Arsenal blow as Debuchy faces up to three months out

    456305_heroa.jpg

Mathieu Debuchy is set to be sidelined for up to three months with ankle ligament damage, Goal can reveal.

Arsenal received the Frenchman's scan results on Monday night after the swelling had subsided on the ankle injury he sustained against Manchester City on Saturday.

Goal understands that Debuchy has been diagnosed with a grade three ankle sprain, the most severe type that involves a tear of the ligament.

Although there will be relief that the France international has not broken a bone, he is expected to be sidelined for between eight to 12 weeks.

It is a huge blow for Arsene Wenger, whose already meagre defensive resources have now been further weakened.

With deputy right-back Calum Chambers struggling with tonsillitis, Wenger is ready to turn to another rookie, Hector Bellerin, for Tuesday's Champions League group opener against 2013 runners-up Borussia Dortmund.

Bellerin, 19, who is yet to make his full Arsenal debut, is part of the travelling party that arrived in Dortmund on Monday evening.

Debuchy is the latest long-term absentee for Arsenal, along with Theo Walcott (knee) and Olivier Giroud, who is out until at least November with a broken foot.

It leaves Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Kieran Gibbs as the only fit senior defenders in the Gunners squad.

Nacho Monreal will miss the Dortmund match with a back injury but is expected to be available for the weekend trip to Aston Villa.

Wenger had said earlier on Monday he was unsure of the length of Debuchy's absence as he awaited the player's scan results but admitted his resources are stretched.

Wenger said: "In defence the Debuchy injury puts us a little bit in a situation where we do not want more. Hopefully we will have good news after he has a scan and that he will be back soon.

"We have Chambers who can play in different positions, Monreal can play centre back and we also have Bellerin who I think is now ready to play."

Jardim looks to Berbatov and Carvalho

    447297_heroa.jpg

Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim has pointed to the experience of Dimitar Berbatov and Ricardo Carvalho as potentially crucial factor as his side prepare to face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

The Ligue 1 club make their return to European competition after finishing runners-up in the French top flight last term, but find themselves severely weakened following the departure of two key men.

James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao both left for Real Madrid and Manchester United respectively over the summer, with Jardim's men subsequently picking up just four points from their first five league games.

The Portuguese coach - who replaced Claudio Ranieri at the end of last season - has now urged the senior members of his squad to take responsibility ahead of their Group C encounter with Leverkusen. He said: "The project has changed but everyone continues to work with the same attitude and convictions.

"We have to find a balance between youth and experience."We have three of four experienced players in this competition, Berbatov, Toulalan and Ricardo Carvalho, who will help the others."

Toulalan was part of Malaga's 2012/13 squad who took Europe by surprise after reaching the quarter-finals despite losing the likes of Salomon Rondon and Santi Cazorla that same summer, and the Frenchman is looking to use that experience as a source of inspiration."A lot has happened at the club recently but we are staying focused," he said. "This game could give us a bit of fresh air. We fight all year for those European places so we want to go as far as possible.

"The current situation reminds me of Malaga a couple of years ago when a great Champions League run helped our form in the league. We need to win to get our confidence back."

Monreal out & Chambers doubtful ahead of Arsenal's clash with Dortmund

    441003_heroa.jpg

Nacho Monreal will miss Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening, while Calum Chambers is a doubt.

Arsene Wenger is already without Mathieu Debuchy after the right-back suffered an ankle injury during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Monreal did not travel to Germany due to a back problem but is set to return for Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Chambers, meanwhile, is suffering from tonsillitis and Wenger admits it is “50-50” whether the 19-year-old will be fit to face Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Should Chambers fail to recover in time, 19-year-old Hector Bellerin is expected to start at right-back.

When asked if his options at the back are stretched, Wenger replied: “In defence, yes, of course the Debuchy injury puts us in a position where we don’t want more. Hopefully we'll have good news after his scan today.

“We have Chambers who can come in different positions, Monreal can play at centre-back, we have as well Bellerin, who I think is ready to play.”

    Prandelli rallies Galatasaray support

    456251_heroa.jpg

Cesare Prandelli has called on Galatasaray's fans to get behind the team in their Champions League opener with Anderlecht on Tuesday.

After departing his post as Italy head coach following their disappointing World Cup group-stage exit, Prandelli took over from compatriot Roberto Mancini, tasked with regaining the Turkish Super Lig title from fierce rivals Fenerbahce.
Prandelli will also be keen to prove his credentials in Europe, although Galatasaray have been dealt a tough draw, with Arsenal and 2012-13 runners-up Borussia Dortmund also placed in Group D.

A strong start to the group phase is therefore essential for Galatasaray, who reached the second round last season before being knocked out by Chelsea, and Prandelli wants the vociferous home faithful to add their usual fervent support on Tuesday."We might fall behind during the game," he said. "Our fans should always be backing us as we are stronger with them.

"We'll try to get three points with the help of our fans."Belgian champions Anderlecht have been touted as the outsiders of the group, but Prandelli is refusing to take Besnik Hasi's men lightly.

"Let's not call Anderlecht the weakest team in the group," he said. "Let's say the youngest."Just because they have played more matches than us [in their domestic league], we won't have any fear of them."We'll play against an organised, very young and interesting team. They will be ambitious to impress. Therefore we need to be careful."

The visitors are seven games into the Belgian Pro League season and sit top of the table, still unbeaten, while Galatasaray have taken four points from two Turkish Super Lig matches to also occupy the summit.

Olympiakos most difficult test - Simeone

    455684_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone says Atletico Madrid will face their most difficult test in Champions League Group A when they take on Olympiakos in Greece on Tuesday.

The Greek Super League champions won 16 of their 17 league fixtures at home last season, as well as defeating Manchester United in the first leg of their last-16 European tie before exiting the competition after a second leg defeat.

Atleti finished runners-up themselves in the competition last term, but Simeone pointed out just how tough a proposition Olympiakos could prove to be.He said: "Tomorrow morning we will decide the starting lineup. This will probably be the most difficult game in the group; Olympiakos have a very strong home record and passionate fans. We had a great season last year. But that's in the past. We are starting from scratch again. We are building the team day by day."

The Argentine is familiar with Olympiakos boss Michel having come up against him during his playing days and was quick to praise him for giving his side an identifiable style of play."I''ve played against Míchel as a player and coach," he added.

"Míchel had a great run with Olympiakos in the Champions league. He's succeeded in giving Olympiakos a distinct style and character. He has put his stamp on the team."

Bendtner: I wasted a year at Arsenal

    456145_heroa.jpg

Nicklas Bendtner has criticised Arsenal after claiming that his final season at the club was a "waste of a year".

The 26-year-old made just 12 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side last term before leaving on a free transfer in the summer.

Bendtner was loaned out to Juventus in August 2012 but failed to score during his time with the Serie A champions after his campaign was disrupted by a thigh injury.

Bendtner returned to Arsenal last summer after Juve opted not to make the loan move permanent but was close to joining Crystal Palace before Wenger opted to keep the Denmark international at the Emirates Stadium.

“I was loaned to Juve. It went well there. I played regularly, and I was fit. Then I got injured, had to miss the next six months,” Bendtner told Bild.

“We were champions, I wanted to stay. But Arsenal took me back. I wasted a year there. That annoys me the most.”

Bendtner completed a move to Wolfsburg earlier this summer but has not secured a starting place in the club’s opening three Bundesliga games.

“Wolfsburg is obviously different. But it’s not bad here. And if I want a larger city, one is by train in an hour in Berlin. There I have many friends,” said the striker.

“I miss my son. If I have a day off, I will always try to travel to London to spend time with him. London is my city, I lived there since I was 16.

“Of course, I also miss my friends. But the VfL is my new beginning. The important thing now is football. Life comes afterwards.”

Vidal and Pirlo to miss Malmo clash

    435789_heroa.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri confirmed Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo will miss Juventus' Champions League clash with Malmo because of their injuries.

Chile international Vidal missed Juve's 2-0 Serie A victory over Udinese on Saturday with a persistent knee problem, while midfield partner Pirlo sustained a hamstring injury at the end of August.

Coach Allegri revealed that Vidal could return in time for the Serie A champions' clash with AC Milan on Saturday and Pirlo's fitness is set to be assessed at the end of this week."We hope to have Arturo Vidal back with us for Milan on Saturday," Allegri said at his pre-match news conference. "Pirlo's coming on well. He'll up his workload and we'll give him another look over at the end of the week."

Centre-back Giorgio Chiellini is set to feature after missing the start of the domestic season through a combination of suspension and a calf complaint. And the Italy international is itching to get involved, saying: "I'm in good shape and available for tomorrow's game.

"There's plenty of enthusiasm in the camp and around Turin. We want to do well in the Champions League

Milan goalkeeper Lopez to miss Juve clash

    444197_heroa.jpg

AC Milan goalkeeper Diego Lopez has been ruled out for two weeks after sustaining a thigh injury in Sunday's thrilling 5-4 win at Parma.

The Spaniard suffered the injury in farcical circumstances, mis-controlling a backpass from Mattia De Sciglio and then pulling up as he attempted, unsuccessfully, to prevent the ball from trickling over the line.Brazilian defender Alex had to be withdrawn shortly after the hour mark at the Stadio Ennio Tardini to be replaced by Cristian Zapata. His status for the weekend clash with the defending champions at San Siro remains uncertain.

A Milan statement read: "AC Milan communicates the following updates regarding the injuries to Diego Lopez and Alex following the match with Parma."The goalkeeper suffered a right thigh injury. He will be evaluated in a couple of weeks.

"The defender meanwhile is struggling with bruising to a muscle in his right thigh.
"In the following days there will be further tests to determine the prognosis."The victory made it two wins from two for new coach Filippo Inzaghi, whose side sit top of the table.

Real Madrid must win to make things right - James

    456193_heroa.jpg

James Rodriguez says Real Madrid must beat Basel in their opening Champions League match in order to recover from their poor start to the season.

The European champions have won just one of their opening five competitive matches of the campaign, most recently losing 2-1 to local rivals Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.Rodriguez insists he is not worried about his side's poor start to the season, but stresses they must beat the Swiss club in Madrid on Tuesday."You have to play hard and start winning in the Champions League," he told reporters. "We have a great opportunity to win and set everything right.

"Things develop day by day and you can't look back. We have to win tomorrow.
"We started badly, but we have the players to get out of this situation. It's just the start. It will be a tough match."They have good players but we will go out to win, be strong and push them out. We are at home and we must respect that.

"We had no luck against Atlético de Madrid [on Saturday]. We had clear chances to score but we didn't do it. We must improve on that."

Pedro: Xavi is a living legend

    456103_heroa.jpg

Barcelona forward Pedro has hailed the importance of "living legend" Xavi despite his scaled down role in the first team.

The 34-year-old has played only 17 minutes this season over three La Liga matches, with summer signing Ivan Rakitic chosen ahead of him to start alongside Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets in midfield.

Pedro stressed that his reduced gametime does not diminish Xavi's importance behind the scenes, while claiming that his own lack of goals in 2014-15 does not concern him at the moment."Xavi is a living legend of Barca," he told reporters in a press conference on Monday. "He is the captain in the locker room and his words and presence has weight.

"He's at peace with his situation. He will still be a major player for us this season.
"Myself, I am missing goals this season but I'm confident that they will come. The important thing is to keep creating chances."Xavi could get a chance to stretch his legs at Camp Nou on Wednesday when Barca host Apoel in the Champions League and Pedro already has his sights set on European glory in 2014-15.

"Each year we strive to reach the final of the Champions League," he added. "We look forward to getting underway this week and we hope we can win the title.
"Apoel will be tough opponents as they are champions of Cyprus."

Casillas is my No.1, end of discussion - Ancelotti

    444034_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that Iker Casillas is his Real Madrid No.1 and is refusing to consider otherwise.

Last season, the club captain was used in cup competitions - the Champions League and Copa del Rey - while Diego Lopez played in goal in La Liga.Lopez was sold this summer to AC Milan, however, with Levante and Costa Rica shot-stopper Keylor Navas brought in as competition for Casillas but so far he has been restricted to the bench.

Casillas was whistled at by sections of the Santiago Bernabeu in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to title rivals Atletico Madrid, and has been subject to intense scrutiny by pundits, but Ancelotti became irritated when asked if Navas would be given a chance to shine instead.

"The discussion of who our team's goalkeeper should be does not exist," he told reporters ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash at home to Basel. "I will not feed the debate going on in the media and online.

"The debate is closed for me, I want to be clear on that. Debates on who should play for my team do not exist."I will never speak of which goalkeeper I play this season."Casillas has experience and character so he knows how to react to get through a situation like being whistled."

Despite back-to-back defeats and only one win in five competitive matches this season, Ancelotti believes he has the strongest squad on the continent and intends to fix the issues which are frustrating the Champions League holders in 2014-15."The quality of this team is the best in Europe," the Italian added. "No player is in doubt about being here, everyone's happy to be playing for Madrid.

"I feel that, as a coach, my job is to fix things that are wrong with the team, as happened last year. Every game can be positive if you show a reaction."I think the problem is we need more consistency over 90 minutes. We need maximum concentration and to focus on small details.

"On the fitness side of things, we need more time to get our players into the best shape possible. Some players arrived on August 5 and need time to train."

Falcao thanks Manchester United fans after 'fantastic' debut

    456255_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao has thanked Manchester United fans for their support and admits it was "fantastic" to make his debut in Sunday's 4-0 win over QPR at Old Trafford.

Falcao, who joined United on a lucrative season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day, came on to a rapturous welcome on 67 minutes as goals from Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata gave Louis van Gaal his first Premier League victory.

The Colombian superstar insists he enjoyed the moment despite failing to find the net himself, and hopes United will continue in the same winning vein after an underwhelming start to the season.

"I am very happy for this victory and the support was great," he told the club's official website. "I want to continue that way. I want to say thank you to the fans and I enjoyed that a lot, this match. It was fantastic. I almost scored. The goalkeeper was good. I hope to score the next game.

"It felt good to make my debut here at Old Trafford and I am happy to get the win. I am enjoying this moment. It is an extraordinary stadium, a legendary stadium. Bit by bit, we will gel together as a team and the new players will feel more comfortable. I hope everything continues for us like it has.

Hazard close to agreeing record new Chelsea deal

    453863_heroa.jpg

Eden Hazard is close to agreeing a new contract that will make him the best-paid player in Chelsea's history, Goal understands.

Goal has learned that Hazard has been offered a deal worth just over €250,000-a-week plus performance-related bonuses.

The new deal would make him the highest paid player in the club's history, above current top earner Cesc Fabregas, whose total package is believed to be worth €250,000-a-week.

Jose Mourinho sanctioned the improved deal after having a heart-to-heart with the 23-year-old at the end of last season.

Mourinho had been concerned about Hazard's willingness to work for the benefit of the team, particularly in light of comments from the player in which he criticised the team's reliance on his own creative powers.

Goal understands that firm words were proffered from the manager but Mourinho was satisfied with Hazard's attitude and moved to ease fears the fan favourite could be tempted into a big-money transfer.

Hazard, whose current deal expires in 2017, subsequently opened contract talks with Chelsea in June after being persistently linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking at the time, Hazard said: "I am staying at Chelsea 100 per cent. Of course in football you never know but I am under contract with Chelsea and want to stay there. It is only the beginning of talks right now so we have time."

The new deal for the No.10, who has started all four of Chelsea's matches this season, is expected to be tied up in the coming weeks.

Chelsea confirmed last week that Thibaut Courtois had also agreed a new five-year contract.

:love:Di Maria is one of the world's very best - Herrera

    455865_heroa.jpg

Ander Herrera has hailed Manchester United's new signings - particularly Angel Di Maria - after Louis van Gaal's side swept to an impressive 4-0 victory over QPR on Sunday.

Di Maria opened the scoring on his Old Trafford debut, with Herrera adding a second as the United debutants secured the Red Devils' first win of the 2014-15 season.

With Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo also putting in solid displays in their first games for United and Radamel Falcao appearing off the bench late on, Herrera is backing the club's new recruits to shine.

"Angel is one of the best players in the world. Manchester United always has to have top players and he is one of the best," he told the club's official website.

"We have Radamel Falcao as well, with Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw. I think we have a new team but we are improving, we are working hard and we are looking forward to this season."

Asked about Rojo and Blind's first performances in a United shirt, Herrera said: "I think they played very good football, they had some very good passes and always kept the ball.

"Marcos is very, very aggressive and this is important for the team. Blind never loses the ball and we are happy, but of course we have to improve still."

Herrera capped an impressive display with a vital goal just four minutes after Matt Phillips wasted a gilt-edged opportunity for the visitors, but insists it is points, rather than goals, which are his target at United.

"I am happy, of course," Herrera added. "It is important to make a goal at Old Trafford, one of the best stadiums in the world. I am happy for my goal but I am happier because we won.

"I wish it can be our first step and I am sure is it. The next games are very important because we want to be as soon as possible at the top of the league."

Januzaj nets hat-trick for Manchester United Under-21s as Shaw makes return

    456317_heroa.jpg

Adnan Januzaj hit a hat-trick for Manchester United ’s Under-21s as they beat Sunderland 4-0 on Monday, with Luke Shaw also featuring for the Red Devils.

Warren Joyce named a strong side for the clash at Old Trafford with Januzaj, Shaw and Anderson all starting and Louis van Gaal watching from the stands.

Januzaj was the star performer, opening the scoring in the 19th minute after playing in Will Keane before sweeping home his return pass with a clinical finish.

Andreas Pereira, an unused substitute against QPR on Sunday, added a second just three minutes later with a half-volley to double the hosts’ lead, from Shaw’s cross.

Januzaj then put the game out of reach just five minutes later, as he skipped past a defender before firing home a composed finish, after good work again from Keane.

Defender Shaw, who did not feature aginst QPR despite being named on the bench, departed at half-time, to be replaced by Ben Pearson, after making his return to action after a hamstring injury.

Januzaj then completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute, the Belgium international sliding the ball home after a slick exchange in the box, thus rounding off a performance that will surely have impressed the watching Van Gaal ahead of United's next senior outing against Leicester.

Monaco 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen: Moutinho kickstarts Jardim reign

    456803_heroa.jpg

Joao Moutinho breathed life into Monaco's lacklustre start to the season as his 61st minute strike sealed a 1-0 Champions League group stage win over Bayer Leverkusen at the Stade Louis II.

The Ligue 1 club headed into Tuesday's Group C clash on the back of a dismal start to their Ligue 1 season, with Leonardo Jardim's side having taken just four points from their first five matches to sit second-bottom of the table. Some Monaco fans have demanded their money back from season ticket purchases after Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez were sold in the transfer window.

There was a sparse crowd for their Champions League opener but those who did turn out were treated to a victory in the Principality club's first game in Europe's premier club competition since 2005.It was Portugal international Moutinho who made the difference, settling an otherwise uninspiring game against Roger Schmidt's Bundesliga leaders with a 61st minute goal to secure three precious points.

Chances proved few and far between in a quiet start, although it was Leverkusen dictating the play in the early stages.Despite enjoying a dominance of possession, the visitors were unable to threaten Danijel Subasic in the Monaco goal.

Leverkusen midfielder Gonzalo Castro fired well wide in the 13th minute for the visitors, wasting the first real opening of the game, then Hakan Calhanoglu shot into the side-netting two minutes later.

That was as good as it got for either side until the 36th minute, when Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi could only scuff his strike after being played through by a perfectly placed ball over the top from Calhanoglu.

Schmidt's side continued to show a startling profligacy in front of goal and spurned another glorious opportunity to break the deadlock when Son Heung-min failed to capitalise on sloppy Monaco defending, hitting a dismal effort way off target.

Castro then went close in first-half stoppage time, with his volley deflected over the crossbar by Layvin Kurzawa after Monaco had failed to deal with a Leverkusen free-kick.The second half began in similarly dour fashion to the first, yet the game was brought to life when Moutinho finally opened the scoring.

Ex-Porto midfielder Moutinho latched on to a deft knock down from striker Dimitar Berbatov - playing against one of his former clubs - to finish with an effort that deflected off defender Emir Spahic over goalkeeper Bernd Leno and into the net.

That goal gave the hosts the confidence to press for a second and, although they were unable to double their advantage, the win should serve as a considerable morale boost for Jardim's men in their bid to kick-start their Ligue 1 campaign.

Olympiakos 3-2 Atletico Madrid: Spanish champions beaten in Greece

Last season's Champions League runners up Atletico Madrid suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat in their opening group stage game at Olympiakos on Tuesday.

The Greek champions were arguably second best for long periods of the Group A clash at the Karaiskakis Stadium, but were rewarded for their clinical finishing.
Atleti will rue their profligacy in front of goal and coach Diego Simeone - who took a watching brief from the stands due to a touchline ban - must wonder how his side failed to take at least a point back to the Spanish capital. The Liga holders came agonisingly close to winning the Champions League in last season's final, as they held a 1-0 lead until the 93rd minute before going on to lose 4-1 to city rivals Real Madrid after extra-time.

That European campaign saw Atleti go unbeaten in six away contests, but the visitors were two goals adrift by the 31st minute on Tuesday following Arthur Masuaku's driven effort, then on-loan Barcelona forward Ibrahim Afellay added a second with a composed finish.

Mario Mandzukic reduced the deficit before half-time, but Kostas Mitroglou, who returned to the club in the last transfer window after a short and unsuccessful spell at Fulham, slid home from close range to make it 3-1 after the break.Antoine Griezmann enjoyed an impressive performance off the bench and he gave Atletic hope with a close-range finish in the closing stages, but his strike proved to be in vain.

There was an early break in play when Mandzukic received treatment after being caught on the nose by Pajtim Kasami's elbow. Shortly after play resumed, Miranda was on hand to make a superb clearance from Kasami's teasing cross with Alejandro Dominguez lurking.

However, Atleti were caught off guard from the resulting set piece and found themselves behind after 13 minutes - a short corner was worked to Masuaku, who moved forward unchallenged from the left and drilled a 25-yard shot low into the far corner.Seeking a swift response, Atleti peppered the Olympiakos box, with Mandzukic and Raul Garcia both heading chances wide.

Olympiakos soaked up the pressure and were rewarded with a second goal against the run of play shortly after the half-hour mark.Dominguez showed great determination down the left before picking out Afellay, via a clever dummy from Mitroglou, and the forward made the most of miscommunication between Mario Suarez and Cristian Ansaldi to steer his shot past Oblak.

Atleti were back in the contest after 38 minutes, though, when Ansaldi's excellent delivery from the left was guided home by the head of Mandzukic from eight yards. The visitors continued to ask questions of the Olympiakos defence after the break, but the hosts' rearguard dealt admirably the pressure.

Griezmann entered the fray for Atleti shortly before the hour-mark and the forward almost made an impact with a stinging effort towards the top right-hand corner which drew a fine save from Roberto. The France international added a fresh impetus to Atleti's attack and soon after he broke clear down the left and once more forced Roberto into a great save low to his right.

Yet again, though, the hosts made Atleti pay for failing to take their chances in the 73rd minute. Kasami drifted past Diego Godin on the right and found Mitroglou, who turned well and side-footed home from close range.

Griezmann offered hope of a late fightback when he tapped home Koke's fizzed cross in the 86th minute, but Olympiakos stoof firm all three points..
