Neuer best in the world - Zoff

    432002_heroa.jpg

Forget his ability with his hands, it's Manuel Neuer's poise on the ball that marks him out as the best in the world in the eyes of Dino Zoff.

The former Italy goalkeeper is recognised as one of the finest to have pulled on a pair of gloves and has kept a close eye on the current generation of keepers at the World Cup.

Brazil's Julio Cesar and Keylor Navas of Costa Rica are two men who have caught the eye following their penalty shoot-out heroics, but for Zoff there is one man who stands head and shoulders above the rest.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "The German goalkeeper (Neuer) is currently number one in the world. He has class, coldness, a sense of place. And, compared to many of his colleagues, he has one more weapon ... he's terrific with his feet. "

Neuer will be the first name on the team sheet when Germany take on Brazil in the first of the two World Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, where he will line-up against opposite number Cesar.

The Brazil goalkeeper has rolled back the years at the tournament after a mixed couple of years at club level, in which relegation from the Premier League with Queens Park Rangers was followed by a loan move to MLS side Toronto FC.

Zoff has been impressed with Cesar's ability to raise his game and pointed to his obvious preparation prior to saving two penalties in the shoot-out victory over Chile.

"You could see that he had studied well the characteristics of the Chilean penalty takers," Zoff explained.

"I'm happy because Julio must have had a year of hell. First put off by QPR, then forced to emigrate to Toronto to play.

"Julio is a leader. Maybe he's not as explosive as in the days of Inter but he is still one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the world."

    Romero: I owe Van Gaal

    432348_heroa.jpg

They say football is a universal language, but Sergio Romero will be forever thankful for Louis van Gaal's linguistic skills during his time at AZ Alkmaar.

The Argentina goalkeeper will face his former coach in the semi-finals of the World Cup when the South Americans take on Netherlands on Wednesday.

Romero will hope to provide a sizeable obstruction between Van Gaal and his hopes of reaching the final, but admitted he will always owe the Dutchman for helping him to embrace a new world.

"So many things are happening right now with me and the Argentina squad, it's not easy to realise it all," he said in an interview with De Telegraaf.

"After the drama in 2010 in South-Africa, the critics and the low points and now we're in the semi-final against Holland. And I'm playing against my old coach Louis van Gaal, whom I owe so much.
"When I came to AZ in 2007, I entered a new world. I spent my whole youth at Racing Club de Lavellaneda in Argentina, where I also made my debut. In the Netherlands I was a stranger.

"In the dressing room at AZ Alkmaar, we had to speak Dutch. But Van Gaal spoke to me in Spanish. That was very important for me to get through the first tough period. He was my saviour and for that reason my relationship with him is very good."

The 27-year-old has started all five games for Argentina in the World Cup so far.

Manchester United target Vermaelen casts doubt on Arsenal future

    425866_heroa.jpg

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is unsure whether he will stay or go this summer.

The central defender wants a new club after falling behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium but, as exclusively revealed by Goal, Arsene Wenger is stalling his move to Manchester United while he lines up a replacement.

The Red Devils are willing to pay more than £8 million for the Belgium international, who has left Brazil after his country's World Cup campaign ended at the quarter-final stage.

Vermaelen is now ready to focus on his club future but, ahead of discussions with Arsenal, does not know where his future lies.

"I really do not know where I will play, Arsenal or elsewhere next season," he told the London Evening Standard.

"All my attention went to the World Cup. I will see when I talk with Arsenal."

Vermaelen has a year left on his contract with Arsenal but played just 14 league matches last season as the Gunners finished fourth in the Premier League and won the FA Cup.

Liverpool move will be good for Markovic, says Serbia coach

    398415_heroa.jpg

Caretaker Serbia coach Ljubinko Drulovic believes that Lazar Markovic's expected transfer to Liverpool can help him become one of Europe's elite players.

The 20-year-old is widely anticipated to join the Reds from Portuguese champions Benfica after the Premier League club reportedly activated his £25 million release clause.

The Serbia international winger, who made his debut as a 17-year-old against Armenia in 2012, only arrived in Portugal at the start of the 2013-14 season after joining Benfica on a five-year deal from Partizan Belgrade.

Despite the youngster's spending just one season in the Primeira Liga, Drulovic - interim coach of the national team following Sinisa Mihajlovic's decision to take charge of Sampdoria in November - says that Markovic's proposed move to Anfield is the right decision for his career.

"Markovic had an excellent season at Benfica last year, he evolved a lot," he told Radio Renascenca.

"It'll be good for him and Benfica. Going to a very strong league will help him even more to become a major player worldwide.

"He's 20 years old and has a long time to play. Markovic could prove to become a very important player in Europe."

Markovic enjoyed a successful debut campaign for Benfica, scoring seven goals in all competitions as Jorge Jesus's men claimed a domestic treble and reached the Europa League final.

    Official: Manchester City sign Caballero

    article-2683303-1F490FD200000578-620_634x442.jpg

Manchester City have confirmed that they have signed goalkeeper Willy Caballero from Malaga on a three-year contract.

The 32-year-old flew into Manchester on Monday and completed a medical for a deal worth €8 million.

The Argentine told the club's official website: "I am very happy and really looking forward to the start of pre-season and performing well to help the team.

"This is a new challenge and a new league for me. I have been doing well in the previous years and my goal is to go on and hopefully perform at the same level for City.

"I know I am coming to a big club with a very good goalkeeper. City already have a great goalkeeper in Joe Hart but I will try and compete for the No.1 spot. I will do my best in the training sessions."

City have been seeking a new keeper to provide competition for Hart since Costel Pantilimon left for Sunderland earlier this summer.

He joins Bacary Sagna and Fernando in signing for Manuel Pellegrini's side this summer, with the acquisition of Brunu Zuculini soon to be confirmed.
