Villarreal 0-1 Barcelona: Sandro snatches victory for visitors

    450938_heroa.jpg

Barcelona snatched a dramatic late victory over Villarreal on Sunday as second-half substitute Sandro scored in the final few minutes.

Barca toiled on a poor El Madrigal pitch and against a stubborn home defence until the 19-year-old came off the bench to score a scrappy 82nd-minute winner on his first La Liga appearance.

Lionel Messi, captaining Barca in the absence of Andres Iniesta, wriggled free down the right and his low cross-shot was diverted into Sandro's path by Villarreal keeper Sergio Asenjo, and the youngster stabbed home from three yards.

Asenjo had been in superb form up to that point and was perhaps unfortunate to be on the losing side, while Villarreal also hit the post twice shortly before Sandro broke the deadlock.

The win means new Barca coach Luis Enrique has six points from his two games in charge, following on from last week's 3-0 defeat of Elche, and the 44-year-old will also be buoyed by the return of Neymar, who came on as a substitute for the final half an hour.

Villarreal were without Nigeria striker Ikechukwu Uche due to injury, with Bruno coming in as they effectively played without a centre-forward, while Barca had Javier Mascherano suspended following his red card against Elche.

The hosts had to weather an early storm and Asenjo produced an acrobatic dive to get to a well-struck Pedro shot after he was fed by Messi.

However, Villarreal should have taken the lead on 22 minutes, only for defender Victor Ruiz to fail to connect properly after a wicked cross from the right found its way through to him at the back post.

Barca predictably responded and Asenjo showed great reflexes to tip a deflected Messi free kick onto the post.

Dani Alves - who received a hostile reception from the home fans after last season's racism storm - was enjoying plenty of space out wide while overlapping from the right, but Barca were frustrated in their attempts to force an opener.

Denis Cheryshev showed good pace on the break for Villarreal at the start of the second half and Barcelona survived another scare when back-tracking defender Jeremy Mathieu turned a cross onto his own post.

Normal service was soon resumed as Barca began to dominate possession again, but they were too often reduced to floating in hopeful balls from the flanks with teenage forward Munir failing to make his presence felt before making way for Neymar.

The Brazil star almost scored soon after his introduction, but just failed to force the ball home in a goalmouth scramble before then wildly firing another half-chance over.

Tomas Pina then struck the woodwork for Villarreal, before Messi burst through on the right side of the area and his stab across goal was poked home by Sandro to claim a hard-earned three points for the visitors.

Real Sociedad 4-2 Real Madrid: Zurutuza inspires sensational comeback

    451022_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid blew a two-goal lead against Real Sociedad as the home side sealed a sensational 4-2 win on Sunday.

The European champions seemed set for a comfortable night when early goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale left the hosts shell-shocked.

But Sociedad regrouped outstandingly, with goals from Inigo Martinez and Carlos Vela complementing David Zurutuza's double to secure a famous triumph.

Questions have surrounded Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid side in 2014-15 so far after an uninspiring 2-0 win over Cordoba last Monday followed their Supercopa de Espana defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Those results supported claims that the capital club have lost their balance following the departures of Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso - now this dreadful defensive showing on Sunday will only strengthen the arguments.

Initially, it did not seem those frailties would matter as the visitors, despite being without Cristiano Ronaldo, attacked with menace and created chances at will.

Madrid flew out of the blocks and took an early lead when Ramos rose to meet Toni Kroos' corner with a glancing header at the front post.

That set the tone for the rampant European champions, Ramos almost grabbing a second with a stunning free kick that rattled the crossbar.

And Madrid did double their advantage in the 11th minute as Bale brilliantly nutmegged Gorka Elustondo and slotted a cool finish into the corner.

Not content with being two up, they continued to press forward only to see Marcelo twice spurn good chances before Ramos headed just over from a James Rodriguez set-piece.

The defender was pressed into action in his own box soon after, bravely flinging himself in front of Esteban Granero's powerful, goal-bound effort.

Normal service was resumed moments later as Enaut Zubikarai produced a fine stop with his leg to deny Toni Kroos.

The catalogue of missed chances looked costly in the 35th minute, Martinez sneaking in at the back post to convert after Xabi Prieto had flicked on a perfectly-placed corner.

And the scores were level six minutes later as Zurutuza arrived late into the box to powerfully head home Alberto de la Bella's centre.

Goals did not bring a defensive improvement for Sociedad, with Ramos getting on the end of another free kick and heading agonisingly wide.

Madrid's defending was not much better, illustrated at the start of the second half when an unmarked Imanol Agirretxe saw a header just turned wide by the toe of Iker Casillas.

But the turnaround was complete in the 65th minute as Prieto and Sergio Canales played a neat one-two that ended when the former slid a lovely ball across for Zurutuza to slot home.

The verve with which Ancelotti's side attacked early on seemed a distant memory as they struggled for cutting edge.

Yet it was the issues at the other end that were most troubling, their inability to clear a set-piece proving costly when Vela followed a fine piece of chest control with a volley that arrowed into the top corner as defenders appealed for handball.

Sami Khedira, Rodriguez and Karim Benzema all missed golden opportunities thereafter as the visitors failed to find a route back into the game.

Official: Atletico Madrid set to secure Cerci signing

    416621_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid have reached a deal with Torino to sign Italy forward Alessio Cerci.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Atletico throughout the transfer window, and will put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Vicente Calderon subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms.

Cerci starred for Torino in Serie A last season, scoring 13 goals in 37 appearances to help the club to a seventh-placed finish, and that form has persuaded the Spanish champions to spend a reported €16 million on his services.

Jose Luis Perez Caminero, Atletico's sporting director, told the club's official website of his delight at securing a deal to bring Cerci to Madrid.

"It was a clear objective to strengthen out squad ahead of this season," he said.

"[Cerci] will provide us with speed [and] goals."

Cerci's form last term earned him a spot in Italy's World Cup squad, although he only made one substitute appearance in Brazil as his country were eliminated at the group stages.

The former Fiorentina and Roma man will become Atletico's eighth major signing of the transfer window as coach Diego Simeone rebuilds following the departures of the likes of Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois and Filipe Luis.

    Southampton swoop to snatch Alderweireld

    449428_heroa.jpg

Southampton are set to win the battle for Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, beating Newcastle and Sunderland to his signature, Goal understands.

The 25-year-old had looked on course for a move to the north east of England, with the Magpies emerging as favourites to land the centre-back.

But a late move for the Belgium international from Saints boss Ronald Koeman looks set to lure the defender to St Mary's Stadium.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have all been strongly linked with the former Ajax man, who is now set to seal a move to the Premier League.

Alderweireld moved to Atletico from Ajax last summer but made just 12 league appearances in the Spanish side's run to the Primera Division title.

But the 25-year-old started all four of Belgium's games at the World Cup.

Messi suffers hip injury in win over Villarreal

    450901_heroa.jpg

Barcelona's win away to Villarreal could have come at a cost with both Lionel Messi and Munir El Haddadi injured during the 1-0 victory.

Messi, who struggled with injuries for much of last season, pulled an adductor muscle in his right hip, according to a statement released by the club's medical team after the match, while Munir has bruising on his right thigh.

Both players will undergo tests on Monday, with the full extent of the injuries likely to be known by Tuesday.

Messi played the entire game at El Madrigal, while Munir played for just under an hour before being replaced.

Young forward Sandro struck the winner in the final 10 minutes of the encounter after some fine work from Messi left him with a tap-in.

The win maintains Barcelona's 100 per cent Liga record following their 3-0 win over Elche and puts pressure on title rivals Real Madrid, who suffered a 4-2 defeat against Real Sociedad later on Sunday after surrendering a two-goal lead.

West Ham hopeful of completing Richards signing

    446380_heroa.jpg

West Ham are hopeful that they can loan Micah Richards from Manchester City before the transfer deadline, Goal understands.

The Hammers have retained an interest in the 26-year-old right-back throughout the summer and are optimistic of getting their man despite rival interest from Sunderland and Fiorentina.

West Ham have been locked in negotiations with City over the past week and were previously informed that the Premier League champions would rather sell Richards than loan him out, having already signed Bacary Sagna to compete with Pablo Zabaleta this summer.

Yet no permanent deal has been forthcoming and the east Londoners are hopeful that they can strike a deal ahead of Monday's 23.00BST deadline as they seek to bolster their defence further following the signings of Carl Jenkinson and Aaron Cresswell.

West Ham also signed Alex Song on loan from Barcelona on Saturday and presented the Cameroon international to the Upton Park faithful before their 3-1 defeat to Southampton.

That move is understood to have had a significant impact on Mohamed Diame's future, with the Hammers prepared to sell the midfielder, who has a £3.5 million release clause in his contract.

Hull City have already seen one bid rejected for the 27-year-old, while QPR, Crystal Palace and Everton are also monitoring developments.

QPR target Defoe could leave Toronto

    400417_heroa.jpg

Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko has refused to rule out the possibility of QPR target Jermain Defoe making an imminent move back to the Premier League.

The former Tottenham striker has reportedly drawn interest from QPR and Bezbatchenko admitted that there have been talks between Toronto and an unidentified club.

"As far as I'm concerned, Jermain Defoe is with TFC," Bezbatchenko said on Sunday. "It's important for Jermain to be here, because he is a great player. But if things change then we'll adjust.

"We receive offers all the time, especially for a player like Jermain.

"We have received an offer and we have discussed it internally. I think that when you score as many goals as he has and you have the reputation and background that he has it's not uncommon to receive these offers.

"We've received, actually, multiple offers before over the course of this year. So I want to confirm that we're in talks, but we have a relationship with Jermain too. We're speaking with him and no decisions have been made.

"We'll discuss it over the next 24 hours."

Defoe has scored 11 goals in 16 MLS games with Toronto, but has also missed considerable time due to injury. In addition to a sports hernia that he is receiving treatment for in England, the 31-year-old sat out the entire month of April with a hamstring injury.

Defoe signed a four-year deal with Toronto in January after leaving White Hart Lane and has previously worked under QPR manager Harry Redknapp in his days at West Ham and Spurs.

AC Milan announce Van Ginkel capture from Chelsea

    409248_heroa.jpg

Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has secured his move to AC Milan, the Rossoneri have declared.

The 21-year-old midfielder, whose first year at Stamford Bridge was disrupted by serious injury, was confirmed as a target for the Italian giants on Wednesday.

Van Ginkel is understood to have joined in a season-long loan deal, though the clubs are yet to announce the specifics.

The youngster follows Fernando Torres in swapping Jose Mourinho’s side for Milan, who began their Serie A campaign by beating Lazio 3-1 on Sunday.

The Spain international striker has agreed a two-year loan with Filippo Inzaghi's side after consistently disappointing at Stamford Bridge since his €63 million move from Liverpool.

'I'm not 100 per cent yet' - Ibrahimovic fires warning after comeback hat-trick

    451016_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic claims he is yet to reach full fitness despite scoring a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain threw down a title marker with their 5-0 demolition of Saint-Etienne.

Having taken five points from their first three outings of the season, PSG won convincingly, thanks in the main to the Swedish striker's inspired performance.

"Thanks to my team-mates, we spent a lovely evening," said Ibrahimovic after the match.

2I am coming back from injury and I'm not 100 per cent yet but I tried to give it everything and I scored three times. We won 5-0, the team found good rhythm and confidence and that is fine."

For coach Lauren Blanc, while the result and performance was welcome, he is still expecting more from his team.

"This was not the perfect match," said Blanc afterwards, before adding: "But we are happy with the result and the way it came. During certain parts of the game we found the PSG I love, [but] you can always improve as the perfect match does not exist."

Blanc was also pleased the way his side dealt with potentially negative tactics from Saint-Etienne on the night.

"We knew Saint-Etienne wanted to block us in midfield. We therefore knew the flanks would be important and we used them well tonight," he said.

Despite Ibrahimovic being the star of the show, Javier Pastore was singled out by Blanc for special praise for the way he exploited the wide areas which devastated the visitors at Parc des Princes.

"He was good and he has done well in his preparations," said Blanc.

"He has the opportunity and the talent to string together performances of a very good standard. He has gained confidence and that is good for him, good for the team and good for the coach.

"If he continues on this road, he will be happy. This is a long season and we need a Javier Pastore like the one we have now."

Everton bid for Stoke captain Shawcross

    403368_heroa.jpg

Everton have made a bid to sign Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross, Goal understands.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who has one England international cap to his name from 2012, is also interesting another club from overseas.

The Toffees conceded six goals to Chelsea in a 6-3 Premier League defeat on Saturday, a result which has spurred Roberto Martinez into action ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Shawcross, a former Manchester United trainee, joined Stoke initially on loan in 2007 before making the switch permanent a year later.

He has since made over 200 Premier League appearances for the Potters, becoming club captain in 2011.

Barcelona 'have a lot to improve' - Luis Enrique

    451058_heroa.jpg

Luis Enrique says his Barcelona side must still improve after they secured a late 1-0 win at Villarreal on Sunday.

The Catalans struggled to overcome a poor pitch and a stubborn defence, while also surviving two scares as the home team were denied by the woodwork.

However, the second-half introduction of Neymar opened things up before Lionel Messi finally set up the 82nd-minute winner for 19-year-old debutant Sandro to poke home.

"I've been satisfied with everything since I arrived at Barca and I'm pleased with the players' attitude," Luis Enrique said.

"We have a lot to improve but their willingness is staggering."

The victory means Barcelona will go into the international break with six points from two La Liga matches, while several of their World Cup stars are returning to full fitness.

"It was a passionate game to watch, with possession changing hands all the time and both sides having chances," Luis Enrique added.

“But the condition of the pitch didn't help either team when it came to shooting.

"However, both teams wanted to go out to play good football. Villarreal knew how to wait at the back but also caused some shocks in attack.

"This result will do us a lot of good, though, especially considering the way it came about. It has set us up nicely for the next few weeks."

With 18-year-old forward Munir having scored in a 3-0 win over Elche last week, and now Sandro breaking his duck, the future looks bright for Barcelona.

"I'm pleased to see that the youngsters are helping us so much," Luis Enrique continued.

"We are happy for Sandro and with all the hard work that the young players are doing."

Messi completed the 90 minutes but it was later revealed he pulled an adductor muscle in his right hip which will be assessed further.

Manchester United make late push for Nigel de Jong

    442290_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are making a late push to sign midfielder Nigel de Jong before the transfer window closes, Goal understands.

United are set to confirm the signing of Ajax's Daley Blind on Monday after agreeing terms on a €17.5 million deal with the Dutch club.

But the Red Devils could still bring in the 29-year-old AC Milan man in a €10m deal, in a bid to further bolster their midfield options.

Ed Woodward, United's executive vice-chairman, first met with De Jong's representatives in London earlier in August.

Talks between Woodward and De Jong's camp are understood to have progressed over the following weeks, with the player keen to link up with Louis van Gaal, who coached the former Manchester City midfielder while in charge of Netherlands.

    442273_heroa.jpg

United had been hopeful of luring Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal away from Turin this summer after a series of strong displays with Chile at the World Cup.

But with Vidal now set to stay in Serie A, the Red Devils have turned their attention back to De Jong ahead of the transfer deadline on Monday night.

United have been busy during the final days of the transfer window, wrapping up a €75m move for Angel Di Maria and completing a complicated deal to sign Marcos Rojo, though the defender is still awaiting a work permit.

Shinji Kagawa has now left the club and returned to Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal, with Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez also set to follow.

Goal understands that Welbeck is close to a season-long loan move to Tottenham, while Hernandez is on the verge of sealing a temporary switch to Real Madrid.

'He must improve' - Abate fires parting shot at Balotelli

    450803_heroa.jpg

AC Milan defender Ignazio Abate has suggested Mario Balotelli will not be missed at the club and has urged him to become more responsible.

Balotelli made his debut for Liverpool in their 3-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday after having left San Siro in a €20 million deal earlier this month.

Milan made light of the striker's absence in their opening Serie A clash, beating Lazio 3-1 in convincing style, and Abate does not believe the former Manchester City forward's loss will be keenly felt in the coming campaign.

"The coach [Pippo Inzaghi] said a very important thing in his press conference, which is that the man comes before the player," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"Mario is a truly great player, but he needs to improve in other areas. He needs to take on a lot more responsibility.

"I think that, in this group, we have got a good mix of experience and youth, but must not get ahead of ourselves."

Goals from Jeremy Menez, Sulley Muntari and Keisuke Honda sealed the win for Inzaghi in his first Serie A match in charge of Milan and Abate believes the squad has recaptured some of its identity under their former striker.

"Inzaghi is like one of the group," he added. "This season, I think we can achieve great things together. He really fired us up and I think the Milan DNA has returned."

Ancelotti furious at Real Madrid attitude

    451022_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti did not hide his frustration after his side slumped to a shock 4-2 defeat against Real Sociedad.

Having taken a two-goal lead after just 11 minutes thanks to strikes from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale, the European champions missed a host of chances before falling apart defensively.

Ancelotti apologised to the club's supporters after the loss, saying it was a performance that angered him because the players had been complacent.

"This is a loss that I do not like at all because I think occasionally you can play badly but when you lead 2-0 you have to show the required attitude to see out the game," he told reporters after the match.

"It is my responsibility. Something has to change and it will… I am sorry because I do not like it that the team have played in this way. You have to quickly change the things that have not gone well."

The defeat means Madrid already trail Barcelona by three points and champions Atletico by one in the early La Liga standings.

Ancelotti said it was a difficult match to review after his side started so impressively but rejected claims his team's poor performance was down to the departure of Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich.

"It is not easy to assess this match because there were two parts to it," said Ancelotti.

"The first 30 minutes were very good and we showed great concentration. For the rest of the time it was very bad – we thought the game was over. We gave away too many fouls and corners.

"We didn't have an adequate defensive system in place. We were too soft at the start. The game changed a lot after that and we defended badly. We were lacking balance above all.

"This isn't a problem with just one player or another, but a general problem. The team lost after a fantastic first half hour. When there isn't a good attitude, it makes no difference if Xabi Alonso is there or not."

Ancelotti defended the performances of new faces James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos, adding that the result would not change the club's transfer plans with just one day to go until the closure of the summer window.

He continued: "The new signings still need time, but they are adapting well. With a game like that it is always more difficult for the new players than it is for the others.

"This defeat changes nothing on transfers. We need to change our attitude and concentration in these types of games."

Manchester City line up Falcao as Negredo agrees Valencia deal

    443919_heroa.jpg

Manchester City are working on a sensational late move for Radamel Falcao after agreeing a deal which could see Alvaro Negredo move to Valencia, Goal understands.

The Primera Division side are understood to have had an offer to take Negredo on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent €28 million transfer accepted on Sunday.

And Manuel Pellegrini's team are now keen to put in place a similar deal to sign Falcao from Monaco.

City's rivals, Manchester United, are also rumoured to be in the running for the Colombia international but the Premier League champions are hopeful of securing a deal.

Arsenal have also been linked to Falcao but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has denied interest in the 28-year-old despite remaining active in the transfer market as the deadline approaches. Sevilla forward Carlos Bacca is his top target up front.

Negredo, meanwhile, is set for a swift return to Spain, having failed to displace Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko as the club's first-choice strikers.

Stevan Jovetic has also made a strong start to the season, while Negredo, who scored 23 goals in all competitions, is yet to feature in the new campaign due to injury.

Real Madrid were horrible - Casillas

    451091_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas slammed his side's performance against Real Sociedad as "horrible".

The Champions League holders raced into a two-goal lead inside 11 minutes at Anoeta before a complete capitulation saw them suffer a 4-2 defeat.

Madrid's set-piece defending was once again in the spotlight as La Real exploited the uncertain Sergio Ramos and Pepe, but Casillas has called on the entire team to improve their efforts following the collapse.

"First, I have to congratulate Real Sociedad, who played a spectacular game," he told Canal Plus.

"Our team was horrible. From two goals up, you cannot finish the game in this way, it is not the way nor the attitude to move forward with.

"We have to pay more attention because everyone is at fault and not just those at the back because all the team are needed to defend."

The Spain veteran admitted the international break will come as something of a relief as Madrid aim to forget a result which has already seen them slip behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid after two rounds of La Liga.

Casillas said: "We will be outside all the discussions and what the journalists say. We do have to pay attention to the voices from inside, though, because what happened in this match is not normal."

:(Manchester United striker Chicharito set for Real Madrid loan

    415594_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid are on the verge of completing a season-long loan deal for Manchester United striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, Goal understands.

Los Blancos had considered moving for both Radamel Falcao of Monaco and Manchester City’s Alvaro Negredo but have decided that the Mexican - who has been told that he is free to leave Old Trafford - represents the best option.

Chicharito is seen as a player who can add an extra goal threat but one who will not compromise the standing of the club's biggest stars, with Karim Benzema currently first-choice centre forward.

The 26-year-old has never been able to nail down a consistent starting role with the Red Devils since his move from Guadalajara in the summer of 2010 and was keen to seek first-team football elsewhere.

He sees Madrid as the ideal opportunity to prove himself, feeling that he was not given sufficient chances to impress at Old Trafford.

A season's loan has been agreed between the two clubs, with only personal terms left to finalise before the move is officially announced.
