Dunga to announce Brazil Superclasico squad

    454276_heroa.jpg

On Wednesday Brazil coach Dunga will announce his new squad for the upcoming Gillette Brasil Global Tour October dates.

The Selecao will face Argentina in the Superclasico de las Americas in Beijing on October 11 before meeting Japan in Singapore October 14.

Dunga, who was coach between 2006 and 2010, returned to the position to succeed Luiz Felipe Scolari following Brazil’s semi-final exit at this year’s World Cup.

He kicked off his second stint in charge this past week with consecutive 1-0 victories over Colombia in Miami and Ecuador in New Jersey.

His first squad since his appointment included just 10 of the 23 that contested the World Cup with Scolari.

Atletico Mineiro’s Diego Tardelli was been drafted in as a false no.9 as Dunga attempts to introduce a more contemporary system akin to those used by Barcelona, Spain and Germany.

Neymar was named the team’s captain by Dunga, but it is as yet unclear whether he retain the armband once Thiago Silva makes his expected return to the squad from injury.

Dunga will announce his squad at 11am local time at the CBF headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

Real Madrid bought me to win them La Decima - Bale

    454901_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale feels Real Madrid were willing to spend €100 million to sign him as they believed he could help win them La Decima.

The Wales international joined from Tottenham for a world-record fee and played a pivotal role as Madrid claimed their 10th European title, in addition to the Copa del Rey.

“The club had been chasing [the Champions League] for I think 12 years and it was a reason they brought me in - to try and make the team stronger to win that Champions League, and to do it in my first season was a dream come true. Not just for me but for everybody," he said in an interview with BT Sport.

“It was a good first season. To win the 10th Champions League for Madrid was obviously a big target for everybody at the club and for me personally to do it in my first season was a dream come true.

“Obviously the Copa del Rey is another major trophy which is always great to win."

Bale also insisted that he had nothing to prove to the Santiago Bernabeu faithful following his drawn-out transfer saga and staggering price tag.

“For me personally, I think if I just play my football then hopefully they will be satisfied so, I didn’t feel like I had to do anything extra special to prove myself,” he said.

“I feel like I’ve done that in previous seasons at Tottenham, and hopefully last season as well.

“I think for me, I knew I was going to the biggest club in the world, and I fully believed that if I played my football then I’d contribute well enough and thankfully that happened last season."

Holders Spain meet Serbia in Euro Under-21 play-off

    289591_heroa.jpg

Holders Spain must overcome Serbia in a two-legged play-off to reach the European Under-21 Championship finals in the Czech Republic next summer.

Albert Celades’ charges finished top of Group 4 in the preliminary phase of the competition, winning seven and drawing the other of their eight games, and Friday’s draw deemed their reward to be a clash with a Serbia side who finished second to Italy in Group 9.

But despite Radovan Curcic’s troops having failed to win their section, Celades insists they will be tough to beat.

“Serbia are one of the hardest opponents we could have faced – a team that were in a tough group with Italy and Belgium and had an impressive second-place finish,” he told uefa.com. “No doubt they will be very tough opponents.”

Elsewhere in the play-off draw, Netherlands face Portugal and England meet Croatia. Group 7 winners Sweden will play Group 10 kings France, while there is another meeting between two pool winners as Slovakia go up against Italy.

The ties will be played between October 8 and 14, with the winners of each appearing in the finals in the Czech Republic next June.

Simeone: Real Madrid fans are helping me improve

    447938_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone revealed he has motivated by praise from Real Madrid fans ahead of Saturday's derby at Santiago Bernabeu.

Simeone guided Atletico Madrid to the Liga title against the odds last season and also led his side to the Champions League final - which Real won after extra-time.

The former Argentina international wrote off Atletico's chances of retaining their title at the start of the current campaign, but said praise from Real fans has given him extra motivation as the Spanish champions prepare to renew their rivalries with Carlo Ancelotti's side.

"Beyond what happens during a football match, a lot of Real fans have congratulated me and value my hard work. That helps me to continue progressing and improving." Simeone told Clarin newspaper.

"People identified themselves with our hard work, our commitment, how we faced our difficulties and kept going through tough times.

"They could see similarities between Atletico and [Diego] Maradona's Napoli, a humble side competing against the likes of Inter, AC Milan and Juventus. We're a small-time team and that makes us likeable."

Simeone stated that he was not interested in personal plaudits on the back of what he achieved last season.

"I don't work for people's recognition. I'm not obsessed with being liked." he said.

"I play to win, I look to be competitive and I get really caught up in a player's development."

Guardiola: Ribery can play if he can train without pain

    454531_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery has convinced Pep Guardiola that he is ready to make his first appearance of the season when Bayern Munich face Stuttgart.

The former France winger has not played since Bayern's DFB-Pokal triumph in May due to a knee injury.

Ribery missed the World Cup with a back problem and has since retired from international duty, but Bayern coach Guardiola is set to unleash the former Olympique de Marseille man on Stuttgart in Saturday's Bundesliga clash at the Allianz Arena.

"If he doesn't have any problems with his patella tendon, then he can play." said the former Barcelona coach.

"The last 10 to fourteen days he has trained well, almost without pain."

Guardiola has warned not to expect too much, too soon from Ribery following a lengthy lay-off, however.

He added: "Let's not forget he's made perhaps one 90-minute appearance in the last three to four months."

The Spaniard revealed that recent signing Mehdi Benatia is not ready to make his Bayern bow this weekend.

He said: "Benatia still needs time, but he will help us sooner or later. We have signed a great player."

Bayern recorded two wins over Stuttgart last season by virtue of last-minute goals and Guardiola has not forgotten the challenge posed by Armin Veh's outfit.

    "Stuttgart aren’t easy," he warned.

"It's an important month. The players have trained very well. They're fit and ready."

Guardiola said that all the players away on international duty have returned fully fit, but there are doubts over Xabi Alonso and Arjen Robben, while Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez, Thiago, Rafinha and Mitchell Weiser are all out.

Van Gaal: Injured Jones likely to miss a month

    441711_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that Phil Jones could miss up to a month of action after suffering a torn hamstring.

The defender was replaced by Phil Jagielka late on in England's win over Switzerland and is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

Jones joins a long list of players who are unavailable to Van Gaal, though the coach is hopeful that summer signing Luke Shaw will be able to make his debut against QPR after recovering from his own hamstring injury.

"[Marouane] Fellaini is more than a month away, Jones maybe three weeks or a month. [Michael] Carrick isn't ready but has run for the first time on grass," he told reporters.

"[Sam] Johnstone has elbow problems, [Chris] Smalling isn't fit enough, [James] Wilson and [Reece] James are not ready yet. [Ashley] Young and [Jesse] Lingard are also injured.

He added on Shaw that "he is fit enough to play some minutes".

The Red Devils have failed to win any of their four competitive fixtures since Van Gaal took over in the summer, with many writing off the club's chances of adding to their 20 league titles.

But the former Barcelona coach is confident his side can recover and is eyeing up a top-three finish that would see them automatically qualify for the Champions League group stages next season.

"We've spoken about targets. A club like Manchester United has to set targets and I think within the top three is logical," he said.

Sunday's encounter against Harry Redknapp's side could also see Radamel Falcao make his debut, with the striker's loan move from Monaco leading to questions regarding Van Gaal's selection in attack.

But he was unwilling to give away his side, with Robin van Persie, Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria and club captain Wayne Rooney all vying for roles in the team.

"We shall see who plays on Sunday. I'm a coach who always decides based on what I have observed.

"We've done very well in the transfer market. That's a big plus, and we have to produce results, starting against QPR."

Manchester United and Barcelona have to manage player egos, claims Cruyff

    455058_heroa.jpg

Former Netherlands star Johan Cruyff believes Manchester United and Barcelona face similar issues if they are to succeed under new managers.

While Luis Enrique has taken over the helm at Camp Nou and added Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Thomas Vermaelen and others to the squad, Louis van Gaal has overseen an overhaul at United, with six new faces arriving at Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window.

The signings of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria have led some to question how Van Gaal will go about selecting a side from a squad that already includes Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and club captain Wayne Rooney.

And Cruyff believes his fellow countryman will find it difficult to manage the various egos in his squad as he looks to improve on a start to the campaign that has seen the Red Devils fail to win any of their four competitive fixtures.

"There should be a logic always but the big problem is to manage all these players," he told The Guardian. "It's the same thing with Barcelona. They now have Suarez, [Lionel] Messi, Neymar – how do you play them together?

"If you see them individually then, of course, they are great players. It's the same at Manchester United. Individually they are great but they have to play like a team.
"So then you get another problem. They are all famous. They earn a lot of money both on and off the field. How can you create a team and bring all these egos together?
"The main goal for Manchester United is for them to play well – and not have a player saying 'I play well, I scored two goals'. Because if I score two goals but three goals go into our net then we lose.
"They provide [Van Gaal] with a lot of good players but he has to turn them into a team. And you can't arrange the chemistry of the team in two weeks. It needs time."
Van Gaal has previously stated that he could require up to three months to mould the 20-time English champions into a side that is able to play at the required level to challenge for silverware as they look to adapt to a new 3-5-2 formation.

And Cruyff is in agreement that the former Bayern Munich coach will need time to impose himself on the team, though he does not feel that it will take a whole season to improve the side sufficiently.

"No, no [it will not take a season]. That's too long. But it doesn't mean they will win the league.

"You can see a better performance every week and you can aim for a better fit as a team in the details. And [Van Gaal] is a person of details. So it could be possible that things work.

"But, once again, can these people develop their own game for the sake of the team? It's not easy.

Morata poised for Juventus debut against Udinese

    455062_heroa.jpg

Alvaro Morata is fit enough to make his Juventus debut against Udinese, coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed.

The striker has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in training shortly after completing his move from Real Madrid during the summer, and while the Spaniard is not yet ready for 90 minutes of action, Allegri expects to be able to call on the 21-year-old for Saturday's clash.

“Too much has been made of the injuries,” Allegri told reporters on Friday when asked about the supposed crisis within the squad. “You all know that there are two or three players who have had problems for a few months, like Andrea Barzagli and Arturo Vidal.
"Giorgio Chiellini was suspended and he’s now training again, though.

“Barzagli could be on the bench tomorrow, Alvaro Morata will return, Andrea Pirlo is on the road to recovery.

“Morata is available, but he hasn’t got 90 minutes in his legs. He’s in decent shape, but we expect a lot from him. As well as having speed, he has great quality."

Carlos Tevez denied reports this week that he was struggling with injury and Allegri has confirmed the Argentina striker is fit to play - though he warned he may have to rest some players before the Champions League begins next week.

"Carlos Tevez has no injury," he said. “I’ll talk to Carlos. He is fine and he wants to play, but I want to evaluate any risks as we have to start the Champions League campaign strongly, too.

“I have faith in the players at my disposal. The season is long and everyone will have to contribute something.

“Udinese are a difficult side to face," he continued. "They are well built and Andrea Stramaccioni has inherited a good team from Francesco Guidolin.

“It will be a special game for me as it will be my first as Juventus boss at the Juventus Stadium. We’ll need the support of the fans.”

Allegri also made it clear he is in no rush to abandon Antonio Conte's winning 3-5-2 formula, and is determined to find a way to fit Patrice Evra into the side.

“To be clear, it is not as if Juventus belong to one coach if they play with four at the back and another if they field three," said the former AC Milan boss.

“Ripping up a system that has worked makes no sense. Also, if Barzagli and Chiellini are missing then a four-man defence is no good.

“Evra was an important signing and he’ll certainly play tomorrow. He can play in a four-man defence or a five-man midfield. He just has to get used to Italian football.”

Allegri also believes Juve's quest for a fourth-successive title has been made extremely tough by the strengthening their main rivals conducted in the summer.

“Roma have made some excellent moves in the transfer market, Milan too," he added.

“It will be a balanced championship and harder than last term. It will be decided in the last few weeks. Napoli are to be feared as well.”

Mourinho hopeful over Diego Costa fitness

    446366_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says there is a chance Diego Costa could be fit to face Swansea City on Saturday.

The former Atletico Madrid striker, who was voted the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month for August, was forced to miss Spain's Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia with a hamstring injury.

Having arrived at Stamford Bridge during the summer, the 25-year-old has found the net on four occasions in his first three Chelsea matches.

And Mourinho has revealed Costa will go through one last training session before a final decision is made on his participation against the Swans, with Loic Remy available to make his debut should he fail to prove his fitness.

He told reporters: "Diego came back injured on Saturday so he's had one week to work with the medical department. He has a chance to play."

Mourinho also confirmed that the remainder of his squad is fit to take on Garry Monk's side as the only teams in the league still with 100 percent records face off.

The former Real Madrid boss believes the signings Monk has made, including the influential Gylfi Sigurdsson, has led to their early season success.

"Swansea have a good team and they have had a good team since they got promoted. They play good football.

"Swansea bought well and invested well. They bought some quality players and they are doing very well."

Pressure on Neymar is brutal - Luis Enrique

    455054_heroa.jpg

Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique admits the pressure on Neymar is "brutal" as he prepares to bring the striker back into the side this weekend.

Neymar has been firmly in the spotlight throughout the past year, with the high-profile saga surrounding his transfer to Camp Nou followed by his appearance at the World Cup on home soil in Brazil.

The 22-year-old has now recovered from minor fitness problems and is poised to return to club action against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, and his coach is confident the player can continue to grow into one of game's outstanding talents.

"He's ready to compete, he should get the all-clear tomorrow," Luis Enrique told a press conference. "He's a special player. He's subject to brutal pressure for his country and his club and I hope that, through hard work, he can become one of the best players in the world."

    20B7EEE542B5357CA287F7C7ECC98415.png

Luis Enrique is also confident Lionel Messi will be fully fit, despite the Argentine having to train on his own earlier this week, and says he has yet to inform the players over who will start in goal."I've decided whether [Marc-Andre] Ter Stegen or [Claudio] Bravo plays but first I have to tell them," he said.

"Messi is ready to play, he's done work away from the group and as part of the team. And I repeat that the relationship of every player to his national team is unique. What concerns me is the relationship he has with his club, and up to now, it's been very good."

The former Celta Vigo boss has also backed Munir to develop into an "elite player" for both Barcelona and Spain in future after earning his first cap for the national side during the break.

"It's more than benefitting me, it's about how he does for his club or country," he said of Munir's choice to represent Spain over Morocco. "He is in the process of becoming an elite player, though he's not there yet. But I can see he is very focused on the areas he needs to improve."Turning to Saturday's Camp Nou clash, Luis Enrique admits he is worried about the intense high-pressing game deployed by Athletic and has pointed to Ander Iturraspe - a player reportedly targeted by Bayern Munich during the transfer window - as decisive.

"Their strategy worries me, their pressing, their use of the ball. We'll try to play at our best for as much as possible and hopefully you'll see our virtues rather than theirs," he said.

"High pressing is what the best in the division do. It's very exciting for us to play against them. Pressure and strategy are their two main weapons. We’ll try to counter that. The players have been warned: Bilbao don’t speculate, they go out and attack and dominate many aspects of the game."[Iturraspe] is a brave player, he knows how to use the ball, when to go short or long ... I'm sure he will be coveted by other clubs in the future."

Finally, Luis Enrique admitted he does not see a favourite for the Madrid derby this weekend between champions Atletico and Champions League winners Real.
"I don't see either as stronger than the other. I want both to lose, but as that's impossible, I hope the best team wins," he added.

:cool:Diego Costa named Premier League Player of the Month for August

    454822_heroa.jpg

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been named the Prmier League's Player of the Month for August.

The Brazilian-born Spain striker lifts the award in his first month in English football, having moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid this summer.

Costa, 25, scored four goals in three matches at the start of the English campaign, including individual strikes against Burnley and Leicester City and a double against Everton in a 6-3 victory.

    goal-plystats-6fa47ca7-fa46-4b86-86c6-5b693bb74bd6.png

The striker was criticised by Everton boss Roberto Martinez following the game at Goodison on August 30 for shouting at Seamus Coleman after the Irish right-back had scored an own goal.

"I think there are certain foreign players who, when they come to the Premier League, need to understand the ethics and it's a completely different culture," he said.

He beat off competition from Chelsea team-mate Cesc Fabregas, Swansea City duo Nathan Dyer and Gylfi Sigurdsson and Aston Villa's Andreas Weimann.

But Swansea were successful in the manager's category, with Garry Monk named Manager of the Month after guiding the Welsh side to three wins from three.

The Swans kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win at Manchester United, before beating Burnley 1-0 and West Brom 3-0.

Schweinsteiger: I need time to heal

    435522_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has stressed he is easing his way back to full fitness as he needs time to heal after a hectic 2013-14.

The 30-year-old was an integral part of Germany's World Cup win this summer, but he struggled with injury throughout the preceding season as he twice required surgery on his ankle.

This time it is the newly-named Mannschaft skipper's knee which has seen him sidelined and, although Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stressed the injury is not a long-term one, the 30-year-old is not willing to risk rushing back and aggravating the issue.

"I had an operation on my ankle in June 2013, then I had to have it operated on again in December," Schweinsteiger told Welt. "After the World Cup, my body needs a little time to heal, but I'm progressing."I'm at the peak age for a footballer and I'm looking forward to the games I have ahead of me. I think I will be fully fit again in the next few weeks."

Schweinsteiger also spoke about Joachim Low naming him Philipp Lahm's successor as Germany captain and the midfielder is honoured to have been given the chance to lead his country permanently."I'm proud of it," he added. "It is a great honour for me, it means huge responsibility and obligation. Philipp did outstanding in the role and I hope to follow him well."

Bayern will be without Schweinsteiger on Saturday when they face Stuttgart in their third Bundesliga tie of 2014-15.

    Tevez: Injury rumours are rubbish

    450389_heroa.jpg

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez has revealed that rumours claiming he is unfit to face Udinese on Saturday are untrue.

Reports in Italian media claimed that coach Massimiliano Allegri would be without his star striker in his first home match in charge of the Scudetto holders after the Argentine limped out of training on Wednesday. However, Tevez - whose international exile continued this month when new Argentina coach Gerardo Martino left the forward out of his first squad - has dismissed suggestions Juve will have to fend without him this weekend as he has avoided picking up a knock.

"Thanks to those of you who expressed your concern, but I am not injured," the 30-year-old wrote on his official Twitter account. "I'm preparing myself to play on Saturday."Tevez scored 21 times for Juventus last season, forging a great partnership with fellow striker Fernando Llorente, who himself bagged 18 goals.

Allegri's men will be aiming to add to their opening day 1-0 win over Chievo against an Udinese side who also triumphed in their first clash of 2014-15.

'Casillas the best goalkeeper in Spanish football history'

    454898_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the history of Spanish football, according to Atletico Madrid's Miguel Moya.

Casillas' last two years have been turbulent on the pitch - he lost the No.1 spot during Jose Mourinho's final season, failed to usurp his replacement Diego Lopez when Carlo Ancelotti took over and made many high-profile as Spain crashed out of World Cup 2014 at the group stage.

However, he is once again the first-choice shot-stopper at the Santiago Bernabeu and his expected opposite number in Saturday's Madrid derby, Moya, claims Casillas has no match between the sticks in La Liga's history."This is the high point of my career, particularly to be playing against Iker," the Atletico goalkeeper, 30, told reporters.

"I remember when I first started aged 20. Casillas was also young at 23, but he had already played in the top flight five years. He was a goalkeeper to look up to.Furthermore, he is the best goalkeeper in the history of Spanish football.

"When you play for a team like Real Madrid you are always exposed to pressure and comments, yet Iker has been there many years and knows how to handle that. When things are going well it’s very nice, but when things don’t go well even the small details are made into a big story, sometimes when there is none.

"Last year with Diego Lopez it was a case of the Real Madrid coach having two goalkeepers of the highest level, so he had to decide between them and that’s all there is to it."

Moya suspects it will be close to call in the upcoming Madrid derby, just like the way Atletico held the reigning European champions to a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu last month in the Supercopa."We all know that anything can happen but I’m expecting something similar to the 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Supercopa, where Madrid took the initiative from the start and we had to curb their goalscoring opportunities," he added.

"Madrid have players that finish very well, yet we are also a very dangerous team in attack. If the game goes as it did in that first leg, with not many chances in general, it could be decided as it was that day, when Raul Garcia scored from a corner."Hence, strategy is going to be very important this weekend."

Friday September 12 marks the 15-year anniversary of Casillas' debut for Real Madrid and he has played 683 competitive games for the club since then, leaving him third in the Blancos' all-time list.

Crespo: Torres perfect match for AC Milan

    450766_heroa.jpg

AC Milan legend Hernan Crespo thinks that Fernando Torres will be the "perfect" striker for the club.

The Rossoneri sold their star forward, Mario Balotelli, to Liverpool this summer after an inconsistent 18-month spell at San Siro which started with a bang but ended with a whimper.

Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi replaced the Italy international with Torres on a two-year loan deal from Chelsea, where he had failed in three and a half seasons to offer a regular goal threat.

Despite his troubles at Stamford Bridge, Crespo - another player who struggled after a mega-money move early in Roman Abramovich's era - suggests that the Spaniard can provide the regular goals which Balotelli failed to offer in 2013-14.

"Technically, he is a great striker," Crespo, who currently coaches Parma's youth team, told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "He guarantees presence in the penalty area, he's fast and he attacks the space.

"Considering the midfield Milan have, Torres might just be the perfect man to fit the jigsaw puzzle."On the other hand, if you thought that Balotelli was a 25-goals-a-season striker then you had it all wrong. He has never had that continuity. He can change a game in an instant with some skill, but he can't do that every game."

Torres is expect to make his debut against Parma on Sunday as the Serie A table-toppers look to build on their opening day 3-1 win over Lazio.

:love::love::yes:Falcao & Di Maria can spark Manchester United title challenge

    454878_heroa.jpg

By the time the transfer window closed at the start of this month Manchester United promised to be a very different team to the one which had started the season so ineffectually. Their opening few matches had been pitiful. For those few hours before their players left on international duty, however, the stars briefly aligned.

Radamel Falcao posed at Carrington with his new Manchester United No. 9 shirt before departing immediately for a friendly match in Miami. Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo were added but have not yet played while Angel di Maria has, only once, in a hotch-potch team beset by concerns over form and injury. The excitement and the challenge now lie ahead.

The arrivals have been offset by the departures of a number of fringe players proven to be expendable by ineffective recent displays. Last month's 4-0 loss to MK Dons brought shame on the club. It may have come in like an avalanche but Louis van Gaal now has something resembling the squad he would have liked in the first place. It is one capable of delivering the title - provided it delivers on its potential.

"It's a case of getting the club back to where it needs to be," United coach Nicky Butt said of the £150 million transfer splurge this week at SoccerEx. "They've brought a manager who's a proven winner. He's signed a three-year deal and he's going to be here for that length of time and get the club where it needs to be - winning."

The fact that this group has been assembled in haste - and play their first match after international week - might count against Van Gaal and his players in the short term. But there is now an abundance of talent at Old Trafford and a manager who is well capable of stitching them all together and giving Manchester City and Chelsea plenty to worry about at the sharp end of the table.

The 'dilemma' of where Van Gaal is to put all these new signings and what he might do with Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj is a false one. Nobody seems to ask those questions of City or Chelsea who have two internationals in every position. It takes a squad to win the league, not only a team, and Van Gaal is well adept at rotating his options.

The Dutchman used all 23 men in his squad at the World Cup, more than any other coach. He only used the same line-up twice in succession - for the opening two matches. After that he rolled with the punches in dealing with injuries and suspensions and made tactical tweaks in the personnel he fielded. Expect the same type of dexterity on the bench at Old Trafford. Concerns that the squad is top-heavy should also be allayed by Van Gaal's previous work.

His recent Dutch team was built on a solid defence featuring Stefan de Vrij, Ron Vlaar and Bruno Martins Indi, while Daley Blind filled a number of different positions. That quartet, drilled as they were, excelled as a unit and increased their profiles, with three of the four gaining moves from the Eredivisie to higher levels after Brazil. He also let Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben improvise - the strength of the Oranje last summer - while ensuring the supporting cast carried out his instructions to the letter.

Van Gaal has always been a great improver of players. Once he settles on his back three - or four as the case may be - the unit will be forged and improved, provided the players are willing use their heads and not their instincts.

That is one key element of Van Gaal's teaching that does not yet seem to have come across to some of the United contingent.

"I always train in the brains and not in the legs," he wrote in his opening matchday programme for the visit of Swansea. "The most important thing they have to know is why we do things. A lot of players are playing intuitively - but they have to think and know why they do certain things, rather than just doing it intuitively."

Phil Jones and Tyler Blackett possess the attributes and the promise to hold down first-team slots at United in the long run and the signs suggest Van Gaal will give them time to learn their trade.

He instilled confidence in a young Netherlands squad - as he has done throughout his career - and made them believe in their abilities long after the Dutch press had decided the World Cup would be a write-off.

Van Gaal set his side out to exploit opposition weaknesses and depending on the personnel he had available to him. His forensic preparedness will be seen more once the United squad settles. There are four late signings to bed in over the coming months but no one team should be out of sight any time soon. They will probably have to beat Chelsea twice to stay in title contention but that is not beyond this manager or this group of players.

A predicted United title bid looked laughable after they lost to Swansea and MK Dons but it's looking less funny by the day.

The confidence was sucked out of Old Trafford once Gylfi Sigurdsson scored on the opening day and a general fug of discontent hung in the air. But United are now ready to unload.

Yes, they remain winless three games into the Premier League season despite playing relatively modest opposition, and the fanfare which greeted Van Gaal's arrival has long since died down. But it is not like United haven't been here before.

At the start of the 2007-08 season a team including the likes Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo took two points from a possible nine. They recovered that time, reeling off nine wins and a draw in their next 10, and eventually won the title and the Champions League.

It was a whirlwind August for Manchester United; a month which left the squad heavily altered but now better. When United take to the field on Sunday at Old Trafford against QPR it will be a brand new team. It will carry with it optimism and the opportunity for a fresh start and a reappraisal of expectation.

This is Manchester United. In more ways than one, their season starts now.

Barcelona to wear Catalan kit at Camp Nou for first time

    385218_heroa.jpg

Barcelona will wear the colours of the Catalan flag in a home fixture for the first time in their 115-year history on Saturday.

For the visit of Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, the Blaugrana have decided they will wear the yellow and red striped strip which acted as their away kit last season and is now used as their third-choice outfit. The strip, known as the ‘Senyera’ after the name of the Catalan flag which it resembles, has been a big hit with fans of the club. It has also been seen as the latest move by the club to affiliate itself with the push for Catalan independence.

For their part, Athletic will be wearing their second-choice kit of a green shirt, white shorts and red socks, which itself resembles the Basque flag known as the Ikurrina.Barcelona’s decision comes in the week of the National Day of Catalunya on September 11, but a club statement has insisted that is not the reasoning behind the change.

“The Senyera shirt is not being worn because of September 11,” the statement said. “We are doing it to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the fall of Barcelona at the hands of the troops of Phillip V and the French in 1714.”
The matchday three fixture at Camp Nou kicks off at 16:00 CET on Saturday.

'Forget it!' - Mourinho rules out Ronaldo move

    444409_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has ruled out a move for Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese forward has been linked with a move back to the Premier League with one of Chelsea and Manchester United credited as his most likely destination.

However, Mourinho batted away any suggestion of the Blues moving for 29-year-old, telling assembled journalists to "forget it" when quizzed on the topic.

Mourinho overhauled a squad that finished third last season, bringing in the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa to replace the high-profile departures of David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku.

And the 51-year-old praised the club's work in the summer transfer window: "In terms of income and the players we bought, my club did a magnificent job.

"I analysed the transfer situation early on, and after that my club did an amazing job getting the right players."
