Arsenal can win the Premier League if they suffer no injuries – Sol Campbell

    439325_heroa.jpg

Sol Campbell believes Arsenal can go all the way in the 2014-15 Premier League title race, providing they suffer no major injuries.

The north Londoners last won the league championship a decade ago, but hopes are high going into the new campaign following the arrival of Chile World Cup star Alexis Sanchez.

"We mainly want to be strong from start to finish this season," Campbell told Goal. "Last year we just faded in the middle when we got a few injuries at the wrong time and things went against us. When we got some players returning at the back-end of the year we produced again.

"Fingers crossed injuries will not hit the strength and depth of our squad too much and then we can make a charge and hopefully win another trophy."If you look at the fact we lost Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain at the wrong point of the season. In the middle of the season we lost four of our dynamic players.

"We need to get those players back fully fit – as we have with some of them and get everyone firing on all cylinders through the whole season and then add new players into the mix, which we are doing."

Arsenal led the Premier League for much of the first half of last season, but fell away in the New Year and had to make do with fourth place and an FA Cup success.

Campbell continued: "If you look at how close we were to the top of the table towards the end of last season when we got the players back fit and if we can get a cohesive and injury free season and add some more then yes, I don’t see why we can’t push for the Premier League title.

"We have got the players, we just need to make sure we are all there because you cannot go a whole season and win the Premier League without that depth, a strong bench and options who can offer something different without the level dropping. That is what we have got to do and it looks like they are doing it now."

Arsenal kick off their new Premier League campaign with a home clash against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

What he said and what he didn't: Diego Lopez's real letter to Madrid

    442231_heroa.jpg

Diego Lopez has written a heartfelt letter to Real Madrid and their fans after making a summer switch to AC Milan this week.

In it, the 32-year-old goalkeeper says that "every minute at Real Madrid was a gift from heaven", adding that the fans will "always be in my heart" and reveals his pride at representing the club he has always supported.

There is no mention, however, of his controversial exit and how politics forced him out of the Spanish side when many believed he was the best goalkeeper at the club.

Below is what he said and what he really wanted to say:

    TO FLORENTINO PEREZ

    295497hp2.jpg

What Diego said: "32 years ago I was born in a small town in the province of Lugo, Paradela (Galicia). I dreamed of being a footballer and I never imagined I would ending up playing for the club in my heart, Real Madrid.

"I will always be eternally grateful and for that I must give thanks to the club and to the president, Florentino Perez, for giving me the opportunity to defend this badge."

What Diego could have said: "32 years ago I was born in a small town in the province of Lugo, Paradela (Galicia). I dreamed of being a footballer and I never imagined I would end up being discarded for political reasons by the club in my heart, Real Madrid.

"I suppose I had better give thanks to Florentino Perez for giving me the opportunity to defend this badge, even though it was Jose Mourinho who wanted me and I always knew they would force me out after he left."

TO JOSE MOURINHO & CARLO ANCELOTTI

    388896hp2.jpg

What Diego said: "Thanks to two great coaches (Mourinho and Ancelotti) and their respective staff for their confidence, everything I have learned from them and for giving me the opportunity to compete, which is the essence of sport."

What Diego could have said: "Thanks to these two great coaches, especially the first one who believed in me and went against the press and many of the fans to support me. Thanks to the latter for playing me in La Liga, but you should have started me in the other competitions as well. And you should have put your foot down when the club didn't give me the opportunity to compete, which is the essence of sport."

    TO THE MADRID FANS

    410588hp2.jpg

What Diego said: "All of my gratitude to the madridistas, that great family spread all over the world. Thanks for making me feel welcome and for all your strength through this time. You will always be in my heart."

What Diego could have said: "All of my gratitude to the madridistas (the ones who supported me; not the ones who booed and jeered me). Thanks to the ones who made me feel welcome and gave me all your strength. You will always be in my heart. I won't miss the rest of you."

    TO THE CLUB

    379773hp2.jpg

What Diego said: "I leave happy because I gave everything I had.

"My only objective was to work day to day with respect, dedication and defend with passion the values of the best club in the world."

What Diego could have said: "I leave with sadness because I gave everything I had and was still forced out, even though the goalkeeping coach Villiam Vecchi said I was one of the best he has ever worked with.

"My only objective was to work day to day with respect, dedication and defend with passion the values of what I thought was the best club in the world.

"But what happened to those values? Instead of being given a fair shot when I deserved it, I had to sit on the bench to keep Casillas happy and then I had to leave to stop him sulking and because they want nothing to do with Mourinho, all so that they could bring in a new toy who thinks he can become first choice ahead of 'San Iker'.

    "Good luck with that, Keylor!"

Arsenal ready to cash in on Podolski

    393354_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger is ready to sanction the sale of Lukas Podolski amid interest from German and Turkish clubs.

Wenger will let the German World Cup winner leave if the Gunners can recoup the majority of the €13.7 million that they paid for him in 2012.

Podolski was a marginalised figure at Emirates Stadium last season and, with growing competition for the attacking roles, may be willing to push for a move in search of regular football.

The former Koln skipper, who Goal understands is the only senior player who could be allowed to leave in the final weeks of the transfer window, is attracting interest from Galatasaray, Besiktas and several Bundesliga clubs.

The forward, who turned 29 in June, has two years remaining on his contract and was ignored in the flurry of extended deals handed to senior players at the end of last season.

    445197_heroa.jpg

Despite Arsenal being decimated by the lengthy absences of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott at the end of last season, Podolski only featured regularly in the final weeks of the campaign.

Wenger does not believe that the Germany international has the physical power and technical ability to spearhead the attack and he is behind the likes of new signing Alexis Sanchez, Walcott, Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky in the battle for the flank roles.

There was strong interest from Schalke in Podolski last summer and a return to the Bundesliga is a possibility.

Meanwhile, Joel Campbell has also been attracting interest but Wenger is reluctant to allow him to go out on loan again following successful spells at Real Betis and Olympiakos.

Ahead of Saturday's season opener against Crystal Palace, Wenger said: "I would like to keep him here, he has trained very well and matured a lot."

Martinez denies agreement with Chelsea over Barkley

    445193_heroa.jpg

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has denied speculation the club have given Chelsea first refusal on Ross Barkley and John Stones.

The Goodison Park outfit have struck up a productive relationship with Chelsea in the last couple of seasons, completing the permanent transfer of Romelu Lukaku last month following a successful year on loan in 2013-14.

And there was another arrival from Stamford Bridge on Wednesday as Christian Atsu joined on loan but Martinez was quick to rubbish rumours that a transfer partnership is in place and that Barkley and Stones could make the switch to the London club.

"We have a good relationship and a professional relationship and I want to believe that they feel that they can trust us in sending players out on loan," the Toffees boss said.

"I don't think that relationship goes any further.

"The chairman [Bill Kenwright] has been instrumental on forging that relationship more than anyone.

"He has developed that bridge between the two clubs and there is a possibility for both to use it in a good way, but there is no commitment in any sort of future deals."

Mourinho refuses to rule out more Chelsea arrivals

    439045_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has refused to rule out further arrivals at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have signed Filipe Luis, Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Didier Drogba for a combined €93.5 million, and Thibaut Courtois has returned from a three-year loan spell at Atletico Madrid.

Yet despite claiming he is happy with the squad at his disposal, Petr Cech has been told he is free to leave, whilst Mourinho says the there could still be more movement this transfer window.

He told reporters: "The market is open and experience tells us all that when the market is open and you can never say what is going to happen. You know if a player has a different reaction in this last part of the month, we never know if any club tries to do something with your players.

"But the reality is that I'm very happy with my squad. I'm very happy with my club and the structure that supports me."

Goal understands the Blues have made an enquiry as to the avilability of QPR forward Loic Remy in the wake of an ankle injury picked up by Didier Drogba while a move for teenage goalkeeper Ivan Brkic is also close to completion.

But Mourinho explained that he is very pleased with the players he has already brought to the club in the off-season while also admitting that his side will be in the running for the Premier League title in 2014-15.

"We have bought some key players having analysed our squad and we believe. These new players bring us to another dimension.

"Yes we are a title contender. If you want me to say we will win the league I can't, because I respect this competition."

Chelsea begin their pursuit of the title against Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday.

Man United won't win the Premier League - Scholes

    444373_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has brought "fear" back into the Manchester United players but will not win the Premier League this season, according to Paul Scholes.

Van Gaal was named manager of United at the of the end 2013-14 campaign after David Moyes oversaw the club's seventh place finish in his debut season at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman only arrived in Manchester following the Netherlands' World Cup commitments in July but the 62-year-old has already gained admirers for his bold tactics.

Van Gaal has switched to a 3-5-2 formation, which resulted in an undefeated pre-season, including wins over the Los Angeles Galaxy, Roma, Inter, Real Madrid and Liverpool on the club's tour of the United States.

And former United midfielder Scholes believes the Dutchman is a "bit mad", though he does not believe his hands-on approach will see United win the league in 2014-15.

"He's a bit like a mad genius, he looks a bit crazy," Scholes wrote in The Independent.

"He's brought a bit of fear into the players which is no bad thing. I played for 20 years for Sir Alex Ferguson and he could be a scary man. Sometimes fear can bring performances out from you.

"But I have seen clips on the telly and one moment he's hugging someone for doing a great pass and the next he's going off his head.

"You knew where you stood with Sir Alex Ferguson straight from what you'd done on the Saturday. If you'd done well he'd pat you on the back and if you hadn't you probably wouldn't be playing the next week.

"This manager has great experience with proper clubs and been successful. Hopefully he can bring a bit of that to us."

Nevertheless, Scholes has tipped Chelsea and Manchester City to battle it out for first place, claiming that United need to make at least two midfield signings if they are to be considered as serious title challengers.

"I think the title is between City and Chelsea, they've both made decent signings. The next two places are between United, Liverpool and Arsenal," he added.

"United will be looking for a better season than last season, and that shouldn't be too difficult. It was a big blip last year. Disappointing.

"I'm sure he [Van Gaal] would have liked to have signed more players. He's not managed to do that yet. Are the players out there available? The areas they need, in midfield, is an area where I thought they might have bought a couple of players.

"It's not because they're not in the Champions League [that players aren't joining United]. Maybe if they were out of it for three or four years, but United is such a massive club. Being out of the Champions League will hopefully only be for one year.

"The chance to win the Premier League... possibly not this year if they don't make any more signings, but they'll definitely have a better year than last year. Confidence was low at the start of this season and I think this manager has brought that back."

Mourinho: No possibility of Cech leaving Chelsea

    443110_heroa.jpg

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has rubbished suggestions Petr Cech could leave the club this summer, even though he has yet to reveal who his No.1 goalkeeper will be for the upcoming season.

Cech, who has been the Blues' first-choice shot-stopper for a decade, faces fresh competition for a starting berth from Thibaut Courtois, who has at last returned from his three season-long loan spell at Atletico Madrid.

The Belgian's presence has thrown Cech's future into doubt, but Mourinho insists there have been no offers for Czech international and he is delighted to have such a "great problem" in choosing between two world-class goalkeepers.

"In this moment I don't want to think about it because there is no offer, there is no possibility," said the Chelsea boss when asked if Cech's time at Stamford Bridge could be over.

"I'm working with them and I told them as a group today that every one of my players in the squad I'm happy to have. I'm not waiting for anything. It's not good to analyse something that is not on the table."

On the subject of who his No.1 will be against Burnley, he added: "I don't tell you because they don't know. The keepers don't know and the team doesn't know and they will know at the same time, all of them.

"In my opinion Chelsea has two of the three best goalkeepers in the world. This is unique. Is this [choosing between them] a problem for me? A great problem.

"They are both fantastic goalkeepers, even [Mark] Schwarzer, obviously in a different age and a different level at this moment. To have Cech and Courtois is a good problem."

    :cool:Suarez begins training with Barca

    445168_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez has trained with his new Barcelona team-mates for the first time after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) gave him the green light on Thursday.

The Uruguyan is currently serving a four-month suspension from football for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during the two sides' World Cup clash.

Fifa had initially ruled that he would be banned from all footballing activities, including training, but upon appeal, the CAS ruled that he could participate in friendlies and train normally.

Barelona announced soon after that the former Liverpool man, who completed his move to Camp Nou after the tournament's conclusion, would start training on Friday with a view to making his first appearance in the Gamper Trophy game against Leon on Monday.

Barca had been hopeful that the CAS would reduce his ban from playing all together, however it ruled that the length of his suspension was appropriate.

Suarez could make his competitive debut against Real Madrid in the season's first Clasico, which is due to take place on either October 25 or October 26.

I dreamed of spending my life at Real Madrid, says Valero

    346493_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina star Borja Valero has admitted it will be a special occasion when he faces former club Real Madrid in Saturday's friendly.

The midfielder came through the youth system at Santiago Bernabeu but only made two apperances for their senior side before signing a contract with Real Mallorca in 2007.

The 29-year-old went on to enjoy impressive spells with both the Palma-based outfit and Villarreal before joining Fiorentina in 2012, where he has become an integral part of Vincenzo Montella's side.

La Viola are preparing to meet Madrid in a friendly in Warsaw on Saturday and Valero has acknowledged that he once dreamed he would stay at his boyhood club forever.

"For me it's a special game because I grew up there, they taught me everything I know," he told Sky Sports.

"It will be a great feeling. My dream was to play in that shirt my whole life - ultimately that has not been possible but I'm happy with what I've done in football. For now, I'm satisfied."

The midfielder, who has one cap for Spain, also says his side are determined to return to the Champions League - but accepts it could be tough this season.

"We've tried for three years. It's more difficult in Italy because there are only three places. All teams are improving. We'll try, but it's very difficult."
