Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (2-1 on agg): Mandzukic clinches Supercopa de Espana

    447690_heroa.jpg

Mario Mandzukic fired Atletico Madrid to a 1-0 (2-1 agg) win over city rivals Real Madrid to lift the Supercopa de Espana.

Raul Garcia's last-gasp goal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday had put Atletico into a strong position, though they required a first home win over Real since June 1999 to secure the first trophy of Spain's season.

The home side got off to a dream start at the Vicente Calderon on Friday, with Mandzukic opening his account for the club with the Supercopa's quickest ever goal, coming just 81 seconds into the contest.A typically ill-tempered clash saw a raging Diego Simeone dismissed from the touchline only 26 minutes in.

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared despite picking up an injury in the first leg, but the Portuguese's presence could not inspire Real back into the match, and Luka Modric's late sending off summed up their frustrations. For Atletico, the triumph brings the fifth trophy of Simeone's reign and makes up for last season's Supercopa loss to Barcelona.

With Ronaldo fit enough only for the bench, the absence of Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira from Ancelotti's squad was noteworthy as both midfielders itch for a move before the transfer window slams shut.Atletico paired pre-season signings Antoine Griezmann and Mandzukic in attack for the first time.

And the partnership reaped instant reward just 81 seconds in as the Frenchman pounced on slack Sergio Ramos marking to give Mandzukic the simple task of beating Iker Casillas one-on-one.A scrappy response was interjected by clashes between players, as Simeone simmered on the sidelines.Miguel Angel Moya superbly denied James Rodriguez 23 minutes in low to his right after fine work on the edge of the area from Daniel Carvajal.

Eventually, the Argentinian boss boiled over as Fabio Coentrao's trailing leg caught Juanfran in the face and Simeone marched to the stands whipping the home fans into a frenzy after being ejected by referee David Fernandez.Simeone's departure perhaps affected Atletico and Real looked more likely to score afterwards, however, Gareth Bale and Rodriguez could not direct late efforts on target as the hosts made it to the break ahead.

Ronaldo emerged from the bench at half-time, but Atletico went close early on in the second half as Garcia's flick bounced onto the goalline and was eventually scrambled clear.Garcia again curled wide, though Ronaldo began to come to life around the hour mark, blasting a 30-yarder down Moya's throat.

As the Portuguese and Bale saw vociferous penalty appeals waved away, Real grew frustrated and Atletico sensed the chance to pick them off.First Koke launched a swerving effort inches over Casillas' crossbar, before Griezmann dragged across goal after a rapid breakaway.

A Real onslaught failed to materialise as poor touches from Bale and Ronaldo in the final third saw late openings fizzle into nothing and Modric was dismissed after a late challenge on substitute Cristian Rodriguez. And Atletico held on for an impressive victory, starting the season in supreme fashion as they look to prove last season's title win was no fluke.

Supercopa victory not revenge, says Koke

    447694_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke has denied his side's Supercopa victory over Real Madrid was about revenge for last season's Champions League final.

The Spanish champions had looked set to pull off an unlikely result against their city rivals in May, but Carlo Ancelotti's men won in extra-time after a last-second Sergio Ramos equaliser.

Diego Simeone's side got their season off to a dream start, with Mario Mandzukic's goal sealing a 2-1 aggregate win in the first domestic trophy of the season, but Koke is not looking back.

"This isn't about revenge," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"They won the Champions League and now we have won the Supercopa. This has just started. We are very proud of the team and the people."

Atletico lost the likes of Diego Costa and Filipe Luis over the summer but Koke feels that, with the core of last season's Liga-winning team in place, his club have a solid foundation upon which to build.

"It seemed like everything was complicated by the departure of team-mates but we have relied on the basis of the group and the new guys who have come in.

"Look how well we have started - with a title in front of our fans!"

    Simeone apologises for dismissal

    447719_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone apologised after he was sent to the stands in Atletico Madrid's Supercopa de Espana victory over Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

The Argentine was given his marching orders just 26 minutes in following another trademark altercation with officials on the touchline.

By that point Mario Mandzukic had put his side 1-0 in front on the night and 2-1 ahead on aggregate, after just two minutes.

That goal proved enough to clinch the trophy and Simeone was quick to say sorry for his actions following the game, blaming his behaviour on the emotions of the night.

He said: "It was the anxiety, nerves. I can only apologise."

The result will give Atletico momentum as they prepare to begin their La Liga defence against Rayo Vallecano on August 25, with Simeone admitting the victory has come as a timely boost.

"I am delighted with the work of these boys," he added.

"We have faced a great champion like Madrid twice and to beat a great opponent like this gives us great energy and motivation moving forwards."

Ancelotti: We didn't need Di Maria

    446164_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti insists that his side did not miss Angel Di Maria in the Supercopa loss to Atletico Madrid on Friday.

The Argentine was left out of the European champions' matchday squad for the trip to the Vicente Calderon, where Diego Simeone's side won 1-0 to seal a 2-1 aggregate victory.

However, the former Chelsea and AC Milan coach believes that the ex-Benfica winger would not have been able to make a difference.

"It was a technical decision that we did not need Di Maria," he told reporters after the game.

"In the second half we lost control of the game. We needed more possession like in the first half of the game. Afterwards, we gave more opportunities to Atletico.

"We haven't spoken about winning six titles. We've spoken about being the best candidate for titles, but not about winning six.

"We didn't play well this game, but it's better to lose this match than [the Champions League final] in Lisbon."

Ramos: Madrid will get over defeat

    447707_heroa.jpg

Sergio Ramos says Real Madrid will soon forget about their Supercopa de Espana defeat to Atletico Madrid following their 1-0 (2-1 agg) loss on Friday.

Mario Mandzukic struck after just two minutes to give the home side the lead and Diego Simeone's men held on to lift the trophy and strike an early mental blow ahead of the new La Liga season.

But Ramos, while admitting he would've been delighted to lift the trophy, has dismissed the significance of the result and applauded Atletico for their efforts.

"Whenever we lose it is a sad day," the defender said. "We would've liked to have won the trophy but kudos to Atletico Madrid.

"We leave the stadium relaxed. They scored the goal and the crowd pushed them forward - I congratulate them."

"We've had to handle defeat many times and you can't drawn any conclusions. The defeat will pass and we will have brighter days."

Arsenal close in on Manolas signing

    444260_heroa.jpg

Arsenal closed in on the signing of Kostas Manolas on Friday after holding fresh talks with his representatives.

The Gunners are working on a deal to sign the defender from Olympiakos after opening negotiations with the Greek club last week.

Manolas' advisers flew into the UK to step up talks about the structure of the deal and to discuss personal terms.

Arsenal have been quoted a fee of €11m by Olympiakos for Manolas although the Greek club could be willing to accept a lower figure if all of the costs are paid up front.

Goal revealed last week that Arsene Wenger had sanctioned a formal move for the Greece international after identifying him as a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen, who joined Barcelona a fortnight ago.

The centre-back, 23, played in the Champions League for his club last season and featured for Greece in this summer's World Cup.

Wenger wants to push through a deal for a new centre-back to join rookie Calum Chambers in providing cover for established pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

The Arsenal boss has competition to sign Manolas, who has attracted interest from Manchester United, Juventus and Napoli.

With 10 days of the transfer window remaining, Wenger is also in the market for a midfield anchorman who might also be able to provide cover for the centre-back position.

Arsenal have also had a €25million bid for Portugal international William Carvalho rejected by Sporting Lisbon.

They are expected to wait to see if they can overcome Besiktas in their Champions League qualifier - with the tie goal-less ahead of the second leg at Emirates Stadium next week - before upping their offer for Carvalho.

The Gunners are also monitoring the availability of Sami Khedira, who has rejected a new Real Madrid contract and could leave the Bernabeu in the final days of the window.

Guardiola: Victory good for our heads

    445855_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola believes that his side's 2-1 Bundesliga victory over Wolfsburg will improve the mentality within the squad.

The German champions were made to work hard to win the opening league game of the new season, with Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller netting either side of half-time.

The Spaniard accepts that Wolfsburg were more than a match for his players after the break but says that the result was all that mattered.

"For every coach in the world, victory is the most important thing," he is quoted as saying by the club's official website.

"In general, I am very, very satisfied. We fought well. In the second half, Wolfsburg were better, but we shouldn't forget that we played one of the best teams in the league.

"Victory was important for our heads."

Holger Badstuber made his first Bundesliga appearance in almost two years and described the experience as a "perfect day".

"Of course it was emotional for me to be able to play after such a long time in front of the home crowd. The beautiful thing is that we got victory here.

"For me, it was a perfect day."

Bayern Munich 2-1 Wolfsburg: Robben and Muller seal narrow win

    447661_heroa.jpg

Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben fired Bayern Munich to a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg in their opening Bundesliga game of the season.

Despite looking somewhat rusty in the early stages of Friday's clash, the reigning champions were soon in control and took the lead through Muller eight minutes before the interval. The home side were two up within a couple of minutes of the restart courtesy of a Robben strike, but Ivica Olic pulled one back for Wolfsburg with a well-struck curling effort five minutes later.

Robert Lewandowski - making his league debut for the Bavarian giants - should have put the result beyond doubt when he found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Max Grun, before substitute Junior Malanda missed a golden opportunity to claim a share of the spoils.Pep Guardiola handed 17-year-old midfielder Gianluca Gaudino a first Bundesilga appearance in the absence of Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thiago Alcantra and Franck Ribery, with the player becoming the fourth-youngest debutant in the club’s history.

The hosts' contingent of World Cup-winning Germany internationals were recognised in front of their home fans before kick-off, and it was one of the heroes of Brazil who had the first shot on goal.Muller collected the ball from a long-range Philipp Lahm pass, but his effort from a tight angle was comfortably collected by Grun.

Bayern were not having things all their own way, and a mistake by Manuel Neuer in the 16th minute almost opened the door for Wolfsburg to break the deadlock through Olic. The hosts, though, looked like they were beginning to find their feet, and Lewandowski was at full stretch to meet another Lahm ball with a volley shortly before the half-hour mark, drawing a superb one-handed save from Grun.

And that pressure eventually told when Muller got the slightest of touches to a Robben cross from the right, diverting the ball beyond a helpless Grun.Bayern doubled the advantage less than two minutes after the break as Robben exchanged passes with Lewandowski before sneaking the ball inside the left-hand post.

Former Bayern striker Olic pulled Wolfsburg right back into the match five minutes later with a wonderful left-footed curling effort that went in off the underside of the crossbar.Lewandowski should have had a goal of his own to celebrate two minutes before the hour mark, but was unable to lift the ball over Grun, before David Alaba fired free-kick straight at the goalkeeper.

Wolfsburg came even closer to finding the net 10 minutes from time. Max Arnold whipped in a cross to Malanda, whose effort deflected off Neuer and onto the crossbar, but the striker was unable to sort his feet out as he inexplicably touched the ball wide from the rebound.

Sebastian Rode saw a goal chalked off for offside and Robben clipped the bar as Bayern sought comfort, but two goals proved to be good enough to see off a stubborn Wolfsburg and start their season with a win for the third year in a row.

Evian 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain: Cabaye sees red in bore draw

    447656_heroa.jpg

Yohan Cabaye was sent off as Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 0-0 draw by Evian on Friday night.

The visitors were missing influential striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Motta and captain Thiago Silva, with the absence of the former in particular proving decisive in a first half of few chances.

Edinson Cavani - having opened his account for the season against Bastia last weekend - came close with a long-range free-kick before the interval as the hosts successfully frustrated PSG.Having shipped six goals to Rennes in their last outing, Pascal Dupraz's defence were in much better shape on their return to Annecy and were boosted by Cabaye picking up a second yellow card shortly after the hour.

With a man advantage, the hosts saw out the draw to pick up their first point of the new campaign as PSG's stuttering start to their quest for a third-consecutive league title continues.

Blaise Matuidi's burst and cross from the left spelt danger for Evian in the opening five minutes before the hosts managed to clear as PSG quickly settled into their rhythm. However, Blanc's men struggled to break down an Evian side who appeared more than happy to sit deep and allow their opponents plenty of possession.

Cavani's tame 25-yard free-kick marked the visitors' first attempt on target after 22 minutes, shortly before Nicki Bille Nielsen's dipping set-piece effort threatened Salvatore Sirigu at the other end.

Uruguay striker Cavani went close again before the half-hour as he twisted away from two defenders only for Jesper Hansen to keep out his strike. However, the chances dried up before the break, with Evian able to successfully stifle the champions - who struggled to muster too much of note without the talismanic Ibrahimovic.

PSG continued to dominate possession after the break but frustration was evident among Blanc's men as Cavani was adjudged offside, having been sent through on goal, before Cabaye picked up a second yellow card.A late challenge on Bille Nielsen saw him sent off for the first time in a PSG shirt to sum up a disappointing night for the Parisians.

Cavani and Nicolas Benezet had opportunities for either side late but it ended goalless as Evian again frustrated the title holders at the Parc des Sports.

Muller: We had to grit our teeth

    447659_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller has admitted his side were made to dig deep to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 in their opening Bundesliga game.

The Bavarians got their Bundesliga campaign off to a winning start thanks to goals from the Germany international and Arjen Robben either side of half-time, though Ivica Olic's strike ensured a nervy ending.

However, Muller believes that the right team won on the night but conceded that there was plenty of tension in the Bayern camp.

"[Bayern's World Cup winners] tried to play like we did in the final," he is quoted as saying by the Bundesliga's official website.

"It wasn't that different - there was plenty of tension but I think the best team won. We pulled together and managed to grit our teeth for the last 10 minutes.

"You have to do that sometimes."

Meanwhile, Robben has admitted that his side were left a little short of fitness due to the World Cup and reserved special praise for Gianluca Gaudino, who shone on his Bundesliga debut.

"Opening matches are always a bit strange. We didn't have much preparation because of the World Cup, not much training and lots of injuries, but we shouldn't be making excuses.

"The three points are the most important thing. Big compliment to the lads, especially young Gaudino. I'm very proud of him."

    Blanc: No need to worry

    444972_heroa.jpg

Laurent Blanc says he is not worried about Paris Saint-Germain's stuttering start to their Ligue 1 title defence after the 0-0 draw with Evian.

PSG were without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Motta and Thiago Silva for Friday's clash and as a result clear chances were few and far between.

Yohan Cabaye was also shown a red card to compound a disappointing night - which leaves the French champions on five points after three games, but Blanc is refusing to panic.

He said: "Evian wanted to keep things tight and defended well. We were not able to ask them any questions with 11 men, so it was harder to do than 10.

"Considering the appearance, this point is a good one for Paris and Evian. We did not quite create a dangerous situation to win. So it's a mixed feeling a little, but there is no need to worry."

Blaise Matuidi was also quick to acknowledge Evian's defensive resilience and said he and his team-mates must move the ball quicker to break down their opponents.

"Tonight, we ran into a team that had conceded nine goals in two days and therefore didn't want to attack," he added.

"They were very well grouped and we struggled to break through the lines. This is what we missed, playing faster."

Barcelona are evolving - Dani Alves

    384648_heroa.jpg

Barcelona defender Dani Alves believes the club's evolution under Luis Enrique is imperative as they bid to compete for trophies this season.

The Catalan giants failed to win a major trophy last term as they were pipped to the league title by Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid. The close-season signing of Luis Suarez from Liverpool has given Barcelona another option in their outstanding attack, which already includes Lionel Messi and Neymar.

The likes of Ivan Rakitic, Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen have also joined the club in recent months as new coach Enrique prepares for a title push in 2014-15 campaign .And Alves – who has decided to stay at Barca despite reports to the contrary – is confident Enrique can lead the club back to success.

"It is a pleasure to work with someone like Luis Enrique, he demands a lot from us and in the end that is what makes us excited," Alves said ahead of Barca's Liga opener against Elche on Sunday."We are working well and demanding a lot of ourselves. The target this year is a marvellous one.

"I think the teams that want to keep winning titles always have to be in evolution.
"We have the principal thing, which is clear ideas that are accepted by everyone. All that we need to do now is execute them."
