Moyes to be sacked as Manchester United manager

    388907_heroa.jpg

David Moyes is set to be sacked as manager of Manchester United, Goal understands.

The Glazer family have decided to dismiss the Scot just 11 months after he was appointed Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

A United spokesperson has denied that Moyes has already been sacked but Goal has learned that his departure is "imminent". He is not expected to be in the dugout when United play Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Player-coach Ryan Giggs is expected to be placed in charge of the team until the end of the season, with the other members of the backroom team that Moyes brought with him from Everton - Steve Round, Phil Neville and Jimmy Lumsden - also set to leave the club. A permanent manager will then be appointed at the end of the season.

The Glazers, the Americans who own the club, regarded Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Everton, United's 11th loss in all competitions since the turn of the year, as the final straw in what has been a catastrophic season.

Moyes, who signed a six-year contract last May in the wake of Sir Alex's retirement, is likely to be told the news of his dismissal by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

It can hardly be a coincidence that the Glazers decided to pull the plug immediately after confirmation that United cannot mathematically finish in the top four this season.

The America-based owners have learned from the senior executives based in the UK of the widespread disaffection of senior players and the United hierarchy believe dressing room unrest, coupled with a season of disastrous results, has made Moyes' position untenable.

United are set to become the equal worst defending champions in Premier League history, matching the seventh place finish of Ray Harford’s Blackburn Rovers in 1996. They are also likely to fail to qualify for the Europa League next season.

The United board have stood by Moyes following several disastrous results, most notably the home defeats last month to rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

But the scorelines have been matched by equally deflating performances and the pressure on Moyes has grown due to persistent rumours of discontent in the dressing room.

Robin van Persie, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez and Giggs, who has been marginalised despite his apparently senior role, are all believed to be unhappy with Moyes and the backroom team he brought with him from Everton.

The United matchday fans have remained broadly supportive of Moyes but anger has grown at what they perceive to be a negative style of play and the manager's continual failure to arrest the slump, particularly against high-quality opposition.

:love:Manchester United make Klopp No.1 choice to replace Moyes

    386255_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have made Jurgen Klopp their No.1 target to replace David Moyes at Old Trafford, Goal can reveal.

The Borussia Dortmund manager is United's top choice to take over from the Scot, who is set to be sacked just 11 months after being appointed Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

Goal understands that Klopp's camp has already been sounded out by the United hierarchy. He is believed to have initially held reservations about the post but sources have said the 46-year-old has subsequently had a change of heart and there is growing confidence at Old Trafford that he could be persuaded to move to the Premier League.

Goal has learned that United have already met with Louis van Gaal, who will be a free agent when he steps down as Netherlands coach after the World Cup.

However, the meeting, which is believed to have taken place last week, has prompted strong reservations in the United boardroom about whether Van Gaal's dictatorial management style would get the best out of the players, including the senior core who have been so disaffected under Moyes.

The Scot will be dismissed before Saturday's Premier League clash against Norwich City at Old Trafford, with Ryan Giggs likely to be placed in charge of United until the end of the season. However, the player-coach, 40, is not believed to be a realistic candidate to replace Moyes on a permanent basis due to his lack of managerial experience.

Klopp, who is contracted to Dortmund until 2018, has the greatest appeal to the United hierarchy for transforming the German club into a European powerhouse since taking over six years ago.

Klopp led Dortmund to consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, when they also won the domestic double, and they were the runners-up in last season's Champions League final.

Dortmund have continued to punch above their weight this season, reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League only to be narrowly defeated by Real Madrid. They are also second in the Bundesliga table although a distant second behind recently-crowned champions Bayern Munich.

Klopp has been widely linked with a move to the Premier League in recent years but has remained loyal to the club where he made his name.

United believe that they have the prestige and history to turn Klopp's head and bring him to Old Trafford this summer.

The powerbrokers, led by the Glazer family and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, are willing to hand the new man a staggering transfer kitty of up to £200 million to reshape a squad that has failed so dismally this season.

Manchester City 3-1 West Brom: Silva injury sours comfortable night for hosts

    393937hp2.jpg

Manchester City's Premier League title hopes were given a much-needed boost with a 3-1 win over relegation-threatened West Brom on Monday.

Having been beaten by Liverpool before dropping points at home to Sunderland in a surprise 2-2 draw, City could ill-afford another slip-up at the Etihad Stadium.

While Manuel Pellegrini's men were not always at their fluent best, goals from the Argentinian trio of Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Martin Demichelis secured a welcome victory, leaving City a point adrift of second-placed Chelsea and six behind leaders Liverpool - with a game in hand on both.

David Silva's late withdrawal on a stretcher provided the only concern for City, who made a strong start and took the lead three minutes in when Zabaleta's acrobatic header evaded the attempted clearance of Craig Dawson.

The right-back was quick to react after Ben Foster had parried a shot from Aguero and the striker added a second goal seven minutes later.

Graham Dorrans produced a stunning half-volley to keep the visitors in the game during a frantic opening, but Demichelis restored his side's two-goal lead before the interval.

The win keeps City in with a fighting chance of claiming the title, while West Brom remain two places and three points above the relegation zone having played one game fewer than the three sides immediately beneath them.

City, who brought Silva, Gael Clichy and Edin Dzeko into their starting XI, made an ideal start when Zabaleta followed up Aguero's saved effort to head home and settle any nerves at the Etihad.

Aguero spooned another effort over the bar on only his second start after returning from injury, but soon shook off any rustiness to score his first goal since January, a low shot from outside the area beating Foster as the goalkeeper dived to his left.

West Brom then came close through Stephane Sessegnon's powerful drive before City went from the sublime to the ridiculous and gave their visitors the opportunity to pull a goal back.

A shambolic free-kick routine saw City concede possession and, when West Brom broke, Matej Vydra slipped in Dorrans, who juggled the ball superbly past Clichy and volleyed home.

Despite struggling to find the fluency they had demonstrated early on, City scored again nine minutes before the break.

Demichelis joined countrymen Zabaleta and Aguero in getting on the scoresheet, finding the net from close range after Vincent Kompany had flicked a corner into his path.

Kompany made a fine block to deny Sessegnon before half-time, but the second period provided much less in the way of excitement.

In stark contrast to Wednesday's draw with Sunderland, there was little late drama for City, who appeared comfortable as the game moved towards a conclusion.

However, their evening was soured when Silva was taken off injured with his right leg in a brace following an innocuous challenge with Billy Jones.

Miranda: Why should Atletico fear Mourinho's Chelsea?

    392452_heroa.jpg

Miranda says that he has the utmost respect for Jose Mourinho but can see no reason why Atletico Madrid should fear his Chelsea side.

The Rojiblancos set up their Champions League semi-final showdown with the Blues by overcoming Barcelona in the last eight, while they currently lead La Liga by four points from the Catalans, with just four rounds of the season remaining.

Atletico's remarkable campaign has shocked some pundits but Miranda is not sure why, arguing that Diego Simeone's side have long been a match for anyone and, consequently, will relish going up against Mourinho's Chelsea at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday night.

"Some people seemed too surprised that we overcame Barcelona, as if Atletico had suddenly crept up from nowhere this season," the defender told The Guardian on the eve of the first leg. "I find that a bit odd.

"With all due respect to the great manager Mourinho is, we need to make him feel as uncomfortable as possible. I don't see why we have to be afraid of Chelsea if we didn't fear Real Madrid [when the Portuguese was in charge of Los Blancos between 2010 and 2013].

"They are a great team but so were Barcelona. They are going to have to want the place in the final more than we do."

Miranda feels that Atletico's desire will not be matched, though, explaining that the players realise that the squad that Simeone has assembled could be broken up this summer, with star striker currently being linked with, coincidentally, Chelsea.

"The group knows we could lose players for next season so there is this feeling that we have a pretty special chance in our careers that might not come again," the Brazilian confessed.

"Which is why we play every match as if our lives depended upon it. We owe that to the supporters and to Simeone."

Manchester United confirm David Moyes sacking

    moyesdavidmanchesterunitedapplausebayern_576x324.jpg

Manchester United confirmed on Tuesday that David Moyes has been dismissed as manager.

Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson last summer on a six-year contract, but he has been relieved of his duties after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to former club Everton, which left the club unable to qualify for the Champions League.A statement on the club’s official website read: “Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the club.“The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.”

Ryan Giggs, who had worked as player-coach under Moyes this season, will take temporary charge of the club, but there has been speculation for some time over Moyes’ permanent successor.Recent reports in the English press have suggested that Juergen Klopp has many admirers at Old Trafford, but Borussia Dortmund told ESPN FC on Tuesday morning that there is no prospect he will join United, “even if some people don’t want to believe it.”

United told ESPN FC earlier this month that there was no truth to reports of discussions with Louis van Gaal, who will leave the Netherlands after the World Cup, but Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claimed on Tuesday that the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss was headed to Portugal for talks with co-chairman Joel Glazer.

Former United defender Laurent Blanc, currently in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, has also been linked with the role along with Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone, although the Argentine does not speak English.ESPN FC had reported last month that Moyes had lost the faith of key boardroom figures and his position was under serious threat.

On Monday afternoon, news of the Scot’s impending departure broke, and although United insisted the manager had “definitely” not been sacked, the club did not deny the stories that his exit was imminent.

Following the news, Sean Bones, vice-chair at Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST), told Sky Sports News that he felt the situation had been handled badly, saying: “This has been done without class and dignity. It’s wrong to brief journalists the day before.”United will finish the campaign with their lowest-ever Premier League point total, having lost 11 of their 34 games so far. They have also lost 10 of their 22 games in all competitions in 2014 and are certain to finish outside the top three for the first time since 1990.

Moyes took United to the Champions League quarterfinals, but his reign also included a Capital One Cup semifinal defeat to Sunderland, when United missed four of their penalties in the shootout, and an FA Cup third-round exit to Swansea at Old Trafford.Moyes made two major signings as United manager, bringing in Marouane Fellaini from his former club Everton in September for 27.5 million pounds and Juan Mata from Chelsea in January for a club-record 37.1 million pounds.

There have been reports of unrest among United players, always denied, during his reign but the club, who claimed 89 points to become Premier League champions last year, are enduring their worst season for a quarter of a century.

:(:(:(:(Manchester United fans' choice Jurgen Klopp committed to Borussia Dortmund

    456531985_3128523.jpg

Borussia Dortmund have rubbished rumours linking Juergen Klopp with Manchester United, telling ESPN FC their coach will stay “until 2018 -- no ifs or buts.”

United confirmed that Moyes’ reign had been brought to an end on Tuesday morning, and there has been speculation that Klopp -- who guided Dortmund to last season’s Champions League final -- is among the top candidates for the role. However, on Saturday, in response to claims Barcelona have shown interest, Klopp had dismissed the suggestion he could leave Borussia, and BVB director of communication Sascha Fligge has now ruled out any prospect the 46-year-old could take charge at Old Trafford.

“Juergen Klopp already dismissed rumours linking him to Barcelona on our official homepage on Saturday,” Fligge told ESPN FC.The former FSV Mainz coach extended his contract until 2018 in October and Fligge said there was no possibility he would leave before then.

Before extending his deal, Klopp had been touted as a potential successor to Sir Alex Ferguson, and Fligge added: “We’ve already had this last year, but it’s final, even if some people don’t want to believe it.”Klopp, who guided Dortmund to a fourth consecutive Champions League appearance at the weekend for the first time in the club’s history, had said he was “still a bit in love” with BVB when rejecting the Barca speculation.

Later on Tuesday morning, Klopp told The Guardian: “Man Utd is a great club and I feel very familiar with their wonderful fans, but my commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is not breakable.”
