Robben: We're on a mission at the World Cup

    431334_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben says Netherlands are "on a mission" to win the World Cup for the first time.

The Dutch suffered the disappointment of being beaten finalists for the third time four years ago in South Africa after losing to Spain, and they have never lifted football's most-coveted prize.

But Robben and his team-mates are out to change that in Brazil, where Louis van Gaal's men have won each of their four games so far en route to the quarter-finals.
The Bayern Munich winger told FIFA.com: "I think we are on a mission together, and when you come to a World Cup it's not to enjoy the weather and enjoy the beach in Rio.

"You're here to win matches and to go as far as possible. I don't think the expectations were that high before the tournament and, as a result, we can be very proud of where we are."Such spirit has certainly been on show to date, with Netherlands reaching the last eight - where they will face Costa Rica - thanks to a dramatic late comeback against Mexico.

A goal down after 87 minutes, Van Gaal's side turned the game on its head thanks to a fine strike from Wesley Sneijder and substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's last-ditch penalty.Robben puts much of the credit down to the head coach, who will take the reins at Manchester United at the conclusion of the tournament.

"We have a fantastic manager who knows exactly which players to bring on at what time and how to change things on the pitch, so that's fantastic," he added.

Wenger set for Alexis Sanchez talks

    431260_heroa.jpg

Arsenal have tabled a €40 million bid for Alexis Sanchez as Arsene Wenger prepares a charm offensive to land the Chile World Cup star ahead of rivals Liverpool.

The Gunners boss will meet Sanchez's agent in Brazil this week to convince the forward that he should move to the Londoners ahead of the other clubs competing for his signature.

Liverpool are set to request Sanchez as part of a possible part-exchange deal that could take Luis Suarez to Barcelona, while Manchester United and Juventus also have a strong interest in signing the Chilean.

Arsenal were preparing a bid that matched the Catalan club's €40m valuation of Sanchez after making him their No.1 forward target for this window.

The Gunners have now made their move and are confident the transfer fee and structure of payments they have proposed to Barca will be accepted by the Spanish giants.

Wenger will now attempt to convince Sanchez, whose World Cup ended last Saturday when Chile were eliminated on penalties by Brazil, that he should choose Arsenal ahead of his other suitors.

    431274.jpg

It was widely reported that a Barcelona delegation were to meet with Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre in London on Wednesday for an opening round of talks over signing the striker.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu admitted that bids had been tabled from a number of clubs, although he was keen to stress that the Catalunya side are not necessarily going to sell up this summer.

"I can confirm we have received offers from several clubs for Alexis Sanchez," he said at a press conference on Tuesday. "Not just for what he has done at the World Cup but for what he has done before.
"He's a player there in the market that people have got an eye on but he's our player for the moment and he's a basic member of the way our team plays.
"He fits our system, he had a magnificent season last season. He scored a lot of goals, provided assists, had a lot of the ball.
"He's a player we would like to have with us next season. But we are getting a lot of calls from clubs who are making offers to buy Alexis Sanchez."
Sanchez, 25, is a player in demand after a series of outstanding World Cup displays and a season in which his 21 goals were bettered at Barcelona only by Lionel Messi.

Arsenal had sent a delegation to Madrid to hold talks with a mystery forward, who is now understood to have been Sanchez.

The Gunners have now stepped up their efforts to sign Sanchez and the seriousness of their pursuit is demonstrated by the fact that both chief executive Ivan Gazidis and contract negotiator Dicky Law were involved in the negotiations in Madrid.

Wenger and his scouts believe Sanchez has the attributes to be developed into a centre-forward at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners' top priority this summer is to clinch the signing of an elite forward who can provide competition next season for Olivier Giroud, the only senior striker at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal tried to sign Julian Draxler in a £30m deal in January and failed with moves for Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Wayne Rooney last summer as well as a last-ditch loan bid for Demba Ba.

We've let the world know about Costa Rica - Gonzalez

    418557_heroa.jpg

Giancarlo Gonzalez says Costa Rica have achieved their World Cup goal of alerting a wider audience to their country's football.

Few expected Jorge Luis Pinto's men to cause much of a stir in Brazil and that was even before they were drawn into a tough Group D alongside Uruguay, Italy and England.

After beating Uruguay 3-1 in their opening match, Costa Rica then went on to defeat Italy and draw with England, seeing them top the group with seven points.
They then beat Greece on penalties in the first knockout round despite ending the game with 10 men and advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time in their history, with the Netherlands lying in wait."That was one of our main goals here in Brazil," he told reporters. "Letting the world know about Costa Rican football.

"We have players performing well at major European leagues, so we want to show the world that they can open their doors to us.

"We are showing that we are made of and also that we can play in those leagues.
"It's quite obvious that this team has fought against everything: referees, stadiums, 100,000 people."I feel this upcoming game will be a war, in a good sense. They [Netherlands] have their weapons and virtues."Of course there will always be mistakes. But we are ready to fight against anything."

Junior Diaz, Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell and Celso Borges have all attracted praise for their performances so far in Brazil, but goalkeeper Keylor Navas - who has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid - has been the key, according to Gonzalez."Keylor [Navas] is a great player," he added. "He helps us a lot because of his experience in La Liga.

"In Spain he faces the best players in the world and he passes that experience on to the group."He's a leader and you can see that in his performances. For us, having a goalkeeper of such qualities and playing at that level is key.

"As a national side and also as a country, we're proud of him because he's shown that he has the ability to play in any team and that he will perform the same way or even better in here with us."

Pekerman gunning for goals against Brazil

    431266_heroa.jpg

Jose Pekerman says he hopes Colombia's World Cup quarter-final against Brazil is an exciting contest with plenty of goals.

Having found the back of the net 11 times in their opening four matches, Colombia are the second-highest scorers so far and have entertained in reaching the last eight for the first time.

The experienced coach is anticipating more goals on Friday despite the last four encounters between the two sides ending in draws - three of which have been goalless.Colombia have never won a game against their South American rivals in Brazil but Pekerman insists previous form will go out of the window in Fortaleza.

"This is a new game, we cannot talk about favourites," the 64-year-old is quoted as saying in El Mundo. "It is a game that both teams have attributes to play well in.
"Brazil will be at their best, so we can expect a game of high tension and good technical ability."It may be a game with goals, and that would be good. That will make the people watching enjoy the World Cup.

"We are both very good teams, and unfortunately it is a match that will leave one side out [of the tournament]."

Ghana FA to keep coach Kwesi Appiah

    429290_heroa.jpg

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will remain in charge of the Black Stars, despite a disappointing World Cup campaign which ended in a group stage exit.

The president of the Ghana FA, Kwesi Nyantakyi, said the country’s football governing body has confidence in Appiah and will keep him to lead the four-time African champions to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

“The Executive Committee has full confidence in Kwesi Appiah and in his ability to do the job,” Nyantakyi said at a post-World Cup press conference in Accra. “They have instructed that the necessary action about his new contract should be completed.”While apologising for a poor campaign in Brazil, Nyantakyi said issues about bonuses and appearance fees will be dealt with thoroughly ahead of subsequent tournaments.

“The performance of the team fell below expectation,” Nyantakyi stated. “I wish to offer an unqualified apology to Ghanaians. The World Cup in Brazil taught us a bitter lesson.”He also demanded that Appiah reviews the selection of players and plans with the future in mind.

Nyantakyi said: “We have also request the coach to review the current Black Stars and retain players only based on competence, commitment and discipline. The coach should be encouraged to add young additions to the team.”

Atletico told to up €6 million Keylor Navas bid

    431163_heroa.jpg

Levante president Quico Catalan has warned Atletico Madrid that Keylor Navas will not be sold on the cheap and says they must improve their offer for the goalkeeper.

The Spanish champions have offered €6 million plus forward Leo Baptistao, but his current employers are holding out for his full €10 million release clause.

Navas has been one of the stars of the World Cup so far, where he is featuring for Costa Rica, helping his team to the quarter-finals by starring in a penalty-shootout victory over Greece in the last 16.

The 27-year-old has conceded just twice in four matches in Brazil and has continued his fine domestic form from last season, including a fine showing in Levante's 2-0 victory over Atletico in May.

The Spanish champions have apparently set their sights on Navas as they bid to replace Thibaut Courtois, who is to return to Chelsea after three years on loan at the Vicente Calderon.

Catalan has now told Atletico that Navas will only be sold if his €10m release clause is met, while also claiming there is plenty of interest in the former Albacete man."Keylor has a €10m release clause and we know that Keylor is worth more than that," Catalan told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

"All the teams that have made offers for Keylor know what the answer will be - the release clause.Referencing Atletico's offer, Catalan explained: "€6m plus Leo Baptistao is not €10m.

"Keylor is having a great World Cup and many clubs, foreign and Spanish, have shown their interest."

    Valencia announce shock Pizzi sacking

    397397_heroa.jpg

Valencia have announced the shock sacking of coach Juan Antonio Pizzi.

The 46-year-old was only given the job back in December and guided the club to eighth in La Liga as well as the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Sevilla.

But after the club were taken over in May by Singapore businessman Peter Lim, they have now opted to start afresh by terminating the services of Pizzi and his staff.

"With the expansion of the sales process of Valencia CF, for reasons unrelated to the management of the club, and in order to provide stability to the future sports project, the board of directors of Valencia FC, having analysed all the possibilities in this complex and crucial moment for shareholders, has decided to dispense with the services of coach Juan Antonio Pizzi," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Valencia Football Club wishes the best of luck to Pizzi and his coaching staff, with them having developed [the club] with their professionalism and involvement in the institution."

Former Deportivo La Coruna and Porto goalkeeper Nuno is rumoured to be Valencia's first choice coach as they bid to make a swift appointment ahead of pre-season.

Lukaku admits to World Cup 'relief'

    431226_heroa.jpg

Romelu Lukaku has admitted he was relieved to have at last made his mark on the World Cup in Belgium's 2-1 World Cup win over the USA.

The Chelsea striker came off the bench after 90 goalless minutes in Salvador and scored his side's winning goal, as they fought off a spirited American side inspired by Tim Howard's superb goalkeeping display.

Having seen his place in Marc Wilmots' XI taken by Lille youngster Divock Origi, Lukaku revealed assurances from his coach allowed him to remain calm and finally make a telling contribution on Tuesday night.

"The coach told me I was going to come on during extra-time," he explained.

"As soon as I got onto the pitch, I knew that I would find the net.

"From my very first sprint, there was a big chance. At that moment I was very happy, because for once I did something good on the pitch.

"I perhaps put myself under too much pressure. I just wanted the team to win and for us to continue.

"With the potential we have, if we had been knocked out today, we would have all been very disappointed.

"The bench has made the difference in recent games, which means everyone is contributing."

Belgium will face Argentina in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

    Genoa confirm Diego Perotti signing

    366302_heroa.jpg

Genoa have confirmed the signing of Sevilla forward Diego Perotti on a four-year contract.

The 25-year-old joined Sevilla in 2007 but has not been a first-team regular in recent seasons, making just 19 appearances last term before being loaned out to Argentinian giants Boca Juniors.

However, he failed to make an impact during what was his first spell in Argentina’s top flight and Genoa have now moved for the forward by confirming the deal in a brief statement on the club's official website.

"Genoa communicates it has reached an agreement with Sevilla for the acquisition of the sporting rights of forward Diego Perotti," it read.

"The player has signed a four-year contract."

Argentina international Perotti has two caps for his country but has not represented the Albiceleste since 2011.

He scored four goals in eight appearances in Sevilla's Europa League-winning campaign last season.

Barcelona promise to reveal Neymar 'truth'

    429908_heroa.jpg

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has promised to reveal the "truth" about his side's purchase of Neymar over the course of the next month.

The prosecutor's office in Madrid is currently investigating the transfer fee the club paid for the star in the summer of 2013.

The reported sum was €57.1 million, but allegations have since surfaced that the club had failed to declare a further €37.9m, which was given to a company close to the Neymar family.

"We are quiet on the Neymar case," Bartomeu was quoted as saying by AS. "It was an interpretation of the prosecutor.

"In July we will have statements from Rosell, the father of Neymar, and from [general director] Toni Rossich on behalf of the club.

"The truth of the Neymar event will benefit us. But it does not remove the possibility of a complaint.

"We will explain the same thing. We have published the exact figures but what we want is a judge or a prosecutor to interpret them the same as us.

"When I say the truth through Toni Rossich, that will be the truth and is the truth."

Belgium will attack Argentina - Witsel

    430730_heroa.jpg

Axel Witsel says Belgium are not afraid of World Cup 2014 quarter-final opponents Argentina and are ready to take the game to the South American nation.

The Red Devils booked their place in the last eight with a dramatic 2-1 extra-time win over United States in Salvador, just hours after the Albiceleste had scraped through thanks to Angel Di Maria's 118th-minute winner against Switzerland.

Witsel says the pressure is now off Belgium, who have only once made it to the semi-finals of the World Cup, and that Marc Wilmots' men will, therefore, have no qualms about taking the game to Lionel Messi and Co.

"Our goal was to reach the quarter-finals," the midfielder told reporters in Salvador. "Now we are here, we can enjoy the next game and I think we have a chance to get through to the semis.

"Argentina are a very good team, with top players like [Lionel] Messi, Di Maria and [Gonzalo] Higuain.

"But we have quality too. We're not afraid of Argentina and we'll go out win the game. Everything that happens for us now is just a bonus.

"I don't know if we can perform a miracle here by winning the World Cup but if you just take things game by game, you can make your dreams come true."

Indeed, Witsel is hoping that anything is possible for a side that exhibited great perseverance and resilience in defeating USA 2-1 at Arena Fonte Nova.

Belgium peppered Tim Howard's goal without shots for 90 minutes but only made the breakthrough in extra-time, going two goals to the good thanks to Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

However, the Red Devils were left hanging on after Julian Green pulled a goal back for the US and Witsel admitted he was a relieved man at the full-time whistle.

"It was a frustrating game for us," the Zenit star confessed. "We had so many chances to score.

"We had 38 shots on goal. We shot and we shot but the ball didn't want to go in. So you start to think that maybe USA will score on the counterattack.

"But we gave everything. We kept going and thankfully we won."

Barcelona chief hints at Suarez negotiations

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has hinted the Catalan outfit are in discussions with Liverpool over the signing of Luis Suarez.

Goal understands officials from the Camp Nou outfit are meeting with Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre on Wednesday to discuss the possible transfer of Suarez.

Liverpool will hold out for the release clause of between €75 million & €100m before agreeing to sell the Uruguay striker, despite his four-month ban for biting meaning he will miss the opening two months of the season.

And while Bartomeu confirmed that Barcelona are in the process of reinforcing the first team, he refused to specifically name Suarez as a target.

"I did say that this year we are going to be restructuring the team in depth and we're working on that," he said at a press conference.

"We've been working on that since February. But I can't reveal things we're doing. It's a textbook situation we have to be discreet on these things, we cannot give clues to other teams.

"I will say that we do have a lot of negotiations at an advanced stage, but people are at the World Cup so negotiations aren't all as far as we would like.

"But people are going to speculate about players that are at the World Cup and who we could sign but there's an awful lot of factors.

"Suarez is not a Barca player he's a Liverpool player so I can't speak about him. I can speak about what he did, to come out and apologise it is honourable."

Having missed out on La Liga, the Champions League and Copa del Rey last season, Bartomeu conceded Barcelona underachieved under Gerardo Martino.

But Bartomeu is confident that Barcelona's reshaping of the first-team squad, including new head coach Luis Enrique, will help bring about an upturn in fortunes.

"We want to be able to once again win every competition we take part in," he added. "Bringing Luis Enrique on board is an example of what we want to do.

"We're bringing in players who are part of our philosophy but also bring something new to the club.

"Let's not forget we have Neymar, [Lionel] Messi, [Andres] Iniesta, we have the best players in the world here. They're all here, we're a unique team and are privileged to have them with us."

    Barcelona reveal Alexis Sanchez bids

    424859_heroa.jpg

Barcelona have confirmed they have received offers for Alexis Sanchez, but president Josep Maria Bartomeu says the club are not interested in selling the forward.

The 25-year-old impressed for Chile at the World Cup until they were eliminated by hosts Brazil in the last 16, following a season in which he scored 19 goals in 34 league appearances for Barca.

But despite his form, there has been persistent speculation that Alexis could depart Camp Nou, with reported interest from Serie A champions Juventus and Premier League club Arsenal.

"I can confirm we have received offers from several clubs for Alexis Sanchez," he said at a press conference. "Not just for what he has done at the World Cup but for what he has done before.

"He's a player there in the market that people have got an eye on but he's our player for the moment and he's a basic member of the way our team plays.

"He's a player we would like to have with us next season. But we are getting a lot of calls from clubs who are making offers to buy Alexis Sanchez."

The Chilean has also been mentioned as part of a possible deal that could take Liverpool striker Luis Suarez to Spain.

Lallana thanks Southampton fans in newspaper ad

    429712_heroa.jpg

New Liverpool signing Adam Lallana has thanked the supporters of former club Southampton via an advert in a local newspaper.

The 26-year-old was captain at St Mary's Stadium and rose through the youth ranks, helping the club return to the Premier League in 2012 after they had dropped as low as League One in 2009.

However, the England international brought an end to his lengthy association with Southampton on Tuesday when he completed a €31million switch to Anfield.

Lallana's tenure is thought to have ended on somewhat of a sour note amid reports he threatened not to play for the club again if the move to Merseyside was blocked.

Despite those suggestions, Lallana issued a statement in The Daily Echo expressing his gratitude to the club's supporters.

It read: "Thank you, 14 unforgettable years, the memories will last a lifetime. Thank you Saints fans for your endless support, a place in my heart forever."

Lallana is the latest star name to depart Southampton. Striker Rickie Lambert also joined Liverpool, while full-back Luke Shaw transferred to Manchester United.

With manager Mauricio Pochettino having also left for Tottenham, there is also continued speculation surrounding centre-back Dejan Lovren while it has been reported that midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is looking to leave the St Mary's.
