:)Casillas has always been world class - Ronaldo

    280398_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed suggestions Real Madrid team-mate Iker Casillas is past his best, insisting the Spain captain is still "world class".

The goalkeeper has endured a difficult couple of seasons after losing out to Diego Lopez as the club's first-choice goalkeeper and a poor World Cup showing that saw Spain eliminated at the group stage.

But despite his recent form, the sale of Lopez to AC Milan means Casillas is likely to be reinstated as the main goalkeeper ahead of new signing Keylor Navas and Ronaldo says the team will be in safe hands with the 33-year-old, who has three Champions League titles, two European Championships and a World Cup to his name.

"Iker has never stopped being one of the best keepers in the world," Ronaldo told reporters. "He has always been world-class."

Madrid kicked off their season with a Uefa Super Cup win over Sevilla on Tuesday, with Ronaldo scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory, and the Portuguese forward insists the trophy is just the beginning for reigning the European champions.

"We have to think about the now, not the future," he added.

"First one objective and then another. We've won the European Super Cup and that's great, but we have to keep on working. We've started the season off on the right foot and we're pleased with that."

Carlo Ancelotti's men continue their pre-season on Saturday with a friendly clash against Fiorentina before opening the new Liga campaign against city rivals Atletico on Tuesday.

Bojan needs time to shine for Stoke - Hughes

    442366_heroa.jpg

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has urged the club's fans to be patient as Bojan Krkic settles into life in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old forward, who joined Stoke from Spanish giants Barcelona last month, has captured the imagination of the Britannia Stadium faithful with his promising pre-season form.

Bojan scored three goals during Stoke's preparations for the new campaign, and Hughes believes he could have a special player on his hands.

"He has done very well in pre-season," he said. "He is a talented boy and everyone can see the threat he carries.

"We will have to be patient though because he is coming into a new league - one of which he hasn't been exposed to before.

"We had a similar situation with Marko Arnautovic last season, who needed a few months to excel.

"He will be a real impact player for us though. He is used to winning games, and he is a big-game player in many regards.

"I have seen enough already to know that we have an exceptionally talented young player.

"Getting him here is a real coup for us, there is no doubt about that."

In addition to Bojan, Phil Bardsley, Steve Sidwell, Mame Biram Diouf and Dionatan Teixeira have all arrived at Stoke, but Hughes insists there is more business to be done before the transfer window closes.

"We are still hopeful on a number of fronts," the Welshman added. "We just have to bide our time.

"A lot of these things are dictated by people other than ourselves.

"We have options out there. We do have a budget and an amount of money that we are willing to spend."

Stoke begin their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Porto 2-0 Maritimo: Teenager Neves enjoys dream debut

    445305_heroa.jpg

Teenager Ruben Neves made an immediate impression in his debut as Porto kicked off the Primeira Liga season with a 2-0 home win over Maritimo.

Neves, the youngest player to start a league match for Porto at the age of 17 years, five months and two days, opened the scoring after just 12 minutes at Estadio do Dragao on Friday.

His strike looked set to be the only goal of the game, but Jackson Martinez added a second for the 27-time Portuguese champions in the fourth minute of injury time, rounding off an encouraging first competitive game for new coach Julen Lopetegui.Spaniard Lopetegui is tasked with reviving Porto after the club finished 13 points behind champions Benfica last term.

And the 47-year-old could hardly have wished for a better start, with Neves keeping his cool to drill home a first-time shot after an early corner had only been half-cleared by the Maritimo defence.

Fellow Porto debutants Bruno Martins Indi and Yacine Brahimi had opportunities to extend Porto's lead prior to the interval, while Maritimo - sixth in the Primeira Liga last term - saw chances of their own go begging.

The second half brought less goalmouth action, but the hosts did eventually double their lead.Cristian Tello, another new face at Porto following his loan move from Barcelona, was the creator, jinking in from the right before playing a delicate reverse pass into the path of Martinez, who converted at the second attempt after his initial strike was saved by Romain Salin.

Victory ensures Porto will head into the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie against Lille, which takes place at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday, in good spirits.

Feyenoord 1-1 Heerenveen: Te Vrede spares hosts' blushes

    445291_heroa.jpg

A Mitchell te Vrede equaliser salvaged Feyenoord a point at home as they drew 1-1 with 10-man Heerenveen on Friday.

Fred Rutten's team dominated the vast majority of the fixture at De Kuip - even before the visitors had Joey van den Berg sent off on the hour mark.

Yet a frustrated Feyenoord required a 70th-minute leveller from Te Vrede who saw a header from captain Immers bounce off of him and into the net to earn a draw after Hakim Ziyech put visitors ahead with a wonderful free-kick shortly after Van den Berg's dismissal.

Heerenveen started brightly and had the first attempt on goal when Luciano Slagveer burst past two Feyenoord defenders and shot just wide after three minutes. That jolted the hosts into life, though, and Rutten's side soon began to control proceedings.

Te Vrede had Feyenoord's best chance of the first half when his header was well saved by Heerenveen keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt shortly before the interval.
The second period followed much the same pattern - Feyenoord probing while Heerenveen resisted - and the home team seemed to be given a huge helping hand when Van den Berg was given his marching orders.Despite that setback, Heerenveen went ahead soon after courtesy of Ziyech's 25-yard set-piece.

However, their lead lasted just three minutes, as Immers climbed highest to direct substitute Ruben Schaken's neat cross towards goal and it bounced past Nordfeldt via Te Vrede, with the goal being awarded to the striker as opposed to Immers.
Feyenoord, who announced the loan signing of Bursaspor's Colin Kazim-Richards earlier on Friday, pressed for a winner with Elvis Manu and Tonny Vilhena going closest. But they could not find a way past an inspired Nordfeldt and had to settle for a point.

Aguero: United are our biggest threat

    434192_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero believes Manchester United will re-emerge as genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season under new boss Louis van Gaal.

United endured their worst ever Premier League campaign under David Moyes last term while bitter rivals Manchester City held off Liverpool and Chelsea to claim their second triumph in the last three seasons.

But Aguero has warned his team-mates that, with Van Gaal now at the helm and no European football to distract them, United will carry a serious threat once again.

"This year I think Manchester United will be up there challenging us," he insisted at the club's CityLive event on Thursday.

"Then you have teams like Chelsea and Arsenal who, as always, will be there or thereabouts battling with us for the league.

"But the team I think who is most worthy of having the best chance to threaten is United, because they are not involved in any other competitions other than the English knock-out cups and the league.

"That means they'll get more rest between games than ourselves and some of the other teams and that will work in their favour, like it did last season with Liverpool."

Aguero also revealed he is still several weeks away from making his City return after an extended World Cup campaign with Argentina that was hampered by injury problems.

"I got back here last week and the aim to begin with is two weeks of just hard work to strengthen the legs and to get my fitness right," he added.

"Right now I need that because it's been a good while since I did even a mini pre-season of at least a fortnight.

"By the third week I'll be fully 100 per cent and ready to go.

"I have to get in an hour and a half early and start off with strength exercises and then I work on stability in my hips and sides and then the rest is more straightforward, just to strengthen the pelvic area in order to prevent any further injuries by the groin area of the sort that I'd been having."

Official: Aston Villa sign Carlos Sanchez

    379035_heroa.jpg

Aston Villa have completed the signing of midfielder Carlos Sanchez from Elche on a four-year deal.

The Colombia international joins Paul Lambert's side on the eve of their opening game of the Premier League season at Stoke City as they look to improve on a 15th-placed finish in 2013-14.

And the 28-year-old admitted he is looking forward to plying his trade in England after seeing compatriot and former Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel succeed on his arrival in the Midlands.

"I'm delighted to be here, it's something I have always dreamed of and it is very important for me to be here at Aston Villa, not only for me but for my family as well," he told the club's official website.

"It was always my aim to play in this country and in this league and I know Villa well as Juan Pablo also played here. I began to watch Villa games when he came in 2001. He was a goalscorer who was very important to this club and I followed his time here because he was always scoring goals."

Lambert has praised the midifielder's eye for a tackle as he looks to add some steel to his side ahead of the new season.

"He does the simple things really well and he's excellent at spotting the danger, dealing with it and keeping it simple. His physical strength, too, is something we will benefit from in the middle of the pitch and his role will be a really important one for the team," he said.

"We've beaten other teams to bring him here to Villa and I'm delighted as we needed someone of his ilk to come in. He'll be an excellent player for the club."

Sanchez started four out of five games for his country in the World Cup in Brazil and moves to Villa Park after just one season in La Liga with Elche.

Van Gaal: Ferguson and I haven't spoken

    444360_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he is yet to meet with Sir Alex Ferguson since arriving at the club, with their first planned get together cancelled by the Scot.

Ferguson spent a trophy-laden 27 years in charge at Old Trafford and ended his coaching career to become a director and club ambassador at the club. His successor, David Moyes, lasted just 10 months in the job as United finished seventh in the Premier League last term - their lowest in the competition's history.

Van Gaal says he was scheduled to meet the 72-year-old during their pre-season tour in the United States but has yet to speak to him since the meeting was cancelled.

"No, until this moment I have not found the time to [meet with Ferguson], but I do not know if he is at home," Van Gaal told reporters.

"It was in the planning that I would see him in the US [during pre-season tour] but he called off and I have also been very busy with a lot of things."

Manchester United begin the new season with a home fixture against Swansea City on Saturday.

:(Manchester United 1-2 Swansea City: Sigurdsson condemns Van Gaal to opening day defeat

    445418_heroa.jpg

Gylfi Sigurdsson's smart finish saw Swansea City claim a surprise 2-1 win at Manchester United as the Louis van Gaal era started in defeat.

Sigurdsson bagged the winner 18 minutes from time on Saturday as Van Gaal - tasked with improving the fortunes at Old Trafford after David Moyes' disastrous spell in charge last term - endured a day he will want to forget in his opening Premier League fixture.

The Dutchman's 3-4-1-2 system did not appear to suit United despite being used in pre-season and they found themselves behind when Ki Sung-Yueng scored from 20 yards just before the half-hour mark.

Van Gaal, known for his tinkering, swapped to 4-4-1-1 in the second half and it appeared to be the tonic for United's response, led by new captain Wayne Rooney, who levelled with a clever overhead kick eight minutes after the break.

Rooney saw an outstanding free-kick crash against the post with 24 minutes left and Old Trafford was then stunned when Sigurdsson - Swansea's main signing of the close-season - finished well after Wayne Routledge's cut-back.

The result is sure to put early pressure on Van Gaal and is likely to see further spending from United in the transfer window, as they look to recover from last term's seventh-place finish.

The victory was Swansea's second at Old Trafford in 2014 - and second ever - as the Welsh club also won a third-round FA Cup tie by the same scoreline in January.

Van Gaal gave 20-year-old defender Tyler Blackett a Premier League debut, while Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard also made their top-flight bows.

Lingard started in the unfamiliar position of right wing-back and was nearly caught out just six minutes in, when Routledge drifted across him untracked, but the Swansea man's first touch meant that Jonjo Shelvey's ball in behind was squandered.

Sigurdsson - back at Swansea for a second spell, this time permanently, after signing from Tottenham - saw his 25-yard shot in the 12th minute fall awkwardly for United goalkeeper David de Gea, but the Spaniard did well to smother it.

Lingard was then injured in a challenge with Ashley Williams, and replaced by Adnan Januzaj, before the hosts eventually got going, with Lukasz Fabianski - the only debutant for the visitors from the start - needing to be alert to keep out Phil Jones' deflected cross and Juan Mata's inswinging effort.

Swansea were able to convert one of their chances, though, as Ki delighted the travelling fans in the 28th minute.

The South Korea international was played in by Sigurdsson, who initially linked with Nathan Dyer, and he hit a sweet left-footed effort that curled into the right corner from 20 yards.

Van Gaal's men failed to mount a significant response before the break and as a result, he replaced the ineffective Javier Hernandez with Nani and changed systems.

Rooney then produced the equaliser eight minutes into the second half, showing great anticipation to thrash Jones' near-post flick-on home from four yards in sensational style.

The England star continued to threaten, with Williams required to deny him with a last-gasp tackle, before he was then thwarted by the woodwork as his wicked 25-yard set-piece left Fabianski rooted to the spot, but crashed back off the post.

And Swansea made the hosts pay for their profligacy as a quick free-kick, taken by Wilfried Bony, set them free.

A cross from substitute Jefferson Montero made its way through to Routledge at the far post, and although he slipped, his ball fortunately fell for Sigurdsson, who hammered an effort through a sea of bodies that was too hot to handle for De Gea.

United, so often saved by late goals, rarely looked like levelling, but were denied a penalty despite Januzaj's cross striking the arm of Angel Rangel in injury time, as Swansea claimed an excellent win against the odds.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Bastia: Ibrahimovic injured but Cavani clinches victory

    445501_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain picked up their first three-point haul of the new Ligue 1 season courtesy of a 2-0 win over Bastia.

The champions were held to a 2-2 draw at Reims in their first game of the new league campaign, but proved to be too strong for Bastia as goals from Lucas Moura and Edinson Cavani secured all three points in Paris.

PSG's victory came at a cost, though, as talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was substituted only 15 minutes in after taking a knock to either his back or side and coach Laurent Blanc will be hoping the injury is not serious, having already lost defender Thiago Silva to a hamstring problem this week.

It was a comfortable victory for the Parisian giants, who were rewarded for a dominant display with a goal in each half from Lucas and Cavani, as former PSG assistant coach Claude Makelele suffered his first Ligue 1 defeat since taking over at Bastia.

Big-money signing David Luiz made his Ligue 1 debut alongside Marquinhos at the heart of the PSG defence in the absence of Silva.

El-Hadji Ba was handed his league debut for Bastia, who played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Marseille in their first league game of the season, following his move on a season-long loan from Sunderland.

PSG made a bright start and Cavani, who has been linked with Liverpool, had a chance to open the scoring just three minutes in, only to see his shot deflected over the crossbar.

There was concern for PSG when Ibrahimovic required treatment after seemingly taking a knock to his side after only six minutes and the prolific striker was eventually replaced by Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Brandao spurned a chance to give Bastia a shock lead when he rose to head wide of the far post and he was made to pay when Lucas put PSG in front in the 26th minute.

Gregory van der Wiel was the architect, swinging over an inviting cross from the right and an unmarked Lucas clinically volleyed home from six yards out.

Lavezzi then fired wildly over the bar seven minutes before the break as PSG pushed for a second goal.

New signing Serge Aurier replaced Van der Wiel at the break and the home side picked up where they left off when Bastia were almost caught out by a quick-free kick, which allowed Lucas to race clear but fail to apply the finish as he fired wide of the near post.

Makelele's side failed to heed the warning, though, as they were again caught cold when Marco Verratti superbly picked out Cavani with a quick free-kick.

Cavani still had plenty to do as he took an excellent touch to control the ball, but he rifled home with his right foot as he was falling to the turf to seal PSG's win just before the hour mark.

The Uruguay forward looked like he had a point to prove as he tried his luck with a 25-yard free-kick, but two goals were more than enough for PSG.

QPR 0-1 Hull City: Chester gets Tigers off to a winning start

    445462_heroa.jpg

James Chester's goal and a late Allan McGregor penalty save earned Hull City a 1-0 win and spoiled QPR's Premier League return on Saturday.

Having dropped out of the top flight in 2012-13, Harry Redknapp's men bounced back at the first attempt last season courtesy of a 1-0 win in the Championship play-off final against Derby County.

The hosts were the better team in the first half at Loftus Road, but they failed to build on their good start as Steve Bruce's side clinched a narrow victory,McGregor denying Charlie Austin from the spot with five minutes to play.

Chester's goal arrived shortly after the interval, the centre-half proving too strong for QPR debutant Rio Ferdinand and glancing in Stephen Quinn's right-wing corner.

After their run to the FA Cup final last season, Hull also have Europe to contend with, and came into the game with competitive action already under their belts this term, but Bruce's priority will remain the Premier League.

With that in mind, the former Sunderland boss will have been enthused by his side's ability to seal all three points after struggling to cause QPR many problems in the first period. Both sides started with three new faces as Ferdinand, Steven Caulker and Jordon Mutch all made their competitive bows for QPR, while Robert Snodgrass, Tom Ince and Andrew Robertson were Hull's Premier League debutants.

After an assured start from the visitors, QPR grew into the game and had the first effort of note in the 17th minute when Alejandro Faurlin dragged a shot narrowly wide following a scramble inside the Hull penalty area.Joey Barton and Mutch both went close as QPR continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock.

The visitors felt they should have had a penalty in the 32nd minute, though, as Armand Traore tangled with Nikica Jelavic, but referee Craig Pawson awarded a corner only.Hull's struggles to create chances were dealt a further blow as Snodgrass was forced off with a knee injury five minutes before the break and replaced by Quinn.

And they had Robertson to thank for heading in at the break level after the Scotland international scrambled Caulker's header off the line, with McGregor pawing the rebound away.Seven minutes after the break Chester put Hull in front, getting the better of Ferdinand and heading Quinn's corner into the bottom left-hand corner from eight yards.

Quinn was influential again 10 minutes later as he led a breakaway and played in Ince, but the England Under-21 international was denied by the legs of Rob Green one-on-one.Hull survived two late scares in the final 10 minutes as QPR searched desperately for an equaliser.First, Tom Huddlestone hacked the ball off the line after it had bounced goalwards off the knee of Ferdinand.

And after Pawson harshly adjudged Chester to have handled in the area, McGregor stooped to his right to save Austin's weak effort as Hull shrugged off last season's struggles on the road to begin their campaign in fine fashion.
