Rodgers: I still trust Liverpool players

    455592_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident his new arrivals will settle in quick despite the setback of a 1-0 Premier League loss to Aston Villa.

Rodgers fielded six close-season signings in Saturday's defeat at Anfield but admitted his side's Champions League game against Ludogorets on Tuesday night influenced his selection.

Yet despite the defeat, with Raheem Sterling one of the players dropped to the bench, Rodgers believes his side can cope with the extra workload and insists all will have roles in the first team.

"At the beginning of the season, I've said I've got to trust all the players that I have," he told reporters."We've got a big couple of months, a really exciting couple of months coming up.Looking at it, this [Aston Villa] was a game where I felt we could do that.

"If [Sterling] didn't have international football then it would have been a different case. He came on, he was bright. He's a big player for us."We've built a squad here so that I trust all the players. As a team and a squad we just didn't deliver. [Sterling] will certainly play on Tuesday night."

Home debutants Luzar Markovic, Adam Lallana and Mario Balotelli failed to make the difference against Villa as a front three but Rodgers pointed to the 3-0 win at Tottenham - Balotelli's debut - as evidence the new arrivals will click.

"We played against Tottenham and we were outstanding," he continued."The players that we've brought in are very good players. We're delighted with that. We just failed to open them up."

Inter 7-0 Sassuolo: Icardi gets three as Mazzarri's men demolish visitors

    455822_heroa.jpg

Mauro Icardi scored a hat-trick as Inter registered their first Serie A victory of the season in a 7-0 humiliation of Sassuolo on Sunday.

Both Inter and Sassuolo drew their opening fixtures, but the win never looked in doubt for the home side after Icardi netted his first in the fourth minute at San Siro.
Mateo Kovacic played a key role in setting up the opener and got his own name on the scoresheet in the 21st minute.Icardi curled home a superb third after 30 minutes and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo's first league goal for Inter made it 4-0 at the interval.

The hat-trick was complete in the 53rd minute when Icardi smashed in a left-footed strike before Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi saw red for an elbow on Juan Jesus.Osvaldo scored his second to make it six in the 72nd minute and Fredy Guarin completed the rout two minutes later.

The result comes almost exactly 12 months after Inter hammered Sassuolo by the same scoreline on the road last season.Marco Andreolli took the place of the suspended Nemanja Vidic in the Inter defence, while Osvaldo joined Icardi in attack. And it did not take long for the home side to break the deadlock, with Icardi bundling the ball home in the fourth minute.

Kovacic tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area, but his shot deflected into the path of Icardi, who eventually found a way past Andrea Consigli after the debutant goalkeeper saved his initial effort.

Berardi's deflected cross just evaded Nicola Sansone as Sassuolo chased an equaliser, and they were swiftly punished for that squandered opportunity.

Kovacic, who scored his first goals for Inter with a hat-trick in the 6-0 Europa League win over Stjarnan last month, opened his Serie A account when he slid the ball past the advancing Consigli with the outside of his boot in the 21st minute.
And the goals just kept on coming for the home side as Inter surged 3-0 ahead.Icardi picked up the ball just outside the box on the half-hour mark and had time to compose himself before curling into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Osvaldo then made it four before half-time, side-footing home from six yards after Consigli had denied Dodo. The on-loan Southampton striker could have put Inter five up three minutes into the second half, but sent his effort narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

However, Icardi netted his third soon after – powering home after getting on the end of a Kovacic throughball.Sassuolo's dismal display got even worse when one of their main goal threats – Berardi – saw red for an inexcusable off-the-ball elbow on Juan.

Guarin then came off the bench to tee up Osvaldo for his second in the 72nd minute before the goalscorer turned provider as the Colombian fired in an effort off the post soon after.

    Icardi: Everything went Inter's way

    455837_heroa.jpg

Mauro Icardi says he is thrilled after scoring a hat-trick in Inter's 7-0 annihilation of Sassuolo on Sunday and believes everything went his side's way in the game.

The 21-year-old opened the scoring early on before adding two more to his tally, while Pablo Osvaldo scored twice and Mateo Kovacic and Fredy Guarin capped off a fine display.

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri insisted the side's performance was "ideal" but the star of the show maintains that, while he is happy with the display, they must keep on improving."I'm very happy to have scored a hat-trick, it makes me even more pleased that I have scored it in front of our fans," he told Sky Sport Italia. "It went well with my partnership with Osvaldo, but we are aware that we still have to work hard to improve.

"But the thing that should stand out is that the team played well, we were able to immediately unlock them and everything went our way."The striker was then asked about his Sassuolo counterpart, Simone Zaza - with whom he played at Sampdoria - and the Argentine believes he deserved his recent call-up to the Italy national team.

"I've known him since the days of Sampdoria and in my view he deserved to be called by Conte," concluded Icardi.

That is exactly how Inter should play - Mazzarri

    455882_heroa.jpg

Walter Mazzarri says the kind of football Inter played in their 7-0 annihilation of Sassuolo is exactly the style he wants to see from them.

The Nerazzurri strolled to victory on Sunday, with Mauro Icardi scoring a hat-trick while Pablo Osvaldo scored two and Mateo Kovacic and Fredy Guarin both found the net.Mazzarri was elated with his side's performance as he spoke after the match, describing the display as "ideal football".

“We ended last season with this style of football, but a few players have changed," he told Sky Sport Italia. "I said during the week that the wide midfielders had to push forward quickly and be aggressive, as that is the football I like to play.
"Playing in this way and with this tempo is ideal football in my view. We hope to continue like this."We want to keep this attitude, determination and aggression on the field. We must be fast, move the ball around quickly and not give our opponents time to think."

Mateo Kovacic had another good display and played a crucial role in the opening goal and Mazzarri is happy with the way the Croatian is developing. He continued: "For a while now he has understood how to play in Italy, so he defends and attacks when needed, covering runs, going to get the ball and pressuring opponents.

"Medel was also fantastic and to attack with six players we need someone like him to protect the defence - he provides balance."If the entire team plays this way and contributes, then we can use this system against the biggest clubs. I’m sorry we keep beating them 7-0, but Sassuolo are a very good side!

"I'm optimistic this year because many of the players have already known me for a year and so they have a better concept of my ideas. The lads are motivated and I am convinced this side has the right spirit.”

Napoli 0-1 Chievo: Maxi Lopez fires visitors to victory

    455851_heroa.jpg

Napoli’s first home game of the season ended in disappointment as they were beaten 1-0 by Chievo on Sunday. Maxi Lopez was the goalscorer, but it was ‘keeper Francesco Bardi who produced the match-winning display.

After an opening day defeat to champions Juventus, Chievo coach Eugenio Corini went for a more defensive formation in an attempt to stifle and frustrate Napoli, who for this match were clad in their new denim-style second kit. And after 90 minutes, Napoli were left feeling decidedly blue.

There may have been a last minute winner on the opening day for coach Rafael Benitez and his men away to Genoa a fortnight ago. But there was to be no dramatic repeat today, the visitors taking all three points almost entirely due to the excellence of Bardi.Keeping Napoli and their fans quiet may have been Corini’s intention, but it had little effect during the opening period as Napoli pressed throughout the half.

Gonzalo Higuain and Gokhan Inler found space behing the Chievo backline and it took a desperate block from defender Bostjan Cesar to deny Jose Callejon.

Lorenzo Insigne, predominantly down the left, was the main instigator for the home team and after 12 minutes he picked out Higuain’s run, his first time header producing a fine save from Bardi.Three minutes later, the 22-year-old goalkeeper - on loan from Inter - again saved well from Marek Hamsik's angled shot, again played in by Insigne, who decided to pose a threat himself a little later from long range, only to see his shot go narrowly wide.

Higuain passed up on a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the 26th minute from the penalty spot, Cesar collected a yellow card for tripping the Argentine striker as he dribbled into the box.

In this his 50th game for the club, Higuain elected to take the kick himself, but while he struck the ball with power, Bardi pulled off a brilliant save going to his right to keep the scoreline blank.

On the half-hour mark, and completely against the flow, Chievo went within the width of the crossbar from taking the lead when the unmarked Lopez latched on to a through ball, sending his flick off the goal frame.

That was only light relief for the visitors, for minutes later Italy Under-21 international Bardi again came to his side’s rescue when he blocked Insigne’s attempted volley with the outside of his right boot. And, yet again, in the closing seconds of the half, Higuain’s snapshot was matched by the agile keeper.

Much to the frustration of the locals, Bardi's great performance continued into the second half as he launched himself high to his left to keep out Camilo Zuniga’s long-range drive.

Having survived for so long, Chievo took a shock lead after 49 minutes. Hitting on the break after stopping another Napoli raid, the ball eventually reached Lopez , who clipped his shot, via a slight deflection, above and beyond the diving and previously untroubled Rafael. With 64 minutes gone, substitute Dries Mertens' pass in from the left found Hamsik in space inside the box, but even though he went for placement over power, it still drew a fantastic save from Bardi, who then parried speculative, swerving drives from Inler and Higuain.

Despite the increase in pressure, Chievo were able to hold onto their lead, with Bardi finishing the game with a wonderful stop four minutes into stoppage time to deny Zapata.

    Pogba: Juventus talks under way

    455741_heroa.jpg

Paul Pogba has confirmed he is in talks with Juventus about extending his current deal with the Serie A champions. The France international has become a key component of the Juve midfield since joining the club from Manchester United in 2012.

Pogba's impressive performances for the Turin giants reportedly attracted attention from a number of Europe's top clubs, with Paris Saint-Germain said to be the main candidates to lure him away from Italy, while a return to United was repeatedly rumoured in the summer. However, the 21-year-old's latest revelations mean any move now seems less likely unless negotiations break down before the winter transfer window.

"We are in negotiations for a contract renewal with Juventus," the midfielder told TF1. "I will soon have a meeting with the board of directors."I have the arrogance of a born winner."

Pogba's current deal runs until summer 2016, but Juve are said to be keen on extending the agreement for a further three years.

:love::love:Manchester United 4-0 QPR: Di Maria inspires first win for Van Gaal

    455873_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria shone on his Old Trafford debut as Manchester United secured their first win of the season against a disappointing QPR.

Di Maria opened the scoring midway through the first half as his left-footed free-kick evaded everyone and beat Rob Green to his right.

Ander Herrera doubled the advantage following a pass by Wayne Rooney, and the duo combined again as the new club captain made it 3-0 before half-time.

    i

Juan Mata made it four after Di Maria's wayward shot found him free in the area before Radamel Falcao was denied a debut goal of his own by Green late on.

Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind were handed starting berths by Van Gaal, while Falcao, who moved to Old Trafford on a season-long loan from Monaco on transfer deadline day, was joined by fellow new recruit Luke Shaw on the bench.

United, whose emphatic triumph ensured QPR defender Rio Ferdinand endured a miserable return to his former club, made a fast start to proceedings and threatened in the seventh minute when Mata shot well over the crossbar from the edge of the area.

QPR, with Sandro and Niko Kranjcar in their team for the first time since the duo's deadline-day moves, appeared to have weathered the storm as some of the early intensity vanished from United's play, but in the 24th minute Van Gaal's men found the breakthrough their dominance of possession merited.

Clint Hill was penalised for a foul on Herrera and visiting goalkeeper Green was beaten as an inswinging free-kick from Di Maria evaded everyone and crept into the bottom-left corner.

United had clear control of the encounter but Harry Redknapp's side were almost gifted an equaliser in the 31st minute by David de Gea.

The Spaniard rushed off his line in an attempt to clear a long ball forward and was grateful for a diving block from Jonny Evans that prevented Matt Phillips from scoring.

    i

QPR were given a mountain to climb 10 minutes before half-time when former Athletic Bilbao man Herrera drove a low strike beyond the despairing Green to double United's lead.

Di Maria was heavily involved in the goal, surging down the left wing before slipping a neat pass into Rooney, who laid the ball off for Herrera to open his account after the England striker had seen his initial shot blocked.

Rooney effectively ended the game as a contest in the 44th minute, rounding off a neat move involving Herrera and Mata with a powerful finish.

Redknapp threw on Armand Traore for the unimpressive Hill at half-time and the move almost paid instant dividends as the substitute pulled the ball back for Kranjcar to bring a fine save from De Gea.

Yet QPR could not prevent United adding further gloss to a superb display. A cross-shot from Di Maria cut out three players and left Mata with the simple task of firing high into the net from close range.

Falcao was brought on to rapturous applause from the home supporters, yet it was one of QPR's debutants that almost cut the deficit, striker Eduardo Vargas firing narrowly wide after being played through down the right-hand side.

A glittering showing from Di Maria came to an end as he was withdrawn with an apparent case of cramp before the Old Trafford crowd end were denied a fitting end to an encouraging afternoon when Falcao was thwarted by Green, who also saved from replacement Adnan Januzaj in the 90th minute.

Parma 4-5 AC Milan: Two sent off as Rossoneri edge nine-goal thriller

    455995_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Menez scored twice as AC Milan beat Parma 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller on Sunday night, which ended with both sides reduced to 10 men.Giacomo Bonaventura opened the scoring on his Milan debut before Antonio Cassano levelled with a goal against his old club.

Keisuke Honda and a Menez penalty put Milan back in the driving seat before the break but they were pegged back early in the second half as Felipe fired home from close range.Daniele Bonera's sending off just before the hour gave Parma a way back into the match but it was Milan who struck next through Nigel de Jong.

Remarkably, there was further drama to come as Alessandro Lucarelli netted for the home side, Felipe was given his marching orders and Menez scored again to make it 5-3.And to cap it all off, Mattia De Sciglio scored a farcical own goal from around 30 yards out as Diego Lopez failed to control the defender's backpass.

All of which leaves Roberto Donadoni's men still looking for their first point.
The visitors, who were without new signing Fernando Torres due to a sprained ankle, made a positive start to the game with Ignazio Abate and Honda causing problems down the right.

And they got their rewards when Bonaventura converted from Honda's pass in the 25th minute, allowing the ball to go through his own legs before firing back across Antonio Mirante.Milan's lead lasted just two minutes, though, as Cassano came back to haunt his former club.

The 32-year-old striker ghosted into the area to meet a left-wing cross from Cristobal Jorquera and head beyond Lopez from six yards.

Inzaghi's men regained the lead in the 37th minute as Abate once again made a nuisance of himself, this time delivering perfectly for Honda to nod in his second goal of the campaign. And in first-half stoppage time the visitors netted a third goal after being awarded a penalty for a foul by Lucarelli on Menez.Having dusted himself down the France international duly converted the spot-kick to make Inzaghi's half-time team talk much easier.

Parma came out with renewed vigour after the break and were rewarded on 51 minutes when Felipe met a skewed Jorquera shot and volleyed the ball home at the back post.

Seven minutes later Milan's task became tougher with the dismissal of Bonera after he picked up a second yellow card for blocking a Jorquera shot with his hand.
Rather than buckle under the pressure Milan came roaring back through De Jong, the Netherlands international racing clear to calmly slot past Mirante.Jorquera picked up his third assist of the day in the 73rd minute as the hosts refused to lie down, this time Lucarelli rising unmarked to power a header beyond Lopez from a right-wing corner.

However, Parma's momentum disappeared when Felipe received his second yellow after catching Menez late with 77 minutes gone. The Frenchman made him pay two minutes later as his cheeky back heel added to the glut of goals.

With full-time approaching the game had its ninth and final goal, De Sciglio's pass somehow eluding his goalkeeper, who appeared to pull a muscle as he let the ball skid past him and into the net.

    Menez revels in two-goal display

    456027_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Menez was delighted to score twice as AC Milan edged a nine-goal thriller 5-4 against Parma on Sunday.

The France international added to his strike on the opening weekend of the season with a first-half penalty and an audacious back heel late in the game to seal victory.
Having touched the ball past Antonio Mirante the forward chased along the goalline before executing an outlandish effort that flummoxed the Parma goalkeeper.

Menez moved to Italy after a frustrating season with Paris Saint-Germain last term and flourished in a central attacking role in place of the injured Fernando Torres at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

However, he acknowledged Milan must do better defensively in the weeks ahead if they are improve on a disappointing eighth place finish in 2013/14."We played a good game and ran a few too many risks, as we had the initiative throughout and the four goals we conceded were a little strange," he told Sky Sport Italia. "In the end it's the win that counts.

"The team showed courage and never let go. I am trying to do all I can and help the team. Tonight we suffered a lot too and must work on that."I feel good, this team and the coach helped me a great deal and I am happy at Milan."

Milan's win sees them keep the early pace with Juventus and Roma, with the defending champions next up for Inzaghi's men at San Siro.

:yes:Van Gaal: Manchester United can get much better

    455968_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes his side can still improve despite Sunday's 4-0 Premier League victory over QPR.

The hugely influential Angel Di Maria scored on his home debut as United ended the wait for a first competitive win under the Dutchman in style, with Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata also on the scoresheet.

Radamel Falcao, who completed a season-long loan move from Monaco on transfer deadline day, was introduced as a second-half substitute for his first appearance in a United shirt, while Van Gaal fielded two other new faces, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, from the start.

And although Van Gaal was impressed with the manner in which QPR were dispatched, he remains keen to see more from a United side that has been rebuilt following a disappointing seventh-place finish last season.

"When you have a result of 4-0 then you can be happy as a coach but you always have points you can improve," said the 63-year-old.

"I am very happy because of the result and the way we have played. We were very dominant and scored goals and kept a clean sheet.

"In ball possession I think we have lost the ball too much previously. We were more direct and that I like.

"Also, we have created a lot of chances, although we didn't score enough of them.

"We have always to analyse what we have done. The result is fantastic but we can get much better. This is a good start."

I'm angry and happy - Inzaghi

    451092_heroa.jpg

Filippo Inzaghi revealed how he was both "angry and happy" with his players after AC Milan beat Parma 5-4 on Sunday.Giacomo Bonaventura put the Rossoneri in front on his debut before Antonio Cassano levelled against his former employers.

Keisuke Honda and a Jeremy Menez penalty then made it 3-1, but Felipe pulled a goal back for the home side to put them back in the game, while they were further boosted by the dismissal of Daniele Bonera after the break.

However, Nigel de Jong then seemingly put Milan out of reach at 4-2, yet incredibly there was more drama still to follow. Alessandro Lucarrelli scored for Parma, who then had Felipe sent off, as Menez struck for a second time to make it 5-3.

Mattia De Sciglio scored an own goal late on to put the hosts within touching distance of a late comeback, but Milan held on to the delight of Inzaghi, despite his obvious concerns over his side's defence.

"I am angry yes, but we must be very happy as well," he said. "This is an amazing group, let's not forget where we are from. The boys have an amazing spirit and despite our defensive errors the fans should be very pleased."It would be a shame if we hadn't won the game, we were always in the lead. Our goals came from amazing combinations."

The win makes it two wins out of two for Milan at the start of new season, but Inzaghi was quick to dismiss the prospect of his side challenging for the title, despite admitting they are more than capable of beating the reigning champions next week.

He added: "They are a team that is out of reach. We have a lot to learn but in a one-off game at San Siro, who knows? With enthusiasm and quality we can make it. Difficult times will come but I trust the team, we have incredible spirit. For now we should enjoy being in good company at the top of the table."

Iniesta: We always expect the best of Messi & Neymar

    455426_heroa.jpg

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta says his side can always count on Lionel Messi and Neymar to settle matches in their favour.

The Catalans have won all three of their games so far this season, including a 2-0 triumph over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday thanks to two lates goals from the Brazilian.

Luis Enrique's side were made to work hard for victory but Iniesta believes the presence of the two South American stars within the squad means Barca are always a threat in the final third.

"We're talking about two unique players who have unending talent," he is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo."We can always expect the very best from both of them."Iniesta has captained Barca in all three Liga games this term, with club skipper Xavi left on the bench, but the 30-year-old feels his long-time team-mate will have a role to play.

"Fortunately we have players of a very high level to compete. Seasons are long and there are many games, and a team who wish to be champions need them all."Iniesta says he is happy with the start of Barca's season after their perfect record in the opening stages.

"Every season and every stage is different. In this one, we have new people, a new coach and we're doing different things. We're just trying to carry them out on the pitch. The sensations are good."

New Man Utd stars bring the best out of Rooney

    455892_heroa.jpg

While it was the highly anticipated debut appearances of Radamel Falcao, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo and the presence of British record signing Angel Di Maria that attracted most attention, Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney also shone in their 4-0 win over QPR on Sunday.

The striker led his new-look team to their first Premier League victory of the season, scoring a landmark goal in the process.

The 28-year-old was heavily involved as the Red Devils' front four interchanged well in a game the home side dominated against a limited QPR side.

Di Maria might be the one who steals the headlines with some impressive passes and a goal from a free-kick, but United stalwart Rooney was in impressive form, scoring once and assisting another as Louis van Gaal's side romped to victory.

However, it is no coincidence that a bright display from Rooney coincides with the emergence of so many new signings, as it was the fresh faces in the team who helped to bring out the best in the striker.

Much has been made of where Rooney will play following the arrivals of Di Maria and Falcao, but he made a telling contribution to justify his starting spot.

    455941_heroa.jpg

It was the England international who put the game out of the visitors' reach just before half-time as he drove home United’s third goal of the game after good work from Ander Herrera and Juan Mata. The forward collected the ball on the edge of the box and had time to turn before firing home a clinical strike past Rob Green and low into the corner.

The goal was his 175th in the Premier League, putting him third on the all-time goalscorer charts, level with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

That finish was the pinnacle of his performance, but it was just one of many positive contributions from the captain.

Rooney was also involved in United’s second of the game. The striker was played in brilliantly by Di Maria and, although his initial shot was blocked, he managed to slip the ball through to Herrera to drill home.

In truth, it was a comfortable afternoon for Rooney, although he did have the chance to score a second shortly after half-time. The skipper managed to get on the end of a tame Mata shot just yards from goal, however, he could not quite sort his feet out and the chance, albeit a difficult one, went begging.

Despite being named club captain following Nemanja Vidic’s departure, Rooney's position at United has come under close scrutiny following their summer spending spree.

Although he has inherited the armband there have been suggestions Rooney could move into midfield, or even find himself on the bench to accommodate Falcao. However, it was the new boy who was forced to start the game on the sidelines with Rooney leading his team out and adding to his impressive recent statistics. The skipper has now scored or assisted 15 times in his last 20 Premier League games for United.

He did, though, have to accommodate for the Colombian forward when he arrived on 69 minutes to replace Mata, with Rooney dropping into the No.10 position.

Indeed another influential display by Rooney, with the captain leading by example, suggests Robin van Persie could be more at risk from the arrival of new signing Falcao.

    'Balotelli is no Ibrahimovic'

    442469_heroa.jpg

Sampdoria striker Stefano Okaka says Mario Balotelli lacked the maturity displayed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his time at AC Milan after departing the club for Liverpool. The Italy star has endured a controversy-ridden career which has already taken in spells at Inter, Manchester City, Milan and now the Reds, with his latest move coming just 18 months on from his arrival at San Siro.

The 24-year-old ended his Rossoneri career with a respectable tally of 26 goals in 43 games but came under scrutiny as Milan finished in a desperately disappointing eighth position in Serie A last season, before making his exit in August.Balotelli has now been branded a "failure" by Sampdoria's Okaka, who claims the striker lacked the maturity to take responsibility, unlike Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his time with the Italian giants.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "Is the fact Balotelli left Serie A for England a failure for our football? No, if anything he is the one who failed. Does he think great champions were never under pressure? When Ibrahimovic was in Italy, he scored 30 goals per season."He mustn't keep looking to blame others. Mario is a great player, but if he had problems in Italy then half the responsibility is his.

"At times in life you need to stop and look inside yourself. The fact remains he is a great player and this new English experience might help him rediscover the hunger he once had."

Van Gaal: Manchester United's season starts now

    455032_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal told his players that Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing of QPR was “a new start” for the team.

United were rampant at Old Trafford, with goals from Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata destroying Harry Redknapp’s side, in a match where Radamel Falcao, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind all made their debuts.

The result is Van Gaal’s first competitive victory in charge of the club, and after a testing start to his tenure the Dutchman informed his squad that their season commences now.

He said post-match: “I said to the players, we have to make a new start, today. We start now. I now have my selection, 27 players. These will be our players for the season.

“We made four goals, and in spite of our loss against Swansea and the draws [against Sunderland & Burnley], we were the better team but we failed to make goals. Today we made goals and created chances. I’m very happy with the goals and in the second half we had a lot of chances."

Van Gaal switched his formation to a 4-4-2, with his back line consisting of Rafael, Jonny Evans, Tyler Blackett and Rojo, but said that the decision to move from his regular 3-5-2 had been forced upon him due to injury.

He added: “I could hardly play with five defenders because [Chris] Smalling and [Phil] Jones were injured. I would have to have played a right-footed player on the right of defence.

“I was forced to play four defenders, but I know that the quality of the players allowed me to play this way.”

Van Gaal also underlined the club’s targets for the campaign ahead, stating: “Our purpose is to be in the first three, because we have to qualify for the Champions League. But the most important thing is the trajectory. We are building a process and we have to play in a certain style and we have to improve.

“At the end, I hope to be manager of the champions of the Premier League, if not this year, or next year, but I want to give the title to the fans.”

Finally the former Netherlands boss addressed the issue of how his players communicate on the pitch, with the introduction of a Spanish-speaking contingent to the club.

“All the players are learning English,” he confirmed.

“I can speak Spanish so sometimes it’s better to communicate sometimes in Spanish, but they will learn within a year they [the squad] will learn to speak English.”
