Mangala arrives for Manchester City medical

    432926_heroa.jpg

Eliaquim Mangala has arrived in England to undergo a medical and finalise a €40 million move to Manchester City, Goal can reveal.

On Friday, Goal reported that the Premier League champions had made a breakthrough in talks with Porto over a deal for the France international, having given him until Sunday to accept their offer.

Mangala arrived at The Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester's Moss Side a day later to complete a medical as he prepares to put pen to paper on a long-term deal which will earn him approximately €113,000-a-week.

The 23-year-old, who was part of the France squad at this summer's World Cup in Brazil, will go on a short holiday before joining up with the rest of the City squad for pre-season training.

The deal brings an end to a long pursuit for the English titleholders, who came close to signing Mangala in January but were ultimately frustrated by Porto's unwillingness to negotiate on a valuation.

Manuel Pellegrini has been searching for an elite defender to partner Vincent Kompany for some time, with Martin Demichelis and Joleon Lescott criticised for their performances last season and Matija Nastasic struggling for fitness.

Mangala has established himself as one of the most coveted centre-backs in European football during three seasons at Porto, though he is yet to earn a regular place in France manager Didier Deschamps starting XI.

Van Gaal reignites Manchester United Vidal interest

    430454_heroa.jpg

Manchester United will persist in their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal at the insistence of new manager Louis van Gaal, despite being told the Italian outfit want €57 million plus Nani in exchange.

United had been discouraged from their attempts to sign the Chile international after the Serie A champions demanded such a high fee.

But Van Gaal, who tried to sign the 27-year-old during his time as manager of Bayern Munich in 2011, remains a big fan of Vidal and United are now reconsidering their position.

Talks between the player's camp and Old Trafford officials are understood to have taken place this week, and United are exploring whether a deal can be agreed with Juve.

Vidal has enjoyed a successful spell in Turin thus far, winning three consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus.

An injury cast doubt over his involvement in the World Cup, but the midfielder was one of the star performers in an impressive Chile side that was knocked out of the competition by Brazil in a penalty shootout.

Van Gaal has already secured two signings this transfer window with Ander Herrera arriving from Athletic Bilbao and Luke Shaw joining from Southampton.

And United are ready to keep on spending, financing the squad overhaul partly through player sales.

Van Gaal is understood to be open to offers for a number of players this summer, with the futures of Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez all uncertain.

The 62-year-old has also told United that he will not take any holiday once Netherlands’ World Cup campaign has ended and will begin work at Carrington next week.

Manchester United & Real Madrid near Di Maria agreement

    432886_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with Real Madrid for Angel Di Maria.

The Argentina international is keen to work under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford and an agreement in principle over personal terms has been reached between United and the player.

But Madrid value Di Maria at €56 million, while United had initially hoped to secure the forward for a fee in the region of €37m.

Talks are set to resume next week with both Madrid and United confident that an agreement can be reached over a suitable transfer fee.

The 26-year-old would be United’s third signing of the summer following the arrival of midfielder Ander Hererra and former Southampton full-back Luke Shaw.

Goal understands Van Gaal is also keen for United to continue their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal as the Dutchman overhauls a squad which finished seventh in the Premier League last season.

Di Maria is currently recovering from a thigh injury and is battling to be fit for Argentina’s World Cup final against Germany on Sunday.

When questioned about his future at Madrid, Di Maria insisted last month that he wished to be kept in the dark by his agent.

"I've asked my agent not to tell me anything about the talks he's having," he told reporters. "I don't know what's going to happen with my career.

"I don't want to know anything about my future right now. I'm focusing on my national team and not on what's going on elsewhere."

    Southampton complete Pelle deal

    434276_heroa.jpg

Southampton have completed the signing of Feyenoord striker Graziano Pelle on a three-year deal.

The Italian forward becomes new Saints boss Ronald Koeman's second transfer of the summer, following Dusan Tadic to St Mary's for a fee believed to be in the region of €10 million.

The 28-year-old has worked with Koeman before, moving from Parma to the Eredivise club in 2012 and now links up with the Dutch legend for a second time.

Speaking about his move, Pelle told the club's official website: "I’m really happy that it’s finally signed.

"I had some teams interested in me, but this is going to be the best choice for me because the club wants to keep improving every year.

"The talks between us were only short in terms of how long it took to convince each other. I was pretty sure that, for me, this would be a great step.

"Ronald Koeman and I worked together for two amazing years at Feyenoord, and I hope that it will be the same here.

"There are many good things about this club other than the coach. The Premier League is amazing, and Southampton is showing year-by-year that it wants to improve.

"Last year, everyone in Europe was impressed by the performances of the team, and it’s clear that the club is growing. It’s great to be here.”

Southampton have been active in the transfer market so far this summer, selling Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert to Liverpool and Luke Shaw to Manchester United after an impressive season under Mauricio Pochettino.

And with the club looking to rebuild, Koeman expressed his delight at capturing a player he rates highly.

He said: "I had Graziano in my team for my last two years at Feyenoord. He scored a lot of goals – more than 50 in two seasons – and they brought a lot of points to the club.

"Goals mean points, and we needed a good player in that position after Rickie Lambert left.

"In terms of his qualities, he’s a tall striker with a lot of movement and he’s fast. He’s a player who gives confidence to the team because he keeps the ball, and he’s very dangerous in front of goal.

"He’s almost 29 years old, so he brings a little bit of experience to a young team.

"Overall, we’re pleased to have brought in Graziano after signing Dusan Tadic earlier this week. This shows we are committed to strengthening the team and progressing after last season.

"We know that we need some more players because we haven’t occupied all of the positions. We need more players to bring the squad to where we need and expect."

Pelle registered 55 goals in 66 games for Feyenoord in his two-year spell at the De Kuip.

Low: Argentina are more than Messi – but we will beat them

    432950_heroa.jpg

Germany boss Joachim Low believes it would be "mistake" to concentrate too much on the threat posed by Argentina captain Lionel Messi as he prepares for Sunday’s World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro.

The three-time champions come in to the game at the Maracana in fine form following their 7-1 demolition of Brazil in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday.

Consequently, while Low insists that Argentina have many dangerous players other than Messi, the 54-year-old coach is confident that his team will emerge victorious.

“This team is not only Messi. To think like that would be a mistake – they also have players like [Gonzalo] Higuain, [Angel] Di Maria and [Sergio] Aguero,” Low said in his pre-match press conference.

“I think it will be a terrific final but we know how strong we are and I believe we will win.

“I have no fear whatsoever because I know it is a match between two teams that have had fascinating duels in the past. We have seen Argentina have produced great performances in this tournament.

“We know we can write history because no European team has won in Latin America. This can be considered an additional achievement for us if we win.”

Low took over from Jurgen Klinsmann following the 2006 World Cup but he was keen to play down suggestions that Sunday’s final would be the culmination of eight years’ of work, insisting the future is bright for German football even if they lose to Argentina.

He added: “We have a mature team. We have shown what we can do and we have been marching forward over the last few years.

“This team and German football has a future whatever happens tomorrow.

“We have players who are playing at their very best and also young players coming through who will have a fantastic future

“We have young players who can play for a number of years. Right now, of course, we just want to concentrate on tomorrow’s game.”

Several clubs interested in me - Jackson Martinez

    399276_heroa.jpg

Jackson Martinez has revealed that “several clubs” are interested in prising him away from Porto.

The 27-year-old sparkled in his second full season in the Primeira Liga, scoring 20 goals in 30 league games.

Liverpool and Arsenal have been linked with the forward, with both Premier League clubs reportedly willing to meet his reported €40 million buy-out clause.

AC Milan are also said to be interested but Martinez says he has no idea where his future lies.

“I do not know what will happen,” the Colombia international told radio station La FM. "I have a contract for two more years with Porto and I know there is interest from several clubs.

“It’s normal if a player is playing well, but I have always respected my contracts. Only time will tell what will happen.”

Martinez netted twice at this summer's World Cup in Brazil, with both goals coming in his country's 4-1 Group C victory over Japan.

    Inter sign Dodo from Roma

    433380_heroa.jpg

Inter have confirmed the signing of Dodo from Roma for a total transfer fee of €9 million.

The Nerazzurri will pay their Serie A rivals an initial €1.2 million to take the defender on loan for two seasons and then a further €7.8m as part of a compulsory buy-out clause that the Serie A side will be obliged to meet as soon as the the Brazilian makes his first appearance for the club.

"FC Internazionale wish to announce the signing of Jose Rodolfo Pires Ribeiro, better known as Dodo, on loan with the possibility to purchase him in 2016.” read a statement on the San Siro side's official website.“The player has signed a contract lasting until June 2019."

Upon his arrival at the Giuseppe Meazza, Dodo credited coach Walter Mazzarri a key factor in his decision to move to Inter.“I spoke to him before I came,” the 22-year-old revealed. "His ideas and his project left me in no doubt whatsoever.

“As for San Siro, I’ve already played there and I’ve seen it full in the Coppa Italia. I’m keen to get out there but it’ll definitely be wonderful, just like the Olimpico. While Inter missed out on a Champions League place last season, Dodo is in no doubt that he can help the Nerazzurri finish in the top three this term.

"Everyone wants to play in the Champions League but I want to do so with Inter next season," he enthused. "The Champions League is the dream of every footballer."

Dodo had been deemed surplus to requirements at Roma following the arrival of former Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole on a free transfer and the acquisition of the versatile Urby Emanuelson from AC Milan.

Swansea confirm Michu talks with Napoli

    433321_heroa.jpg

Swansea City are in talks with Napoli over the transfer of forward Michu, according to chairman Huw Jenkins.

The Spaniard has been strongly linked with a move away from the Liberty Stadium in recent weeks and did not travel to the United States for the club's pre-season tour.

Jenkins has now revealed talks have taken place regarding a potential switch to Serie A.

"Napoli have enquired about Michu and we have been talking to them and to Michu's agent," he is quoted as saying by the South Wales Evening Post.

"But there are other options and nothing is finalised yet."

When asked whether the talks involved a loan or permanent deal, Jenkins added: "We are discussing various options."

Michu arrived in south Wales for a fee of €2.8 million from Rayo Vallecano in 2012 and scored 18 Premier League goals in his first season.

However, the 28-year-old endured an injury-plagued 2013-14 campaign, making just 15 top-flight starts.

Higuain: Germany should fear Argentina too

    432949_heroa.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain believes Germany will be as "worried" by the prospect of facing Argentina as they are of are taking on Joachim Low's men in Sunday's World Cup final.

The Albiceleste may have Lionel Messi within their ranks but they are the underdogs going into the game in Rio de Janeiro, primarily because of the way in which their opponents thrashed hosts Brazil 7-1 in a sensationally one-sided last-four encounter in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday.

Higuain, though, is not in the least bit daunted by the challenge facing Germany, arguing that Argentina are just as worthy participants in the biggest match in football.

“[Germany] are always true [to themselves] in big matches, but the Germans must be equally worried, because if we are also in the final, it is because we have also done well," the Napoli striker told L'Equipe.

“We will go there and we will win. People didn’t expect to see us there. Yet, however, we are there. And we can accomplish this dream of lifting the World Cup.

“And it is a dream, an opportunity, a privilege. I spoke with a team-mate who told me that to play a World Cup final was something incomparable, inexplicable - and even more so if you win!"

While the locals in attendance are expected to get behind Germany, given Brazil's rivalry with Argentina, Higuain insists that Alejando Sabella's side will not want for support.

“We know that millions and millions of Argentines are behind us and that many will be present in Rio," the forward enthused. “It has been 24 years that they have been dreaming of a World Cup final. Their support will be important for us.”

Beckham tips Messi for World Cup final starring role

    434442_heroa.jpg

David Beckham has tipped Lionel Messi to play a key role in Sunday's World Cup final and has hailed the Argentina star's winning mentality.

Messi has scored four goals and assisted another on the way to the final and will now lead his country out at the Maracana as Argentina look to beat Germany and win the tournament for the first time since 1986.

Beckham acknowledged Joachim Low's talented squad but feels the Barcelona man is the only true "star" gracing the field on Sunday.

"He's amazing," said Beckham. "He gives people so much pleasure with the way he plays and what makes him special is he plays as a team-mate as well, [he is] a good team player.

"He's got great individual skill, but winning means everything to him. If other team-mates score goals he's the first one there to celebrate with them and I think that says a lot about him.

"Playing for Argentina, I'm sure there's a certain amount of pressure, but going as far as they've gone is incredible. It means so much to him, his family and everyone else around the world, the fact Messi's going to be playing on this stage.

"Germany came to the tournament with great experience, people are not too surprised they've got as far as this. There's no particular star, they've just a great group that play well together.

"Argentina have a group of talented players who play with a lot of passion, but Lionel, I'm just excited to see him play."

Beckham also recognised the achievements of competition surprise packages Costa Rica and Colombia after they both reached the quarter-final stage for the first time in their history.

"It's been a great World Cup. The fact you've seen teams like Costa Rica and Colombia perform the way they have and some great young players coming out of the competition, it's been great to see," he said.

Schweinsteiger: Germany have the big match pedigree to win World Cup

    432689_heroa.jpg

Bastian Schweinsteiger feels the big match experience of the Germany players will help them cope with the pressure of Sunday's World Cup final against Argentina.

Germany are bidding to win their first World Cup since 1990 and their team contains many players who were involved four years ago when Low’s side were knocked out by Spain in the semi-final.

Schweinsteiger believes that the Germans’ familiarity with big occasions, for club and country, means the team is ready to beat Argentina and claim the country’s fourth World Cup triumph at the Maracana.

"We have lots of players here now who were there in 2010 but we are more experienced, not just in the national team," Schweinsteiger said.

"Since 2005 we have always reached the semi-finals of international competitions, but also we have been playing at a high level with our clubs, such as the Champions League final last year [between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund].

"We lost against Spain in 2008 but we have played in a lot of semi-finals and finals. The team is very solid now and I just have good feelings about tomorrow.

"We are looking forward to it. There is huge anticipated joy. We have no pressure. There are lots of players in the 23 who have played big finals. We are just thinking about one thing – the job we have to do tomorrow."

The Bayern Munich player will line up in central midfield against Alejandro Sabella’s men where he will come up against Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano.

While Lionel Messi is Argentina’s captain, Schweinsteiger believes Mascherano is the leader in the Albiceleste team and says the European side must keep their cool to win the final.

"Argentina are an excellent team and deserve to be in the final," he added.

"They have world class players like Messi, Aguero and Di Maria. Mascherano is like the leader of a pack of wolves. You can see the attitude he has for his country.

"We have to keep our cool, stay calm and patient. I’m quite sure that if we play to our capacity, we can beat such a top class team. We know what we are capable of."
