Gerrard pulls out of England training with groin problem

    418870_heroa.jpg

Roy Hodgson is sweating on the fitness of Steven Gerrard ahead of Saturday's opening World Cup clash with Italy after the England captain left training early with a tight groin.

Gerrard departed midway through an open session at England's training camp in Urca military base shortly after completing a couple of light jogs away from the rest of the squad.

The Liverpool captain was not limping and showed no obvious signs of discomfort, but his early withdrawal will still be a cause for concern for Hodgson as he makes his final plans for Saturday's Group D opener in Manaus.

The rest of the England squad appeared in good spirits as they undertook their first training session at Urca, a picturesque location situated at the foot of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Sugar Loaf mountain.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the only other member of the group to train on his own as he completed several light and medium jogs while wearing a knee brace.

The Arsenal youngster limped out of England's friendly clash with Ecuador on Wednesday with a knee injury, but a subsequent scan showed he had sustained no significant ligament damage.

    Ancelotti: Casillas is staying put

    418631_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti says Iker Casillas will not leave Real Madrid this season.

The 33-year-old was been demoted to the bench in the league this season, losing out on the number one spot to Diego Lopez but remained first choice for the Champions League as the Spanishi giants went on to win a tenth European crown.

As a result of being second in line for the majority of games, Casillas has been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, but Ancelotti insists he is staying put.

"We haven't thought about this because once we won the final, everyone went on holiday," he told reporters. "Casillas is very happy to stay here, and we're happy that he's staying."

Ancelotti also admitted that 21-year-old Alvaro Morata could go out on loan for a season. The youngster was forced to settle for a place on the bench this season, something Ancelotti admits was a source of frustration for the youngster.

Arsene Wenger has been constantly linked with a move for the Spaniard and it was revealed in January that the north Londoners had turned their attention to Morata as a deal for Julian Draxler evaporated.

"If he could find the chance of playing it would be good that he had the chance for a year," Ancelotti said.

"If Morata goes then we'll have to think about signing a similar striker with the same characteristics, a youngster."

The 54-year-old also shed some light on other transfer rumours, insisting that Angel Di Maria is loved by Madrid and says there is no great need for midfield reinforcements this summer because of Sami Khedira's return to fitness.

"I think that Di Maria knows everyone loves him. The boss loves him, the club does and so do the fans. I think he knows this.

"I think we've got to remember that this season we were without Khedira, who has recovered well and will be back with us. The level of the central midfielders will improve with his return. Then we'll see. He's a great player."

Low: I enjoy the pressure of coaching Germany

    419433_heroa.jpg

Joachim Low has revealed he enjoys the pressure that comes with coaching Germany but admits that no amount of preparation will guarantee success at the World Cup.

Low will take charge for Germany’s fourth international tournament in a row as the side attempt to end their 18-year title drought in Brazil. The 54-year-old possesses a better win-loss ratio than any of his predecessors dating back to 1978, which has resulted in Germany reaching two semi-finals and one final in their last three tournaments.

And Low has revealed that his past successes in charge of the national side have helped ease any anxieties ahead of the World Cup in Brazil.“The closer we get to a tournament, the calmer I become because I know that we've thought of everything, and I have faith in that. I'm now able to deal with high-pressure situations very well and I even enjoy them actually,” Low told FIFA.

“I'm looking forward to our warm-up games, to every training session and to everything Brazil has in store for us. Experiencing a World Cup in the world's most football-crazy country is as good as it gets, for the players, coaches and fans.”
Despite his meticulous nature, Low admits that no amount of preparation will guarantee success for his team in Brazil.

“There are several things you can plan in advance, such as fitness levels, movement and tactics, but you can only plan for success up to a certain point. We can lay the foundations and that increases the probability of achieving something,” Low said.
“In sporting terms it [their training camp] was very good but even the best training camp cannot guarantee success, let alone guarantee that you'll win the World Cup.”Germany have a tough opening World Cup match as they play Portugal in Salvador on June 16.

However, Low hopes his side’s commitment to the cause will help increase their chances of winning the tournament this summer – although he refused to give his team a target to achieve.

“I have absolute faith in the abilities of every one of them. I know what we're capable of and I know we've got a chance, but I'm not a prophet and it's not my job to be,” he said.“Even if I were to promise that we'd win the title that's still no guarantee that we would do so.

“The only thing I can say is that we want to win the World Cup. We'll give everything and we want to play with heart and passion to give our fans something to cheer about.

“I can't say we will win the World Cup, though.”

Agent dismisses Arda Turan to Barcelona reports

    419687_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan is not close to switching to La Liga rivals Barcelona this summer and is “happy” with at the Vicente Calderon.

The Turkey international has been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital this summer with several clubs said to be interested in the 27-year-old’s services.

Recent reports stated that Barcelona were willing to pay Arda's €24m buyout clause despite the midfielder only signing a new contract in September last year, which will keep him at the club until 2017.

However, the player's agent Ahmet Bulut has stressed that his player is happy at Spanish champions Atletico and does not want a move away from the Madrid-based club."What has been published and has been put in my mouth is false. Barça have not contacted me about Arda and the player is happy at Atletico," Bulut was quoted as saying in Mundo Deportivo.

The rumours surfaced after Bulut was spotted in Barcelona, but the agent explained he was there to negotiate with a German side over a move for one of his players currently in Serie A.

    Immobile: Play me against England

    419680_heroa.jpg

Italy striker Ciro Immobile has called on coach Cesare Prandelli to play him alongside Mario Balotelli against England on Saturday. The 24-year-old scored a hat trick and set up two other goals as Italy beat Brazilian club Fluminense 5-3 in World Cup warm-up game on Sunday.

Immobile, who recently joined Borussia Dortmund after finishing the season as Serie A's top scorer with Torino last season, is now hoping his rich vein of form will result in him starting Italy’s first Group D match."If I play on Saturday, [the coach] will exclusively decide, I accept all his choices. If we play Balotelli, it will mean that he felt it right. I can only do my best and carve out my space."

He added: "I think I can play along with Balotelli, but I do not make the decisions. Prandelli decides and his choices are not discussed."I'm a striker and obviously I live to score. I'm happy with my performance, it seems obvious to me [to play]."

Italy open up their World Cup campaign against England in Manaus on Saturday before facing Costa Rica and Uruguay as the Azzurri attempt to progress from one of the tournament’s toughest groups.

Suarez: Uruguay must respect England's young guns

    393302_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez believes that Uruguay must be careful when they take on England at the World Cup despite the Three Lions' inexperienced squad.

Suarez, who is recovering from a knee operation and is hopeful of playing a full part in Brazil, could come face-to-face with a number of his Premier League counterparts when Uruguay face Roy Hodgson's side in Sao Paulo on June 19.

And he feels that the youthful nature of Hodgson's squad will give them an extra edge during the tournament, though he still feels they have issues in defence.

"England have a nice mix of experience of youth this time. In previous years there were players who were maybe a bit past their best," he told The Guardian.

"Now there are players coming through with hunger to succeed. We have to be very careful.

"But, they do have weaknesses at the back and I know what they are. I won't be saying that in the paper but in the Uruguay squad I will."

Though the Liverpool striker believes there are issues in England's back line, he also feels that left-back Leighton Baines is one of the better players in Hodgson's squad.

The Everton defender has caught Suarez's eye and feels that he could prove a pivotal figure when the two sides meet.

"Baines is a player I like a lot. His focus is more defensive than attacking but he has got the best left foot in the Premier League.

"He's spectacular. He has a lot of quality, he strikes the ball very well and, with good players around him, England can benefit from that. We have to be very careful."

Suarez has also noted speculation surrounding the form of Wayne Rooney within the media, but he feels the Manchester United striker will be able to thrive with more responsibility on his shoulders.

"Rooney has that will to win and this is a good chance for him. I read Hodgson saying that people were piling responsibility onto him.

"It is good that he has the responsibility but not pressure. He has a lot of good players around him."

The World Cup offers Suarez the chance to come face-to-face with a number of his team-mates from Anfield, with Rickie Lambert's transfer to the Merseyside outfit meaning there are now six representatives from Brendan Rodgers' side in the England squad.

And the 27-year-old admits he was pleased to see his club-mates gain recognition for their fine showings in the Premier League.

"A World Cup is always different but my team-mates are playing very well and they could play a similar role for England as they have for Liverpool.

"I was particularly pleased when I heard that Raheem [Sterling] and Jordan [Henderson] were in the squad.

"A year ago there were some people who didn't rate them and now, because they played so well this season, they've been called up."

    Mandzukic: I'm leaving Bayern

    419773_heroa.jpg

Mario Mandzukic has confirmed he will leave Bayern Munich as a result of his failure to adapt to Pep Guardiola's tactics.

Mandzukic has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, after his future with the Bundesliga giants came under scrutiny following the signing of Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Croatia international - a regular former boss Jupp Heynckes - was in and out of the side last season and ended the campaign by being dropped for the DFB Pokal final victory over Dortmund.

The 28-year-old striker has now confirmed he is leaving Bayern, and pointed to Guardiola's possession-based style as the primary factor behind that decision.
Mandzukic also revealed he had a meeting with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in early May, telling the Bayern chief he wanted a move.

"At Bayern it was fantastic. It's a fantastic club. Indeed, until recently I didn't even think about leaving, and especially that it would happen now," he told Sportske novosti."Let's be honest, the style Guardiola wants at Bayern doesn't suit me.

"In the first leg against Real in Madrid (in the Champions League), I definitely understood, no matter how much I try, I can't get the best out of myself with this style."When it's like that, I don't feel good and it's best for everyone that we part.
"Thanks to the club who offered a contract extension, thanks to Guardiola, who is a great coach, and I wish everyone all the best for the future.

"Bayern and their fans will always be the most beautiful and most emotional story of my career. The time has come for new challenges."Mandzukic refused to say where his next challenge would be as he prepares to represent Croatia at the World Cup.

He is suspended for Thursday's tournament opener against Brazil, but is sure to face Cameroon and Mexico in Group A.

England must wait for World Cup glory, says Owen

    411644_heroa.jpg

Michael Owen feels England will have to wait longer before their time comes at a World Cup.

The former striker, who retired at the end of the 2012-13 season, was part of three World Cup campaigns for his country, in 1998, 2002 and 2006, where England were knocked out at the last 16 and twice in the quarter-final stages.

Argentina accounted for England’s exit at France '98 in a penalty shoot-out, while eventual winners Brazil came from behind after Owen had opened the scoring in the quarter-finals in Japan four years later.

England then once again tasted shoot-out heartache at Germany 2006, when Portugal held their nerve to eliminate Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men.

And former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United striker Owen believes his country could have achieved more in those tournaments, while seemingly ruling out any chance of them lifting the trophy in Brazil.

"In 1998 we had a strong team. It was totally different four years later, but we still had a strong team. We had what everyone called the golden generation and we had some cracking players," he told Perform.

"But as we all know in a World Cup, you get one shot at it - knockout football. Sometimes the best team doesn’t win.

"That's not to say we were the best team but we were better than Argentina when we got knocked out in 1998. We had to defend for an hour with 10 men and got beaten on penalties.

"Granted, we were not as good as Brazil when we got knocked out in Japan. It’s all ifs, buts and whys and everything else but no, we certainly had a strong team over those years.

"The current England team is probably not quite as strong. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that we can start unearthing some more top players to go and take us to these tournaments with a chance again."

Owen - who won 89 caps for his country, scoring 40 goals - burst onto the international scene as an 18-year-old with a stunning solo goal in the game against Argentina in Saint-Etienne 15 years ago.

Prior to that, the 2001 Ballon d’Or winner became his county’s youngest-ever scorer at the World Cup with an equaliser in their group-stage defeat to Romania.

He has fond memories of his first experience of World Cup football and attributed his fearless attitude at the tournament to the precociousness of youth.

"The best years of your life are when you are young," he explained. "You aren’t scared of anyone. You think you're going to rule the world. You think you can score goals against anyone.

"It’s certainly how I felt and I went into the World Cup knowing that if I had a chance I would score. That wasn’t brashness. It wasn’t arrogance.

"I didn't tell people that - I just felt it. It didn't feel like a big deal. It was what I was meant to do, that's what I’m here to do, that's what I can do and that's what I've done."
