AC Milan pay tribute to 'memorable moments' with Balotelli

    399996_heroa.jpg

AC Milan have thanked Mario Balotelli for his "memorable moments" in a Rossoneri shirt after the striker completed his move to Liverpool.

Balotelli sealed a transfer to the Reds in a deal believed to be worth €20 million on Monday, just 18 months after leaving England for the San Siro.

Despite the 24-year-old's often inconsistent displays and controversial off-the-field behaviour, Milan have thanked the striker for his efforts during his brief return spell in Italy and wished him well for the future.

"We worked well together, Mario. We've been happy to have had you here and for this we say goodbye and thank you," a statement released on Milan's official website read.

"In one year and a half you've achieved a lot. You were decisive in our qualification for the Champions League in 2013 and were our top-scorer last season. This is what your Milan thinks of you and this is our chance to confirm it publicly.

"There have been lots of memorable moments: the goal-scoring debut versus Udinese, that late winner versus Torino at the San Siro in May last year, the decisive goal against Siena and the screamer against Bologna on Valentine's Day at the San Siro.

"Thank-you for everything and for what you have done at the club. We wish you the very best of luck for your next sporting and professional adventure."

Official: Liverpool sign Balotelli from AC Milan

    447175_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have completed the signing of AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli, the Premier League club have confirmed.

The deal for the Italian, who scored 18 goals in all competitions last season, will cost around €20 million, with Balotelli flying in to complete a medical on Friday before putting pen to paper on a long-term deal at Anfield.

Balotelli signed for boyhood club Milan in January 2013 after three often tumultuous years at Manchester City, but has been unhappy at San Siro for several months while club owner Silvio Berlusconi was keen to move him on.

    Bv5WG5xCUAAWWfb.jpg

The 24-year-old clashed with former City boss Roberto Mancini in training during his time in Manchester, and was never far from the headlines after setting off fireworks in his apartment.

In the wake of that incident, Balotelli lifted his jersey to reveal the now famous "Why Always Me?" message after scoring against in the landmark 6-1 victory against Manchester United in 2011.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had been scouring Europe for a replacement for Luis Suarez all summer, and was continually linked with a move for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao.

The Northern Irishman had in fact completely ruled out Balotelli's arrival earlier this summer: "I can categorically tell you that he will not be coming to Liverpool. He is a wonderful player, but he is an AC Milan player."

Balotelli scored 20 Premier League goals in his 54 appearances in England, and 26 in 43 Serie A matches since moving back to Italy with the Rossoneri.

Balotelli: I want to lead Liverpool to Champions League glory

    448614_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli has set his sights on winning the Champions League after completing his €20 million move from AC Milan to Liverpool.

The Italy striker has won the competition once before with Inter and hopes to bring that experience to Anfield as the Reds prepare for a return to European football's top table.

"I always start a competition wanting to win it," Balotelli told Liverpool's official website.

"We will see. I want to win another Champions League for sure, because the Champions League [with Inter] wasn't all mine, I was in a team. I want to take this team to the Champions League."

Balotelli revealed that he regrets his decision to leave English football after two-and-a-half seasons with Manchester City to return to San Siro and Serie A.

"I'm happy to be back because I left England and it was a mistake," the 24-year-old admitted. "I wanted to go to Italy but I realised it was a mistake.

"English football is generally better. English football is beautiful."

Balotelli was sent off at Anfield in November 2011 while playing for City and joked that he is pleased to now have the opportunity to be the hero, rather than the enemy, of the Liverpool supporters.

"I didn't expect [the positive reception] because I've always been playing against Liverpool," he explained. "Whenever I played against Liverpool, the fans weren't nice with me but that's normal - it's football!

"Now that I play for Liverpool, I can see the expectation in people. They're very happy and that makes me very happy at the same time.

"No [I didn't enjoy playing at Anfield for City] - but when I play with this team, it's going to be nice for sure. To play here for Liverpool excites me, but if you're an opponent it's difficult."

He added: "Liverpool are one of the best teams here in England. The football is very good here. It's a great team with young players, and that's why I came here."

'Unbelievable' Cech is fighting for his place - Terry

    448618_heroa.jpg

Chelsea captain John Terry has praised Petr Cech's response to being replaced as first-choice goalkeeper by Thibaut Courtois.

Cech had enjoyed a decade of unrivalled success in Chelsea's goal after arriving from Rennes in 2004.

However, manager Jose Mourinho has opted to put 22-year-old Courtois in for Chelsea's first two league games of the season, explaining the decision was for the good of the club's future.

Cech has instantly been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, and Terry concedes the Czech Republic international has an important decision to make with just a week of the transfer window remaining.

Terry said: "It is very hard to take for big Petr but he is Chelsea through and through and has been unbelievable in the way he has responded in training and in his attitude.

"Some players throw their toys out of the pram and Petr 100 per cent has not done that. He is fighting for his place.

"How long can he fight for his place? I don't know that.

"That is a decision for him and the club to decide but we have got two of the best keepers in the world.

"Petr has done it for many years and if Thibaut can replicate that, it will take some doing."

Rodgers: We'll finally get the best out of Mario

    445802_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers has vowed to get the best out of Mario Balotelli following the striker's €20 million move to Liverpool.

The Italy international has had promising spells at major European clubs blighted by behavioural problems both on and off the field.

But Rodgers is sure that there is the right set up in place on Merseyside to allow Balotelli to reach his full potential.

"I believe we have the infrastructure, culture and environment to get the best out of him and help him achieve his true potential. We are a strong group here, committed to hard work and he will benefit from being around it," Rodgers told Liverpool's official website.

"I am looking forward to working with him and helping him learn more, improve and progress as a player. I'm sure the supporters will make him feel very welcome."

Liverpool have been trying to replace Luis Suarez this summer, after the Uruguayan left for Barcelona following his best ever season at the club.

But Rodgers is confident that in Balotelli, the club now have a player capable of producing yet more world-class displays.

"This transfer represents outstanding value for the club and I think we have done a really smart piece of business here," he said.

"There is no doubting Mario's ability; he is a world-class talent and someone who, for such a young age, has vast experience of playing at the very highest level."

"He has scored goals in the Barclays Premier League, in Italy, in the Champions League and for his country at international level."

    Simeone slapped with eight-game ban

    447700_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has been hit with a total ban of eight matches following his conduct during the Supercopa de Espana clash with Real Madrid.

Simeone was sent from the dugout in the first half of the second leg at the Vicente Calderon on Friday after arguing with the officials on the touchline. He then patted the fourth official on the head and sarcastically applauded the referee before heading to the stands.

The Argentine said earlier that he was willing to "pay the price" for his indiscretion, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has now deemed fit to punish him for four separate acts of misconduct, totalling an eight-match ban from the touchline.

In an official statement, the RFEF confirmed that Simeone has received a two-game ban for excessive protests over a decision, a four-game ban for striking the fourth official and two additional one-game suspensions for applauding the referee before continuing to remonstrate from the stands.

Simeone has also been hit with a fine totalling €4,805 for the incidents, while Atletico have also been issued a financial punishment. The 44-year-old has a total of 10 days in which to appeal against the sanction.

The RFEF have determined Simeone must serve the most severe punishment - the four-game ban for striking an official - during La Liga matches, meaning he will miss the games against Rayo Vallecano, Eibar, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo. The remaining suspension will be served in Supercopa clashes.

Medel: I rejected other offers in favour of Inter

    445591_heroa.jpg

Gary Medel says he rejected interest from other clubs in favour of joining Inter from Cardiff City earlier this month.

The Chile international, who made four appearances for his country at the World Cup, arrived at San Siro from south Wales on a four-year contract following his former club's relegation from the Premier League.

And during his presentation on Monday, Medel is in no doubt a move to Milan was the right choice.

"I am very happy to be at Inter," he said. "I spoke to [Genoa's Mauricio] Pinilla, who told me Inter are a big club.

"I'd like to thank everyone that brought me here, my team-mates have given me a warm welcome.

"There were other teams in for me, but I always wanted a move to Inter and I'm here at last. I'm ready to play."

Medel was compared by the Italian media to former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, but the 27-year-old maintains he is very much in his own mould as a player.

"I'm Gary Medel and I want to show what I can do, perform well and win here at Inter," he added.

"I've already talked to Mazzarri, but what was said will remain between us."

Inter kick off their Serie A campaign at Torino on Sunday, but must first defend a 3-0 lead in the second leg of their Europa League play-off against Stjarnan on Thursday.

Iturraspe: Bayern Munich interest is just rumour

    448078_heroa.jpg

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Iturraspe insists talk of a possible move to Bayern Munich is simply rumour at this stage.

Reports have emerged in Spain that Pep Guardiola is considering a move for the 25-year-old after the long-term knee injury suffered by Javi Martinez, as well as the persistent fitness problems affecting Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thiago Alcantara.

Iturraspe, however, says is only interested in the second leg of the Champions League playoff against Napoli on Wednesday.

"Now the rumours are coming out, but I'm just thinking of taking the opportunity here that, a few years ago, I never thought of," he told reporters.

"It's a game of great expectation, we have to fight to the death and show that the result is a good one.

"They're going to play well. Their game is based on counterattacks. We know we have to be on the offensive, to control the game and create chances."

Athletic take a 1-1 draw back to the San Mames this week and Iturraspe believes the revamped stadium deserves the chance to stage Europe's greatest games.

"The stadium remains spectacular. We're looking forward to seeing if we can give it Champions League football," he said.

Tottenham will pay Fazio's release clause - Sevilla

    448605_heroa.jpg

Sevilla have confirmed that Tottenham are closing in on a move for defender Federico Fazio.

Mauricio Pochettino has been looking for a new centre-back since arriving at White Hart Lane, with a move for Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio falling through earlier this month.

The former Southampton boss is set on stamping his mark on the team, with Michael Dawson set to move on to Hull City, and it appears he may now finally have his brand new defender.

Sevilla manager Unai Emery had resigned himself to losing the player last week and the Spanish club's sporting director Monchi says that they have tried to keep hold of Fazio - but he seems destined for a move to north London.

"It seems that Tottenham is willing to pay the [release] clause," Monchi told reporters.

"We are waiting to see the money in the Football League. We are not going to negotiate with anyone because our desire is to keep Fazio in Sevilla.

"Two months ago we talked about his renewal, but it was not possible. When an English team appears interested in one of our players it is difficult because they can multiply player salaries

"We tried to renew him since last season but the distances were huge even if we were hoping to make a new deal."

Fazio is the second defender Sevilla have lost to a Premier League side this summer, with Alberto Moreno leaving for Liverpool after their Uefa Super Cup defeat at the hands of Real Madrid.

David Luiz: I wouldn't have been happy at Barcelona

    445637_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz claims he would have been as happy had he joined Barcelona instead of the French champions.

The Brazil international moved to Parc des Prince from Chelsea this summer as the Spanish giants began pursuing a number of high-profile defensive targets.

While a potential move to Camp Nou never materialised, with Barca focusing their efforts on the signing of Luis Suarez before later turning to centre-backs Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen, the 27-year-old claims he will enjoy his football far more in Paris than he would in Catalunya or in Germany.

"I'm sure I'll be happier here in Paris than if I had moved to Barcelona or Munich," Luiz told Telefoot.

"I really believe PSG is the club of the future, that's why I'm happy to be here and I think I'll stay here for many years."

Luiz admitted he was persuaded to join PSG after talks with coach Laurent Blanc and Brazil team-mate Thiago Silva, and claims the whole club is fully focused on winning the Champions League.

"I talked a lot with Thiago Silva and the coach, Laurent Blanc," said the former Benfica man. "My decision was easy. PSG were made for me.

"The great objective is the Champions League. It's the dream here."

De Guzman: I couldn't turn down Napoli and Benitez

    446840_heroa.jpg

Jonathan de Guzman revealed that the chance to play for Rafael Benitez was a major factor in his decision to sign for Napoli.

The Netherlands midfielder, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Swansea City in the Premier League, arrived in Naples from Villarreal last week.

And Canada-born De Guzman says the offer from Napoli would have been difficult to turn down.

"Benitez is a great coach in the game, he has coached great clubs and of course Napoli is no exception," he said at his unveiling. "Certainly his presence here has influenced my decision to choose Napoli, whilst he also knows how to play well.

"With him I can learn so much.

"I thought that this is the right decision. I can learn so much here. Napoli is a great place, and for me this is an honour.

"Napoli are a great club with a great history, here I have the chance to play in the Champions League and I hope to do that.

"Italian football fascinates me, Napoli have been at the top in recent years. I have played in Holland, Spain and England, I wanted a new experience."

De Guzman is eager to help Napoli's fight for the Scudetto this season but says qualifying for the Champions League group stage is the club's immediate priority.

"Our targets? We aim to do well in all competitions, whilst the ambition is to play in the Champions League.

"Napoli can finish top of the table, I would like to provide my contribution. I hope to be a part of this team for a long time.

"The Scudetto and the rivalry with Juventus? The league is important, whilst since I have arrived I have heard a lot about the rivalry with the Bianconeri.

"Now, though, we are thinking of progressing further in the Champions League."

Napoli visit Athletic Bilbao in the second leg of their Champions League play-off on Wednesday after drawing 1-1 at Stadio San Paolo.

Angel di Maria arrives in Manchester ahead of British record transfer

    Real-Madrid-v-Barcelona-Copa-del-Rey-final-An_3125835.jpg

Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria has arrived in Manchester to finalise his British record £63.9m move to Manchester United.Di Maria arrived at United's Carrington training ground on Monday night ahead of a medical and the completion of the formalities of a transfer which will make him the fourth most expensive player in football history. The fee agreed between the two clubs for the Argentine international eclipses the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool for striker Fernando Torres three years ago.

    1408998407894_wps_1_Pic_Paul_Cousans_Zenpix_L.jpg

In his post-match interview after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Super Sunday, manager Louis van Gaal declined to comment on speculation that Di Maria’s signing was imminent.“The club has to announce it,” he told Sky Sports. “When we are thinking it is the right time for a transfer, then we come to you and say ‘OK, we have that player or the other player’. But at this time we cannot say anything.”

When asked if Di Maria is a player he would like to sign, Van Gaal confirmed he is but added: “I like Messi also and I like Vidal also so we have a lot of players in this world that I like but they cannot come always to Manchester United.”Former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports football pundit Gary Neville told Sky Sports after United’s draw with Sunderland that he felt Di Maria was a good fit for Van Gaal’s side.“It’s good business,” he said. “United have lost their negotiation strength but they just need to get the right players. This one is.

    1408999301877_wps_10_Pic_Paul_Cousans_Zenpix_L.jpg

"He'll get pace into the game and get from box to box. He’s the right signing. You could argue they need other players in other areas but they definitely need a wide player.”Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Sunday the player had come to the club’s training base to bid farewell to his team-mates and the club’s staff."Di Maria has not trained with us and he came in to say goodbye to the players and people at the club," Ancelotti said."The decision is his and the club has done what it could to keep him here but he thought differently and so good luck to him.

“I am very happy with the work that he has done for Madrid but we have the chance to replace him well."We are thankful for what he has done at this club. There is nothing official yet but it is being sorted out.”Football agent James Featherstone told Sky Sports News HQ on Monday that he expects more players to follow Di Maria to Old Trafford.

“I think they’ll certainly be looking to add to the squad,” he said.“It’s out there in the public domain that Louis van Gaal’s had some time with the squad now and he’ll look to add and complement the squad where he thinks appropriate.“It’s a difficult time to add and obviously for Manchester United it’s been played out publicly for the last 12/24 months about their squad, so I’m sure they’ll be very patient they’ll only do it if the situation is correct to bring in players of the right quality for Manchester United.”

'Comfortable' Liga debut for Real Madrid's Kroos

    446787_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid may have struggled in their first Liga outing of the new season, but new signing Toni Kroos says he felt "very comfortable" in the 3-0 win over Cordoba on Monday night.

The Germany international joined the European champions from Bayern Munich for a reported €25 million transfer fee earlier this summer and started in midfielder alongside Luka Modric in his new club's Primera Division opener at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid toiled for long stretches of the game but Kroos showed signs of developing a good understanding with his Croatian colleague and also ended with an assist to his name, having whipped over the corner from which Karim Benzema opened the scoring.

However, the 24-year-old was reluctant to accept any praise for an encouraging display on his Liga debut, revealing that his focus has already switched to next weekend's tricky trip to San Sebastian to take on Real Sociedad.

"I felt very comfortable on the pitch," Kroos told reporters. "This victory is important. The first match of the league is always tough and we managed to win.

"We’ve had a series of very intense matches. Now we have a week to prepare for the next one. The visit to Real Sociedad will be difficult but we will go all out for victory at the Anoeta."
