Reus could return to team training 'in two or three weeks', says Klopp

    395883_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Marco Reus could return to full team training as early as next month.

Reus suffered a ligament tear in Germany's World Cup warm-up match against Armenia in June, ruling him out of the tournament, and sporting director Michael Zorc has said this week that the player is still expected to return to action in September.

Klopp feels that Reus could make a return to team training in a matter of weeks after his ankle has shown positive signs of progress.

Speaking to Bild, Klopp said: "It's always a good feeling to see the guys running again. This is great. So far, the healing process has been optimal.

"Maybe Marco can get into the team training again in two or three weeks."

Reus scored 23 goals for Dortmund last season, helping BVB to a second-placed Bundesliga finish behind Bayern Munich.

However, Klopp added that there would be no rush for the forward to return to action.

"We will not put Marco under pressure. We will give him all the time he needs," he said.

Guardiola: We tried to convince Kroos to stay

    385954_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola says the club did everything they could to convince Toni Kroos to sign a new deal.

The 24-year-old moved to Real Madrid this month after talks with Bayern over a new deal at the Allianz Arena had stalled earlier this year.

Guardiola admits the Bundesliga champions did their utmost to convince the World Cup winner to stay but has wished him well in his new career in Spain.

"We tried to convince him to stay at the club but I understand. He is young and wants new challenges. It is his decision and we have to respect that," he told a press conference.

"I hope he is happy in Madrid. It was an honour to be his coach. I wish the very best to him and his family. At the same time I want to say thank you for what he did last season."

Guardiola went on to call for patience from supporters concerning new striker Robert Lewandowski, despite the Poland international scoring on his debut in pre-season.

"Maybe he will need some time but he has the quality, he did everything to come to this club," added the former Barcelona boss.

"I am here to support him. He will have the opportunity to have a good life with his family over here in Munich. The rest will come by itself but we will need time - a change like this is never easy.

"He will get the time that he needs here."

Guardiola guided his side to the domestic double in his first season in charge of Bayern, while a number of his first-team stars went on to lift the World Cup with Germany in Brazil this summer.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed Guardiola would have few problems motivating the squad to achieve even greater success in 2014-15, but the 43-year-old has conceded it could be a tough task.

"If you have won some titles, you become a little bit more loose and relaxed," he added.

"That is the challenge for a coach - and it is a big challenge. We have to maintain the level of last year with this team.

"That is going to be quite difficult as a lot of important players were at the World Cup. It is a huge challenge, but I want to take it."

    Roma complete deal for Astori

    327995_heroa.jpg

Roma have completed the signing of defender Davide Astori from Cagliari, the Sardinian club have announced.

The centre-back has joined on a year-long loan deal, with Rudi Garcia's men retaining the option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.

"The club announces it has sold Davide Astori to AS Roma on a one-year loan with the right to redemption," a statement on Cagliari's official website read.

"Cagliari thanks Astori for the professionalism, devotion and gratitude he has show until his last moment in red and blue."

Astori had only recently agreed a new three-year contract with Cagliari after an impressive Serie A season in 2013-14.

"I have been here six years now and I've grown up and matured while in Sardinia," he said this week.

"I wanted to show my gratitude to Cagliari. I thank president [Tommaso] Giulini: it is a decision we took together."

Garcia had previously confirmed his side were still in the hunt for defensive reinforcements after signing full-back Ashley Cole earlier this summer.

Astori follows Cole and fellow new signings Seydou Keita, Urby Emanuelson and Juan Iturbe to Stadio Olimpico.

Barca chance has come a little late - Mathieu

    437980_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Mathieu revealed that he feels his move to Barcelona is a "reward" for his whole career, although that it has come a few years later than he might have wished.

The 30-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the option of an additional season, with Valencia reluctantly agreeing to sell one of their prized assets for €20 million.

"Joining Barca is a reward for my whole career," he told the media at his unveiling. "I worked very hard to get here. The chance comes maybe a bit late, but I'll enjoy it.

"I did everything to join Barcelona, it's a joy to be here. I'm very motivated, I've come here purely to win trophies."

Mathieu spoke with excitement about the next phase of his career and revealed he had spoken to former Valencia team-mate Alba and new boss Luis Enrique even before the transfer was agreed.

"Jordi Alba insisted that I join," he told reporters. "He said it's a great club and that I would feel good here.

"I spoke to Luis Enrique a month ago - he wants me to play as a centre-back and showed that he really believes in me.

"I like Barcelona's game because I like to play football. Just kicking the ball away is not really my thing."

Mathieu will wear the No. 24 shirt at Camp Nou and battle it out for a place alongside Gerard Pique at the heart of the back four, though he can also be used on the left of the defence.

Vidic urges Inter to bid for Hernandez

    436794_heroa.jpg

Nemanja Vidic has urged Inter to sign Manchester United striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez.

The Mexico international joined up with Louis van Gaal's squad for their pre-season tour of the United States earlier this week, although his future at Old Trafford remains unclear after starting just six Premier League games last season.

And Vidic, who joined Inter this summer after spending eight years at United, believes his former team-mate would be a welcome arrival at the Serie A club.

"These things are up to clubs," Vidic told reporters.

"Obviously, Chicharito will be a good signing for every club and we'd be glad to have him.

"Now we have to focus on this group to get the Europa League qualification. It's not the Champions League but it's a very nice competition with a lot of good European teams."

Ribery ready to return, says Guardiola

    406700_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery could make his return from injury for Bayern Munich this weekend, Pep Guardiola has revealed.

The Frenchman missed the World Cup due to a back injury but, after training with the German champions this week, he could have some involvement against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday in the Telekom Cup.

"Ribery has trained well this week, I think he can play a couple of minutes in Hamburg," said Guardiola in a press conference.

With pre-season well underway, Guardiola also rejected claims that the late return of Germany's World Cup winners, including Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Manuel Neuer, could have a detrimental effect on the squad.

"We have to adjust ourselves to the current situation," Guardiola added. "We will grow step by step."

Bayern return to competitive action in the German Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund on August 13.

Bale: I want to improve everything next season

    438111_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale says he wants to improve every aspect of his performances in his second season in Spain.

Bale struggled initially for form and fitness after missing much of pre-season following his world record €100 million move from Tottenham last summer, though he went on to develop a devastating understanding with fellow attackers Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Yet despite scoring in both the finals of the Copa del Rey and Champions League, the 25-year-old thinks there is a lot more he can give on the pitch.

"I want to improve every season: give more assists, score more goals, I want to improve everything," said Bale at a press conference in California.

"It was disappointing not being in the World Cup, but I had a seven-week break and I could do a full pre-season.

"My adaptation last year was hard because I had no pre-season. This season I feel I am training well. We hope the preparation will help us all to achieve the goals this season.

"When you first arrive it is difficult. But many of the players speak English and this has been very helpful to me. It was all a huge change. It took a little time, but over time I have found it very comfortable."

Bale also dismissed suggestions that the players are under more pressure after their cup double last season.

"It's an exciting time when you are the best team in Europe," said the Wales star.

"I do not know if there will be more pressure this season, but every member of this team wants to win everything. We are more hungry than ever. We also want to retain our Champions League title.

"The fact is that we have a great spirit in the team, we help outside and inside the club. It is difficult to repeat the challenge of winning the Champions League, but we hope to repeat it."

:(Vidal: I'm not going to Manchester

    437492_heroa.jpg

Arturo Vidal has ruled out a move to Manchester United but says he does not know if he will stay at Juventus.

Goal understands Manchester United were preparing a €54m bid for the Chile international after new manager Louis van Gaal approved a move for the 27-year-old.

However, Vidal now appears to have ended any chance of a switch to Old Trafford by insisting he will not move to Manchester, although he admits he could still leave Juventus.

"I don't know if I will stay at Juventus, I'm happy here in Turin," he told Sky Italy.

"I will talk with Allegri on Monday. I'm not going to Manchester."

The Turin side have previously insisted they do not want to be parted with their key men, Vidal or Paul Pogba, but warned a large big would have to be considered.

"Our strategy is clear; we want to keep all our best players, including Vidal and Pogba," Pavel Nedved told Tuttosport. "We don't want to sell anyone, especially Vidal.

"Certainly, if there were a high bid for them, we'd have to think about it but we don't want to sell our champions.

"We want to be competitive in the Champions League and the only sales are to be players who are not part of our plans."

Official: Lampard completes New York City FC move

    410257_heroa.jpg

Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has completed a move to New York City FC.

The 36-year-old will earn €113,000-a-week with the newly-formed MLS franchise, where he will join former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star David Villa on a two-year deal.

"It ticked all the boxes personally for me. It’s a very exciting challenge in life terms," Lampard told reporters at a press conference on Thursday.

"I had a fantastic 13 years at Chelsea but it was a good time for myself and Chelsea that I moved on.

"Having spoken to people at this club and seen the vision - I've seen a real long-term plan and I want to be part of that. I want to keep testing myself."

Goal understands that Lampard agreed terms with New York City FC last month and visited Manchester City's Carrington training base on the same weekend as Villa - with the Premier League champions linked with the MLS club and Melbourne City under the City Football Group umbrella.

New York City FC were also hopeful of landing Barcelona midfielder Xavi although Goal understands the 34-year-old is set to remain at Camp Nou for another season after last-ditch talks with Luis Enrique and president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

    437690_heroa.jpg

Lampard, meanwhile, could follow in Steven Gerrard's footsteps in announcing his retirement from England duty in the coming days.

The midfielder has earned 106 caps for his country but suggested recently that he is considering his international future, with Liverpool skipper Gerrard having announced his decision to end his Three Lions career on Monday.

"In terms of England, my main priority was getting my personal future sorted out" said Lampard. "Now I have to think about England and make a decision. Now I know where I’m playing my football it won’t be long."

'Nothing is done' with Di Maria - Blanc

    432884_heroa.jpg

Laurent Blanc has refused to reveal whether Paris Saint-Germain have held talks over a possible move for Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria.

Di Maria was one of the outstanding performers in Carlo Ancelotti's Champions League-winning side last season but his future at the club is under threat following the marquee signings of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.

New Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is an avowed admirer of the 26-year-old and the Red Devils agreed personal terms in principle with the player over a summer move to Old Trafford earlier this month.

But PSG have since become the frontrunners to sign the Argentina international due to their superior financial resources and the offer of Champions League football, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reportedly holding talks in Madrid with the Spanish giants.

When questioned, however, Blanc was unwilling to shed any further light on Di Maria's transfer.

"I'll leave you to speculate," he told reporters. "At the moment nothing is done.

"Are there negotiations? It's not for me to say, but for the board of the club."

Despite Financial Fair Play sanctions, PSG have already splashed out €50 million to bring David Luiz from Chelsea and on Wednesday confirmed the signing of Serge Aurier from Toulouse on a one-year loan deal with an option to buy.

    Eliseu leaves Malaga for Benfica

    438359_heroa.jpg

Portuguese champions Benfica have confirmed the signing of experienced full-back Eliseu on a two-year deal from La Liga club Malaga.

The 30-year-old former Portugal international had been linked with a move to the Estadio da Luz after gradually falling out of favour under Bernd Schuster and Javier Gracia in Andalusia. The left-back can also operate as a winger and will again link up with coach Jorge Jesus, who he worked under at Belenenses.

From there, he went on to spend time at Malaga and Lazio before returning to La Rosaleda for a second stint with the club. "In these years I spent in Portugal and now Spain I evolved as a player and I want to continue," he told Benfica's official website.

"I'll now be trained by someone as passionate and tactical as Jorge Jesus."Since winning the title last term, Benfica have been active in the transfer market with the likes of Victor Andrade and Luis Felipe arriving.

However, Jesus has lost quality players in the form of Ezequiel Garay, Lazar Markovic and Jan Oblak.

    438365_heroa.jpg

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has extended his contract with Al Ain until 2018, the UAE side have announced on their official website.

The former Sunderland striker had two years left on his four-year contract, but the 28-year-old sealed the improved deal on Thursday evening. He has been the leading goalscorer in the Gulf Region over the past three years.

The ‘Baby Jet’, who increased his World Cup goal tally to six in Brazil to become Africa’s leading goalscorer at the global showpiece, is delighted to have committed to the Garden City club.

“I am very happy to extend my contract here until 2018 and I thank the club’s board, management and all the fans for their support,” Gyan told his official website.

“I have been happy here since I arrived in 2011 and I hope to help the side to keep winning.”

    Mandzukic: I'm not Diego Costa

    438368_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic says he will bring a different style to the table than the departed Diego Costa.

The Croatia striker, 28, arrived at the Vicente Calderon in a €15 million earlier this month following the departure of Costa, who left for Chelsea for €40m.

Diego Simeone's men enjoyed stunning success in 2013-14, breaking Real madrid and Barcelona's duopoly in La Liga by claiming the title before falling losing to their city rivals in the Champions League final.Costa was a huge part of Atletico's meteoric rise, scoring 36 goals in all competitions last term - including 27 in the league, but Mandzukic was quick to point out he is a very different player to his predecessor.

"Costa is Costa, and I'm Mario Mandzukic," the former Bayern Munich man said.
"Everyone has their own style, and I'm going to follow the instructions of my new boss, El Cholo Simeone."Mandzukic added he was thrilled to be linking up with Simeone, claiming the pair share a likeness.

"I'm really pleased that El Cholo will be my new coach," Mandzukic said."I know his footballing past, he was a great player. He shows the same as a coach, he lives football 100 per cent. We are quite similar."

Mathieu far from finished - Zubizarreta

    438369_heroa.jpg

Andoni Zubizarreta says Barcelona's latest signing Jeremy Mathieu is far from finished after the defender was unveiled on Thursday.

The sporting director sanctioned a €20 million deal for the 30-year-old, who has signed a four-year deal at Camp Nou, with the option of an additional year.

The decision to offer a contract of that length is unusual for a player in his 30s, but Zubizarreta is convinced Barcelona's latest capture has plenty still to give.

"Mathieu is an excellent football player, that's what I think, and he will help us with our operation ahead," he told the media at the Frenchman's official presentation on Thursday.

"I will not get into numbers, for me that isn't important. It is said that when a player is 30-years-old he is finished and then later we see that he is not. He's in excellent physical condition."

The retirement of Carles Puyol and the club's struggles at the back in his absence last season meant defensive reinforcements were at the top of new coach Luis Enrique's wish-list this summer and Zubizarreta is glad to have delivered.

"Last season we made the decision not to sign any defenders from a technical point of view," he added.

"We made that decision together with the management. This year we wanted a player in the centre position who could help us improve. We're delighted to have fulfilled that desire."

The 52-year-old also refused to give guarantees over the futures of Alex Song and Ibrahim Afellay, who both appear surplus to requirements at Camp Nou.

"In the case of Song and Afellay, we are working on it. Alex has trained today, we will see what is going on, not just signings, but outgoings as well."
