Lorient 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Les Parisiens stretch lead at the top

    381318hp2.jpg

Laurent Blanc came out on top in the tactical battle with Christian Gourcuff as Paris Saint-Germain beat Lorient 1-0 on Friday.

The PSG head coach had come under criticism from Gourcuff recently for his "hands-off" approach, but was able to celebrate after Thiago Motta's first-half goal sealed a sixth consecutive win in Ligue 1.After neat work from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it was Motta who slid in from close-range to find the net for the third time this season.

Lorient thought they had grabbed an equaliser in the closing minutes when susbtitute Bryan Pele fired beyond Salvatore Sirigu, but the 21-year-old was flagged offside, much to the relief of the PSG defence.

Les Parisiens move 11 points clear of second-placed Monaco, who host Lille on Sunday, while Lorient remain eight clear of the relegation zone and will still be looking nervously over their shoulders having played a game more than the teams below them. The visitors initially struggled to get into the game, with their time on the ball in the attacking third restricted by Lorient's effective pressing.

PSG were still dominant in regards to possession but the hosts offered a real threat on the counter-attack, and had an excellent chance to move ahead in the 15th minute.Vincent Aboubakar was released down the right and muscled past Maxwell before touching the ball to Yann Jouffre, but the midfielder's shot was pushed away by Sirigu.

Midway through the half there were concerns for Blanc as his captain Thiago Silva was forced off with a head injury, and PSG's frustrations grew when Edinson Cavani wasted a free header on 38 minutes.Despite being far from their best, the reigning champions were able to take the lead four minutes before the break as Motta scrambled the ball home following excellent work from Ibrahimovic.

The Sweden international was a key figure in a move that led to Cavani having a shot saved and Ibrahimovic then showed quick feet to force the ball towards goal again, with Motta beating Bruno Ecuele Manga to poke over the line.

The capital club began the second half with more attacking intent and Ibrahimovic had claims for a penalty turned away before seeing a dipping volley well-saved by Fabien Audard.Lorient felt they should have had a penalty of their own prior to the hour mark, but replays showed Alex had clipped Alain Traore outside the area and the referee did not even award a free-kick.

Blanc's side should have doubled their lead on 75 minutes when Cavani broke
clear of the Lorient defence on the left. His low cross found Christophe Jallet at the back post, but the full-back's low shot was somehow kept out by Audard with his left leg.

Aboubakar wasted a fine chance to level with five minutes to play as he headed wide from an unmarked position at the back post, and Pele thought he had snatched a point only for the assistant referee's flag to rule out his 87th-minute strike.

Blanc plays down Thiago Silva injury fears

    381331_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc believes the injury Thiago Silva picked up during the 1-0 over Lorient on Friday is not too serious.

The Brazilian centre-back was forced off in the first-half after he collided with a Lorient player as les Parisiens scraped past Christian Gourcuff’s side through Thiago Motta’s first-half strike. But Blanc said the injury is being dealt with and does not feel it is too bad.

He has a big bump and ice was put on it," Blanc told beIN Sport. "He received a nasty blow. Let’s call a spade a spade. When you jump like that, with the elbow, it hurts.

"But it is nothing serious. I hope anyway.”The 48-year-old admitted Lorient put up a good fight in Friday's match and was relieved to secure the win and stretch his side’s lead at the top of Ligue 1 to 11 points.

“We had a tough game. Especially in the first period because we had to adapt to the synthetic pitch. “And then there is the quality of Lorient, who are a team that likes to play fast, passing football.

“We missed the opportunity to get a second goal that would have given us some breathing space. “This is a good win, because it is always difficult here, especially against a team in form and motivated to fight.

“We were not great but we did what was necessary to get a hard-fought victory.”
Blanc was then asked if he will renew his contract with PSG and the former France international admits it could be tied up in the near future.

It's being discussed but it is not yet done. This could be done quickly.”

    :cool:Jese: I'll come back stronger

    380366_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid youngster Jese Rodriguez insists he will “come back stronger” from his cruciate ligament injury. The player was stretchered off in his side’s 3-1 win over Schalke in the Champions League on Tuesday and underwent surgery on his knee on Thursday.

And the 21-year-old is remaining positive in the wake of his injury and says he is completely focused on recovering and wants to return in even better shape than he was before.

“I really appreciate all the displays of affection I’ve received,” the forward told Real Madrid’s official website.“I’m taking all the encouragement to make me stronger and return with more determination and do what I know, which is play football. I have to take it easy to recover.

“[The operation] went well and I’m already thinking about recovering, which is the important thing and the only thing I can change from the bad stuff that happened.
“Now I’m not going to play for some time, but I’m going to come back stronger.”
The youngster says he is wishing his team the best as they prepare to take on fierce rivals Barcelona in a crucial league clash this weekend.

“I’ve spoken to my team-mates and the gaffer on the phone and I’ve given them my full support to go and win the Clasico. I’ve told them that what’s happened to me is extra motivation and they’ve said they’re going to be strong and dedicate the win to me.”He then went on to discuss his side’s Champions League quarter-final opponents, Borussia Dortmund.

“Dortmund are a great side; they’ve changed a few players from last year but at the end of the day it’s down to us.”

Barcelona's dominance is ending, says Valdano

    155560_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid player and coach Jorge Valdano believes Barcelona’s reign of dominance in La Liga is coming to an end while los Blancos are improving.
The Blaugrana have won the Spanish top flight four times in the last five seasons but currently sit four points behind their fierce rivals with ten games to go, including this Sunday’s Clasico.

And Valdano says Madrid are the favourites for the weekend's clash as Barca are currently on a downward slope but the current league leaders are moving forward under Carlo Ancelotti.“This game puts Madrid as the favourite for the first time in a long time,” the 58-year-old said.

“Madrid is rising and it feels as if Barcelona is coming to the end of this cycle.”
The ex-Real forward admitted the current crop of players at Gerardo Martino’s disposal is an exceptional group. However, he feels the Catalan giants will not see such an incredible team of talents again, pointing to the 2010 Ballon d’Or in which Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta made up the top three.“The club has undergone a generational miracle but it is not repeatable. We have never seen a school take a Golden Ball, as well as Silver and Bronze before and we will not see it again.”

Valdano then turned his attention to Barca star Neymar, insisting the young Brazilian doesn’t have it easy at the moment.“He's young and he is surrounded by the extra-sporting controversy involving his family.

“It does not seem comfortable. In addition, there is a sort of complex playing alongside Messi.”

Alonso: Bale, Ronaldo & Benzema are decisive

    376927_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has praised his team’s three main stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale. The trio have combined to net an incredible 50 of los Blancos' 77 league goals so far in the first season they’ve been together.

And Alonso says the Real front three fit well together as a partnership and often make the difference for the team.“There’s no secret, they’re just good players that have an understanding with each other," he told AS.

"They are decisive, they score many goals and provide a lot of assists,”
The midfielder is looking forward to Sunday’s match against his side’s fierce rivals Barcelona and is anticipating a fiery clash against Gerardo Martino’s men.

“They are great players, and they’ve spent many years playing together and know each other very well," he said of the weekend's opponents.“Historically and traditionally they are very intense games and both of us are normally fighting for trophies.

“They are highly competitive and tense affairs and I always prepare in the same way because it’s the best way to go into games: visualising a little of what could happen, thinking about what could go against you.”

Guardiola not celebrating Bundesliga title yet

    381138_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola is refusing to get ahead of himself as Bayern Munich close in on a 23rd Bundesliga title.

The Allianz Arena outfit visit Mainz on Saturday knowing victory - combined with slip-ups from Borussia Dortmund and Schalke - would be enough to see them win the league with eight games to spare.

However, despite holding a staggering 23-point lead at the top, Guardiola insists he is not celebrating just yet."Let me win the Bundesliga title first and then I'll tell you what it's like to win it," the Bayern coach said. "It's strange to have such a big lead in the table, it's not normal. But we've won a lot of games."

And the Spaniard insisted that overcoming in-form Mainz was far from a foregone conclusion."They've only lost one of their last 11 Bundesliga games," he stressed. "They have a good team, we know that."

Guardiola also expressed his delight that Arjen Robben had put pen to paper on a new deal, but revealed Thiago Alcantra may miss the weekend fixture after acquiring a thigh injury."I'm delighted Arjen Robben extended his contract because he's an outstanding player," he added. "He's so focused and he lives for football.

"I don't think Thiago Alcantara will play, he might stay in Munich. He picked up a knock on his thigh, but it's not serious."

Barcelona really need three points - Valdes

    381264_heroa.jpg

Victor Valdes has admitted Barcelona "really need" three points from Sunday's Clasico clash with Real Madrid.

The game will mark the goalkeeper's final Clasico appearance at the Santiago Bernabeu before he leaves Camp Nou when his contract expires in the summer.

Barca go into the game four points adrift of leaders Madrid having won the first league meeting between the sides 2-1 earlier this season, with Valdes well aware of just how decisive the game could prove to be.

"This Clasico is going to be my last game in Bernabeu as a Barcelona player," said the 32-year-old.

"I have a high respect for that stadium. It is an amazing place to play in because the fans give a lot of support to Real Madrid - especially in the Clasicos - and that makes playing there very special, even if you are on the other side.

"I would like to be able to say in a few days that we won because we really need those three points if we want to dispute the title against Real Madrid."

Andres Iniesta spoke earlier this week of Barcelona's need to attack Madrid and Valdes was quick to echo the sentiments of his team-mate.

"We approach the Clasico with hope and a winning mentality, as always," he added. "That is the only way you can win in (the) Bernabeu.
"We have to go there and take the control of the game, play directly, keep the possession of the ball and play offensively."

Kroos refusing to underestimate Man United

    379704_heroa.jpg

Toni Kroos has urged Bayern Munich not to judge Manchester United by their current position in the Premier League table.

Pep Guardiola's side will face the reigning English champions in the quarter-finals of the Champions League following Friday's draw in Nyon, with the Bavarians sure to be favourites ahead of the tie.

United have endured a torrid campaign to date in David Moyes's first campaign in charge since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson. They sit seventh in the league, while they required a stirring comeback to defeat Olympiakos 3-0 (Agg 3-2) to reach the last eight in Europe.

In contrast, Champions League holders Bayern have made a seamless transition to life after Jupp Heynckes and Guardiola's men could lift the Bundesliga title as early as this weekend if they win and other results go in their favour.

But Kroos - who has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer - with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2014 - will not be taking the tie lightly.

He said on his official Facebook page: "A very interesting draw for us! We shouldn't measure Man U by their current position in the English table."

Bayern and United have considerable history when it comes to the Champions League, with United defeating the Bundesliga champions 2-1 in the famous 1999 final.

However, it was the Bavarians who came out on top in the most recent encounter between the two sides after a 4-4 aggregate draw in the 2010 quarter-finals, with FCB going through on away goals.

The first leg of the last eight tie will be played one April 1 or 2, with the return leg scheduled for April 8 or 9.

:cool:Giggs: I want to play more for Manchester United

    380604_heroa.jpg

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs says he would like to feature more regularly after starring in their 3-0 win over Olympiakos in midweek.

David Moyes' men overcame a 2-0 deficit from the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with the Greek champions after a hat-trick from Robin van Persie, with Giggs also starting and playing a key role in the victory.

And the 40-year-old admits he would enjoy a more prominent role in the United setup, having featured just 11 times in the Premier League this term.

"I hope so, yeah, I have probably not played as much as I would like in the last few months but hopefully," the Welshman told reporters.

"I think the team [against Olympiakos] had a mixture of a lot of things: pace, experience, power. That's what Manchester United is about and we showed that. We showed what we are capable of."

However, Giggs did warn that United's poor performances this season could lead to a long-term decline if the club are not careful.

"Well, you can see why people are saying that because we haven't produced it this season on a regular basis," Giggs said.

"I know from experience what these players are capable of and a lot of them have been written off. I think there is a lot of quality within the dressing room. We showed it [on Wednesday] and we have to show it more consistently.

"We have just been not consistent enough. And not produced football like we have [against Olympiakos]. We are capable of it so that's the disappointment. I see every day in training what the lads are capable of and they have not transferred that into the games and we need to do that."

Calderon: Ronaldo could return to United

    380261_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes Cristiano Ronaldo could be tempted back to Manchester United in the future.

The Portugal forward spent six years at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009 before moving to Madrid in a then world record £80 million deal.

Ronaldo - who has scored 41 goals in all competitions this season - was linked with a return to his former club last summer before signing a new contract, but Calderon believes he could pull on the red shirt again one day.

"You never know," he told talkSPORT. "I know when I signed him, he was saying that Manchester for him has been like his house, he was quite happy there with the fans, with the club."At the time with (Alex) Ferguson, he considered him like a father, and everything for him in Manchester was perfect."But he wanted to come to Madrid and play for Real, and you never know, maybe at the end of his career he would like to come back to England and back to Manchester.

"His strength is that every day he gets up in the morning and thinks only about being better than the day before."This makes him unbeatable. I haven't seen a player like him in my life. I don't see the limit - I don't know what is going to be the highest level for this player."

Real Madrid sit three points clear of local rivals Atletico at the top of La Liga and meet Barcelona - a point further back in third - in El Clasico on Sunday."It's clear now that this year, mainly the last two or three months, Real Madrid has been stronger than Barcelona," Calderon added. "They've played much better.

"Four points ahead is a good distance. In fact, if Real Madrid wins, it's going to be a problem for Barcelona to win this league."But don't forget Atletico, they are still there, they are playing well and it is a very strong team.

"I think in this match, Real Madrid has a slight advantage. Barcelona's midfield is weaker this year. I don't know why - maybe the players are in a different way of playing, maybe the change of the coach. I don't know."

Madrid were drawn against Borussia Dortmund in Friday's Champions League quarter-final draw.

    Klopp: Madrid draw no surprise

    380909_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp is not surprised to be facing familiar foes Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Bundesliga outfit were drawn against the Spanish giants in the knockout rounds for the second year in succession at Friday's draw, following on from their semi-final meeting last season.

Dortmund were victorious in that tie, with Robert Lewandowski inspiring them to a 4-1 first-leg win before they held on at the Bernabeu, losing 2-0 to progress 4-3 on aggregate. It was the second time the Germans had got the better of Madrid last season, after taking four points off them in the group stages of the competition and Klopp stressed his belief that the cream always rises to the top in the Champions League.

"It's a good draw," he told the club's official website. "If you repeatedly qualify for the round of the last eight teams in Europe, you just have to expect that there are just more frequent pairings - as in this case."We're thrilled with this challenge and will try to use our small chance. The fact we play first in Madrid, can be an advantage.

"It is certainly not the time now to raise the white flag."

United tie a 'great draw', says Bayern Munich ace Robben

    380422_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben believes being paired with Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-finals represents a “great draw” for the holders.

The runaway Bundesliga leaders visit Old Trafford in the first leg on April 1 before the return at the Allianz Arena a week later.Robben, who scored the winner in last season’s final victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, was in a confident mood after learning of Bayern's next assignment.

“It is a great draw,” he told Sky Sports News. “I look forward to these matches.
“We play away from home in the first leg. That is an advantage. “Manchester is not in the best shape. But it still is a very good team.”

Bayern skipper Philipp Lahm was more circumspect and insisted they will not be fooled by United’s domestic struggles when they face David Moyes’ side.United are languishing in seventh place in the Premier League in what has been a difficult season but Lahm is still expecting a tough tie.

The Germany full-back said: “We should not be blinded by the standings in England. We have to perform well in both matches. Then we'll have a good chance to progress to the semi-finals.“We are the holders and we are the favorites in these kind of matches.”
