Rodgers: Sterling is the best young player in Europe

    393278_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hailed Raheem Sterling as "the best young player in European football" after the winger scored twice in the Reds' 3-2 win at Norwich City on Sunday.

The visitors moved five points clear at the summit of the Premier League table with the victory, which was their 11th win in a row and takes them closer to a first title in 24 years.

Sterling, 19, scored a stunning opener from 25 yards in the fourth minute and added the third in the 62nd with a deflected strike, while the England international also set up Luis Suarez's 30th league goal of the campaign in between.

"I think he's arguably the best young player in European football at the moment," Rodgers told reporters.

"He should win Young Player of the Year, which, for me, should be under 21. I'm really pleased with his maturity. He puts an awful lot of time into his work.

"We have tried to play him in different positions to improve his football intelligence. He started at the tip of the diamond today and moved to the right side of a front three.

"He's a really humble kid and he's got that in-built brain and belief."

Liverpool were boosted by Chelsea's shock home defeat to Sunderland on Saturday and will be guaranteed the title if they take seven points from their remaining matches against the Blues, Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

Asked about the pressure of the title challenge, Rodgers replied: "I enjoy it. It's brilliant. I've worked for a long time as a young coach. By the time I arrived in management, I'd been an apprentice for 15 years. My aim as a coach is to make players better and the consequence of that will be winning.

"To live with expectancy is all part of being at a huge club like Liverpool and it's something I'm very privileged to do. I know the players are giving me everything - it's 11 wins on the spin now and that's an incredible achievement."

    Giroud: I'm happy at Arsenal

    391249_heroa.jpg

Olivier Giroud insists he is happy at Arsenal and has no intention of leaving the club this summer.

Reports in March had linked the 27-year-old with a return to France after he lost his place in the side to Yaya Sanogo.

"Of course I'll stay, I'm happy here in London," Giroud told Telefoot.

"I have a contract until 2016 and that is what I want. You should not listen to the media."

Arsenal ended their four-game run without a win in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over West Ham on Tuesday and Arsene Wenger's side are now one point ahead of Everton in the race for fourth place.

"It's better now [at Arsenal]. We are looking for the last four games with much more serenity," Giroud said.

"The main objective is to finish fourth. It's been 17 years that the team qualifies for the Champions League, I don't want to be in the generation that misses it. Champions League is vital for the club.

"The FA Cup final is also an important trophy for the fans, they have been waiting for a trophy for a long time."

Arsenal to swoop for Southampton starlet Slattery

    389933_heroa.jpg

Arsenal are planning a swoop for Southampton's teenage midfielder Callum Slattery, the latest St Mary's youngster tipped for success.

The Gunners sent chief scout Steve Rowley to run the rule over Slattery at a recent youth game and are hoping to speak to the youngster.

The Under-16 player, who features regularly in youth games at older age levels, has already been offered a professional contract at St Mary's.

But the highly rated youngster is yet to make a decision regarding his future and the Gunners are now poised to raid one of the top academies in English football which has nurtured the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Saints are desperate to keep Slattery, who will have to decide whether to take his chances of eventually making the first team at Arsenal or staying put on the south coast and emulating the likes of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and Callum Chambers.

The teenager would cost Arsenal a fee at a tribunal should he decide to leave St Mary's.

But the overall cost could still represent a bargain for the north Londoners if Slattery progresses to the level of a number of recent Southampton youth products.

    Madrid boosted by Ronaldo return

    390634_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have been boosted by the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to training ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich.

The 29-year-old missed Wednesday's Copa del Rey final win over Barcelona with a knee injury and looked set to be absent for the first-leg of his side's last four European tie on Wednesday.

However, he could now be available for the clash with Pep Guardiola's side after coming through the first part of Sunday's training session.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti will also be encouraged by the participation of Marcelo, who emerged unscathed from the practice having been sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Copa del Rey hero Gareth Bale was also present following his match-winning heroics in midweek, while defender Sergio Ramos worked alone inside the club's training facility.

The news that Ronaldo will be back for the crunch clash will not only come as a relief to Madrid, with Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitting that he was eager to see the Portuguese face his side.

"When Real Madrid play Bayern Munich, then the whole world will be watching. I always want the best players to be on the pitch," he told TZ.

Real Madrid and Bayern face one another at 20:45CET on Wednesday.

    Reus demands Dortmund momentum

    393206_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus has urged his side to continue their good run of form after securing Champions League qualification.

BVB have little to play for in their remaining three Bundesliga games after their 4-2 win at home to Mainz on Saturday confirmed their spot in the group stages in Europe in 2014-15.Jurgen Klopp's men can fall to third, but while that will not affect anything but their pride, Reus wants Dortmund to build some momentum in their remaining matches.

"We've still got four games left, so it's important we don't let our performance levels drop and keep improving," Reus said."We also want to take the DFB Cup back to Dortmund, so we mustn't rest on our laurels. We have to keep going."

Nuri Sahin was at fault for Mainz's second goal, as his attempt to find Australian goalkeeper Mitch Langerak was intercepted by Shinji Okazaki, but the midfielder says he will not lose any sleep over an innocent mistake."You see bad back-passes all over the world," he said.

"I've seen it a thousand times on TV and now I've experienced it. It's anexperience I didn't necessarily want, but that's football."

End Of The Line? David Moyes set to be sacked

    soc_g_moyes_576x324.jpg

Manchester United have lost patience with David Moyes and are preparing to sack the Scot, club sources have told ESPN FC.

Newspapers including the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail and The Guardian all reported on Monday that the former Everton boss is set to lose his job after the 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park on Sunday.United initially did not deny the reports when contacted by ESPN FC, but later insisted that the manager had "definitely" not been sacked. However, senior officials at the club have said privately that the sacking is “imminent.”

The sources claimed that the club’s owners, the Glazer family, have been contemplating sacking Moyes since the FA Cup defeat to Swansea City on Jan. 5 and have taken a much more active interest in the matter in the wake of Sunday’s performance.

Meetings took place throughout Monday morning over the manager, with several players said to be disillusioned with his leadership.ESPN FC reported last month that Moyes, who was appointed Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor on a six-year contract in the summer, had lost the faith of key boardroom figures and his position was under serious threat.

The doubts increased significantly after a defeat at Everton that not only leaves the club unable to qualify for next season’s Champions League but raised serious questions over the players’ commitment to their manager.

The Telegraph, which broke the news of Ferguson’s retirement last season, reported on Monday: “The 50-year-old’s reign could end before Saturday’s Old Trafford encounter with Norwich City if he chooses to seek assurances over his future, which executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is unlikely to be able to offer.”

The Mail said the Glazers and Woodward believe the players have “stopped trying for their manager” and added: “It is understood that the plan now is to sack Moyes at the end of the season but the situation could now come to a head later on Monday or in the coming days. If the former Everton boss is sacked before the season’s end, club legend Ryan Giggs will be asked to take over team affairs.”

The Guardian, meanwhile, said high-level discussions had taken place as to whether Moyes was the right man to spend the 150 million pounds that is available to be invested into the squad this summer.

Following the match at Everton, Moyes said: “They [the supporters] realise it has been a difficult season. They understand it has not been good. I recognise it has not been good -- it needs to be better. Everybody knows that we are on track to make changes and do some different things. We are rebuilding. We have got things we want to do.”

United will finish the campaign with their lowest-ever Premier League points total, having lost 11 of their 34 games so far.

Torres won't hide against Atletico Madrid, insists Mourinho

    393731_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho insists Fernando Torres won't "hide" against former club Atletico Madrid during Chelsea's Champions League semi-final.

The Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge but is in line to face the Liga leaders in Tuesday's first-leg clash after Samuel Eto'o did not travel with the squad due to a knee injury.

Torres came though the youth ranks at the Vicente Calderon, scoring 91 goals over seven seasons in the first team before joining Liverpool in 2007, but Mourinho is not concerned by his striker's state of mind ahead of the fixture.

"Playing in the Champions League is a big motivation for every player. Everyone wants to play. Those chosen are happy those who aren't, are not," he told reporters.

"I am not saying that Fernando Torres will start, I am saying that he never hides. We feel that every day. He is a real Atletico supporter, I would say a big one. We talk about Spanish football every day.

"He is a professional. I have no doubts that the minutes he will be on the pitch tomorrow he will do everything for Chelsea given the professional that he is."

Mourinho also refuted claims that Atletico Madrid counterpart Diego Simeone is a superior coach to him.

"I don't agree," he said. "It is difficult to compare coaches; in fact it is not fair to do so.

"It is not fair to compare someone with 15 years of experience as a coach to one with less than that. It is something that I don't like to do."

After suffering semi-final defeats to Liverpool during his first spell in charge of Chelsea, Mourinho insists those disappointments do not provide extra motivation.

"I have no unfinished business with Chelsea in in the Champions League," he said. "I did my best. I always do my best. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

"In one semi-final we lost on penalties and in the other we lost because of a goal that wasn't a goal [a reference to a shot from Luis Garcia that was adjudged to have crossed the line], but that's football."

Athletic Bilbao boss Valverde 'flattered' by Barcelona link

    373305_heroa.jpg

Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has admitted that he is "flattered" by speculation linking him with Barcelona.

The current incumbent at Camp Nou, Tata Martino, is under intense pressure, with the Catalans set to finish the season without a trophy after being eliminated from the Champions League, falling four points behind Atletico at the top of La Liga and losing the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid.

Valverde is currently being touted as a potential successor and while the former Blaugrana forward insists that he is not looking to leave San Mames, he is honoured that he is viewed as a potential candidate.

“I’m flattered by the comments,” the 50-year-old is quoted as saying by AS. “On whether it’s negotiable or not, I have a contract with Athletic and I’m comfortable here."

Valverde admitted, though, that he is not in the least bit surprised that Barca are being a viewed as a club in crisis, given he knows full well how great the sense of expectancy is at Camp Nou.

“A week ago Barca were in three races, and now just one," he mused. "And whoever lost the Copa final was going to be in crisis.

"I’ve played at Barca and that’s how it is. Sometimes they win a lot but this year hasn’t gone as expected."
