Hummels: Bring on Chelsea, Barcelona or Manchester United

    380397_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels hopes to be paired with either Manchester United, Chelsea or Barcelona during Friday's draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Bundesliga outfit beat Zenit St Petersburg 5-4 on aggregate to make it out of the round of 16 and Hummels is now eager to test himself against a team he has not faced before.

"I'd like to play against a team I haven't played against before in the quarters. Maybe Manchester United, Barcelona or Chelsea," Hummels told the official Uefa website.

"At the end of the day, though, it doesn't matter who we get – they're all going to be difficult."

Hummels then reflected on Wednesday's second-leg against Zenit and admitted that BVB struggled against the Russian side.

"We're obviously pleased to get through. It's difficult when you know a draw or even a defeat could be enough.

"Zenit were a lot better than they were in the first-leg [which they lost 4-2]. I thought Danny in particular had a good game.

"When we went 1-0 down I was thinking: 'Great, that's exactly what we didn't need,' but in the end it didn't matter. Our equaliser calmed us down a bit."

Rooney reveals crisis talks after 'devastating' Liverpool loss

    379484_heroa.jpg

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed the players held crisis talks following the "devastating" loss to Liverpool on Sunday.

David Moyes's side were torn apart by their rivals as goals from Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez secured a 3-0 win for the Merseysiders at Old Trafford, a result that Rooney described as one of his worst days in football.

United did, however, recover from the demoralising defeat to beat Olmypiakos and reach the Champions League quarter-finals and, after Goal revealed the crisis talks between Moyes and his backroom team, Rooney has now lifted the lid on how the players met to discuss their plight.

"I'm not going to confirm the details of what happened, but obviously we talk," the England international said, as quoted by the Daily Mirror. "We talk after every game, whether we win, lose or draw, but we knew as a team what went wrong on Sunday.

"We didn't need anyone to tell us and we came out and delivered a big performance against Olympiakos. I think Sunday, as all the players will admit, was a devastating result for us.

"To lose 3-0 the way we did was hard to take and we had to stand up and really be at our best against Olympiakos, because that wasn't good enough. We’ve done that, but we have to kick on now and we have to give performances like that every week."

And Rooney now believes that the impressive 3-0 triumph over the Greek champions can inspire United to go on and win the Champions League. When asked if lifting the trophy this season would be possible, he added: "Yeah, I think we can.

"In cup football anything can happen. With a bit of luck, hopefully we can go far. We’re in the quarter-finals, so you never know what can happen from there."

Wenger confirms intention to extend Arsenal reign

    377648_heroa.jpg

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed he intends to extend his stay at the club saying he wants to remain with the Gunners for as long as possible.

Goal exclusively revealed on Friday that the Frenchman had turned down a £1 million-a-year pay hike before agreeing to extend his current deal.

Speaking ahead of his 1000th game in charge of Arsenal, against Chelsea on Saturday, Wenger admitted he has no desire to leave.

"I'm extremely motivated to stay for as long as possible but I accept that the next 1000 will be difficult," he told reporters.

"It's a privilege and an honour to manage 1000 games at this club. The club has always supported me. Time will tell if I managed to make this club bigger than it was when I arrived but I hope so.

"This club has given me a chance and I've turned many things down and shown my loyalty. Tomorrow I represent my club, I don't represent myself and I keep my personal feelings away from that.

"Today we can fight with the top clubs financially. I have to live with opinions from other people and accept them.

"The next period for us is to deliver trophies and competing with everyone at the top level. We have great players so I'm confident we can win trophies."

The Gunners travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday for a top-of-the-table clash with Chelsea and Wenger is feeling confident ahead of the game.

"It's the game of the season for us because it will be against a direct opponent," he added.

“The result will be linked with the performance on the day. We are on a good run.

"We have a doubt over Rosicky - he will have a test [on Friday] - but everyone else should be available."

'Outstanding' Flanagan set for new Liverpool deal - Rodgers

    381088_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers has likened Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan to Anfield legend Steve Nicol and vowed to give the youngster a new deal.

The Reds boss is gushing in his praise for the homegrown 21-year-old, who has caught the eye during his 14 Premier League appearances this season.

Flanagan's display in the 3-0 win at Manchester United last Sunday has prompted Rodgers to draw comparisons with Nicol, the former defender who won a host of silverware during his 13-year Liverpool career.

"He has been outstanding," the Northern Irishman said ahead of Saturday's clash with Cardiff City.

"He reminded me of Steve Nicol against Manchester United on Sunday - a right-footed player on the left side, steady, aggressive, no fear. He's been a revelation, and particularly in the big games.

"Jon will be given a new contract - no question.

"Come the summer he's got another year so he will definitely be given a new deal."

Rodgers has hailed the progress Flanagan is making, as he added: "It's great when you see a young player develop like that.

"You can see the confidence he has now. He has made himself an important member of the squad.

"He's only very young, but his performance levels are so mature."

Wenger is Arsenal's greatest manager, says Groves

    381035_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has been hailed as Arsenal's greatest manager by ex-player Perry Groves.

The Frenchaman was appointed as Gunners boss in 1996 and has led the club to three Premier League titles and four FA Cup triumphs, as well as final appearances in the Champions League and the Uefa Cup.

Arsenal have gone nearly nine years without a trophy, since a penalty shoot-out triumph against Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup final, but this season sees Wenger's side challenging firmly on two fronts.

Ahead of Wenger's 100th game in charge - at Chelsea on Saturday - Arsenal sit third in the Premier League, four points off their opponents in top spot, with an FA Cup semi-final against Wigan Athletic to come at Wembley next month.

Groves, who played for Arsenal for six years between 1986 and 1992, thinks that Wenger has firmly established himself as one of the club's icons.

"I think he's already an Arsenal legend," he told Perform. "He's already up there as Arsenal's greatest ever manager."

Groves also highlighted the impact Wenger has had in changing attitudes, not only at Arsenal, but in English football.

He added: "I'm a big fan because not only did he change the culture at Arsenal - the culture of the football and the philosophy there - he also changed the culture in English football in general.

"When he came in, there was a big drinking culture at Arsenal and at other clubs.

"He completely knocked the drinking culture on the head and made it clear to the player that if you want to be an athlete and prolong your career, the alcohol wasn't going to be in the equation.

"He changed diets, he changed physiology, he changed psychology, he was more on the sports science side and when he came in he was probably about 10 years ahead of everyone."

Liverpool interest in Rodrigo is 'normal', insists Benfica boss Jesus

    379895_heroa.jpg

Benfica boss Jorge Jesus has revealed Liverpool are among the Premier League clubs interested in his side’s in-form striker Rodrigo.

The 23-year-old Brazilian-born forward was only on the bench as his side eliminated Tottenham from the Europa League on Thursday night but has attracted interest from Brendan Rodgers' title-chasing side following a run of 10 goals in his last 16 appearances.

Questioned directly about Liverpool's interest in the striker, Jesus told reporters: "It's normal. Every Benfica player is in a big window.

"The league is full of high quality players so it's normal for other clubs to be interested.

"Rodrigo is going through a good moment."

Rodrigo was born in Rio but has represented Spain at various youth levels and endured an uneventful loan spell at Bolton four years ago as a 17-year-old when he managed only one Premier League goal, against Wigan, in his 17 games for the club.

Wenger rejected £1m-a-year pay hike before committing to new Arsenal deal

    361084_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger rejected a £1 million-a-year (€1.2m) pay hike before committing to extending his Arsenal contract.

The Gunners manager is set to formally sign a two-year extension that was agreed in principle with club chiefs last October.

Goal understands the fresh agreement will be on the same £7.5m-a-year (€9m) terms as Wenger’s current deal, after the Frenchman turned down the board's offer of a pay rise that would have lifted his basic salary to £8.5m-a-year plus bonuses.

It is believed that Wenger, who is the second-best paid manager in the Premier League after Jose Mourinho, felt that he is already well rewarded for his job.

However, the new deal will be supplemented by performance-related top-ups depending upon the team’s success. The Frenchman remains comfortably the top earner at the club, with his £145,000-a-week (€174,000) salary eclipsing that of Mesut Ozil, who earns £130,000 (€156,000) a week.

Wenger, who will take charge of his 1,000th match at the helm when Arsenal travel to title rivals Chelsea on Saturday, will extend his reign to a remarkable 20 years if his new deal is honoured, by which time he will be 66.

Goal revealed last October that Wenger had agreed a two-year contract extension and his backroom team have also committed to new agreements that will mirror those of the manager and run until 2016.

The key assistants include Wenger's long-standing ally Boro Primorac, assistant manager Steve Bould, first-team coach Neil Banfield, goalkeeper coach Gerry Peyton and fitness coach Tony Colbert.

Senior medical and technical staff have also agreed deals that run until 2016, while more junior members of Wenger's backroom team will remain on 12-month rolling contracts.

Arsenal have not yet announced the Frenchman's new deal and those of his backroom staff, but it is understood that the agreements are all in place and only need to be formally rubber-stamped.

Wenger retained the full backing of American owner Stan Kroenke and the rest of the board even when he came under more pressure last season from disgruntled supporters than at any point in his Arsenal career.

The Frenchman's position has been strengthened further by his team's fine record in 2013-14, with Arsenal still in contention to win the Premier League title and strong favourites to lift the FA Cup and end their nine-year trophy drought.

Real Madrid meet Dortmund, Bayern take on Manchester United - Champions League draw in full

    381099_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich will take on Manchester United in the standout tie of the Champions League quarter-finals.

Pep Guardiola's men are keen to become the first club to successfully defend the title, but will have to deal with the champions of England first, with the first leg scheduled to take place at Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid will be gunning for revenge against Borussia Dortmund after last year's elimination in the semi-finals, while Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain meet the Premier League's table-toppers, Chelsea, as the French outfit aim to improve on last year's run to the last eight.

Finally, Barcelona have been paired with Atletico Madrid, which will be a particularly interesting fixture given Diego Simeone's men caused the Catalans all kinds of trouble in their domestic dust-ups in the Supercopa de Espana and La Liga earlier this season.

The first legs will take place on April 1 and 2, with the second legs scheduled for April 8 and 9.

The draw for the semi-finals will be held on April 11, while the tournament concludes at Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica on May 24.

:(:(:(Van Persie sidelined for up to six weeks

    380610_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have revealed that Robin van Persie will be sidelined for "four to six weeks" with a sprained knee.

The Dutch striker scored a hat-trick against Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday night but was stretchered off late in the game, having suffered a knee problem during the closing stages of the encounter.

United boss David Moyes initially declared that the injury "did not look too bad" but later revealed that the club would send the 30-year-old for scans on Friday.

After Van Persie had been examined by the club's medical team, United confirmed that the striker could miss up to six weeks with the knee injury.

Crucially, the problem rules Van Persie out of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Manchester City, as well as both legs of United's Champions League quarter-final tie with last year's winners Bayern Munich, who were paired with Moyes' side on Friday.

The striker had already been ruled out of this weekend's visit to West Ham and will now also miss the games against Aston Villa, Newcastle, Everton and Norwich.

Van Persie, however, is likely to be fit for the World Cup, where he will represent the Netherlands in Brazil.

Celta 0-2 Malaga: Los Boquerones boost their survival hopes

    381339hp2.jpg

Ignacio Camacho scored twice to secure a valuable 2-0 win for relegation-threatened Malaga at Celta Vigo.

Bernd Schuster's men are among a host of teams tightly bunched together near the foot of La Liga, but now sit six points clear of the bottom three following a second successive away win.Camacho was twice left unmarked to score in the space of eight first-half minutes as Malaga seized control.

The 65th-minute dismissal of Duda, who was sent off for kicking out at Rafinha, threatened to hand Celta a lifeline, but they could not find a way back into the game and are only a point ahead of Malaga as a result.Camacho's opener came after 24 minutes. A cross from the right found its way to the far post and the 23-year-old midfielder had time and space to tap home from close range.

Abysmal marking from a free-kick allowed Camacho to grab a second on 32 minutes with a near-post header from Duda's left-wing delivery.Duda was subsequently dismissed for a needless show of petulance, yet Malaga were able to keep Celta at bay.

Freiburg 3-1 Werder Bremen: Christian Streich's men lift out of playoffs

    381337hp2.jpg

Freiburg boosted their Bundesliga survival bid by recording a long-overdue 3-1 home triumph over Werder Bremen on Friday.

Goals from Julian Schuster, Felix Klaus and Admir Mehmedi ensured Freiburg gained a top-flight success against Bremen at Mage Solar Stadion for the first time since 2001.Bremen, who are coached by former Freiburg boss Robin Dutt, grabbed a consolation through Nils Petersen following an error from defender Matthias Ginter.

However, that mattered little as the hosts, 4-1 winners over Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend, secured a vital three points to move out of the relegation play-off place and up to 14th ahead of the weekend's fixtures.

The first half was lit up by Schuster's fantastic 15th-minute strike, which saw the midfielder send a dipping half-volley into the top-right corner from 25 yards.Mehmedi then took centre stage as Freiburg assumed complete control after the interval.

The Swiss international laid on his side's second goal for Klaus in the 53rd minute, breaking clear down the left before pulling the ball back for his team-mate to side-foot home.Things soon got worse for Bremen as Mehmedi got on the scoresheet six minutes later after an effort from Klaus had been blocked.

Aaron Hunt intercepted a wayward pass from Ginter before squaring for Petersen to reduce the deficit with 20 minutes remaining, but Freiburg held firm thereafter to claim a valuable win.
