Valencia 1-0 Ludogorets (Agg: 4-0): Alcacer wraps up routine win

    380932hp2.jpg

Valencia striker Paco Alcacer headed home in the second half to wrap up a routine 1-0 win at home to Ludogrets and secure a comfortable 4-0 victory on aggregate in the Europa League last 16.

The Spanish side gave themselves a massive first-leg advantage last week by winning 3-0 in a smash-and-grab performance with 10 men and finished the job off in the return game thanks to Alcacer's second-half header.

Like their meeting in Sofia, Ludogorets looked threatening on the flanks, but it was Valencia who appeared more likely to break the deadlock in the first half as Dani Parejo saw a free kick come back off the crossbar just before the break.

Alcacer wasted one chance just after half-time, but he made no mistake with his next opportunity as he headed los Che into a 4-0 aggregate lead in the 59th minute.

Ludogorets pressed for a late consolation, but the 2004 Uefa Cup winners held on with relative ease to confirm their place in the last eight.

Valencia coach Juan Antonio Pizzi insisted in the build-up that his side are targeting nothing less than Europa League glory this season, his confidence no doubt boosted by a dominant first leg that almost rendered the return clash an irrelevance.

The visitors enjoyed a lively start, however, and, after winning himself a free kick in a dangerous position, Vura Misidjan saw a curling effort deflected just over the crossbar.

Ludogorets enjoyed a large share of possession as they looked to mount an unlikely comeback, but Valencia went close to increasing their aggregate lead in the 22nd minute as Vladislav Stoyanov saved a Javi Fuego header.

A mistake from Yordan Minev just past the half-hour mark saw Joao Pereira burst into Ludogorets' penalty area, but Cosmin Moti covered to great effect, bailing out his left-back with a well-timed sliding tackle.

The hosts ended the first period with great purpose and were agonisingly denied an opener on the night in stoppage time as Parejo's free kick struck the bar.

Alcacer nearly gave Pizzi's men an ideal start to the second half as he latched on to Pereira's lofted pass, but he inexplicably failed to hit the target after charging into the area.

The 20-year-old made amends just before the hour mark, though. Fede Cartabia fired in a teasing cross from the left and Alcacer met it with a glancing header, sending the ball past the helpless Stoyanov and into the bottom-right corner.

Mihail Aleksandrov almost got his name on the scoresheet a few moments later, but Diego Alves parried his close-range effort away from goal in acrobatic fashion.

The final stages resembled a training match for Valencia as they passed the ball around with little opposition from Ludogorets, and they comfortably progressed into the final eight of the competition.

Pogba: Pirlo has a golden foot

    380968_heroa.jpg

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba hailed the "golden foot" of Andrea Pirlo as the Bianconeri marched past Fiorentina into the Europa League quarter-finals.

Pirlo fired home a free kick from the edge of the area to give Juve a 1-0 win at the Artemio Franchi on Thursday, sealing a 2-1 aggregate victory and progression to the last eight.

Following the Bianconeri's win, French midfielder Paul Pogba was quick to hail the impact the veteran has on the side.

"Pirlo's got a golden foot! I need to train for many years if I'm going to be able to shoot like him," the 21-year-old told Mediaset.

"We're very happy. We still remember the 4-2 defeat here [in Serie A] and it was important for us to overturn that result.

"We said before the match that if we stuck to our usual game plan, the goal would eventually come."

Echoing his team-mate's sentiments, defender Leonardo Bonucci had his own words of praise for the decorated Italy international.

"Pirlo is a champion – he can turn any match around," he said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game. They [Fiorentina] too wanted to keep going in this competition.

"We played with the awareness that we are a great team and the humility allowed us to deal with the pressure.

"Those who step on to the field put themselves at the disposal of the side and sacrifice [themselves] for their team-mates."

Victory keeps alive Antonio Conte's side's hopes of competing in the final, which will be held at their home stadium in Turin on May 14.

'Fiorentina must turn the page' – Montella eager to move past Juventus defeat

    380832_heroa.jpg

Although Fiorentina fell to a 1-0 home loss to Juventus on Thursday that saw the hosts crash out of the Europa League, coach Vincenzo Montella was quick to defend his hard-working side.

La Viola had an away-goal advantage from a 1-1 first-leg result in Turin, but a trademark Andrea Pirlo free kick sealed progression for the Bianconeri in the return fixture.

Despite going out, the 39-year-old boss spoke highly of his charges for their efforts during the tie.

"I have to congratulate my team," Montella told Mediaset. "They did their best and we came close to victory – especially in the first half when we had three chances to score.

"We've lost players [due to injury], but the sacrifices the team has made has seen us overcome those difficulties by taking responsibility.

"Tomorrow, we must turn to a new page. We still have an important chapter left of this season. We must be convinced of our own abilities in the league."

Fiorentina must move on quickly from their loss as they prepare for a crunch clash with Rafa Benitez's third-placed Napoli in Serie A on Sunday.

Pirlo: Juventus 'fully deserved' to beat Fiorentina

    379479_heroa.jpg

Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo insists his side fully deserved to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Europa League after their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina.

A superb second-leg free kick from Pirlo overturned la Viola's away-goal advantage following a 1-1 result in Turin last week, and the 34-year-old feels the Bianconeri warranted their place in the next round.

"It was important to move forward [in the Europa League]," the veteran midfielder told Mediaset immediately after the match. "We wanted to qualify and I think it was a well deserved win from what we saw here tonight.

"A game that lasts 180 minutes [is a long time], but we knew we could do it. We want to continue progressing in Europe as well as Serie A."

Juventus, who currently lead the Italian top flight with a comfortable 14-point advantage over second-placed Roma, will find out who they face in the quarter-finals after the draw on Friday.

:yes:De Gea double save was decisive, says Fuster

    380589_heroa.jpg

David Fuster believes Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea's heroics in Wednesday's match at Old Trafford eventually cost Olympiakos a ticket for the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Greek side defended a two-goal lead from the first leg, but eventually crashed out of the competition as a Robin van Persie hat-trick meant United won the return 3-0.

Nevertheless, the Olympakos midfielder felt De Gea was the one who really made the difference as the Spanish shot stopper made a number of world-class saves.

"We had a really good chance, first my header which De Gea saved very well, and then the rebound fell to [Chori] Dominguez and he saved that too," Fuster told the official Uefa website.

"But goalkeepers have a job to do too and he did his very well."

Fuster then went on to stress that he felt proud of Olympiakos' performances in the Champions League, but was unable to hide his disappointment with their elimination at the hands of United.

"Of course, there's a bit of pride – we've had a good campaign and come through a group which was not easy. United are a historic club full of good players and we were close to beating them.

"The team are really disappointed. We had high hopes of going through to the next round, but it wasn't to be. Football is like that – they were able to get three goals and we didn't get any."

The draw for the quarter-finals is scheduled to take place in Nyon on Friday.

Spurs fightback didn't scare Benfica - Garay

    380923_heroa.jpg

Ezequiel Garay has hailed the way Benfica survived a late scare to beat Tottenham 5-3 on aggregate in the Europa League on Thursday.

The centre-back, 27, played a part as Spurs fought back from a goal down at Estadio da Luz before the hosts' penalty in stoppage-time secured a 2-2 draw for Jorge Jesus' men and kept their 16-month unbeaten record at home intact.

The second leg followed a surprise 3-1 win at White Hart Lane last week and the Argentine insisted that last year's Europa League runners-up did not doubt themselves at any point due to proper planning despite the tough task at hand.

"It was a very physical game, but fortunately we were able to secure a passage into the next stage of the Europa League," Garay told reporters.

"We knew what awaited us was a hard game but we showed that we were prepared for any eventuality."

Benfica are joined in the last eight of the European tournament by Juventus, AZ and Valencia among others, with the quarter-final draw to be held on Friday.

Wenger instrumental to my career, says Gibbs

    380803_heroa.jpg

Kieran Gibbs says Arsene Wenger has been "instrumental" to his career ahead of the Frenchman's 1,000th game in charge of Arsenal.

Wenger took over at the club in 1996, shortly after Gibbs' seventh birthday, and will reach the milestone when the Gunners travel to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Gibbs was handed his debut by the Frenchman in October 2007 and has gone on to feature 141 times for the club, and has now hailed the faith Wenger has shown in him since his bow.

"He's been instrumental and has pretty much given the platform for mine and other players' careers," he told the club's official website.

"He's the one who's given you the chance. Obviously you need that trust and want to give him that trust back.

"He's been very important (for me) and I think a lot of players will say the same. I think it's fair to say that the players that have played under him have tried to give him everything.

"He lets you learn for yourself before he tells you, which I thought was interesting.

"When I first started playing in the team a good few years ago he didn't give me too much advice. He let me learn for myself and then when he needed to speak to me you listen even more.

"He's got a way of making you feel that you deserve to be there and he has a certain way of giving you confidence to play."

Blanc: Champions League is PSG's ambition

    378787_heroa.jpg

Laurent Blanc says Paris Saint-Germain's project is still under construction but admits their aim is to win the Champions League this season.

The Ligue 1 champions booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition after beating Bayern Leverkusen over two legs in the last 16 and will learn of their last eight opponents at Friday's draw in Nyon.

"In the Champions League there are only great teams to play," said Blanc. "Real Madrid are in great form right now but so are many other sides.

"Our project is still under construction but our ambition is to win the Champions League."

The key to much of PSG's success has been the continued brilliance of star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has already scored 40 goals this season in all competitions.

And Blanc was quick to praise the 32-year-old for his ability to influence games and seize responsibility for deciding games time and again.

"Ibrahimovic scored a lot of goals at his previous clubs but the system we play here really suits him," said the former France coach.

"He is able to influence and guide a game and get on top of it. He is often the decisive factor."

PSG face Lorient on Friday night as they bid to extend their eight-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 and close in on a second successive title.

Totti open to World Cup selection

    361822_heroa.jpg

Roma veteran Francesco Totti has revealed he would be "proud" to receive the call to represent Italy at the World Cup this summer.

The 37-year-old is enjoying yet another fine campaign for the Giallorossi, who sit second in Serie A, leading to talk of a return to the international fold.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has spoken about the possibility of handing Totti a call-up for the tournament in Brazil, despite him retiring from international duty in 2007 after lifting the World Cup a year earlier."If Prandelli were to call me then I would be proud," Totti told Sky Sports Italia."I'd be happy, because the World Cup at Brazil would not come around again for me.

"But, I've always said that I will have to see how I am physically, if I would be alright or not. That's the main thing."Totti believes that Italy can repeat their Euro 2012 efforts, where they reached the final before losing to Spain, and has backed team-mates Mattia Destro and Alessandro Florenzi for selection.

"I hope that the national team can get to the final," he added. "They have the ability to do well, then Italy have increasingly come close to the semi-finals, so we hope it bodes well.

"To the World Cup I would call Destro and Florenzi - they are two players that are good for the group, that make the difference when playing."So, I think that they are players that absolutely should be called up. But, it is not for me to decide."

    Robben dreaming of 'beautiful season'

    380422_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich could retain their Bundesliga crown in record time this weekend, with Arjen Robben determined to ensure a "beautiful" end to the season at the Allianz Arena.

If Schalke and Borussia Dortmund drop points and the Bavarians beat Mainz, then Pep Guardiola's side will set a new league record by becoming the earliest champions in German history.

Bayern will also find out who they will face in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Friday having sealed their spot in the last eight with a two-legged victory over Arsenal.

Robben, 30, signed a two-year contract extension with the club on Thursday, which ties him to the Allianz Arena side until 2017, and revealed his continued thirst for silverware under Pep Guardiola.

"Until now it has been a great season, but we want to make her more beautiful," the Netherlands international told reporters on Thursday.

"There are eight top teams in the pot for the Champions League so I really don't have a favourite opponent."

Robben was joined by team-mate Toni Kroos at Thursday's press conference and the midfielder - who continues to be linked with a summer move to Manchester United - gave his thoughts on the prospect of sealing back-to-back Bundesliga titles.

"For us it doesn't matter when we are champions," he said. "It is important we stay in the rhythm and not let up in any game.

He added: "This year we have the eight top teams in Europe in the quarter-finals and I'm looking forward to two great games."

Barcelona must attack Madrid - Iniesta

    353602_heroa.jpg

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has challenged his team-mates to take the game to Real Madrid in the latest instalment of El Clasico on Sunday.

The two biggest clubs in Spanish football go head-to-head in the Spanish capital with Barcelona looking for awin that would keep their hopes of retaining La Liga alive. The Catalan giants sit four points behind leaders Real and know defeat could spell the end of their title defence.

"We know that we are always required to bring our very best football when we play at the Bernabeu," Iniesta told a news conference on Thursday."But we have to be, more than ever, Barca."We just have to be brave, keep possession. If we don't do that, we will have a bad time. It's a ground where the biggest demands are made of players.

"We have to go out and play to win and be daring. Things have normally worked out well when we have been daring."After it was suggested Barcelona fans would feel like underdogs heading into the match, Iniesta said they had every right to be confident."I don't like to think that there are supporters of our team who don't think we are able to win the league or win at the Bernabeu," he added.

"This is a team that has won so many different things. We have won the right to believe in ourselves."Yes, we have had bad games, but so has every team. Generally year after year we have been winning with this team."Big demands have been made of this team and we have responded and we have been winning well.

"If things don't go well it is normal that there will be criticism, but to think that Madrid are just going to beat us easily, I don't think anyone should think that.
"We are going there to play a good game. It's not as if we are 20 points from the leaders. We still have a chance of catching up. It's not that hard."

Torres: I want to play for Simeone

    355344_heroa.jpg

Fernando Torres has fuelled speculation he could rejoin Atletico Madrid this summer by admitting he would love to work with Diego Simeone.

The Chelsea striker made his name at the Vicente Calderon before moving to Liverpool in 2007. He subsequently joined the Blues three-and-a-half years later for a British record transfer fee of £50million.

His time at Stamford Bridge has been blighted by poor form, however, and he is no longer regarded as a first-choice for club or country.

Goal revealed on Wednesday that Chelsea will listen to offers for Torres at the end of the season and that Atletico were leading the race for his services.

The 30-year-old lined up alongside Simeone when he was a player at Atletico and would relish the chance to work under the Argentine.

He told AS: “I’ve had a lot of admiration for ‘El Cholo’ ever since we were team-mates. He helped me a lot. He taught me how to be a captain; he taught me a lot in the seasons we played together at Atleti.

“I always want to work with people I admire. I admired Rafa Benítez from the outside, and I had the chance to work with him. The same goes for Jose Mourinho or Luis Aragones.

"I’ve been lucky enough to work with people who, when you saw them from the outside, you said: ‘What have they got, what’s their secret, why do all the teams they coach work well…?’

“Simeone is like [Pep] Guardiola or like other coaches, who you’d like to go and see how they coach and learn.”

Asked if he planned to return to the Calderon, he added: “In football, you never know. You don’t know where you’re going to be tomorrow, in a week’s time or in 10 years’ time. How can I answer that question!”

Torres’ primary concern heading into the final few weeks of the season is not where he’ll be playing in August but whether he can make the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup finals.

“I’m going to work hard; that’s the only thing I know how to do and this final phase of the season is very important,” he said.

“The World Cup is around the corner, and the players who come into it in the best shape are the ones who will go.”

Torres was a member of the Spain side which won the 2008 European Championship and retained it four years later. He also claimed the Golden Boot for tournament top scorer as la Roja landed the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

“My numbers are there to see,” he said.

“I hope that this final phase of the season goes well for my team. We’re in there in the league and in the next round in the Champions League; it could be a great end of season.

“The more important games you play and the more you fight to win things, the higher the demands are and that’s when I’ve performed the best.”

    Jese successfully undergoes surgery

    380366_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have announced on their official website that Jese Rodriguez has successfully undergone surgery on his cruciate ligament injury in a clinic in Augsburg, Germany.

The promising attacker, 21, sustained the injury in the opening minutes of Madrid's 3-1 Champions League win over Schalke on Tuesday and will consequently be out of action for the remainder of the 2013-14 campaign.

"Jese Rodriguez has Thursday undergone surgery at the Hessingpark-Clinic in Augsburg at the hands of doctor Ulrich Boenisch, with Real Madrid club doctors Jesus Olmo and Francisco Morate supervising the operation," a statement on the club's official website reads.

"The successful surgery consisted of repairing the anterior cruciate ligament and the lateral meniscus of the player's right knee.

"The player will return to Madrid after he is dismissed from the hospital, which is expected in the upcoming days."

Jese had been one of the revelations of the 2013-14 campaign, scoring eight goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.

Dortmund no longer on par with Bayern, says Muller

    372361_heroa.jpg

Thomas Muller feels Borussia Dortmund are no longer on the same level as Bayern Munich following their disappointing domestic performances both last season and this campaign.

BVB finished 25 points behind Bayern in the Bundesliga table last term, while they are trailing Pep Guardiola's men by 23 points this year after previously winning back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.

"Dortmund are no longer on a par with Bayern, but are now a team that can make life difficult for us. At some point, Dortmund were the team that spurred us on to improve," Muller was quoted as saying by Abendzeitung.

"It is important that the situation changes again. I don't think things will always be like this, where we could be crowned Bundesliga champions as early as March.

"Things will get tighter at the top again."

Muller then went on to discuss his special relationship with Van Gaal and admitted the Dutchman has played a pivotal role in his success.

"Van Gaal is a special kind of guy, a special person. He has been very important to my career. We had a special relationship during his time at Bayern."

Van Gaal coached Bayern between 2009 and 2011.

Casillas has never disrespected me, says Lopez

    379773_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez has insisted that he has a good relationship with Iker Casillas and has never had any problems with the Blancos icon.

Lopez displaced Casillas as Madrid's No.1 under Jose Mourinho in 2012-13 and has held on to his place under Carlo Ancelotti this term.

A number of reports last year claimed that the two had fallen out with each other following their changed situation, but Lopez has stressed both goalkeepers have nothing but respect for each other.

"I have a good relationship with Iker. A relationship can change over time, but not because the situation changed," Lopez told El Larguero.

"I admire Iker and have a lot of respect for him. I have always respected him and he has never been disrespectful toward me.

"We have a normal and friendly relationship. We have respect for each other and are both loved by the fans. It's impossible to say anything negative about Iker, because I would be lying.

"If we reach the Champions League and the coach decides to play Iker, I would respect his decision."

Lopez, 32, has kept 12 clean sheets in 28 La Liga appearances so far this season.

Chelsea star Hazard plays down Ballon d'Or chances

    380170_heroa.jpg

Chelsea winger Eden Hazard knows that he must not let his standards slip if he is to have any chance of winning the Ballon d'Or.

The Belgium international has been praised following a series of impressive performances under Jose Mourinho this season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions as the London club moved to the top of the Premier League table and into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The 23-year-old's performances have led to suggestions he can be crowned the best player in world football next year, but he has played down his chances of winning the award currently held by Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

"The problem is I have to play well in every game. I am in good form, that is true, so I have to work hard and try to have lots of good games," he told reporters at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

"I have more consistency in my football. I have more experience. Last year was a good season for me. In Lille I had good seasons as well so, yes, I think that my form is more settled. I've managed to play well so that's good for me.

"It’s an aspiration for me to be as good as Ronaldo and Messi. I watch a lot of games they play in and I try to be on the same level.

"For me, for a young player, it’s very important to test myself against Ronaldo or Messi, just to be on the pitch with them would be good and I would try to do well."

Hazard's immediate aim is to secure three precious points against title rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after Chelsea were beaten 1-0 at Aston Villa in their last league outing.

"Now we are focused on the game against Arsenal because it is a very important moment in the season," he continued.

"We lost our last game so we have to do well in front of our fans. A good derby is a good opportunity to get back to winning ways."

Shaqiri open to Liverpool & Man Utd offers, says agent

    370217_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich wideman Xherdan Shaqiri would be open to a move to Liverpool or Manchester United should they make an offer, his agent has revealed.

The Switzerland international has found regular first team football hard to come by since joining the European champions in 2012 and is keen to seek out opportunities elsewhere.

His brother and representative, Erdin, told Swiss newspaper Blick: "Xherdan is 22. At that age he has to play regularly, which is not the case at the moment.

"We will wait til the summer. If then clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United or Inter will ask, we will surely listen."

Liverpool have actively been on the prowl for another wide attacker, failing with January moves for Yehven Konoplyanka and Mohammed Salah, while David Moyes has not been shy about his desire to mould the United squad to his own taste.

Shaqiri faces tough competition from the likes of Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller to break into Pep Guardiola's starting XI and has previously talked of the temptation of moving on, as Goal exclusively revealed last Sunday.
