Sunderland have agreed terms with Liverpool for Borini, reveals Poyet

    435909_heroa.jpg

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has confirmed that the club have agreed terms with Liverpool to sign Fabio Borini on a permanent basis.

The 23-year-old played a big part in helping the Wearsiders to preserve their Premier League status while on loan at the Stadium of Light in 2013-14, making 32 league appearances and scoring seven goals.

With personal terms still to be discussed with the striker, Poyet is hopeful that he can persuade the Italian to return to the Black Cats.

"We've agreed terms with Liverpool and we are waiting for the documents to be signed and then we'll move on from there," he told Sky Sports News.

"Like any other deal you do, first you need to sort out the clubs and then you start working with the player.

"I'm hoping we can have him because he knows how much it would mean for us to have a player like Fabio."

Borini started for Liverpool in a 2-1 friendly win over Preston on Saturday.

Van Gaal will make Manchester United an attacking force, says Woodward

    436245_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal will get Manchester United back playing attractive attacking football, according to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Much of United's glittering success over the past two decades has been built on the club's attacking philosophy, but David Moyes, Van Gaal's Old Trafford predecessor, was more pragmatic in his approach during his ill-fated 10 months in charge.

Dutchman Van Gaal – who has won league titles in Netherlands, Spain and Germany – is now tasked with rebuilding and Woodward thinks the 62-year-old will have no trouble winning over United supporters and will also help develop the next generation of stars.

Speaking at the end of a week in which Van Gaal formally took charge at United, Woodward told MUTV: "He's got incredible energy and very importantly he likes attacking football.

"If you remember the Barcelona team [Van Gaal managed] in the late '90s, who played incredible, attacking football, and those games we had against them in '98-99 [when United won the Champions League], that's the kind of football Manchester United fans love.

"It's part of our DNA. The second part of what he likes is giving youth a chance. He's got a track record littered with giving young players a break in the first team, who have gone on to be stars. "Clearly that's Manchester United's philosophy and we want him to continue with that.

"We've got someone who has confidence in himself about making difficult decisions and, when you boil down what makes a great manager, one of the key characteristics is making difficult decisions and we've clearly got a manager who can do that."Woodward believes Van Gaal has already made a big impact behind the scenes at the former Premier League champions.

He added: "There is real unity in the squad and Louis clearly has something to give in terms of the special way he has with his players when it comes to binding the team together. "We've seen that already with the steps he's taken with the preparation and the training and the things going on around that.

"He's going to deliver exactly what we expect him to deliver and in conjunction with Ryan [Giggs, United's assistant manager], who has that great understanding of all these players."

Manchester United target Vermaelen could leave Arsenal, says Wenger

    425866_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that club captain Thomas Vermaelen, a target for Manchester United, could leave this summer.

The Belgian fell behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order last term and the Red Devils are set to increase their offer for the out-of-favour defender after having had a £6 million bid rejected.

With the skipper's future in doubt, the Gunners boss noted that he would look to sign a replacement if necessary.

"I cannot guarantee [that he will stay]," Wenger told reporters of Vermaelen, "but, should he go, I would bring another centre-back in for sure."

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claimed on Thursday that, even though a return to Arsenal could have been on the cards, new Blues signing Cesc Fabregas' first choice was Stamford Bridge but the Frenchman is not concerned by his comments.

He remarked: "I think people came out and said [Fabregas] wanted to go to Chelsea. I don't know who tells the truth here or not. He landed where he wanted to go."

Even without former captain Fabregas, Wenger has plenty of midfielders at his disposal and is looking forward to seeing how the competition for places shakes out.

"There's big competition but there are many players with a lot of talent that didn't play many games last year," he observed.

"[Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain was out for a long time, [Jack] Wilshere was injured and [Abou] Diaby was injured for the whole season. They are back now and it's very difficult to predict how fit they will be at the beginning of the season. There's a big competition in the middle of the park, yes."

Arsenal's German contingent – Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski – will return from the World Cup as winners this summer and Wenger expects to reap the benefits.

"What is good is that [Germany] won the World Cup so their confidence should be stronger," he continued.

"We won the FA Cup with the last game of the season, they went away and won the World Cup. Winning makes you only stronger and more confident and hopefully we will benefit from that in the new season."

Chelsea youngster Omeruo confirms Middlesbrough return

    412899_heroa.jpg

Chelsea youngster Kenneth Omeruo has revealed he is set to return to Middlesbrough on loan this season.

Omeruo, who started all four of Nigeria's matches in this summer's World Cup in Brazil, made 14 appearances for the Championship side after joining on loan for the second half of last season.

Earlier this month Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka - formerly Jose Mourinho's assistant at Real Madrid - confirmed he expected Omeruo to return to the Riverside Stadium for the coming campaign.

And on Sunday the 20-year-old - who can play as a centre-back or right-back - took to Twitter to reveal his excitement at returning to the North East to work with Karanka once more.

Shaw will only improve at Manchester United, says Irwin

    429529_heroa.jpg

Manchester United legend Denis Irwin believes Luke Shaw will prove to be a "fantastic" signing for the Old Trafford club.

Shaw, who was part of the England World Cup squad this summer and started the final group game against Costa Rica, has moved to United from Southampton for €37.5 million.

And Irwin is expecting big things from the teenage left-back, who only turned 19 earlier in July.

"He has pace, is great going forward and is still only young," Irwin told reporters in Los Angeles during the club's pre-season tour of the USA.

"He is going to be a fantastic signing for years to come."

Irwin is unfazed by the €37.5m United paid to land Shaw amid interest from Chelsea due to the player's potential.

He said: "Market forces dictate what you have to pay for players and there was talk of Chelsea being in for him.

"We have to accept he will make mistakes defensively. But he has been playing in the Premier League for the last two years with Southampton and he is only going to get better."

:yes:Van Persie will be next Man Utd captain - Bryan Robson

    423056_heroa.jpg

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson is confident that Louis van Gaal will make Robin van Persie his captain at Old Trafford this season.

This summer has seen the departures of several senior figures from United, with previous club captain Nemanja Vidic joining Inter and Rio Ferdinand signing for QPR, while Patrice Evra appears set for a move to Juventus.

Some suggested that Wayne Rooney's new bumper five-year deal at Old Trafford in February included a clause which ensured he would inherit the captaincy once Vidic departed.

But Robson, one of the most iconic captains in United's history, believes Van Gaal will give his countryman Van Persie the honour, having entrusted him with the armband for Netherlands at this summer's World Cup.

"Robin was his captain of Holland, so that is an obvious one," Robson told the Press Association. "I would be really surprised if he didn't give Robin it."

Robson is also confident that United will recover from last season's disastrous campaign under Van Gaal this term.

"The fans and the club were disappointed last year, but nobody hurts more than players," he added.

"I know these players. They have won the title, the Champions League, and a lot of them were really disappointed about what happened so the lads that are still at the club will want to bounce back, they will want to prove to people that they are top players and they can win things."

Napoli close in on Lucas Leiva loan

    433093_heroa.jpg

Napoli are close to completing a loan deal for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.

The Serie A side have reached an agreement with Liverpool over a season-long move for the Brazilian, who could reunite with former Anfield boss Rafa Benitez at Anfield.

The deal would also involve a permanent transfer clause, which would be triggered once Lucas has played a certain number of games for Napoli.

But the Italian club are keen to lower the potential transfer fee, with Liverpool understood to want €12.5 million for the 27-year-old.

Lucas moved to Anfield from Gremio in 2007 and became a regular fixture in the Liverpool side under Benitez, though injuries have stalled his career.

But the signing of Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, and the return to fitness of Joe Allen, who was also signed by current Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, could see Lucas' first team opportunities limited next season.

Liverpool have also completed the signings of Southampton pair Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, as well as former Benfica winger Lazar Markovic.

The Merseyside outfit are also close to completing the signing of Loic Remy from QPR as Rodgers prepares his squad for Champions League football and the loss of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

Vidic makes Inter bow in narrow victory

    436931_heroa.jpg

Nemanja Vidic made his first appearance for Inter in Sunday's 1-0 win over Lega Pro 1 side Prato.

The former Manchester United captain was named by Walter Mazzarri as part of a strong Inter side, playing in a back three at the Stadio La Pineta in Pinzolo.

Vidic will face much tougher tests over the coming weeks in Inter's close-season preparations but played the first half before substitute Ibrahima Mbaye scored the only goal of the game in the second half.

The 19-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Livorno, headed home from a corner to make it two friendly wins from two for Inter.

Mazzarri's side got their close-season campaign up and running with a 6-1 victory over Trentino last week but were made to work much harder by Prato. Mauro Icardi had the first opportunity - slicing a shot wide of goal with 11 minutes gone - before Mateo Kovacic dragged an effort off target following a surging run.
Prato, while stoic at the back, struggled to muster opportunities as they went in level at the break.

Vidic, Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Samir Handanovic made way for Marco Andreolli, Yann M'Vila and Juan Pablo Carrizo at half-time with Mazzarri making further changes throughout the second half. The crucial one, however, was Mbaye's - the young defender nodding the winner within 60 seconds of his introduction.

Recently appointed captain Andrea Ranocchia was next to be taken off as Mazzarri's men looked to gear up for the International Champions Cup where they will meet Real Madrid, Manchester United and Roma.

    Juventus and Lazio chasing Astori

    299213_heroa.jpg

Cagliari sporting director Francesco Marroccu has revealed the club are in talks with Juventus and Lazio over a deal for Davide Astori.

The defender is widely expected to move on before the start of the new season and a host of clubs have been linked with the centre-back.

Marroccu has confirmed talks have been held with both Juve and Lazio and it is unclear where the 27-year-old will start the 2014-15 campaign."We are in negotiations with both Lazio and Juventus," he told Il Messaggero.

"The Juve interest has been going for some time and did not coincide with the arrival of new Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

"At the moment we cannot say whether one club or the other has the advantage. Negotiations will continue by phone, so no meetings are planned over the next few days."

The Italy international has also been linked with Premier League sides Tottenham and Southampton.
