Albiol: I was right to leave Real Madrid for Napoli

    391939_heroa.jpg

Raul Albiol believes his decision to leave Real Madrid for Napoli last summer has been fully vindicated by his increased game time.

The Spain international enjoyed a successful first season at the San Paolo, helping the Partenopei claim both a Champions League place and the Coppa Italia.

Consequently, he does not regret his decision to leave the Santiago Bernabeu, explaining that he has been made to feel more wanted by Napoli coach Rafael Benitez than Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti, who took charge in the Spanish capital a month before he left for Italy.

"I took this decision a year ago in order to player more games than I did at Madrid," the defender told Tuttosport.

"And it was the correct choice, given the trust I've had from the coach and my team-mates from the very first day.

"Now, I need only to improve."

Albiol also dismissed the suggestion that he has thrived in Italy because Serie A is of a lower standard that La Liga.

"I have not noticed a great difference between Italian football and Spanish football," he insisted.

For now, the centre-half is solely focused on helping Napoli win the league for the first time since 1990.

"For the moment, we want to win our Champions League qualifier," he mused. "It's a fundamental objective for our season.

"But this year we weant to go for the Scudetto. It will not be easy and nobody can say they're going to win it even before a game is played.

"We will have to work hard and suffer, to correct the errors we made last season, but we are a good team and we must aim high.

"It will be a long season and we must give our all every week in order to always be close to top spot. But all of us at Napoli want to give the fans another Scudetto."

Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Monchengladbach (5-4 pens): Lewandowski & Ribery net before shootout success

    438817_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery scored on his return to action as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Monchengladbach 5-4 on penalties in the Telekom Cup semi-finals.

After two second-half spot-kicks from Max Kruse had seen the game end level at 2-2 in normal time, Gladbach appeared set for victory in the shoot-out when Rafinha's penalty was saved by Janis Blaswich.

However, Bayern goalkeeper Tom Starke then prevented Oscar Wendt from winning it for Lucien Favre's side, before Julian Korb smashed his effort against the crossbar.

That handed Bayern the victory and a place in Sunday's final against Wolfsburg.

Ribery had earlier fired home Bayern's second goal of the game as he made his comeback from a back injury that saw him miss his country's World Cup campaign.

The France winger provided a trademark finish after Robert Lewandowski had opened the scoring in extravagant fashion to put the Bundesliga champions firmly in command.

But the Bavarians' ill-discipline turned the game on its head either side of half-time, with Kruse's composure from 12 yards delaying Bayern's delight.

Gladbach started the 60-minute game at the Imtech Arena brightly, but they were behind in the 29th minute as Lewandowski displayed his considerable quality.

The Poland striker collected the rebound after new signing Sebastian Rode had been denied by Blaswich, jostling for the ball with two defenders before launching an audacious lob from a static position on the edge of the area over the head of the Gladbach goalkeeper.

Bayern looked to have the game wrapped up in the 34th minute when Ribery doubled the advantage in typical fashion, capping a marauding run down the left with an expertly weighted finish over Blaswich.

Yet Gladbach were handed a route back into the contest when they were awarded their first spot-kick eight minutes later, Kruse stepping up to convert after Holger Badstuber was adjudged to have handled in the area.

And further drama arrived in the final minute of normal time, Kruse converting from 12 yards again to force a shoot-out following Javi Martinez's barge on Andre Hahn.

Kruse's efforts proved in vain, however, as Korb failed to show similar composure in the shoot-out, with Gladbach now left to settle for a third-place play-off with hosts Hamburg.

Southampton starlet Chambers agrees to Arsenal move

    438816_heroa.jpg

Arsenal are set to complete the €20 million signing of Calum Chambers after the Southampton right-back agreed personal terms over a move to the Emirates.

The promising 19-year-old is now expected to be announced as a Gunner early next week after completing a medical with the north London club on Friday.

Arsenal had already agreed a fee with Southampton to sign the defender, which will see Arsene Wenger's side pay an initial €12m for the teenager in a deal which will rise to €20m.

    438517.jpg

Liverpool were also interested in signing Chambers, but the promising youngster has followed former Southampton youth products Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in linking up with Arsene Wenger.

Chambers will follow Mauricio Pochettino, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana out of St Mary's this summer, while Dejan Lovren and Morgan Schneiderlin could also be on the way out.

The Gunners have re-emerged as rivals for Tottenham to sign Schneiderlin, while Liverpool are closing in on Lovren.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman had hoped to keep Chambers as competition for Nathaniel Clyne, but the Dutchman reluctantly accepted the transfer would go through.

Arsenal boss Wenger, who has also signed Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United this summer and seen Bacary Sagna move to Manchester City, is now expected to let Carl Jenkinson leave the Gunners in a loan deal.

Sunderland, Swansea, West Ham and Hull have all shown an interest in the 22-year-old, who has failed to establish himself as a first team regular since moving to Arsenal as a teenager in 2011.

Ancelotti: Di Maria still a Real Madrid player

    420330_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has shrugged off speculation linking Angel Di Maria with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, pointing out that the winger is still a Real Madrid player.

Having already signed Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez for a combined €110 million, Los Blancos are willing to offload Di Maria in order to fund a move for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao.

Ancelotti, though, is believed to be keen to keep the Argentina international and has now admitted that the 26-year-old is in his plans for the coming season, revealing that he is more concerned with new arrivals than potential departures.

"Di Maria? He is a Real Madrid player," the Italian coach told Corriere dello Sport.

“The club is doing very well on the transfer market and I think will continue until the last available day.

“The two new arrivals will certainly be of help. I think the current squad is already more competitive than last season.”

Di Maria, who joined Madrid from Benfica in 2010, is being tracked by Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Atletico extend Nike deal until 2026

    438368_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid have extended their deal with Nike until 2026, the American sports brand have confirmed.

Last season Atleti, under the guidance of coach Diego Simeone, won their first La Liga title since 1996 and reached the final of the Champions League.

Their return to the pinnacle of club football has raised the profile of the Madrid outfit considerably and they have now taken another positive step in the right direction off the pitch.

Nike, who first collaborated with Atletico back in 2001, have sealed an agreement that will take their partnership up to the 25-year mark.

Miguel Angel Gil Marin, president of the Spanish club, revealed his delight at the deal: "Having Nike, a selective, demanding, world leader in the sport, working with us is definitely a very important thing for us.

"Continuity of this agreement means that they believe in us and our project."

    Bojan: Stoke style attracted me

    437671_heroa.jpg

Stoke City new-boy Bojan Krkic says that the club's playing style helped to convince him to sign for the Potters.

Under previous manager Tony Pulis, Stoke earned a reputation for particularly direct, physical football but Mark Hughes began a shift in approach last season which attracted the 23-year-old to the Britannia Stadium.

Bojan told the club's official website: "I saw that the idea here is to get the ball down and play good football.

"There are many good players here that want to play with the ball at their feet. I think that will suit the way that I like to play.

"I don't know what I can add to the team but I know what I am capable of on the pitch. I like to get the ball on the ground, make good plays and move the ball around the pitch quickly at a good tempo. I like to build good relationships with other players, too, which is important."

Bojan, who has signed a four-year contract at the Britannia Stadium, has previously been utilised in wide roles but is keen on taking centre stage for Stoke.

"I like to play as a striker or secondary striker," he added.

"In recent seasons I have played out wide but I do feel that my best position is in a more central role."

Cardiff City stand firm over Medel valuation

    433330_heroa.jpg

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman insists that the club will not lower their asking price for Gary Medel.

Inter director Piero Ausilio claimed on Thursday that talks over the Chile international were in an "advanced state".

Reports also suggest that Galatasaray are keen on a move for Medel, who joined Cardiff in an €14 million deal from Sevilla last August.

"We are not going to take a loss on a player who was a World Cup star in Brazil," Dalman told WalesOnline.

"We have made it clear what our price is and that won't change. We will do the right thing for Cardiff City and the player.

"Our position has not changed. There are clubs interested in him but we have not reached agreement with anybody so far."

The 26-year-old still has three years left to run on a four-year deal that expires in June 2017.

Wenger confirms Arsenal are to sign Ospina

    434823_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has confirmed goalkeeper David Ospina is set to join Arsenal but says that Wojciech Szczesny will start the season as first choice.

The Colombia international will officially become a Gunners player after their tour of the United States this summer, with a deal agreed to sign him from Nice.

However, Wenger confirmed Szczesny remains the man in possession of the No.1 position, but fully expects the pair to vie for a starting berth.

"You know at the start Szczesny will be the No.1, then again we'll be down to performances and, if Ospina shows that he is better, he will play," the Frenchman told reporters.

Poland keeper Szczesny started all but one Premier League game last season, though Lukasz Fabianski - who has since left for Swansea City - was preferred in the FA Cup, which Arsenal won.

Ospina made 29 Ligue 1 appearances as Nice finished just two points above the relegation zone last term and impressed in Colombia's run to the quarter-finals at the World Cup in Brazil.

:cool:Reus on track for September return

    384338_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus is upbeat over his progress as he bids to return from a serious ankle injury.

Reus was cruelly ruled out of Germany's successful World Cup campaign after tearing the anterior ligament above his left ankle in a friendly against Armenia in June.

The injury was expected to sideline the 25-year-old until September but Reus is confident he will soon be back in action.

"I can move quite normally and run [in] training," Reus is quoted as saying by Bild.
"It is important for me that I will quickly [be] healthy and can play again soon."Reus, who did not put a specific timescale on his recovery, has scored 30 goals in 62 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach two years ago.

He has been linked with moves to several big European clubs over the summer, including Manchester United and Liverpool, but Dortmund are determined to hold on to their star man, whose contract runs until 2017.

    Allegri: I want another striker

    435824_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed he is looking to sign a striker and a defender before the summer transfer window shuts.

The Italian champions completed a loan move for Udinese winger Roberto Pereyra on Friday just days after the club signed left-back Patrice Evra from Manchester United and striker Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid.

The three high-profile acquisitions followed on from Antonio Conte's shock resignation last week, and his successor Allegri has now revealed his bid to bolster the Juve squad further ahead of the new season.

"If we sign another defender and another striker then we're in good shape,” Allegri told Gazetta dello Sport.“I would prefer a striker first, though. The team's working well – it's not easy to improve an already strong group of players though.”

Juve recruited 18-year-old French midfielder Kingsley Coman from Paris Saint-German in early July, a signing that Allegri admitted he was pleased with.

"Coman must remain and Pereyra is a versatile player that will give us more solutions in both our attack and our midfield," he said. Despite Juve having strengthened the team this summer, the future of Chile star Arturo Vidal remains the subject of much speculation.

Premier League side Manchester United were believed to be lining up a €54 million offer for the 27-year-old after Louis van Gaal approved the move.
However, Allegri confirmed that he has no fears that Vidal will leave Juve this summer.

"I've already talked to Vidal, I am very calm about him staying,” he told Tuttosport.

“He's an important player for the team."
