Bayern turned down Chelsea offer for Ribery, reveals Rummenigge

    332033_heroa.jpg

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that Bayern Munich turned down a big-money offer from Chelsea for Franck Ribery in 2008.

The France international was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid at the time, but Rummenigge has made it clear that the Spanish giants were not the only team after Ribery's signature.

"Ribery is a hero with the fans and it's a good thing that we didn't give in when Real Madrid and a few more teams showed an interest in signing him in 2008," the Bayern chairman was quoted as saying by TZ.

"We solved everything like gentlemen with Madrid, although I must stress that there was no official offer. They made an enquiry and we closed the door on a move right away.

"We could have made a lot of money, because we also had an official offer from Chelsea that was utter madness. It was the right thing not to sell him, though.

"That showed all clubs that Bayern are a buying club rather than a selling club. That's the way it works with the big teams. You don't stand a chance if a team like Barcelona or Madrid don't want to sell and the same thing goes for Bayern these days."

Ribery, 30, signed a new contract with Bayern until the summer of 2017 last year and has stated more than once that he intends to retire at the Bundesliga champions.

Isco still has a future at Real Madrid, insists Ancelotti

    359674_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that Real Madrid's change to a 4-3-3 formation hurts Isco's chances of getting regular first-team action, but has insisted that the 21-year-old still has a future at the Santiago Bernabeu side.

The attacking midfielder impressed with a string of fine performances in the opening stages of the 2013-14 campaign, but has been struggling to replicate that form since Madrid moved away from their 4-2-3-1 set-up.

Nevertheless, Ancelotti has stressed that there is still room for Isco as he can also feature in a three-man midfield or on the right wing.

"The 4-3-3 system gives us more balance because the defensive job done by the three midfielders is very good and we will keep using this system," Ancelotti said at a press conference.

"It is true that this change makes it more difficult for Isco, but I think he can play in [Angel] Di María’s or [Luka] Modric’s position as well.

"Plus I have not completely forgotten about the old system and we may still use it from time to time."

Isco, who joined Madrid from Malaga at the start of the season, has scored six goals in 16 appearances for los Blancos in La Liga.

Jovetic still important to Manchester City - Pellegrini

    313121_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini is confident Stevan Jovetic can still become an important player for Manchester City despite his injury woes.

The Montenegrin has only featured five times, scoring twice, for City since moving to the Etihad Stadium from Fiorentina for €27 million in the summer.

Goal exclusively revealed in December that City had rejected approaches from Juventus, AC Milan and Inter for the attacker, who is settled in Manchester.

And Pellegrini believes, given time, Jovetic can recapture the Fiorentina and Montenegro form that attracted City's attentions in the first place.

"He came here with the illusion of playing in the Premier League," Pellegrini told the Manchester Evening News. "He was a very important player in Italy for Fiorentina and I still believe he will be a very important player for us.

"He can really start playing often in the next three months and I think he can be the player we hoped he would be.

"It’s very difficult to be happy when you’re not playing and you have so many injuries but he’s conscious that he will be 100 per cent fit and demonstrate why he’s here."

Jovetic is in the squad to face West Ham in the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final on Tuesday after recovering from hamstring and calf injuries, but Pellegrini is not sure how much of a part he will play.

"We’ll see what happens with Stevan in the next few days," he continued. "It’s an important chance for him to come back to play but I don’t think he’ll be able to play from the beginning or play 90 minutes."

Inter call off Guarin-Vucinic swap deal

    361352_heroa.jpg

Inter have revealed that a swap deal between Fredy Guarin and Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic has been called off.

The Nerazzurri had seemingly agreed to bring Vucinic from Turin to San Siro on Monday, but fans reacted with outrage at the possibility of Colombian midfielder Guarin going in the other direction and the Milan-based club have done a U-turn.

"Internazionale decided not to continue negotiations with Juventus regarding the transfer of Fredy Guarin and Mirko Vucinic," the club announced on their official website.

"Club president Erick Thohir, having conferred with [honourary president] Massimo Moratti and the club's coaching team, did not feel that the necessary technical and financial conditions were in place to come to a satisfactory agreement.

"The president has already instructed the club's sporting directors to assess other transfer opportunities, with the aim of strengthening the team while respecting the parameters imposed by the Financial Fair Play rules."

The Serie A leaders seem baffled by Inter's decision to bail on talks over a swap deal but said they would refrain from commenting on the details of what happened until after their Coppa Italia clash with Roma on Tuesday.

"Juventus won't comment on Inter's press release," their website read not long after the Nerazzurri had called the deal off. "The club are focused on the cup game against Roma and then we'll explain this perplexing case."

Inter's withdrawal from the swap deal means that the Bianconeri must go back to the drawing board about farming out Vucinic in the winter transfer window.

Arsenal had been looking at loaning the Montenegro forward, but the Scudetto holders are believed to be keen on making his departure permanent.

Meanwhile, Guarin remains in Inter limbo as the Serie A giants ponder cashing in on the in-demand playmaker but unable to find a deal which works.

Casillas should leave Madrid, says Cazorla

    356301_heroa.jpg

Iker Casillas should leave Real Madrid in search of first-team football, according to Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla.

Mesut Ozil jumped ship from the Santiago Bernabeu for the Emirates Stadium at the start of the season and Cazorla, who left La Liga for England in 2012, thinks Diego Lopez's deputy at the Blancos should follow suit.

"Casillas should try playing somewhere else," the ex-Villarreal and Malaga star said of his Spain team-mate to beIn Sport.

"I learn from Ozil every day; having him with us at Arsenal is a great opportunity."

The 29-year-old also mused that Chelsea winger Juan Mata, another Spaniard who is struggling to get regular game-time, will depart Stamford Bridge in 2014 at this rate.

"If Mata doesn't play he will want to leave Chelsea, that's obvious," Cazorla added.

Cazorla scored both of the Gunners' goals as they defeated relegation-threatened Fulham 2-0 on Saturday to ensure they stay top of the Premier League with 22 games gone.

Don't ditch Dortmund for Man Utd or Real Madrid, Weidenfeller warns Gundogan

    359875_heroa.jpg

Roman Weidenfeller believes it would be detrimental for Borussia Dortmund team-mate Ilkay Gundogan to join Manchester United or Real Madrid.

The midfielder, 23, is a key cog in the Schwarzgelben first team and has been heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils or the Blancos.

However, BVB and Germany goalkeeper Weidenfeller thinks Gundogan's development as a player would suffer if he were to leave Signal Iduna Park in 2014.

"I would advise Gundogan to stay," he told Kicker. "His development is not yet over. There are a lot of challenges he can help us with at Dortmund."

With the Bundesliga winter break coming to an end, Weidenfeller is concentrated on his team's first game of the calendar year on Saturday and asssting his side's attempts to improve upon their current fourth place.

"We are fully prepared going into the game against Augsburg," added the 33-year-old. "It is crucial that we finish in a Champions League place and now we want to start catching up."Jurgen Klopp's men trail leaders Bayern Munich by 12 points, second-placed Bayer Leverkusen by five points and Borussia Monchengladbach in third by a solitary point.

    Sunderland sign Oscar Ustari

    361457_heroa.jpg

Sunderland have completed a move for Argentine goalkeeper Oscar Ustari until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old arrives from Almeria on a free transfer after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with the Spanish club earlier on Tuesday.

Ustari is Gus Poyet's third signing of the January transfer window after completing deals for Marcos Alonso and Santiago Vergini.

“Although I’ve not had many games, I’ve been very happy here these last six months,” Ustari told UDA Radio.

“Almeria is a marvellous city to live in and I won’t forget it. I’ll leave behind a lot of friends at the club.”

“I want to thank Almeria for everything they’ve offered me, the club, my team-mates, the coaching staff, the fans, everyone. I hope and I’m confident that the team will achieve permanence in La Liga, with plenty of games to spare.”

    Conte: Juventus were too shy

    361164_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Antonio Conte says his side's "shy" start to the eventual 1-0 Coppa Italia defeat to Roma was to blame for the loss.

A late Gervinho effort saw Rudi Garcia's side into the semi-finals of the competition at the expense of the Serie A champions.

The former Siena boss feels his troops would also have been worthy winners on the night, but accepted that they came up against good opponents in the form of the Giallorossi.

"It was a balances game, and Roma's goal came when we were playing better. In the first half, we were perhaps a little too shy, but I do think we can say that we suffered.

"We're two strong teams, this time it went in their favour and they won. The guys are not to blame. We have used the Coppa Italia to rotate.

"There's the Scudetto and the Europa League. It was not easy to come here and deal with this Roma. We could have won but in the end they won."

Mehdi Benatia was booked for dragging down Sebastian Giovinco in the first period and Conte went on to say that the Moroccan could have been sent off for the offence.

"I think he was the last man. I don't understand it. However, I'm not going to replace the referee. He decided it that way and we accept it."

Thohir: Guarin-Vucinic swap made no sense

    361251_heroa.jpg

Inter president Erick Thohir says he pulled the plug on the swap deal involving Fredy Guarin and Juventus' Mirko Vucinic because the deal did not make sense on a financial or sporting level.

The two Italian clubs were locked in negotiations throughout Monday and Tuesday over the transfer, but it ultimately collapsed after the pair failed to reach an agreement.

And the Indonesian businessman has revealed that he consulted senior club figures before deciding to cancel talks once and for all amid protests from Nerazzurri fans.

"After speaking to my closest aides and exchanging views with Massimo Moratti and his son Angelomario this morning, I decided not to continue negotiations with Juventus," a Thohir statement read.

"I felt it was not possible to reach an agreement on a deal in which the opinions of the two parties differed and which did not offer a clear financial or technical benefit to the club.

"As was said in the recent club statement, I have already asked our sporting directors to evaluate other transfer opportunities that will enable us to strengthen the team in line with the financial parameters imposed by Financial Fair Play.

"Again, I believe we must all remain united, the fans, the club and the team so that we can get back to the standing we all want for this club and that Inter deserve."

Milan relying on Coppa Italia for Europe, admits Tassotti

    361438_heroa.jpg

AC Milan are relying on Coppa Italia success to provide them with European football in 2014-15, according to assistant coach Mauro Tassotti.

The San Siro club have been in dismal form in Serie A this season - they sit 11th with 25 points from 20 games - and recently appointed Clarence Seedorf in ousted coach Massimiliano Allegri's stead.

With finishing in the upper echelons of the league looking unlikely, Tassotti believes the Rossoneri must overcome Udinese in Wednesday's quarter-final and go on a cup run to get continental football next season.

"The Coppa Italia seems the best route to qualify for Europe next season," he told reporters. "We'll play with a side to win. Every player that takes to the pitch will have to have keep this in mind."Knockout matches are always dangerous. We're favourites because of home advantage and Udinese will play with less pressure on them.

"Even though they're struggling, they're a good side, they've got good players and against us in the Coppa Italia they've got a good record. We want to progress."

On the subject of new head coach Seedorf, Tassotti declared that the Dutchman had settled into the role quickly and thinks he has been mentally preparing for this Milan role for years."I'm getting on well with Clarence," he continued. "There was a moment of confusion after the dismissal of Allegri, but that's normal.

"I worked for three and a half years with other staff members and I'm committed to the club."I've known Clarence for years. He's very attentive to every minor detail, he’s aware of everything, he's completely thrown himself into the job.

"I think he was preparing for this job for a while and it's clear that he was working towards this."

Inter not been good enough, says Thohir

    361251_heroa.jpg

Inter president Erick Thohir has demanded the team work harder to improve on disappointing and frustrating performances in 2014.

The Nerazzurri have not been crowned Serie A champions since 2010, having drifted from the high level of success of the previous decade which made them one of Italy’s most formidable clubs.

They have looked improved under Walter Mazzarri's stewardship, but a string of poor results and performances have made fans question the side and Thohir sympathises, promising more effort can turn around results.

"As the new president of Inter, I understand and feel the disappointment and frustration of our fans around the world," he told the club’s official website."No one is satisfied with our recent performances - but I am a blue-collar president who will always resolve issues by rolling up his sleeves and getting directly involved.

"This is a challenging time for Inter. However, there is no blame within our walls. We must work harder and come together as a team."I am confident in our process, and look forward to building the future for Inter together."

Inter currently sit fifth in the Serie A and are 23 points behind league leaders Juventus.

:cool:Rooney set for Manchester United return against Sunderland

    352476_heroa.jpg

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is back in full training and is expected to be included in the squad to face Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Rooney had been struggling with a groin injury since the end of December, and aggravated the problem after playing against Tottenham on New Year's Day.

Manager David Moyes had sent Rooney to Egypt for some warm-weather recuperation work with a United fitness coach with a view to getting him fit for Sunday's clash against Chelsea.

And although the club were hopeful he would be back to face the Blues upon his return, Rooney had been easing his way back into training and was not ready for the trip to Stamford Bridge, where Samuel Eto'o's hat-trick helped deliver a 3-1 victory for Jose Mourinho's side.

But the striker was involved in full contact training on Monday - including ball work and tackling - and although he is not thought to be ready for 90 minutes, he is expected to play some part against the Black Cats, who lead 2-1 from the first leg.

"Wayne is really keen to get back into the side and is going full throttle in training," a Carrington source told Goal.

"The medical guys have given him the all clear to play, so it should hopefully just be a case of getting his fitness up to scratch."

Rooney's contract expires at the end of next season and Goal understands that he has repeatedly rejected United's attempts to enter negotiations over a new deal.

    :)Man Utd interested in Dante

    337044_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich defender Dante, though the player's agent has warned any deal to take the player to the Premier League is far from close.

The Red Devils are long-term admirers of the Brazil international, having previously shown interest before he completed a move to the Allianz Arena from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012, and continue to monitor his progress with the European champions.

Goal understands that Bayern are receptive to offers for the 30-year-old, having so far been unable to reach agreement on an extension to the defender's current contract which expires at the end of next season.

After being asked by Fox Sport Brasil if he had already signed for United, Dante said: "Not yet. I am still a Bayern player. I appreciate Manchester United's interest. At the end of the month it will be resolved."

"We'll have to wait until the 31st, but there's still a lot to come."

But while Dante suggests a move to Old Trafford is close, his agent was keen to stress that at the moment he has not held talks with any club but Bayern, although he did admit that English football interests his client.

"He has two more years on his contract and we are now in the race to make a new contract, but at the moment we have not found a solution so we are still waiting for Bayern," Marcus Marin told Goal. "We are not in touch with any other clubs at the moment but in football you never know.

When asked specifically about Dante's quotes on Brazilian television and Manchester United's supposed interest, Marin replied: "No, I know that they follow him and we were in touch with Manchester [United] two years ago before [Dante] went to Bayern Munich, but at the moment I know only that they watch him at games, but we haven’t spoken to the club at the moment.

"We have not found a solution [with Bayern], so we are still in the race, but England is very interesting, Manchester United are a big club so you never know.
"Next month [Bayern] play in the next round of the Champions League against Arsenal and it is a good way to present himself in England. In the last game [in England] he played very well so yeah, we will see."

Dante was part of the Bayern Munich team that won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup in 2013, as well as the Brazil side that claimed the Confederations Cup last summer.

United's search for reinforcements has taken manager David Moyes across Europe, with the Scot present at Cagliari versus Juventus earlier this month to run the rule over home defender Davide Astori - as well as Juve midfielder Claudio Marchisio.

The Premier League champions have also held talks with Benfica regarding Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay.

Veteran defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic look set to leave Old Trafford this summer having not been offered extensions to their current deals, which expire at the end of the season.
