Monaco tell Real Madrid: We want €90m for James Rodriguez

    432134_heroa.jpg

Monaco have told Real Madrid they will need to pay €90 million [£70m] if they are to sign Colombia's World Cup sensation James Rodriguez, Goal understands.

The Ligue 1 club do not want to sell the leading scorer of Brazil 2014 although they have taken heed of James's desire to join Madrid, with the 23-year-old recently stating that he would go to the Spanish capital with his eyes closed.

As such Monaco have floated a price of €90m to the Champions League winners, a sum that would place the Colombia international just behind prospective team-mates Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo in the list of world-record transfer fees.

Goal understands that Manchester United could compete with the big-spending Liga club for James's signature and, while Madrid president Florentino Perez will attempt to negotiate the price down, the numbers are considered viable for a Galactico signing within the Santiago Bernabeu.

    435894_heroa.jpg

And Monaco, who could also see star striker Radamel Falcao move to Madrid, are in a strong position to demand a large profit for James, who only joined the club from Porto last summer and signed a five-year contract.

Toni Kroos, meanwhile, is also on the verge of signing for Madrid and confirmed on Wednesday that he is closing in on a switch to Carlo Ancelotti's side.

As a result, Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria have both been placed on the market regardless of the quality of their contributions to Madrid's Champions League triumph, with Arsenal and United both monitoring their situations.

But it is James who could be Madrid's major Galactico signing of the summer, with Madrid president Florentino Perez buoyed by the success of last summer's record acquisition of Bale.

The former Porto star scored 10 times in 38 appearances for Monaco last season as he helped the club qualify for the Champions League and lit up the World Cup with his performances for Colombia, who were eventually knocked out by Brazil at the quarter-final stage.

    Rodgers: Liverpool have made progress

    419980_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers insists belief is high within the Liverpool squad, as the Reds attempt to build on their last campaign coming in to 2014-15.

Liverpool fell agonisingly short of claiming their first league title since 1989-90 last season, finishing two points adrift of Manchester City in second spot.

Rodgers has wasted little time adding reinforcements ahead of Liverpool's return to the Champions League, with Southampton pair Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana joining the club, along with Bayer Leverkusen's Emre Can and Serbia international Lazar Markovic.

However, Liverpool's signings have been overshadowed by the departure of talisman Luiz Suarez, who left for Spanish giants Barcelona after the World Cup.

Nevertheless, Rodgers remains confident his team can continue to develop and lift the Premier League trophy.

"We'll go and do our best," Rodgers told Liverpool's official website following Wednesday's 2-1 pre-season loss to Brondby in Denmark. "Our best last year nearly won us the title.

"This year, we know it's going to be extremely competitive. Every team will strengthen and we'll be exactly the same. But the beauty for us is that we're a young group and we're bringing in young players that are hungry.

"We will progress again from last season. It's going to be a really exciting season. I've seen development in the players already in the short period of time that we've been back. This season we have the belief to go along with the quality.

"We want to improve and continually improve. We're working very hard behind the scenes, as we always do, in terms of getting the best quality players into the club.

"It's looking at the players that can come in and add the goals and add to our game. That's something that we will always look to continue to do at the club."

Liverpool kick off their league campaign against Southampton at Anfield on August 17.

BREAKING NEWS: Real Madrid complete Toni Kroos deal

    433522_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich have announced that Toni Kroos has completed his transfer to Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee.

The attacking midfielder had long been linked with a move to the Champions League holders and he has now signed a contract with Madrid until the summer of 2020.

"We would like to thank Toni for his time at Bayern Munich," Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge commented on the deal.

"We enjoyed some great successes together. We wish him and his family all the best in Madrid and at Real."

Bayern were initially keen to hold on to the 24-year-old, yet they put him up for sale after failing to reach an agreement over a contract renewal.

Manchester United also showed an interest in signing the Germany international, but Kroos eventually opted against a move to the Premier League giants in favour of Madrid.

Kroos, who played a key role in Germany's World Cup win this summer, will be presented to the media and fans on the honorary balcony at the Santiago Bernabeu at 17:00CET on Thursday.

The midfielder came through the ranks of the Hansa Rostock youth academy, but joined Bayern at the age of 16. He made over 170 official appearances for Bayern since breaking into the first team in September 2007.He also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen from January 2009 until the summer of 2010

Tottenham try to thwart Barcelona's Vertonghen interest

    434792_heroa.jpg

Tottenham are set to offer Jan Vertonghen a new contract as Mauricio Pochettino continues to build for his first season in charge at White Hart Lane.

Pochettino, appointed as Tim Sherwood's successor in May, is keen to tie the club's best players to the club ahead of the 2014-15 campaign and has already convinced Hugo Lloris to put pen to paper on a five-year contract.

Vertonghen has four years remaining on his current deal but Spurs are keen to thrash out improved terms on an extension as they bid to keep him at the club, with the likes of Barcelona monitoring his situation.

The Catalan club are believed to be in the market for a new centre-back and Vertonghen's agent has so far refused to confirm whether the Belgian intends to remain in north London beyond this season.

"Several teams are interested in Jan. I cannot confirm or deny whether Barcelona are one of them. Tottenham is not a small club," Mustapha Nakhli, his representative, told Het Nieuwsblad earlier this week.

"It’s too soon to give them an answer. Several clubs have registered their interest in Jan. We’ll see."

However, Vertonghen claimed in May that he is “happy” at Spurs and that he would work under any manager appointed in the wake of Sherwood's departure.

“I've got a couple more years at Tottenham and I'm happy, and I want to stay there, so it doesn't matter who the manager will be,” he said.

Chelsea edge ahead of Arsenal in race for Khedira

    435204_heroa.jpg

Chelsea are emerging as frontrunners in the race to sign Sami Khedira as they step up plans to reinforce their midfield.

The Blues have made contact with Real Madrid about discussing a €25 million deal for Khedira, who has only a year remaining on his contract with the Spanish giants.

Chelsea's move comes as Arsenal's pursuit of the Germany World Cup winner has stalled due to his salary demands. Khedira is believed to be pushing for a €250,000-a-week plus top-up bonuses.

That would make him comfortably the highest paid player at Emirates Stadium, where the top earners are €160,000-a-week duo Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but he would fit in with the Chelsea wage structure for A-list players.

Jose Mourinho had made Juventus star Paul Pogba his top target to partner Nemanja Matic in central midfield next season but the Italian club's €75m asking price has put off the west Londoners.

With new signing Cesc Fabregas pencilled in for the No.10 playmaker role next season, Chelsea have begun exploring Khedira as a back-up option to Pogba given his availability and reasonable transfer fee.

Real are willing to offload the 27-year-old for €25m because his contract expires in 12 months' time, when he could leave on a free transfer. The Champions League holders have failed to make any headway in agreeing a new deal with the German and on Thursday completed the signing of his countryman Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich.

Chelsea could be encouraged to bid for Pogba following Antonio Conte's shock resignation as Juve manager earlier this week, although the situation at the Serie A champions is fluid due to doubts about the future of his team-mate Arturo Vidal. It is unlikely that Juve would cash in on more than one of their two prize assets.

Arsene Wenger is ready to pursue alternatives to Khedira as he bids to recruit a proven midfield anchorman this summer, with Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin among those admired by the Arsenal manager.

The Gunners will imminently confirm the signing of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United for €10m plus add-ons and are closing in on a €4m deal for Nice goalkeeper David Ospina and a season-long loan of Atletico Madrid right-back Javi Manquillo.

Barca outcast Afellay too expensive for Feyenoord

    436012_heroa.jpg

Feyenoord coach Fred Rutten has made it clear that his club is unlikely to sign Barcelona midfielder Ibrahim Afellay as they don't have the financial resources to lure the Netherlands international away from Spain.

Afellay has been linked with a move away from Barcelona ahead of the 2014-15 season and a number of recent reports claimed that Feyenoord are interested in bringing the 28-year-old back to the Eredivisie.

Nevertheless, Rutten has stressed that a move to Feyenoord is highly unlikely at this stage.

"Ibrahim is welcome but I cannot imagine that we can afford players of his calibre," the 51-year-old coach told RTV Rijnmond.

"Of course, I would like to sign him, but I would also like to sign [Lionel] Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Thiago Silva. You have to stay realistic, though. We are working within a certain budget."

Afellay has only managed 21 appearances in La Liga since joining Barcelona for €3 million in January 2011, due to a string of injuries.

The versatile midfielder spent the 2012-13 campaign on loan at Schalke, but a recurring thigh problem prevented him from making an impact at the Bundesliga side.

Afellay's current contract with Barcelona runs until June 2015.

Herrera not at the level of Pogba or Kroos yet, admits Butt

    428252_heroa.jpg

New Manchester United signing Ander Herrera has the ability to become a “star player” at Old Trafford - even if he is not yet at the level of Toni Kroos or Paul Pogba, according to Nicky Butt.

The Red Devils activated Herrera’s buyout clause at Athletic Bilbao to bolster their midfield ahead of Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge, with the 24-year-old signing a four-year deal.United had been linked with both Pogba, who left the club as a 19-year-old in 2012, and Real Madrid-bound Kroos but Butt, now a coach at the club, admitted that these types of player are more difficult to land.

“You can all talk about Paul Pogba or Toni Kroos or whoever but these kind of players are not easy to get,” Butt told the Manchester Evening News. “So you have to widen your net and Herrera is a bonus.“He is at a level where he can play at a club like Manchester United and given a bit of time he can excel. He can become a star player for us.

“I do think he has the ability to do that. He can become a big influence on our midfield. You will have to be patient with him. You cannot expect miracles from him straight away just because there is a big price tag attached."That’s not the lad’s fault. It is just the way football has gone. That’s between the two clubs and shouldn’t be allowed to put pressure on him.

"Given the time and the chance to develop, he can become a very good player. We think he can achieve very good things. It is a great signing for United and I am very pleased. I am sure the fans will take to him.”Butt hopes Herrera’s main contribution will be to improve the level of United’s play in possession as they continue to search for Paul Scholes’ long-term successor following the playmaker’s retirement last year.

“[Herrera’s] ability to pass and keep the ball is great,” Butt added. “You can see the Spaniard in him because they are always so comfortable on the ball.
“They can take the ball in any situation. It doesn’t bother them. They want to keep the ball moving and play things simple [sic]. He looks like he will be a very good player for the club.

“He was at the level where you just had to take note of this player because there are not many top midfielders you can get, in my opinion.”

Liverpool set to table improved Bony bid

    434485_heroa.jpg

Liverpool are ready to table an improved offer for Swansea striker Wilfried Bony as they continue to reshape their squad ahead of the 2014-15 season, Goal understands.

Swansea are determined to maximise any potential fee for Bony and are looking to get around €24 million [£19m] for the star from Liverpool, who have money to spend having agreed a deal to sell Luis Suarez to Barcelona for €95m [£75m].

Goal understands Liverpool have so far offered €16m [£12.5m] for the Ivory Coast international, but are now ready to raise it to €19m [£15m], plus significant add-ons.

Bony, who scored two goals at the World Cup in addition to his 26 club goals for 2013-14, has also attracted interest from Tottenham, and the north Londoners remain interested in acquiring the 25-year-old.

Swansea are aware of the interest from the two clubs and are open to a sale, having signed Bafetimbi Gomis from Lyon, but are intent on not letting him go on the cheap.

In addition to Gomis, the Welsh club also have forwards Marvin Emnes and Rory Donnelly on their books and have been linked with a €6m [£5m] move for Watford striker Troy Deeney.

Liverpool still have money to spend and have already signed four players, with Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic all moving to Anfield in this close-season as the club seek to rebuild following the departure of Suarez.

    Borussia Dortmund sign Ginter

    420204_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund have completed the transfer of Matthias Ginter from Freiburg for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of €10 million.

Freiburg president Fritz Keller revealed earlier this week that they were in advanced talks with BVB and the 20-year-old has now signed a contract until June 2019 after passing his medical.

"Matthias is a strong and versatile German youngster who has always been a very interesting player to us," Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc commented.

"We are very pleased and proud that Matthias has decided to join Dortmund.

"BVB are playing in three different competitions, are full of ambition and have deliberately decided to start the new season with four strong centre-backs."

Ginter, who was part of the Germany team that was crowned world champions earlier this month, came through the ranks of the Freiburg youth academy and had developed into a key player at the Mage Solar Stadion since making his first-team debut in January 2011.

"This is a dream come true for me. I have always been a Dortmund fan and will now get the chance to wear the jersey of my favourite team," Ginter said.

"I want to take the next step in my development here at Dortmund. I am looking forward to the great atmosphere at the Signal Iduna Park. I have only heard positive things about Dortmund and I'm keen to get started after my holiday."

Ginter will be wearing the No.28 jersey at Dortmund.

Real Madrid are my priority, says Navas

    432459_heroa.jpg

Costa Rica international Keylor Navas has admitted that he is keen to leave Levante for Real Madrid ahead of the 2014-15 season.

The goalkeeper initially appeared to be on his way to Bayern Munich after Levante vice-president Tomas Perez claimed that a transfer to the Bundesliga champions was all but done.

Nevertheless, Navas has made it clear that he would prefer a move to the Santiago Bernabeu side after Madrid also agreed to meet his €10 million buyout clause.

"Real Madrid are my priority. Everything else gets put on hold for Madrid," the 27-year-old was quoted as saying by Marca.

Navas was one of the revelations of the 2013-14 La Liga campaign as he helped Levante to a 10th-place finish with a string of fine performances.

The former Saprissa and Albacete man further impressed at the World Cup, guiding Costa Rica to the quarter-finals, and he now seems destined to continue his career at Madrid.

Mkhitaryan: Champions League qualification is Dortmund's main goal

    391222_heroa.jpg

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has stressed that Borussia Dortmund's main goal for the 2014-15 campaign is to qualify for the Champions League, while they also want to go far in the DFB Pokal and Europe once again.

Jurgen Klopp's men have had to settle for second place in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich for the past two seasons, but Mkhitaryan has made it clear that they are not thinking about dethroning the Bavarians this term.

"Our main goal in the Bundesliga is to qualify for the Champions League again," Mkhitaryan told Sport Bild.

"Would we be satisfied with second place behind Bayern? We are not thinking about other clubs. Every player tries to finish first. But I will not go out and say that we will win the title.

"We have to stay realistic. We must qualify for the Champions League and we'll see where we end at the end of the season.

"We want to reach the DFB Pokal final again, just like last season.

"And our goal in the Champions League is to reach at least the round of 16."

Dortmund made it to the quarter-finals of European club football's elite competition last season.

Terry: Fabregas can replace Lampard at Chelsea

    426784_heroa.jpg

John Terry is confident that Cesc Fabregas can replace Frank Lampard at Chelsea this season.

The 36-year-old was allowed to leave the club this summer upon the expiration of his contract after agreeing a move to MLS side New York City.

Fabregas was subsequently signed from Barcelona on a five-year deal for a fee of around €38 million [£30m] and Terry is confident the Spaniard will be able to fill the boots of the club's all-time record goalscorer.

“He’s a very good signing,” Terry told the club's official magazine. “He is great on the ball, a great box-to-box player, he scores an awful lot of goals as well and he has got an aggressive streak in him too – I certainly remember that from his Arsenal days.

“I’m sure he is going to fit in really well at Chelsea and do well in the years to come.”

Lampard announced his decision to leave the club in June and Terry admits he was upset to see one of his closest friends - and Ashley Cole - depart Stamford Bridge.

“It feels different coming in and Lamps not being sat next to me,” he added.

“We have sat next to each other in the changing room since... well, since he signed for the club really. I’ve become really close to Lamps and Ash and they were my two best mates at the club.

“So I’m really sad to see arguably the best player the club has ever had, in Lamps, move on, for what he brought to the dressing room and as a mate.

“You understand that you all get older, but you just hope that point doesn’t come.”

Diego Costa and Filipe Luis have also been signed this summer to add to Fabregas' acquisition and Terry is confident heading into the new season, believing they can add another trophy to their ever-expanding cabinet.

“I think we should be very competitive,” he said. “We were close last year, but just unlucky at times.

"With the signings we have made and a couple of younger players who I think will surprise a few people this year, I think this should be a very good year.

"We want to win trophies – that is always the aim from the outset for me.

“I can see a lot more teams in the mix. First and foremost, though, we need to be solid, both home and away, because I think we dropped too many points against teams we shouldn’t have [last season]."
