Mario Balotelli heading for Liverpool medical

    mario-balotelli-ac-milan_3164072.jpg

Mario Balotelli is on his way to England for a medical ahead of his proposed move to Liverpool, Sky sources understand.

The AC Milan striker said his farewells to his team-mates after training on Thursday after a fee of around £16m was agreed between the clubs.Balotelli's discipline on and off the field was questioned in his stay with Manchester City from 2010 to 2013 and it was reported later on Thursday that Liverpool were demanding a good behaviour clause in his contract. He scored 17 goals for Milan last season but was booked nine times and sent off once.

Balotelli is reported to be arriving on a private jet later on Friday for a medical but the move will not be completed in time for him to make a debut against his former side on Monday night after the midday deadline passed.Liverpool have been looking for a striker since the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona earlier this summer, although boss Brendan Rodgers previously stated Balotelli was not one of his targets.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has mixed feelings about Balotelli's impending arrival at Anfield, telling Sky Sports: "They definitely need a striker, there’s no doubt about that.“At the moment they only have Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert - it looks like Fabio Borini is going to move on - and you need strikers.“Would he be the final piece of the jigsaw? Would he make the starting XI if everyone was fit and firing? Who knows?“At the moment Daniel Sturridge has got 36 goals in 50 games for Liverpool and at this moment he is the main man up front.

“Would Brendan then accommodate another striker, whoever that may be, like he did with Luis Suarez?“He has lots of options now, Brendan Rodgers, and I don’t think he will play the same team too often so they do need those options.

“The main thing for any player is what they do on the pitch. Both of those players had issues off the pitch, but I think it’s fair to say Suarez did a lot more on the pitch.“You will always get a little bit more freedom if you’re producing on the pitch, that’s the main thing for any player.

“Balotelli is a player who has been here before and did a lot of stuff that was good for us in the media. He probably didn’t quite show his potential at Manchester City and that, coupled with his off-the field problems, probably saw him depart.“He’s the Italian number one striker and you want to see good players here. Liverpool do need a striker.”

Tottenham target Fazio set for Sevilla departure, confirms Emery

    413006_heroa.jpg

Sevilla manager Unai Emery has confirmed that Tottenham target Federico Fazio will not play against Valencia as he is set to leave the club.

Tottenham had lined up a €21 million move for Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio but have turned to Fazio after third-party issues complicated their pursuit of the 23-year-old.

And Emery has now confirmed that Fazio is set to depart Ramon Sanchez Pijuan after seven years - for a fee matching his reported €10 million release clause - having made just under 200 appearances for the club.

"I have followed Fazio's evolution for a year and a half. When I arrived he was criticised," he said.

"In a year and a half he has grown tremendously and his release clause has stayed low, but that's football. Fazio is worth much more than that. We all feel sad that he is leaving."

However, Emery conceded that he would have liked to have retained the services of the 27-year-old, admitting: "He was our captain, his evolution has been incredible up until the last game that he played and this has attracted other clubs.

"If he goes it will be for the release clause in his contract but we would prefer it that he does not go. We wish him the best, we will want to replace him."

Should Fazio join Spurs he will become their fourth defensive signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Eric Dier, Ben Davies and goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

Barcelona are evolving - Dani Alves

    384648_heroa.jpg

Barcelona defender Dani Alves believes the club's evolution under Luis Enrique is imperative as they bid to compete for trophies this season.

The Catalan giants failed to win a major trophy last term as they were pipped to the league title by Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

The close-season signing of Luis Suarez from Liverpool has given Barcelona another option in their outstanding attack, which already includes Lionel Messi and Neymar.

The likes of Ivan Rakitic, Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen have also joined the club in recent months as new coach Enrique prepares for a title push in 2014-15 campaign .And Alves – who has decided to stay at Barca despite reports to the contrary – is confident Enrique can lead the club back to success.

"It is a pleasure to work with someone like Luis Enrique, he demands a lot from us and in the end that is what makes us excited," Alves said ahead of Barca's Liga opener against Elche on Sunday."We are working well and demanding a lot of ourselves. The target this year is a marvellous one.

"I think the teams that want to keep winning titles always have to be in evolution.
"We have the principal thing, which is clear ideas that are accepted by everyone. All that we need to do now is execute them."

Balotelli arrives at Liverpool training ground ahead of €20m move

    442151_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli has arrived at Liverpool’s training ground to complete his €20 million move to Anfield.

Liverpool have agreed a deal with AC Milan to sign the Italy international, who said goodbye to his team-mates after Thursday's training session.

Balotelli, who scored 18 goals in all competitions last season, is expected to finalise his switch over the weekend and Brendan Rodgers revealed on Friday that he had no qualms about acquiring a player with such a chequered history.

"Sometimes you have to take a risk with people, but a lot of the time if you take that risk you get a reward for it," said the Liverpool manager.

"No player would come into here if I felt it couldn’t work. If I can help the person, then it’s something I will look at too.

"People who know me well will tell you I look to try and develop the player and the person. Thankfully we have that culture here.

"I’ve shown before that as long as players care and want to learn, we can give them the opportunity to develop."

Balotelli's move could be swiftly followed by the acquisition of Samuel Eto'o, who has snubbed interest from Everton to sign a one-year contract with Liverpool.

:cool:Van Persie returns but Herrera & Rojo will miss Manchester United clash with Sunderland

    447268_heroa.jpg

Robin van Persie is set to return for Manchester United’s clash with Sunderland on Sunday but Louis van Gaal will be without Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo.

The striker missed United's 2-1 defeat to Swansea City last Saturday as he was short of match fitness having been granted an extended break following the World Cup.

Herrera, who made his United debut at Old Trafford last weekend, has been ruled out by Van Gaal, while Rojo, who joined the club from Sporting in a €20 million deal on Wednesday, has not yet been granted a work permit and will miss the trip to the Stadium of Light.

Jesse Lingard was handed a start by Van Gaal on the right flank against Swansea but was forced off after 23 minutes with a knee injury. Marouane Fellaini suffered an ankle injury during training earlier this week and joins Michael Carrick on the sidelines.

"Robin is ready to play, so that's a big benefit to the team. I'm very pleased that he is able to play," Van Gaal told MUTV.

"In theory [Rooney and Van Persie] could be a very good couple, they can score a lot of goals and I hope they can show that."

"Carrick from the beginning, but now also Herrera and Fellaini and Lingard. These four midfielders are injured, so we are thin in midfield now.

"Last week we have nine injuries, now we have seven. It is much too much. I think I never have had this as a manager, it's the first time but we have to live with this."

Eto'o undergoes medical ahead of Liverpool switch

    415100_heroa.jpg

Samuel Eto'o has opted to join Liverpool and is undergoing a medical on Friday ahead of signing a one-year deal, Goal understands.

Everton's late interest in the 33-year-old had threatened to derail Liverpool's move, with Roberto Martinez's side ready to offer a two-year contract, but the striker is excited by the prospect of working under Brendan Rodgers.

The Cameroon international's medical is taking place outside of the UK, while the deal could be finalised before Liverpool face Manchester City on Monday evening.

Eto'o is available on a free transfer having left Chelsea at the end of last season and had held talks with Ajax earlier this summer before the Dutch club pulled out of negotiations.

Eto'o scored 12 goals in 34 appearances for Chelsea last season but hit out at Jose Mourinho after the 51-year-old joked about not knowing the striker’s real age.

Liverpool are also poised to complete the signing of Mario Balotelli in a €20 million deal from AC Milan.

The Italy international has said goodbye to his team-mates at the Serie A club and has travelled to England for a medical.

    Depay signs PSV extension

    445693_heroa.jpg

Memphis Depay has pledged his future to PSV after signing a four year contract, the club have confirmed.

The 20-year-old winger is seen as the hottest prospect in Netherlands and a bright season in the Eredivisie was followed by an impressive World Cup campaign in Brazil and saw him attract the interest of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

As speculation grew over the youngster's future, PSV offered him a new contract to make him one of their highest earners and he has now signed a contract extension, tying him to the Eredivisie side until 2018.

"PSV have extended the contract of Memphis Depay until 2018," a statement on the club's website read.

Technical director Marcel Brands revealed the deal was a year in the making and spoke of his delight at securing the Netherlands international's signature.

"We have worked hard for one year behind the scenes to keep Memphis in Eindhoven this season," Brands said. "We are more than pleased that he enters this new commitment.

"The budget that was available for to bring in another winger has now been used to keep Memphis at PSV."

Depay, who is the top goalscorer in the Eredivisie after two games with four goals and one assist, says he hopes to improve further in Eindhoven.

"I want to develop myself in this team. Last season we have embarked on a path to success. I want to play for the titles and be important to the team.

"I am pleased that we have reached an agreement with the club."

PSV face reigning Eredivisie champions Ajax on Sunday at 16.45 CET.

Barcelona's move for Douglas in jeopardy

    447168_heroa.jpg

Barcelona's move for Sao Paulo defender Douglas has hit a stumbling block and could fall through, the Brazilian club have revealed.

The right-back has long been linked to a move to the Catalan giants, with Sao Paulo confirming on Wednesday that a move is imminent.

However, the deal may be set to collaps as the Brazilian club wish to see the 24-year-old loaned back to them for a season, but with the combination of the transfer ban handed down to the Spanish side by Fifa and the Brazilian transfer window being closed, things have become difficult.

The player must be registered at Barcelona before being loaned back to Sao Paulo, with the alternative being that Douglas wouldn't be able to make the move to Camp Nou until 2016.

Douglas has now returned to training with Sao Paulo and could end up staying there, coach Mauricy Ramalho has warned.

"First we need to get that situation sorted. I can't answer that question and then tomorrow we decide that Douglas will stay," he told reporters.

"We need to sort things out before we start talking. Otherwise we will just create a huge doubt in the player's head.

"Douglas is a Sao Paulo player. If he's in the right condition to play, he'll play. If he has a chance to, he'll play.

"There's no such as thing as holding back. He's ours, not Barcelona's. As long as there's no confirmation that he's out, he'll play. He hasn't signed anything yet."

Ramalho's words, though, are the opposite to those of vice-president Gil Guerreiro, who had earlier ensured the player will join Luis Enrique's side.

"We have everything resolved with Douglas, but no contracts have been signed yet," Gil Guerreiro told Radio Globo.

"There is a small problem now that we're trying to solve. We asked Barcelona to loan Douglas back to us for one year.

"But with their Fifa sanction, they can't. Now our lawyers are studying the situation to see what can be done. But the deal is done, Douglas will be a Barcelona player."

Xavi: I am still important to Barca

    447597_heroa.jpg

Barcelona captain Xavi insists that he can play a prominent role during Luis Enrique's first season in charge at Camp Nou.

The experienced midfielder had been linked to a move away from Camp Nou this summer, but decided to see out the remaining two years of his contract at the club and has been named captain of the Blaugrana this term.

Xavi, who retired from international football after the World Cup, is set to embark on his 17th season in the first team, where he has won seven Liga titles and three Champions League crowns. And he is determined to prove that, at the age of 34, he still has what it takes to play at the highest level, with his former team-mate now at the helm.

"My time with the national team has ended and now I'm concentrating on my only objective, which is Barca," Xavi said."I am ferociously competitive. I'll work hard to be useful. I'm more motivated than on my first day because I like what I'm seeing."I'm working hard to carry on being important. The coach makes the decisions but I'm ready for anything and will accept any situation."

The midfielder has also outlined the club's ambition this term: "We want to win at least one title."

Ivan Rakitic's arrival adds further quality to a strong midfield at Luis Enrique's disposal, with the former Barca great also signing the likes of Thomas Vermaelen, Jeremy Mathieu, Luis Suarez and Oscar Bravo in recent months.Xavi maintains that the level of competition will prove a positive for the club this year.

"It's good for the team, we all have to be ready because it's a long season," he added. "Everyone here has extraordinary quality. We've signed very good players both at a football and personal level. The human level is the most outstanding in recent years.

"Co-existence and harmony are fantastic. Results will tell the story but we're starting from the basis that this is a fantastic group."

Balotelli is worth the risk for Liverpool - Rodgers

    443828_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool are prepared to take "a risk" by signing Mario Balotelli.

The 24-year-old has travelled to England on Friday to undergo a medical ahead of a €20 million move from AC Milan.

Rodgers refused to confirm Liverpool’s approach for the Italy international on Friday but admitted the club are willing to gamble on the former Manchester City striker.

"I can categorically tell you I can't speak about it before the player has signed," said the Liverpool manager.

"We always said we were working for another striker. If we can do a deal for anyone we will.

"Sometimes you have to take a risk with people, but a lot of the time if you take that risk you get a reward for it.

"It’s not easy finding new players as there’s a small pool of players we could actually buy. But a lot of good work is going on."

Rodgers insists he has no apprehensions about Balotelli’s behaviour and says the forward will be given the chance to develop at Anfield.

"We have an intensive code of conduct for any member of staff here. That covers everyone, not one particular individual," said Rodgers.

"Nothing will ever shake our fantastic environment. We’ve got a learning environment for players, lots of players improving.

"No player would come into here if I felt it couldn’t work. If I can help the person, then it’s something I will look at too.

"People who know me well will tell you I look to try and develop the player and the person. Thankfully we have that culture here.

Mourinho: Cech is unhappy at Chelsea

    410798_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho admits Petr Cech is unhappy at Chelsea after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgium international was handed his first start for Chelsea on Monday as Mourinho's men sealed a 3-1 win against Burnley.

It is understood that Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to make the first move for Cech, while Real Madrid and Monaco are also monitoring the 32-year-old, who has been encouraged by Chelsea to find a new club before the transfer window closes.

"[He is a] top professional, working as always, being a group man as always, being a Chelsea man as always," Mourinho said on Friday.

"I don’t believe he is completely happy as is everyone that didn’t start the game. They clearly feel that some are playing [ahead of them].

"With one match per week in August some are not playing but Petr’s behaviour has been fantastic and that’s important."

Mourinho insists Chelsea will work with Cech to find a solution but maintains the interests of the club will always be the priority.

"We have to think about the players and the players deserve respect and the players deserve cooperation from the club but the club is the most important thing," said Mourinho.

"For me football is about club, team, players, managers - so I am the last one - but the club is the most important thing. We cannot give players things and put the players in front of the team, in front of the club. It must be always the other way.

"Every decision, the first thing we think is about the club and the team. If you can make it good for the club, the team and the players, that’s the perfect situation."

Mourinho also reiterated that Chelsea are unlikely to make any more signings following the arrivals of Diego Costa, Filipe Luis, Cesc Fabregas and Didier Drogba this summer.

"We are very calm, my club did a fantastic job not just because we got what we need but because we did it in a record time for us," he added.

"We’d have been happy if the market closed by the 31st of July instead the end of August."

Dortmund are a cheap imitation of Bayern - Rummenigge

    420821_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has taken another shot at Borussia Dortmund, claiming they have "copied" the Bavarian giants.

Dortmund have been unable to match Bayern in the league in each of the last two seasons, finishing 25 and 19 points behind them, respectively.

The latest financial reports from Dortmund show the club have received a boost in revenue after taking on two new major shareholders, while Bayern have taken on a total of three new companies since February last year.

And Rummenigge believes this is just another example of the North Rhine-Westphalia club "copying" the Bundesliga champions, insisting they are merely a cheap imitation.

"That's the biggest compliment Borussia Dortmund could ever give Bayern Munich," he said. "But it is just like in real life: each copy is not as good as the original."

The Bundesliga kicks off on Friday with Bayern Munich hosting Wolfsburg, before Borussia Dortmund face Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Welbeck set for talks over Manchester United future

    385818_heroa.jpg

Danny Welbeck is looking to enter talks with Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal to seek clarity over his Old Trafford future.

Welbeck has already had meetings with Van Gaal this summer and a host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle and Sunderland, are keeping an eye on the situation in case the England striker becomes available.

The 23-year-old will look to be reassured that he will receive regular football this coming season, but it is understood Van Gaal considers him a rotation option behind Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.

Welbeck has been at United since the age of 9 and would find it a wrench to move on, but believes he should be a starter.

He had previously expressed a desire to leave under former boss David Moyes after he was restricted to a role on the left-hand side, and although his urgency to leave was lessened by the Scot's departure he has remained quiet over the summer as he weighs up his options.

United would likely ask for around €20 million as Welbeck has two years remaining on his current deal, though Goal understands both Newcastle and Sunderland would only stretch as far as a loan.

And as well as north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, Hull City, Everton and West Ham are also keeping an eye on proceedings.

Welbeck already knows Sunderland well, having spent the 2010-11 season on loan at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats have turned to Welbeck after they failed with their bids for Eduardo Vargas - who is signing for QPR - and Fabio Borini.
    416941_heroa.jpg

Despite Sunderland agreeing to pay €17.5m for him in July, the Italian striker is not willing to make the move back to Wearside.

Even the imminent arrival of Mario Balotelli at Liverpool is not likely to convince Borini to make the move to Gus Poyet's team, especially as Goal understands Napoli could be ready to make an offer in the final days of the transfer window.

Sunderland have therefore turned their attentions to Welbeck, but Newcastle are also in the hunt for another striker and after missing out on Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette and Loic Remy, a move for the United forward is now on their agenda.

Welbeck marked his Premier League debut with a 30-yard strike against Stoke City in 2008, and has scored a total of 26 league goals in 116 appearances.

He struck nine times in the top division last season, his best to date, after hitting the net just once in 2012-13 in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season.
