:shocked:Villa undergoes medical ahead of New York City move

    414388_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid striker David Villa is undergoing a medical in Manchester ahead of a move to New York City FC, Goal understands.

The 32-year-old arrived at the Bridgewater Hospital in Moss Side on Saturday and is in England to complete contract negotiations with Manchester City's Major League Soccer franchise.

Prior to his marquee switch to New York City FC, whose season will start next March, Villa will be able to train with City's first team but will not make an appearance for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Villa scored 13 goals in 36 Primera Division appearances for Atletico Madrid this term and has been named in Vicente del Bosque's final Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup.

He joined Diego Simeone's side from Barcelona in July 2013.

Benatia's weak foot is worth €30m - Sabatini mocks City bid

    413161_heroa.jpg

Mehdi Benatia's weak foot alone is worth €30 million, according to Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini, who values the centre-back at a total of €61m.

After a thoroughly impressive debut season in the Italian capital, the 27-year-old has attracted the attention of several of Europe's top clubs, with Premier League champions Manchester City having tabled a €30m bid for the Morocco international last week.

But Sabatini has claimed Benatia is worth a minimum of €61m, and insisted the defender does not want to leave the Italian capital.

"Benatia is a guy with sound principles: he doesn't want to take a step away from the Roma fans or his team-mates," he told a press conference.

"Personally I think €30m is the value of Benatia's weak foot.

"If Benatia's weak foot is worth €30m then the total price would be €61m."

When pressed on the prospect of Benatia leaving the club, Sabatini claimed that only a huge offer would convince Roma to sell.

“Benatia is not for sale, unless someone comes to us with an offer of €61m,” he added. "With that we could improve the squad."

And Sabatini does not believe the star will press for a transfer, claiming he has "never played for himself" since joining the club from Udinese in 2013.

"Benatia has been completely coherent, he's never played for himself, always with and for the team," he said.

Cesc Fabregas set to leave Barcelona and return to Premier League

    cesc-fabregas-barcelona-manchester-city-etihad-stadium-football-champions-league_3085859.jpg

Barcelona are willing to sell the Spain midfielder as he does not figure in their plans for next season.

It is understood that Fabregas has a £30million release clause written into his contract. The 27-year-old is expected to interest a number of top Premier League teams, including his former club Arsenal.

Manchester United could be another destination following the attempts of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to sign him last summer.Fabregas signed a five-year contract at Barcelona in 2011, the club from which Arsenal snared him as a 16-year-old, describing the move back home as the "greatest challenge of his life".

He scored nine goals in 48 appearances last term but the Catalan side endured a rare trophyless campaign.

Deportivo secure promotion back to La Liga

    414863_heroa.jpg

Deportivo La Coruna sealed an immediate return to La Liga on Saturday as a 1-0 win over Real Jaen earned promotion back to the top flight.

Following their relegation last season, Deportivo have wasted little time in bouncing straight back, with Carlos Marchena's 29th-minute strike proving enough to secure second place in the Segunda Division with one game to go.

Fernando Vazquez's men went into the weekend six points clear of rivals Las Palmas and Sporting Gijon, but with no wins in their previous five matches concerns were beginning to build at the Riazor.

Marchena's strike just before the half hour broke the deadlock, and as news from elsewhere began to filter through it was clear they were up.

Deportivo's match finished before their rivals but the news that Las Palmas had lost to Mallorca and Gijon had drawn with Real Zaragoza meant the celebrations could begin.

The win guarantees them second place, while Depor could still claim top spot if they win the final match of the season against Girona and current leaders Eibar fail to beat Numancia.

Montolivo blow is tough to deal with, admits Prandelli

    414768_heroa.jpg

Italy head coach Cesare Prandelli admits the team is reeling from the injury suffered by Riccardo Montolivo against Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

The AC Milan captain was stretchered off after just eight minutes with what was later confirmed as a broken leg, ruling him out of the World Cup, while his replacement Alberto Aquilani also picked up a knock.

Prandelli says the squad have been left hurt by the incidents at Craven Cottage, where the game finished 0-0, and suggested he could wait until Monday's deadline before finalising his 23-man party for Brazil

"Unfortunately this match was marked by injuries," he was quoted as saying by La Repubblica after the match.

"We were playing pretty well at the beginning of the game, but when two team-mates suffer injuries, it is difficult to speak about patterns of play.

"We will recover and do our assessments before deciding. Maybe we should speed up at bit more when the situation is in our favour, but at the moment we're all stunned and it is hard to absorb.

"On Sunday morning we will go to Florence to do our testing and then decide whether to give you the list immediately or take another day."

Italy play their final World Cup warm-up match against Luxembourg in Verona on Wednesday.

Colombia 2-2 Senegal: Pekerman's men throw away two-goal lead

    414849_heroa.jpg

Colombia coughed up a two-goal lead as they were forced to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw with Senegal in Buenos Aires.

Jose Pekerman's men were all over their west African opponents in the first half of their friendly, and converted their dominance by taking a healthy lead into the interval courtesy of goals to Carlos Bacca and Teofilo Gutierrez.

Senegal's response was emphatic, as they levelled the scores within seven minutes of the restart via goals from Moussa Konate and Cheikh Ndoye - the latter a stunner from range.

Alain Giresse's men had to battle for 24 minutes with 10 men, though, as midfielder Ibrahima Seck was sent off for picking up a second yellow card, but despite their numerical advantage, Colombia could not capitalise and have now gone three games without a win.

Among those starting for Colombia was wing-back Camilo Zuniga, who had played just 49 minutes for Serie A side Napoli since undergoing knee surgery in October.

Bacca's back-post header from a Colombia corner found Gutierrez right in the goalmouth in the 11th minute, and he had an easy tap-in to convert their early dominance of possession.

There was more danger for the west African nation moments later, with midfielder Seck conceding a foul on Zuniga on the edge of the area, however, Juan Quintero's effort bounced wide of the target.

Colombia were looking dangerous on the counter-attack, with multiple Senegal corners turning into forays forward for the South American nation.

And Colombia would double their lead just prior to half-time, when Victor Ibarbo got on the end of a long ball, centred a pass for Bacca, who lashed home an effort high into the net to send them into the break with all the momentum.

Senegal had a couple of shots from range in the final 10 minutes of the half, but none that had Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon too concerned.

However, the African side would be level just seven minutes into the second half, after a barrage on Colombia's goal.

Pekerman made four half-time substitutions - one of which being Zuniga - and it seemed to unsettle the world's fifth-ranked nation.

Konate made Colombia pay for conceding possession in their won half as he ran onto Mohamed Daf's through ball to calmly slot the ball past Mondragon's left hand.

That was followed by Ndoye's thumping effort from outside the area, with his 52nd-minute shot giving Mondragon no chance.

Senegal were all over the World Cup-bound Colombians and Zargo Toure almost put them ahead - only denied by a diving Mondragon, who parried to safety.

Giresse's men were down to 10, though, when Seck received a second yellow for a raised foot on second-half substitute Alexander Meija.

Quintero's 74th-minute free-kick went over the bar as Colombia pressed for a winner before sub Jackson Martinez - who came on for Bacca - saw his shot deflected wide for a corner.

Colombia continued to press in the closing stages but could not break down the Senegalese defence despite long spells of possession.

Immobile: I will play for Dortmund

    414770_heroa.jpg

Ciro Immobile insists he will be a Borussia Dortmund player next season as he moves closer to a transfer from Torino.

The 24-year-old, who was top scorer in Serie A last season with 22 goals, has long been linked with a summer switch to Jurgen Klopp's side, with Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirming earlier this week that talks between the clubs had been "promising."

Speaking after Italy's 0-0 draw with Republic of Ireland, Immobile insisted that he simply needs to put pen to paper on a contract with the Bundesliga runners-up before he can officially secure the move.

"It is done, I told you some time ago," he told RAI Sport. "Now I'm just waiting to put my signature on the contract."

AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo suffered a broken leg in the clash at Craven Cottage, ruling him out of the World Cup and Immobile admits the whole squad has been shaken by the blow.

"It was a friendly game," he continued. "We are sorry for Montolivo, we know how much he wanted to be with us. We hope he can come back soon.

"I was excited to debut as a starter. We had heavy legs, but we are working hard."

Van Gaal: Netherlands should have scored more against Ghana

    414778_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal bemoaned the Netherlands' profligacy despite their 1-0 friendly win over Ghana in Rotterdam on Saturday.

Robin van Persie scored the only goal of the match in the fifth minute on the day Van Gaal confirmed his 23-man squad for the World Cup.

But the national coach, who will take charge at Manchester United after the tournament, expressed disappointment at his side's failure to build on that early lead, despite having numerous opportunities to find the net.

"We are too careless with the ball at times," he is quoted as telling SBS 6.

"In the first half, there were many opportunities for us to create opportunities, but we have not taken advantage of them.

"We have created and scored a brilliant goal, but it should have been 3-0. We had another two fantastic attacks."

While feeling his side could have done more going forward, Van Gaal - who is set to employ a five-man defence in Brazil - felt his side were faultless in restricting the threat of Ghana at the other end.

"In the second half we created nothing, but at the same time we gave absolutely nothing away," he added.

"That goes for both the first and the second half and this is the advantage of the system we are using."

Netherlands meet Wales in Amsterdam on Wednesday in their final pre-World Cup warm-up fixture.

Mexico 3-1 Ecuador: Montes suffers injury as Herrera's men seal comfortable win

    414808_heroa.jpg

Luis Montes' World Cup dream could is over after he suffered a serious-looking injury having scored in Mexico's 3-1 win over Ecuador.

The Leon midfielder, who won the Apertura and Clausura titles in the 2013-14 Liga MX campaign, netted a stunning goal just past the half-hour mark but was carried off the field before half-time.

The 28-year-old, named in Mexico's 23-man squad in early May, lunged into a challenge with Segundo Castillo and both were hurt as their shins collided, with Montes needing several minutes of treatment before he was taken off on a stretcher in clear distress with what was later confirmed as a broken right leg.

Marco Fabian and a Maximo Banguera own goal extended Mexico's lead after the break at a packed AT&T Stadium on Saturday, with substitute Enner Valencia scoring for Ecuador late on.

But it was the injury to Montes, rather than Ecuador's consolation, that will have overshadowed the game for Mexico coach Miguel Herrera, who maintained his unbeaten run at the helm.

There were happier scenes before the game as defender Andres Guardado was presented with a trophy to mark his 100th appearance for his country, the 10th Mexican to achieve the feat.

A series of long-range free-kicks were the only openings to punctuate an otherwise tame first 30 minutes as both sides were guilty of playing loose passes in the final third.

Giovani dos Santos was the first to fire a set-piece over the crossbar in the fourth minute, while Jorge Guagua was also wayward with his 27th-minute effort.

But Montes provided the first moment of genuine quality as he collected Rafael Marquez's pass before arrowing a superb strike past goalkeeper Banguera from 20 yards.

His night turned sour just a few minutes later, though, in a challenge that also led to Castillo being withdrawn from the action.

Montes was guilty of mistiming his tackle and, while he looks almost certain to miss the trip to Brazil if reports of a suspected fracture are confirmed, Castillo may also be a doubt for Reinaldo Rueda's yet-to-be-finalised squad.

Some of Montes' team-mates were visibly upset by the incident and the match was understandably subdued for a while after the interval, with Marquez also having to be taken off with an apparent foot injury.

To their credit, Mexico found their rhythm after a slow start to the second half and, after Paul Aguilar cleared from underneath his own crossbar, they doubled their lead in the 69th minute courtesy of Fabian's dipping effort from well outside the box.

Banguera then made a mess of trying to keep out Dos Santos' tame shot seven minutes later, the ball coming back off the post and going in via the goalkeeper to make it 3-0.

Valencia's deflected free kick gave Ecuador something to cheer, but there was also plenty to ponder for Rueda with a friendly against England to come before their World Cup campaign begins with a Group E clash against Switzerland on June 15.

Mexico, meanwhile, are likely to need to draft in one of their standby players before next week's friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Portugal, with group-stage clashes versus Cameroon, Brazil and Croatia to follow.

Verratti passes World Cup audition and will be vital in absence of Montolivo

    414720_heroa.jpg

When one door closes, another opens. That is the message to be taken by Italy following this penultimate World Cup tune-up against Ireland. Riccardo Montolivo, captain for the night and trusted lieutenant of Cesare Prandelli, lasted only eight minutes of this entertaining 0-0 draw before a heavy challenge by Alex Pearce left his World Cup dreams shattered. Alberto Aquilani didn't fare much better but his subsequent substitution - by way of concussion - was precautionary.

Instead, Montolivo's injury will push Marco Verratti up the pecking order and will help subtract a few digits from that 30 he is currently sporting on his back. The PSG man, highly regarded though he is, was no sure bet to go to Brazil with the Azzurri but Montolivo's injury may well have painted Prandelli into a corner. What might have been seen a luxury will now be considered a necessity. Italy are light on numbers as a result of the AC Milan man's injury and Verratti proved himself to be the ideal understudy for Andrea Pirlo.

Prandelli has been unusually reluctant to use the 21-year-old but his performance against Ireland was probably as well as he has played for the senior side. There were occasions on which he and his midfield colleagues, including the vastly more experienced Claudio Marchisio and Thiago Motta, were overrun by a wholly-committed Irish team and in those moments Verratti could not stem the tide. Motta, and Gabriel Paletta, were guilty of surrendering possession in dangerous areas at the start of the second half and had Shane Long been more clinical then Ireland would have taken the lead.

    414757_heroa.jpg

CHANGING OF THE GUARD? Verratti stands over the stricken Montolivo

Jeff Hendrick and David Meyler in particular demonstrated that the lithe midfielder has plenty of growing to do with their steaming charges past him towards goal. Nonetheless, with the ball at his feet or with a team-mate looking for an out-ball, Verratti was unsurpassed in blue. He is calm in possession; he never fails to trust his technique to conjure a method of escape from a tight spot. The Ireland midfield and defence, in the first half in particular, was well organised and so chances for the Italians were tough to come by. But it was Verratti who sought the runs of Ciro Immobile over the top.

On the subject of the soon-to-be Borussia Dortmund forward, he must learn to vary his game before the World Cup kicks off if he is to stand any chance of dislodging Mario Balotelli from the starting line-up. On this evidence, he is a long way away. Too often, Immobile was content to have the ball played over the heads of the Irish defence and test himself in a foot race against the centre-backs and the goalkeeper. It did not come off. He did have the ball in the net at one stage before his early departure but he was flagged offside following Matteo Darmian's cross-cum-shot. With Giuseppe Rossi dropping into the gaps behind the front line, Italy need more intelligent movement and better options to make the ball stick.

If this encounter can be seen as a sparring match for the England game in Manaus on June 14 then Italy will have learned plenty. Ireland play a style under Martin O'Neill which is not a million miles from that of Roy Hodgson and Prandelli will be concerned at the incursions made up the flanks by the Irish. That said, Darmian gave as good as he got. Seamus Coleman and even Stephen Ward left their midfield markers trailing to double up on the Italian defence and put balls into the box. If Ireland had more capable finishers then it might not have been scoreless.

Issues at centre-back for the Azzurri, too, are unresolved. Paletta was ill at ease at times, giving up needless chances with lax play, while Leonardo Bonucci was given an uncomfortable physical examination by the bullish Shane Long. Prandelli will be glad to have Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli to call upon because the jury is still out on the Argentine-born Parma man. Daniele De Rossi was sprung into action too to allow the coach to flirt with a three-man backline with Ignazio Abate at right wing-back.

All in all this will have given Prandelli plenty of food for thought. One thing should be clear in his mind, however, and that is that Verratti is worthy of his call-up. As an out-and-out replacement for Montolivo, he is unsuitable for that duty but in the searing heat, he can do enough to grant Pirlo a break without dropping Italian quality on the ball.

Sweden 0-2 Belgium: Hazard answers doubters in comfortable win

    415320_heroa.jpg

Eden Hazard quelled doubts over his fitness by scoring in Belgium's 2-0 win over Sweden on Sunday.

A knee injury had meant Hazard was doubtful for the contest at Solna's Friends Arena, causing some concern for Belgium supporters with their World Cup opener against Algeria just over two weeks away.

But the Chelsea winger put those worries aside, his 79th-minute strike adding to Romelu Lukaku's effort as Marc Wilmots' claimed a solid victory.

Hazard was withdrawn immediately after his goal, with Wilmots no doubt relieved to see his star man come through unscathed, and prove he had an eye for goal.

The head coach would also have taken great heart from Lukaku's goal, as he found the net with a stunning controlled finish from range to follow up his hat-trick against Luxembourg earlier this week.

A complete performance against a worthy Sweden side - albeit one without star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was on the bench - was capped by a clean sheet, with skipper Vincent Kompany immense throughout.

The hosts - who failed in their efforts to qualify for the World Cup when beaten by Portugal in a memorable play-off - initially enjoyed the upper hand, almost taking the lead when Erkan Zengin side-footed just over the crossbar.

Yet Belgium responded well and began attacking with purpose. They came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when Kevin De Bruyne's precise curling effort rattled the goal frame.

It was all one-way traffic thereafter, with Kompany narrowly volleying over after meeting Dries Mertens' corner.

Belgium did not have to wait much longer for an opener, Lukaku collecting 25 yards from goal, curling a powerfully beyond Andreas Isaksson.

It was only thanks to a superb stop from Isaksson that Sweden did not find themselves 2-0 down, the ‘keeper getting down low to keep out Daniel Van Buyten's point-blank header, Mertens again the provider with a deep cross.

Any favour Mertens had gained with Wilmots from this contributions was almost extinguished moments later, the winger fortunate to stay on the pitch following a rash two-footed lunge.

Perhaps spurred on by a sense of injustice, Sweden pressed forward at the end of the half, but were found wanting with their final ball against a resolute Belgian defence.

Sweden were unable to carry that momentum into the second period as Kompany again just missed the target from a Mertens set-piece.

Unwilling to give up, Erik Hamren's showed some attacking intent of their own, indeed, Thibaut Courtois' goal was under siege for long periods towards the end, Jimmy Durmaz hitting the woodwork with a vicious strike.

But any hopes Sweden had of getting something from the game were extinguished when Hazard slid beyond Isaksson late on for the clinching goal.

France 1-1 Paraguay: Griezmann strike not enough for Les Bleus

    415266_heroa.jpg

Antoine Griezmann's first international goal was not enough for France as they were held 1-1 by Paraguay on Sunday.

The Real Sociedad forward, winning only his third cap, looked to have secured a fourth successive victory for France with an 82nd-minute strike in Nice.

However, there was still time for Paraguay to level through a header from captain Victor Caceres, denying Deschamps' men another success ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Deschamps, who was still without the injured Franck Ribery, saw his men start with plenty of energy, the front three of Loic Remy, Olivier Giroud and Mathieu Valbuena all keen to run at the Paraguay defence with the ball at their feet.

Remy however, was guilty of wasting several good opportunities in the first half.

His first sight of goal came as early as the fourth minute, but it was a neat link-up with Giroud in the 18th minute that nearly brought an opener.

The Arsenal striker met a high ball into the penalty area and cushioned a header into the path of Remy, but his strike partner was unable to control his volley from 12 yards out.

Paul Pogba shone in midfield for France, showing energy and agility as they dominated proceedings, and the 21-year-old Juventus midfielder sent two low shots fizzing wide of Antony Silva's goal.

At the other end, Hugo Lloris was rarely tested and when Paraguay did play balls into the penalty area, the France goalkeeper dealt with them comfortably.

Lloris also began a move just after the half-hour mark that led to another chance for Remy.

The ‘keeper's ball found Giroud on the right and, after beating two defenders, the striker played a cross into Remy, whose acrobatic effort flew agonisingly wide.

Having kept out France, or more accurately Remy during the first 45 minutes, Paraguay started the second half with a renewed impetus and brought the first save of note out of Lloris. After Bacary Sagna had brought down Caceres, the Tottenham goalie got down well to save Miguel Samudio's free-kick.

That was enough of a wake-up call to bring France back to life and Silva was again on hand to deny Giroud on two occasions from accurate Valbuena crosses.

With time running out France, who sorely missed Ribery's creativity, continued to apply pressure and were finally rewarded as Griezmann curled home a shot that may have taken a slight deflection on its way to goal, after Silva had saved well from Giroud.

However, the hosts were denied victory in the final minutes when Caceres met a Jorge Rojas cross, glancing a header past Lloris, although he may feel he should could have done better.

France will now hope for positive news regarding Ribery, who is a reported doubt for the World Cup as he continues to battle a back problem.

Germany 2-2 Cameroon: Hosts pegged back by Choupo-Moting in thrilling climax

    415291_heroa.jpg

Germany were held to a 2-2 draw by Cameroon in a match that caught fire in the closing 30 minutes after a dull opening hour.

Samuel Eto'o's strike kick started the game after a rather tepid beginning, though when Thomas Muller and Andre Schurrle replied for the hosts it seemed they would claim victory. However, Mainz's Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting found a leveller for the African side.

Coach Joachim Low named a strong XI that included the likes of Marco Reus, Mesut Ozil and Mario Gotze but saw his side struggle to find top gear at Borussia Park.

Cameroon boss Volke Finke will have enjoyed the return to his homeland, where he managed Freiburg for 16 years, although Low and Germany look far from the finished product on the evidence of Sunday's encounter.

The hosts made a lively start and Ozil should have scored within the first minute but could only slip Sami Khedira's pass wide of Charles Itandje's right-hand post.

Itandje then tipped Gotze's strike onto the woodwork before Eto'o, rested for Cameroon's last two friendlies, had the visitors' first effort on target.

However, a number of minor fouls stopped either side from getting into full flow, with the dangerous Reus next to test Itandje before Khedira failed to connect with a cross from the left.

Cameroon could have stolen ahead before the break when Eto'o played in Benjamin Moukandjo, but the Nancy forward saw his prodded effort well saved by Weidenfeller.

Having finished the first half strongest, Cameroon were under threat early in the second half as Reus flashed an effort wide of goal.

However, captain Eto'o, preparing for his fourth World Cup, initially forced a save from Weidenfeller before following up at the second attempt after Choupo-Moting had cut the loose ball back across goal.

Their joy was short-lived, however, as Bayern midfielder Muller headed in the equaliser after good work from clubmate Jerome Boateng on the right. Five minutes later Lukas Podolski, appearing suspiciously offside, broke free down the left and squared for substitute Schurrle to stab the ball home.

However, parity was restored in the 78th minute. Mainz man Choupo-Moting, who was born in Germany, saw his fine goalscoring run continue, finding the net for a third consecutive friendly.

Choupo-Moting broke into the German penalty area from the left to send a low, angled shot beyond Weidenfeller to gain Cameroon a draw and leave Low with a few question marks ahead of Friday's final friendly with Armenia.

United States continued their good form ahead of the World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Turkey on Sunday.

Jurgen Klinsmann's men overcame a stern test from a dangerous Turkish side, building on Wednesday's 2-0 success over Azerbaijan with another impressive win.

Turkey wasted a number of openings in an entertaining game at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, and their failings in front of goal proved pivotal as the hosts held on despite a late rally from Fatih Terim's charges.

The US will now face Nigeria on Saturday in Jacksonville before opening their World Cup campaign against Ghana on June 16.

In the opening exchanges, it was Turkey who created the first chance after 11 minutes as they almost capitalised on some sloppy United States defending, Nuri Sahin curling an effort off the outside of the post from just inside the area.

Jozy Altidore netted four minutes later, only for the strike to be disallowed for a foul in the box.

Turkey continued to have the better of the early play and should have taken the lead when midfielder Inan fired high and wide when he really should have been hitting the target.

And the visitors were made to pay for their profligacy in the 26th minute as Klinsmann's side opened the scoring.

Johnson surged at the heart of the Turkey defence before laying the ball off for Michael Bradley, who then lofted an exquisite pass into the path of the Hoffenheim man who scored with a confident low finish.

Chances dried up in the latter part of the first half, but the United States were gifted a second goal shortly after the interval.

Turkey defender Hakan Balta failed to deal with a low cross into the box from Brad Davis, presenting attacking midfielder Dempsey with the simple task of tapping in from point-blank range.

Terim's side were consistently wasteful in front of goal as they spurned a number of opportunities to get back into the game.

Gokhan Gonul was denied by a fine save at the near post from USA reserve goalkeeper Brad Guzan, before Mustafa Pektemek lashed another effort wide. Turkey did finally find a way through, Selcuk Inan converting from the spot late on after Geoff Cameron had handled Pektemek's strike on the line.

However, Turkey could not complete a comeback in injury time, leaving Klinsmann and his squad to enjoy a morale-boosting victory.

    Maxwell: Brazil comes first

    415201_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain left-back Maxwell says host nation Brazil will only be thinking about themselves when the World Cup kicks off in 11 days time.

For regardless of the opposition, the former Barcelona defender says the Selecao have to concentrate on their own game throughout if they are to have any chance of collecting a sixth World Cup.

“We’ll only have great teams (in the tournament),” said the 32-year-old left back. “Eight previous world champions will be in play, but we have to think about our first three group opponents first: Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon.

“But it all comes down to us. It all comes down to how we will behave once we get on the pitch,” admitted Maxwell, who says Brazil are in a good place, with home advantage, a settled squad and an excellent coach in Felipe Scolari.

“The trust and relationship between the group and the coach is great,” said Maxwell, fresh from a season in which he helped PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

“It’s important to have a staff with such experience. And we have been trying to profit from the motivation the people give us.

“Let’s try to do our best on the pitch, with energy and dedication. This is what matter the most right now.”

Maxwell, however, might not be one of those immediately on the pitch. The man who has won league titles in Holland, Italy, Spain and latterly France, finds himself behind Real Madrid’s left-sided defender Marcelo in Scolari’s vision.

But the 32-year-old says he hasn’t given up on playing in front of a home audience this summer, even if Marcelo may take some moving.

“I know that Marcelo got the place. It’s hard to imagine that I could get my place during the World Cup, but if the chance comes, Felipao knows he can count on me.”

He added; “I have built my career in Europe, so I have been trying to get the people’s trust.

“The important thing is trying to add something here, to be acknowledged. It will come in time, you can’t force this kind of thing, (but) I have an unique opportunity to win an unique competition. That’s what I’m aiming for here.”

And Maxwell acknowledges he is fortunate to be part of the current group, representing Brazil on home soil in the game’s biggest competition.

“It’s hard to see some fellow players who are going to miss the World Cup. The important thing is to work well, and try to prevent any setbacks.

“And, when the matches come, to be 100 per cent focused and forget any problems. We have been doing our part on trying to prevent some situations, and getting in better shape physically.”
