Woodward is lucky that Van Gaal, for all his firebrand reputation and inability to sugarcoat matters, has far stopped short of laying blame at his paymasters' inability to recruit footballers to make his team work better. On this bleak evidence, he requires at least two more defenders, a player of pace who can add electricity to a team that badly lacks zip, and a midfielder who can add far more energy than Darren Fletcher was able to inject. The names of such players are well known to United fans. Now Woodward must get the deals done.

Newcastle 0-2 Manchester City: Silva & Aguero get champions off to winning start

    445798_heroa.jpg

David Silva and Sergio Aguero provided the inspiration as Manchester City got their Premier League title defence off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle at St James' Park.

Silva raced onto Edin Dzeko's brilliant backheel pass to fire clinically beyond Tim Krul on 38 minutes to give Manuel Pellegrini's men a narrow lead they never relinquished.

Inspired by marquee summer signing Remy Cabella, Newcastle threatened an equaliser on several occasions during a tense second half, with substitute Ayoze Perez almost scoring within seconds of his arrival and Moussa Sissoko firing over late on.

However, Sergio Aguero made the points safe in stoppage time, the substitute sweeping home from close range after Krul had saved his initial shot.

The champions began impressively, some crisp passing ending with Dzeko's poked volley being kept out by goalkeeper Tim Krul following a lovely chipped Stevan Jovetic pass.

That set the tone for a dominant start, Samir Nasri stinging the hands of Krul with a half-volley from range.

Yet Newcastle gradually began to find their rhythm amid an emotional atmosphere that saw tributes both before and during the first half to remember supporters Liam Sweeney and John Alder, who lost their lives in the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash.

New signing Cabella was bright for the home side, chipping just over the crossbar. However, he and his team-mates could do little as City took the lead with a stunning goal in the 38th minute.

A searching ball forward found Dzeko, whose superb back-heel left Silva with the simplest of finishes.

Newcastle responded well after half-time, a deep corner finding Gouffran - whose effort drew a smart save from Joe Hart in the Manchester City goal.

The hosts' industry continued, too, with Paul Dummett heading just over in between three Jovetic half-chances.

The best of those came when the forward was denied by a superb Fabricio Coloccini block as City threatened a second goal.

Jovetic was also instrumental in City's next opening, sending over a clever pass that Dzeko headed narrowly over with 27 minutes left.

Suddenly back on top, the visitors continued to press forward, with Yaya Toure's free-kick narrowly missing the target late on.

That effort preceded a spell of home pressure as Alan Pardew's side did everything in their power to get back into the game, substitute Perez seeing an effort deflect agonisingly wide.

Newcastle then spurned an even better chance, as Sissoko blazed over from just outside the area.

And City made them pay, Aguero - on as an 83rd-minute replacement for Dzeko, much to the delight of the City fans - curling home after his initial effort was saved by Krul.

Preussen Munster 1-4 Bayern Munich: Bavarians breeze into second round

    445787_heroa.jpg

Reigning champions Bayern Munich cruised into the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a 4-1 win at Preussen Munster.

Mario Gotze etched his name into German footballing folklore by netting in extra-time against Argentina at the Maracana a little over a month ago, and was on hand to get Bayern's defence of their DFB-Pokal crown off to a comfortable start when he opened the scoring on Sunday.

Bundesliga champions Bayern were tested early by a Preussen outfit who sit 12th in Germany's third tier, but normal service was resumed after Gotze's 19th-minute header.

Manuel Neuer was required to produce two good stops prior to the goal, but Bayern pressed on after going ahead and added a second courtesy of a cool finish from another of Germany's World Cup heroes - Thomas Muller - 10 minutes later.

David Alaba got on the scoresheet early in the second half with a well-struck effort from outside the area before Claudio Pizarro scored with a delightful chip.

Rogier Krohne got a late consolation from the penalty spot for Preussen, who then had Marc Heitmeier sent off for bringing down Robert Lewandowski in the area - only for the Pole to spurn the chance to score his first competitive goal for Bayern from 12 yards.

The result helps erase some of the disappointment from Pep Guardiola's side's DFL Supercup defeat to Borussia Dortmund - and gets their hunt for a third consecutive Pokal success under way.

Preussen did not appear overawed early on in the first-round tie, retaining possession well against a Bayern team that included five of Germany's World Cup winners.

Krohne had Preussen's first effort on goal with a powerful drive that was kept out well by Neuer before Gotze was denied twice in quick succession, first by goalkeeper Daniel Masuch and then Dominik Schmidt.

Guardiola was visibly exasperated as Preussen were again allowed an effort on goal soon after - Marcel Reichwein's drive tipped round the post by Neuer having cut in from the left.

However, the Bayern coach saw his side move ahead when Gotze ghosted into the area unmarked to head home Lewandowski's cross from the right.

Muller doubled the German champions' advantage shortly before the half-hour mark - steering home his 100th Bayern goal after Jens Truckenbrod's tackle fortuitously diverted the ball to him inside the area.

Bayern failed to extend their lead before the break but needed just six second-half minutes before Alaba's impressive long-range strike left Masuch helpless.

Pizarro then added a fourth with an expert chip 17 minutes from time, and Guardiola brought captain Philipp Lahm, Xherdan Shaqiri and Holger Badstuber - making his first start since December 2012 - off before Boateng gave away a late penalty that was converted by Krohne.

Marc Heitmeier felled Lewandowski when through on goal and was subsequently dismissed before the former Dortmund man's tame effort from the spot was kept out by Masuch.

Liverpool 2-1 Southampton: Late Sturridge strike saves Reds

    445762_heroa.jpg

Daniel Sturridge was the hero as Liverpool overcame a spirited Southampton to begin their Premier League campaign with a hard-earned three points at Anfield.

Liverpool, playing their first Premier League match since Luis Suarez's summer move to Barcelona, were far from their flowing best and laboured going forward without the Uruguay frontman. But Sturridge – now Liverpool's main man in attack – saved the day with a predatory finish from four yards with just 11 minutes to play.

The hosts controlled the first half, but chances were few and far between against a Southampton outfit playing a league match under manager Ronald Koeman for the first time. One of those opportunities did lead to the opener, though, as an exquisite Jordan Henderson through ball set up Raheem Sterling, who produced a cool finish midway through the first half.

Nathaniel Clyne's powerful effort levelled proceedings in the 56th minute and Liverpool, who finished second last term, were sloppy at the back after the break.
Brendan Rodgers' men could have trailed but Steven Davis missed a golden opportunity and was made to pay as Sturridge reacted quickest to Sterling's header to prod home.

There were still nervy moments for the home crowd, who saw Morgan Schneiderlin's fierce effort superbly tipped onto the bar by Simon Mignolet, before substitute Shane Long inexplicably headed the rebound wide, but Liverpool held on for victory.

Ex-Southampton man Dejan Lovren was one of two new Liverpool signings included from the beginning, alongside Javier Manquillo, while wantaway midfielder Schneiderlin started alongside four fresh faces for the visitors, who won the corresponding fixture last season.Lovren's early touches attracted derision from the travelling supporters, but, while Liverpool controlled the opening stages, all they had to show for it was a pair of half-chances.

Sturridge first fired into the Kop before Sterling shot straight at Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster but a genuine piece of quality from Henderson helped them break the deadlock. From inside his own half, the midfielder hit an inch-perfect pass with his left foot that split defenders Jose Fonte and Clyne to set Sterling free. And the 19-year-old, who surged clear of the chasing Clyne, showed excellent composure to slot past Forster and open the scoring.

While a raft of senior players – and former manager Mauricio Pochettino – left Southampton in the summer, the club have been able to hang onto James Ward-Prowse, and the highly-rated prospect almost levelled when a long-range free-kick caught the wind in the 34th minute and nearly crept in.

However, Liverpool goalkeeper Mignolet was alert to the danger and was also called into action on the stroke of half-time, doing well to tip a fizzing Schneiderlin effort over.

They were warning signs the home side did not heed, though, and Clyne drew Southampton level 11 minutes after the break. After a thoroughly uninspiring start to the second half, the right-back played a neat one-two with Dusan Tadic, who sent his team-mate through on goal with a clever backheel.

And Clyne, who was allowed to run into the penalty area untracked by Lucas Leiva, hammered past Mignolet and into the top-right corner. It could have got worse for Liverpool when Ward-Prowse centred for a free Davis in the penalty area with the hosts in disarray at the back, but the Northern Ireland international could only shoot at Mignolet after an excellent team move.

Rickie Lambert came off the bench to feature against his old club, but it was his strike partner, Sturridge, who stole in front of Clyne to score the winner, while Mignolet's heroics at the other end were just as crucial.

Monk: Swansea can improve on Manchester United win

    445705_heroa.jpg

Swansea City boss Garry Monk has challenged his players to prove that their victory over Manchester United was no fluke.

Goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-Yueng handed the Swans a 2-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday in the opening game of the new Premier League season.

The victory marked the second time in 2014 that the Welsh club have triumphed at United following an FA Cup third-round success back in January but Monk is keen for his team to avoid complacency and believes that they are capable of producing more polished performances.

"We can get better, we can improve on that," he insisted to the press.

"We can be sharper in certain areas, but the whole key to it all was us coming together as a group, working for each other, and I think everyone saw that.

"We've worked very hard in pre-season, putting structures in place where we could adapt to different situations and it was very pleasing we did that for most of the game and limit Manchester United to very little chances."

Wayne Rooney's close-range overhead kick cancelled out Ki's opener before Sigurdsson stunned the home fans 18 minutes from time.

Swansea boss Monk added: "The disappointing thing was conceding from a set-piece and the marking involved but the character to come back shows what we've got in the squad. Now we have to make sure we prepare as best as possible every week and to perform as consistently as we can.

"There will be days when we lose but hopefully there will be more days like this."

:baffled:Zanzi blasts Benatia rumours: Mehdi's a Roma player

    445701_heroa.jpg

Roma CEO Italo Zanzi has rubbished rumours that Mehdi Benatia is on the verge of leaving the Stadio Olimpico.

The Morocco international has been linked with a move away from the Italian capital all summer long, with both Chelsea and Manchester United said to be keen on signing the centre-half before the close of the transfer window.

However, it is now being reported that representatives from Bayern Munich are now in Rome to wrap up a deal for the 27-year-old, having been forced to step up their pursuit for another defender due to the knee injury sustained by Javi Martinez in Wednesday's DFL-Supercup loss to Borussia Dortmund.

Zanzi, though, says there is no truth in the rumours that Benatia is bound for the exit door at the Olimpico.

"Mehdi is our player," the chief executive told Corriere dello Sport. "According to some media sources he had already been sold, but instead he is training with us in a very professional manner.

"It's a shame about all these rumours. He is a great person and is behaving in the best possible way.

"The transfer market is dynamic and until September 1 we will evaluate every opportunity and ensure we are ready [for the new season]."

Benatia joined Roma from Udinese last summer and was one of the key players in last season's surprise second-place finish in Serie A.

'Swansea grounded Van Gaal's mediocre Manchester United side'

    444360_heroa.jpg

Swansea City director John van Zweden says Manchester United have a "mediocre" squad and warned Louis van Gaal that he must buy players or risk a mid-table finish.

The Swans triumphed 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday in Van Gaal's first competitive game in charge since replacing David Moyes at the helm this summer.

And Van Zweden says while he has a lot of respect for his fellow Dutchman, he took great enjoyment out of Swansea spoiling his compatriot's Premier League debut.

"I had a great day! United thought they signed a giant with Van Gaal, but we really showed them on Saturday," he told NOS. "I saw scarfs and banners with his face all over town."

"We played a really good match and deserved the three points. I have a lot of respect for Van Gaal, but we put him with both feet on the ground.

"I mean, if you have a mediocre squad like United, it's going to be tough. I really hope for Van Gaal that they sign some players, because with this team they will end in the middle of the table."

The Red Devils have been linked with a host of players this summer and hope to conclude deals for Sporting defender Marcos Rojo, Ajax's Daley Blind and Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado before the close of the transfer window.

Luis Enrique: Messi will not be moved to accommodate Suarez

    442014_heroa.jpg

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has revealed that he afford Lionel Messi the freedom to play where he pleases this season.

Speculation has been rife ahead of the 2014-15 campaign that the new Blaugrana coach will ask his No.10 to accept a more withdrawn attacking role this term - as the Argentina international did during this summer's World Cup - so as to allow summer signing Luis Suarez to play in his preferred position of centre-forward.

However, Luis Enrique has now confirmed that Barca's attack will once again be based around Messi.

"Leo has so many options that we can't close off any to him," the former Spain international told reporters on Sunday. "He will have total freedom to move in attacking situations.

"He is the best in the world, without a doubt, and we adapt to his mobility."

Luis Enrique also refused to confirm whether he intends to primarily employ the versatile Javier Mascherano as a centre-half or in front of the back four this season.

"I love him as a defender and a midfield pivot," the coach enthused. "We'll see him in both positions."

Luis Enrique added that Mascherano could feature in Monday's friendly against Mexican outfit Club Leon, but that neither Messi nor Neymar will feature.

"We're not at 100 per cent, which is no surprise at this stage," the Barca boss stated. "But the squad have trained harder than I expected.

"They have made sacrifices and I am 100 per cent optimistic. The fans will like what they see [on Monday]."

Wenger: Wilshere was sick before Palace clash

    442675_heroa.jpg

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger defended Jack Wilshere after criticism of the midfielder's performance against Crystal Palace on Saturday, revealing the player had been unwell in the run-up to the game at the Emirates.

The Gunners beat their fellow Londoners 2-1 on the opening day of the new Premier League season, with Aaron Ramsey snatching the points late on.

However, Wilshere had already been withdrawn by the time of the Gunners' late winner, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain impressing in his place.

While Wenger conceded that Wilshere had struggled to impose himself against Palace, he pointed out that there had been mitigating circumstances.

"[Wilshere] was sick in the last few days and I felt he started to still miss some competitiveness," the Frenchman told reporters. "I had options on the bench as well."

Wenger also pointed out that that Wilshere should be afforded some time to build up some momentum given how much ankle trouble he has had to endure in recent seasons.

"Let's give him games," the Gunners boss implored. "For me, the most important thing for him is not to have any problem with his ankle.

"But it looks like he's on the right way on that front. He looks sharper every week at the moment."

AC Milan are chasing Grenier, claims agent

    445700_heroa.jpg

Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Clement Grenier is a transfer target for AC Milan, according to the player's agent.

Grenier has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this year, with Arsenal credited with an interest before Newcastle United emerged as unlikely contenders for his signature.

The France international fuelled speculation that he wanted to quit Lyon when he missed a training session at the start of August, although he later insisted that talk of a "controversy" was blown out of proportion.

His representative, Frederic Guerra, has since claimed that Milan and two unnamed clubs are still keen on signing the 23-year-old, though he made it clear Grenier would not aim to force an exit from Stade Gerland.

"We will wait and see, as the transfer window is still open. There are three interested clubs, including Milan," he told Foot Mercato.

"I have been in contact with the Rossoneri, as he is a player who is of interest to them.

"In any case, Clement isn't determined to leave Lyon at all costs."

Grenier has a contract until June 2016 with Lyon.

Suarez will play on Monday, confirms Luis Enrique

    445176_heroa.jpg

Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique has confirmed Luis Suarez will play in the club's pre-season clash with Club Leon on Monday.

The Uruguayan returned to training this weekend after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced his ban from 'all football-related activity' that allows him to take part in training and club friendly matches.

And Luis Enrique has been sufficiently impressed by Suarez to allow him some playing time in Monday's Gamper Trophy encounter.

"Luis Suarez will play some minutes in the Gamper tomorrow," the Barca boss told reporters on Sunday.

"During two training sessions he's already shown he is really talented. He looks like the player we were looking for."

Full-back Dani Alves has been linked with a move away from Barca this summer, with Sao Paulo claiming they would sell the Brazilian and sign Douglas as a direct replacement.

Luis Enrique, however, insists he does not wish to let Dani Alves leave in the immediate future and refused to comment on Douglas.

"I've said this several times. He arrived late to the squad [after the World Cup] but he has an [great] level of fitness. Alves is at Barca, he is in the squad and there he will remain. In the future, we'll see. I will have opportunities to meet with anyone," he said.

"I don't comment on players who are not here."

The former midfielder also explained that he allowed Gerard Deulofeu to join Sevilla on loan to continue his development and has challenged him to prove his deserves a place at Camp Nou in future.

"The club must always look to get stronger. Deulofeu was my decision: I don't believe he would have got enough minutes to continue his devlopment. It's a coach's decision.

"He needs to improve a few things and show he can be at a club like Barca."

Luis Enrique also revealed he has a clear idea on who will be his No.1 choice as goalkeeper for the coming season.

"Yes, I have preferences on who will play. Any of the three could. I'm clear about who I will select," he added.

Dunga: Neymar will not be a star until he wins the World Cup

    437828_heroa.jpg

Barcelona forward Neymar will not be a true star until he wins the World Cup, according to Brazil coach Dunga.

The 22-year-old was in inspired form during the tournament this summer until a back injury in the quarter-finals brought his campaign to a premature end.

The former Santos attacker enjoyed an inconsistent first season in La Liga in 2013-14 prior to the World Cup finals and, while accepting he is the country's top player, Dunga does not believe Neymar to be a star of the game just yet.

"He's the best player in Brazil, but no star. To have star status, you have to have world champion credentials on your back," Dunga told Epoca.

"But we are going to work to make sure that, when he's with the Selecao, Neymar performs above the level that defines a star."

Dunga also feels criticism of Luiz Felipe Scolari was unjust after Brazil's 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany in the semi-finals.

"It is easy to say [critical things], to point out the faults in idols," he said. "[Scolari] is a winner, competent and principled. Brazil conceded the first goal and Germany didn't allow them to breathe."

The former World Cup-winning midfielder added that he will look to incorporate young talent and experience in his up-coming Brazil squads for games against Colombia and Ecuador next month.

"We need a mix of youth and veterans to sharpen competitiveness," he said.

All Chelsea players will get their chance, says Mourinho

    443913_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has pledged that all of his players will get a chance to stake a claim for a first-team place over the coming weeks.

The Portuguese has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal heading into the club's Premier League opener at Burnley on Monday, with the Blues squad bolstered during the close-season with Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, Filipe Luis and Didier Drogba.

Mourinho, though, does not expect his packed squad to be frustrated as there will be more than enough fixtures on his plate to have to rotate.

"You play 60 matches a season and you cannot play with the same players every time," he the club's official website.

"In the first three weeks you have one match per week but, after that, the cups start, the Champions League, internationals, so you have to rotate players.

"Everybody will have a chance. Nobody will feel as though they are first choice or second choice.

"For example, in midfield we have [John Obi] Mikel, [Nemanja] Matic, Ramires, Fabregas and [Marco] van Ginkel, so everybody will play and will feel useful, important."

Valero: Khedira would be a great signing for Fiorentina

    445689_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina midfielder Borja Valero says Sami Khedira, or any Real Madrid player, would be a welcome signing for the club.

Germany international Khedira has long been linked move away from Madrid, with Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea long believed to be pursuing the 27-year-old.

Bayern Munich have also emerged as possible suitors for Khedira following the serious knee injury to Javi Martinez, although Carlo Ancelotti stressed this week that he was not looking to offload the player.

Valero, who came through the youth system at Madrid and played in Fiorentina's 2-1 friendly win against his old club on Saturday, admits any player from Santiago Bernabeu would be welcome in Florence.

"Anyone who left Madrid would be a superb signing and a great addition for us," he told AS when asked about a possible bid for Khedira.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck after just four minutes in Warsaw on Saturday before goals from Mario Gomez and Marcos Alonso turned the tide for Fiorentina, but Valero believes los Blancos were saving themselves for the up-coming Spanish Supercopa clash with Atletico Madrid.

"They are a great team. When they change gear, it's hard to stop them. Their midfield is very strong and they know how to change tempo," he said.

"They haven't gone flat out because they wanted to avoid injuries as they have the Supercopa in a few days. But for us the game was very good and it's great to beat them.

"I'm not going to miss it, it will be a really interesting match. With the way Atletico play with pressure and intensity, and with the great team Madrid have, it will be a beautiful final to watch."

Guardiola fires warning over Bayern complacency

    445684_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola has warned his Bayern Munich players against the dangers of complacency ahead of their first-round DFB-Pokal clash.

Bayern begin the defence of the trophy with a trip to minnows Preussen Munster on Sunday, but their head coach insists their opponents represent a perilous step-up in class from amateur outfit BSV SW Rehden - the side they faced at the same stage last year.

"Anything can happen in the cup. If we think simply being Bayern Munich will be enough, it could be dangerous," he said.

"Now we face a third division team and they're all professionals. They have superb fans. It'll be a great atmosphere.

"We need time, but you don't get time in this competition. It's either in or out."

Bayern make Sunday's trip without a host of key individuals, including Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery, Thiago, Rafinha. Midfielder Javi Martinez is also missing after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in the DFL-Supercup defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

And Guardiola has called on his squad to show the mental fortitude required to compensate for their missing stars.

"We have to deal with the situation as we find it. All we can do is compensate over the next few weeks with mental strength and passion. But I'm confident it'll work out."

:baffled::dull:Moyes: I wanted to sign Bale & Ronaldo for Manchester United

David Moyes has admitted that he wanted to sign Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United.

The Scot was hand-picked by Sir Alex Ferguson as his successor last summer but oversaw a disastrous campaign as the Red Devils finished seventh and was sacked at the end of April.
The club's failings in the transfer market were subject to an internal inquiry 12 months ago, and they are faring no better this time around with new boss Louis van Gaal fielding a line-up consisting of youngsters and players tipped to leave the club for the defeat against Swansea.

And Moyes, who arrived at Carrington at four in the morning on the day he was sacked, admitted that he wanted to sign the very biggest names in football during his short reign, though he was reluctant to blame executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward for those failures.

"It's been well documented that we wanted Fabregas, Bale and Ronaldo," Moyes told the Daily Mail. "There was talk of Ronaldo when I first arrived. We were close to getting a couple of major names. I'm not getting in a blame game here but things just didn’t materialise.

"I had taken over from the most successful manager in history. The chief executive had taken over from one of the most renowned administrators in the game [David Gill]. So it was a new job for two people."
Moyes insists he was the right man for the United job, but accepts that following Ferguson would be beyond most managers.
"It was a step into the unknown and, looking back now, it was near enough the impossible job," he added.

"But it was the right job for me. I'd been at Everton for more than 11 years. We'd qualified for the Champions League, got to an FA Cup final, I'd been voted manager of the season three times. I was among the most experienced managers in the Premier League. United had always had British managers.

"I was devastated to lose the job because it was something I felt I could make a real success of. We knew it was going to take time to make the necessary changes. It was going to take time to evolve but we were in the process of making other important changes. In the end, I don't feel I was given time to succeed or fail."

Moyes said he would continue to follow the Red Devils' fortunes after his first close-season without a club since he was 16.

"It's going to hurt that I'm not managing Manchester United because that's obviously what I'd have liked to have been doing," he continued, "but I'll watch the games. I won't be running away from it. Football is something I've been involved in since I was a boy."
