Thiago Silva fit to play but Ibrahimovic out, says Blanc

    444592_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc has confirmed that captain Thiago Silva is fit to face Lens, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss out.

Thiago Silva has been out of action since picking up a hamstring injury in a friendly with Napoli back in August.

However, the Brazil centre-back has recently returned to training and is in line to feature as PSG seek only their fourth Ligue 1 victory of the campaign after a run of four draws in their last five league games.

"Thiago Silva is back in the group," Blanc told reporters. "He will be fit to play Friday against Lens."

However, while Thiago Silva is set to make his return, the visitors will again be without talisman Ibrahimovic - absent since the 1-1 draw with Lyon last month - for the clash at the Stade de France.

The Sweden striker's campaign has been marred by various injury problems, with the 33-year-old missing out on his country's Euro 2016 qualifiers with Russia and Liechtenstein due to a heel problem.Although Blanc says that the former Barcelona, Milan and Juventus attacker is making good progress in his recovery, the meeting with Antoine Kombouare's men will come too early for Ibrahimovic.

"The injury to Ibrahimovic is progressing well," Blanc added. "However, he is not yet able to train with the group and play."Blanc confirmed that defenders David Luiz and Marquinhos and forward Ezequiel Lavezzi are also unavailable for the game at France's national stadium.

With Ibrahimovic and Lavezzi unable to play, Blanc expects striker Edinson Cavani to deliver against a side that sits 18th in the French top flight."Cavani has worked a lot," Blanc said. "He has made 10 exceptional days. I expect him to confirm that in the match."

Arsenal need a defender in January - Wenger

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will make signing defensive reinforcements a priority in January after missing out on a defender in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners embarked on the season with just six senior defenders to cover four positions after allowing former club captain Thomas Vermaelen to join Barcelona in an estimated €20 million deal this summer.

A €10m move for Greece international Konstantinos Manolas stalled over personal terms before Roma swooped to sign him and Wenger has vowed to resume his search for another defender in 2015.

"We have done remarkably well in the transfer window. We tried to buy one more, a defender, but we didn't find one. But we will try to rectify that in January," said the Frenchman at Arsenal's AGM.

Wenger also reiterated his desire to improve Arsenal's medical record with the club once again in the midst of an injury crisis and explained that the domestic core to the current Gunners team was the result of a conscious policy.

"We are trying to develop our preventive work in the medical side," he insisted. "We are also working on the mental side; it's important the players are attached to the club.

"The modern game has changed things more in favour of the clubs. I feel you have a responsibility to deal with that. I am taking a responsibility to do that with our youth teams and senior players.

"We have developed a more English team. We wanted to make a more English team. We have a good core of young English players and overall we are going in the right direction."

Mourinho is the best there is - Warnock

    468215_heroa.jpg

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock has hailed Jose Mourinho as "the best there is" as he prepares to take on his Chelsea side.

The two sides meet at Selhurst Park on Saturday with the Blues in blistering form, having won six and drawn one of their first seven Premier League games to establish a five-point lead over reigning champions Manchester City.

And Warnock sees similarities between his opponent and former Nottingham Forest boss Brian Clough, who won back-to-back European Cups during his time at the City Ground.

"I think he's the best there is, I always have done," he told reporters of Mourinho. "He's great for you guys [the media], he's always quoting something.

"When he came on the scene, he was such a good-looking so-and-so as well.

"He's signed well. If they'd signed a striker in January they'd have won the league [last season].

"He's a good manager, he's a players' manager. I'm sure he's said a few things over the last 12 months that he might have regretted later but that's the way it is.

"It's an emotional game, you can't have it all ways. He's the nearest thing to Cloughie, really. Tactically, when it comes to the tough games, he's spot on."

Warnock feels that this Chelsea side could emulate the achievements of Arsenal in 2003-04, who went an entire season unbeaten en route to the Premier League title.

"I think it's a possibility, yes," he opined. "When I look at the Arsenal team that did it, this is as near as you're going to get to a flawless team really. They're pretty solid everywhere, there's not many weaknesses in the team."

Lukaku doesn't need rest, insists Roberto Martinez

    458953_heroa.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has no intention of resting Romelu Lukaku as the striker searches for top form and fitness.

The Belgium international enjoyed a productive season on loan at Goodison Park from Chelsea in 2013-14, scoring 15 Premier League goals in 33 appearances as Everton finished fifth before reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in Brazil.

In July, Everton acquired the forward on a permanent basis for a club-record fee of €35 million but the 21-year-old has made a slow start to the new campaign with two goals in 10 appearances in all competitions so far.

In a press conference on Thursday, Martinez conceded that Lukaku is taking time to recover from the World Cup but argues that resting him would not be the ideal solution.

"Romelu is still finding his best moment of form and any player that comes back from the World Cup takes a bit of a transitional period," he remarked.

"I think Rom has done incredible to make himself available for the games we had. He's played a lot of games and probably his desire to help the team has stopped him from concentrating on being fully fit.

"Over the next few weeks we'll try to give him that physical element that he needs. When you come back from the World Cup you need to recover from the previous season.

"I think now Rom needs to play and get his match fitness and he's too important for us. We can't afford to give him a resting period and I don't think that would help him.

"I think now he's got a good level of fitness through the games he's played so it's a responsibility we've got at the club that we get him fully fit so he can enjoy his football.

"What I love about Rom is his attitude. He wants to be on the pitch, he wants to help the team and he'll accept any moments of form so that he can get through it."

Mourinho’s criticism makes me a better player – Hazard

    469942_heroa.jpg

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard says criticism from manager Jose Mourinho is helping him to develop into a better player.

The Belgium international shone under the Portuguese coach last season, though was not beyond reproach and was the subject of Mourinho's public ire after losing his man in the Blues' Champions League semi-final exit to Atletico Madrid.

Despite being singled out after Atleti's triumph, Hazard says that he has a huge amount of respect for his manager and believes that his tough love will help his potential to "explode".

"There is a lot of respect – he is the best coach in the world – and he gives me a lot of confidence," the 23-year-old told Sport Foot Magazine.

"Even after a bad match, he picks me again. He will have a little dig saying: 'Today we played with 10 [men]' but he stops there. He leaves me alone and does not go on at me."

On the subject of Mourinho's public criticism, Hazard added: "It is the first time I have known this with a coach. The others tended to protect me. He really wants my potential to explode and he does everything to make it happen."

The Belgian, though, says that the most heated bust-ups between Mourinho and his squad stay behind closed doors, while a fear of getting on the former Real Madrid boss's wrong side motivates the team to give their all.

"I had no fears when he came. I was just wondering if I was going to be stressed when he had a go at me.

"I remember my first warm-up matches in Asia with him. He killed me once or twice then I thought: 'OK, this is the Mourinho style.' When he looks you in the eyes, you feel like the target and it doesn't feel good at the time.

"If you do not give 100 per cent, you know he will not let that go and it might hurt. There have already been great slanging matches in the changing room but that stays behind closed doors. It's funny to see that – as long it's not about you!"

'Cavani? He's one of the world's best strikers' - PSG president

    457388_heroa.jpg

Edinson Cavani has been labelled as one of the world’s best strikers by the man who spent €64million to bring him to Paris Saint-Germain - president Nasser Al-Khelaifi .

In his first 15 months in Paris, the Uruguay star has failed to replicate the form that made him one of Europe’s most sought after forwards during three prolific seasons with Napoli. The 27-year-old has often been forced to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the Parc des Princes, and subsequently operated in a wide role, but retains the support of Al-Khelaifi.

"We wanted one of the best strikers in the world and we took Edinson," he told Le Parisien. "Everyone must understand that PSG is his home and he will remain here for as long as possible. Paris is a city that he loves, he has every reason to stay here."

Cavani was left out of Uruguay’s friendlies with Saudi Arabia and Oman over the international break in a bid to give him a rest.As a result he has spent the last two weeks at PSG’s Camp des Loges training base, where the club’s staff have reportedly worked intensively with him in a bid to restore his confidence.

"Edinson is an excellent player and a great professional,” Al-Khelaifi added. "He is very generous in the effort he gives and he’s still working a lot for the team, without thinking about himself and his personal statistics. "He gives 100%, you can see that just by seeing his attitude on the field, he plays in attack but he defends a lot. Cavani is a real fighter who is willing to die for PSG.

"I fully support him as I do it with all my players. The fans also love Edinson Cavani because they know he will never let them down. Through his ongoing commitment, he wins their support."

Ancelotti: I don't compare myself to Mourinho

    456846_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti says he has never once compared his achievements at Real Madrid to those of his predecessor Jose Mourinho. The former Paris Saint-Germain boss replaced Mourinho in the summer of 2013, with the Chelsea coach departing after lifting La Liga, the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana in his three years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, he departed the club amidst great controversy, following reported disputes with several first team players and ultimately paid the price for failing to win a 10th Champions League title.Ancelotti fulfilled that brief in his first campaign in charge last season as Madrid beat city rivals Atletico in the final, as well as lifting the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.

As a result, the pair have often been compared for their respective accomplishments in the Spanish capital, but the Italian has distanced himself from any comparison."I've never felt like doing better than he did at the club, I’ve other things to think about. I’ve always just tried to do my best every day," he told Marca.

The future of Iker Casillas has again been the subject of great debate following another disastrous week for the goalkeeper, in which he lost his spot in Spain’s starting XI to David de Gea after making a crucial mistake in the shock defeat to Slovakia. He has also faces a fight to retain his starting berth at the Bernabeu as a result of the summer signing of Keylor Navas from Levante, but Ancelotti would not be drawn into a discussion over the 33-year-old’s current predicament.

"Discussion over my goalkeeper is closed. I believe that the future of Casillas will continue to be linked to Real Madrid. He is part of the history of this club and when he retires he will come to this forum and accompany [Manuel] Sanchis and [Fernando] Hierro to discuss the European Cups he has won."Casillas will hope to add to his six appearances this season when Madrid travel to Levante in La Liga on Saturday.

    :cool:Messi's face appears in shadow

    469987_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi is used to leaving defenders chasing shadows but the Barcelona star has now emerged somewhat spookily in the silhouette of a woman.

Conz Preti, the editor of Spain's version of the Daily Buzz Feed, posed for a picture in front of a wall in the sunshine, but was surprised to see what looked like an outline of Messi's face staring back at her in the photograph.

Wenger considering shock Ramsey return against Hull City

    470771_heroa.jpg

Aaron Ramsey could make a shock return to the Arsenal squad for Saturday's Premier League clash against Hull City, Goal understands.

Ramsey had initially been told he would be out for between six and eight weeks with a hamstring injury sustained in the Gunners' 1-1 draw with Tottenham last month.

But he has fully recovered after the injury proved less serious than originally thought and having taken part in full training on Friday, Arsene Wenger is now considering fast-tracking him back into the matchday squad.

The Frenchman is even open to the possibility of selecting Ramsey in his starting XI, despite stating in Thursday's pre-match press conference that next Wednesday's Champions League clash with Anderlecht was the earliest the Welshman could appear again.

Ramsey has been sidelined since Arsenal's match against local rivals Spurs on September 27, and missed the club's games against Galatasaray and Chelsea as well as Wales' two fixtures during the international break.

A different Wenger, but same old Arsenal?

    463395_heroa.jpg

You hear the word 'platform' all the time in football.

We are constantly told that this victory could be a platform for the remainder of the season, or that a clean sheet is a platform to build on.

Yet when Arsenal's players talked in such terms after May's FA Cup final victory over Hull City, who they meet again on Saturday, it was difficult not to take them seriously. After all, they had just ended a nine-year trophy drought and with the coffers swelling with cash to be lavished on new signings it seemed the sky was the limit.

“This is a platform for us,” said Jack Wilshere at the time. “We failed in the cup final against Birmingham a few years ago. No disrespect to the Carling Cup but the FA Cup means more to us as players.

“The last time I won a cup it was the FA Youth Cup but this is a bit different. It's the first one for many of us and hopefully it's a platform.”

That theme continued into pre-season, with captain Mikel Arteta stating in July that more was expected this season.

“Hopefully it's the platform we can build on, because I think this club has to be aiming for much bigger trophies and be much more consistent. And hopefully that's the road we take.”

Yet as Arsenal prepare to face Hull again, many are wondering just how much has changed.

There have certainly been improvements, with the team undoubtedly stronger than last season.

Alexis Sanchez is a superb addition, while the €20 million signing of Danny Welbeck made perfect sense. Mathieu Debuchy, before his ankle injury, was proving that he was a more than capable replacement for Bacary Sagna while David Ospina will provide Wojciech Szczesny with competition.

The revelation has been Calum Chambers, a player who insiders at Arsenal have admitted is better than they realised when they paid Southampton €20m for him.

Arsene Wenger has also got tough on his players, unleashing a verbal volley at three of them - including Alexis - for their part in Chelsea's first goal a fortnight ago. The Frenchman has tweaked his gameplan for the big matches and felt he had been let down by individuals.

It is part of a wider revolution in the manager's thinking, but as Sir Chips Keswick made extremely clear, he has the full backing of the board to do whatever he likes anyway: "If he has a plan, we back it," he said. "If he doesn't, we keep quiet."

The concern, then, is that not enough has changed. A high-class defensive midfielder should have been purchased, while going into the season with just six senior defenders always looked an extremely risky strategy.

Then there are the injuries. Twice after the draw with Tottenham Wenger said 'I don't understand' - or words to that effect - why Aaron Ramsey and Arteta had suffered injuries in that game.

Both were well-rested, neither was in the 'red zone' that they would have been at the end of last season, yet both suffered muscular injuries.

Next up was Mesut Ozil. The German's position in the team was coming under intense scrutiny due to Wenger's reluctance to play him in his preferred No.10 position – he was outstanding when selected there against Aston Villa but the manager wants him to build up his fitness on the wing – but for the next three months he will be sidelined with a knee injury.

Arsenal's record signing completed the 90 minutes in the defeat at Chelsea and left for international duty, where the injury was scanned and a diagnosis given by the German national team via Twitter, which does not reflect well on Arsenal.

Ozil's injury will at least save Wenger more headlines and questions over whether he should drop the German or switch him to a more central position, with the likelihood being that Jack Wilshere - one of the biggest positives of the campaign to date - will be given extra responsibility.

But the fact that Arsenal are once again suffering an injury crisis – physioroom.com states their playing staff have suffered an incredible 28 separate injuries since that FA Cup victory – is cause for grave concern. Wenger has promised a thorough investigation into the causes, and Shad Forsythe was brought in over the summer, but no other club suffers as Arsenal do in this regard.

Already this season Arsenal have used 21 players in the Premier League alone, just one fewer than the Invincibles of 2003-04 required over the entire season – a statistic that will worry Wenger.

Other old failings were visible in the defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, too. Arteta and then Flamini were over-run, with Nemanja Matic in the latter game providing an exemplary example of how the holding midfield role should be played.

It is perhaps unfair to compare the duo to Patrick Vieira and Gilberto, but their stats during the Invincible season make for interesting reading. In the 03-04 season they made nine tackles a game between them. So far this season Arteta and Flamini make 4.5.

They also created 1.49 chances per game between them, while Arteta and Flamini average 0.9.

Arteta and Flamini have higher pass completion percentages – 94% compared to 82.5% - but there is always the feeling that they are guilty of 'sterile possession', with Jose Mourinho intimating in the past he was happy to allow Arteta to have the ball as he was unable to kill Chelsea with his range of passing.

Questions are also being asked over whether Szczesny has progressed as might have been expected – his save percentage of 62.5 is the lowest in a single season so far in his career – but it is hoped Ospina's arrival will bring the best out of him.

That there is no top-class competition for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny must also be queried, particularly when Chelsea and Manchester City added Kurt Zouma and Eliaquim Mangala to their ranks this summer.

And there's the rub: while Arsenal have improved Chelsea and City have done so to an even greater degree.

The season could well be defined by Chelsea's purchase of a player Arsenal wanted in Diego Costa and one they turned down in Cesc Fabregas.

Former Arsenal hero Fabregas has racked up as many assists as Wenger's whole team, while Costa has been ruthless in front of goal, converting 47% of his chances. The Gunners' conversion rate this season is 15% - down 2% on last season.

    465492.jpg

The ruthlessness that saw Mourinho purchase Willian from under Tottenham's noses last summer does not appear to be in Wenger's make-up. In signing Fabregas he would also have been striking Chelsea a significant blow, but he continued to put his faith in Ozil.

The AGM threw up more questions about Stan Kroenke's ownership of the club and whether he intends to run it for personal profit, but there is around €75m that could have been spent on players.

And as Arsenal have scored fewer goals and had fewer shots in their first seven games of this season compared to the final seven of 2013-14, it is clear this side is not operating at full capacity quite yet.

When they do it may well be enough to haul them past a Manchester United side rebuilding under Louis van Gaal, a Liverpool team coping with the loss of Luis Suarez, an Everton side that are struggling to hit the heights of last season and a Tottenham team that are frustratingly inconsistent.

But few would bet against them catching either Chelsea or City, particularly as they are already nine points behind the former.

And while chief executive Ivan Gazidis said on Monday that Arsenal were "off the shoulder of the world's top teams", you have to wonder whether they can catch or overtake any of those sides.

Gazidis also claimed the toughest challenge Arsenal will face is finding Wenger's long-term replacement, but of more immediate concern should be bridging the gap at the top of the table.

It is obvious that the club took a step in the right direction last season, and another step forward over the summer. But Chelsea, in particular, made a giant leap.

And as Hull roll into London again, many at the Emirates will be wondering if more could have been done to ensure they really did use the FA Cup victory as a platform for change.

Argentine game abandoned after mass brawl

An Argentine third-tier fixture between Deportivo Roca and Cipolletti was abandoned after a mass brawl broke out among the players.

Visitors Cipolletti were leading 1-0 when their defender Marcos Lamolla was cautioned for a foul.As a Deportivo player remonstrated with Lamolla in defence of his stricken team-mate, both he and Lamolla were dismissed, before Lamolla ran the length of the field to catch up with the aggressor.

That sparked a mass brawl involving players and substitutes from both sides, causing referee Fernando Espinosa to abandon the encounter."The players are responsible for the embarrassment out on the field," Deportivo head coach Diego Landeiro told reporters on Thursday after the game.

"You want to work, want to improve and give an education to the players.
"But what the players did from both teams was not worthy of professionals. What the two teams did was painful."I am very concerned. This was an embarrassment."

Sabella: Messi destined to become a playmaker

    415915_heroa.jpg

Former Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella believes Lionel Messi will eventually evolve into a playmaking role.

Sabella, who left his role in charge of Argentina after this year’s World Cup final defeat to Germany, was praised for devising a system which final saw Messi replicate his club form on the international stage.

Messi memorably equalled former striker Gabriel Batisuta’s record of 12 goals in calendar year in Sabella’s first year as coach.

Having now netted over 400 goals in his 10-year career - and being on the brink of becoming La Liga's all-time top goalscorer - and Sabella believes the 27-year-old four-time Ballon d’Or winner will evolve into someone pulling the strings, rather than remaining the main man up front.

“As time passes and he loses that extraordinary, explosive pace, he will become more of a playmaker,” Sabella told Cope.“He’s so extraordinary that we only know [him as a goalscorer], but can do so much more.”

Sabella made Messi captain upon his appointment as Argentina coach and went on to insist the Barcelona star will go down in history as the one of the best the sport has seen.“He is one of the world's great players, and we are lucky to see him week in, week out. He is one of the best players of all time,” he said.

"His team-mates know that he can win a game, he can help win a match, and his opponents are scared of what he can do to them. He is a decisive, incredible player.”

    Redknapp: I'm not under pressure

    458370_heroa.jpg

A defiant Harry Redknapp has hit back at increased speculation that he could be sacked by QPR, insisting that he is "not under pressure".

The 67-year-old again faced questions over his future at a press conference on Friday following reports that chairman Tony Fernandes is considering appointing a new manager, with Tim Sherwood the favourite to take over at Loftus Road.

The Rs have endured a difficult start on their return to the Premier League, as they languish at the foot of the table after winning only one of their first seven games.

Redknapp revealed in August that he was ready to sign a new two year-contract but he is still yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, heightening uncertainty over his future.

The former Tottenham manager, however, insists he has no concerns that he will lose his job as he prepares for Sunday's clash with Liverpool, declaring: "I'm not under pressure, none whatsoever.

"Looking forward to the game on Sunday, playing against one of the best clubs in the world in my opinion, Liverpool. We're the underdogs, great game for us, looking forward to it.

"The impasse over my contract - and I don't have to sit here and tell you lies - is that I wasn't bothered about signing a new contract. Not bothered in the slightest. It didn't bother me, what are contracts?

"There's a manager in the Premier League who's got an eight-to-10-year contract. What is it? If you get the sack you don't get eight years' money. You get the sack and you get whatever you get, a few months or six months, so what is a contract?

"You work for a club, if they don't want you, you talk to the chairman, you get to sort out what you're doing and you all move on.

"Contracts mean nothing, if you're going well. If we stay up this year and I'm here still and at the end of the year Tony wanted to talk about another year with me, I'd be delighted if that's what I want to do in my life.

"But to have to sign a contract, if I'd have been that bothered I would have chased him up when he came on TV and said 'I want to give Harry a new two-year contract'.

"It didn't bother me in the slightest because I trust the chairman, he's a good man, we get on well and if I want to stay and he wants me to stay I don't need a contract. It's not important to me.

"I was up at 4am this morning. I love this job and football management. I've got a great desire for the job still.

"I don't need assurances from anybody. It's up to Tony what he does, if he's not happy don't talk to me. I'm a big boy, it's not a problem. I'm doing my best, doing best with what I've got."

Redknapp confirmed that Jordon Mutch will be out for "a few weeks" with a hamstring injury, while fellow midfielder Joey Barton will not face Liverpool as he is also troubled by a hamstring problem. Niko Kranjcar may play a part despite suffering a broken toe.

Sturridge set for further four weeks out with calf injury

    460732_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers expects to be without Daniel Sturridge for up to another four weeks after the Liverpool striker injured his calf.

In a massive blow for Liverpool, scans confirmed Sturridge pulled his calf during a training session on Thursday.

The striker has not featured for the Reds since August 30 and set to make his Premier League return against QPR on Sunday after a six-week stint on the sidelines due to a thigh strain sustained on international duty.

"Daniel has pulled his calf," manager Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo on Friday. "He's looking at being out for another two to four weeks.

"It's a big blow as we were looking forward to welcoming Daniel back. He has worked tirelessly.

"But we have other players training hard and working hard and we will turn to them. It's why we bulked up the squad in the summer."

Sturridge has only made three appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring his only goal in their season-opener against Southampton.

Lens 1-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Three reds given out as champions fight back

    472781_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain overcame their injury crisis to beat Lens 3-1 following a bizarre spell of three dismissals in six minutes on Friday.

Referee Nicolas Rainville produced three red cards in quick succession early in the second half at the Stade de France, as the champions had Edinson Cavani sent off just moments after he had scored a penalty while Lens saw Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Jerome Lemoigne given their marching orders.

PSG coach Laurent Blanc was without a host of star names including David Luiz, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva for the Ligue 1 clash, and Adamo Coulibaly opened the scoring after just 10 minutes following a swift Lens breakaway.

That put Lens boss Antoine Kombouare on top against his former club, but Yohan Cabaye levelled just before the half-hour mark, before Maxwell's delightful lob - which came after a poor piece of goalkeeping from Rudy Riou - put PSG in front.
Referee Rainville's decisions then proved the only second-half talking points.

Having awarded a soft spot-kick against Gbamin for a foul on Cavani, Rainville sent the defender off before showing two yellow cards to PSG's Uruguayan striker for his gun-firing celebration towards the crowd and then his reaction to his initial booking.

Lemoigne's dismissal, following a shove on Cabaye, restored PSG's numerical advantage, which they used to see out their first league win in three matches amid strange scenes at the national stadium.Despite being depleted by injuries, PSG began brightly and Cavani fired into the side-netting after four minutes.

However, a quick Lens counter saw Coulibaly surging into the champions' box, with his calm sidefooted finish taking a nick off PSG captain Thiago Motta and deceiving keeper Salvatore Sirigu.

Blaise Matuidi then added to Blanc's fitness worries as he limped off with an apparent thigh problem, before Cabaye arrived late at the edge of the box and guided home his first league goal for PSG.

And Maxwell put PSG in front soon after with a perfectly executed lob from 35 yards. Riou could only palm a long ball from Marco Verratti to the Brazilian, who took full advantage of the open goal as his precise right-footed lob left the backpedalling Lens goalkeeper wrapped up in the back of his own net.

Sirigu did well to keep out Coulibaly's header and ensure PSG went in ahead at the break, and Blanc's men extended their advantage soon after the interval when Cavani converted from the spot.

Cavani went down under minimal contact from Gbamin, who was shown a second yellow card for his indiscretion, before the striker himself was on the wrong end of some controversial refereeing from Rainville as PSG were reduced to 10 men.
Rainville was not finished there, either, as he capped off an incredible six-minute period by showing Lemoigne a second yellow for tangling with Cabaye inside the area.

PSG were able to see out the game with relative ease to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, but Cavani's suspension and a possible spell on the sidelines for Matuidi provides Blanc with yet more selection headaches.

Cavani red card is bad for French football - PSG president

    473071_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has criticised the controversial red card given to Edinson Cavani in his side's 3-1 win over Lens.

The Uruguayan forward slammed home a penalty to give PSG a two-goal cushion over the home side on Friday but was booked for celebrating with his trademark pose - mimicking the firing of a gun.

After the 27-year-old protested the yellow card and grabbed the referee's arm, he was then shown an immediate red card.Al-Khelaifi was in disbelief about the dismissal, insisting that punishments given for such celebrations are bad for French football.

"It is the media's job to speak about the referee," he said to Canal +."Cavani does not deserve that red card. And why has he got a yellow before? He always does the same celebration.

"This is not normal and it is not good for French football if we want to develop. It is a bad situation for everyone."

    Blanc unhappy with PSG performanc

    459374_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc was unhappy with his side's display, despite beating Lens 3-1.

In a match full of talking points, PSG came from a goal down to lead at the break before Edinson Cavani added the final goal from the spot at the Stade de France.

However, after Jean-Philippe Gbamin was shown a second yellow card for his foul on Cavani, the Uruguayan earned a caution for his gun-pose celebration and another following his reaction to it.

Referee Nicolas Rainville completed his trio of red cards within six hectic minutes when Jerome Lemoigne was booked for a second time after clashing with PSG midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who had earlier equalised Adamo Coulibaly's 10th-minute opener.

Blanc's side saw out the result to pick up their first win in three league matches, but the Frenchman was unimpressed by both the refereeing and the way his side sat back on their two-goal lead."I will not answer questions on the refereeing. The game lost its appeal because of what happened," he told Canal+.

"It is a difficult game to analyse. The second half, even with mitigating circumstances, did not satisfy me."I regret the lack of ambition that my team showed after the third goal, but the pitch was difficult and there were also physical problems as well.

"Subconsciously we wanted to preserve [the lead] but it does not please me. I'm happy with the win, that's the most important thing."Blanc was without the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Luiz, Marquinhos and Ezequiel Lavezzi due to injury, while Thiago Silva was absent due to personal problems.

Blaise Matuidi was forced off with a thigh problem midway through the first half but Blanc said the injury did not appear serious, and Silva is expected to return for Tuesday's Champions League clash with APOEL.

Luis Enrique: Suarez is not fat

    458013_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has admitted he does not know if Luis Suarez is currently fully fit but was adamant that the striker is not fat.

The Uruguay international is preparing to make his debut for his new club with his supsension for biting Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup now nearing its end.
Suarez will be eligible to line up for Barca's senior side for the first time when they face fierce rivals Real Madrid in El Clasico on October 25 and his coach says he is not sure how close to full fitness he is.

"It is hard to say," he told reporters when asked about the summer signing's condition. "He feels he has improved compared to the first training sessions and the games with his country have helped him."I don’t know if he’s at 100 per cent, 80% or 90% fitness - but he is not fat."You will have seen that. He has been in form for the past few months."

Barcelona take on Eibar on Saturday and Luis Enrique says he is expecting a lively encounter despite the huge gulf in resources between the two clubs.

"They are not a team who shut up shop," he said. "They have got good results away from home. I expect a team that pushes high up the pitch, that falls back well and is good on the counter. "They are bold and valiant. The Camp Nou plays its part, but we will see interesting things from them going forward."I don’t think they will be frightened. I think they will come out like they did at Atletico Madrid."
