    'Ince right to snub Inter'

    432900_heroa.jpg

Tom Ince's decision to turn down Inter in favour of Hull City did not come as a surprise to fellow summer signing Jake Livermore.

The Liverpool academy graduate attracted interest from a host of clubs, with 18-time Serie A champions among his suitors.

Talks with the San Siro giants reached an advanced stage, but Ince decided to stay closer to home, swapping Blackpool for Hull.

Livermore, who was on loan at the KC Stadium last season, walked away from a long-term contract at Tottenham and he respects the decision taken by Ince, though he only offered a wry smile when asked if he would have taken the same one.

"It's a great opportunity for him to come here and play Premier League football," Livermore, Hull's record signing, told Perform. "He's got great talent and to share that here with us and progress would be great.

"I've had so many people when I made it apparent I wanted to join Hull saying, 'There's bigger clubs you could join'. At the end of the day, if a player is happy with where he wants to go, happy with the manager and has a good set of lads around him, that's what it's about.

"It's also about challenging yourself in life sometimes. If I wanted the easy option I could have stayed at Tottenham and seen the rest of my three or four years out that I had.

"For me, I wanted to be part of something and obviously help Hull City and me go in the right direction, which is up."

Morata suffers knee injury in training

    436759_heroa.jpg

Alvaro Morata made an inauspicious start to his Juventus career after picking up a knee injury on his first day of training.

The young Spanish forward sealed his €20 million move to the Serie A champions on Saturday from Real Madrid, only to suffer the setback on Monday.

The 21-year-old limped from the training pitch complaining of pain in his knee and is now awaiting the results of further tests to determine the extent of the damage."During training this afternoon Alvaro Morata has reported a sprain in his left knee," Juventus confirmed on their official website. "His condition will be evaluated tomorrow."

Morata will be hoping to receive the all clear from the medical staff as he looks to settle quickly at Juve and fight Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente for a regular starting spot under Massimiliano Allegri.

Juve's new coach replaced Antonio Conte on Wednesday and made Morata his first signing as he looks to continue the period of success that has brought three-consecutive Scudetti.

A lack of regular first-team football hampered his progress in Madrid, though he was thought of highly enough for Real to retain an option to buy him back until the end of the 2016-17 season.

Tottenham edge ahead of Arsenal in race for Schneiderlin

    437010_heroa.jpg

Tottenham have stolen a march on Arsenal in the race to sign Morgan Schneiderlin, with the Southampton midfielder swayed by the "great future" the north Londoners have ahead of them under Mauricio Pochettino.

Arsenal opened discussions over a deal to sign Schneiderlin last week but north London rivals Spurs are also in talks to sign the 24-year-old and believe they are favourites for his signature.

The £18 (€22.7) million-rated France international is emerging as Tottenham's leading target for the summer transfer window as Pochettino looks to improve his squad ahead of the new season and the clubs have been in discussions for several weeks.

Pochettino left the Saints to become Tottenham’s new head coach in May and the pair’s close relationship is key to the deal for Schneiderlin, who has three years remaining on his contract but has told Southampton he wants to leave.

Schneiderlin has spoken glowingly of his improvement under Pochettino and believes re-uniting with the Argentine would be a better career move than moving to Arsenal.

"I think a manager like that is good for every club," Schneiderlin told Goal. "With the quality Tottenham have, Mauricio Pochettino will get the best out of each player.

"He came in and made Southampton play and now Tottenham have a great future.

"He improved me very much. He improved the whole squad and improved me as a player. He's a great coach and good man and it's a shame Southampton lost him."

Sydney FC 0-4 Newcastle: Debutant Riviere on target in rout

    437520_heroa.jpg

Emmanuel Riviere scored his first goal for Newcastle United as they saw off Sydney FC 4-0 at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Tuesday.

The French striker moved to St James' Park from Monaco last week and was handed his debut by Alan Pardew for the first game of Newcastle's tour of New Zealand.

Having been beaten by Oldham Athletic in their first pre-season outing, Siem de Jong got Newcastle off to an ideal start with an early opener.

He took advantage of an Ivan Necevski error before Riviere opened his Newcastle account with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa getting in on the act before the break.

Both sides made plenty of changes at the interval and in the second half, with chances few and far between as a result. There was time, however, for Adam Armstrong to add a fourth and cap a comfortable outing for his side.

Having started brightly, Massadio Haidara and Rolando Aarons looked lively as they both whipped in dangerous crosses that came to nothing.

After 19 minutes Newcastle were handed a gift by Sydney goalkeeper Necevski who dawdled on a simple back pass and allowed Riviere to take possession.

He coolly played it to De Jong, who sidefooted home to score for a second consecutive game before the Premier League side doubled their lead seven minutes later.

Yoan Gouffran was the architect as he crossed for Riviere to register his first goal for the club and the goals continued as Yanga-Mbiwa's deflected strike beat Necevski all ends up.

Having coasted to a 3-0 lead at the break, Pardew opted to withdraw De Jong at half-time and Riviere early in the second period.

Corey Gameiro then went close with a curled effort just after the hour on a rare burst forward for the Australian side.

While it looked as though the A-League outfit would shut Newcastle out in the second half, their superior cutting edge proved the difference as Armstrong prodded home from inside the area late on.

Criscito will not join Milan, says agent

    436405_heroa.jpg

Domenico Criscito's representative Andrea D'Amico has made it clear that the Zenit St Petersburg defender will not be joining AC Milan this summer.

D'Amico revealed earlier this month that Milan had made an enquiry about the availability of the 27-year-old, with Criscito himself stressing that he would happily take a paycut in order to return to Serie A.

However, the defender's current club have no intention of letting go of Criscito at this stage.

"Criscito will definitely stay at Zenit," D'Amico told Radio Kiss Kiss.

"Villas-Boas knows him very well, both from a personal point of view and as a player. He does not have any intention to sell Domenico and will even make him one of the team's key players.

"Zenit don't need any money. They only sell players whom they deem surplus to requirements."

The left-back started his professional career with Genoa and also enjoyed a spell with Juventus before leaving Serie A for Zenit St Petersburg in June 2011.

Criscito has a contract with Zenit until the summer of 2016.

    Tiago signs new Atletico deal

    437276_heroa.jpg

Out-of-contract midfielder Tiago has re-signed with Atletico Madrid after opting against leaving the Spanish champions.

The Portuguese's previous deal expired at the end of June and he had been strongly linked with a move back to Chelsea to work under former boss Jose Mourinho.

But, having considered his options, he has decided not to join the exodus from the Vicente Calderon this summer and penned a two-year deal.

The 33-year-old is now looking forward to repeating last season's La Liga triumph, telling the club's official website: "I felt proud because we'd had an incredible season, but I thought it was time to close a cycle.

"I had the opportunity to play in various international leagues and I took some time to assess the various options during the summer, but at the time of taking the final decision, it was clear to me that Atleti was the only right choice.
"During these weeks many false things have been said about me, but that doesn't change anything. Since the season ended, I had not completely forgotten Atleti nor had the club completely forgotten about me.

"The boss (Diego Simeone) always left the door open for me and now I'm very happy because I know that I've made the right choice."I want to thank the club very much for waiting for me and for offering me the opportunity to stay here. I look forward to helping the team in every way I can."

Tiago's decision will be a relief to Simeone, who has lost leading scorer Diego Costa (Chelsea), David Villa (New York City), Filipe Luis (Chelsea) and loanee Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea) since the end of last season.

Tiago will now link up with his team-mates at Atletico's pre-season training camp in Segovia before the club open their competitive campaign against city rivals Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Supercopa on August 19.
