Real Madrid 2-0 Sevilla: Ronaldo wins Super Cup for European champions

    444353_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid claimed the Uefa Super Cup after two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo sealed a 2-0 win over Sevilla on Tuesday.

Gareth Bale – playing in his hometown of Cardiff – and new signing James Rodriguez had been the poster boys in the build-up to this fixture, but Ronaldo made sure he claimed the headlines in the Welsh capital.

Champions League winners Real were in control throughout against the Europa League victors, but had to wait until the half-hour mark to open the scoring.

Bale found Ronaldo with a wonderful cross from the left, teeing up the Portuguese for a relatively simple sliding finish.

Ronaldo made sure of Real's second Super Cup triumph four minutes after the interval with a powerful left-footed strike.

The match-winner's performance saw him take his tally of goals against Sevilla to 18 since his arrival in Madrid in 2009.

James and fellow new arrival Toni Kroos made their competitive debuts in an attacking Real XI and Sevilla – without Alberto Moreno, as he prepares to seal a move to Liverpool – had to withstand considerable pressure in the opening stages.

Ronaldo saw a free kick deflected onto the roof of the net 13 minutes in, while Real's menacing forward line almost delivered the goods five minutes later.

James whipped the ball into the penalty area after darting down the left wing, but Bale's finish was blocked by Denis Suarez, with replays suggesting the possible use of an arm by the Sevilla man.

Despite playing the role of spectator for 20 minutes, Iker Casillas had to be alert to keep out a Vitolo effort at his near post, before opposite number Beto denied Ronaldo from point-blank range at the other end.

It was Ronaldo who broke the deadlock soon after, however, sliding in to guide home a sensational Bale cross from deep.

Real continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the first half, but failed to carve out clear-cut opportunities to double their advantage.

However, they wasted no time in going two up after the break.

Ronaldo pulled the trigger from just inside the box after receiving possession from Karim Benzema, sending the ball hurtling past Beto and into the back of the net.

James drew a superb one-handed save from Beto in the 70th minute, before Carlo Ancelotti brought the Colombian's debut to an end with the introduction of Isco three minutes later.

Sevilla made a concerted late effort to reduce the deficit - Grzegorz Krychowiak seeing a shot from the edge of the area saved by Casillas before Diogo Figueiras fired just wide.

Yet the result was never in doubt as Real deservedly added the 2014 Uefa Super Cup to their trophy cabinet, and Bale almost provided a fairytale finish when bringing a save from Beto with the last action of the game.

Chelsea 2-0 Real Sociedad: Diego Costa shines again ahead of Premier League kick-off

    444368_heroa.jpg

Diego Costa netted a double on his home debut as Chelsea rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad. The Spain striker - signed from Atletico Madrid last month - gave fans at Stamford Bridge a first-hand glimpse of what they can expect from him in the upcoming season, which Chelsea start at Burnley next Monday.

Having already netted in a friendly at Olimpija, Costa took his pre-season tally to three with a fine brace as he displayed the kind of form that saw him 36 goals for Atleti last season.Costa's goals came inside the opening seven minutes, allowing Jose Mourinho's men to take their foot off the gas and coast to a comfortable victory.

For Sociedad the result represented a second straight defeat on English shores after succumbing 1-0 to Newcastle United last Sunday, and Jagoba Arrasate will hope his side can turn their form around prior to a Europa League play-off clash with Krasnodar a week on Thursday.

Prior to the game Costa had promised to make amends for playing a part in Atleti's Champions League elimination of Chelsea at the semi-final stage last season. And it took just two minutes for the 25-year-old to show the Chelsea fans that he is capable of acting on that promise, netting with a composed finish into the bottom corner from Ramires' clever pass.

Costa doubled his and Chelsea's tally five minutes later when he capitalised on a rebound from Andre Schurrle's curling effort which crashed against Enaut Zubikarai's left-hand post to slot into an unguarded net.Chances dried up following that goal but Eden Hazard did come close to finding a third in the 33rd minute as his low free-kick was well kept out by Zubikarai.

The hosts continued to enjoy almost complete control of the game in the second half, and Costa spurned a glorious chance for his treble after 54 minutes as he fired wide of the near post following superb play down the right from Hazard.A raft of second-half changes slowly disrupted the flow of the game, however, Costa's replacement Fernando Torres came close to making it 3-0, wastefully heading over the crossbar from close range.

But Torres' profligacy mattered little, with Costa's clinical performance giving Mourinho renewed confidence in his foward line despite Dider Drogba's injury and ensuring Chelsea will head to Turf Moor with momentum.

:cool:Ronaldo overtakes Messi on European goals

    444334_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo's double for Real Madrid in their 2-0 win over Sevilla in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday saw the Portuguese reach 70 goals in European competition and overtake Barcelona forward Lionel Messi in the process.

Ronaldo was a full 18 strikes behind Messi in April of 2012, but has closed that gap after netting 12 and then a record 17 in the last two editions of the Champions League - and his two goals on Tuesday mean he is now two ahead of the Argentine in the all-time list of European scorers.

The Portuguese now has 68 Champions League goals and two in the Uefa Super Cup for a total of 70, which leaves him tied second in the list of scorers in continental competitions with former AC Milan and Juventus striker Filippo Inzaghi.

Ronaldo is now only six adrift of former Madrid team-mate Raul, who scored 76 times in Europe for Real and Schalke.

Messi, meanwhile, has scored 68 times in total, with 67 of those converted in the Champions League and one in the Uefa Super Cup.

In total, Ronaldo has now netted 254 goals in 247 games for Real Madrid.

    Martino named Argentina boss

    406039_heroa.jpg

Former Barcelona coach Tata Martino has been officially named the new head coach of Argentina, the treasurer of the Argentine Football Association, Jose Lemme, has confirmed.

Martino has long been expected to take over the national team following the departure of Alejandro Sabella, who opted to step down after losing the World Cup final to Germany.

The 51-year-old is set to be announced as the new Albiceleste boss at an official unveiling on Thursday, with the AFA having delayed the proceedings initially following the death of president Julio Grondona on July 30.

Speaking to TyC Sports, Lemme explained there had been "no problems" over a deal with Martino and that he would be presented to the press this week.

Ronaldo showed what he can do - Bale

    444334_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale believes Cristiano Ronaldo proved his fitness and quality with a virtuoso performance in the Uefa Super Cup win over Sevilla.

The Portugal star went into Tuesday's encounter in Cardiff with concerns over the knee injury which affected the end of his 2013-14 season and his World Cup campaign, as well as severely limiting his pre-season game time this summer.

However, the 29-year-old scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Unai Emery's side to seal the trophy for Carlo Ancelotti's side, and team-mate Bale feels it could be the first of many titles this season.

"Cristiano showed what he can do. The most important thing was we won but to be back in Cardiff is a dream come true, it's fantastic," the Welshman told ITV after the match.

"Everybody comes to Real Madrid to win trophies and play with the best players in the world. We're expected to win trophies. Hopefully we can win every one this season."

James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos made their competitive debuts on Tuesday and Bale is confident the duo will settle quickly into the side.

"The most important thing for us was to get the job done. We played well, obviously it'll take a little time for everyone to settle in but we gelled as a team and we've got plenty of time to improve."

You can't beat the best players in the world, rues Sevilla keeper Beto

    383326_heroa.jpg

Sevilla goalkeeper Beto conceded that Real Madrid were simply too good to beat in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday.

A couple of goals from Cristiano Ronaldo clinched the trophy for Carlo Ancelotti's side in Cardiff as they comfortably saw off the Europa League holders to win the first continental prize of the season.

Beto was proud of his side's efforts on the night but admits that the strength of Madrid's star-studded line-up was simply too much for Unai Emery's charges.

"I'm proud of what the team did tonight," he told reporters after the match.

"It just wasn't possible to beat the team that have the best players in the world.

"We thought we could win, but we leave here with our heads held high."

Defender Federico Fazio added that both the team and the travelling supporters could take great satisfaction from their efforts in Wales.

"We gave everything to win the Super Cup. The fans saw the desire of the team. It's a source of pride to play for this club," he said.

    Fifa investigating concussion in football

    436173_heroa.jpg

Football's governing body Fifa has launched an investigation into concussions in the game after a string of high-profile incidents. The recent World Cup in Brazil was punctuated by a string of concussions, those suffered by Alvaro Pereira, Javier Mascherano and Christoph Kramer - the latter in the tournament's final - the most notable.

With no set guidelines in place, all three played on in their games, although Mascherano was the only one not to subsequently be forced off. That led to criticism of the game's governing body, who have now revealed measures are being taken to boost their understanding of such issues.A statement read: "As well as prevention, determining the most appropriate medical treatment for footballers after head injuries is also crucial.

"With this in mind, researchers from University-Hospital Zurich's Clinic of Neurology and Zurich's Schulthess Clinic have launched a collaborative project with Fifa and have defined the initial factors needed to determine exactly when a player should return to football after suffering a mild injury in the course of play."
Fifa's chief medical officer Jiri Dvorak is supervising the studies, and suggested a period of rest could be enforced for players who are concussed.

"First and foremost, it is crucial that the condition is examined in detail and assessed appropriately within 24 hours of the event," he added."While a head injury initially requires a resting phase, in the event of an inner ear problem we recommend a swift return to training that should include exercises targeted at coordination.
"After a mild head injury it is recommended that players gradually increase their activity levels, ideally making a return to full participation in football six days after sustaining the injury.
"The aim of our project is to get injured players back on the pitch as quickly and as safely as possible."
Last week the Football Association announced measures would be introduced in the English game regarding concussion.

Bale: Super Cup triumph was a perfect evening

    444411_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale described Real Madrid's Super Cup win as a "perfect evening" following their 2-0 success over Sevilla.

The Cardiff showpiece was billed as Bale's triumphant homecoming after his goal helped secure the Champions League against Atletico Madrid in May.

Bale provided an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo's opening goal at the Cardiff City Stadium before the Portuguese star doubled Madrid's lead in the second half and helped Bale clinch his third title as a Real Madrid player.

"For me personally it was a great night," Bale told the press. "To be home in my home town and to win the trophy in Cardiff has made it a perfect evening.

"My family and friends were here so I had a lot of requests for tickets but the most important thing for me, the whole team and Real Madrid was we won the Super Cup trophy."

The Super Cup saw debuts for World Cup winner Toni Kroos and the star of the show in Brazil, James Rodriguez. Competition for places at Santiago Bernabeu is more intense than ever and Bale sees the benefits of having so many renowned stars in the team.

"It's always good to have options," he said. "It makes competition more fierce and obviously performances will go up.

"They've settled in very well. It's great to have them both here. They've done very well tonight and we're looking forward to the season.

In the aftermath of Madrid's win, talk immediately turned to what the side can achieve in the coming season after goals from Bale helped Madrid claim Champions League and Copa del Rey glory last term.

"We know how good we can be and how good we are," Bale said. "We need to keep working hard on the training pitch, keep working hard on the pitch and hopefully we can keep our performances up.

"In sport anything can happen, we're excited and we feel confident, we'll try our hardest to win every trophy and go from there."

Real Madrid take on Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa on Tuesday August 19.

Kroos was perfect against Sevilla - Ancelotti

    436373_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti described Toni Kroos' performance as "perfect" after Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 in the Uefa Super Cup.

The Germany midfielder made his competitive debut in Cardiff along with fellow new arrival James Rodriguez.

And, despite Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the two goals that secured Real's second Super Cup, Ancelotti singled out Kroos for special praise.

"Toni Kroos' performance was perfect," the coach is quoted as saying. "He was quick and clear in everything he did.

"The new players showed their quality. We're more confident than we were this time last year - and that's rubbed off on the team.

"We have many outstanding players now. It will be important to use this squad in its entirety.

"We may be entering a successful cycle. We have a squad of extraordinary quality."

Madrid take on Fiorentina on Saturday before they kick off their Liga campaign at home to Cordoba on August 25.

    Liverpool sign Moreno from Sevilla

    443876_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Sevilla for Spain Under-21 left-back Alberto Moreno.

The Reds have been interested in Moreno throughout the summer, but after initially being frustrated by the Spanish club's demands they have agreed on a fee thought to be in the region of £12 million.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Liverpool can confirm they have reached an agreement with Sevilla for the transfer of Spain international full-back Alberto Moreno.

"The Reds will proceed with the formalities of finalising the deal for the 22-year-old over the coming days and will make no further announcement until it is complete."

As reported by Goal, the Merseysiders went back to the negotiating table at the start of August and were confident that they could finally strike a deal.

Moreno travelled with the Sevilla squad to Cardiff to face Champions League winners Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday but was ommitted from the matchday squad late on after the two clubs reached an agreement.

Sevilla president Jose Castro admitted to continued discussions with Liverpool on Monday, and the 22-year-old will now become Liverpool's eighth summer signing.

Moreno's arrival would push Liverpool's summer spending past the £100m mark following the £70m sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

Southamption trio Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert have all moved to Merseyside, while Emre Can joined from Bayer Leverkusen and Lazar Markovic has been recruited from Benfica.

Brendan Rogders has also signed Divock Origi from Lille, but the Belgium striker will return to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on loan for the 2014-15 campaign, while right-back Javier Manquillo joined on a two-season loan last week.

Van Gaal happy to win 'worst game so far' of Manchester United tenure

    444360_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has described Manchester United's 2-1 win over Valencia as the "worst game" of his short tenure at Old Trafford. The hosts had to rely on a last-minute goal from Maroune Fellaini to overcome their dogged Spanish opponents, with Wayne Rooney missing a first-half penalty.

Darren Fletcher put United ahead soon after the restart, only for Rodrigo Moreno to level matters after capitalising on a poor attempted clearance by Tom Cleverley. And Van Gaal was not impressed by his side's showing ahead of their Premier League kick-off against Swansea City on Saturday.

"The main thing is we won, despite playing our worst game [so far in pre-season]," he told the club's official website. On his first game at Old Trafford, Van Gaal added: "I enjoyed it. Coming onto the pitch, the fans are shouting and screaming your name."

Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia all sat out the game as they continue to struggle for fitness ahead of the new season, and Van Gaal was sceptical when questioned on their respective bids to face Garry Monk's side.
He added: "We have to wait to see if they can play on Saturday."

:cool:Rooney named new Manchester United captain

    i

Wayne Rooney has been named as Manchester United's new captain.

The England international was widely tipped to take over from Nemanja Vidic for the coming season under David Moyes but the Scot's dismissal led to doubts over who would take the armband.

However, the club confirmed following the friendly win over Valencia that Rooney is Louis van Gaal's choice to lead the team in 2014-15, with Darren Fletcher named as vice-captain.

Rooney said: "It is a huge honour for me – and for my family – to be named captain of this great club. It is a role I will perform with great pride. Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me. I look forward to leading the team out on Saturday at our first match of the new season."

Darren Fletcher said: "I am delighted to have been named as vice-captain. It's a very proud moment for me and my family. Wayne and I have always worked well together and we will continue to work closely together in our new roles. I would like to thank the manager for putting his trust in me."

Van Gaal added: "For me it's always very important the choice of captain. Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy. He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role.

"Darren Fletcher will become the vice-captain. Darren is a natural leader and will captain the team when Wayne isn't playing. Darren is a very experienced player and a very popular member of the dressing room, I know he will work well alongside Wayne."
