Atletico Madrid 1-0 Granada: Diego Costa keeps Rojiblancos on top

    377583hp2.jpg

Diego Costa fired Atletico Madrid back to the top of La Liga after being temporarily displaced by Barcelona as their tight title race continued with a 1-0 win at home to Granada on Wednesday.

Winning without playing in top gear is often heralded as a hallmark of champions and Diego Simeone's side are well-placed for the title on that basis, with Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat at Sevilla putting them clear at the top.

Atleti struggled to break down their opponents in a frustrating first half that saw Arda Turan go closest, but top scorer Diego Costa came to their rescue after 63 minutes with his 24th Liga goal of the season.

Real's defeat means Atleti are now a point clear of Barcelona as the advantage in the title race continues to swing between the three teams.

But it is the season's surprise package Atleti who now appear in control after a 17th consecutive home league game without defeat.

Arda had the hosts' best chances in the opening stages, first prodding wide after David Villa's near-post flick was blocked and then skewing a poor effort off target from 20 yards.

Simeone had called for a vocal backing from home support ahead of the game and they did their best to generate an atmosphere, despite there being little to shout about on the pitch.

Youssef El-Arabi nodded a Granada corner wide and Atleti midfielder Tiago saw a goal chalked off for a foul in the build-up as things heated up before the break.

The atmosphere dropped as Thibaut Courtois was forced to keep out Yacine Brahimi's fierce effort and the visitors were quick out the blocks in the second half, Recio and Jeison Murillo somehow failing to turn Fran Rico's corner home.

But Atleti finally got their act together just after the hour as Costa put them ahead.

Having seen Roberto keep out a firm header from Gabi's corner just two minutes earlier, Costa met another delivery from the home captain and got his effort beyond the veteran goalkeeper to raise the volume in the Vicente Calderon once again.

Atleti looked to see the game out with a much more disciplined showing after the goal and the players may have been buoyed as a roar went around the ground 75 minutes in as news of Real going behind filtered through the crowd.

Roberto did well to deny Gabi and substitute Diego as Atleti pushed for a second to clinch the result, but Atleti were ultimately left to settle for the narrow scoreline.

Defeat for Granada keeps them looking over their shoulders, just six points clear of the bottom three, while the hard-fought three points could prove crucial come the season's conclusion for Atleti as they seek their first league crown since 1996.

Liverpool 2-1 Sunderland: Gerrard & Sturridge keep Kop title push alive

    383304hp2.jpg

Liverpool kept up the pressure on their Premier League title rivals with a 2-1 win that plunged Sunderland into deeper trouble.

Manchester City's comprehensive victory over champions United in Tuesday's derby meant that all eyes were on Anfield as Brendan Rodgers' side attempted to respond.

Sitting a point behind City - who now have two games in hand - and four adrift of Chelsea, it was essential that Liverpool grabbed a seventh successive league win to stay in touch.

After an opening 30 minutes of few chances, captain Steven Gerrard was on hand to settle the palpable nerves with a stunning free kick that Vito Mannone could not keep out.

With order restored, Liverpool appeared on course for a comfortable night when Daniel Sturridge grabbed a 20th league goal of the campaign - in the process ensuring that he and Luis Suarez became the first Liverpool duo since Roger Hunt and Ian St John in 1963-64 to pass the mark in one season.

However, Sunderland threatened a twist in the tale when the impressive Ki Sung-Yueng pulled one back with 14 minutes left.

The visitors continued to press forward thereafter but fell short of a leveller that would have taken them to within two points of safety.

The home side looked every bit like a team who had not suffered defeat in 11 league games as they bossed the opening exchanges.

Yet, for all their attacking verve, Liverpool struggled to fashion clear-cut opening as Sunderland showed great restraint by largely operating with 10 men behind the ball.

Such discipline was severely lacking as the hosts took the lead six minutes before half-time, however.

Philippe Coutinho took advantage of Lee Cattermole's heavy touch to nip in and free Suarez, who was clumsily brought down on the edge of the area by Santiago Vergini.

The Argentinian was perhaps fortunate to escape with just a yellow card, although that was scant consolation when Gerrard's subsequent curler proved too powerful for Mannone – who did not help himself with a step to his right just before Gerrard struck the free-kick into the opposite corner.

To their credit, Sunderland almost found an immediate response as Connor Wickham - only recalled from a loan spell at Leeds this week - saw a deflected effort force a good save from former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Any hopes of a turnaround were virtually extinguished immediately after the break as Sturridge cut inside Andrea Dossena before seeing his curling effort deflect off Wes Brown and beyond a helpless Mannone.

Buoyed by grabbing his 20th Premier League goal of the campaign, Sturridge almost added another soon afterwards - only to see his effort hit Suarez.

The game had suddenly taken on and end-to-end nature, with Cattermole and Sturridge rattling the crossbar in quick succession.

Sunderland set up a tense finale as Ki, who impressed having come off the bench, headed home fellow substitute Adam Johnson's corner.

But despite their late efforts the visitors could not fashion a second, as Liverpool held on for three vital points.

Monaco 6-0 Lens: Les Rouge et Blanc storm into Coupe de France semi-finals

    383316hp2.jpg

Monaco routed Ligue 2 outfit Racing Club de Lens 6-0 to progress through to the semi-finals of the Coupe de France on Wednesday.

Claudio Ranieri’s men opened the scoring in controversial fashion through Lucas Ocampos before a second was added by Dimitar Berbatov prior to half-time.

After Lens had a goal disallowed for offside early in the second period, the floodgates opened, with Emmanuel Riviere and Fabinho on target before Ocampos added his second of the night. A late Loic Landre own goal compounded the guests’ difficult evening.A much-changed home side - six changes were made to the team that drew with Lille at the weekend - dominated this game from the outset and were rewarded for their efforts early on when Fabinho’s cross was converted from close range by Ocampos, whom replays showed was offside.

Shortly before the break, Berbatov added number two. A quick exchange with Riviere at the edge of the box presented the Bulgarian with a shooting opportunity that he fired past Rudy Riou and into the Lens net.

Aggrieved at the nature of the hosts’ opener, the northerners would feel even more frustrated early in the second half when Adama Coulibaly had the ball in the net following an error from Silvio Romero, but the Argentina international goalkeeper was spared by the offside flag.Three minutes later, Monaco were firmly out of sight. Berbatov was again the architect, releasing Riviere to run through and score a third for the Stade Louis II outfit.

And only a short time afterwards, the home side benefitted from some sloppy marking from their guests as Fabinho had time to control the ball at the back post before shooting home after a free kick delivered from Mounir Obbadi.

Now playing with terrific fluency and confidence, Ligue 1’s second-placed side almost saved their best until last, as Ocampos grabbed a second for himself midway through the half. Nabil Dirar and Riviere were to the forefront of the sweeping move, which the Argentine concluded with a tidy finish.Landre’s own goal in the closing stages merely capped a night Antoine Kombouare’s side will wish to forget.

Monaco are now in the last four of the competition along with Guingamp and Ligue 2 side Angers. Either Rennes or Lille will join them, with that all-Ligue 1 encounter scheduled for Thursday.

Fiorentina 0-2 Milan: Balotelli stunner dents Viola's Champions League hopes

    383273hp2.jpg

Clarence Seedorf saw AC Milan win for the first time in six attempts with a comfortable 2-0 success at Fiorentina.

Goals in each half from Philippe Mexes and Mario Balotelli saw Seedorf's mid-table side lift their flagging season as they produced a masterful display at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.Fiorentina, meanwhile, were dealt a blow to their Champions League hopes, after successive Serie A wins had lifted hopes of a late surge towards third place.

Mexes nodded in from close range from a Balotelli free-kick midway through the first half before Balotelli himself doubled the lead with a superb free-kick.

In the end it was comfortable for the visitors, as they finally began to show signs of returning to something like their best.Seedorf rang the changes after the "positive step" of Sunday's 1-1 draw at Lazio, with goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, Sulley Muntari, Adel Taarabt and Balotelli all restored to the starting line-up.

But it was Fiorentina who carved out the first chance of the game after a patient opening, with Milan loanee Alessandro Matri going close with a neat header from a deep Gonzalo Rodriguez cross.

The hosts were forced into an early change when defender Manuel Pasqual left the field in the 18th minute with an apparent injury, to be replaced by Argentinean Facundo Roncaglia. And they were behind in the 23rd minute when a long-range free-kick from Balotelli was mishandled by goalkeeper Neto and Mexes was there to head the rebound over the line from close range.

A weaving run from Juan Cuadrado resulted in Abbiati being forced into a smart save at his near post as Fiorentina sought an immediate response, but their deficit was almost doubled on the half-hour mark when Muntari collected a loose ball 35 yards out and looped a volley on goal that Neto had to deal with.

Milan were strong in midfield and frustrating the hosts, and a counter attack lead by Taarabt saw the Moroccan draw another smart save from Neto before Muntari lashed wastefully over from an inviting right-wing Keisuke Honda cross five minutes before the break.

Matri squandered a golden opportunity to equalise just three minutes into the second period when Joaquin headed a deep cross into the box and the unmarked 29-year-old headed wide with the goal at his mercy.Spanish winger Borja Valero then saw a 20-yard left-footed drive go narrowly over for Fiorentina, as Milan continued to keep Vincenzo Montella's side at arm's length.

And in the 64th minute they doubled their lead with a piece of individual brilliance.
Balotelli had begun to grow into the game, and he curled an exquisite 20-yard free-kick over the wall to beat Neto for his 12th league goal of the season to put the game beyond the hosts.

Fiorentina piled on some late pressure but their play was ragged and prompted no clear cut chances as Milan comfortably saw the game out.

Juventus 2-1 Parma: Tevez double ends visitors unbeaten Serie A streak

    383282hp2.jpg

Juventus ended Parma's unbeaten run and kept theirs chugging along thanks to two first-half goals from Carlos Tevez in Wednesday's 2-1 win.

Antonio Conte's men are all but ensured of a third consecutive Scudetto and restored their 14-point lead at the summit by seeing off a spirited effort from Parma, who had previously gone 17 league games without defeat.

Tevez proved to be the key for Juventus, the 30-year-old taking his tally for the season to 18 with a double that re-establishes his position as the top scorer in Serie A.The Argentine striker gave Juve the lead with a fine individual effort midway through the first half and then doubled the advantage in the 32nd minute with a typical poacher's goal.

Parma fought back and cut the deficit as Cristian Molinaro found the net against his former club to give the visitors' hope, which was effectively ended almost immediately after when ex-Juve striker Amauri was sent off for elbowing Giorgio Chiellini.Defeat keeps Parma sixth in Serie A, behind Inter who can extend their advantage to three points with a win against Udinese on Thursday.

Key duo Paul Pogba and Fernando Llorente returned to the Juventus starting XI after being left out of the 1-0 win at Catania, but the hosts struggled to break down Parma in the opening stages.

And it was Roberto Donadoni's side who crafted the game's first real chance after 17 minutes when Cristian Molinaro connected with Alessandro Lucarelli's right-wing cross, only to be denied by a fine reaction save from Gianluigi Buffon. However, the game was brought to life just eight minutes later as Tevez opened the scoring, powering past a pair of Parma defenders before slotting the ball home with a precise near-post finish.

That strike moved the former Manchester City man level with Ciro Immobile at the top of the Serie A goalscoring charts, but Tevez soon leapfrogged the Torino forward with his second just after the half-hour mark.

Tevez showcased quick reactions to fire home a rebound after Antonio Mirante had saved from Arturo Vidal's close-range effort.Juve looked to be coasting towards victory and were made to pay for taking their foot off the gas in the second half as Parma drew level in spectacular fashion.

And it was former Juve wing-back Molinaro that pulled Parma back into the game after 62 minutes, finding the net with a fierce volley from the edge of the area that left Buffon with no chance.Parma's hopes of a fightback were dealt a huge blow three minutes as Amauri saw red on his return to Turin for his ill-advised foul on Chiellini.

The numerical disadvantage seemed to galvanise Parma, who were denied a late leveller as Buffon pulled off a fine stop from Molinaro to prevent his old club from taking a share of the spoils.

Catania 2-4 Napoli: Benitez's men propel past rock-bottom hosts

    383278hp2.jpg

Napoli's superb first-half performance saw them past bottom-of-the-table Catania with a 4-2 victory on Wednesday to return to winning ways in style after struggling in recent matches.

Duvan Zapata opened the scoring early on before Jose Callejon - provider for the opener - doubled the scoring with a simple tap-in following a defensive mix-up.

Henrique added a touch of class to proceedings in the 40th minute, thundering in from an absurd angle, before Zapata quickly added his second of the night as the hosts' defence and confidence crumbled.

The Sicilians plucked a goal back via Fabian Monzon eight minutes after the break before defender Norbert Gyomber headed in with quarter of an hour left on the clock, but Napoli held firm for the away triumph.

The win keeps Rafa Benitez's men six point behind second-placed Roma in Serie A, while Catania remain rooted to the foot of the Italian top flight with just eight games left in the season.

Star striker Gonzalo Higuain was rested for the visitors, with Zapata starting in his place, as the Partenopei searched for a return to form after a Europa League exit and weekend loss to fourth-place Fiorentina had left them out of form and at risk of their season derailing.

Napoli started with more possession and Callejon's cross for Lorenzo Insigne ended with the Italy international testing Mariano Andujar - on loan at Rossazzurri from the Stadio San Paolo - in the opening minutes.

It took 17 minutes for the visitors to put the ball in the back of the net when Callejon's swift, low cross was met by the unmarked Zapata at the back post to score the opener.

The home team reacted excellently, though: Monzon cut inside and smashed the ball against the crossbar from inside the box, but Keko's acrobatic attempt flew sideways and Gino Peruzzi's header at close range was tame enough for Pepe Reina to hold on to.

But Rolando Maran's side stitched themselves up for the second goal as Callejon beat the offside trap, watched as the goalkeeper collided with team-mate Nicola Legrottaglie then the ex-Real Madrid man rolled the ball into the net.

Barely 90 seconds later, with the half-hour mark looming, Barrientos inexplicably skied his shot from seven yards out and his team remained two goals behind as their hopes of a result were fast fading.

Napoli eased off the pressure until a few minutes before half-time when Henrique struck brilliantly from a tight angle, lobbing over Andujar then dipping into the top corner for his debut goal for Napoli.

Three minutes later Zapata was threaded into the box, took a second to compose himself and then curled calmly past the Catania goalkeeper to celebrate his second of the night at the Stadio Angelo Massimino.

Maran's men came out after half-time looking a different team and quickly pulled a goal back as a Jaroslav Plasil shot - saved by Reina - fell straight to the feet of Monzon who converted to restore a smidgen of pride to the battered Catania.

The head of steam evaporated after 20 minutes though and Napoli remembered how to play football again, keeping possession from the frustrated hosts in between firing hopeful and half-hearted shots on the Rossazzurri goal.

With 15 minutes to go, however, Catania's Gyomber rose higher than his marker to propel home with his forehead and set up a slightly nervy finale for the Partenopei.

The hosts valiantly pushed for more goals late in the game but were unable to fashion any more clear-cut chances, meaning Napoli could coast to their first competitive victory away to Catania at the 13th attempt.

Barcelona 3-0 Celta: Neymar & Messi ease Catalans to post-Clasico victory

    383236hp2.jpg

Neymar bagged a double in Barcelona's simple 3-0 victory over Celta on Wednesday, but it was overshadowed by goalkeeper Victor Valdes' potentially season-ending injury.

The Spain goalkeeper is set to leave the club at the end of the season and, if the injury to his right knee - sustained while making a simple save - proves serious, he may have played his last game in a Barcelona shirt.

There was a further worry for coach Gerardo Martino when Andres Iniesta was withdrawn at half-time as a precaution with a niggling thigh problem.

Yet, three days after Sunday's epic Clasico victory, a routine win at Camp Nou at least allowed Barca to apply further pressure to La Liga title rivals Atletico and Real Madrid.

Two goals from Neymar and one from Lionel Messi proved enough to see off a Celta side coached by Barca legend Luis Enrique.

The visitors threatened sporadically, most notably just after half-time when Valdes' replacement Jose Pinto made an excellent double save to deny Augusto Fernandez and Santi Mina.

Celta were already two down by that stage, however, Neymar having finished off a trademark flowing move from Barca with a simple tap-in, before Messi ran on to Iniesta's pass and beat goalkeeper Yoel for his 22nd league goal of the season.

Neymar, who had come in for criticism following his performance against Real, added his second and Barcelona's third in the 67th minute, allowing the Catalan giants to celebrate their 1,000th La Liga match at Camp Nou in style.

Neymar's opener came inside six minutes as he tapped into an empty net after incisive approach play involving Iniesta, Messi and Alexis Sanchez.

The Brazilian ought to have doubled his tally nine minutes later, firing into the side netting from a tight angle after being picked out by Messi, who was then denied by Yoel after breaking in behind the Celta backline once again.

The hosts suffered a setback midway through the half when Valdes had to be carried off on a stretcher.

Adriano was penalised for handball close to the edge of the area and, after appearing to originally award a penalty, referee Miguel Ayza gave a free kick, from which the keeper fell awkwardly on his right knee while making a routine save.

Despite a lengthy stoppage, Barca's rhythm was not disrupted as Messi doubled the advantage on the half-hour, latching on to Iniesta's pinpoint pass before rounding Yoel and slotting in.

Seven minutes into the second half, Pinto made a superb double stop, first keeping out Fernandez's close-range prod before jumping to his feet to parry away Mina's powerful rebound.

Neymar then put the result beyond doubt, picking up Sanchez's raking pass before firing beyond Yoel low into the bottom right-hand corner.

Sanchez shot wide 18 minutes from time after being picked out by substitute Pedro but it mattered little as Barca comfortably saw out the victory.

Sevilla 2-1 Real Madrid: Two Bacca strikes down Blancos

    383346hp2.jpg

Real Madrid suffered another blow in the title race, falling to consecutive defeats as Carlos Bacca's double saw them lose 2-1 to Sevilla at Wednesday.

The Blancos' controversial 4-3 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday saw them overtaken by Atletico Madrid at the table's summit - subsequently reigniting the Catalans' own challenge in what is shaping up to be one of the best Spanish title races in recent years.

But Ancelotti's side endured more disappointment in Andalusia on Wednesday, with a second reverse in the space of a few days.

Cristiano Ronaldo's 14th-minute free kick gave them a good start and they looked rampant at one stage, with Karim Benzema in particular threatening.

However, they were made to rue their misses as Carlos Bacca leveled a few moments later.

The visitors enjoyed far more of the ball than Sevilla in the second half, but Bacca's contribution was decisive, as he netted a second with 18 minutes to go to give ths hosts the points.

Former Sevilla defender Sergio Ramos and Angel Di Maria missed the trip to Andalusia due to their respective suspensions and the latter's replacement - Asier Illarramendi - played a crucial role in the first minute.

Vicente Iborra knocked Ivan Rakitic's free kick delivery back across goal and Federico Fazio looked destined to nod in, but Illarramendi hooked the ball away.

The opening stages continued in a similarly breathless fashion and Benzema spurned two big chances - first slotting Dani Carvajal's cut-back just wide, before heading Ronaldo's free kick off target.

However, the Ballon d'Or winner's next set piece provided the breakthrough.

After earning a free kick just outside the Sevilla area, Ronaldo's effort deflected off the arm of Bacca and sailed past the helpless Beto for a 14th-minute lead.

The home side hit back five minutes later, though, as Bacca latched on to Jose Antonio Reyes' through-ball and coolly poked the ball past Diego Lopez.

Ronaldo almost doubled his tally and restored the Madrid advantage in the 43rd minute, but his close-range looping effort struck the post, before Nico Pareja hacked clear off the line.

The match appeared to lack flow in the second period, but that seemed to suit the visitors more as they dominated proceedings against Unai Emery's tiring Sevilla.

However, Real struggled to create clear-cut scoring chances and their insistence on crossing into the area played right into the hands of their hosts, with Federico Fazio continually heading clear.

And, despite Real's domination, Sevilla forged ahead in the 72nd minute. Rakitic produced a brilliant first touch to evade Pepe before racing down the left flank and sliding a pass through to Bacca, who confidently slotted through Lopez's legs.

Ancelotti’s men desperately pressed for a late way back, but their efforts went without reward as Sevilla held on for sixth straight La Liga win, leaving Real Madrid three points behind leaders Atletico at the top.

Arsenal need a 'miracle' to win title, says Campbell

    382895_heroa.jpg

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell believes that it would take "a miracle" for the Gunners to win the Premier League this season.

Arsene Wenger's men followed up their 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea with a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea City on Tuesday, a result that leaves them six points adrift of the leaders.

A return of just eight points from seven matches has seen Arsenal slip to the periphery of the title race, while even a top-four finish is now under threat as a result of Everton's four-match winning streak, and Campbell feels that the defeat to the Blues was the hammer blow to their hopes.

"If that result was different, they could still be in the race. I think that result puts them definitely out of the race," he told Perform, speaking after the release of his book, 'Sol Campbell - the Authorised Biography'.

"A miracle has to happen [for Arsenal to win the league], for the other teams to lose games, for them to win games, for it to all change around.

"Mathematically it's still there [but] the whole momentum of them trying to get back into winning the Premier League has definitely been dented and I think it could be gone now."

Campbell, who lifted two Premier League titles and three FA Cups during his time with Arsenal, believes that Wenger will have been badly affected by the recent dip in form and says that the cup must now be a priority for his former club.

"I think he will be definitely hurt," he remarked of the long-serving manager. "It's a special time when you get 1,000 games [at the same club] and you always want to end in a happy way or have a good result. Obviously that didn't happen so I'm very, very disappointed and he'll be deeply hurt.

"I think he'd like to end with a win under his belt this season.

"Definitely the FA Cup is the only thing to really, really go for and they can't miss that chance because it's a special cup and I hope the players treat it as a special cup and respect the team they're playing against [Wigan] because that's the beauty of the cup; if you disrespect it, it can really turn around."

Chelsea take first steps to sign Costa

    379141_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have taken the first steps to making Diego Costa their headline summer signing, Goal understands.

The Premier League leaders are ready to pay upwards of €36 million for the Atletico Madrid striker.

Intermediaries representing Chelsea have already held meetings with the Costa camp and further discussions are expected in the next week.

The west Londoners are keen to tie up the deal before the end of the season and ahead of Costa departing for the World Cup, where he is expected to be an integral member of the Spain squad trying to defending their 2010 crown.

Costa has emerged as Chelsea's top centre-forward target following a stellar campaign for Champions League quarter-finalists and La Liga title challengers Atletico.

The 25-year-old has scored 31 times in 41 matches this season and his 23-goal league haul is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo (26).

Chelsea were keen to trigger the Brazil-born forward's release clause in January, when he was also being closely monitored by rivals Arsenal, but the player did not want to leave in mid-season.

The buy-out figure was understood to be €36m in January, although there are well-sourced rumours that a slightly higher sum will need to be paid to capture the player in the summer window.

Arsenal have subsequently dropped their interest in Costa following lukewarm scouting reports, leaving Chelsea in pole position to capture the prolific striker.

Jose Mourinho has made no attempt to hide his desire to recruit a blue chip centre forward amid doubts over the futures of all three of the Blues' senior front men - Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba. At least two of the trio are expected to leave in the summer, while Romelu Lukaku will hold talks with Chelsea chiefs when he returns from his season-long loan at Everton.

As reported by Goal, Atletico Madrid lead the chase for Torres and there is also interest in the Spaniard from Inter, Tottenham and Galatasaray. A growing possibility is that Torres could leave on a season-long loan to free up space in Chelsea's attack and on their wage bill.

Ba's representatives have already begun speaking to interested parties, while current first choice Eto'o, 33, is out of contract in the summer.

Vidal: I'm staying at Juventus to win the Champions League

    382382_heroa.jpg

Arturo Vidal has revealed he will stay at Juventus in order to fulfil his promise of delivering the Champions League trophy to Turin.

The 26-year-old has been in superb form for the Bianconeri this season, scoring 18 times in all competitions for the Italian champions, and speculation has mounted that both Barcelona and Real Madrid have identified the Chilean as a priority transfer target this summer.

Vidal, however, says he is happy to ignore the "sirens" calling him from Spain as he is determined to win Europe's top prize with Antonio Conte's side.

"I don't listen to the sirens in Spain, and my family is happy in Turin. I've repeated it several times: I'm happy here," he told FourFourTwo.

"I'm staying at Juventus because president Andrea Agnelli has asked me for the Champions League."

Juve are closing in on their third-straight Serie A title and are in the quarter-finals of the Europa League after suffering a disappointing group-stage exit in this season's Champions League.

'Ronaldo will break all records' - Santillana

    382332_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid striker Carlos Santillana believes Cristiano Ronaldo will eventually become the club's greatest ever goalscorer.

The Portugal sensation recently surpassed Ferenc Puskas on the all-time scorers list for los Blancos and is now 46 goals short of former Spain international Santillana's tally of 289, having scored 42 goals in all competitions to date this season.

While iconic striker Raul remains the club's record scorer with 323, Santillana is fully convinced Ronaldo will surpass his tally as he and Lionel Messi continue to set a new standard with their "crazy" performances on the pitch.

"Cristiano Ronaldo can reach them all. It's normal [for him]. At my time it was unthinkable for a player to hit 50 goals in a season," he told Goal.

"What Messi and Ronaldo are doing is crazy. You have to enjoy it.

"Ronaldo will catch them all - first me, but then [Alfredo] Di Stefano, Raul, everyone. Madrid will benefit, with the goals, the points, the knockout games... He will break all records, I'm convinced."

Question marks remain over whether Ronaldo can be considered the greatest player in Madrid's illustrious history, but Santillana believes it is too difficult to compare the modern game with the past eras of the likes of Di Stefano.

"Is Ronaldo better than Di Stefano, when he scored more goals than him? You cannot say. You can't just use goals to compare players," he said.

"Di Stefano was the best in his time, Ronaldo and Messi are the best in theirs.

"You have to look at the pitches we played on in my time, with rain, mud, marks, divets. In the European Cup there are many more games [now], in the past it was only the winners of the leagues... There are many things to consider."

    Sagna snubbed Inter, reveals Thohir

    367033_heroa.jpg

Inter president Erick Thohir has confirmed that Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna has rejected a move to the Italian giants.

Sagna is out of contract in the summer and it has been revealed that the Gunners had offered the France international a new two-year deal worth £75,000 a week.

Serie A side Inter were hopeful of trumping Arsenal and convincing the defender to leave the Emirates Stadium for San Siro although the club's owner has now revealed that he will be staying in the Premier League.

Thohir told reporters: "Sagna decided to stay in the Premier League. But it will be necessary to strengthen that area of the field. About Evra we did not have any contact."

The Indonesian businessman claimed on Tuesday that Inter were interested in the likes of Edin Dzeko and Fernando Torres and he has again reiterated that it is that calibre of player that the Nerazzurri are looking to attract.

He added: "The media reported the names of these players and I've read about this. Surely the club need a player of this level."

As for Sagna, Arsene Wenger will be hopeful that the club can now convince the Frenchman to stay put although the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City have been linked with the 31-year-old in recent days.

Martinez savours 'special flavour' as Porto end Benfica's unbeaten run

    382915_heroa.jpg

Porto striker Jackson Martinez said there was a "special flavour" to enjoy after his goal brought Benfica's long unbeaten run to an end.

The Colombia interntional rose highest to power home a header in the first half of his side's Taca de Portugal
semi-final first-leg on Wednesday as Porto stole the bragging rights in the latest Portuguese Classico.

Benfica had not lost a game since their Champions League defeat to Olympiakos during the group stage, and with Portugal's giants set to face each other in the league, league cup and second leg of the semi-final - as well as a possible meeting in the Europa League last four - Martinez knows the importance of the result.

"We know Benfica are very strong. We had to begin decisively and put into practice what we had been working on," he told Sport TV. "We're all doing a great job, the coach above all.

"Benfica did their bit. but we played a great game. We fought, we ran and we helped each other. When it's like this, the victory has a special flavour.

"Now we have to think about the next game. The 1-0 gives us an advantage but we have to prepare for the second game as well."

Porto face CD Nacional on Sunday before their Europa League encounter with Sevilla next week, with the second leg of the cup clash set for April 15.

Alonso: Real Madrid can't slip up

    383615_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso feels that every La Liga fixture is now a must-win game if his side are to win the title.

Real's championship challenge has suffered two setbacks in the space of a few days, after they went down 4-3 against Barcelona in Sunday's Clasico before a 2-1 loss to Sevilla on Wednesday.

The defeats leave them third in the table - two points off Barca and three away from leaders Atletico. And if Real are to clinch the title, Alonso says that they cannot afford anymore slip-ups.

"The margin of error is minimal. We must win all our remaining games," he said.
"We wanted to forget [the Barcelona defeat] and come here [to Sevilla] and win but sometimes we haven't been on at our best level."Our last two games have been negatives and little else. We have had many chances but it wasn’t to be. We still have to believe."

Real can bounce back on Saturday at the Bernabeu when they face Rayo Vallecano.

'Bayern have secured a golden future' - Heynckes

    382941_heroa.jpg

Former Bayern Munich head coach Jupp Heynckes thinks the club have secured "a golden future" and will dominate German football for years to come.

Bayern claimed an historic treble last season under Heynckes before he was replaced by Pep Guardiola, who has gone on to seal the Bundesliga title in record time, with Tuesday's 3-1 win over Hertha Berlin securing their crown.

Heynckes believes the Bavarians have moved well beyond the reach of their nearest domestic counterparts and will prove untouchable for some time under the "excellent" Guardiola.

"They have the best squad in Europe, so also the world," he told Kicker.

"I cannot see competition far and wide in the Bundesliga. They have secured a golden future.

"[After 2012] we went in new directions and pledged to absolute top performers: Dante, [Mario] Mandzukic, [Javi] Martinez, [Claudio] Pizarro, [Xherdan] Shaqiri and [Tom] Starke. Two outstanding footballers were then added in [Mario] Gotze and Thiago, and an excellent coach like Guardiola."

Switzerland boss Ottmar Hitzfeld, who coached Bayern in two spells in the late 1990s and the 2007-08 season, believes the current Bayern squad is the strongest ever - but admits the Bundesliga has now lost some of its appeal as a competition.

"Munich has pretty much always occupied the top spots with 11, 12 top players, but never 17 or 18," he said.

"The distance between the giants and the rest of the league is too big. The Bundesliga is losing some of its charm."
