Adebayor wants 'great man' Sherwood to stay at Tottenham

    400434_heroa.jpg

Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor says he has "great respect" for Tim Sherwood and wants him to stay as head coach.

Sherwood took over from Andre Villas-Boas in December and immediately brought Adebayor back into the fold, and the Togo international has since scored 13 goals in all competitions.

Goal revealed last month that Sherwood will be replaced this summer, with Ajax boss Frank de Boer and Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino among the front-runners for the post.

But Adebayor remains hopeful that the man who showed faith in him will stay at White Hart Lane."Hopefully he stays, but I am not the chairman of the club so I can't tell you anything about that," he told The Tottenham Journal.

"We will see what happens in the future."No matter where he goes, I will always keep him in my heart and I have a huge respect for him - as a manager, as a friend, as an ex-footballer, because he knows what it takes to be a footballer.

"He respects everyone equally, and for me he is a great man and a great manager."

Van Nistelrooy 'surprised' at Netherlands offer

    400420_heroa.jpg

Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed his surprise at Guus Hiddink's offer to become assistant coach with the Netherlands after the World Cup.

With current boss Louis van Gaal set to step down after the tournament in Brazil later this year, Hiddink is due to take over for his second spell in charge of the national team for their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

And Hiddink, who has spent time in charge of Real Madrid and Chelsea, as well as Russia, Australia and South Korea, asked Van Nistelrooy to join him as assistant. The former striker, who scored 35 goals in 70 appearances for his country, admits the offer came as a shock."It was a surprise call from Hiddink," he told Uefa.com. "I wasn't really expecting anything like that, but when a job like that comes by, it's an honour.

"Working with Hiddink, with his experience, for me, starting out as a coach, it's fantastic."Spending two years with him, with the Dutch national team, trying to help players improve - it can't get any better."

Van Nistelrooy then added the contribution he hopes to make to the national setup and highlighted areas he feels he can be of help."I'll be an assistant coach, so I'll be helping everyone, together with Danny Blind (assistant coach)," he added.

"I can use my experiences - how to deal with pressure, how I prepared, how I did things, situations that occurred - but that's general things that I can share with any player."

    Vidal considering knee surgery

    400377_heroa.jpg

Juventus and Chile star Arturo Vidal is considering surgery in a bid to cure a troublesome knee injury ahead of the World Cup.

The midfielder has been carrying the problem in recent weeks and with Juve having little to play for after sealing the Scudetto and being knocked out of the Europa League, Vidal could go under the knife before flying out to Brazil.

"The news is true," Chile's national doctor Giovanni Carcuro is quoted as saying by CalcioNews24. "The way things have unfolded has not been as good as we anticipated."On Tuesday his condition will be assessed once more, then we will make a final decision on what course of action to take.

"The problem is complex as it's a strong aggravation to his knee. It is a meniscal injury. Because of this we cannot make a decision lightly. We have to manage the situation well."His recovery has not been positive and the fact he played for 70 minutes the other day has not helped.

"The World Cup? I am not sure he will be at 100 per cent for the first match, but he is not at risk of missing the tournament."We need to see how the situation develops after the operation."

No bids for Costa, say Atletico

    400358_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid have recieved no offers for talismanic striker Diego Costa, according to club president Enrique Cerezo.

Costa has been in prolific form for Diego Simeone's men this season, firing the side to the top of La Liga as well as a Champions League final date with city rivals Real Madrid.

The Spain frontman's impressive performances and 36-goal tally have led to widespread speculation linking him with a move away from Vicente Calderon, but Cerezo denied that any formal approaches have been made.

"It's not the time to talk about signings," he told the Spanish media. "There are three very important games ahead."Diego Costa was signed when he was 18, almost a child, and nobody guessed what he would be today.

"Chelsea? We don't want to know when these games are so important. We don't want to destabilise the team and we can talk about this later."I can say that there is nothing, not officially, from another club to one of our players. They're not on their way to another team.

"If the question is 'is there a deal for Costa' then we haven't heard anything."

Giggs organises Manchester United get-together as Van Gaal announcement draws closer

    399193_heroa.jpg

Interim Manchester United boss Ryan Giggs organised a special get-together at Carrington on Sunday as the club make preparations to announce Louis van Gaal as the club’s new permanent manager.

As Goal reported in April, Van Gaal has agreed a deal to take charge at Old Trafford after his World Cup commitments with Netherlands, with an official announcement expected within the next 10 days.

And with the season drawing to a close and the curtain coming down on his short tenure as David Moyes' successor, Giggs brought the entire squad, staff and loved ones together at the training ground in what appeared a symbolic end to the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The Welshman, along with 'Class of 92' United stalwarts Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, are unsure over their future roles at the club despite acquiring positions of huge influence since Ferguson's retirement.

It is thought that Van Gaal is keen to bring in his own backroom staff upon his appointment, something that Giggs in particular is aware of, as referenced in his pre-match press conference last Friday.

"I'm here until the end of the season," he said. "I have a lot to think about."

The mood at Sunday's get-together, however, was more celebratory than mournful, with the relaxed atmosphere that has been in effect since Giggs took over in full swing.

The Welshman, who has been with the club for over 25 years, was temporarily installed as Moyes' successor back in April and Goal understands he has the full backing of the staff within Carrington to take the job on a permanent basis.

But with Van Gaal's appointment thought to be imminent, Sunday’s fun-day was seen by some as the last time this group of players and staff will be together informally before the summer, when the World Cup and holidays are likely to coincide with a wholesale change of personnel.

The event was, therefore, seen as a 'goodbye' to the Sir Alex Ferguson era - a time that saw United sweep aside all before them, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies during an unprecedented period of success.

Ferguson himself was not present at Carrington on Sunday although he did make an appearance at the club's training ground earlier in the week, where he has been absent ever since Moyes was initially trusted with the job at Old Trafford.

Manchester United face Hull City on Tuesday night in the last home game of the season, ahead of a final-day trip to Southampton.

It appears all but certain that United will end the season in seventh – outside of the European places and with their worst ever points tally in a Premier League season.

Totti: Juventus not much stronger than Roma

    400288_heroa.jpg

Francesco Totti has congratulated Juventus with their Serie A title, but has stressed that Roma will prove in their next encounter that they are are on par with the champions. The Giallorossi's surprise defeat against Catania on Sunday saw the Bianconeri claim the Scudetto for the third year in succession, yet Totti is adamant that there's little to choose between both sides.

The Romans' next match comes against Antonio Conte's side at the Stadio Olimpico on May 11 and Totti has insisted the game provides a chance to show that they are worthy contenders for the title next season.

"We all know the campaign is over, but this is never a game like all the others," the veteran forward told Rai Sport."We will face them with the right spirit and determination to prove Juventus aren't much stronger than we are.

"There's not much I can say other than compliments to Juve for their title victory."
The Roma captain then went on to hail head coach Rudi Garcia's good work following his arrival in the Italian capital at the start of the season."Rudi Garcia arrived at Roma with the right mentality and transformed this side," the World Cup winner enthused. "The credit for this extraordinary campaign is above all down to him."

Roma are guaranteed second place in the Serie A table with two more games to go.

Mourinho hints at new deals for Terry, Lampard & Ashley Cole

    400302_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has hinted that John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole will all sign new contracts with Chelsea.

All three have just matter of weeks left to run on their current deals, with the left-back visibly emotional following the Blues final game of the season at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Terry recently underlined his desire to end his career with Chelsea, and Mourinho says he feels the trio's association with the club will not end this season.

"Again, they are with the club on their future," he told reporters. "I think they will play [for Chelsea] again. I think so."

Mourinho's men saw their Premier League title challenge all but ended by Sunday's goalless draw against Norwich City in a tame display that came shortly after their Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid.

It means Mourinho will end his first season back at Stamford Bridge without a trophy and the Portuguese expects a busy summer of comings and goings for the club in the transfer window.

"Now it's time to wait a little. The summer is a long summer for us," he said.

"For you, the media, with the World Cup, it's a different story. For the players involved in the World Cup it's a different story.

"But for us, as a club, it's a long time to be calm and to sit and to discuss and to analyse options and the market and possibilities. It's a long summer for us."

Rooney still a doubt for Hull clash - Giggs

    388323_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney could miss Manchester United's final home game of the season against Hull City as he is suffering from illness and an injury.

The England striker sat out Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Sunderland as he has been hampered by a bug as well as a hamstring problem.

Interim manager Ryan Giggs revealed on the eve of Tuesday's Premier League clash with Steve Bruce's side that his leading scorer may have played his last game of the campaign at Old Trafford.

"Wayne is probably struggling for the game," the former Wales international told MUTV

"He's not quite recovered. We'll continue to monitor him."

Giggs, who is considering selecting himself to play against Hull, also revealed that Jonny Evans is not expected to feature in the final two games of the season due to a calf injury.

There is more positive news of fellow defender Rafael, who is set to be back in contention to face the FA Cup finalists and Southampton on the final day.

"Rafa has trained in the last few days and looks good," Giggs enthused. "He could be involved in the remaining two games."

United could still climb into sixth place - and Europa League qualification - if they win both games and Tottenham lose to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Luis Suarez named Football Writers' Player of the Year

    390286_heroa.jpg

Liverpool star Luis Suarez has won the Football Writers' Player of the Year award, adding the prize to the Professional Footballers' Association's trophy he picked up eight days ago.

The striker topped the poll with 52 per cent of the vote, with team-mate Steven Gerrard and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure finishing second and third, respectively.

Suarez has netted 30 league goals this season to lead the division's scoring charts, and needs just two goals to break Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo's 31-goal hauls in a 38-game season record, despite missing the first five matches of the season due to suspension.

FWA chairman Andy Dunn said: "Those members who have been fortunate enough to be working at a match involving Luis Suarez have witnessed an astonishing talent first-hand.

"Tireless endeavour allied to extraordinary imagination makes an irresistible combination. Add ingenious, impudent finishing and you have a footballer who truly quickens the pulse."

"Luis is a remarkable gifted addition to the long and distinguished list of winners of our award."

The double award-winnning campaign marks a dramatic turnaround for the Uruguayan, who began the campaign by serving the remainder of a 10-game suspension for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

Previously the striker had also been involved in a race row involving Manchester United's Patrice Evra that also produced another lengthy ban.

Suarez can add to his goal return when Liverpool face Crystal Palace on Monday evening, with the club still in contention for a first ever Premier League title.

Rummenigge refuses to rule out Muller exit

    400287_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has suggested that the Bundesliga champions would consider selling Thomas Muller this summer if the Germany international were to demand a transfer. The versatile attacker is no longer an undisputed starter under Pep Guardiola and is believed to be unhappy with his lack of regular game time at the Allianz Arena.

Manchester United are supposedly closely monitoring the 24-year-old's situation in Bavaria and Rummenigge is ready to sit down with Muller to discuss the player's future.

"If a player does not feel well at Bayern Munich, he should come to my office," the FCB chief was quoted as saying by Bild."We will have to talk about things like that."

Muller has a contract with Bayern until the summer of 2017. He has netted 13 goals in 30 Bundesliga appearances this term.

:(Evra: I will decide my Manchester United future soon

    388916_heroa.jpg

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra says that he has yet to decide whether to stay at Old Trafford but will make up his mind at the end of the season.

Goal understands the Red Devils planned a final round of talks with the full-back in April with Inter and Monaco both interested in signing the Frenchman.

Evra says he will wait until the end of the season before figuring out what he wants to do but says he would find it difficult to leave the club he joined in 2006.

"I will decide in two weeks about what I am going to do," he told reporters.

"I am not lying to anyone. There have been a lot of rumours - am I going or staying. At the moment I have not decided anything. My agent will have a meeting with Manchester United and we will see.

"I just want to wait until the end of the season to decide what to do. Everyone knows how much I love this club. It’s difficult. The reason is an important reason. And you will see. I will tell if I am staying or leaving this club at the end of the season."

Evra also admitted that his season has been a "nightmare" for the reigning champions, who languish in seventh place having lost 12 Premier League games.

"This year is a season to forget really quickly. It’s been so painful. It is not about this game against Sunderland. It’s about lots of games," he added.

"This year we have been really poor. We deserve all the criticism. We didn’t play well enough. We lose some stupid games and that is why we are in this position. I really think it’s an accident.

"A lot of people know Sir Alex Ferguson was the heart of Manchester United. He is a legend. You cannot replace him so quickly. We knew it would be difficult but not this difficult.

"We can do much better than what we have done -maybe not win the league but at least qualify for the Champions League with the players we have got. It’s not about the manager. It’s a disaster this year. And it’s a season to forget.

"There has been a lack of confidence. Manchester United is not used to losing so many games in one year. It was a new experience for every player who was on that team.

"We are always playing to win trophies, four trophies. We always fight for that and this season has been a nightmare, one to forget really quickly."

Mata rallies Manchester United ahead of Hull City clash

    396870_heroa.jpg

Juan Mata wants to deliver a solid summer farewell to Manchester United fans when Hull City visit Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Last year's Premier League champions have suffered seven home defeats under David Moyes and Ryan Giggs this term - the club's worst home record since 1973-74, when they were relegated.

Mata, 26, became a club-record signing when he made the £37.1 million switch from Chelsea to Old Trafford in January, but has been unable to turn the tide of a torrid campaign.

But despite being dealt their 12th defeat of the season by Sunderland on Saturday, the Spaniard remains optimistic that United can give their fans something to cheer in their final home match of the season.

"The good thing is that on Tuesday we play again at Old Trafford against Hull City. It's our last game at home this season and we want to have a decent farewell in front of our fans, with a good game and a victory," Mata wrote in his blog.

"They have given us remarkable support throughout the last year and that shows the greatness of the club and the loyalty of our fans in the good and, in particular, the bad moments.

"We will then have to play one more game to finish the Premier League, next weekend at Southampton.

"Then it will be time to analyse what has been a complicated season for the club, although I'm sure the future will bring again titles and hapiness to our fans bcause that is what they deserve."
