Conte leaves Balotelli out of first Italy squad

    446495_heroa.jpg

Antonio Conte has announced his first squad since taking over as coach of Italy and has left Mario Balotelli out.

The three-time Scudetto winning coach with Juventus was appointed as coach of the national team earlier this month, replacing Cesare Prandelli who resigned immediately after the loss to Uruguay which saw the Azzurri eliminated from the World Cup.

Conte has announced the squad for his first games in charge as they prepare to meet Netherlands in a friendly on September 4 before they begin their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with Norway five days later.

The biggest surprise in the squad is the absence of Balotelli, however, that could be explained by the new Liverpool striker's suspension from the Norway tie.

Mainstays Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Daniele De Rossi and Claudio Marchisio are all in the team, while Ciro Immobile, Simone Zaza and Sebastian Giovinco are also included.

    Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Daniele Padelli (Torino), Mattia Perin (Genoa), Salvatore Sirigu (Paris Saint Germain);

    Defenders: Davide Astori (Roma), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Gabriel Paletta (Parma), Andrea Ranocchia (Inter);

    Midfielders: Antonio Candreva (Lazio), Matteo Darmian (Torino), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Mattia De Sciglio (Milan), Alessandro Florenzi (Roma), Emanuele Giaccherini (Sunderland), Christian Maggio (Napoli), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Marco Parolo (Lazio), Manuel Pasqual (Fiorentina), Andrea Poli (Milan), Marco Verratti (Paris Saint Germain);

Attackers: Mattia Destro (Roma), Stephan El Shaarawy (Milan), Sebastian Giovinco (Juventus), Ciro Immobile (Borussia Dortmund), Pablo Osvaldo (Inter), Simone Zaza (Sassuolo)

Manchester City should have had a penalty - Pellegrini

    445371_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini felt Manchester City were denied a clear penalty in their first Premier League loss of the season against Stoke City.

The Potters claimed a surprise 1-0 triumph at the Etihad Stadium thanks to a wonderful solo effort from Mame Biram Diouf, the Senegal international netting his first league goal since joining from Hannover.

City dominated possession for long periods but could not find a way through the Stoke defence, although they did have a big appeal for a penalty turned down by referee Lee Mason after Erik Pieters appeared to trip Yaya Toure up in the box.

Pellegrini believes his side should have been awarded a spot-kick following that incident, however, the 60-year-old pointed to City's failure to create chances as the primary reason for defeat.

"It doesn't matter, all of you know that it was a clear penalty but it doesn't matter. I don't want to analyse the game just in one play," Pellegrini said to reporters.

"We tried to create space, Stoke defended very well in the first half and in the second also.

"We couldn't create space but I think in the attitude we did all that we could do.

"We didn't play well in the creative way, it was too easy in the way they scored the goal in counter-attacking a corner in their own box, he [Diouf] ran 70 metres to score the goal."

Despite the loss, Pellegrini is refusing to panic and insists City will continue to play in the same free-flowing style that saw them emerge as Premier League champions last term.

"It's always serious to lose three points here at home, it's important for our team to try to win the nine points before the international break," he added.

"It's not good to start this international break with a defeat but this game always happens once a year, we [will be] working in the same way we are doing."

    Atletico must improve - Simeone

    447762_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone says his Atletico Madrid team must improve in the coming weeks if they are to remain competitive in La Liga.

The reigning Spanish champions picked up their first league win of the season when they ground to a 2-1 victory over Eibar.

Despite taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, the Basque club fought hard to get back into the game and, after pulling a goal back, came close to pulling level.

And Simeone has admitted his side need to improve on their opening two performances, but stressed the new signings are still getting used to their new surroundings.

"We have to improve and work hard. That is what we enjoy the most. Winning is a positive, and from there we hope that it will bear fruit.

"The characteristics of the players who have come in are not the same as those who left. We are working hard with the new players so that they adapt.

"All of the early matches [this season] have shown that nobody has been better than the rest. All of the results have been close. We started off very well, but later we weren't able to get comfortable.

"The anxiety to get the points played on us more than our own enthusiasm."

When asked if he would bring in new signigns before the close of the transfer window, the Argentine coach said he would discuss it with the club's hierarchy.

"We'll talk about that with the board. There is still time. We'll see if there are more comings and goings.

Diego Costa has everything - Terry

    450528_heroa.jpg

John Terry has hailed Diego Costa's impact after the forward struck twice in Chelsea's stunning 6-3 win at Everton.

The Spain international opened the scoring after just 35 seconds at Goodison Park and added his second late on in one of the most remarkable games in the Premier League's recent history.

And Terry singled out the former Atletico Madrid man's talents as he took his tally for the season to four, with Chelsea continuing their 100 per cent start to the campaign.

"He's been brilliant," Terry told Sky Sports . "I played against him in the Champions League and realised he was a top player, but when you see him every day you realise he's literally got everything.

"He's got off to a flying start and long may it continue, because that was the difference today."

Jose Mourinho's side sit top of the table after three wins from three games and Terry is already eyeing the club's first Premier League title since 2009-10.

"I think the belief has been there from day one," he added. "Didier [Drogba] spoke before the game and said 'It's been too long since we won the league', that's obviously our aim.

"We've started very well. It was important today as well as the boys go away on international break. It's a couple of weeks now until our next game so it's vital we got the win."

    Mourinho confirms Remy interest

    392231_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Chelsea's interest in QPR striker Loic Remy and has no fears over the Frenchman's fitness.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp revealed on Saturday that Remy, left out of the squad for the 1-0 win over Sunderland, was heading for the Loftus Road exit door, suggesting that Chelsea was his likely destination.

And, following the Blues' stunning 6-3 Premier League triumph at Everton later the same day, Mourinho explained that the club's pursuit of Remy had been stepped up after Fernando Torres' departure for AC Milan.

"Today I told my people in the club that I have no news until the end of the game," the Portuguese told Sky Sports. "They know I don't like to communicate before the game.

"Obviously I know that we are trying since yesterday, since we knew that [Torres] was leaving, that we were trying to get Remy.

"But now, when I arrive in the bus is the time to make some calls and to have news."

Remy looked set to move to Liverpool last month before the deal collapsed after he reportedly failed a medical. However, Mourinho is not concerned with the former Marseille forward's fitness.

He said: "I have one fantastic doctor, we trust him completely, he has lots of people working with him in different areas.

"For sure they will try to identify what the situation is. But the information we have already from specialists in different areas is that he doesn't have a problem to play football."

Remy's signing would add further firepower to a Chelsea squad that already boasts the English top-flight's top scorer, with Diego Costa having netted twice on Merseyside to make it four in three games for the Spain international.

    Guardiola: We lost control

    445855_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola insists his side will soon rediscover their ruthless streak, after being held to a 1-1 draw at Schalke.

Adopting an unfamiliar 3-4-3 system, Bayern lacked a clinical edge against Jens Keller's side, despite enjoying a dominant start.

The champions secured a 10th-minute through Robert Lewandowski but the hosts responded just after the hour when debutant Xabi Alonso's clearance inside the six-yard box cannoned back off Benedikt Howedes and into the net. Replays suggested that the ball may have come off the arm of the German left-back, but Guardiola was more concerned with how his side had failed to build on their impressive start at the Veltins Arena.

He said: "The first 25 or 30 minutes were our best in the last six months. After that we no longer controlled possession, so we no longer had a grip on the game. But we ran hard so it was good training and a good test for our legs."The result will be seen as an early chance missed for Bayern, who head into the international break two points behind early Bundesliga pacesetters Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bavarians resume their campaign at home to struggling Stuttgart on September 13 and Guardiola hopes the prolonged break will help ease an injury list containing Rafinha, Franck Ribery, Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thiago Alcantara."We have two weeks without a game now and I hope most of our injured players can resume training," he added. One bright note was the debut of Alonso, who signed from Real Madrid earlier this week and played in a central defensive role in Gelsenkirchen.

Despite his contribution to the Schalke equaliser, the Spaniard impressed his new manager. "He will help the team a lot because he has a great quality," Guardiola said.

    Martinez: Costa must learn respect

    450598_heroa.jpg

Roberto Martinez believes Chelsea striker Diego Costa must learn to show respect for his opponents if he is to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Costa scored twice as Jose Mourinho's men ran out 6-3 winners over Everton after a frantic encounter at Goodison Park, and has now netted four times in his first three games in a Blue shirt.

But the Brazil-born Spaniard was also at the centre of controversy, being booked for an altercation with Seamus Coleman before riling Tim Howard by appearing to goad the Irishman in the seconds after his own goal put Chelsea 3-1 ahead.

After the match Mourinho suggested the Everton players had tried to get Costa sent off, but Martinez believes the 25-year-old has a lot to learn about the culture of the English game.

"I think there are certain foreign players who, when they come to the Premier League, need to understand the ethics and it's a completely different culture," Martinez told reporters.

"The last thing you want to be is disrespectful to another player even if it's in the opposing team. I'm sure he'll learn that very quickly. "The behaviour on the pitch is quite unique in the British game. There is a real professionalism in the league and a real respect.

"You can understand why the players weren't happy with [Costa's apparent goading of Coleman], in the same way he was trying to buy free kicks with the way he was playing.

"I think it's going to take a bit a time for him to understand that this league is quite different, quite unique and it needs players to adapt to it rather than the league to adapt to the players."
