:love:Beckham: Youth focus makes Van Gaal a great fit for Manchester United

    334499_heroa.jpg

David Beckham believes that Louis van Gaal's commitment to developing youth players makes him a great fit for Manchester United.

The former Bayern Munich, Ajax and Barcelona coach was announced as the new man in the dugout at Old Trafford on Monday, and the ex-England captain sees him as the ideal appointment.

"He has got a history of working with young players, bringing players through academy systems at places like Ajax," Beckham told Sky Sports News. "That can only be great for Manchester United.

"As a Manchester United fan and for Manchester United as a club, to have someone like this with his pedigree ... he has worked with some of the biggest and best players in the world."

Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs called time on his incredible playing career to become Van Gaal's No.2, a decision which came as a shock to Beckham.

The 39-year-old remarked: "I'm surprised he's retired because he was still playing great. Physically, he's still in great condition; to play for so many years at the top level you have to be in great condition.

"Now he has a new role at the club and it was great to see him walk out as Manchester United manager for those four games.

"When you've got someone like Giggsy, who all the players respect and all the fans love, it makes a huge difference. His role now has totally changed and I'm sure he will find it an easy transition because he takes things in his stride. He's not affected by anything.

"He knows the club better than most people who are at Manchester United now."

Fellow members of United’s legendary 'Class of '92' Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville assisted Giggs during his spell in temporary charge of the team, a development which Beckham found moving.

"It will be great to see if Scholesy, Butty and Phil can be involved [in the Van Gaal regime]," he added.

"When I saw them all sat on the bench it was an amazing sight and it was one that made me emotional - I've spent my whole career with these lads. Of course I [wanted to be sat there with them]; I was proud to see that image."

'I'm wearing the best colours now' - Juanfran puts Real past behind him

    408116_heroa.jpg

Juanfran remains grateful to Real Madrid for developing him as a player but says that he is glad that he is now wearing the red and white of Atletico.

The defender came through Los Blancos' youth system, making six Liga appearances for the Santiago Bernabeu side before leaving for Osasuna - after a loan spell at Espanyol - and then moving to the Vicente Calderon in 2011.

However, despite his Real background, Juanfran insisted ahead of Saturday's all-Madrid Champions League final in Lisbon that he is now Atletico through and through.

"I'm very grateful to Madrid for the years I spent there, how they treated me and trained me, but now I'm an Atletico Madrid player and I am aware I've been wearing the best colours," the right-back told Uefa.

"Of course, matches against Real Madrid are different, they are more special, but all I want and all I think about, above all, is victory for Atletico - the past is behind me."

Atletico go into the final as the newly crowned champions of Spain, having claimed their first Primera Division title since 1996 courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Barcelona last weekend.

Juanfran, however, says that winning the Champions League would be an even greater achievement for the Rojiblancos, who have only appeared in one previous final, in 1974, when they were beaten by Bayern Munich.

"It would be incredible, for me and my family," the 29-year-old stated. "They are proud of what I have done and what I am doing.

"But, of course, being a European champion and being the best team in Europe is as good as it gets."

Real Madrid are clear favourites, insists Atletico's Suarez

    408050_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez believes that city rivals Real are the "clear favourites" going into Saturday's Champions League final.

The Rojiblancos were crowned champions of Spain last weekend courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Barcelona, with Los Blancos coming home in third place.

However, Suarez believes that in spite of Atletico's Liga title triumph, Diego Simeone's side have to be considered underdogs against a Real side that is bidding to win the European Cup for the 10th time.

"They are clear favourites to win; they are used to playing these type of matches," the 27-year-old told reporters ahead of what is just Atletico's second ever appearance in the final.

"They are favourites to win just like they were in La Liga. But we've given our all and we are a team that plays with a lot of intensity, so we are going to fight to win as we always do but they are favourites to win.

"I personally don't care what people say. We are going to do what we always do and that is to play football, work hard, be humble and give 100 per cent in the match.

"We'll see what happens when the match is over and who ends up celebrating."

Meanwhile, Filipe Luis believes that Atletico's supporters can inspire them to victory, just as they did in the Copa del Rey final at the Santiago Bernabeu 12 months ago.

"The fans' chanting is very important for us, like in the cup, although that was different because it was in Real Madrid's stadium," he said.

"The final in Bucharest against Athletic Bilbao [in the 2011-12 Europa League] was great because we could feel our fans chanting a lot more and that helped us and motivated us.

"I don't know how Lisbon will be, but I have no doubt that our fans will support us and will chant the whole match.

"I think that if they do as they've done in the past it will influence us positively in our match."

Barcelona is another home for Yaya Toure, says agent

    353898_heroa.jpg

Yaya Toure's agent admits that the Manchester City midfielder would consider a return to Barcelona.

Earlier on Tuesday, the player's representative claimed that City had disrespected the Cote d'Ivoire by not wishing him a happy birthday at an event in Abu Dhabi on May 13.

Toure spent three seasons at Barcelona before joining City in July 2010 and Dimitri Seluk maintains that the Spanish club is "another home" for the 31-year-old.

"He is a very professional player and he will work hard for any club he plays for. Every club he has been at he has been one of the best players, if not the best," the agent told talkSPORT.

"It's difficult to say now [where his future lies]; maybe after the World Cup we'll know more about his emotions and the situation.

"But what I do know is that the staff at Barcelona, the players and the fans all like Yaya very much. Barca is one of his former clubs, he had a great time there and it's like another home for him.

"It's obviously the same at Manchester City. The fans love him very much, they understand Yaya is a great player.

"If people don't give us attention we will forget about them and work with other people."

Seluk has claimed that Toure wants to leave City at the end of each of the past two seasons and again believes that it is uncertain whether the midfielder will remain with the Premier League champions this summer.

"Honestly, it's not 100 per cent he will stay at Manchester City, it's better to say 50-50,” he remarked.

"I tell you this is not about cake, more importantly it is about attention. Yaya can buy cake for everybody and it's no problem from him.

"When Yaya is on the pitch he works very hard for the entire 90 minutes. He takes the ball from his own half and runs the entire length of the field and scores beautiful goals. There aren't too many players who can do this.

"He has motivation to play well for City, he fights for City, but he feels he fights for the team and the club forget about him. It's very upsetting for him."

Di Maria: All-Madrid final shows strength of Spanish football

    357736_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria believes that Saturday's Champions League final clash with city rivals Atletico underlines the strength of Spanish football.

Some pundits argued that last year's tournament decider between Bundesliga duo Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund signalled a shift in power within the European game.

However, Di Maria feels the fact that La Liga's finest have reasserted their supremacy this term.

"I think a 'Spanish final' shows the development of Spanish football, the power which it has had in the last few years," the Argentina international told reporters on Monday.

"It is going to be a nice and tough final against Atletico Madrid and we will try our best."

Meanwhile, Di Maria's team-mate, Alvaro Morata, admitted that the game is of special significance to him given that he is a Madrid native.

"I think it is a big joy for Spanish football and for the Madrid region," the striker stated. "I feel so proud, I was born here and it is going to be so nice.

"I think the final will be very competitive. Two teams which have been very good, especially in this competition. Hopefully, we will win."

Liverpool boss Rodgers excited to face off with Van Gaal

    374238_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is excited by the prospect of testing himself against one of the game's greats when Louis van Gaal takes charge of Manchester United next season.

The Dutchman was announced as David Moyes's permanent successor on Monday and brings a wealth of trophy-winning experience with him.

Rodgers is an admirer of Van Gaal's work but registered his disappointment that Moyes was not allowed more time to turn things around at Old Trafford.

"First of all, it was really sad that David Moyes didn't get the opportunity," the Liverpool boss told talkSPORT.

"Obviously, with David gone, they were looking to appoint someone with experience and certainly Van Gaal is someone I have studied and looked at for many years.

"He has had great success and he has a way and a vision of how he wants the game to be played. He works with young players. Certainly his profile fits a club of Manchester United's history.

"As a young manager, I'm really looking forward to working against another great coach in the world game."

Ryan Giggs ended his glorious playing career to take up a position as Van Gaal's assistant and Rodgers paid tribute to the United legend, calling him "an absolute role model on and off the field".

"He has been a phenomenal player," the Northern Irishman enthused. "He's the same age as me, Ryan, and to be playing at that level and to have that mentality to turn up for pre-season knowing you are going to have to work hard, to play the games he has played in ... he's an incredible human being, as well as football player.

"He is the most decorated player. I have huge admiration for him as a footballer. Now he is preparing himself to become a coach and manager and he will be hoping he can go on and have a similar impact."

Falcao to join up with Colombia squad despite World Cup KO rumours

    407254_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao will travel to Colombia's training camp in Argentina next week, despite reports that the striker is poised to rule himself out of the World Cup.

The Monaco ace suffered cruciate ligament damage during a Coupe de France match in January and it has been claimed that the 27-year-old has admitted defeat in his bid to be fit to represent his country in Brazil this summer.

However, Colombia issued a press release on Monday revealing that Falcao, who took part in squad training with his club at the end of the campaign, is still trying to prove his fitness to coach Jose Pekerman.

"Radamel Falcao Garcia will join his team-mates in Buenos Aires," the statement read.

"The Colombian striker is currently continuing his physical work with his club side Monaco."

Pekerman must trim his 29-strong provisional squad to 23 players before June 2 and it has been reported that if Falcao misses out, the forward will join Colombia's coaching staff.

Januzaj excited by Van Gaal arrival at Manchester United

    352899_heroa.jpg

Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj is looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal next season.

Netherlands boss Van Gaal will take over at Old Trafford on a three-year deal following this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Januzaj, who made 34 appearances in all competitions during his breakthrough campaign at United last season, is excited about the club's prospects following a disappointing overall campaign.

"I feel very happy because he’s a great manager," he told reporters. "He's won a lot and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"I think we’re going to have a great future ahead so I’m looking forward to it."

Ryan Giggs was named temporary manager following the sacking of David Moyes in April, and will work alongside Van Gaal as No.2 from next season.

And Januzaj, named in Belgium's preliminary squad for the World Cup at just 19 years of age, praised Giggs for aiding in his development as a player.

"Every time I was playing on the pitch, I was asking Giggsy for advice on how to play and what to do on the pitch," he added.

"He helped me a lot. He was a great player and I have respect for him. It is very important to have someone like him at the club."

Messi: Barcelona accomplished nothing this season

    407717_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi has lamented Barcelona's trophy-less season, admitting that they "accomplished nothing" during the 2013-14 campaign.

The Argentina international, who has just signed a new contract that will see him become the world’s best-paid footballer, has struggled with injuries and relatively poor form over the past 12 months.

However, even as Barca's star player, the four-time Ballon d'Or winner does not feel that he should shoulder the blame for the Catalans' failure to win anything other than the Supercopa de Espana.

"It was a tough year and it has not been the best for me,” Messi admitted to Mundo Deportivo. "A big team [like Barcelona] is obliged to win titles and this year we accomplished nothing.

"It was kind of the whole group, though, not just individuals. But it was a let-down for the whole team."

Messi also argued that Gerardo Martino, who stepped down as coach last weekend, should not be made the scapegoat for Barca's failings, in light of all of the off-the-field, transfer-related controversies the club were forced to deal with.

"It was not easy for Tata [Martino],” he added. “There were things going on in and out of the court.

“We would have liked to have become champions for ourselves and for the manager - he deserved it."

After seeing his side miss out on the Liga title by being held at home by Atletico Madrid in Saturday's title decider, Messi admitted that he is hoping to put Barca's season behind him as quickly as possible so he can focus on helping Argentina win this summer's World Cup.

"I hope that now I can change my head before Brazil," the 26-year-old confessed. "Losing the title on the final day was a heavy blow.

"I will spend a few days with my family and then I’ll think about the Argentina team."

Liverpool & Tottenham in battle for Chelsea left-back Cole

    328038_heroa.jpg

Ashley Cole is a target of Liverpool and Tottenham after revealing he is unlikely to be at Chelsea next season, Goal understands.

The former England left-back, 33, will be one of the most coveted free transfers of the summer as he seeks “another journey in my life” following eight years at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have not completely given up hope of agreeing a new deal with Cole but the player has made it clear that he expects to leave the club.

“I am weighing up my options for playing next season with my agent and sadly it does not look like Chelsea will be one of them,” Cole wrote on Twitter on Monday night.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has made it clear he wants to add more stability to his defence next season and is believed to be weighing up a move for the experienced defender.

Rookie Jon Flanagan is on World Cup stand-by duty this summer after filling in so capably at left-back in the second half of the season but his preferred position is at right-back.

The Merseysiders had been in the market for another proven full-back in Bacary Sagna, 31, but the Arsenal man is on the brink of agreeing a free transfer to Manchester City.

Spurs are also monitoring Cole’s situation as they eye up contenders to fill the team’s problem left-back slot next season.

Former manager Tim Sherwood had included Cole on a shortlist of key summer targets, although the identity of the new Tottenham manager could depend upon whether the Londoners make a concerted bid for the recently-retired England international.

There is also interest in Cole from the MLS, although the player may want to ascertain the interest in the Premier League market before considering a move overseas.

Cole, who retired from international football having been left out of England’s World Cup squad, signalled the end of his Chelsea career with a series of tweets.

He wrote: “Thank u Chelsea FC for making my 8 years there a pleasure to work all the staff and players, we've been through a lot, good and bad.

“And of course the fans, how do I start, I can only say thank u for giving the boys confidence to win some amazing trophies, and once again.

“And this tweet is to the FANS that have stood buy me through thick and thin, I will always have u in my hearts, #cfcfans.

“And now I'll be looking for another journey in my life hope it can be like my others full of fun and of course WIN something.”

He also removed ‘Chelsea and England left-back’ from his Twitter biography.

Cole is a three-time Premier League champion, twice with Arsenal and once with Chelsea, and also has seven FA Cup winners' medals and won the 2008 League Cup.

He was part of Chelsea's Champions League winning team in 2012 and went on to win the Europa League a year later.
