conduct negotiations for Mata and one other "European-based central midfielder" -- believed to be Juventus' Arturo Vidal.

While the second deal is still some way off, and may even be for the summer, sources have stated that there has been considerable movement in Mata negotiations and, for the first time, Chelsea are considering a sale to a domestic rival.

While any such move would involve United breaking their transfer record -- with figures of around 40 million pounds being mooted -- the Old Trafford hierarchy is said to have been jolted into the action by the urgency of the club's situation after Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.

Previously, Old Trafford insiders had been hugely concerned that officials were too rigid in sticking to a policy of refusing to "pay over the odds" in terms of fees and wages, even though that was all that was required in the case of many of the players United have pursued since June.

Any deal for Mata would involve a marked departure from that, and it is understood they are finally prepared to do so. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, however, will have the final say over whether the Spanish playmaker leaves -- amid suggestions the club would still prefer to sell Mata abroad.

Meanwhile, United feel a significant wage increase can entice Vidal to the club -- either now or in the summer. Although the Chilean midfielder is hugely happy at Juventus, and turned down Bayern Munich for the Italian champions, initial negotiations were encouraging for United.

The fact that Vidal is also on relatively low wages for a player at a big European club, and that Juve are maintaining a comparatively prudent approach to transfers, means United feel they have some leverage. The English champions are also keeping tabs on Vidal's teammate Claudio Marchisio, and have renewed interest in Roma's Miralem Pjanic, Atletico Madrid's Koke as well as Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye.

The range of targets reflect what has been a frustrating period in the market for Moyes, with United said to have scouted up to 40 players over the past few months.
