Dante signs Bayern renewal until 2017

    361527_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich have announced on their official website that Dante has signed a new contract with the Bundesliga champions until the summer of 2017.

The Brazil international’s previous deal was due to expire in June 2016 and Manchester United were believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation at the Allianz Arena.

Nevertheless, he has now ended all speculation about his future by inking a one-year extension with Bayern.

"Joining Bayern was the best decision of my life," the 30-year-old commented on his new deal.

"Everything is good here, the club, the team, the trophies, the atmosphere. Bayern are the right club for me. That's why I am happy to stay here at least until 2017.

"I am confident that we will have plenty of success in the years to come."

Dante joined Bayern from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2012 and has since developed into a key player at the Bavarians.

The centre-back has made 22 Bundesliga appearances so far this term, scoring twice in the process.

    Benzema demands Real bounce back

    382322_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema believes the club cannot afford any more slip-ups in the league title chase after Sunday's Clasico defeat.

The France striker scored two first-half goals as Real fell to a 4-3 loss against Barcelona at the Bernabeu - a result that sees city rivals Atletico at the summit of the Spanish top flight by virtue of their head-to-head record against Carlo Ancelotti's men.

And, with just one point separating Real, Atleti and Barca, Benzema has stressed the importance of a return to winning ways, beginning at Sevilla on Wednesday.
"It was a night with a lot of key moments and now we'll try and beat Sevilla," he told reporters."At this point in the season the matches are all finals and we know that Atletico take on Barcelona on the final day, so we have to think about ourselves in order to win."

Real were 3-2 up when they saw Sergio Ramos dismissed for a challenge on Neymar, with Lionel Messi converting two subsequent penalties to complete his hat-trick and secure all three points for Barca.Full-back Marcelo believes it is important Real identify their mistakes ahead of forthcoming fixtures.

"We are going to try and get a victory away to Sevilla," he added. "We have to see what our errors were so that we don't repeat them."It's another game, another final and we have to win no matter what."

Beat Bayern & Manchester United can go all the way, says Scholes

    380615_heroa.jpg

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United can win the Champions League if they defeat Bayern Munich in the last eight.

David Moyes's men beat Olympiakos 3-0 last week to seal a 3-2 aggregate victory and were subsequently drawn against the current holders of the competition on Friday.

Bayern sit 23 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, while United are seventh in the Premier League, but Scholes has told his former team-mates to "believe" as they look to upset the odds against the German giants – and also claimed 40-year-old Ryan Giggs will be key to their hopes.

"There's so many good players in either side, obviously United haven't had the season they would have liked and the players haven't been in the best of form," he told Goal. "Wayne Rooney will be a big player for United with Robin van Persie gone.

"Ryan Giggs as well, I know he's 40 years of age but his performances are incredible. I think he would be saved especially for those two games now, because we need that kind of quality in the park.

"For the Bayern Munich side, I don't know where to start. There's so many top players. There's [Arjen] Robben, [Franck] Ribery, [Mario] Gotze, [Mario] Mandzukic, there's so many quality players.

"I haven’t even mentioned Toni Kroos as well. I saw the performance against Arsenal in the round of 16 and it was the best midfield performance I've ever seen.

"We'll be up against a top quality team, but we also have to believe. It will be very difficult, it's one of the teams you wouldn’t want to get but if we can beat them, who knows, we can go all the way to the final."

Scholes also conceded that United will have to win Europe's elite club competition if they are to play in it next season, as they currently lie 11 points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the league.

However, he does not believe an enforced absence from the tournament would put off potential summer signings, as United remain one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"If we don’t qualify for the Champions League, it's looking like the only way we can do that is if we win the tournament," he added. "It will be difficult, but we have to remember Manchester United is one of, if not the biggest club in the world.

"And to sell that to new players, you just have to say that it's only a year that we are out of the Champions League, and we can bring in the quality players we want to to help us get back to where we should be.

"But I do agree it will be difficult to sign players when you are not in the Champions League. Every top player around Europe, that's what they want, they want Champions League football. But you have to hope that the pull of Manchester United is big enough to bring players in."

Carrick desperate to win Manchester derby for fans

    342768_heroa.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says that the squad are just as desperate to beat Manchester City as the Red Devils fans are.

David Moyes's men were humiliated by their title-chasing rivals in the reverse fixture in September when Manuel Pellegrini's men beat them 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium but, after two consecutive victories for his side, the England international is eager to avenge that defeat.

"We understand the fans and the result they want and for us as players it's exactly the same," he told The Sun.

"I've been part of this club for a long time now and you know what means a lot. This is certainly one of them.

"We'll go into the City game looking forward to it. It's obviously a tough game but it's a tough game for both teams."

United have also been thrashed more recently by Liverpool, who won 3-0 at Old Trafford earlier in March, and Carrick admits that the pain of that defeat still lingers in the dressing room.

"It was a bad day for us and we suffered just as much as the fans," he added. "It's horrible after a game like that. The dressing room was as you'd expect, really.

"We were very disappointed and frustrated. You don't watch the telly or leave the house for a couple of days if you can help it.

"You suffer from those results just like everybody else. Thankfully, we had a game to look forward to pretty quickly so that helped to give us something else to focus on but something like that, losing against Liverpool at home, hurts badly.

"We're well aware of what those games mean to everyone and, believe me, it means the same to the players but we can't go into Tuesday thinking about previous weeks."

Tevez: Everybody wants to beat Juventus

    382160_heroa.jpg

Carlos Tevez has admitted that Catania made Juventus work hard for their 1-0 win in Sunday evening's Serie A encounter and feels the Bianconeri's opponents always seem to be able to do something extra when they face the reigning champions.

The Argentine attacker helped his side to the full three points with his goal at the hour mark, but Tevez was quick to acknowledge that Catania caused Juve plenty of trouble.

"It was a difficult game, Catania were very aggressive," Tevez was quoted as saying on the club's official website.

"It was a real battle out there, but everyone who plays Juventus clearly wants to win against us."

The former Manchester City striker then went on to stress that the Old Lady cannot afford to lose focus in the remainder of the season and must keep giving their all in Serie A before turning their attention to the Europa League.

"We now need to treat each of our remaining league games as finals.

"After that we’ll start thinking about how we’re going to tackle the Europa League."

Juventus were paired with Olympique Lyonnais during last week's draw for the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Roma 2-1 Torino: Last-gasp Florenzi strengthens Giallorossi's grip on second spot

    382831hp2.jpg

Alessandro Florenzi struck in the dying seconds as Roma strengthened their stranglehold on second place in Serie A with a 2-1 win over Torino.

The in-form Mattia Destro had opened the scoring at the Stadio Olimpico just before the break only to see the league's top scorer, Ciro Immobile, level matters shortly after half-time with a sublime volley.

However, Florenzi struck in the dying seconds to earn the Giallorossi a win that moves them nine points ahead of Napoli in the battle for automatic qualification for next season's Champions League.

Roma had gone into the game without the suspended Mehdi Benatia, who was replaced in the starting line-up by debutant Rafael Toloi, but they were, at least, buoyed by the return of Daniele De Rossi after a three-game ban.

It was Maicon who was most involved early on, though. The Brazilian was denied what looked like a clear penalty when he was felled in the area by Kamil Glik and then called Daniele Padelli into action with an attempted lob.

The Torino goalkeeper then kept out a well-struck effort from Francesco Totti before pulling off a remarkable double-save to deny Destro and then Miralem Pjanic.

However, Roma finally made the breakthrough four minutes before half-time when Gervinho slipped the ball through for Destro, who prodded the ball past Padelli for his ninth Serie A goal of the season.

The hosts' lead did not last long, though, because Insigne levelled matters in the 52nd-minute with a sensational left-footed volley from an acute angle, after latching onto a long ball from Giuseppe Vives.

Alessio Cerci and Gervinho both squandered decent openings during a frantic finale but an increasingly absorbing encounter looked destined to finish level.

However, in the first minute of injury time, Gervinho produced another astute ball to put Florenzi in on the left-hand side and the Italy international beat Padelli with a sweet low strike to send the Olimpico into raptures.

Arsenal 2-2 Swansea City: Flamini own goal hands Gunners another setback

    382902hp2.jpg

Arsenal's hopes of regaining some Premier League momentum were judderingly ended by a late own goal from Mathieu Flamini as they drew 2-2 with Swansea City.

Wilfried Bony jumped clear of Thomas Vermaelen less than a quarter of an hour into the game, meeting Neil Taylor's cross to score against the run of play.

Despite having dominated until then, the Gunners dropped off and struggled to turn possession into meaningful attempts on Michel Vorm's goal.

The game turned on its head in the space of two second-half minutes, however, with Lukas Podolski at the heart of it. First, the substitute finished from close range before, only moments later, bursting down the left and crossing for Olivier Giroud to score.

But there was to be a stoppage-time sickener for Arsenal when Flamini calamitously put the ball into his own net, rebounding off the midfielder after hitting the feet of Wojciech Szczesny.

The result sees Arsenal two points adrift of third-placed Liverpool and six behind leaders Chelsea, while a point for Swansea will prove valuable in their fight for survival.

Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both lined up for Arsenal after the Football Association cleared up the confusion that surrounded the former's sending-off in Saturday's humiliation at Chelsea.

There was no mistaking the identity of Swansea's biggest change, as Michu – responsible for two late goals in his side's 2-0 win at Arsenal last season - came into Garry Monk's starting XI for the first time in more than three months.

It was Oxlade-Chamberlain who was first to test Michel Vorm in the Swansea goal, unleashing a fierce half-volley from the edge of the box.

Swansea posed little threat in the early stages but found themselves ahead when left-back Neil Taylor, starting in place of Ben Davies, found Bony with a cross from deep, which the Ivorian headed home from 12 yards. Arsenal boss Wenger had refused to talk to the media in the build-up to Tuesday's match but it was the home fans who fell silent in the immediate aftermath of the opener.

Half of the ground mustered a cheer nine minutes later when Per Mertesacker made the net ripple with a header from a corner but his effort deceptively crept the wrong side of the left-hand upright.

Arsenal's quest for a leveller left them exposed at the back at times and Swansea wasted a chance to double their lead when they outnumbered the home defence four to two, before Santi Cazorla tested Vorm with a low strike two minutes from the break.

The hosts emerged for the second period with pre-interval boos still ringing in their ears but their chances were limited, with Tomas Rosicky's wayward 20-yard strike about as good as it got for Wenger's men.

Podolski looked bright after coming on in place of Oxlade-Chamberlain, though, and tapped home after good work by Gibbs down the right.

And the Germany attacker turned provider almost immediately after, providing the cross for Giroud to convert from close range moments later.

But Arsenal were left red-faced and despondent at the death when Leon Britton's surge into the area prompted a series of unfortunate events that led to Flamini deflecting the ball into his own net.
