Brazil 1-0 Colombia: Neymar leads Dunga to first win

    452811_heroa.jpg

Dunga's second spell in charge of Brazil started with a win as a piece of Neymar brilliance downed 10-man Colombia 1-0 in Miami on Friday.Playing with a man less for 41 minutes after star Juan Cuadrado saw red for a second bookable offence, Colombia appeared on track for an unlikely draw in their international friendly at Sun Life Stadium.

But Neymar stepped up with a delightful free-kick that glanced off the post and past Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina in the 83rd minute as Brazil emerged victorious in a repeat of the pair's quarter-final meeting at the World Cup.

Named Luiz Felipe Scolari's successor following Brazil's embarrassing World Cup campaign, Dunga's return inspired an end to the nation's run of back-to-back defeats.Brazil went into the match having lost 7-1 to eventual world champions Germany and 3-0 to the Netherlands in their third-place play-off.

Tensions were evidently high after the infamous last-eight meeting at the showpiece event in July, when Neymar suffered a tournament-ending fractured vertebra following a heavy challenge from Juan Camilo Zuniga. And that strain trickled over to Friday's meeting as there were more yellow cards than shots as Canadian referee Dave Gantar was kept busy during a goalless first half.

A total of five yellow cards were handed out, with Cuadrado, Ramires (celebrating his 50th cap), Luiz Gustavo, Zuniga and Carlos Valdes all cautioned. But it was a lively end to the half after Brazil had a goal ruled out for offside in the 24th minute.

Brazil broke quickly on the counter-attack in the 32nd minute, with attacking midfielder Willian driving forward in a four-on-two situation.Willian squared the ball to onrushing Chelsea team-mate Oscar inside the penalty area but he flashed his shot wide of the post.

At the other end, Zuniga fired an audacious effort from outside the box just over the crossbar with seven minutes remaining until the interval.Colombia came close again to breaking the deadlock after Cuadrado forced Brazil goalkeeper Jefferson to turn his low shot away for a corner in the 41st minute.Referee Gantar was in the thick of the action four minutes into the second half as the match threatened to boil over when Cuadrado was shown a second yellow for a seemingly soft challenge on Neymar.

Brazil's numerical advantage was obvious and they had another chance to make the breakthrough in the 56th minute after Oscar's nifty back-heel played in Diego Tardelli, whose attempt was blocked for a corner. The five-time world champions finally found the back of the net thanks to Neymar with seven minutes left to play.

After Brazil were awarded a controversial free-kick for a handball, Neymar curled the ball inside the top corner.Substitute and new Manchester United signing Radamel Falcao had a golden chance to level proceedings for Colombia in the closing stages but his attempt went over the bar.

Pogba: Conte can bring nastiness to Italy

    452467_heroa.jpg

Juventus and France star Paul Pogba believes Antonio Conte will restore a "nastiness" to Italy that will make them tough to beat. The midfielder enjoyed back-to-back Scudetto successes under Conte before he stepped down as Juve boss to succeed Cesare Prandelli with the national team this summer.

Conte's reign got off to the perfect start as they beat Netherlands 2-0 in a friendly in midweek and Pogba is confident the Azzurri will benefit from the former midfielder's tenacious approach."Conte can give Italy the right nastiness. He is a special tactician and a person who works very hard," he was quoted as saying by Tuttosport.

Pogba was at the heart of France's 1-0 win over Spain and he admitted he was thrilled to record a first-ever victory over the European champions."I finally beat Spain. It had never happened, not even at youth level," he said."It's a success for the fans. The group is progressing, there is always a good spirit and we feel better."

Pogba also had high praise for compatriot Kingsley Coman, who joined Juve from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer."Coman? He's a fantastic player who has a unique potential that few possess. He will give a positive thing to Juve. Juve will do great things with [Massimiliano] Allegri," the 21-year-old added.

Real Madrid post record revenue to top sporting rich list for 10th consecutive year

    444572_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have posted record revenue figures to ensure they top the rich list for sporting institutions for the 10th year in a row.

Club president Florentino Perez confirmed that a general meeting of the directors will take place on September 21 but was eager to reveal the staggering financial statistics of the world's richest club at the Santiago Bernabeu on Friday.Madrid generated a total turnover of €603.9 million in the 2013-14 season, an increase of 10.9 per cent on the previous campaign, while their net profit has increased by a further 44% to €38.5m.

Perez also stated the club's net debt has fallen by more than 21% to just over €75m, while a total of €167m was contributed to state tax and national insurance policies."For the tenth consecutive year, we will be the highest earning sports institution in the world, and for the third consecutive year, Forbes considers us the most valuable club in the world," Perez said to reporters.

"For me, being chairman of Real Madrid is an honour, but running this wonderful club is a responsibility and we should never forget that, after 112 years of history, Real Madrid still belongs to its members."Madrid broke the global transfer record in the summer of 2013 when they signed Gareth Bale for €100m, while they spent a further €120m this summer to bring James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Keylor Navas to the club.

The European champions have recouped a significant amount of transfer spending through player sales, with the departures of Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria alone combining to generate more than €100m over the past 12 months.

Reus: Gomez must stand up to boo-boys

    452230_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund and Germany attacker Marco Reus has called on his team-mates to bounce back from the 4-2 loss to Argentina - a performance which was booed by their supporters. The newly-crowned world champions were dealt payback by the Albiceleste in midweek as Angel Di Maria inspired them to a victory in their first encounter since the final in Brazil.

Germany players - Mario Gomez in particular - were whistled by their supporters at the final whistle and Reus has urged his team-mates to stand tall in the face of criticism."We absolutely have to improve after Argentina. You have to stand against the whistles," he told reporters.

"He's [Gomez] had a difficult year. We'll put him back on the scene so he'll soon be ready again."Reus was forced to miss the World Cup due to an ankle injury and, while he admits it was a bitter blow, he is confident he will soon be back to full fitness and is raring to go against Scotland in Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier.

"Of course that [missing the World Cup] was a sad event for me, but now I'm coming back full throttle and will soon be at 100 per cent," he added."Not only me, but the whole team are looking forward to Sunday. Playing here is magical."

Munir: My jaw dropped after Spain call-up

    390758_heroa.jpg

Barcelona rising star Munir El Haddadi admits he was left open-mouthed after being called up to the Spain squad to replace Diego Costa. The Chelsea forward has left the national squad following their 1-0 defeat to France in order to receive treatment on a hamstring problem.

Head coach Vicente del Bosque opted to replace Costa with the uncapped Munir for the up-coming Euro 2016 qualifier with Macedonia, and the 19-year-old says he could not believe it when the call came."When they told me, my mouth fell open. It's a dream to play for the Spain team and I'm very happy," he told reporters.

"I've realised a dream. It's a moment I want to enjoy, an opportunity to take, and to give my best."Munir, who has also been eligible to play for Morocco, says he would relish the chance to represent Spain at Euro 2016 in two years' time.

"Every trophy you can win is good and to be there would be a hugely proud moment, to play with the Spain team is what I would like to do," he added."I've followed the national team every summer that they have played since I was small, and now I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me at every turn."

Szczesny: No guilt over keeping out Ospina

    441498_heroa.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny says that team-mate David Ospina is not his friend and has no guilt over keeping him out of the team.

The Poland international enjoyed an excellent Premier League season for the Gunners last term and saw backup Lukasz Fabianski move to Swansea City as a result.

Ospina was brought in from Nice in July but his arrival has left Szczesny more convinced that he is the club's first choice.

"I feel confident of being No.1 but I know I can't let myself play a few bad games," he told Przeglad Sportowy.

"I know Ospina's ambitions don't end at sitting on the bench and clapping his hands while watching me play.

"He is a nice guy. In a sporting sense, he is a suitable player at a suitable club but it's easier for me just in one aspect - I do not feel sorry for him.

"I do not think 'he's my friend' as I thought about [Fabianski]. I was convinced Lukasz deserved to play but not at my expense."

Rooney is the perfect England captain - Wilshere

    452708_heroa.jpg

England midfielder Jack Wilshere is certain that Wayne Rooney is the ideal choice to captain the national team.

Rooney was handed the armband after Steven Gerrard retired from international football following the team's dismal World Cup campaign, in which the Three Lions exited at the group stage without a win.

Frank Lampard, Gerrard's deputy, also called time on his England career and manager Roy Hodgson subsequently named Rooney to wear the armband, though some have questioned the Manchester United skipper's place in the team despite his match-winning penalty against Norway on Wednesday.

"He is great," Wilshere told reporters. "Even before he was made captain, I looked up to him. He is a leader, a personality and is not scared to tell you when you are doing something wrong. I look forward to playing for him.

"He is the perfect choice for us. He was thrown into the scene at Everton, like me when I was young, and he has had a fantastic career and scored so many goals.

"He is the standout choice for me. He was always vocal but now he is putting his arm around us youngsters and having a word with us."

Following the retirements of Gerrard and Lampard, the England midfield has an unfamiliar look to it as Fabian Delph and Jack Colback both received their first calls-up for the Norway friendly and Monday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Switzerland.

Wilshere, though, believes that, with the likes of Jordan Henderson partnering him in the middle, the Three Lions have a solid spine with plenty of competition.

He added: "I played with Jordan for a few years, Under-21s level, and I always worked well with him. He is so fit and really gets up the pitch well. He has high quality.

"It was disappointing that Gerrard and Lampard retired but that is the level we want to get to. There is also Fabian and Colback – there is a good battle going on.

"It is a big season for me and I have had a good pre-season for the first time in a few years. I played every game [for Arsenal] apart from Leicester and I am feeling strong and stronger every game. I feel as though I'm where I want to be."

Germany proved doubters wrong in World Cup - Ozil

    424849_heroa.jpg

Germany star Mesut Ozil believes that he and his team-mates went a long way to silencing their critics when they won the World Cup earlier this summer.Joachim Low's side had made a habit of falling short in major tournaments in recent years, reaching the last four of the competition in 2006 and 2010 and Euro 2012, as well as the Euro 2008 final.

However, they bucked the trend in Brazil, beating the hosts in the semi-finals before seeing off Argentina to life the trophy at the Maracana, despite some skeptical voices in the German media."Lots of people in the media had their say before the tournament and gave many opinions, some positive and some negative, about the team and individual players," he told Arsenal's official website.

"Things like us not being a team or not being mature enough, that some players wouldn't’t battle enough or weren't’t able to do certain things. We proved to everyone what strong character we have as a team. Of course you need some luck at a tournament like the World Cup too. The success shows that we are strong and that as a team and as individuals, we did not let ourselves be affected by what was reported in the media.

"We always believed in ourselves and there was always positive energy around the team."In the past, we've been unlucky or not quite been able to maximise our potential and have gone out just before the end [of major tournaments].

"This time, we were finally able to overcome that and reach the final. Once we got there, we knew that we could bring back the trophy."Low tweaked his system during the tournament, fielding Ozil on either flank, but the Arsenal playmaker was happy with his performances in a new role.

“I was very satisfied,” he said. “It’s important to remember that I played on the left flank, a position that I’ve never really played in before. In the past, I’ve either been on the right side or in the playmaker position."I’m pleased with the statistics and they are part of the reason I was content with my performances."

Gerrard 'blown away' by Liverpool boss Rodgers

    396274_heroa.jpg

Steven Gerrard admits he has been "blown away" by Brendan Rodgers since the northern Irishman's arrival at Liverpool and rates him among the very best managers he has worked with.

Rodgers arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2012 and led a youthful and dynamic Liverpool team to the brink of a first league title in 24 years in his second season, eventually finishing two points behind champions Manchester City.

The Reds have begun the new Premier League season in promising fashion despite the summer departure of talisman Luis Suarez, and Gerrard has no doubt over who is responsible for the team's continued progress.

"Tactically he is very clever," the Liverpool captain told US broadcaster ABC. "He reacts to situations, changes things for the better, see problems and adjusts things very quickly.

"In the two years I have worked with him he is up there with the best of them and I've worked with [Rafa] Benitez, [Fabio] Capello, [Roy] Hodgson - big names.

"He can play any formation he wants to play as he knows he has the personnel and he is not scared to change formation from game to game or tinker with it as the game is going on.

"He is a players' manager, a manager you want to work hard for and win for. He shows the players unbelievable respect, he treats them like his own children and creates an unbelievable atmosphere to work in.

"I have been blown away by how sharp he is in the dressing room, how quick he is to see a problem."

Having fallen narrowly short in last season's Premier League title race, Gerrard insists his manager and his team-mates are determined to cap Liverpool's spectacular recent resurgence with silverware this term.

“Brendan has been here for two years and I think he is desperate to get a trophy in the cabinet - that is goal number one," he added.

"It is very important we maintain our place in the Champions League but after the journey we went on last year and the confidence we gained from it I think we are genuine title contenders as we have proved we can mix it with anyone in this league."

Injured Sturridge ruled out of Switzerland clash

Daniel Sturridge has pulled out of the England squad ahead of Monday's opening Euro 2016 qualifier with Switzerland after sustaining a thigh injury, the Football Association has confirmed.

The Liverpool ace limped out of a Three Lions training session on Friday morning with the problem and has now returned to Merseyside after a scan confirmed that the injury was too severe for him to feature in Basel.
Sturridge's absence is a further blow to England manager Roy Hodgson, who reacted angrily to media questioning after his side's laboured 1-0 win over Norway at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

Arsenal's signing Danny Welbeck is the likeliest candidate to replace Sturridge against the Swiss, though Wayne Rooney may also be moved into the No.9 position as he continues his quest to become England's all-time top scorer.

Hodgson has not called up a replacement for Sturridge.

    Morata fitness boost for Juventus

    416785_heroa.jpg

Summer signing Alvaro Morata has given Juventus a boost by returning to training on Friday.

The striker joined the Italian champions from Real Madrid for a reported fee of €20 million on July 19 but suffered an ankle sprain just two days later.

However, Morata, who scored 11 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos last season, could now be available for selection after the international break.

"I'm very happy to be back with the team," the 21-year-old attacker wrote on his Instagram page after training with his team-mates.

Andrea Barzagli also featured during Friday's session, having recovered from the heel problem that ruled him out of the start of the season.

The defender is expected to go straight back into the Juventus starting line-up when the Bianconeri host Udinese in Turin on September 13, while Morata is likely to be on the bench.

Spain replace injured Costa with uncapped Munir

    448508_heroa.jpg

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has called up uncapped teenager Munir El Haddadi to replace the injured Diego Costa in his squad for Monday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia.

Chelsea striker Costa was forced to pull out of the panel with a hamstring injury sustained in his adopted country's 1-0 friendly loss to France on Thursday night and has returned to Stamford Bridge for treatment.

Consequently, Del Bosque has now turned to Munir, who had only just received his first call-up to the Spain Under-21s earlier this week.

The 19-year-old also only made his Barcelona debut last month but he capped an impressive display with a well-taken goal in a 3-0 win over Elche.

Munir's addition to the Spain squad is made all the more remarkable by the fact that he only broke into the Barcelona B team earlier this year.

Should the teenager feature against Macedonia, it will put to bed all questions over the attacker's international career, with Munir also eligible to play for Morocco until he features in a competitive fixture for Spain.

Galliani: Torres could do great things at AC Milan

    452700_heroa.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani feels Fernando Torres could achieve great things at San Siro.

The Rossoneri signed the Spain international on a two-year loan deal from Chelsea just before the close of the summer transfer window, after being deemed surplus to requirements by coach Jose Mourinho. However, the Portuguese coach has since spoken glowingly about Torres' character and professionalism and Galliani revealed after a visit from club owner Silvio Berlusconi on Friday that Milan are just as taken with their new signing.

"[Silvio] loves Torres," the Rossoneri vice-president told reporters. "Fernando is an amazing guy."If his quality on the field is of the same level as his human quality, we will see great things from him."

Having also acquired Marco van Ginkel and Giacomo Bonaventura before the transfer window closed on August 31, Galliani admitted that he is happy with his summer business and is thus expecting big things from Pippo Inzaghi's squad this season."I would say that Milan has strengthened well on the final day of the market," he argued. "I have also said this to Inzaghi, but I do not want to talk of goals [for the 2014-15 campaign]."

Milan kicked off the new Serie A season with a 3-1 home win against Lazio.

Bolt: I told Balotelli to move to England

    392409_heroa.jpg

Sprinter Usain Bolt has claimed that he played a part in Mario Balotelli 's decision to return to England. The former Manchester City striker left AC Milan for Liverpool just before the close of this summer's transfer window, admitting that he felt he had made a mistake ever leaving the Premier League.

Bolt, who is one of Manchester United's most famous fans, has now revealed that he influenced Balotelli's thinking."We were speaking the other day and I told him that England is the best place to play football," the world's fastest man told ESPN ."For me, as long as he makes a couple of errors when he plays against United, everyone will be happy!"

Meanwhile, Bolt believes that United's new boss, Louis van Gaal, deserves time to turn the Old Trafford outfit around, after a poor start to the 2014-15 season."It will be difficult for the team to adopt to the new system but with time everything will get better," the Jamaican insisted.

"Manchester United must get back among the top four. Although they won't win the league, they must return to the Champions League."Then, next season we will be good enough to go for the title."

Japan 0-2 Uruguay: Cavani on target for Celeste

    452643_heroa.jpg

Javier Aguirre's maiden game as Japan coach ended in defeat as Edinson Cavani helped Uruguay to a 2-0 win.

The former Mexico boss was chosen to replace Alberto Zaccheroni in July, the Italian paying the price for a World Cup campaign that yielded just one point from their three group games. However, Aguirre's reign began in defeat in Sapporo on Friday as Japan's opponents clinically claimed victory.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was missing from the sidelines after undergoing back surgery last month, but there was no let up from the South Americans, who moved ahead 11 minutes before the break when Cavani was the beneficiary of a defensive gaffe.

Hernandez - who joined Hull City from Palermo for a club-record fee last week - was one of several substitutes introduced in the second half and made his mark by making sure of the win with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Neither side was able to find a breakthrough in a tight opening and it took a defensive lapse from Hajime Hosogai for the deadlock to be broken. The midfielder's poor touch deep in his own area was picked up by debutant Diego Rolan and his throughball was collected by Cavani, whose shot deflected over Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima before nestling in the bottom left-hand corner.

Despite the setback, Japan enjoyed a spell of pressure towards the end of the half and Yusuke Minagawa saw a goalbound header well blocked while Junya Tanaka's shot stung the palms of Uruguay 'keeper Fernando Muslera in the first chance of note after the break.

Cristian Rodriguez then tried his luck from distance but his fizzing strike went wide of the left-hand post. It mattered little, however, as Hernandez made it 2-0 in the 71st minute by sweeping under the legs of Kawashima following a spell of pinball in the Japan box, although the goalkeeper may feel he could have done more to stop the effort.

Real Madrid made Verratti bid, says agent

    425318_heroa.jpg

Marco Verratti's agent has revealed that Real Madrid attempted to sign the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder this summer but their bid was turned down by the Ligue 1 champions.

The Italy international has developed into an important first-team member since joining PSG from Pescara in the summer of 2012 and he has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.Nevertheless, PSG have no intention of letting go of the 21-year-old and issued Madrid's offer short shrift, according to Donato Di Campli.

"Did Real Madrid try to sign Verratti? You could say that, yes," the player's agent was quoted as saying by Sky."Madrid made an offer for Marco, but PSG had their demands and the clubs didn't reach an agreement, so we didn't do anything more.

"This is why Marco stayed put and still plays with PSG."Verratti has a contract with the Parisians until the summer of 2018. The midfielder has made 86 appearances for PSG in all competitions so far.

I have zero disagreements with 'loyal' Ronaldo - Perez

    364636_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has insisted he has “zero disagreements” with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese star admitted at a promotional event earlier this week that he was unhappy with some of the deals the club made during the summer transfer window, with the sales of Angel Di Maria to Manchester United and Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich having caused particular consternation.“My opinion is very clear but I can’t always say what I think. If I was in charge, I might have done things differently,” Ronaldo said.

“Di Maria and Xabi were very important for us, but they are no longer here and we must be happy with the new players.”And while he moved to temper his comments by insisting “I’m sure it will all go well,” he has since added that he could one day return to Manchester United.

“I love Manchester, everybody knows that. I have said it many times: Manchester is in my heart,” he told the Daily Mail. “I left many good friends there, the supporters are amazing and I wish I can come back one day.”

But Perez has moved to quell fears of a rift between the pair by claiming all is well with Ronaldo.“There are zero disagreements,” he told the media at the announcement of Madrid’s accounts for season 2013-14. “I know Cristiano very well. Besides being the world’s best, his loyalty is unquestionable.“Cristiano didn’t question the club’s policies or ambitions.”

Perez added that the two controversial sales were made with good reason.“Real Madrid made Di Maria the best offer we could, we offered him the maximum cap. No player at this club had such income [as Di Maria demanded] except for Ronaldo.

“Xabi is almost at the end of his career and wants to manage it in his own way. His position will be well covered by Toni Kroos and Asier Illarramendi in the future.”
The president also insisted that it was coach Carlo Ancelotti who had the final say in the club’s decision not to attempt to sign Radamel Falcao from Monaco before the striker signed a loan agreement with Manchester United.

“Falcao is a great player who we have thought about signing in the past as well as this summer. But we decided not to sign him and the decision was largely based on the opinion of the coach.”

Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal is expected to miss Chile's international friendly against Haiti on September 10 due to recurring knee problems.

The 27-year-old underwent knee surgery ahead of the 2014 World Cup, but recovered in time to feature at this summer's tournament as Chile made it to the round of 16.Nevertheless, his right knee is now again causing him some discomfort and he is set to leave the Chile camp after Friday's friendly against Mexico, thus missing the Haiti clash.

"Arturo is feeling some discomfort in his knee again and we are talking about the possibility of sending him back to his club after the match against Mexico," Sergio Jadue, president of the Chilean football association, told reporters."But the rest of the squad will remain here for both games."

Vidal featured for 85 minutes in Juventus' 1-0 win over Chievo at the weekend as the Serie A champions kicked off the 2014-15 season.
