:shocked:UEFA set to fine Manchester City £50m and restrict Champions League squad size

    premier-city-league-manchester-hull-etihad-stadium_2996058.jpg

Manchester City are set to be fined £50m and will have to contest next season's Champions League with a squad size limited to 21 players, after being found guilty of breaching UEFA's financial fair play rules.Sky sources understand the fine will be payable over three years although City are reportedly contesting the sanctions.

And with City deciding to appeal, the case will now be handed to a panel whose non-negotiable decision will be final.Full confirmation of the fine and conditions imposed is expected by the end of the week or early next week.

The risk of not agreeing with this decision is that the club could face even stiffer penalties from the CFCB's (UEFA's club financial control board) adjudicatory panel. The reduction in the size of their Champions League squad however, from 25 to 21, will hit the club hardest, with City having to ensure that there are still eight locally-trained players in their squad.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini refused to give his opinion regarding the sanction, saying: "When it is official news of UEFA we can analyse what happens with
the team. In this moment we don't know what happens."

UEFA president Michel Platini said recently that he did not expect any club to be excluded from next season's Champions League for breaching spending limits.French giants Paris Saint-Germain are one of eight other clubs currently under investigation for breaking UEFA's financial rules.French newspaper L'Equipe has reported that PSG are facing even stiffer penalties from UEFA than City.

Like City, they will be fined and see their Champions League squad reduced. But they will also have restrictions imposed on their wage bill and their transfers.Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is among those to have previously called for harsh sanctions on clubs that break Financial Fair Play rules.

He said last week: "There are rules to apply for Financial Fair Play. If you don't respect them, you have to apply the rules."One of the rules is that normally you should be banned for the excess of the financial amount that is not justified, that is if you are £100m overboard, you should be punished for £100m of your wages bill in the Champions League.

"I want to see that respected, if that is not respected, then the financial fair play will have problems to be respected in the future because everyone will just not consider it at all."If it is not respected, of course we will feel let down."

:(:(:(Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic to say goodbye to Old Trafford

    Vidic-signs-for-Utd-2006_3086973.jpg

Nemanja Vidic will wave goodbye to Old Trafford on Tuesday night as Manchester United take on Hull City in their last home match of the season.Vidic has spent the last eight and a half years at United, having joined from Spartak Moscow in a £7million deal on Christmas Day, 2005.

He will leave in the summer for Inter Milan having won five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008."I have no regrets," he said. "I've given this club 100 per cent and my time at this club will always rank as the best part of my career."It has been a great eight years - or a great seven years because at the moment we are not doing so well!

"I never considered staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for in this country is United and I have been lucky enough to be part of this club for so many years. I've got so many great memories. I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League."I've played for the greatest manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] and I have learned a lot, not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well.

"Manchester United make you feel part of the family. It has been a great experience for me."I have developed as a man at this club."Manchester United make you feel part of the family. It has been a great experience for me and my family."

Vidic will make his 299th appearance in all competitions as United face Hull and, injury permitting, he will round it off by making his 300th in their final game of the season at Southampton on Sunday.

It would have been many more but Vidic missed the second half of the 2011-12 season after rupturing knee ligaments in a Champions League game in Basel and three months of the following season with another knee problem. He has no hesitation abut naming his favourite memory.

"The Champions League final in 2008 [when United beat Chelsea on penalties],|" said Vidic. "You don't win the Champions League every year. The club has only won it three times and I was lucky to be part of one of those teams."And we won it Moscow, where I played for Spartak for 18 months. I came back to the stadium to lift the trophy and that's the greatest memory I have. I will certainly never forget that fantastic night, memories that will live with me and the fans forever."

The Serbian has arguably not been the same player since rupturing cruciate ligaments during United's Champions League defeat by Basel in December 2011, but he remains a firm favourite with the fans and coaching staff at Old Trafford.Left-back Patrice Evra joined United in the same transfer window as Vidic and the duo played for many years together in an experienced back-four, the foundation of Sir Alex Ferguson's all-conquering team.

Evra said: "When you see a player like Nemanja Vidic is leaving this club you feel really sad."I call him the rock. I am lucky to have played alongside him, for me he was a great centre-back."Evra, who could potentially join Vidic at Inter this summer, still regards the 32-year-old as one of the best centre-backs in the game.

But it has not all been plain sailing for Vidic, according to Evra."I remember our first game when we were in the reserves," the Frenchman said."It was so hard and we were so poor. (Reserve team coach) Rene (Meulensteen) was the manager and he substituted us both.

"We were talking together in the dressing room after and saying: 'Oh my God, why have we come to Manchester United?! We should go quickly back to our clubs!'. It was a difficult moment, but we stuck together."We've trained together and we've won the same trophies so losing Vida is painful."

Muntari: Milan must qualify for Europa League

    400840_heroa.jpg

AC Milan need to qualify for the Europa League next season, according to Sulley Muntari.

Despite an extremely poor start to the season, the Rossoneri beat archrivals Inter 1-0 on Sunday to pull themselves closer to Serie A's European spots with two games left to the season.

And the Ghana international believes his side deserve to be playing in Europe next term.

"We deserve to go to the Europa League at this point, it is feasible, though our direct competitors have done well and are having a great season," he told Canale Milan."Milan has to go to Europe. Next year we will."

Clarence Seedorf's side finish the season with games against Atalanta and Sassuolo as they look to secure a European place.

    Juventus confirm Vidal surgery

    400745_heroa.jpg

Juventus have confirmed that Arturo Vidal will undergo knee surgery on Wednesday, ending his Serie A season.

The midfielder, who has been a key part of Antonio Conte's Scudetto winning side once again this year, was known to be considering taking action on the long-standing fitness issue once the Bianconeri had the league title secured.

Having been crowned Italian champions on Sunday when Roma lost to Catania and followed up with a 1-0 home win against Atalanta on Monday to edge them closer to 100 points, Juve have confirmed that the 26-year-old will go under the knife this week."In the late afternoon on Tuesday Arturo Vidal had - in the presence of Juve and Chile national team doctors - an orthopaedic consultation in Barcelona," a statement on the club's website read.

"Tomorrow morning he will undergo keyhole surgery to the lateral meniscus in his right knee."Vidal is expected to be involved in the World Cup for Chile - who have been drawn with Spain, Netherlands and Australia in the group stage - although he may not be 100 per cent fit for the opening match.

He will definitely miss Juve's last two matches of the season - at Roma on Sunday then at home to Cagliari for the final match of 2013-14.

:(Phil Jones taken to hospital with shoulder injury

    401023_heroa.jpg

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been taken to hospital after damaging his shoulder in the club's game against Hull City.

Jones collided heavily with Maynor Figueroa at a corner and was immediately substituted, while pitchside reports claim that the 22-year-old had his arm in a sling, plunging his World Cup hopes into doubt.

Nemanja Vidic was brought on for the youngster, making his final appearance at Old Trafford in a United shirt ahead of his summer move to Inter.

Jones looked set to be among Roy Hodgson's defenders in Brazil this summer, having featured frequently in international squads alongside first-choice centre-backs Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka.

He has made over 100 appearances for the Red Devils since joining them from Blackburn in June 2011.

'Neymar can be world's best player' - Ronaldo

    400997_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Barcelona starlet Neymar could become the best player in the world. The Catalans signed the 22-year-old from Santos for an estimated €87.2 million and he has scored nine league goals and picked up eight assists in his first 25 games for the club.

Despite Real Madrid's intense rivalry with the reigning Liga champions, Ronaldo thinks that the Brazil international will blossom into one of the world's elite stars.
"I see Neymar as a great player," he told SporTV News. "I think in recent times he has proven be a player with a great future.

"His adaptation into Barcelona was not the best, he had some problems at first, but I have no doubt that he has the potential to be one of the best players in the world or even the very best player in the world."

The 29-year-old was then asked about his country's hopes for this summer's World Cup in Brazil and he feels Portugal have been drawn in the hardest group in the competition, facing Germany, Ghana and USA."We're not the favourites," he said. "But we will try to enjoy it. We know that we have a complicated group, in my opinion it's the strongest in the World Cup.

"We have to go step by step. We have a big game against the Germans first and then we play Ghana and the United States to pass the group stage. Then we'll see."

Conte one of the best in the world, says Marotta

    398162_heroa.jpg

Juventus CEO Beppe Moratta believes Antonio Conte is among the best coaches in the world after the club sealed a third straight Serie A title.

Roma's 4-1 defeat to Catania on Sunday ensured that the Bianconeri retained their title regardless of their result against Atalanta, whom they eventually beat 1-0 on Monday. And Marotta is in no doubt as to who was behind their success in recent years."It's an extraordinary and unique achievement," he told the club's official site.

"The credit must certainly go to the coach, who, aside from his technical and professional abilities, is a magnificent leader of the group and has instilled a winning mentality since his first day."We’re proud of our coach who I regard as one of the best in the world, not just because of his important footballing principles, but also for the way he’s able to manage and motivate the squad.

"We said and knew that it would be a difficult season, but we were able to count on a superb coach and team who had great hunger and motivation to achieve this third title."

    Simeone: Atletico relishing title bid

    400930_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone is confident Atletico Madrid can rise to the challenge of winning an enthralling race for the La Liga title.

Simeone's charges were beaten for the first time in 11 matches on Sunday, when Levante won 2-0 to strike a blow to the Madrid side's quest to be crowned Spanish champions for the first time since 1996.

Despite that loss, Atletico's destiny remains very much in their own hands going into the final two games, although Real Madrid and Barcelona are still in with a shout of winning the title.

Simeone believes his squad are enjoying the excitement that has come with this season's title race, stating that they see winning the title as a responsibility rather than a pressure.

"We're in for three weeks of excitement. We have to take it in our stride and keep working well. It's less an adrenaline rush and more a feeling of vertigo," Marca quote the former Argentina midfielder as saying.

"I experienced it a lot during my playing career and it's a feeling we like and are enjoying. You should always believe and we do."What we're doing is a responsibility. We don't see these weeks in terms of pressure: we're taking them as a challenge that we have to rise to."

Simeone also called for caution after the defeat to Levante, which came on a weekend where none of the top three picked up maximum points. The former Inter and Lazio man, who has also guided his side to a Champions League final against city rivals Real, is relishing being in such a strong position so late in the season.

"We're in an ideal situation and we'd have all taken it if we'd been offered it at the beginning of the season," he added."The facts speak for themselves: we lost to Levante but it's still in our hands. We have to be strong."

Atleti are three points clear of Barcelona, with Carlo Ancelotti's Real side are two points further back with a game in hand - at Real Valladolid on Wednesday.

Blanc hails impact of 'group leader' Ibrahimovic

    398482_heroa.jpg

The return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to training has already buoyed the Paris Saint-
Germain squad, according to coach Laurent Blanc.

The talismanic striker has been out of action since limping off with a hamstring injury during the Champions League quarter-final first-leg victory over Chelsea at the start of April. Ibrahimovic has been named in the PSG squad for their Ligue 1 clash with Rennes on Wednesday - an evening when Blanc's men will be crowned champions for a second season running with a win.

Blanc is positive over Ibrahimovic's chances of a return to action and feels his presence in training has boosted morale in the camp."Zlatan is in good physical and mental shape," he said.

"This week in training, the team has shown a lot of commitment. I think it is a good sign."When Zlatan returns to training, there is more motivation in the team. He is a group leader."

Despite his recent absence, Ibrahimovic has scored 40 goals in all competitions for PSG this term, helping them to win the Coupe de la Ligue and put them on the verge of a successful Ligue 1 defence.Blanc, who is approaching the end of his debut season at the Parc des Princes, added that Ibrahimovic is the best player in the league.

"Zlatan is definitely the best player in Ligue 1 now," he added."But there have been others in history as well."

Kluivert will not be part of Manchester United backroom team

    359017_heroa.jpg

Netherlands assistant coach Patrick Kluivert will not be part of Louis van Gaal's backroom team at Manchester United.

The former Oranje striker, who has been Van Gaal's assistant since August 2012, had reportedly been set to link up with the 62-year-old at United.

But Goal has learned that Kluivert will not be going to Old Trafford, which paves the way for Ryan Giggs to be offered the role of assistant manager to Van Gaal.

The Dutchman is expected to be named the next United manager this week after agreeing a deal to replace David Moyes 10 days ago during a meeting with a United delegation at his villa in the Algarve.

Giggs, who will take charge of United against Hull City on Tuesday night in the third of his four matches in interim charge, has spoken of how his own future remains unclear.

However, the obstacles to him being given a senior role on the coaching staff now appear to be less prominent than thought.

Danny Blind, Van Gaal's No.2 with the Netherlands, will also not be joining his fellow Dutchman at Old Trafford.

The delay in confirming Van Gaal's appointment is believed to have been partly due to extended negotiations over the make-up of the backroom team who will work under the former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax manager.

United senior officials are keen to keep Giggs and the 'Class of 92' on board, well aware of not only the need to plan for the future but also of their political importance to the club and its supporters.

Van Gaal, who turns 63 in August, represents a relatively short-term fix and a considerable departure from the long-term planning trumpeted by United in the wake of David Moyes's appointment 12 months ago.

Moyes's disastrous tenure came to an abrupt end when he was sacked a fortnight ago, and United chiefs swiftly put their faith in an experienced manager with a proven track record of success.

Van Gaal had three meetings with Tottenham but, as interest from Old Trafford grew, told the Spurs hierarchy that he was not interested in taking over at White Hart Lane.

He was also approached by Arsenal due to uncertainty over the future of Arsene Wenger, but has decided to take on the challenge of restoring United to pre-eminence.
