Manchester United took a gamble on me - Falcao

    465027_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao says Manchester United took a gamble by signing him from Monaco this summer.

The Colombian has previously insisted that he wants to stay at Old Trafford and emphasised that desire again as he discussed his move to the Premier League.

Speaking to Onda Cero, Falcao expressed his relief at joining Louis van Gaal's team after a difficult year that ended in him missing the World Cup because of a serious knee injury.

He said: "Manchester United were the ones that gambled on me when it was very difficult to do so. It has been a very difficult year, not just in my professional career.

"What happened at the start of the year [serious knee injury] affected me in every way, but it has also helped me grow as a human being, to think about many things, to mature."

United signed Falcao on a season-long loan deal from Monaco with rumours suggesting there is an option to buy, something the 28-year-old hopes comes to fruition.

"In terms of my thoughts and plans for the future, I want to stay at Manchester United for the coming years," he added.

"I'm still going to need some time to be ok, but I am feeling very comfortable and very good on the pitch, in harmony with myself, with the ball and with football."

Falcao also says he can understand the frustrations of Monaco fans following his exit, and that of James Rodrgiguez to Real Madrid, this summer.

Some supporters expressed their anger with Jorge Mendes, the agent of both Falcao and James, after both men left the Stade Louis II just 12 months after arriving, and the team currently sit 13th in Ligue 1.

"Maybe it's understandable because of the expectations that were generated last season", he added.

"Now they have lowered their spending and kept the foundations. They have changed the policy and now rely more on young players who can get good results.

"I am very thankful to them for the good and bad moments, it all made me grow."

Hodgson & Van Gaal clear the air over Shaw

    466192_heroa.jpg

Roy Hodgson and Louis van Gaal have held clear the air talks ahead of Luke Shaw's involvement for the England Under-21s this week.

The pair had fallen out following comments by Hodgson regarding the new Manchester United signing's fitness at the World Cup, with Van Gaal taking exception to the England manager's assessment despite previously airing similar concerns.

But Under-21s head coach Gareth Southgate has revealed the two men had "very positive" talks, with Van Gaal backing Shaw's inclusion for the Euro 2015 play-off against Croatia on Friday.

"Roy had that conversation and Louis was very positive about Luke playing for the under-21s," Southgate told reporters.

"If we have five or six at the younger ages then I will deal with the academy manager or first-team manager but it was Roy because he's dealing with Louis on [Wayne] Rooney and hopefully others that will be involved.

"I also know from speaking to Luke that he was really positive about him coming and playing first and foremost, playing matches."

Shaw missed the first month of the season through injury, only made his competitive debut against West Ham at the end of September and picked up a knock against Everton on Sunday.

But he is expected to feature in Friday's play-off first leg, despite going to the 2014 World Cup with the senior squad, and Southgate revealed his willingness to play at the tournament next summer, should the Young Lions make it.

"It's brilliant for him to have the humility to recognise that and be prepared to do it," he added. "There may be more of that view than people think but we've got to get across the line on Tuesday."

Koke: Ronaldo is an athlete - but Messi is a god

    461651_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke believes that while Cristiano Ronaldo is a phenomenal "athlete", Lionel Messi is a footballing "god".

Ronaldo and Messi have won the last six Ballon d'Or awards between them and the debate over which player is superior remains one of the most heated in world football.

Koke, though, believes that while the Real Madrid ace's physical prowess warrants recognition, he feels that that the diminutive Barcelona No.10 is a divine talent."Ronaldo is an athlete, but Messi is a god," the Spain internationaltold Al Primer Toque.

"They're both great players. I see them on the pitch and it's spectacular. It's tough to decide. You always want them on your team, and even though it's Cristiano, I'd choose Messi."

However, despite his reverence for the Argentine, Koke rejected the opportunity to play alongside Messi this season, insisting that he was not in the least bit tempted to move to Camp Nou when Barcelona came calling during the summer, given he had just helped Atletico beat the Blaugrana to the Liga title."I made the decision to continue at Atletico," the 22-year-old explained. "I appreciated the interest of Barcelona, but why would I have left during what is such a good time for Atletico?"

Diego Simeone's side have been accused of employing an overly aggressive approach to the game, particularly this season, and Koke admitted that he has grown weary of the constant criticism of their style of play."I am already tired of saying that we are violent," he sighed. "There is a campaign against us and it is not easy.

"But I am proud to be at Atletico. We fight for our lives at this club. We have done so since childhood."

Di Maria one of the four best players in the world, says former Manchester United defender Heinze

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze believes Angel Di Maria is one of the four best players in world football.

The 26-year-old moved to Old Trafford in a €75 million deal in August and has made an impressive start to his Premier League career with three goals and three assists in five games.

Heinze, who played in the same Argentina side as Di Maria at the 2010 World Cup, also claims the midfielder will have an easy time settling at United.

“Anything I say about Angel Di Maria is not enough. For me, he’s one of the four best players in the world,” Heinze told reporters.

“He’s already reached an amazing level and arrived at an amazing club where they will look after him and he’ll perform really well for them.

“I think everyone needs time to adapt, especially in the English league.

“You need to adapt but the club can help you and Manchester United will make things easier for you.”

    Cech open to Chelsea exit

    446788_heroa.jpg

Petr Cech has indicated that he will leave Chelsea if he remains the club’s second-choice goalkeeper.

The 32-year-old has featured only twice this season, with Jose Mourinho preferring Thibaut Courtois in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Cech had been Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper for 10 seasons since his arrival from Rennes in 2004 and insists he is not prepared to stay on the bench at Stamford Bridge this term.

"I have not spoken to anyone, but I think they know me well enough at the club to know that the situation is definitely not the way I would imagine," Cech told Czech radio.

"With the Euros [in 2016] and the national team in mind, there is no time for me to sit on the bench and not to play.

"If the situation will not start to improve for me, then I will want to solve it."

Italy exile is my fault - Pelle

    466047_heroa.jpg

Graziano Pelle says he has no-one to blame but himself for a seven-year absence from the Italy national team.

Pelle represented Italy at Under-20 and Under-21 levels earlier in his career, but subsequently failed to make the step up to the senior team because of his inability to shine at club level. However, he went on to score 50 Eredivisie goals for Feyenoord over the last two seasons and continued to be ignored by national team coaches.

However, the 29-year-old has been rewarded with a call-up to Italy's squad for their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifying double-header against Azerbaijan and Malta after making an impressive start to life in the Premier League with new club Southampton.

Pelle has scored four goals in seven appearances in the English top flight, and is determined to grab the opportunity handed to him by coach Antonio Conte with both hands."I am a positive guy," he said. "It's rare that I put the blame on someone else for something that didn't go well.

"If so much time has passed since my last Italy call-up, it means it was entirely my fault. I am now completely mature, both physically and psychologically.
"I had to take the long way round, but I got here eventually. It's better late than never.

"It's a very special feeling being back, it's wonderful to be part of this group."

    Lewandowski: Dortmund will bounce back

    459435_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski believes his former team Borussia Dortmund will bounce back from their poor start to the season and become a big rival for his side once again.

Jurgen Klopp's team beat Bayern to the league title in 2010-11 and 2011-12 before finishing runners-up to the Bavarian giants in each of the following two seasons. However, BVB have started the current campaign in terrible form, having taken just seven points from their opening seven matches, while Pep Guardiola's side sit 10 points above them at the top of the table.

Lewandowski, though, who joined Bayern from Dortmund this summer, believes his old club will soon find their form and start to put pressure on his current side.
"They have very bad luck with injured players at the moment," he told Bild. "But they are still a tough competitor for us, I'm sure."

The Poland star was prolific with BVB, as he netted an incredible 103 times in 185 appearances, including a memorable four in one single Champions League fixture against Real Madrid.

Since signing for Bayern, he has scored four times in seven Bundesliga outings but had been the subject of criticism before his double against Hannover on October 4.

Dani Alves wants to stay at Barcelona, says agent

    455123_heroa.jpg

Dani Alves would prefer to stay at Barcelona despite claims he will move to the Premier League, according to his agent.

The right-back claimed he is set to move to England next season at the end of his current contract after spending six hugely successful years at Camp Nou.His representative and ex-wife, Dinorah Santa Ana, has since stated there are no talks with anyone regarding his future - and suggests his priority would be to remain in Catalunya.

"His future is uncertain. Right now, we're not negotiating with anyone - not with Barca nor any other club," she told Catalunya Radio."We would like to stay here, mainly because our children are here. No one has told us that they want him to go."

She also added that his comments on moving to England initially emerged a year ago, but that the remarks should no longer be considered accurate."A year ago he did say he liked the Premier League, but that interview was a long time ago."

Benzema: It's a pleasure to hear praise from Ronaldo

    466016_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema admits it is a pleasure to hear Cristiano Ronaldo describe him as La Liga's best striker.

The Portugal star hailed his team-mate as the best in his position in Spain's top flight after his two goals in the 5-0 rout of Athletic Bilbao.

Ronaldo himself scored his third Liga hat-trick in four games against Ernesto Valverde's side and Benzema says he is delighted to hear such praise from a player he believes is currently the best on the planet."It's a pleasure to hear it from him, because right now he's the best player in the world and he knows a little about this. I really appreciate it," the France international told Marca.

Benzema added that the understanding of the so-called 'BBC' partnership between himself, Ronaldo and Gareth Bale is continuing to develop as his side's form begins to reach that which saw them win the Champions League last season."We understand each other very well, we complement each other and always try to help each other out. Everyone has their way of playing, but we always look for the good of the team," he added.

"Last year was a big year. I think that, this year, we needed to find a little rhthym, but bit by bit we're getting closer to our goals."

Shaqiri: I must accept Bayern will not sell me

    465953_heroa.jpg

Xherdan Shaqiri says he must accept that Bayern Munich will not sell him and has vowed to give his utmost on the pitch for Pep Guardiola. The Switzerland international was subject of a bid from Liverpool during the summer, while Juventus and Roma were also credited with an interest, after he had struggled to secure regular first-team football at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern went public with their desire to keep the 22-year-old, although new reports have emerged this week suggesting that Spanish champions Atletico Madrid will make an €18 million bid for his services.

Shaqiri, however, accepts that Bayern have made their stance clear over his future and is determined to "give everything" for the club this term."I've still got a contract until 2016 and the club have already told me I won't be going anywhere so I've just got to accept that," he told Sport1. "For as long as I am here, I will give everything I've got.

"I try to do my best in training and when the coach rewards me with appearances, like against Hannover, then that's even better. I'm always delighted when I can start games, and I show that too, like I did this time. I think everybody could see how hungry I am to play football."

Shaqiri set up Robert Lewandowski's second goal with a stunning long-range pass in Bayern's 4-0 win over Hannover at the weekend.

:love:De Gea: I want Ronaldo back at Manchester United

    465344_heroa.jpg

David de Gea has admitted that he wants Cristiano Ronaldo to return to Manchester United.

The Ballon d'Or winner has been strongly linked with a move back to Old Trafford after admitting he is open to a future switch, however Goal understands Real Madrid have told Ronaldo that a move will not happen.

"Of course I would like Cristiano Ronaldo to come to Manchester United," De Gea told Goal. "But I think it's difficult."

Any future move would come off the back of a summer of heavy spending by United, with the likes of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao arriving in big-money deals.

The duo both scored in a narrow 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday and De Gea has been impressed with both South Americans.

The United goalkeeper added: "They have adapted quickly, both scoring and supplying assists. They will make us better as everybody knows how well they did in Spain [with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid respectively]

"I hope they score a lot of goals for Manchester United."

De Gea won praise of a string of impressive saves during the victory over Roberto Martinez's side, most notably a penalty from Leighton Baines, with the goalkeeper describing the performance as "one of the best" displays of his career.

"It gives you a lot of confidence. It was an important victory for the team and I will always remember it. It was one of the best [performances] I've had and most importantly because it ended in victory.

"There are days when you play a great game but end up not winning. So in that sense, it was a perfect match."

The victory saw Van Gaal record back-to-back wins for the first time in charge of United as the club moved into the top four, and De Gea admits he is not surprised by United's slow start to the season.

"There are lots of new people, a new coach, new concepts. In the end, it is a process. The coach knows we will improve and slowly pull upward," he said.

"We're starting to win games now and, with time, we'll be there. We will fight.

"It is important to get into the Champions League with Manchester United, to be among the best in Europe. Hopefully we can win a title, too."

    Fabregas: Hazard is Chelsea's Messi

    456538_heroa.jpg

Cesc Fabregas believes Chelsea team-mate Eden Hazard can have the same impact on the Blues as Lionel Messi has at Barcelona.

Fabregas played alongside four-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi for three years before making a close-season move to Stamford Bridge where, alongside Hazard, he has helped Chelsea to the top of the Premier League.

While the ex-Arsenal captain has been consistently impressive since returning to the English top flight, Hazard too has been in fine form - winning and scoring the penalty that helped lead Chelsea to victory against Fabregas' former club on Sunday. And Fabregas feels the performances of Hazard will be key to Chelsea's success this term."He is the link between midfield and attack for us; he is our Messi because he makes the difference," the Spaniard told radio station Cope.

"We have a young team but we are very positive about the future."Much of the discussion prior to Chelsea's 2-0 win over Arsenal had centred on Fabregas coming up against a club he spent eight years at before returning to Barca. After Arsenal passed up their first option to re-sign him, Chelsea made their move, but Fabregas revealed there was a third party interested in him.

"I've always played in clubs where I wanted to play. At the end of last season, I saw Chelsea as the best option," he continued."I always thought about a return to England and I talked to Mourinho and realised this was the best option.

"It was arranged through my agent. There was no call with Mourinho, just a face-to-face meeting. Jose showed great respect and convinced me quickly. "We were honest, we put aside any history and I made my decision after talking with him. Overall I had three options in England."

Rooney: I have one eye on England goalscoring record

Wayne Rooney admitted the England goalscoring record is in the back of his mind ahead of the country's two upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Rooney has scored 41 goals in 97 appearances since making his England debut in 2003 and he is just three adrift of Jimmy Greaves, who is third in the standings.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham forward Greaves netted 44 goals between 1959 and 1967 - a haul achieved in just 57 caps.

Rooney is also only eight behind all-time leader and Manchester United great Bobby Charlton.

And with England set to step up their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign against San Marino and Estonia in the coming days, United striker Rooney said he is keeping an eye on the record.

"It's there. There's no denying it," the 28-year-old told reporters ahead of Thursday's clash with San Marino at Wembley.

"Jimmy Greaves is there and if I can overtake him this week, in the coming weeks, the coming months, that would be great.

"It's not something going into the game [I'm] thinking: 'Oh, I've got to beat Jimmy Greaves' record to get close to Bobby Charlton'.

"I'm wanting to do well for the team and if I can score goals then great and the most important thing for us is to perform well and to win the games."

Mancini: Balotelli knows Liverpool is his last chance

    466439_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini believes Mario Balotelli's spell at Liverpool is the striker's final opportunity to prove himself.

Mancini worked with the striker at both Inter and Manchester City, and knows as well as anyone how Balotelli's actions away from the field can overshadow anything he does on the pitch.

Balotelli has developed a reputation for having a fiery temper, but his list of honours at the age of 24 is impressive.

The Italy international has won four domestic league titles, as well as the FA Cup, Coppa Italia and Champions League.

Balotelli completed a move from Milan to Liverpool during the transfer window, but is yet to recapture the prolific form which saw him net 26 league goals in 43 appearances at San Siro.

And Mancini believes the forward must use his time at Anfield to display his qualities and prove any doubters wrong.

"Mario is a good guy, but he is aware that Liverpool is probably his final opportunity to prove what he can do on the pitch," he said,

"It's his last chance. I often talk to him via text message, but only he can help himself now.

"He told me that he wants to and must score more goals for Liverpool."

    England changes unlikely - Hodgson

England manager Roy Hodgson intends to select much the same XI to face San Marino as started in September's 2-0 win over Switzerland.

The Three Lions made an impressive start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in Basel, with Danny Welbeck scoring both goals, but, despite the expectations of an easy win at Wembley on Thursday, the 67-year-old is looking to build continuity.

"I'm not planning on wholesale changes; I'm keen to keep the momentum going," Hodgson told the press. "The players who played did a good job and they deserve a further confidence.

"Other players are knocking on the door and I've got to weigh the two things very carefully ... keeping the team together but maybe also using at least one of these two games as a chance to see someone else playing.

"The players look very sharp, very focused. We haven't trained for long periods of time but what we've done has been really good. When I do announce the team [on Thursday] there will be a lot of disappointed faces because everyone has been working hard."

That suggests that there will be another start for Fabian Delph, who trained on Wednesday after sitting out the previous day's session, while Welbeck earned praise from the manager after his impressive performances since making the switch from Manchester United to Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

"I'm pleased for [Welbeck], of course," said Hodgson. "He's been in my plans throughout the two years [that I've been in charge]. He's always someone that I follow very closely.

"There has been periods where it's not always been easy because he's not had an enormous amount of game time. It's great now that he's made his move and he's one of the first names on the teamsheet."

England captain and Welbeck's former United team-mate, Wayne Rooney, added: "Daniel's a fantastic footballer. I think sometimes he doesn't get the credit he deserves for his ability.

"He's quick, he's athletic and he can score different types of goals. As a footballer he's very intelligent and you'll see that more and more the more he plays.

"He'll prove what a good footballer he is. You've seen in the Switzerland game what a good player he is."

Wilshere is becoming a complete player, hails Szczesny

Wojciech Szczesny paid tribute to Arsenal team-mate Jack Wilshere and feels the midfielder is becoming a "complete player" for the club.

Wilshere has faced criticism at times due to indifferent displays, but has garnered praise of late - most notably following the 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester City last month.

Szczesny is particularly impressed with the versatility Wilshere brings to Arsenal and believes the only thing missing from the England international's game is regular goals.

"He has done well," Szczesny told the club's official website. "Obviously there is a lot of competition for his spot because you have Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey, plus Mikel [Arteta] and Mathieu [Flamini].

"So it's hard for him but every time he has come in and got his chance he has done very well. He got a good goal against Man City - I'm not sure he meant that - but I'm very happy with him.

"He can go past players in midfield, which is very important. We are all about passing the ball and moving quickly. If you past players in midfield it gives us a massive advantage - Jack is very comfortable doing that.

"That is one of his biggest qualities. If he can just add a few more goals to his game then he will be pretty much a complete player for us."

Wilshere is often deployed in a more advanced role for Arsenal, while England manager Roy Hodgson has utilised him in a defensive midfield position.

And Szczesny believes it is a sign of Wilshere's quality that he is comfortable doing either job.

"You don't get too many midfielders who are [just] central midfielders - they are either defensive or attacking midfielders," he added. "Jack has a very good balance between the two.

"I don't think it is an argument whether he should be a defensive midfielder or a number 10. I am happy with him being very balanced between defending and attacking."

Neuer wary of Bayern team-mate Lewandowski

Manuel Neuer is wary of the threat posed by Bayern Munich team-mate Robert Lewandowski ahead of Germany’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Poland.

Neuer will captain Germany in the absence of midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in Warsaw on Saturday as the world champions look to build on their 2-1 win over Scotland in last month's Group D opener.

Poland have never beaten Germany, but Adam Nawalka's men made a confident start to their qualifying campaign, hammering international new-boys Gibraltar 7-0 in a game that saw striker Lewandowski score four times.Lewandowski has scored four goals in 11 appearances for Bayern so far in his debut season with the Bavarian giants and Neuer knows the Germany defence will need to be on guard to stop the 26-year-old from adding to his international tally.

"Lewandowski is one of the world's best strikers," Neuer said. "We will have to be careful.

"It's important to be kick on from our three points against Scotland, but it will be a tough game in Warsaw."Andre Schurrle trained away from the rest of the squad on Wednesday due to a foot injury but team manager Oliver Bierhoff revealed that the Chelsea forward has made good progress.

"Things actually look good for Andre Schurrle at the moment," Bierhoff said. "We're expecting him to be able to return to training tomorrow [Thursday]."

Di Matteo undaunted by Schalke pressure

Roberto Di Matteo is undaunted by the weight of expectation on his shoulders after taking over as coach of Bundesliga side Schalke.

The former Chelsea boss was officially revealed as Jens Keller's replacement on Wednesday and is tasked with turning around the fortunes of a side that sits 11th in the German top flight with eight points from their first seven games.Schalke have been Champions League regulars in recent years and the pressure will be on Di Matteo to ensure the Gelsenkirchen outfit's place in Europe's top-tier club competition despite their disappointing start to the campaign.

However, Di Matteo insists he has the experience to handle the pressure from Schalke's supporters, especially after his win with Chelsea in the competition in 2012.

"In over 100 years, nobody has ever been able to keep a lid on the fans here," he told reporters. "When you think of Schalke, you think of the passion of their fans, of this big and ambitious club.

"I know the demands are high here, but I've been in the football business for 24 years."I've worked in Switzerland, Italy, England and now in Germany and I think I've got the experience needed to deal with it."The club wants to qualify for the Champions League automatically, and that is my aim too."

Di Matteo, who guided Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2012, believes an improvement in defence will be key to Schalke's hopes of success this term, although he is adamant his side will not be boring."The impression I have is one of a good team who have a lot of potential going forwards, but certainly have a few problems in defence," he added.

"They've had a lot of injuries too, but I think we've probably got to work on the defence a bit.

"In my opinion, you need a solid defence. Not just the back four, but the general organisation, and then you can build on that."If you look, you will see that my teams have always scored lots of goals."We'll try to play a successful game. You've got to find a balance in the team - solid at the back and have something going for you up front."

Lucas Piazon, on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt from Chelsea, compared Di Matteo in the past to Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, but the former midfielder decided on a light-hearted appraisal of his comments."He must have been drunk," he said.
