    Brandao suspended over Motta headbutt

    446177_heroa.jpg

Bastia striker Brandao has been banned by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) over an incident involving Paris Saint-Germain's Thiago Motta.

Brandao appeared to headbutt the Italian midfielder in the tunnel following his side's 2-0 defeat to the French champions on Saturday,

PSG later confirmed that Motta had sustained a broken nose, while Bastia "unequivocally condemned" their player's actions.

Bastia opted to leave any punishment up to the French football authorities, with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi calling for Brandao to be banned for life.

On Thursday it was confirmed the LFP had suspended Brandao until a hearing on September 18.

"The disciplinary committee has formally submitted this case and, given the seriousness of the acts, Brandao is suspended until September 18, when there will be a full hearing with all parties present," Sebastian Deneux, president of the disciplinary committee, is quoted as saying by Le Parisien.

The 34-year-old is in his first season at Bastia after joining from Saint-Etienne, but will now miss at least three Ligue 1 fixtures - against Toulouse, Bordeaux and Lens - before his hearing next month.

Koeman confident Schneiderlin will stay at Southampton

    395212_heroa.jpg

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has reiterated that Morgan Schneiderlin will not be allowed to leave the club and is confident he will stay at St Mary's.

Goal understands Tottenham are planning a €20m bid for the France international with manager Mauricio Pochettino determined to land his former players before the close of the transfer window.

However, Koeman has reiterated his desire to keep Schneiderlin, following the departures of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Calum Chambers, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren, and praised his attitude."No, for us that [situation] is away [gone]," he told reporters. "The rumours about him are away. He played a fantastic match against Liverpool [last Sunday] and how he has acted is fantastic.

"He has to continue to show his qualities like on Sunday and we are happy to have him in the squad."It doesn't depend on offers. He will stay at Southampton."

Koeman also spoke in some length about new signing Dusan Tadic – who enjoyed an encouraging debut in the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool last weekend – and youngster James Ward-Prowse, highlighting the impact both made at Anfield in Southampton's Premier League opener.

"Tadic played well," he continued. "He played the assist for our goal. He is a quality player."He and [Graziano] Pelle have to realise, though, it is not the Dutch league. It is high tempo during the whole match."Sometimes they have a problem with that, but little-by-little they will show why we signed these players."

Koeman added about Ward-Prowse: "He is a great talent. I hope and I think he will have a great future."He has already played a lot in the first team and is a boy from the academy. He is a great player."He has a good feel for good positions in the midfield and he is important for set pieces. I told him I really like him this week. He has a great future."

Ward-Prowse has been compared with England legend David Beckham, but Koeman said: "Don't put names like that. It will make a lot of pressure for him.
"Of course, Beckham was a great player and it is difficult to compare players to him, but I believe in his [Ward-Prowse's] qualities. If he is showing these abilities now then he will have a great future."

    Suarez: I didn't feel like a footballer

    446915_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Luis Suarez says he didn't feel like a footballer after being forced to train alone during the first few weeks of his four-month ban.

The Uruguay striker was handed the suspension for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup group stage match earlier this summer.

The ban applied to all footballing activity, meaning he was only allowed to keep up his fitness on his own after signing for Barcelona from Liverpool in an €88 million deal in July.

But an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) saw the 27-year-old granted permission to train with his new team-mates and play in friendlies, though the length of the sanction remains intact.

"It was hard for me to train alone in a rectangle 10 by 10," he revealed.

"That made me not feel like a footballer. It felt weird. I'm a lot happier now that I am working with my new team-mates.

"It feels good to be able to tell my children that I am leaving the house to go to work."

It remains to be seen exactly where Suarez will feature in Barca coach Luis Enrique's new-look starting XI this season, but the striker says he is happy to operate in whatever role his new boss sees fit.

"I'll try to adapt to whatever position Luis Enrique asks me to play," he added.

"He knows me and he knows how I play. I'm at the biggest club in the world and I'm hungry to win the biggest trophies. Those are the challenges I like."

    Muller hungry for more titles

    436313_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has stated he is still hungry for more titles, despite admitting there is not much left for him to win.

Muller's World Cup win with Germany in July added to an honours list that already includes the Champions League, three Bundesliga titles, the Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup.

"There is not more much to win, that's already correct," he told Kicker.

"But anyway I cannot say I don't want to play more football. I love football. Of course there is only repetition, but that's why I cannot stop now."

The 24-year-old then revealed the difficulty Bayern face in matching their achievements of recent seasons, but added his belief the club are on course for another successful campaign.

He added: "I approach always the tasks positively. We have all the conditions to play a good season with Bayern. That's why I'm optimistic.

"The bar is high. If we win 3-0 in the Bundesliga, then the audience thinks, oh, today was nothing. This is because of the successes that we have achieved."

Muller and Bayern begin their Bundesliga campaign with an opener against Wolfsburg on Friday.

QPR sign Vargas on loan from Napoli

    447344_heroa.jpg

QPR have confirmed they have signed Eduardo Vargas on a season-long loan from Napoli.

The Chile international is the club's sixth signing of the summer and will wear the No.24 shirt at Loftus Road and says Mauricio Isla was a big factor in his decision to move to west London.

"I have come here to do as much as I can for QPR in the Premier League," he told the club's official website.

“I’ve spoken to Mauricio a lot and he said it’s a great, relaxed environment to work in, with a fantastic squad of players.

“The Premier League is the best in the world, the most exciting in the world, and I am looking forward to competing in what is a super-competitive division.”

Manager Harry Redknapp, meanwhile, says he was impressed by Vargas at the World Cup and says his versatility is a big asset.

"Eduardo is a quality player. He’s sharp, he’s bright, and he’s very lively on and off the ball," he added.

“He can play as a No.9, he can play in behind, he can play wide – he’s very versatile.

“I really liked the look of him during the World Cup and he’s a player our scouts have been looking at for some time.

“He’s been on our radar for a long time now and we've had reports on him, from our scout over there, for a while.

“We’ve had him watched a lot, over the last year or so, and the feedback has been very positive.

“I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring him in.”

AEL 1-2 Tottenham: Soldado and Kane seal Spurs win

    447358_heroa.jpg

Tottenham secured a 2-1 victory over AEL Limassol in their Europa League qualifier thanks to goals from Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane.

The Spurs duo struck in the last 20 minutes as Mauricio Pochettino's side put one foot in the group stages of Europe's second-tier competition.

It was far from straightforward for Tottenham in Larnaca, though, and they did not make a bright start as Soldado missed the target from six yards before AEL took the lead.

Paulinho was caught on the ball inside his own half, and as a result, the ball broke for Adrian Sardinero, who quickly sped through Tottenham's defence before producing a clever finish into the bottom-right corner.

Pochettino's men failed to produce an immediate response and were nearly two goals down 11 minutes later, when Lukasz Gikiewicz nodded Sardinero's cross just over the bar.

Kane, one of few positives for Spurs in the first half, tested AEL goalkeeper Karim Fegrouche twice in quick succession after the half-hour mark, but the Cypriot side continued to look more threatening.

And Sardinero went close again eight minutes before the break, darting in from the right before he forced Hugo Lloris into a fine save as Spurs ended the half on the back foot.

Both sides struggled to get going in the second half and, despite the introduction of Nacer Chadli and Mousa Dembele, Spurs looked bereft of creativity.

But Lamela – signed for a fee in the region of £25m from Roma last year – changed the game after coming off the bench, as, shortly after Kane was denied by the bar, the Argentinian set up Tottenham's equaliser.

His clever run through the middle drew in defenders and he followed it with a sublime pass that played in Soldado, who coolly hammered a first-time effort in.

And the second swiftly followed – just six minutes later – with Lamela playing a pivotal role again.

This time Lamela came in off the left and found Kane, who beat an opponent before firing past the helpless Fegrouche and seal victory for Spurs.

    Real Madrid make Negredo enquiry

    447305_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have contacted Manchester City enquiring about the availability of striker Alvaro Negredo, Goal understands.

The Spanish giants are in the market for a centre-forward to provide competition to Karim Benzema and are considering alternative options should Radamel Falcao's proposed switch to Santiago Bernabeu fail to materialise.

Negredo, who City value at €25 million, began last season in devastating fashion but lost his scoring touch after the turn of the year and failed to find the back of the net during the final four months of the campaign.

The Spaniard subsequently missed out on a place on Spain's World Cup squad and a broken metatarsal suffered in pre-season against Dundee is likely to see him ruled out until September.

Negredo, who faces competition from the likes of Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic for a starting spot at City, has also been attracting strong interest from Madrid's Liga rivals Valencia.

Goal understands that, as a result of the striker's family ties in Valencia, he would be open to a move to Estadio Mestalla although a late intervention from Madrid, who are being asked to be kept abreast of developments, could be decisive.

The 29-year-old, who had a spell with the Real Madrid B team earlier in his career before being offloaded to Almeria, would be open to a return to Spain and Carlo Ancelotti's side will likely be unperturbed by City's asking price.

Madrid are also set to free up funds from the sale of Manchester United target Angel Di Maria in the coming days, with Ancelotti revealing on Thursday that the Argentina international has asked to leave the club.

Lazio can reach European spots - Klose

    421267_heroa.jpg

Lazio’s Miroslav Klose has admitted that the club’s main goal for the season is to qualify for European competition again.
Lazio are without European football this season after their ninth-place finish in the Italian top flight last term.
However, following the arrival of the likes of Stefan de Vrij, Filip Djordjevic and Marco Parolo, Klose, who won the World Cup with Germany last month, feels the Rome club can challenge for the top six.
"We have two competitions, the League and the Coppa Italia. It will be important for us," Klose told reporters.

"We will play only on the Sunday, so during the week we will work hard. I am happy with new coach [Stefano Pioli], whilst many new players have arrived. Hopefully we will be good.

"I like this Lazio, now we have to continue to work together. It is important. When I arrived, the club bought six players and the squad moved forward well. Hopefully the same can happen this year."

The 36-year-old, who became the top goalscorer in World Cup history this summer, added that his personal objectives were only focused around helping the team.

"[My objectives] are the same as those of the team, we want to get into Europe," the German added. "Then we will see if we can fight for a higher position.

"I want to score more goals than last year, I had several injuries that did not allow me to perform as I wanted.

"We will consider everything that comes. But first we have to play as a team. Given that we will only be playing on weekends, we can win matches even in the final half-an-hour."

Klose announced his retirement from international football in August, but hinted that he wanted to see out his contract with Lazio before looking into coaching possibilities.

"I have a one-plus-one contract. Later I want to try and gain the licenses to become a coach. In football, you never know what can happen.

"I have been here for three years, it is important to work during the week and to do everything for Lazio.

"For me, this is a job, you must eat well and sleep much. We are professionals, it is normal to be like this."

Lazio start their Serie A campaign against AC Milan on August 31.

Club World Cup will stay in Morocco despite Ebola - Fifa

    437308_heroa.jpg

Fifa has confirmed Morocco will host the Club World Cup for a second successive year despite concerns about the Ebola epidemic.

Areas of western Africa have been struck by an outbreak of the virus, raising concerns about the suitability of the competition being held in Morocco in December.

However, the sport's world governing body has moved to ease any worries and assured the teams competing that the welfare of the players and staff will take precedence.

"The health of players, officials and supporters is an absolute priority during any Fifa competition," a statement read. "According to the World Health Organisation, there have not been any recorded cases of Ebola in Morocco, so consequently there is no reason to discuss a possible change of venue.

"Should the situation change, we will make contact with the participating clubs."
Champions League winners Real Madrid head the list of sides already qualified for the competition, with Auckland City, San Lorenzo, Cruz Azul and Moghreb Tetouan also taking part.

The final two teams to qualify will come from Africa and Asia, with the CAF Champions League still in the group stages and the Asian equivalent down to the last eight.

Pogba's agent: No contract talks with Juventus

    429525_heroa.jpg

Paul Pogba’s agent has stated that no contract talks with Juventus are underway, despite general manager Beppe Marotta claiming a renewal was close.

Pogba, who joined the Turin club on a free from Manchester United in 2012, is currently tied to the Bianconeri until 2016 but reportedly drew interest from several of Europe’s top clubs this summer.

And now it would seem that Marotta’s remarks that "talks to renew Pogba’s contract are underway" are wide of the mark.

"There has not been and there is no meeting with Juventus," Pogba’s agent told L’Equipe.

"We can repeat, however, that for now, Paul is fine in Turin."

The 21-year-old was one of the mainstays in Juve's title winning team last season, making 36 appearances in Serie A, before going on to feature in each of France’s five World Cup games under Didier Deschamps.

Dani Alves: I don't feel valued at Barca

    443490_heroa.jpg

Dani Alves believes he hasn't received the respect he deserves at Barcelona, but says he wants to stay to work under Luis Enrique.

The Brazilian was heavily rumoured to be on his way out of Camp Nou this summer after the player himself suggested towards the end of last season that he could leave before speculation that replacements were being sought began to grow.

However, Alves confirmed he will remain at the club under new coach Luis Enrique this season, but insists he does not feel he gets the respect he deserves.

"I have decided to stay here with Barca," Alves told a press conference.

"The day will come when I have to go. But I would like to get out with the feeling that I have been a great professional here. If I would leave now I would not go with that feeling."

"It is a habit that people will talk about myself here. I take it naturally. The criticism motivates me because they make me improve.

"I've earned the right to be respected. I haven’t felt that I have had support when I have had to defend myself in the face of everything that comes out in the press.

"I wasn't feeling backed with everything that was happening. I have information that I was on the market, that they wanted to bring other people in.

"When I was questioned about my contract on my return to Barcelona, I made it clear that I first needed to discuss it with Luis Enrique.

"It’s a pleasure to work with someone like Luis Enrique; he demands a lot from us and that is what inspires me.

"We have to work well and be demanding with ourselves. We have great challenges to look forward to this season.

"I needed to feel assured that he counts on me because we’ll be working with other during the whole of the new season."

Barcelona kick off their league campaign at home to Elche on Sunday, and with Alves set to feature, he is not fearful of their fiercest rivals after their Champions League success.

“Real Madrid have our respect, but it is not a team that I fear," said the 31-year-old.

"You have to compete with them."

Ronaldo will start against Atletico, confirms Ancelotti

    446758_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will start against Atletico in the Supercopa de Espana second-leg on Friday.

Ronaldo had been a doubt for the clash after he was substituted due to a muscle strain at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

However, Ancelotti confirmed the fitness of the Portuguese star after he trained with the squad on Thursday.

"Cristiano trained well with the group today," Ancelotti told a press conference.

"He has been training normally. He’s okay, he is available for tomorrow. He will be a starter."

After a 1-1 first-leg draw against Diego Simeone’s men, the 55-year-old says he is looking for more from his side in the away leg of the tie.

"I think we have to play with a little more intensity," he added. "The second part of the game we had offensive solutions, not the first, we were slow.

"The players are all well, but I'm going to change some positions in the field.

"We tend to play against Atletico a lot. I don't think it will change the style of play we've used before. They have the advantage of the result. They'll play with the same style as the first leg."

Ancelotti also declared he would stick with a 4-3-3 system despite the new roles of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez in the side.

Ancelotti said: "The three midfielders will be normal. You may have to change it sometimes, for different characteristics. Kroos and James have played, for example, with different characteristics, but that does not change the scheme.

"I am happy with James. He is adapting to our game, he played well in his first two games."

    Balotelli says goodbye to Milan

    443828_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli has bid farewell to his AC Milan team-mates ahead of his proposed move to Liverpool, the Serie A giants have revealed.

Rumours that Liverpool are keen to bring the controversial former Manchester City striker back to the Premier League gathered pace on Thursday, with reports suggesting a €20 million deal has been agreed with Milan.Italy star Balotelli trained with Italian side on Thursday, with Sky Sports Italia quoting him as telling the club's official TV station that it would be his final session with the San Siro outfit.

And Milan appeared to confirm the 24-year-old is heading for the exit door by posting a short message on their website announcing he has said his goodbyes.
"Mario Balotelli left Milanello's sporting centre at 13:30 (local time) after saying goodbye to his team-mates," read the statement.

"Before leaving the premises, the striker has said goodbye to members of Milan's press office."Ex-Inter man Balotelli returned to Serie A in January 2013, and has scored 26 goals in 43 league appearances for Milan.

However, speculation has grown that Milan were open to selling him mounted when they failed to qualify for the Champions League by finishing a disappointing eighth last season. Liverpool, meanwhile, are on the look out for a new striker following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona last month.

Should Balotelli complete a switch to Anfield this week, his Liverpool debut could come in their trip to his former club City on Monday.

Destro to Chelsea depends on Torres sale - agent

    447262_heroa.jpg

There is no chance of Mattia Destro moving to Chelsea this summer unless Fernando Torres is sold, according to the Roma striker's agent.

Reports this week have suggested that Roma are in talks with the Blues over a swap deal involving the two strikers, with Torres now third in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the summer arrivals of Diego Costa and Didier Drogba.

But while Renzo Contratto is aware of Chelsea's interest in his client, he does not consider any direct exchange with Torres likely and believes a move to west London would only be possible if the Blues manage to find a buyer for their out-of-favour Spaniard.

"If Chelsea sell Torres, maybe it’s possible they make an offer for Mattia," he told Goal. "Otherwise, no, [a deal cannot happen]."

"Chelsea is one of the top clubs in the world so any player would like to play for them, but I think it’s a very difficult transfer."

Torres has been a huge disappointment at Chelsea since arriving from Liverpool in January 2011, scoring just 49 goals in 172 appearances in all competitions.

It was revealed in June that Jose Mourinho had informed the Spaniard that he has no long-term future at Stamford Bridge, but the 30-year-old is happy to see out the final two years of his €200,000-a-week contract.

In any case, Contratto insists Destro is focused solely on Roma despite the speculation surrounding his future.

When asked about his client's frame of mind, he replied: "Mattia would prefer to stay in Rome to play in the Champions League and Serie A this season."

FA investigation prompts Crystal Palace sporting director to resign

    447239_heroa.jpg

Crystal Palace sporting director Iain Moody has resigned from his post with the south London club after the Football Association (FA) opened an investigation on him and Malky Mackay.

Reports emerged on Wednesday that both Moody and the former Cardiff City, who worked together at the Welsh club, had allegedly shared racist, sexist and homophobic texts, which the FA will now look into.

And Moody, who had been involved in Palace's search for a new manager following Tony Pulis's sudden departure just before the start of the season, has now decided to step down from his position at the club amid the controversy.

"In light of the events of yesterday, sporting director Iain Moody has tendered his resignation and it has been accepted with immediate effect," read a statement on the club's official website.

"There will be no further comment from the club on this matter."

Mackay had been a frontrunner to succeed Pulis at Selhurt Park but the allegations, coupled with Moody's resignation, mean that Palace will now look elsewhere in their search for a new manager.

Moody joined the Eagles in November 2013 after being axed by controversial Cardiff owner Vincent Tan, who infamously replaced the head of recruitment with 23-year-old Kazakh Alisher Apsalyamov.

The two clubs have endured strained relationships since, with Cardiff accusing Moody of obtaining their starting XI prior to a Premier League encounter which the Eagles won 3-0, with the Premier League eventually fining Palace €30,000.

Blanc: Signing Di Maria will be difficult

    447238_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc has hinted that his side continue to have an interest in Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria but stressed that it will not be easy to lure the Argentina international to Parc des Princes.

The French champions have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old for much of the summer but seemed to be priced out of a transfer due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions. However, since Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed earlier on Friday that the former Benfica man, who has also been strongly linked with Manchester United, has requested to move, the rumours have regained potency.

"There are many clubs interested in Di Maria," Blanc confirmed at a press conference on Thursday. "PSG cannot do what we want. It’s a difficult case."

    442629.jpg

The Parisian side are also straining to keep hold of young midfielder Adrien Rabiot, whose contract is up at the end of the season. Arsenal appear to lead the chase to sign the 19-year-old and Blanc is concerned that his side may be forced to sell.

"It is possible that Rabiot will leave us, but I cannot tell you the destination," he revealed.

"I think that his entourage are profiting from his contractual situation. Rabiot has a very good offer from PSG but apparently it’s not interesting. It’s a shame.

"I want Rabiot to stay, but the decision is not mine."

PSG travel to face Evian on Friday evening in their third Ligue 1 match of the season and they have been boosted by the confirmation that Thiago Motta will be able to feature after being headbutted in the tunnel last week by Brandao.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, however, is definitely sidelined, though Blanc indicated that the Swede will not be absent for much longer.
