Prandelli set to be unveiled as new Galatasaray coach

    423653_heroa.jpg

Galatasaray president Unal Aysal has all but confirmed that Cesare Prandelli will take over as head coach ahead of the new season.

The 56-year-old left his post as Azzurri boss immediately after they were eliminated from the World Cup group stages, when defeats to Uruguay and Costa Rica ensured they failed to reach the last 16 of the competition.

Meanwhile, the Turkish giants have been looking to recruit a new coach following the departure of Roberto Mancini after they finished second in the Turkish league.

Ousted Manchester United trainer David Moyes had held talks in Istanbul while USA's Jurgen Klinsmann and Germany boss Joachim Low had been name-checked by Galatasaray as top targets.

However, it emerged on Thursday that Prandelli was the new frontrunner after the club announced it was holding talks with the Italian and the club's president has since suggested he will be handed the reins on Monday.

"Cesare Prandelli is a coach who fits our criteria," Aysal is quoted by the club's official Twitter account as saying. "Prandelli and the club will communicate the decision in a day or two, but the Italian is someone that could win the championship with ease.

"On Monday he will be put at the helm of the team and the 2014-2015 season will be beautiful, I can feel it."

Galatasaray will play in the Champions League next year after Fenerbahce were expelled from all European competitions.

Not winning the World Cup would be failure, claims Kroos

    424984_heroa.jpg

Toni Kroos believes anything other than winning the World Cup would constitute failure for Germany this summer.

The three-time world champions are preparing for their quarter-final clash against France at the Maracana on Friday on the back of an unconvincing victory over Algeria after extra-time in the last 16.

Kroos, however, says that winning the World Cup is the only option for Germany such is the level of expectation in the country.

"The pressure is there because we have good players and a top team capable of great things," Kroos said in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

"Expectation is running high because people want us to win the title. Anything else would be a defeat.

"France is a team on the very top. We know what is coming our way, we know that they have top players. They have performed as a team, which perhaps was not always the case before.

"It's important for us to keep the ball and win individual duels. If we perform our best then I believe we are the better team. We have to show it."

Kroos also backed under-fire team-mate Mesut Ozil and believes the Arsenal man will show his match-winning qualities in the remainder of the tournament.

Kroos added: "[Ozil] has shown in this tournament his qualities to be decisive in a match, regardless of where he plays. I think these knockout matches will show how important he is to the team."

Sacking Seedorf was correct call - Montolivo

    380010_heroa.jpg

AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo says the decision to sack Clarence Seedorf was the right one for the good of the Serie A club.

The Rossoneri endured a tumultuous early season under Massimiliano Allegri and Seedorf took charge in January in an attempt to arrest their decline and return them to the European places.

The Dutchman failed to fully turn around the club's midtable fortunes and Milan ultimately finished adrift of even the Europa League places in eighth, prompting Seedorf's sacking and former striker Filippo Inzaghi's hiring ahead of the World Cup.

Central midfielder Montolivo, who missed out on Italy's group-stage exit in Brazil after picking up an injury in a pre-tournament friendly, fails to sympathise with Seedorf and believes that getting rid of the former midfielder for Inzaghi was a wise choice.

"With Seedorf, there wasn't much harmony, the decision to sack him was for the good of Milan," he told gathered media at a club publicity event.

"Inzaghi can't wait to get started, though, I felt that even today. He has the right energy to revive Milan and also has the right ideas. It's his first coaching experience but we are all with him, there are all the ingredients here for him to do well."

Montolivo also suggested that the club are attempting to make some moves in the transfer market this summer to bolster Inzaghi's options and claimed the now fully fit Stephan El Shaarawy can be a major success next season.

"The player who can be the biggest surprise is Stephan El Shaarawy, I'm expecting a lot from him. At Milan there are a lot of good midfielders. The club are looking to give Inzaghi a great squad.

"I'm feeling better after my injury - we want to be competitive again and have a great season."

Kroos: I have not agreed to sign for Real Madrid

    428298_heroa.jpg

Toni Kroos has denied reaching an agreement to sign for Real Madrid and insists his future will not be resolved until after the World Cup.

Reports in Spain have claimed the Bayern Munich midfielder has agreed to €25 million switch to the European champions on a five-year contract.

Kroos has just one year left on his Bayern contract but, speaking at the Maracana ahead of Germany's World Cup quarter-final clash with France, claimed there have been no developments on his future.

Kroos said: "I can't help you. There is nothing more I can tell you. I can't comment on every article in the newspapers.

"I've said all along I will not make a decision on my future during the World Cup.

"As soon as the tournament is over, I will make a decision and something will be announced. But it will not happen while I'm here and I haven't signed anything."

'I want to be a champion next season' - Emre Can aims high after sealing Liverpool move

    416839_heroa.jpg

Emre Can says he is aiming to win the Premier League title with Liverpool next season after completing his move from Bayer Levekusen.

The two clubs agreed a deal in principle last month but the 20-year-old midfielder has now become Brendan Rodgers' third signing of the summer after Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, who both arrived from Southampton.

"I believe this season the team finished second in the league, so I want to be a Premier League champion next season," Can told the club's official website.

"It was an easy decision for me to sign with Liverpool as I had a very good chat with the manager, which clearly showed that the club and he wanted to sign me. This was important for me. I can say it was an easy decision for me."

Can, who has represented Germany at Under-21 level, began his youth career at Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to Bayern Munich at the age of 15.

    431676_heroa.jpg

Can made just six first-team appearances for the German champions before he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen but the midfielder maintains he learnt a great deal from his time at Bayern.

He added: "I am very thankful for my time at Bayern Munich, I played there for four years. It was a great honour to play for one of the biggest and best teams in the world.

"However, I am at Liverpool now and this is where my sole focus is. I believe Liverpool football club can be on a similar level to Bayern Munich next season.

"There were a couple of players [who influenced me]. At Bayern Munich, for example, there was Franck Ribery, who I got along with very well and who I have spoken with a lot. He obviously became European Footballer of the Year, hence there is a lot to learn from him on the training pitch.

"In my position especially, I also learned a lot from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Luiz Gustavo. They helped my development.

"I don't regret leaving Bayern Munich. I am convinced it was the correct step for me. I played a lot at Bayer Leverkusen.

"I played in the Champions League and in the Bundesliga. I have played a lot of games and it was a very good decision to go to Leverkusen. During the year, I matured and developed massively."

France 0-1 Germany: Hummels breaks French hearts to seal semi-final berth

    431996_heroa.jpg

A first half header from Mats Hummels fired Germany into the semi-finals of the World Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over France.

The Borussia Dortmund defender missed the last-16 victory over Algeria as a result of flu-like symptoms, with the bug having also affected a number of the squad in the build-up to Friday's game.Hummels, however, showed now ill-effects of any sickness in the 12th minute, rising highest to head home Toni Kroos' free-kick from the left and hand Germany victory at the Maracana.

Such consistent performers throughout World Cup history with seven final appearances, Germany once again showed their ability to grind out results in major tournaments as they successfully stifled France, though Karim Benzema came close to a leveller late on, only to be denied by Manuel Neuer.

For Didier Deschamps' men, a competition that had promised so much after the group-stage thumpings of Honduras and Switzerland ended in disappointment, as France failed to gain revenge for semi-final defeats to West Germany at the 1982 and 1986 editions.

Germany made the better start, but it was France who had the first effort on goal in the seventh minute when Benzema volleyed Mathieu Valbuena's chipped pass narrowly wide.Hummels made France pay for that miss five minutes later when he broke the deadlock with his second goal of the 2014 World Cup. The defender beat Raphael Varane to Kroos' set-piece and sent a glancing header in off the underside of the crossbar.

Twice Germany had appeals for penalties waved away, claiming fouls by Mathieu Debuchy on Miroslav Klose and Thomas Muller, but on each occasion referee Nestor Pitana signalled for play to continue.

Neuer was finally called into action for the first time 11 minutes before the break, and reacted brilliantly to keep out Valbuena's left-footed volley, before Hummels deflected Benzema's rebound over the bar.

The striker continued to threaten as half-time approached, seeing his header blocked by the body of Hummels and then firing a strike straight at Neuer after cutting in from the left shortly afterwards.

France cautiously pressed for an equaliser after the break, but Varane's header from Valbuena's right-wing cross on the hour-mark was comfortable for the goalkeeper.

Muller almost put the result beyond doubt nine minutes later, but his shot from an angle was deflected narrowly wide by Mamadou Sakho, although the officials failed to spot the deviation and awarded a goal-kick.

Andre Schurrle replaced Klose - who is still in search of the goal that will see him become the World Cup's all-time leading scorer outright - and tested Hugo Lloris with a low drive that the Tottenham man was equal to.Benzema worked some space inside the area with 14 minutes to play, but once again Hummels was there to block and Neuer parried away Blaise Matuidi's effort from a tight angle.

With France forced to push men forward, they left themselves vulnerable on the break and Lloris saved well from Schurrle, who ought to have done better eight minutes from time.

Neuer then palmed away Benzema's angled drive late on as Germany held on to seal yet another semi-final berth and send France crashing out.

Messi has shown he's the best, says Sabella

    428430_heroa.jpg

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella says Lionel Messi has shown he is the best player in the world ahead of his side's World Cup quarter-final against Belgium.

Messi has netted four goals in as many appearances in Brazil, while he also provided the assist for Angel Di Maria's winner in the 1-0 round of 16 win over Switzerland.

"Messi dependence? Any team that has a player like Messi will depend on him," the Argentina coach said at a press conference.

"The fact that he is doing what he has been doing shows that he is the best in the world, but there’s more to this team.

"Against Switzerland, [Rodrigo] Palacio was the one who won the ball in midfield before he set up Messi ahead of the goal. Without Palacio, we would not have scored that goal.

"One always expects Messi to do something different. He can always surprise and do something unexpected. But then again, it's not really a surprise anymore with Messi when he does something unexpected.

"Four years ago, Messi was criticised and now we are believed to be too reliant on him..."

Sabella then went on to stress that Argentina cannot afford to take Belgium lightly if they are to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

"Belgium have a very good team. They have a bit of a golden generation. They had a similar generation in 1982 that beat Argentina.

"They have a lot of players who play in the Premier League. They’re a powerful team and we have to take our measures.

"Belgium have some superb individual players and work very well as a team. They have one of the best goalkeepers in the world and their defenders play at great clubs in big leagues."

Maradona: Brazil don't look like champions

    421651_heroa.jpg

Diego Maradona has questioned whether Brazil have what it takes to win the World Cup after an unconvincing campaign so far.

Felipe Scolari's side advanced to the quarter-finals after edging out South American counterparts Chile on penalties, and Maradona believes they must improve to have a chance against Colombia in the quarter-finals.

"Except for a few moments of brilliance from Neymar, Brazil have not looked like potential champions," said Maradona in his Times of India column.

"It was said that their defence is one of the best. Stoppers Thiago Silva and David Luiz, wing-backs Daniel Alves and Marcelo, with [Luiz] Gustavo and Paulinho as additional cover in midfield would not concede many goals. After three in four matches and many nervous moments in front of the goalmouth, this opinion has to change."

The 53-year-old also highlighted a distinct lack of flair and creativity in Brazil's team apart from Neymar, traits that have historically been entrenched in famous Brazil sides of the past.

He added: "I am concerned about the lack of creativity in their midfield. Normally, this is an area where Brazil score over their opponents. Other than Oscar, this team has no brilliant passer. Paulinho has flopped, Fernandinho has been okay. The forwards will struggle if they don't get quality supply from the midfield.

"Neymar will be tightly marked and will thus drop deep to find space, and unless the supply line is good, you are bound to get suffocated, like what happened against Chile. They have to find support for Neymar to sustain pressure in the attacking third."

Ahead of the quarter-final tie in Fortaleza on Friday, Maradona believes it is Colombia's James Rodriguez who will be the defining factor for both teams' fortunes.

"Colombia have been the most impressive South American side," said Maradona.

"In Rodriguez, they have found the most promising footballer of this World Cup. He is masterminding their progress.

"Without Gustavo, Brazil must keep him under strict vigil. How they do that might determine the outcome of this match."

Fifa: Suarez not allowed to train

    428644_heroa.jpg

Fifa insist Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is banned from training with his club during his four-month ban, after apparently backtracking on earlier claims to the contrary.

Claudio Sulser, head of Fifa's disciplinary committee, previously stated it would be “disproportionate” to ban Suarez from pre-season training.

However, when asked to clarify these remarks, Fifa insist Sulser was “inaccurate” and that Suarez would not be allowed to train with either Uruguay or Liverpool.

"This is inaccurate," said a Fifa spokesperson. "Claudio Sulser just said he could make the medical testing for a transfer [only this], but clearly said as many times earlier that he cannot do any football activity which includes that he cannot train with the national team nor club."

Suarez is allowed to move clubs during his ban, and Goal understands Barcelona are on the verge of signing the Uruguay international in an €88m deal.

Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has previously praised Suarez after he finally apologised for biting Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's clash with Italy at the World Cup.

Suarez was banned from all football-related activity for four months, suspended for nine competitive international matches and hit with an €80,000 fine for the incident, although Uruguay have appealed the ban in an attempt to get it reduced.

Barcelona close in on €88m Suarez deal

    426194_heroa.jpg

Barcelona are on the verge of completing the €88 million signing of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

Senior officials from Liverpool and Barcelona met in London on Wednesday, with the Catalan club making an initial offer for Suarez of around €82m.

While that initial offer was rebuffed, and discussions involving Alexis Sanchez in a potential cash-plus-player deal were short-lived, Barcelona are now confident of wrapping up the signing in a straight cash deal.

The Spanish giants are expected to table an improved offer that will meet the release fee stipulated in the contract Suarez signed last December. Goal understands that this figure is just over the €88m mark.

Liverpool are still pursuing Sanchez but they are behind Arsenal in the race to land the Chile World Cup star, who is not part of the deal to take Suarez to Camp Nou.

The Merseysiders now expect to receive the third-highest transfer fee for a player at a Premier League club, beaten only by Gareth Bale's €100m move to Real Madrid last summer and Cristiano Ronaldo's €94m transfer from Manchester United to the reigning European champions in 2009.

Liverpool's American owners vowed to stand firm on Suarez's valuation after he had tarnished his image by biting Giorgio Chiellini and incurring a four-month ban from Fifa.

Fenway Sports Group were adamant during talks with Barca that Suarez could only leave if the valuation of his release fee was met.

Liverpool have not denied that, as revealed by Goal, a release fee was inserted in the new €283,000-a-week contract that Suarez signed at the end of 2013.

All parties now expect the 27-year-old to transfer to Camp Nou and line up alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar in a star-studded front line next season.

    431181_heroa.jpg

This open display of affection for the player came just 24 hours before a meeting in London between Barca and Liverpool, who had no involvement in Suarez's apology.

"Everyone knows that Luis is an excellent player, everyone knows last season he played in various positions in attack, but everyone also knows that he is a Liverpool player," the Zubizarreta said.

"Regardless of whether the club signs him or not, his quality is unquestionable. He has shown a lot of quality with Uruguay and scored more than 30 goals with Liverpool, so he has the necessary quality to play for Barca."

    Schieber swaps Dortmund for Hertha

    373822_heroa.jpg

Hertha Berlin have completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund forward Julian
    Schieber on a four-year contract.

The 25-year-old had struggled to cement a place in Dortmund’s starting line-up since joining the German giants two years ago.

Schieber – who scored just three goals in 35 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund – will now begin a new stage of his career with Hertha, with the capital club signing him until 2018 on an undisclosed fee.

"I would like to thank the coaching staff, my great BVB team-mates and the outstanding fans, who have always supported me, for two great years," Schieber told Dortmund's official website."I've learned a thing or two from [Dortmund head coach] Jurgen Klopp, practised every day at the highest level and played in a Champions League final.

"These are things that will stay with me. We are parting on amicable terms, and that makes me very happy."Dortmund sporting director, Michael Zorc, thanked Schieber and wished the best of luck with his new side Hertha.

He said: "We would like to thank Julian for the eventful time we had together and wish him all the best for his future career."
