Guingamp 3-1 Monaco (AET): Ligue 1 strugglers run Ranieri's side ragged to reach Coupe de France final

    391742hp2.jpg

Monaco were on the wrong end of a shock on Wednesday as Guingamp won 3-1 to book a place in the Coupe de France final.

Claudio Ranieri's men were strong favourites to progress to the Stade de France showpiece in their last-four meeting with a side who are just five points above the relegation zone in the league.

But the principality club were completely outplayed by their hosts, who deservedly progressed after the additional period to set up a final with Brittany rivals Rennes, whom they defeated in the 2009 decider.

Mustapha Yatabare gave Guingamp the lead early on, before Dimitar Berbatov equalised for Monaco late in the first half.

Ranieri's side then held on for extra-time despite struggling to cope with determined Guingamp's pressure.

However, the five-time champions tired in the additional 30 minutes, with a strike from substitute Fatih Atik and a second from Yatabare sealing a famous victory for the hosts.

Guingamp took the lead after just six minutes as Yatabare beat goalkeeper Sergio Romero to a Steven Langil free-kick to slot home.

Monaco struggled to find a way back into a first half of few chances, but Ranieri's side did level matters nine minutes before half-time when Berbatov struck.

The Bulgarian finished off a sweeping move, his close-range effort deflecting past Mamadou Samassa and into the net.

The visitors were, though, unable to take full control of the game and Guingamp were unfortunate not to find the winner in normal time, Claudio Beauvue seeing a header cleared off the line before Ladislas Douniama's fierce long-range drive was tipped on to the post by Romero six minutes from the end.

Guingamp's relentless pressure continued in extra-time, with Yatabare flashing an excellent long-range volley narrowly wide of the post.

And their dominance finally told in the second additional period when substitute Atik's 112th-minute volley from Thibault Giresse's cross proved too hot for Romero to handle.

Yatabare then made sure of Guingamp's place in the showpiece five minutes later when he finished off a sweeping counterattack with another fine volley into the bottom corner.

Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid: Brilliant Bale breakaway heaps more misery on Martino's men

    391670hp2.jpg

Gareth Bale scored a stunning solo goal to earn Real Madrid a dramatic 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday night.

After Angel Di Maria's first-half opener was cancelled out by Marc Bartra, the Wales international stormed down the left wing - running half the length of the pitch before poking the ball past Blaugrana goalkeeper Jose Pinto with just five minutes to play.

Bale's outstanding run - which started close to the touchline - saw him leave Bartra for dead with his pace, before he produced a composed finish to cap an outstanding performance, as Madrid won the trophy for a 19th time.

Neymar, who struggled throughout the 228th edition of the famous derby, then hit the post with two minutes left as Barcelona fell to a defeat that signals the end to a disastrous seven days for the Catalan giants and their under-fire coach Gerardo Martino.

First, they were knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals, with Atletico Madrid's 1-0 second-leg win sealing a 2-1 aggregate triumph last Wednesday, before suffering a 1-0 loss at Granada on Saturday that appeared to end their Liga title defence.

Their latest setback means that they are now likely to finish without a major piece of silverware for the first season since 2007-08, one in which then coach Frank Rijkaard was sacked.

For Madrid, the victory marks Carlo Ancelotti's first trophy in charge of the club and he will be hoping to add to that with success in both La Liga and the Champions League.

As expected, Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo was absent as he continues to battle knee and thigh problems, but Sergio Ramos recovered from a neck injury to start for Ancelotti's side.

Barcelona coach Martino had hinted that Carles Puyol could return from a knee injury in the build-up, but he left the captain on the bench, as fellow centre-back Bartra returned from a hamstring strain.

They could have done with Puyol's experience in the early stages, as Madrid made a fast start, with Bale flashing an early effort past the right-hand post.

The tension was predictably high - Isco was booked within three minutes for a challenge on Neymar - and Los Blancos continued to pour forward, with Bale's second shot in as many minutes going behind for a corner.

Di Maria, so damaging in the last meeting between the sides, then broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, finishing with aplomb following a quick counterattacking move that involved Isco, Bale and Karim Benzema.

The Argentine fired an angled left-footed effort through the legs of Jordi Alba and at Barcelona shot-stopper Pinto, who found the strike too hot to handle and was unable to stop the ball from creeping into the bottom corner.

Barcelona's first real chance came after Pepe and Neymar had clashed, and were booked, as Alba nodded straight at Madrid's Iker Casillas, and the defender then got back to superbly block Isco’s effort after Bale's clever pass.

Lionel Messi shot wide from 20 yards just before the break - in which Adriano replaced Alba - but Barca were still sluggish when play resumed, as Bale shot into the side netting before firing over six minutes later.

The introduction of Pedro, for the ineffective Cesc Fabregas, did little to stem the flow as a Benzema strike was touched onto the outside of the post by Pinto, before Bale had a goal correctly disallowed for offside after the goalkeeper had charged off his line from a corner.

Pinto was ahead of play, meaning just one defender was between Bale and the goal, and less than 60 seconds later the ball was in the back of Madrid's net, with the effort counting on this occasion.

Bartra was responsible, with the young defender losing his marker, Pepe, and rising highest to head Xavi's 68th-minute corner into the net. It was a perfectly placed header, but parity lasted just 17 minutes.

When Luka Modric hit the outside of the post, the game had seemed destined for extra-time but Bale was on hand to steal the show.

The Welshman was initially impeded by Bartra but showcased his speed to storm ahead of his marker and from there the defender, reluctant to foul the winger, could only watch on as Pinto was beaten with a toe-poked finish.

There was still time for Barca to push for a leveller, but Neymar lacked the necessary composure when presented with a chance right at the end, firing onto the post after he had got in behind the Madrid defence, as Madrid celebrated a famous win.

Manchester City 2-2 Sunderland: City title hopes in the balance despite Nasri equaliser

    391694hp2.jpg

Manchester City's quest to keep pace with Premier League leaders Liverpool faltered on Wednesday as they let an early lead slip but recovered to a 2-2 draw with Sunderland.

Fernandinho struck in the second minute, capitalising on a disastrous Lee Cattermole error, but the relegation-threatened visitors battled back superbly and deserved their second-half equaliser.

Connor Wickham got it, pouncing on the chance to volley home when Aleksandar Kolarov was out of position, and the striker then stole a second on the break in the 83rd minute, though Samir Nasri restored some pride with a goal at the death.

It came largely thanks to a mistake from Vito Mannone and the City midfielder would have wrapped up all three points but for a dreadful miss just moments later.

The result puts Gus Poyet's side back to within six points of safety, with one game still in hand, but City's title bid is left on the ropes, behind the Reds by the same margin even with one extra match to play.

City needed a response after their defeat on Merseyside and it came quickly, with two of Manuel Pellegrini's five additions to the starting XI heavily involved in the build-up as the home side went ahead almost immediately.

Sergio Aguero slid the ball to Alvaro Negredo, whose dummy on the edge of the penalty area completely fooled defender Wes Brown – scorer of the own goal that led to his side's 1-0 defeat against Everton on Saturday – and Fernandinho made no mistake in squeezing his strike between Mannone and the right-hand post.

Former Manchester United defender John O'Shea rose well to meet an Adam Johnson free kick from the right flank four minutes later but the Irishman wasted the opportunity by heading harmlessly wide of the target before nodding another effort narrowly over the crossbar.

City could have doubled their advantage when Fernandinho scooped a volley over the crossbar 11 minutes in but Sunderland were pressing well and might well have drawn level eight minutes later had Fabio Borini been less selfish and squared to a team-mate rather than go for goal himself from a narrow angle.

Despite the early breakthrough, City were struggling to impose themselves on their lowly opponents. Aguero was lucky to avoid serious injury following a dangerous tackle from Brown and the Argentine had calls for a penalty waved away before the break after going down under the challenge of O'Shea.

Substitute Stevan Jovetic tried to slot the ball beyond Mannone shortly after the hour mark but his effort was tame and comfortably collected by the Italian.

Joe Hart had to make himself big at the other end after 72 minutes when Jack Colback found himself through one-on-one but Wickham then turned the game on its head as he tapped home Giaccherini's cross.

Wickham then fired an unstoppable effort into the bottom right-hand corner a few minutes later to deal City's title hopes a second huge blow in the space of four days.

However, Nasri's late shot prompted the error from Mannone to earn City a point before the Frenchman blasted over the crossbar soon afterwards in a golden chance to take all the spoils.

Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace: Toffees' top-four push takes serious blow

    391688hp2.jpg

Everton's hopes of holding onto fourth place in the Premier League took a huge blow as Crystal Palace ran out 3-2 winers at Goodison Park.

Tony Pulis's men took the lead through Jason Puncheon midway through the first half before Scott Dann netted from a corner just after the break to give them total control of the game.

Steven Naismith tapped into an empty net on the hour to give the Toffees some hope of maintaining their lead over Arsenal but Cameron Jerome's strike put them down and out, while giving the Eagles their fourth consecutive league win despite a late consolation for Kevin Mirallas.

The hosts - who made three changes as part of an attacking line-up, with Ross Barkley, Mirallas and Aiden McGeady all starting - forced the pace from the off, with Gareth Barry stooping to head over from a Leighton Baines corner in the first minute.

Palace, though, soaked up Everton's early pressure and looked dangerous on the break themselves.

They went closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening stages when, after 20 minutes, Jerome found space unmarked in the penalty area but his header from Joe Ledley's cross flashed narrowly over the crossbar - although the Palace striker looked to be in an offside position.

The visitors made their pressure count after 23 minutes when Tim Howard could only parry Yannick Bolasie's right-wing cross. The ball fell to Puncheon, who finished neatly from 10 yards for his fourth goal in the last three games.

It was nearly 2-0 before the interval when a breakaway saw Bolasie hit the base of the post from 30 yards and an unbalanced Jerome could only put the rebound wide. Romelu Lukaku then diverted a Barkley cut-back on goal but Julian Speroni dived smartly to push the ball wide.

Ledley forced a fine save from Howard two minutes into the second half but, from the resulting corner, defender Dann's powerful downward header stunned Goodison Park as it beat the unsighted goalkeeper to double Palace's lead.

McGeady almost responded immediately when his fierce 30-yard strike bent narrowly wide of Speroni's left-hand post.

Half-time substitute Naismith did pull Everton back into the game when he converted from close range after Baines had headed a deep Mirallas cross into his path after 61 minutes.

Mirallas then nearly equalised when he met a dipping cross from Baines at the back post but, with 17 minutes left, Puncheon was again the architect, showing superb close control on the edge of the box before sliding the ball into Jerome, who curled it into the bottom corner.

Everton refused to lay down even then and, with four minutes to go, Barkley's through-ball was deflected into the path of Mirallas, who rounded Speroni and fired home.

Despite another late chance for the Belgian forward, who mis-kicked with the goal at his mercy, Everton could not find a way back as Palace hung on to effectively end any lingering fears of relegation and simultaneously blow the race for fourth place in the Premier League wide open.

Bayern Munich 5-1 Kaiserslautern: Bavarians set up DFB-Pokal final showdown with Dortmund

    391647hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich kept hopes of a second straight treble intact by reaching the final of the DFB-Pokal with a 5-1 victory over Kaiserslautern.

Pep Guardiola's men remain on track to emulate their achievements of last season, when the Bavarians won the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal, following a comfortable semi-final triumph at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger put Bayern, who have already been crowned Bundesliga champions and won the Club World Cup in December, ahead midway through the first half with a fine headed effort.

Toni Kroos netted shortly after to put Bayern in complete command before a second-half penalty from Thomas Muller eased any nerves.

Simon Koller did pull one back for second-tier outfit Kaiserslautern, but that proved to be little more than a consolation as Bayern cruised to victory, Mario Mandzukic and Mario Gotze both scoring late on to set up a mouth-watering showpiece with Borussia Dortmund in Berlin next month.

Muller, who replaced Gotze in the Bayern starting XI following last weekend's 3-0 home defeat to Dortmund, came close to opening the scoring after eight minutes as his header from Schweinsteiger's clever cross was deflected against the crossbar.

The hosts laboured for much of the opening period against a determined Kaiserslautern defence, but Guardiola's men made the breakthrough in the 23rd minute when Schweinsteiger powered home a magnificent downward header from Arjen Robben's pinpoint corner.

And that lead was doubled nine minutes later, Kroos meeting Robben's lay-off on the edge of the area with an exquisite finish that curled past Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Tobias Sippel and into the bottom corner.

Any hopes of a Kaiserslautern revival were extinguished just five minutes into the second half as Muller rolled the ball home from the spot after Chris Lowe had tripped Robben inside the area.

Bayern refused to take their foot off the gas, though, and would have added a fourth had Franck Ribery not missed the target when presented with an empty net from Muller's pull-back.

The visitors then reduced the deficit on the hour mark, striker Zoller glancing Florian Dick's right-wing cross beyond Bayern goalkeeper Lukas Raeder.

But Bayern were far from finished and re-emphasised their dominance 13 minutes from time when Mandzukic confidently slotted home after latching on to substitute Gotze's through-ball.

Gotze then rounded off another wonderful Bayern showing in injury time, combining effortlessly with Ribery before coolly finishing from point-blank range.

Moyes steps up Manchester United overhaul with Portugal scouting trip

    387380_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss David Moyes flew to Lisbon on Wednesday to observe the Portuguese Classico between Benfica and Porto.

His attendance at the semi-final of the Taca de Portugal offered an opportunity to personally assess several players being monitored by the Red Devils' scouting department.

Porto's leading scorer Jackson Martinez, their France international centre back Eliquiam Mangala and Benfica central defender Ezequiel Garay have all been included on United's long list of potential reinforcements for next season.

All three featured in the second-leg tie, which Benfica won 3-1, as the Scot watched from an Estadio da Luz box.

Moyes has often laid the blame for United's underperformance in his first campaign as boss on the group of players he inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Though his own future remains far from secure as the Old Trafford hierarchy assess alternative coaching options, he has been permitted to continue working on plans for an unprecedented overhaul of that squad.

In addition to January's club-record acquisition of Juan Mata from Chelsea, Moyes has proposed bringing in as many as six more players in the peak period of their careers – over the age of 25, with the quality and desire to accumulate trophies. His scouts have been looking for a striker and at least two new midfielders and defenders.

Martinez, Mangala and Garay are all expected to leave Portuguese football this summer as Porto and Benfica follow long-established strategies of raising revenue from their principal talents.

Moyes is well know for his diligence in watching potential signings in person before requesting a transfer spend from his employers.
