Prandelli signs two-year Italy contract extension

    408548_heroa.jpg

Cesare Prandelli has provided Italy with a pre-World Cup boost by signing a two-year contract extension to remain as Azzurri coach. The 56-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire over the summer and his decision to stay will provide clarity for players and the FIGC as the build-up to Brazil continues.

Prandelli has been in charge since 2010, guiding Italy to the Euro 2012 final two years ago then easing them through World Cup qualifying.Reports suggested he was considering a return to club management but he has had a change of heart and confirmed over the weekend that he was intending to stick with the national set-up until at least the end of Euro 2016.

"At this moment I feel a great satisfaction," Prandelli told ANSA on Saturday.
"I'm proud of the fact that the Italian Football Association has proposed a two-year renewal to me, regardless of the outcome of the World Cup.

"For this reason I have given my full availability."

This summer Prandelli will be hoping to replicate Italy's efforts eight years ago, when they were surprise winners of the 2006 tournament in Germany under Marcello Lippi's guidance.

Gundogan: Germany can win World Cup

    405001_heroa.jpg

Ilkay Gundogan believes Germany have what it takes to go all the way at this summer's World Cup.

Joachim Low's men were eliminated in the semi-finals in South Africa four years ago, but the Borussia Dortmund midfielder feels they could go one step further if everything goes their way in Brazil.

"I believe that the team has a lot of potential and is capable of going very far in Brazil," Gundogan told Goal.

"A lot of people have [relatively] low expectations, but that could prove to be a good thing.

"With a good start and a good result against Portugal, Germany could be on its way to the final. They will have to grow a bit game after game. And anything's possible if you make it to the final."

The 23-year-old will miss the tournament due to a back injury that kept him sidelined all season and he has admitted that not playing at this summer's World Cup is a huge disappointment.

"Of course, it hurts a lot to miss the World Cup," Gundogan confessed. "Especially because it is in Brazil. I also felt confident about my chances of getting playing time.

"I will obviously follow the tournament closely, though, and hope Germany will do well."

Podolski happy to stay at Arsenal

    408204_heroa.jpg

Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski says that he is happy to stay at the club after their FA Cup-winning season.

The German is understood to be one of several players on the edge of the first team who could be allowed to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer but feels that he could still do even better in north London.

After two seasons at the club, Podolski is sure that he made the right choice in joining them from Koln and is keen to hang around.

"As things stand today, I am an Arsenal player [and tomorrow] it won't change," the 28-year-old told reporters.

"Going to London was the right step. I had the chance to go to a big club and to play in the strongest league in the world. I am happy in the city, in the league, in the club. Those two years have been outstanding for me."

Podolski scored 12 goals in 27 appearances for the Gunners in 2013-14 and argues that, if it were not for injury, he would have gone even further.

"If my bad injury hadn't stopped me for almost five months it would have been a better season again," he lamented.

"Nevertheless I am satisfied. In the end, I was a regular starter, scored eight goals and had four assists in the league. It's nothing to sneeze at."

The striker added of their FA Cup triumph: "I am not someone that reduces himself only to the titles he won.

"Lukas Podolski doesn't change just because he won a title but, of course, a title is something awesome - even more if it's in a foreign country and in such an important competition.

"Especially from the aspect that Arsenal hadn't won anything for nine years, this success was something special."

    Tottenham set to appoint Pochettino

    397271_heroa.jpg

Tottenham are expected to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager this week, Goal can reveal.

The Southampton boss has been the favourite for the job since Tim Sherwood was sacked earlier in May and several talks have taken place with intermediaries. A broad agreement over a salary package worth €3.6 million per year is believed to have been reached a week ago.

As of Sunday night, no official approach is understood to have been made to Southampton but the south-coast club are resigned to losing the 42-year-old and braced for Spurs to finally make an official move.

The north Londoners have sounded out other options, including Ajax coach Frank de Boer and Rafael Benitez of Napoli, but club chairman Daniel Levy has been most impressed by Pochettino's philosophy.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was never considered a realistic candidate and the Spanish giants' Champions League triumph on Saturday night confirmed that the Italian will stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Louis van Gaal was initially Tottenham's top target but attention quickly turned to Pochettino once it became clear that the Dutchman was in line to take over at Manchester United.

Spurs' priority has been to find a coach who can get the most out of the existing squad with only a few summer changes after they spent €130 million on new signings last year.

Pochettino's attacking style of football fits in with Levy's ideals while at Southampton he has also shown his ability to introduce and improve academy products.

The Saints finished eighth in the Premier League this season and Pochettino delayed talks over a new contract - his existing deal has one year to run - in anticipation of an approach from White Hart Lane.

Tottenham are aware of the risks associated with a coach who has only taken charge of two mid-ranking clubs in Espanyol and Southampton but the Londoners feel that the Argentine can handle the extra expectation.

Levy is also conscious that, in recent years, he has missed the opportunity to appoint Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez, who have both been highly praised this season following impressive campaigns on Merseyside.

Spurs sacked Andre Villas-Boas in December and then Sherwood at the end of a disappointing season in which they finished sixth and missed out on their target of a top-four finish.

Tottenham are understood to be satisfied with Pochettino's level of English - he has spoken the language to his Southampton players since his first day - but will ask him to stop communicating via an interpreter in press conferences.

Muller: I want Golden Boot again

    411070_heroa.jpg

Germany international Thomas Muller has set his sights on winning the Golden Boot again at this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

The Bayern Munich attacker scored five goals and gave three assists to pip David Villa, Wesley Sneijder and Diego Forlan to the individual award at the 2010 tournament in South Africa and he's keen to become the first player in history to win the trophy twice in a row.

"Subconsciously, defending the Golden Boot at the World Cup is on my mind," Muller was quoted as saying by SID.

"I know that this might not be the most realistic objective, though.

"Nobody has ever done it before and there have been some amazing goalscorers at the World Cup over the years.

"But I will give it my all to meet my objective and perhaps I can help the team with a few goals."

Germany will meet Portugal, Ghana and USA in the group stages at the 2014 World Cup.

AC Milan set to replace Seedorf with Inzaghi

    411617_heroa.jpg

AC Milan are set to replace coach Clarence Seedorf with the Dutchman's former team-mate Filippo Inzaghi, Goal has learned.

The former Netherlands international took over at San Siro in January following the sacking of Massimiliano Allegri and delivered the club to an eighth-placed finish in Serie A.

However, he has not done enough to keep his job after the relationship between coach and board deteriorated during his five-month spell.

Milan have been searching for a replacement, but have been put off their pusuit of Sevilla coach Unai Emery due to the high costs involved.

Club management figures, including owner Silvio Berlusconi and CEO Adriano Galliani, met on Monday afternoon and have decided that Inzaghi is the only viable candidate to train the team next season.

The 40-year-old enjoyed a glittering 11-year spell at the Giuseppe Meazza, winning Serie A and the Champions League twice apiece.

Since his retirement in 2012, he has been in charge of the club's Primavera side and has long been seen as a future coach for the full team.

Berlusconi and Galliani are expected to inform the former Italy of their decision to promote him imminently.

Balotelli: I get treated badly because I'm black

    411206_heroa.jpg

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli believes he gets unfair criticism simply because he is black.

The striker has developed a reputation for being a disruptive figure throughout his career, having made the headlines on several occasions for his involvement in numerous controversial incidents, including training ground bust-ups and disagreements with coaches.

Balotelli fell out with Jose Mourinho at Inter as well as Roberto Mancini during his time with Manchester City. When at City he also let off fireworks in his bathroom the night before facing local rivals Manchester United.

Such behaviour has made him a target, however, and his return to Italy with Milan has been marred by frequent incidents of racist abuse.

The latest came just last week when he was singled out by Italy fans while he trained with the national team at the pre-World Cup base near Florence.

The 23-year-old feels that, because he is black, he is criticised more for his actions than he would be if he were white.

"I make some mistakes and I always pay for them," he told GQ Italy. "But if I were white they would only insult me for the mistakes.

"The problem is not the things that I do but that these things are allowed to happen to me.

"It is only the stupid and the ignorant who take issue with me. I'm different and this annoys people."

mu black nisa neme muge muusala kata nisa
