:(Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea: Blues comeback secures Under-21s title

    405299hp2.jpg

Chelsea sealed the Under-21s Premier League title after Lewis Baker's late strike sealed victory over Manchester United.

Playing in front of over 13,000 fans at Old Trafford, the Blues, who had finished top of the table at the end of the regular season, dominated much of the match despite falling behind to an early Tom Lawrence strike.

Charly Musonda responded soon in brilliant style after but the visiting supporters were made to wait until 11 minutes from time for the winner as Baker fired home, having missed a number of earlier chances.

United lined up with James Wilson, who scored twice on his first-team debut against Hull City, up front on his own while Lawrence, who also debuted in that game, played just behind him in midfield.

Despite a bright start from the hosts, it was goalkeeper Ben Amos who was called into early action as he was forced to acrobatically tip a rasping Baker drive from 25 yards around the post.

At the other end, Wilson worked himself a sight of goal, only for his bending shot to strike Lawrence as it looked set to test Jemal Blackman.

But the pair were on the same wavelength just moments later as a low cross from Saidy Janko on the right was well controlled by Wilson inside the box and, after the striker found Lawrence, the midfielder skipped past one tackle before curling a left-footed effort past Blackman.

Janko was causing countless problems for Chelsea down the United right and he would have created an opportunity for Andreas Pereira had the playmaker's first touch been more secure.

The hosts would be made to rue that mistake as the visitors went straight up the other end and equalised Musonda picked up the ball on the left before cutting inside onto his right foot, beating four United defenders and planting a low shot into the bottom corner.

The Belgian's strike seemed to galvanise Dermot Drummy's side and the winger was again involved when his ball across the edge of the box found its way to John Swift, only for the midfielder's effort to curl just wide.

With the half wearing down, so did the action, with the only flashpoint of the final 15 minutes of the first half coming when Paddy McNair had appeals for a penalty waved away after going down under the challenge of Ola Aina.

United had struggled to get going after Mudonda's strike and they almost fell behind early in the second period when full-back Adam Nditi was afforded far too much room but his shot from 25 yards was well held by Amos.

With Wilson very much on the periphery, Warren Joyce's side were struggling to get a foothold and Chelsea really should have taken the lead when Baker blazed over the top from Ruben Loftus-Cheek's pull back.

Loftus-Cheek was beginning to have more and more influence on the match himself and it was only the alertness of Amos at his near post that kept him from making it 2-1. Running from deep, the midfielder was allowed far too much room on the right-hand side of the box but his angled drive was parried by the goalkeeper's body.

With Wilson substituted due to a knock, the home side switched Lawrence to a central role but it was Chelsea who continued to threaten the United goal as Islam Feruz volleyed wide from Musonda's cross.

Joyce's charges were, in truth, poor but they almost grabbed the lead 12 minutes from time when Kasey Palmer lost the ball inside the Chelsea half, only for Ben Pearson to hit his effort straight at Blackman from the edge of the box.

And, as with the opener, the hosts were made to pay just seconds later as Baker cut inside onto his right foot after Charni Ekangamene's poor clearance and drilled his shot past Amos into the bottom corner.

The hosts threw on Tyler Blackett as they looked for an equaliser and the midfielder almost find one in spectacular fashion as his stunning 30-yard volley was pushed away by Blackman in the last moments of stoppage time.

Kevin-Prince Boateng buoyed by Essien Ghana return

    342478_heroa.jpg

Schalke midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng believes Ghana's World Cup 2014 hopes have been boosted by the return of Michael Essien. The Black Stars face Portugal, USA and Germany in Group G, but following the selection of the AC Milan star, Boateng is quietly confident of causing a surprise.

“Every group is a group of death. We have two very, very strong opponents. But you also mustn't underestimate the USA. But that's why you are qualifying, to be able to mess with the best. It is nice that this already starts in the group. I am looking forward to it,” the 27-year-old told Goal Germany’s Hassan Talib.

“It is very important that Essien is back. He was a key player we lost. That way our midfield will get much stronger, I believe. Thus, we also have a chance to win against the Germans. Already at the last World Cup, we were one of the few teams that caused problems for Germany.”

Boateng added: “We are even stronger than 2010. We have more experience and it is very important that Essien is back, that gives us a real boost. Is the semi-final the goal? I don't know. I don't want to set any goals. I don't want to say I want to reach the semi-finals or like our president said: 'Becoming world champions.'

“If we play disciplined and concentrated game we have the chance to be better than 2010. There are a lot of factors. We need to win the first group match against the USA. You can only do that with discipline. And that's what we need.”
The former Milan star was full of praise for coach Appiah, adding that his philosophy works well for the national team, despite his relative lack of experience.

“Coach Kwesi Appiah has a totally different approach to the team. He was born in Ghana, speaks the language. He likes having a few older players around that help him a bit. He is a young coach, didn't coach many teams yet. And I believe this synergy in the national squad is very good.

“We have to become world champions (is what people in Ghana think)! That is very clear, they want us to become world champions. The whole continent awaits that time that an African team will win this title. These are the hopes in Ghana.

Everyone is praying for this and then let's see how far we will go. You want to make the country happy but it's not that easy to become world champions.”

Vieira shocked by Nasri France snub

    350692_heroa.jpg

Patrick Vieira thinks that Didier Deschamps has made a huge mistake in leaving Manchester City star Samir Nasri out of France's World Cup squad.

Vieira has played alongside Nasri at international level and now works closely with him at the Etihad Stadium, where he is on the coaching staff, and cannot believe Deschamps opted not to take him to Brazil.

"It's a mistake," said the former Arsenal captain. "If you want to have a chance of winning the World Cup, you have to take your best players. I think this year Samir has played fantastically well. He was one of our best players at City and played a massive part in our success.

"He did everything to go to the World Cup and he deserves to go to Brazil. His first year at City was really good but this year he has been fantastic, scoring goals, making assists. The way he has grown up is his influence on the group and the team. He is a positive lad, he has been working really hard and he is taking more responsibility on his shoulders."

Nasri has picked up a negative reputation which has followed him around since he was a boy wonder in France, while his time at Arsenal ended with an acrimonious move to City, but Vieira insists that the playmaker does not deserve to be labelled a troublemaker.

He added: "I played with Samir in the national team and I am still working with him at City. We have never heard anyhing like this about him.

"I think in France sometimes they are not strong enough to deal with big personalities and he does have a strong personality. It's quite surprising because Deschamps has personality and experience."

Vieira does not believe that Nasri's exclusion will affect City negatively, though, and he knows that the challenge for them is to retain their Premier League title this time.

"It is important, if you want to make your name in the top tier, you have to try to win it back-to-back [titles]," he said. "When I was at Arsenal, with all the experience we had, we never won it back to back and it is really important if you are there to win it - bam, bam, bam - three or four times in a row. That makes a real impact.

"It is about how you deal with the success. Of course, if you win it and go to any other ground as champions, it is going to be more difficult because people want to beat you even more. Mentally we will have to be prepared for that as a football club."

Sherwood wants quick return after Tottenham sacking

    404684_heroa.jpg

Tim Sherwood is eyeing a swift return to management after being sacked by Tottenham on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old moved up from his role in Spurs' youth setup to replace Andre Villas-Boas in December, eventually leading the club to sixth in the Premier League, but his tenure was littered with rumours that he would be replaced at the end of the campaign, despite signing an 18-month contract at White Hart Lane.

While Sherwood admits that chairman Daniel Levy's decision to dispense with him came as no surprise, he is keen to use what he learned in north London at another club before long.

"Put it this way: I didn't fall off my chair when he told me," he told ITV.

"It's obviously a disappointment to lose your job, a job I thought I'd done reasonably well in.

"I have to respect the decision of the club. It's a massive club and bigger than any manager that comes in so I fully respect their decision."

"It was a massive learning curve, my first opportunity to manage," Sherwood added.

"I've seen it all - wins, draws, losses, a few tantrums and the sack, which I didn't want to see, so I've experienced a lot in five months and certainly learnt a lot.

"I have to see if another door opens and onto the next, as they say.

"I like doing it. For anyone to want to do that job, [they] must be crazy but I knew what I was going into.

"It occupies your mind totally. I really liked it and really enjoyed it and I can't wait to get back in."

Van der Sar considered for Manchester United return

    273086_heroa.jpg

Manchester United could turn to former No.1 Edwin van der Sar to take up the role of goalkeeping coach this summer.

The current occupant of that role, Chris Woods, who was brought to the club by David Moyes, was kept on despite the Scot's sacking and the departure of fellow backroom staff members Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden.

But Woods is also now set to exit Old Trafford, with the arrival of Louis van Gaal as coach understood to be imminent.

Van der Sar was originally offered a coaching role by Sir Alex Ferguson prior to his retirement from playing in 2011, but turned down the job to spend more time with his family.

The former Netherlands international has remained an ambassador for the club, however, and took a Masters in sports management before becoming a marketing director at Ajax.

But Van Gaal, who coached Van der Sar and Ajax to a Champions League trophy in 1995, could persuade the 43-year-old to return to Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is also understood to have held talks with Ryan Giggs, who took temporary charge of the club following Moyes' sacking, on Wednesday.

Goal understands that the Dutchman is keen to keep Giggs at the club in a coaching capacity.

:cool:Ryan Giggs gets offer to assist Van Gaal

    soc_g_giggsr_576x324.jpg

Ryan Giggs has been offered the job as Manchester United's assistant manager after having talks with Louis van Gaal on Wednesday, a source told ESPN.

The Netherlands manager is set to be announced as the successor to the sacked David Moyes and Giggs, who had been in interim charge for the final four games of the season, will be given the chance to be his right-hand man, the source said.
The 40-year-old was pictured outside the Hotel Oranje in Noordwijk, Holland, after meeting Van Gaal, who had a day away from the Netherlands' pre-World Cup training camp in Hoenderloo on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager emerged as the favourite to take over at Old Trafford after Moyes was dismissed on April 22.
He has been in discussions with United's executive vice-president Ed Woodward, who is overseeing the search for the club's second manager in as many seasons.
There has been a strong preference at board level for continuity on the coaching staff and Giggs is held in high esteem by the Old Trafford power-brokers.

His lack of experience meant he was not considered for the job, but Giggs is regarded as a potential future manager. The 40-year-old, who was a player-coach under Moyes, is yet to decide whether to extend his career on the pitch and said it may depend on whether the next manager wants him to carry on.

He made his 963rd appearance for United as a substitute against Hull in their final home game.On Wednesday, several reports said Giggs would be meeting Van Gaal over finalising their new management team, with Van Gaal set to speak with Giggs over his future at Old Trafford.

On Tuesday, Van Gaal refused to answer questions about United during a news conference to unveil the Netherlands side for the World Cup.

Al Ain 0-3 Manchester City: Comfortable win for Premier League champions in friendly

    405674hp2.jpg

Goals from Marcos Lopes, Stevan Jovetic and Jordy Hiwula gave Manchester City a comfortable 3-0 win over Al Ain in a pre-season friendly clash in the United Arab Emirates.

In an exhibition game to open the brand-new Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, City started quickly and twice appealed for a penalty within the first three minutes. First, the ball appeared to strike a hand in the box before Aleksandar Kolarov was bundled over but the referee waved both appeals away.

Al Ain swiftly grew in confidence, despite the visitors dominating possession, and carved out a chance in the seventh minute, with a deep cross from the left finding Mohammed Salem, though he could only direct his resulting header wide of the post.

The near-miss served to further inspire the brave hosts and Omar Abdulrahman was then set away by an incisive pass, only for his chipped finish to be palmed over by Costel Pantilimon, much to the disgust of Yassine El Ghanassy, who had escaped his marker in the box.

But Al Ain's forward momentum was halted in the 17th minute, with Matija Nastasic crumpling to the floor in pain after a fairly innocuous challenge. The physios rushed on to treat the defender but, after a stoppage in play, the City man was able to continue and the break in play worked to City's advantage, with Jovetic swiftly pushing forward. The Montenegrin striker weaved his way through the Al Ain defence and snapped a shot at goal, though Waleed Salem was able to see the ball wide.

The opportunity appeared to prompt a change from the home side, with a remarkable quintuple substitution made in the 23rd minute.

Yet it did nothing to halt the flow of City's attacks, with Micah Richards the next to go close 10 minutes later. The right-back – who played a bit-part role in the Premier League season – latched onto a sumptuous pass from Jovetic and smashed an effort against the post, with Salem beaten.

In a bid to finish the half strongly, Manuel Pellegrini's men continued to pour forward and Kolarov dug out a superb cross from the left byeline in the 38th minute, which found Samir Nasri, but the Frenchman – axed from his country's World Cup squad earlier in the week – could not keep his volley down and fired over the crossbar.

With the second half only just underway, Nasri was again involved, with a fan running onto the pitch to cuddle his idol. The midfielder did not look too impressed and the pitch invader was quickly ushered away by security.

And it was Al Ain who had the first chance of the half, with Richard Wright – introduced at half-time – forced into a good save from Ismail Matar before a free kick was bent just wide.

The home side were swiftly made to pay for their profligacy, with Lopes opening the scoring in the 62nd minute, following a narrow miss from Jovetic. Nasri collected the ball on the halfway line and played a gorgeous through-ball to the 18-year-old, who coolly slotted home from just inside the box to give the fans a glimpse into the future of the Premier League champions.

Yet Lopes was soon crashing back down to earth, with the youngster firing wide from six yards out after a glorious cross from Kolarov.

And he was almost made to pay when Al Ain next pushed forward, with Wright forced into a stunning double save in the 70th minute. Just 60 seconds later, Dedryck Boyata collected the ball in his own half and rampaged through the Al Ain defence, though his eventual shot from inside the box kissed the post on its way wide.

City, though, would not be denied and Jovetic made it 2-0 in the 78th minute, the tricky forward springing the offside trap and beating the goalkeeper twice before powering home.

With confidence coursing through Jovetic's veins, the star played a glorious eye-of-the-needle pass to substitute Sinan Bytyqi inside the box but the youngster's caressed effort skipped narrowly wide.

And City finally rounded off their victory with just two minutes left – almost immediately after Al Ain had hit the post – with Hiwula scoring from the penalty spot, having drawn the offending foul himself.

    Andre Ayew confirms Napoli offer

    335278_heroa.jpg

Ghana international Andre Ayew has confirmed that Napoli have made a bid for his services. The left winger, 24, has been the subject of intense transfer speculation as he approaches the final year of his contract, which expires in June 2015.

However, Ayew says he is fully focused on playing at World Cup 2014 and is reluctant to make a decision over his future until after the tournament. He told Football411: “Yes, it is true, there was an offer from Naples. It has also been confirmed by my agent, but I'll decide my future.

"It will be up to the company to make decisions, I have a contract with Olympique Marseille and we have not yet sat down to talk about my future.

“It’s too early to know whether or not my club will accept the offer from Napoli, however, if I were to go to Napoli or to another team, it will be decided only after the World Cup in Brazil.”Ayew scored five goals in 24 matches for Marseille in 2013/14.

'I've lived the dream' - Puyol bids farewell to Barcelona

    405643_heroa.jpg

An emotional Carles Puyol expressed his pride at having "lived the dream" at Barcelona after calling time on his trophy-laden career.

The 36-year-old will retire at the end of the season after a long-standing knee injury finally took its toll on the combative centre-half.Puyol is a one-club man who won six Liga titles and three Champions League crowns, earning himself a reputation as one of the game's true greats along the way.

Addressing a farewell event held in his honour at Camp Nou on Thursday, Puyol recalled playing football with his brother as a child when such lofty achievements seemed mere fantasy.

"I would never have thought then that I would have this great career," he said.
"I've lived the dream of so many young kids, doing what I most enjoy in life, playing football and training. I've won lots of titles but the most important thing is the human warmth and feeling I take from this club. I came here as a boy and I'm leaving with a family who I'm really proud of."

Team-mates past and present were among the huge crowd gathered to bid a fond farewell to the Spaniard, who has 100 caps to his name and boasts World Cup and European Championship winners medals.

Puyol underlined his desire to be remembered as a wholehearted and committed player, while highlighting the sheer joy of having been able to play the sport he loves at the highest level.

"The one thing I have very clear is that I gave my absolute all for Barcelona and for football and I would like to be remembered as a player who did just that – who gave everything," he said."For 19 years I have been able to do what I love. I've won many trophies but what will remain with me is the human side of this club."

He also offered his thanks to the fans and paid tribute to former coach Tito Vilanova, who died last month.Reflecting on his remarkable career, Puyol chose Eric Abidal lifting the Champions League trophy in 2011 as his most memorable moment.

Abidal, who missed the 2009 final through suspension, had recently undergone surgery to remove a tumour in his liver and was handed the captain's armband for the 3-1 win over Manchester United at Wembley.

"It's very difficult to pick a special moment – but if I had to choose one I'd say when Abidal lifted the Champions League trophy due to everything that it implied," Puyol explained."He gave us the example of fighting, he didn't give up and he was with the team and he could live a very special moment, a moment he deserved most than anyone."

Barca can win a 23rd top-flight crown with victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday and Puyol has faith that his side will deliver, though he will play no part.
"I don't think I will need to give a speech to the squad before the match," he said. "It's a 'final' we have to win and with our supporters on our side, I am sure we will do it."

President Josep Bartomeu described Puyol as "the best captain in the history of the club", while Barca stalwart Xavi added: "Thank you for everything you have given us, for your courage, your bravery, your sacrifices."

Dortmund have broken Fifa rules - Torino chief

    402948_heroa.jpg

Torino director Alberto Barile has criticised Borussia Dortmund for their conduct in the pursuit of Ciro Immobile, insisting the Bundesliga runners-up have broken Fifa regulations.

The German giants are understood to have been in contact with the Serie A top scorer, who is co-owned by Juventus and Torino.

And Barile says Dortmund have spoken to the player and Juventus but have not contacted them, which violates Fifa's rules that a pursuing club must contact the player's current club in writing before negotiations can begin.

"Last Friday, BVB only spoke with Juventus - and then in the evening with Ciro or with his adviser," Barile told SPOX.

"However, he belongs to us. Moreover, he plays for us so I really would like to know how Dortmund came up with the idea to only talk to Juventus."In any case, the entire approach violates Fifa's transfer rules. So far neither Borussia Dortmund or Atletico Madrid have reported to us.

"We have an important game on Sunday in Florence, which means everything for us - we do not want such stories as it won't help our Europa League chances.
"We will talk with Ciro about the situation after the season. If he really wants to go then we will be putting any obstacles in the way. Angelo Ogbonna also came to us at the end of last season and asked for a transfer to a big club and we let him go to Juventus.

"It would be good for him if he stays with us. We're like a family here and we have a very good relationship with him."

'Costa raring to go for Barca clash' - Miranda

    392312_heroa.jpg

Diego Costa is fit and ready to be unleashed for Atletico Madrid's league title decider at Barcelona on Saturday, according to team-mate Miranda.

Diego Simeone's table-toppers travel to Catalunya for their final league game of the season three points clear of second-placed Barca, knowing a draw would be enough to claim their first league title since 1996.

Should they avoid defeat this weekend, Atleti will secure the first part of a potentially historic double, with the capital club set to face neighbours and arch-rivals Real Madrid in next Saturday's Champions League final.

There had been concern that Costa - who has scored 36 goals in all competitions this season - could be absent for both games, but the 25-year-old is now back in training and, according to Miranda, is desperate to fire Atleti to glory."He's raring to play - he knows how important this is to us and he'll be on form to do his stuff," he told Marca.

Barca will retain their Liga crown with a win on Saturday, as that result would give them a superior head-to-head record over Atletico. But Simeone's side have held something of a hoodoo over the reigning champions this term, having won one and drawn four of their five meetings in the league, Champions League and Super Cup.

And Miranda is confident that Atleti are fully prepared to extend that unbeaten run this weekend."They'll come out strong and we will have to stay tight at the back because I'm sure we'll score a goal against them," he added.

"To beat Barcelona, we have to play with a lot of intensity, to play well physically. We've been preparing for it very well all week and will arrive 100 per cent ready."

Pirlo: I hope Conte stays at Juventus

    405524_heroa.jpg

Andrea Pirlo hopes coach Antonio Conte will follow him in agreeing a new deal to stay with Juventus.

Juve have been crowned Serie A champions for the third consecutive time under the coach but the 44-year-old has hinted he could leave the club this summer.

Pirlo, though, hopes the former midfielder will, like him, sign a new deal with the Turin club and says his side hope to become the first Italian team to finish with more than 100 points in the league.

"He took us to three league championships in a row and has given us so much," he told Sky Sport Italia. "Hopefully the next game will not be his last.

"At the end of the season he is tired and wants to go on holiday. You have doubts, but I and all the people connected to Juventus hope to continue this adventure together with him.

"My renewal? We have more or less reached an agreement, I hope the announcement is given in a few days.

"One hundred and two points would be a unique achievement, we have this great opportunity and we will not let it escape us."

On Wednesday night, Sevilla lifted the Europa League in the Juventus Stadium after beating Benfica on penalties in the final. And Pirlo spoke of the disappointment of seeing another team win the competition on his side's field after they were eliminated in the semi-final by the Portuguese outfit.

"There is a big regret of not being able to play the final in our stadium, because I think that Juve are stronger than Benfica and Sevilla," he explained. "It was one of our goals after we were knocked out of the Champions League.

"We were not able to reach it but it was still an important step in going a step further next year.

"Besides, it's not easy to win in Europe. Watch PSG and Manchester United. Football is this: you play a lot, but one team wins."

The 34-year-old turned his attention to Italy's World Cup campaign as the competition in Brazil approaches.

"The minimum goal is to go through to the knockout stages, then we'll see, anything can happen.

"Brazil are the favourites, they are a good team, but in football everything is to play for.

"How much of a factor will the climate be? Huge, but this is an important factor for everyone else as well."

Eto'o: Mourinho is a fool for calling me old

Samuel Eto'o has labelled Jose Mourinho a "fool" after the Chelsea boss questioned the veracity of his official age earlier in the season.

Mourinho was unwittingly caught on camera lamenting the quality of the strikers at his disposal at a sponsors' event in Switzerland in February, and jokingly suggested that Eto'o could be older than he claims to be.

The now-33-year-old appeared to react in jest by celebrating his next Chelsea goal by holding his back in false pain, aping the manner of a geriatric.

However, Eto'o - who is now out of contract at Stamford Bridge - has blasted Mourinho for his comments, while also insisting that he can continue playing at the highest level for the foreseeable future.

"Today, I am 33-years-old - and it is not because a fool called me an old man that you must believe it," the Cameroonian told africanfootball.com.

"And you may have noticed that the old man was better than the youngsters. Some believe I am going to retire in the United States or in the Middle East, but I have regained the joy of the Champions League and I am going to carry on playing in the Champions League.

"Where? I am not going to tell you."

Eto'o is set to feature at his fourth World Cup for Cameroon next month, and the four-time African Player of the Year feels he could go on and break Lothar Matthaus' and Antonio Carbajal's record of playing at five World Cups.

"I am going to carry on playing because physically and mentally I feel great," he added.

"So I am going to go to this World Cup and to the next one when I will be 37. Some did it at 42, so I can still play at two more World Cups."

Bale: Ronaldo is a great man

Gareth Bale believes his Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is misunderstood, claiming the Portugal international is a "great man" off the pitch.

Bale joined Real in an €100 million deal from Tottenham last summer, a fee which eclipsed the previous world-record fee of €94m that Real paid Manchester United to acquire Ronaldo.

But the Welshman insists his fellow forward has done all he can to make him feel welcome in the Spanish capital and has praised the star's "absolutely amazing" attitude.

In an interview with BT Sport, Bale said: "I think since the first step that I made into Real Madrid he’s been absolutely amazing with me. He’s given me advice on and off the pitch, with football matters and he’s given me advice where to live and stuff like that.

"He is such a nice guy, so helpful, always wants the best for the team and obviously people write things about him but people who actually know him know exactly what he is like and he’s a great man and a great footballer as well."

Bale joined Luka Modric in Madrid, a former team-mate of his at Tottenham, and the Wales international admits having the Croatian in the dressing room has helped him settle in swiftly at the Bernabeu.

"Yes, we were there for five years together at Tottenham and we actually got on really well there as well so having him here obviously was a massive plus for me," he added.

"I obviously spoke to him about it, when he came to Madrid he didn’t really know anybody so it was quite difficult for him in his first year but having him here this year has made me settle in so much quicker.

"Just being able to go in to the group and knowing someone, hanging around with them rather than feeling I am stuck on my own so it’s been a great help on and off the pitch and obviously I’m thankful for that."

Despite there being a number of international stars within the Real squad, and with Zinedine Zidane a member of the coaching staff, Bale insists he has never been “in awe of anybody” at Real.

“Obviously [Zidane] is one of the best players that has ever played the game but he was there to welcome me on the first day like everybody else and everyone has been so great... I don’t really get in awe of anybody.

"I just know if I go out and play my football then I’ll be with everybody else."

Hazard sets sights on Ballon d'Or

Eden Hazard has set his sights on winning the Ballon d'Or after being crowned Chelsea's player of the season.

The Belgium winger has scored 17 goals in 49 matches for the Stamford Bridge outfit this season and his performances were recognised at the club's awards ceremony on Monday.

But Hazard has his eye on a bigger prize and, despite reports linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, suggested Chelsea was the best place to achieve his aims.

"I want to be the best, I hope one day I can win the Ballon d'Or, maybe not now but if I work every day and take pleasure from my game then why not?" he told the club's official website.

"The Champions League and the World Cup are the best competitions in the world," he continued. "For a young player like me it's good to play for a club who can reach the semi-final or the final because that's why I play football, for the big games.

"In the English Premier League you play Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and Man United every week and it's very good."

Hazard admitted his disappointment at having missed out on silverware this season and is determined to make up for that in the 2014-15 campaign.

"I came here for trophies, this season was good for me but not collectively because we didn't win anything, and last season we won the Europa League," he added. "Individually it's been good because I was able to play in almost every game, be on the pitch and do what I enjoy doing most, which is to play football.

"This season was an 'almost' season - almost in the Champions League final, almost champions in the Premier League. I hope next season it will better and we can go to the next level."
