:baffled::baffled:Moyes stunned by Manchester United no-show

    379414_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes was at a loss to explain Sunday's 3-0 defeat Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old watched on as Steven Gerrard scored twice from the penalty spot before Nemanja Vidic was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Daniel Sturridge inside the penalty area.

Gerrard missed the ensuing spot kick before Luis Suarez made it three and ensured Liverpool of their first win at Old Trafford in seven attempts.

United were subdued throughout as they slipped to a sixth home defeat in all competitions this season.

And after suffering a further blow in his debut season with the champions, Moyes was surprised by his side's below-par showing.

"It wasn't what we expected, I felt as if the players looked in good shape and good fettle going into it but we just didn't get to the standards that were required to beat Liverpool," he said.

"I said all week, I've not seen that. I've seen confident players, well-motivated and hard-working [players].

"We didn't start the game as well as we'd like but I actually thought we grew into the game a bit better but the [second] penalty kick changed that.

"Liverpool played well and we didn't play as well as we can. We'll work to make that better."

The defeat leaves United 12 points off fourth place with just nine games to rescue their league campaign.

:(Man Utd job harder than I thought, says Moyes

    379289_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted that the United job is harder than he expected.

Steven Gerrard scored twice from the spot as Liverpool beat Man United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday - and Moyes revealed after the game that he is finding his job difficult.

"I think the job was always going to be hard. Harder? Yeah, I would say so." he told reporters.

United saw Nemanja Vidic sent off for the foul that led to Liverpool's third penalty, which Gerrard missed, and 50-year-old Moyes questioned some of referee Mark Clattenburg's decisions.

"It was a game littered with penalty kicks and decisions - some were right and some were wrong," Moyes told Sky Sports.

"To give away one penalty 20 seconds into the second half made it an upward climb.

"They played better than us. Some decisions went for them and on some occasions they earned it but on others they didn't.

"I think that's just the way things are; it's best we don't talk about it."

Moyes was particularly aggrieved by United being denied a penalty when Glen Johnson appeared to handle in the area.

The United boss continued: "I thought it hits his hand, it's not a lot different from (the penalty given against) Rafael.

"I think Liverpool played well but in the first half there wasn't a great deal in it."

Despite suffering another setback in a disappointing first season in charge at Old Trafford, Moyes has refused to concede defeat in the chase for Champions League qualification."We'll fight to the end, [Champions League qualification] will be tough but we'll see what we can do," he added.

:(:(:(From Fergie time to garbage time: Moyes' United humiliated in Liverpool defeat

    article-2582292-1C58424000000578-788_634x505.jpg

The most damning part of this monumental defeat for Manchester United against Liverpool at Old Trafford? That with 20 minutes to go it looked over.

We had moved into what is termed in American sports as "garbage time" - that period which comes after all the significant action has taken place and teams are playing out the clock. From the hosts there was nothing, not only single flicker of hope to feed the furnace that defiantly continued to burn in the Stretford End.

We know there have been changes at United this season, big changes, but not in a long time have the 11 men on the field looked so forlorn, so miserable, so beaten and so early too.

At the end of damaging losses, managers speak of the need to take the positives. From this risible effort, David Moyes, I dare you to rescue a single one.

It is of course a total disservice to Liverpool that at the end of a 3-0 win at Old Trafford we come out talking about Manchester United. For the Merseysiders played very well. There was vim and vibrancy about the movement and interplay of Luis Suarez and his lieutenants Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling.

Sturridge in particular was going past United players for fun both with the ball and on the run and stitched up Nemanja Vidic in winning the third penalty.

Where Liverpool had sharpness, intuition, United had a lack of speed and a lack of thought. Marouane Fellaini in a dream world would have had a stormer here and shrugged off doubts over his capabilities. Instead he merely confirmed he is not good enough.

Michael Carrick, his midfield partner, shirked responsibility and could only watch hopelessly as the quicksilver Liverpool attackers took it in turns to play in behind him and launch attacks.

When that part of the team is malfunctioning, and malfunction it did with Vidic looking increasingly like a busted flush, there is an added onus on the attacking contingent. With Adnan Januzaj, Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in the lineup there ought to be goals. They are, though, bereft of purpose and belief. The latter three remain barely on nodding terms with each other while Januzaj remains the one constant source of optimism in this sorry excuse of a season.

United were without a game in a week before this one. They had no significant injuries to speak of. This was United as fresh as could be with as much time to prepare a game as is conceivably possible in the modern football calendar. This, then, must be regarded as what David Moyes is capable of extracting from his players. Compare what he must be thinking to Brendan Rodgers' thoughts on the game.

Liverpool came and laid down a championship marker with Steven Gerrard a tower of strength in midfield. It will satisfy the Merseysiders to see a pathetic United disappear in their slipstream but winning at Old Trafford just ain't as hard as it used to be.

Garcia hails 'illuminating' Totti after Roma win

    379890_heroa.jpg

Roma coach Rudi Garcia has hailed the "illuminating" performance of Francesco Totti after his match-winning return against Udinese.

Garcia was able to deploy both Totti and Mattia Destro in the same starting XI for the first time since their 4-0 win over Catania in December, and the attacking pair both made an early impact, with a goal each prior to the half-hour mark in the Italian capital.

"We scored three goals and had the chance to score another two or three," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"We created a lot in attack, so I am happy with the performance of these players. We knew the captain (Totti) couldn't play a full 90 minutes but he was truly illuminating tonight.

"I am above all happy with the way the team played, as remember we were without Daniele De Rossi, Kevin Strootman and Douglas Maicon."

Despite Totti and Destro impressing as a partnership, Garcia was concerned that his second-placed side in Serie A could not win more comfortably with their early lead.

"We did many great things but also given away too many chances. We hadn't suffered like this at home for 15 games," he added.

"They say football is the art of making life difficult for yourself but we got the three points and that was the important thing.

"We could've scored more goals but without a great Morgan De Sanctis performance we could've conceded more too.

"We made mistakes and misplaced some very easy passes. That is the problem, as we must be always concentrated and never leave anything to the opposition.

"They never gave up and usually after going 3-1 up the game is finished. It is a reminder we need to be more concentrated and determined all the way to the final whistle."

FA committee rejects proposed 'Hull Tigers' name change

    379811_heroa.jpg

The FA membership committee have advised against Hull City changing their name to Hull Tigers, putting the proposal in serious doubt.

Hull's owners, the Allam family, formally applied to alter the moniker in December after club chairman Assem Allam branded the City suffix "lousy" and "common".

The move has been met with derision from sections of the club's fans - who set up a campaign group named 'City Till We Die' to rally against the change - though Allam has claimed the switch would help Hull become financially self-sufficient.

Egyptian-born Allam, who made his fortune in marine generators after moving to Hull in the 1960s, has previously said he will happily sell the club if his proposal is rejected.

And that vow looks likely to be tested with the membership committee recommending that the FA council throw out any attempted change when they rule on the matter on April 9 - three days before Hull compete in their first FA Cup semi-final in 84 years against Sheffield United at Wembley.

An FA statement read: "Hull City are able to make a further submission to The FA Council in view of the written reasons, which they have received, before the 9 April meeting.

"A final decision will be made at that meeting."

Hull confirmed last week that they will ballot season ticket holders on their opinions over the name change.

The results could form a basis of the club's attempts to convince the FA council to go against their membership committee's recommendation.

Despite the off-field tension, Steve Bruce's side currently sit five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone with nine games to play this season.

Totti pays tribute to Strootman after match-winning Roma return

    379855_heroa.jpg

Roma captain Francesco Totti dedicated his match-winning return to action on Monday to injured team-mate Kevin Strootman.

The experienced attacker, who has missed the last month with a thigh strain, opened the scoring against Udinese before playing a part in his side's second and third goals as the Giallorossi ran out 3-2 winners.

Totti celebrated by waving Strootman's No.6 jersey to the crowd, with the Netherlands international set to undergo surgery this week on a torn knee ligament.

"Not playing hurt, but the important thing tonight was to win and maintain our pace at the top," Totti told Sky Sport Italia. "We have Napoli snapping at our heels, but we got the crucial victory.

"It's as if he [Strootman] were here. He is a fundamental player and above all a great guy who settled in straight away.

"He's part of this group and I hope he can recover as soon as possible. He'll certainly be back stronger than ever."

Morgan De Sanctis made a number of impressive saves in Monday's narrow win, with one stop in particular drawing some on-field congratulations from Udinese striker Antonio Di Natale.

"De Sanctis performed some great saves tonight. He has so much experience and directs the defence, so he is a goalkeeper who makes the difference," Totti added.

Benitez silent on referee after controversial Higuain goal

    379841_heroa.jpg

Napoli boss Rafael Benitez refused to be drawn into a debate on Gonzalo Higuain's controversial winner against Torino on Monday.

The Argentina international appeared to clip the heels of Kamil Glik before striding clear to score a last-gasp goal to earn his side a 1-0 win, after Torino had spurned a host of opportunities to break the deadlock themselves.

Benitez, however, was interested only in the positive aspects of his side's showing after their defeat to Porto last week.

"I haven't spoken about referees throughout the season, so I am not going to start now," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"I think we created scoring opportunities, just like Torino did, and proved that this team wants to win right to the end.

"Torino sealed up very well and then went on the counterattack. We played against Porto on Thursday, we've been playing two games per week all season, so it's not easy to stay sharp.

The form of Marek Hamsik continues to be in the spotlight at the San Paolo, with the attacking midfielder putting in another lethargic display on Monday, but Benitez insists he will recover his best form should he be given enough freedom on the pitch.

"He did much better today as he helped out the team in attack and defence," insisted the Spaniard. "I never thought of bringing him into a deeper role, as he is so good at the final ball and with those runs forward. I said that I had faith in him and he replied with a good performance.

"I think he needs to have freedom to do what he wants to on the field."

Rooney issues rallying cry to 'brilliant' Manchester United fans for Olympiakos clash

    379484_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney has called on the "brilliant" Manchester United fans to get behind the team when they take on Olympiakos in Wednesday's crucial Champions League clash.

United must overturn a two-goal deficit from the first match in order to reach the quarter-finals but are still reeling from Sunday's 3-0 humiliation by bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Rooney thanked United supporters for sticking by the team in spite of the defeat and called on them to make their voices heard again on Wednesday.

"[Sunday] was one of the worst days I've had in football and was hard to take," he admitted.

"Having said that the fans were brilliant right until the end under difficult circumstances so I would like to thank them for that.

"We need to move on as we have a big game on Wednesday, if the fans can repeat an atmosphere like Sunday then we will have a good chance of going through. Thanks again for all your support."

Defeat to Liverpool has all but ended United's hopes of finishing in the top four, meaning they will have to win the Champions League to ensure their participation next season.
