Sunderland 1-1 Manchester United: Van Gaal's men stutter against resolute Black Cats

    448284_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's disappointing start to the new Premier League season continued as a lacklustre showing ended in a draw with Sunderland.

Despite starting slowly, Louis van Gaal's side took the lead as Antonio Valencia rolled in a perfect cross from the right, and Juan Mata was on hand to tap-in a yard from goal.

That goal seemed to settle the Red Devils, but they were soon pegged back as Jack Rodwell powerfully headed home his first goal for the Black Cats since his summer move from Manchester City.

The visitors introduced Adnan Januzaj in the second half in search of a winning goal, but the visitors weren't able to force Vito Mannone into a meaningful save after the break.

All eyes were again on Van Gaal after United began their campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea City last week.

As if to add to the pressure, all three of the club's close-season signings – Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo – were unavailable on Sunday.

Yet few would have predicted the level of disjointedness on display as United struggled badly, particularly in defence.

It was the home side who enjoyed the brighter start as United began nervously in possession, with Lee Cattermole - buoyed by a wonder goal against West Brom last week - hitting a half-volley just wide.

There were certainly signs of the nerves Van Gaal alluded to last week in his charges' display, although a botched attempt to play out from the back fortuitously led to an opening as Tom Cleverley curled over early on.

But it was Sunderland causing all the problems, the impressive Will Buckley cutting inside to feed Connor Wickham - who could only hit straight at David De Gea with the goal gaping.

Perhaps awoken by that miss, United responded to take the lead as Valencia found space on the wing and sent a vicious low cross to the back post that Mata was able to tap into an empty net.

But the goal did not bring an improvement in the visitors' general play and Sunderland levelled in the 30th minute, Rodwell heading home Sebastian Larsson's corner at the front post.

United did begin to see more of the ball thereafter, although it was Sunderland who created the first half's final chance when Steven Fletcher's overhead kick went tamely wide.

Whatever Van Gaal said to his players at the interval did not have the desired effect as further poor defending let in Wickham, who saw his fizzing strike turned cleared off the line by Tyler Blackett.

Van Gaal's men then enjoyed a spell of pressure and were denied a penalty when Ashley Young went down under a challenge from former United defender Wes Brown.

The visitors continued to press forward in search of a winner but, despite some nervous Sunderland defending, were not able to find the Midas touch in front of goal.

Official: West Brom sign Porto's Varela on loan

    448330_heroa.jpg

West Brom have announced the signing of Porto winger Silvestre Varela on a season-long loan.

The Portugal international becomes the 10th new arrival at the Hawthorns since the end of last season after passing a medical.

The versatile wideman has 26 international caps to his name and arrives in the Premier League with a record of 30 goals from 115 Primeira Liga appearances for Porto.

"Silvestre is a vastly-experienced player, both with Porto and his national team, and I'm delighted we've managed to secure his services," said head coach Alan Irvine.

"He's got pace and power, gets his fair share of goals and is also a creator of chances for others.

"He's a fantastic addition to our squad."

The 29-year-old was part of the Porto team that won the Europa League in 2011.

He joins a West Brom side who have started the Premier League season with draws against both Sunderland and Southampton.

Hull City agree deal to sign Dawson

    448295_heroa.jpg

Hull City manager Steve Bruce is has revealed he has agreed a deal in principle to sign Tottenham defender Michael Dawson.

The 30-year-old, who has won four England caps, appears to be surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane and is on the verge of moving to the KC Stadium.

"Managers are always going to say we are thin on the ground," Bruce said after Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw with Stoke City.

"It's my job to try and bring players in, but we're close to one in particular that we hope we can get over the line, although I thought I had Jordan Rhodes 24 hours ago and that now seems to be further away than it's ever been after being negotiated for a week."

When asked about Dawson, though, Bruce added: "I'm hopeful that can be done, I believe there is a deal in principle.

"But we'll see what this week brings and whether we can bring in the two or three people we need to give the squad a hand because we've already played five competitive games."

Hull had two bids for Blackburn Rovers striker Rhodes "respectfully and categorically rejected", the Championship club confirmed on Saturday.

Pochettino: Premier League table means nothing yet

    444681_heroa.jpg

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino insists there is still plenty of work to do despite overseeing a 4-0 win against QPR that sent Spurs to the top of the table.

Nacer Chadli's double, along with goals from Eric Dier and Emmanuel Adebayor, saw the north Londoners claim all three points in comprehensive fashion, with back-to-back wins pushing them to the summit of the Premier League thanks to their superior goal difference over Chelsea and Swansea City.

But Pochettino is refusing to get carried away by his side's flying start to the new campaign and still maintains that cultivating a new style of play is his first priority.

"It's nothing. It's two games," said the former Southampton boss when asked how it felt to be top of the table. "The most important thing is to try to develop our style and philosophy and today the team showed our basis.

"For me, it's important that the team show that we play like a team, because after we have an unbelievable squad, and after we play like a team and all together, we can achieve something.”

He added: "We need to keep calm, it's only the beginning of the season. Always it is better when you win, for belief in your way and your philosophy and it is a little easier to develop your style.

"But for me, it's nothing. I was very happy after the game but now I am very quiet and calm. We need to work tomorrow, restart the training session and improve, because we need to improve a lot."

Pochettino also reserved special praise for compatriot Erik Lamela, who struggled for form and fitness last season but has collected four assists in his last two outings, against QPR and AEL.

"It's true that Lamela can improve a lot, but he's still young. Always when a a young player arrives in a new country, a new culture, it's difficult to adapt. But we all know his skills and we are very pleased for him and the whole squad."

Lewandowski: The goals will come for Bayern

Robert Lewandowski is confident he will open his Bayern Munich account soon despite a third game without a goal.

The Poland international's wait for a first competitive goal extended to 259 minutes on Friday as he was unable to beat Wolfsburg goalkeeper Max Grun at the Allianz Arena.

Grun denied the 26-year-old on numerous occasions, including an impressive save when Lewandowski only had him to beat.

Despite the striker's misses, his side got off to a winning start as Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller secured a 2-1 win and a fine start to their Bundesliga title defence.

Lewandowski, who was substituted with 11 minutes to go, expects to keep improving as he settles into life at Bayern and is sure he will be contributing goals to their cause before long.

"We won our first match and picked up our first three points," he said. "I hope the next match will be even better and of course I hope I can score.

"I think I have never scored in my first match. I had two good chances but I think I'll do better next week.

"Of course a goal would have been good for me but I'm not upset. We have three points. I have to stay calm, but I'm sure I'll score soon."

His next chance to open his account on Saturday when they visit Schalke in the Bundesliga.

:cool:Alonso bids farewell to Manchester United-bound Di Maria

    412067_heroa.jpg

Xabi Alonso has bid farewell to Real Madrid team-mate Angel Di Maria, who is on the verge of joining Manchester United.

Di Maria has yet to complete his reported €70 million transfer to Old Trafford but he has already said his goodbyes to his Blancos colleagues.

Xabi Alonso has now taken to Twitter to express his gratitude to Di Maria for the role he played in Madrid's 4-1 Champions League final triumph over city rivals Atletico in May.

"Thanks for everything, Fideo," the former Liverpool midfielder wrote. "I wish you the best - even at Man. Utd.

"I will never forget the extra-time zig-zag [run] in Lisbon."

Di Maria was linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu last summer, following the arrivals of Gareth Bale and Isco from Tottenham and Malaga, respectively.

However, the Argentina international stayed in the Spanish capital and proved Madrid's key player in their historic win over Atletico, slaloming his way into the area before unleashing a shot that Thibaut Courtois could only palm into the path of Bale, who headed home to put Los Blancos 2-1 up in extra-time.

Van Gaal: I like Di Maria as much as Messi & Vidal

    446794_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal refused to confirm the club's move for Angel Di Maria, but admitted he classes the Argentine among the best players in the world.

Goal understands that the Red Devils are nearing a deal for the Real Madrid winger, with Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti having revealed that the 26-year-old has already said goodbye to his team-mates at Santiago Bernabeu.

Van Gaal has now revealed he would like to sign Di Maria as much as he would like to see Lionel Messi and Arturo Vidal arrive at Old Trafford - but refused to comment on whether the transfer was close to completion.

"I think always the club has to announce it," the Dutchman told Sky Sports. "When we think it is the right time then we will come to you. At this time we cannot say anything.

"Yes, [I like Di Maria]. But I like Messi also and Vidal also. There are a lot of players who I like. But they cannot always come to Manchester United."

The former Netherlands coach was speaking after his side's 1-1 draw against Sunderland and he believes his team is lacking a creative spark.

Juan Mata gave the Red Devils the lead before Jack Rodwell's header levelled matters, leaving the 20-time English champions without a win from their opening two Premier League matches of the season.

"I think that in the first half we played an equal match with Sunderland," Van Gaal stated. "We didn’t create so much.

"But we have already warned our players about giving set pieces away, and then they go and score from a set piece. That’s disappointing.

"In the second half we played much better but in the final third we lacked the creative pass.

"Last week [against Swansea City] we created more chances. Football has been played for creating chances.

"I have to say probably we had more ball possession and were more dominant than the last match. But you have to win your game and we couldn’t."

Manchester United will finish in the top four - Poyet

    402804_heroa.jpg

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet still believes Manchester United will finish in the top four - despite a lacklustre showing in Sunday's 1-1 draw between the two sides.

A week after losing 2-1 at home to Swansea, the Red Devils once again underwhelmed under new boss Louis van Gaal at the Stadium of Light.

United began the game on the back foot and Juan Mata's 17th-minute goal handed the visitors a scarcely deserved lead, which was justly wiped out by Jack Rodwell before the interval.

Yet Poyet believes Van Gaal will ultimately find the right formula and spark a turnaround.

Asked if he still thought United would finish in the top four, the Uruguayan said: "Yes, because [Marcos] Rojo [who missed out against Sunderland as he has not yet received a work permit] has been added and they will still spend more money.

"I know Van Gaal very well and if you give him time he will achieve what he promises. I have no doubt."

While the result was a great source of frustration for Van Gaal, Poyet declared himself pleased with a point.

Chief among the positives was the performance of new boy Will Buckley, who caused United plenty of problems on his home debut.

He added: "I am so pleased he had a very good first half because everybody knows why I was so consistent in trying to get him.

"He was electric, direct and he will do plenty of things. We have to be patient with him but he showed why he is here."

Barcelona 3-0 Elche: Messi at the double for 10-man Blaugrana

    448416_heroa.jpg

Luis Enrique's reign as Barcelona coach began in style as Lionel Messi inspired the 10-man Catalans to a 3-0 hammering of Elche at Camp Nou.

The former Roma and Celta Vigo coach returned during the close-season to the club where he spent eight years as a player and watched on as Messi netted twice in a rousing display on Sunday.

Recent signings Claudio Bravo, Jeremy Mathieu and Ivan Rakitic lined up alongside youngsters Munir El Haddadi and Rafinha in a new-look starting XI as Barca look to atone for a poor campaign last time out.

But the opening goal could not have been more familiar as Messi produced a fine finish after turning brilliantly on the edge of the box.

A straight red card for Javier Mascherano at the end of the first half appeared to give Elche hope, but 18-year-old debutant Munir remedied the situation with a delightful strike right after the break.

Messi put the game beyond Elche just after the hour mark with an equally impressive finish and ensured that the new era at Barca started encouragingly.

Luis Enrique claimed in the build-up that no other side can match his charges for determination, but bar a brief pause for a pitch-invading cat, Elche kept the hosts at bay with some resolute defending in the early stages.

Elche's defensive blockade frustrated Barca - without the services of the suspended Luis Suarez - at the beginning, Andres Iniesta finally carving them open in the 22nd minute as Munir went close.

The youngster produced a fine first touch to spin away from David Lomban after receiving Iniesta's throughball, but his powerful effort came back off the left-hand post.

Iniesta was integral again 10 minutes later as he fired a 30-yard warning shot against the crossbar.

Elche's resolve eventually broke in the 42nd minute, though, as Messi darted away from a crowd of defenders before firing a precise finish into the bottom-right corner.

However, the away side received a significant boost almost immediately as Mascherano tripped Garry Rodrigues when through on goal, earning the Argentinian a red.

Rafinha's league debut for the club ended at half-time as Luis Enrique sacrificed the attacker in favour of Marc Bartra.

The defensive switch had no negative impact on Barca going forward, though, as Munir doubled the hosts' advantage less than a minute into the half.

The teenager latched on to Rakitic's deflected aerial pass and produced a deft flick with the outside of his left foot, beating Przemyslaw Tyton from 16 yards with remarkable confidence.

Elche's attacking threat had been virtually non-existent and the match was put completely beyond them with 27 minutes to go.

Messi jinked past a couple of challenges on the edge of the box and expertly placed a pin-point effort into the bottom-left corner.

The Argentina star looked hungry to complete his hat-trick in the final stages, but the game ultimately petered out and Barca settled for a routine triumph.

Nantes 0-1 Monaco: Falcao makes hosts pay the penalty

    447550_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao scored the only goal of the game as Monaco claimed their first win of the new Ligue 1 season by beating Nantes 1-0 on Sunday.

The Colombia international, back in the starting line-up after his recent return to full fitness following a knee injury, headed home just before the break and Leonardo Jardim's men held on by the skin of their teeth to leave their hosts counting the cost of Serge Gakpe's 23rd-minute penalty miss.

Monaco arrived in Nantes still reeling from the shock of losing their first two games of the new Ligue 1 season but they did not look short on confidence in the early exchanges, dominating possession and forcing a succession of corners in the opening quarter.

By complete contrast, Nantes struggled to string more than a couple of passes together and Yacine Bammou cut an isolated and frustrated figure up front.

However, the striker made his presence felt 23 minutes in when he escaped the attention of Andrea Raggi before being felled in the area by Subasic.

The Monaco goalkeeper was only booked for his indiscretion and that proved crucial, because he brilliantly saved Gakpe's subsequent spot-kick before Monaco eventually managed to scramble the ball to safety after a game of pinball in the six-yard box.

It proved a costly miss for Nantes, who fell behind just before the break when the lively Layvin Kurzawa whipped over a wonderful left-wing cross that Falcao headed home emphatically at the back post - despite the best efforts of Maxime Dupe, who got a hand on the ball.

Monaco could have doubled their lead in the early stages of the second half but Dupe proved equal to Lucas Ocampos' well-struck shot from the edge of the area.

Nantes dominated thereafter, though, initially failing to create any clear-cut openings before piling on the pressure in the closing stages, with Bammou dragging a half-volley just wide of Subasic's goal before Kian Hansen crashed a header against the crossbar with just five minutes remaining.

The hosts kept coming in injury time but Subasic, rather fittingly, had the final say, palming Itay Shechter's downward header up and over the crossbar to earn his side - and his coach - three much-needed points.

Jermaine Jones joins New England Revolution

    406648_heroa.jpg

United States international Jermaine Jones has joined New England Revolution.

The 32-year-old midfielder had been a free agent, having parted company with Besiktas at the end of last season, and admitted during this summer's World Cup that he had his heart set on a move to Major League Soccer.

Chicago Fire had also been hoping to sign Jones but the Revs have won out in a blind draw.

"As a designated player of a certain threshold, Jones was not subject to allocation ranking for dispersal to an MLS team," the New England outfit explained in a club statement on Sunday.

"The Revolution and Chicago Fire expressed an interest in Jones, and had the available salary budget and a designated player slot to accommodate him.

"However, following a blind draw between the two clubs, Jones was assigned to the Revolution."

Goal USA understands that the Revs will pay Jones a €3.4 million combined salary for the remainder of 2014, and all of 2015, with the option of a third season.

The Revs are currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the New York Red Bulls for the final playoff spot in the East.

Rakitic: It's easy playing with the best players in the world

    448449_heroa.jpg

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic refused to accept any praise for his fine performance in Sunday's Liga win over Elche, arguing that it's easy lining up alongside "the best players in the world".

The Croatia international, who joined the Blaugrana from Sevilla earlier this summer, was selected ahead of Camp Nou icon Xavi and enjoyed a fine debut, setting up Munir El Haddadi for the Catalans' second goal in a 3-0 victory.

However, Rakitic was keen to play down his role in a win that came in spite of Javier Mascherano's first-half dismissal - given that Lionel Messi had stolen the show with his two-goal salvo.

"My role is to work and give the best of myself to get the team wins and titles," the 26-year-old told reporters after the game. "But playing with the best players in the world makes everything easier.

"It was not an easy match, though. The first game is always difficult and even more so if you have to play the entire second half with 10.

"But we have confidence in our football and, despite the difficulties, it finally paid off for us.

    "Today has been very good."

Rakitic was also full of praise for fellow debutant Munir, who latched onto the Croat's deflected through ball before coolly flicking the ball home.

"He is a very talented player and should continue to work with the same enthusiasm so that the coach will continue to rely on him in the coming games," the former Schalke man stated.

Arsenal & Liverpool tracking Preston North End's Brownhill

    448404_heroa.jpg

Arsenal and Liverpool are among the clubs willing to battle it out for Preston North End starlet Josh Brownhill.

The former Manchester United trainee caught the eye in League One in 2013-14 and enjoyed a fine pre-season ahead of the current campaign.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton and West Brom have all deployed scouts to monitor the 18-year-old's progress.

Rated as one of the finest prospects in League One, it is thought that Championship outfits Fulham, Bournemouth and Huddersfield are also keen.

Preston face an uphill task to hang on to their prized asset, although there is the possibility he could be loaned back to Deepdale immediately following any sale.

Falcao: I hope to stay at Monaco

    448427_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao has dismissed rumours linking him with a move away from Monaco, insisting that he wants to stay at the Stade Louis II.

The Colombia international only joined the Ligue 1 outfit from Atletico Madrid last year but it has been reported that he is desperate to leave the principality before the close of this summer's transfer window.

Juventus and AC Milan are among those said to be interested in signing the striker on loan for the 2014-15 campaign but Falcao claims he has no desire to depart Monaco.

"I'm happy here and I hope to stay," the 28-year-old told Canal+ after scoring the only goal in his club's 1-0 win over Ligue 1 rivals Nantes on Sunday night.

Falcao's appearance at the Stade de la Beaujoire represented the forward's first start for Monaco since suffering knee ligament damage in January.

Luis Enrique: Messi the best in the world - even when defending

    448401_heroa.jpg

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique says that Lionel Messi is the best player in the world - even when defending.

The 44-year-old coach took charge of the Blaugrana for the first time in La Liga on Sunday night and, despite the dismissal of Javier Mascherano just before the break, Camp Nou was treated to a Messi masterclass.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner scored two fine goals during a 3-0 win over Elche but Luis Enrique was more taken with the Argentine's all-round excellence.

"Messi is the best in the world, even when he is defending," the Barca boss told reporters after the game.

""We see him day in, day out doing unbelievable things. He'll be the best in the world as long as he wants to give assists, score goals, press ...

"He has been touched by the magic wand for many years now."

Luis Enrique also lavished praised on 18-year-old debutant Munir El Haddadi, who only broke into the club's B team earlier this year.

"Munir is tearing through the levels at a terrifying rate," the Blaugrana coach enthused. "He gives us options, he scores goals and he's competitive."

Munir: It's an honour to play with Messi

Barcelona youngster Munir El Haddadi says that he is honoured to play alongside Lionel Messi after marking his debut with a goal.

The Catalans got their season off to a flier as they beat Elche 3-0 at Camp Nou, despite Javier Mascherano's red card late in the first half.

The 18-year-old has spoken of his pride at starting his career in such fashion and hailed the entire team's performance.

Galliani: Balotelli exit in everyone's best interests

    439923_heroa.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani believes that Mario Balotelli's imminent transfer to Liverpool is in everyone's best interests.

The Rossoneri have agreed a €20 million fee with the Reds for the Italy international, who is expected to complete his proposed move to Anfield on Monday or Tuesday.

Milan boss Pippo Inzaghi has already stated that while the San Siro side are losing "a great player", the sale of a player notorious for misbehaviour on and off the field will have a positive affect on "team spirit".

Galliani has now conceded a matter of weeks after saying that Balotelli was "99 per cent certain" to be staying at Milan, that it was the right move for all three parties.

"It was a decision made in the interests of the player, Milan and Liverpool," the Rossoneri vice-president told Milannews.

Milan are now being linked with a plethora of potential replacements, including Roma's Mattia Destro and Porto's Jackson Martinez, and while Galliani refused to be drawn on his transfer targets, he did admit that he has been talking strikers with Inzaghi on Sunday.

"A centre forward? Yes, it's the priority," he confessed. "We're looking for a replacement for Balotelli."

Milan kick off their Serie A campaign with a home game against Lazio on August 31.
