Cannavaro: I'm ready for Italy job

    392094_heroa.jpg

Former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro says he is ready to take over as national team coach following their World Cup disappointment.

Cesare Prandelli offered his resignation on Tuesday and Italian FA [FIGC] president Giancarlo Abete also quit after the Azzurri crashed out in the group stage with a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay in Natal.

Cannavaro, who captained Italy to World Cup glory in 2006, admits he could not turn down an offer to replace Prandelli but the former Juventus stalwart says the country's football authorities are facing tough decisions.

"Of course it would be a great honour for me to be the manager of my national team, but I don't know," Cannavaro told ITV.

"Right now the Federation want to change the president, the coach... It would be difficult.

    "I'm ready, but I don't know. We'll wait.

"I could not say no but I don't know what they want to do, what they want for the future. Now I think is a very important moment for our federation."

Italy finished third in Group D after victory over England and defeats against Costa Rica and Uruguay.

Barcelona reach agreement for Claudio Bravo

    425727_heroa.jpg

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Real Sociedad over the transfer of Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

The 31-year-old – who is currently at the World Cup with his national side – is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Spanish giants although Barcelona have not revealed his transfer fee.

Bravo - who has started all three of Chile’s World Cup matches so far - will join the Catalan team after the tournament in Brazil.

The goalkeeper will add further depth to Barcelona’s options in that department after the club signed shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Borussia Monchengladbach in May.

Bravo's recruitment will come as welcome news to Barcelona fans following the departures of Victor Valdes – who left his boyhood club after the expiration of his contract this summer – and Jose Manuel Pinto, who was not offered a new deal.

Bravo, who has spent the last eight seasons playing for Sociedad, came through Chilean outfit Colo-Colo's youth system, where he made his first-team debut in 2002 aged 19.Standing at 1.85m tall, Bravo has played the the second-most matches for any non-Spanish national in San Sebastian and is the third most-capped goalkeeper in Sociedad’s history.

He is best known for his calm demeanour between the posts, his agility and his leadership skills as well as his goal against Gimnastic de Tarragona in 2010.

Ronaldo goes to barber of Brazil

    428838_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has gambled with Portugal's World Cup future by sporting a new haircut in the hopes it can help to inspire the side to victory.

The Real Madrid attacker has ditched the zig-zag haircut he sported in the Seleccao's close shave with USA, when his curler of a cross in the dying moments of their second group game helped to keep the team in the tournament.

Ronaldo, who has been struggling for full fitness since arriving in Brazil, turned up to training on Wednesday having clearly gone to the barbers since Paulo Bento's side picked up their first point after being chopped 4-0 by Germany.

The 29-year-old's haircut against USA was reported to be a tribute to a young fan whose £50,000 brain surgery he paid for.

Before Thursday's must-win match-up with Ghana, Ronaldo has changed his style again to something akin to a badger, opting to have the sides of his head shaved while keeping it long on the top and is sporting a rather bizarre line at the top of the right side.

Should Portugal finally gel to sweep the floor with the Black Stars in Brasilia and Germany blow a dry USA out of the water in Recife, the Seleccao can still squeak into the last 16 of the World Cup.

'Messi is from Jupiter' - Keshi

    428887_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi is so good he must be from Jupiter, according to Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi.

The Argentina captain scored twice - the second a stunning free kick - as his side beat the Super Eagles 3-2 in their final Group F match in Porto Alegre on Wednesday.

It took Messi’s tally for the World Cup to four goals so far – and Keshi was in awe of the forward’s talent following his latest match-winning display.

"Messi is one hell of a player. There are other high calibre players, but Messi is from another planet, he's from Jupiter I think," Keshi said in his post-match press conference.

Iran's defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina meant Nigeria still qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup by finishing second in the group.

Keshi was frustrated that his players showed too much respect for Argentina in the first half and urged them to reproduce their second-half display in their second-round fixture, which is all but certain to be against France.

"We respected Argentina too much," Keshi added. "We relaxed on the second half, tried to play our game and improved then. I hope we can continue like this on the rest of the tournament.

"We know France is a very good team, they play very well. We know about them and we'll have to prepare for that."

Manchester City sign Porto midfielder Fernando

    421536_heroa.jpg

Manchester City have signed Porto midfielder Fernando for a fee of €15 million (£12m), the Portuguese club have confirmed.

As reported by Goal in May, the 26-year-old and right-back Bacary Sagna were top of Manuel Pellegrini's transfer wishlist for the summer.

Sagna's move on a free transfer was confirmed earlier this month, with Fernando becoming the champions' second close-season recruit.

City tabled a joint bid for Fernando and team-mate Eliaquim Mangala in January, though the deal could not be completed before the transfer deadline - with the former then signing a new contract with Porto.

Confirmation of the deal was initially held up due to complications, with Fernando's agent, Antonio Araujo, confident the move would happen last month.

He told Maisfutebol: "Fernando is in the city of Porto waiting for Porto tell him their decision about the documents they have received so that he can travel immediately [to Manchester]."

Fernando, who was denied the opportunity to represent Portugal, has been targeted by City for his midfield anchorman qualities and will compete with the likes of Fernandinho and Yaya Toure for a starting berth.

'Italy need real men' - De Rossi slams team-mates

    428640_heroa.jpg

Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi has slammed his team-mates following their shock World Cup exit, claiming the country needs "real men".

Cesare Prandelli's side failed to make it out of Group D after Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Uruguay saw them finish third - the second consecutive World Cup in which Italy have failed to reach the last 16.

Prandelli offered his resignation following back-to-back defeats for Italy but De Rossi - absent from the final group game due to a leg injury - appeared to take aim at controversial compatriot Mario Balotelli, who recently posted a picture via Twitter showcasing his Panini collection with his sticker in every slot.

"There were certainly components that affected the result, like the heat or the refereeing, but we must not cling to these things," said De Rossi.

"We must forget about all this quickly. Actually, I take that back: we should remember well what went wrong and begin again with real men."We need real men, not Panini stickers or characters. These are of no use to the national team."

Meanwhile, captain Gianluigi Buffon felt it was time to reflect after a disastrous campaign in Brazil."As a group and as a nation, it is a very sad day," he said. "It is a day of failure and is something that saddens us very much.

"The defeat should make us all think and let us take a good examination of our conscience."

Bravo: Chance to knock out Brazil a 'tremendous opportunity' for Chile

    428701_heroa.jpg

Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo believes his side's World Cup last-16 clash against Brazil on Saturday represents a "tremendous opportunity" to knock the home side out of the competition.

Bravo, who will move to Barcelona after the World Cup, has been in fine form for the South Americans and played his part in one of the tournament's biggest shocks as they sent Spain home with a 2-0 win over the defending champions last week.

Defeat to Netherlands in their last group game meant Chile had to settle for second place and Jorge Sampaoli's side now face a difficult date with hosts Brazil at Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte on Saturday.

But Bravo said: "We have the ability, we have the players and we have the tools to hurt Brazil. They have great players, but we are focused on our own game and we know that we are very strong as a collective.

"It's a great motivation for us because Brazil are a historical team in World Cups. It's a tremendous opportunity for us to knock out the home team, the hosts, and we are going to give it everything we have."

Sampaoli had complained of "defensive" Dutch tactics after Netherlands ran out 2-0 winners in the sides' group decider on Monday, but Bravo is sure Brazil will set out to attack in Saturday's match.

"Brazil are playing at home," he said. "I think they will come out and play an attacking game. They are an attacking team and I don't think they will alter their style against us."

Barcelona move 'a huge step' in my career - Bravo

    428732_heroa.jpg

Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo says his move to Barcelona from Real Sociedad is "a huge step" in his career and claims the transfer will give him confidence for his nation's upcoming clash with Brazil.

Bravo has signed a four-year deal with the Catalan club and will link up with the Blaugrana after the World Cup, moving for a fee in the region of €12 million.

Speaking to the media ahead of his side's last-16 clash with Brazil in Belo Horizonte on Saturday, Bravo said: "This is a huge step in my career. I am relaxed and focused on my main objective at the moment, which is the World Cup with Chile. But this is something really important for me. It is difficult to earn a move abroad and even more so to a club like Barcelona, so it fills me with pride."

"I'm relaxed," he added. "But these things help boost confidence ahead of what is an important game for me and for the team [against Brazil]. It has been a long time coming, with constant news and phone calls, but it has happened now and I am looking forward to it."

The 31-year-old was scouted by Barca because of his shot-stopping prowess, but also due to his ability to play with his feet and act as the last defender when needed - a feature of his game for Chile.

"A lot of the time I play as a defender," he said. "I have to use my feet a lot. A lot of teams play fast football now and you have to be able to deal with that."

Bravo will compete with fellow summer signing Marc-Andre ter Stegen at Camp Nou next season.

:love:Herrera arrives to complete Man Utd switch

    428252_heroa.jpg

Ander Herrera is meeting with Manchester United officials at their training ground in Carrington ahead of a switch to Old Trafford.

The Athletic Bilbao midfielder was met by Sir Bobby Charlton with a reception party at Carrington after he arrived in a white VW transporter before being shown around, along with his agent.

A club doctor is on site, though no medical has yet begun, as a €35 million transfer nears completion, with the Red Devils keen to do business quickly as his release clause would rise to around €40m on July 1.

Herrera is believed to have arrived in the United Kingdom on Tuesday and stayed in London before making the journey up to the North West, accompanied by his agent and friends. Much of the legal work to push the transfer through was completed at United's office in Mayfair on Tuesday.

The midfielder's agent was cautious when questioned about the possibility of securing a move but told the press that "things were moving along nicely".

The party flew into Northolt on a private flight on Tuesday ahead of talks with United officials at the training base on Wednesday.

Herrera would be Louis van Gaal's first summer signing and would see the 24-year-old finally complete a move that stalled at the end of the summer 2013 transfer window under then-boss David Moyes.

He said goodbye to his Athletic team-mates before flying out from Spain, with United having offered a contract worth €180,000 per week.

Ecuador 0-0 France: Valencia sees red as South Americans crash out of World Cup

    428981_heroa.jpg

Ecuador missed out on a place in the World Cup last 16 after being held to a 0-0 draw by France on Wednesday.

The fate of Reinaldo Rueda's men was always likely to be partly governed by Switzerland's result against Honduras - with their 3-0 win in Manaus helping to end Ecuador's hopes.

But an inability to take the chances they created against a much-changed France side, as well as Antonio Valencia's second-half dismissal, was ultimately the South Americans' undoing, while France too will recognise the need for improvement ahead of their last-16 clash against Nigeria.

France coach Didier Deschamps made a raft of changes, with les Bleus already virtually guaranteed top spot, as the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Lucas Digne and Antoine Griezmann all started.

It led to a disjointed performance in certain parts, but Ecuador were unable to find the goal and the win they were always likely to need.

Their chances were dealt a blow when captain Valencia was sent off for raking his studs down Digne's knee, and that allowed France to see out the game in relative comfort - continuing to rest players ahead of their next test.

France began with purpose as they pressed and harried Ecuador but they were given an early scare when Jefferson Montero got on the end of Valencia's long ball before being crowded out.

The lively Griezmann then pulled an effort wide after 10 minutes as France struggled to convert their possession into clear-cut chances.

Deschamps' six changes perhaps contributed to the French looking slightly out of sorts, although Moussa Sissoko was able to test Alexander Dominguez in Ecuador's goal with a left-footed volley.

Blaise Matuidi's careless loss of possession was not punished by Enner Valencia 20 minutes in before Bacary Sagna's delivery evaded the flapping Dominguez, as well as Karim Benzema.

If France were frustrated in possession early on, they were put under increasing pressure after the half-hour mark.

Exhibiting tidy passing and smart movement, Ecuador caused France problems without forging any goalscoring opportunities.

Paul Pogba and Valencia both had headers saved by their opposing goalkeepers late in the half but neither side could break the deadlock before the interval.

Griezmann's flick was tipped onto the inside of the post by Dominguez shortly after the break before Ecuador captain Valencia was dismissed for the second time in his last four international appearances.

Rueda was then left to rue Cristhian Noboa's wayward finishing after Valencia had robbed Pogba of possession.

However, if France were troubled by an Ecuador side with 11 men, they could afford to coast somewhat following the dismissal of Ecuador's captain - Pogba almost making life more comfortable when he went close with a header late on.

Dominguez capped off a fine performance for the South Americans with smart saves to deny Benzema and Loic Remy in the final minutes but it was not enough to stop them from heading home early.

It proved far from vintage from Deschamps' men but an unbeaten group stage still represents progress for les Blues after their shambolic exit in South Africa four years ago.

Honduras 0-3 Switzerland: Stunning Shaqiri hat-trick seals last-16 spot

    428986_heroa.jpg

Xherdan Shaqiri struck a superb hat-trick as Switzerland secured a place in the World Cup knockout rounds with a 3-0 win over Honduras on Wednesday.

He may not be a regular starter at Bayern Munich, but the young winger remains the focal point of a Swiss side that have established themselves as an emerging force.

And the 22-year-old rose to the occasion when it mattered on Wednesday, his tour de force securing a win that meant Switzerland progressed from Group E behind France, who drew 0-0 with Ecuador to ensure the South American nation crashed out.

With his side smarting from a 5-2 drubbing at the hands of France last Friday, Shaqiri settled any nerves when he scored a sixth-minute thunderbolt before sliding home a second before half-time.

He then capped his impressive display with a third in the 71st minute, silencing critics of his recent performances and setting up a mouthwatering clash with Argentina next Tuesday.

In stark contrast, Honduras suffered the ignominy of being eliminated without a single point to their name.

Determined to right the wrongs of their France nightmare, Switzerland - who brought Fabian Schar into their bruised defence in place of Philippe Senderos - came flying out of the blocks as Shaqiri had a goal-bound effort blocked.

His first World Cup goal would come soon after, though, and it was worth the wait.

After cutting inside from the right wing, the lively Shaqiri unleashed a powerful, left-footed effort into the top corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Shaqiri's one-man show continued for much of the opening exchanges, epitomised when he fired just wide midway through the first half.

Honduras started to offer an attacking threat and their verve showed up some nerves in the Switzerland backline, especially from set-pieces.

Such trepidation almost brought about an equaliser when Brayan Beckeles capitalised on the Swiss' inability to clear a corner by volleying just wide on the swivel.

But Shaqiri showed his class once again in the 31st minute when Victor Bernardez's failure to intercept a searching ball freed Josip Drmic, who slipped a pass inside for the 22-year-old to slide the ball home.

Determined to not go out with a whimper, Honduras began strongly after the break with Ricardo Rodriguez required to make a sliding clearance off the line after Jerry Bengtson had chipped the onrushing Diego Benaglio.

Shaqiri was on hand to show another flash of Switzerland’s threat at the other end, only to be denied by Noel Valladares – who was quickly off his line to keep out his effort.

Honduras continued to battle away and were left feeling aggrieved as a penalty appeal was turned down when Johnny Palacios went down under a challenge from Johan Djourou.

Any disgruntlement quickly turned to dejection, however, when Shaqiri completed his treble.

Drmic was again the provider, racing on to Rodriguez's searching long ball before jinking past Bernardez and sliding across a fine delivery that left Shaqiri with the simplest of tap-ins.

‘Stop calling me greedy’ – Sagna hits back at Arsenal fans

    415072_heroa.jpg

Bacary Sagna has hit back at Arsenal fans and insisted that he did not move to Manchester City for financial reasons.

The French defender has signed a three-year deal with City and will formally join the Premier League champions on a free transfer when his Arsenal contract expires on June 30.

A number of Gunners fans have accused Sagna of being greedy but the 31-year-old is adamant that the need for a fresh start was the driving force behind his decision to quit after seven years in north London.

“I’m going to clear everything up because I keep reading that I did it for money and I’m greedy,” said Sagna following France's World Cup draw with Ecuador at the Maracana.

“What I want to say is I stayed with Arsenal with the same contract since 2008 and I never asked for more money.

“For people who think it’s for money, it’s not. I just wanted to change. I needed a boost in my career and I think it was about time."

Sagna held several rounds of talks over a new deal with Arsenal and admitted he found it difficult to keep his mind clear amid constant speculation surrounding his future.

“It was not an easy time because we were still involved in the FA Cup and it was hard to stay focused,” he added.

“I stayed focused on my team because I have a lot of respect for Arsenal.

“I believe Arsenal are a great team. I believe we have great quality and [am happy that] we won a trophy finally. It’s not even about that because Arsenal have quality.

“It’s just that, personally, I wanted a boost. I needed to start from the bottom again.”

The France international, who is currently in Brazil for the World Cup, also says he is ready to fight with Pablo Zabaleta for a place in the City starting team.

Sagna added: “It is an exciting time for my career because I’m 31. I know they have a very good right-back in Zabaleta and I will have to fight to find some time on the pitch.

“But I think we have a good team with City and we can do great.”

Zaccheroni resigns as Japan boss after World Cup exit

    428613_heroa.jpg

Albero Zaccheroni has announced his resignation as Japan coach in the wake of the country's group-stage elimination at World Cup 2014.

The Samurai Blue kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Cote d'Ivoire and, after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Greece, went into their final Group C fixture needing to defeat Colombia to have any chance of progressing to the last 16.

However, Japan were routed 4-1 by the South Americans, prompting Zaccheroni to call time on his four-year spell with the Asian nation.

"I feel disappointed and unsatisfied with our results," the Italian coach told reporters on Wednesday.

"We were confident and enthusiastic about getting through the group stage before the tournament.

"It's only a short period of time, but we stumbled in the beginning of these three matches and didn't play as we'd imagined.

"And just as it's been for the last four years, the results came from the players and tactics that I selected, so the responsibility lies completely with me. I want to take responsibility.

"At lunch the entire team gathered together, and I thanked the players, staff, JFA (Japan Football Association) officials, and everyone else who has supported us for the last four years.

"I feel that now is time for me to leave the Japan national team. A new manager will fill up what's missing and make this team even stronger."

Ecuador stalemate won't spoil my joy - Deschamps

    429052_heroa.jpg

Didier Deschamps insists he is satisfied with what France have achieved at the World Cup so far, despite being held to a goalless draw by Ecuador on Wednesday.

Les Bleus were denied by the spirited South Americans despite the dismissal of Antonio Valencia on 50 minutes for a high challenge on Lucas Digne, with goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez winning the Man of the Match award.

Sections of the Maracana crowd greeted the referee's whistles to end both halves with audible booing, but after the match Deschamps felt no need to apologise for his team's performance.

"It takes more than [this result] to spoil my satisfaction," he insisted. "We qualified first in our group. We had a different team, different players but the idea was the same.

"They had a team with 10 players in front of us who defended very well.
"We had an enormous amount of possibilities but we were not as effective tonight. But I will not keep any negative souvenirs, and it will not spoil our joy at being in the round of 16."

Despite his defiance, Deschamps was just as unwilling to dampen the public feeling in France, where expectations have been raised by the swashbuckling nature of recent victories over Honduras and Switzerland.

"It's not their fault," he added. "Let them be happy. We didn't win this match and we tried everything, but it's not my role to tell them to cool down.

"It's up to us to keep that up and the players need that support, that euphoria. People want to encourage the players and motivate them. That's great.

"I'm not here to calm the people. Some people thought we're the kings of the world after beating Switzerland, but Ecuador have shown they have qualities.

"We're not going to win every match 3-0. Every match is difficult. It's hard to qualify for the round of 16."

I'll rotate to prepare players for knockouts - Wilmots

    423484_heroa.jpg

Marc Wilmots has admitted he will rotate his Belgium squad for the World Cup Group H closer against South Korea on Thursday.

The Red Devils have already booked their place in the Round of 16 following narrow victories over Algeria and Russia, and Wilmots will use the final pool match as an opportunity to inject greater experience into his young squad.

“I have a very good core of players, and I have a number of players who want to show what they can do,” the head coach told a pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

“I have a chance now to play fresh players who have not played in two to three weeks and they will do what they can to impress. I have six players in attacking positions and everyone will get a chance to play now.

“There have been a lot of players cramping after 70 minutes in the World Cup, and if we want to go further than the round of 16 then we have to keep players fresh.”
While many will be left out by choice, Wilmots has been forced to do without Thomas Vermaelen and Vincent Kompany, both of whom failed to complete training on the eve of the match.

“We have two players who have withdrew from the training. Vermaelen, who will hopefully fit for the next stage, and Kompany also,” informed Wilmots.

“They are two minor injuries, not very serious but they will miss the Korea game.
“Kompany’s injury is a groin injury. He stopped training after 35 minutes, he’s just over-exercised a bit.

“It’s early days but I don’t think it’s serious. We have time, as we have four or five days to get him right [for the Round of 16]. The doctors and physios will take their time and analyse it.”

Despite the extensive absences, Wilmots insists that he has paid maximum respect to South Korea in his preparation.“This afternoon at 3:30 we had a theory session. We always work in the same way, we would even have done that if we had had no points. We have seen all the video clips, all the set-pieces,” Wilmots insisted.

“We have a scenario in each match but I can’t say how Korea will play. They played very well against Russia but conceded four against Algeria. That may have affected their spirit.”

The two sides face off at the Arena Corinthians at 22:00CET, with Belgium needing only a draw to clinch first position in the group.

Hitzfeld: Shaqiri can shine in midfield for Switzerland

Switzerland boss Ottmar Hitzfeld says Xherdan Shaqiri is capable of realising his full potential in an attacking midfield role.

The Bayern Munich winger was deployed as a trequartista to devastating effect in Wednesday's crucial World Cup 2014 Group E clash with Honduras, with the 22-year-old scoring all three of his country's unanswered goals as they progressed to the last 16.

"He really displayed today what he is capable of," Hitzfeld said after the 3-0 win in Manaus. "This is the confirmation of all the potential he has.

"This is a new position for him. In midfield, he needs to run more and this tests his concentration, but we can only congratulate him for scoring three goals."

Switzerland must now take on Argentina, for whom Lionel Messi has been in inspirational form, scoring four goals in three games.

Stopping the Barcelona No.10 undoubtedly represents a daunting task but Hitzfeld is buoyed by the fact that all of the pressure is on the Albiceleste ahead of their Sao Paulo showdown.

"We are highly motivated," the German coach stated. "We are going to write history. In fact, we have already done that by reaching the last 16 in a World Cup in South America.

"It's not easy playing here but playing against Argentina ... we have nothing to lose.

"We are going to have to see how we will line up against Argentina, but I'm not so concerned about it now.

"I know their team and their tactics, though I'm not going to talk about them now!"

Capello: Russia stronger now than in 2010

    425170_heroa.jpg

Fabio Capello claims that his Russia team are stronger now than they were four years ago ahead of their do-or-die clash against Algeria.

Under Guus Hiddink, Russia failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after losing to Slovenia in a two-legged playoff.

The Sbornaya currently sit two points behind Algeria in Group H and need to win against the African side to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages in Brazil, but Capello is adamant his side have shown significant progress.

"This team will be better than the one [from 2010]," he said to reporters.

"Let's not forget that [the Russian Premier League] only has 16 teams while other leagues in Europe have 20 teams. This is an extremely important match for us.

"We shouldn't forget that Russia didn't participate in a World Cup 12 years before. It’s very difficult to improve, the very fact is that we have qualified in the World Cup this time."

Capello also stressed that his only objective was to win the match against Algeria, after Russia took only one point from their opening two games.

"The ambition of the team is that we always play to win," he added.

"We did the same [against South Korea]. They know have to keep going. This is so elementary, we can only win and that's we are going to try to do."

Capello also took time to thank Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who insisted that the former England boss was still one of the world's best despite Russia's struggle for form.

"I would like to thank the coach of Algeria for those kind words and also recognize that he has done a great job with Algeria," he said.

But when asked if Halilhodzic’s remarks added pressure on him to succeed, he added: "Absolutely not. I do my job as always.

"I think the key will be tactical equilibrium of both teams. We always play with an offensive tactic."
