:yes:Hummels: Now we must take Champions League form into Bundesliga

    483011_heroa.jpg

Mats Hummels was delighted with Borussia Dortmund's performance after they thrashed Galatasaray 4-0 in Turkey and hopes they can take their Champions League heroics to the Bundesliga.

Goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2), Marco Reus and Adrian Ramos ensured that BVB maintained their 100 per cent record in Champions League Group D, a far cry from their form in the German league where they currently sit just one point above the relegation zone.

"It is a little different in the Champions League. We have a little more space for our counterattacks," Hummels explained to Sky.

"Our aim was to strengthen our defence and not to commit easy mistakes. We were shocking in that respect against Koln [in the 2-1 defeat on Saturday]. Tonight we were very effective.

"We scored beautiful goals and that made it easier. For us it was important to stay on course in the Champions League. And now we have to get back on track in the Bundesliga after five really bad matches in the league."

Galatasaray boss Cesare Prandelli conceded that his side were no match for Dortmund and the Istanbul-based outfit are now bottom of the group with just one point.

"We played against a really tough team," he said to Smartspor.

"Borussia Dortmund are a complete side and have been very successful in the Champions League in recent years.

"We must improve but our primary target is the Turkish League. The Galatasaray board brought me here for the league title, for the fourth star. Now we must focus on the championship."

Klopp: I wish it were always this easy!

    498291_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp says he wishes football "were always this easy" after his team strolled to a 4-0 win at Galatasaray.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set BVB well on their way to the Istanbul rout, with Marco Reus' stunning strike and Adrian Ramos rounding off the victory.

Klopp's side have struggled in their recent Bundesliga games, losing their last three in a row, and their coach wishes they could execute his tactics to the letter more often.

"We defended superbly and we were very good on the counter," he told Sky.

"If only football were always this easy! Gala play with an attacking diamond in midfield and we defended well against it.

"And we know that [Wesley] Sneijder is a classic No.10 which meant that the three players behind him need to cover all the space. They didn't do that very well and we exploited it.

"Plus, it is no secret that our players are faster than theirs."

Klopp is now turning his attention to the weekend's Bundesliga clash against Hannover, with BVB having failed to win their last five domestic matches.

"We are aware of the next task. We have to let Hannover feel that we are not doing well and we need those three points to close a gap."

However, he may be without the services of Sven Bender, who sustained an arm injury in Istanbul.

"He told me that he thought his elbow was dislocated for a short time. That's an injury I've never heard of. He had already got a knock to his face in the first half.

"He's now at hospital and they will scan everything. I really hope it's not too bad because that would belittle this victory."

Balotelli risks ire of Liverpool fans with half-time shirt swap against Real Madrid

    480711_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli has risked the anger of Liverpool fans by swapping shirts with Pepe at half-time of the Reds' clash with Real Madrid. The under-fire striker, who has scored just one goal for the Reds and was criticised for his poor performance against QPR on Sunday, drew another blank in the first period against the European champions, and was later pictured exchanging shirts with the Portugal international.

The move will have done little to improve his relations with the Anfield faithful, with the Reds trailing 3-0 going into the interval following a Karim Benzema brace and a fine Cristiano Ronaldo strike.

Balotelli was later substituted ahead of the second period, Brendan Rodgers opting to introduce Adam Lallana in place of the £16 million signing from AC Milan with the home side searching for a way back into the game.

Liverpool have endured a tricky return to the Champions League, having lost to Basel in Switzerland on Matchday Two following a narrow opening night win over Ludogorets, and they travel to the Bernabeu for the second leg of their double-header against Real next time out.

'Messi is close but I'll break the record'

    496981_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo remains confident he will pip Lionel Messi to the Champions League goalscoring record after edging closer to Raul’s mark in Real Madrid's 3-0 win at Liverpool on Wednesday.
Ronaldo moved within one of the former Madrid striker by grabbing his 70th strike in the competition at Anfield, one more than Barca star Messi.

The Portuguese had numerous chances to claim a share of the record but was thwarted by home goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Ronaldo was certainly not downbeat afterwards, however, telling Sky Sports: "I am not worried about that. I know I'm going to beat the record, if not tonight then some other game. Messi is very close too."

The former Manchester United star acknowledged the individual prize on offer, admitting it was "an indication of hard work" but was happy to focus on the team's impressive progress.

He added: "It's a team game. We have nine points, 75 per cent of the qualification is done.

"It was special, my first goal here at Anfield and I feel very proud for that. We got the three points, it was amazing.

"We knew before the game that Liverpool at Anfield is difficult but we played fantastic, especially in the first 45 minutes and we deserved to win."

Madrid were ruthless in a first half they dominated, Ronaldo's wonderful finish following neat build-up play from James Rodriguez added to by two Karim Benzema strikes.

Carlo Ancelotti's side are favourites to become the first team to retain the Champions League but Ronaldo was adamant they must not let-up.

"We are taking it step by step. We are going to try like last year. We know it's going to be very tough. We are positive and know it will be possible if we play like that."

Olympiakos 1-0 Juventus: Kasami strikes as Old Lady stumble in Athens

    497201_heroa.jpg

An outstanding second-half performance from Olympiakos goalkeeper Roberto helped earn his side a 1-0 win over Juventus on Wednesday.

With the Greek side leading thanks to Pajtim Kasami's first-half goal at the Karaiskakis Stadium in this Champions League Group A encounter, Spaniard Roberto produced a string of superb saves after the interval to ensure they claimed all three points.

In the space of 15 minutes midway through the second period, he made remarkable stops to deny Alvaro Morata, Paul Pogba and Carlos Tevez on what was a frustrating night for Massimiliano Allegri's men.

Former Fulham man Kasami had earlier struck a low finish into the bottom left-hand corner as Olympiakos continued their strong recent run of results at home on Europe's biggest club stage.

Over the past 12 months, Olympiakos have beaten Benfica, Anderlecht, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid on their own soil, and this result against the Italian champions represented their fifth consecutive home victory in the Champions League.

Juve, who dropped points in Serie A for the first time this season on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Sassuolo, had Chile international Arturo Vidal back in the side after he was rested at the weekend, but the midfielder failed to have a telling impact as Olympiakos held on to move onto six points at the halfway stage in the group - three more than Juventus.

The hosts made a bright start, Kostas Mitroglou flicking a half-chance wide before Alejandro Dominguez brought a flying save out of Gianluigi Buffon with a free-kick in the opening seven minutes.

Juve went close themselves five minutes later as Tevez's stabbed effort was headed off the line by Omar Elabdellaoui as Olympiakos failed to deal with Andrea Pirlo's corner.

Tevez did have the ball in the net in the 20th minute, but his header was rightly disallowed for offside as the hosts showed further hesitancy from a Pirlo set-piece.

The game continued to ebb and flow, and a superb touch and volley from Dominguez flashed across the face of goal in the 27th minute.

Ten minutes before the break, Olympiakos opened the scoring with a well-worked goal.

Dominguez led the break and played the ball to Mitroglou, who laid a pass back into Kasami for the midfielder to fire left-footed beyond Buffon from the edge of the penalty area.

Morata went close with a left-footed volley six minutes after the interval.

Kasami should have doubled his and Olympiakos' tally on the hour mark, but he rolled the ball wide from six yards after being teed up by the influential Dominguez.

Juve almost took advantage of that miss five minutes later, but Roberto brilliantly parried Morata's thumping effort from eight yards.

Roberto performed heroics once more as the game entered the final quarter of an hour, clawing away Pogba's cross before keeping out Tevez's close-range effort with his legs.

With nine minutes remaining, he pulled off another outstanding save, reacting sharply to tip Morata's fierce drive onto the crossbar as Juve continued to press hard for an equaliser.

But a leveller did not arrive as the Greek side held on for a battling victory that puts them in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages.

Borussia Monchengladbach 5-0 Apollon: Traore double helps Germans trounce Cypriots

    502681_heroa.jpg

Borussia Monchengladbach eased to their first Europa League group stage win of the campaign, thumping Apollon 5-0 on Thursday at Borussia Park.

After starting the game strongly, the hosts were gifted the perfect opportunity to open the scoring only 11 minutes into the first half after a terrible defensive mistake from Hugo Lopez, and Ibrahima Traore fired the ball into the back of the net from close range to give his side a well deserved lead.

Borussia Monchengladbach continued to boss possession for the rest of the first half but were denied the opportunity to go further ahead by goalkeeper Bruno Vale, who pulled off a plethora of fine saves to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

However, the German side came out even stronger in the second period, with Branimir Hrgota turning in Traore's saved effort after 56 minutes before the Guinean midfielder turned scorer again with a thumping shot from the edge of the box 10 minutes later.

They weren't done just yet, however, and substitute Patrick Herrmann scored a fourth with a great first-time shot with just seven minutes left to play before Thorgan Hazard's cross-cum-shot ended up deflecting off Apollon defender Angelis Charalambous, beating Vale to wrap up an emphatic win.

Despite being a point behind heading into tonight's clash, the hosts began the game as the favourites to come away with the victory, and they started as they meant to go on, with an impressive forward line causing the Apollon defence plenty of problems in the opening stages.

They were rewarded for their efforts on the 11-minute mark after a terrible pass by Lopez went straight to Hrgota, who squared the ball to Traore to easily slot into the back of the net.

Apollon continued to struggle from then on and it was only due to fantastic goalkeeper from Vale that they didn't go into the half-time break three or four goals down, as the Portuguese shot-stopper pulled off great saves to deny both Max Kruse and Hazard in the closing stages of the first period.

However, Gladbach picked up where they left off after the break, and Traore was on hand to cause the Cypriot side further misery 11 minutes in when his rocket of a shot was parried into the path of Hrgota, who easily slotted the ball into the back of an empty net.

Traore, who was on fire from start to finish, then scored his second of the game 10 minutes later with a fantastic low shot from the edge of the penalty area that left Vale with no chance, before the hosts seemed to sit back in an attempt to hold on to their three-goal lead.

However, even when they were defending they were causing the visitors plenty of problems all over the pitch, and it wasn't long before it was 4-0, with Herrmann turning in a great Hazard cross with a wonderful first-time shot from the edge of the six-yard box with seven minutes left to play.

Things were only going to get worse for Apollon, who looked completely dejected and bereft of belief by now, and a Charalambous own-goal in the 91st minute wrapped up a terrible night for the Cypriot side, who have now conceded nine goals in their last two Europa League games.

Villarreal 4-1 Zurich: Bruno scores stunner in Yellow Submarine cruise

    503181_heroa.jpg

Bruno scored a stunning free-kick as Villarreal coasted to a 4-1 win over Zurich in the Europa League at El Madrigal on Thursday night.

This is the Yellow Submarine’s ninth consecutive home victory in the Europa League – group stage to final – bringing them one shy of tying the current record of 10 held by Atletico Madrid and Benfica.

It took Villarreal just six minutes to open the scoring, as Javier Espinosa sent Gerard Moreno through on goal, with the striker rounding the keeper and unselfishly passing across for Cani, who guided the ball into the empty net.

The goal gave the hosts an early boost, as they continued to apply pressure in attack, but could not find a way through to double their advantage, which provided the Swiss outfit with some much needed confidence.Zurich finally began to grow into the match, and their efforts were rewarded in the 43rd minute when Yassine Chikhaoui’s deflected shot fell kindly to Marco Schonbachler at the far post, with the midfielder putting the ball past a diving Juan Carlos to level the score.

Villarreal had a glorious chance to equalise just before the break, but Luciano Vietto’s header was saved on the line by David Da Costa.

Marcelino’s side wasted little time trying to get back in front after the restart, bombing forward straight away to put the visitors under pressure.

Their persistence was finally rewarded just before the hour mark when Espinosa, who spurned a glorious chance just moments earlier, picked out Vietto in the area, with the striker passing the ball into the back of the net past a diving Da Costa to restore their lead.

Villarreal were back at it just moments later, as captain Bruno Soriano doubled their lead with a remarkable free kick, curling an unstoppable left footed drive into the top corner. The hosts sealed the three points with the introduction of Giovani dos Santos, who finished off the game in style, capping off a dazzling run with a clever finish past the keeper at the near post.

The victory ensures Villarreal remain in first place in Group A at the half-way point, while Zurich fail to climb out of last.

Tottenham 5-1 Asteras Tripolis: Kane nets hat-trick but outstanding Lamela steals the show

    502761_heroa.jpg

Erik Lamela scored a wonderful rabona goal and Harry Kane hit a superb hat-trick as Tottenham ran out convincing 5-1 winners over Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League at White Hart Lane on Thursday.

Spurs had begun Group C with frustrating draws against Partizan and Besiktas, but Thursday's game at White Hart Lane saw a much more positive performance that was lit up by an outrageous goal from Lamela.

Kane opened the scoring with an excellent strike of his own after 13 minutes, but Lamela stole the show just before the half hour when he elected for a 'rabona' effort from the edge of the area that flew past the helpless Tomas Kosicky in the Asteras goal.

The Argentine got his second of the match with a brilliant volley in the 66th minute before Kane added two more to complete his well-deserved hat-trick.

Tottenham's victory was marred somewhat by keeper Hugo Lloris being sent off late on, and Kane rounded off his eventful evening by spilling Jeronimo Barrales' shot from the resulting free-kick into his own net after taking the Frenchman's place in goal.

Mauricio Pochettino made six changes to the Tottenham side beaten at Manchester City on Saturday, but it was a strong line-up with Jan Vertonghen, Ben Davies, Mousa Dembele, Andros Townsend, Kane and Emmanuel Adebayor coming in.

And Kane put them in front early on with a fierce right-footed drive from 25 yards out that arrowed beyond Kosicky and into the bottom-left corner.

The hosts survived a scare when Facundo Parra was put clean through but was denied at close range by first Lloris and then Davies, and Lamela soon capitalised on that let-off with his incredible first goal.

Townsend tried to match that effort with a long-range attempt that went just wide before then testing Rosicky with another strike as Spurs looked to extend their advantage before the break.

Asteras tried to rally at the start of the second half and managed to apply a little pressure of their own.

They were three behind on 66 minutes, though, when Lamela was fed by Kane and, after his first shot rebounded up into the air, he hit the back of the net with a left-footed screamer.

Lloris was at full stretch to keep out a fantastic volley from Fernando Usero but Tottenham added another on 75 minutes when Kosicky could only parry out Dembele's shot and Kane poached his second.

Kane completed his hat-trick with a close-range header before Lloris was dismissed for a foul on Anastasios Tsokanis when he was clean through.

Kane took over goalkeeping duties for the free-kick, but would be best advised not to give up his day job as a goalscorer as a tame Barrales shot squirmed embarrassingly under his body.

Young Boys 2-0 Napoli: Partenopei stunned in Switzerland

    502141_heroa.jpg

Napoli’s perfect start to their Europa League campaign came to an end on Thursday courtesy of a 2-0 defeat at Young Boys.

A closely contested game came to life early in the second half, when Guillaume Hoarau netted with a half volley.

Leonardo Bertone then made it 2-0 on the break in stoppage time to give the hosts all three points, leapfrogging them above the Partenopei at the top of Group I.The first real opening came with a quarter of an hour on the clock, when Hoarau glanced a header narrowly wide of the post.Jonathan de Guzman attempted to hit back for the visitors moments later, but his effort from a tight angle was parried by Yvon Mvogo.

The Young Boys keeper was a fairly busy man in the first half and a superb dive to divert a Dries Mertens curler around the post kept the scores level.

Hoarau’s aerial presence kept the Napoli defence honest though, and the striker really should have done better when presented with a free header at the far post, as he nodded straight at Rafael. But after a frustrating first half, Hoarau wouldn’t have to wait long for his moment after the restart, slotting home a neat half-volley with 52 minutes on the clock.

The expected response from Napoli wasn’t forthcoming though, and Rafa Benitez was forced to make a change as Marek Hamsik came on in place of the disappointing Michu.

However, the best the Slovakian could manage was a half-hearted appeal for handball, as Young Boys proved themselves adept at repelling what little the Serie A side could muster. Substitute Jose Callejon saw a goal correctly disallowed, before Napoli were undone for the final time.

Their haste to find a leveler left all sorts of space at the back, and Steffen exploited the gaps with a through pass to Bertone, who beat Rafael with aplomb to clinch a famous win for the Swiss side.

Lille 0-0 Everton: Toffees hold firm to stay top of Group H

    501991_heroa.jpg

Everton held firm to deny Lille a Europa League victory in France and remain top of Group H on Thursday evening.

More than 8,000 away supporters and an enthusiastic home crowd helped to create a fine atmosphere at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole.

However, the action on the pitch, whilst remaining competitive, produced few clear-cut chances, with Aiden McGeady going closest to breaking the deadlock.

The Merseyside club had already beaten Wolfsburg and picked up a point at Kuban Krasnodar in Group H, so remain unbeaten.

So too do Lille, who drew 1-1 with the same two opponents and have been struggling for goals in the French top flight this season, scoring just eight times in 10 fixtures.

On-loan Liverpool forward Divock Origi showed plenty of pace and endeavour, but Tim Howard was seldom called into action.

Lille were still without on-loan Manchester City playmaker Marcos Lopes through injury but brought in Senegal duo Idrissa Gueye and Pape Ndiaye Souare after losing at home to Guingamp in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Everton made six changes from their weekend win over Aston Villa, with Tony Hibbert, Sylvain Distin, McGeady, Steven Pienaar, Muhamed Besic and Samuel Eto'o all called up.

A tight first 15 minutes ended with Besic being harshly booked for a high tackle after he clearly played the ball.

Eto'o then had a chance to put Everton ahead but got the ball caught up in his feet, while Gueye grazed the post with a fierce shot from the edge of the area at the other end.

Howard comfortably dealt with a long-range Ronny Rodelin effort and Florent Balmont tried another speculative strike from long distance but it remained goalless at the break.

Lille had a penalty appeal turned down in the 55th minute after a cross struck Leighton Baines, with Franck Beria and Pienaar both booked as a dispute over the incident escalated.

Roberto Martinez introduced Romelu Lukaku for Pienaar and he made an immediate impact to set up McGeady, but Vincent Enyeama did well to save with his body.

Both teams continued to push forward at every opportunity but could not manage to conjure up a winning goal.

The two meet again on October 23 at Goodison Park.

Origi as good as Eto'o and Lukaku - Girard

    502861_heroa.jpg

Lille boss Rene Girard has suggested that his forward Divock Origi is as good as Everton's iconic striker Samuel Eto'o and €35 million man Romelu Lukaku.

The Toffees were held to a 0-0 draw at the Stade Pierre Mauroy on Thursday which kept Lille third in Group H - two points adrift of Roberto Martinez's leaders and one point behind Wolfsburg with three games to go.

Origi was bought by Liverpool last summer but loaned straight back to Lille and the Belgian put in a sharp performance against his future Merseyside rivals, prompting his coach to suggest he is on the same level as Everton's more illustrious attacking options."We thought that it would be tight and it was tight," Girard said of the 0-0 result. "We will go to Everton in two weeks hoping to get a result there.

"On the whole, we can be satisfied, we didn't lose. There are positive notes to take from tonight."In today's game, at least, I saw no difference in quality between Origi and Everton's Eto'o or Lukaku."

Origi plays with Lukaku in the Belgium international team and arguably impressed more than the former Chelsea man at the 2014 World Cup, when Marc Wilmot's men reached the last eight in Brazil.

Balotelli facing police investigation over alleged threatening behaviour towards a woman

    480711_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli is being investigated for allegedly making verbal threats towards a woman, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.

The Liverpool striker reportedly took offence to a woman taking photos of his Ferrari in Wythenshawe around 15.00GMT on Thursday.

Police confirmed to Goal that the matter is being looked into, but the attending officer is yet to submit a full statement.

Balotelli has a history of involvement with police and only last month was the subject of an investigation after suffering racial abuse on Twitter.

The former Manchester City striker recently returned to England after 18 months in Italy with AC Milan, moving to Anfield in a €20 million deal.

The Italy international has struggled for form upon his return to the Premier League, however, with his only goal for Liverpool so far coming in the Champions League against Ludogorets.

Balotelli was withdrawn at half-time of Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday and caused a stir by swapping shirts with Pepe while heading off down the tunnel, with manager Brendan Rodgers later stating the striker must continue to battle for his place in the side if he is to be a success at Anfield.

Diego Costa released from hospital following stomach illness

    468618_heroa.jpg

Chelsea striker Diego Costa is out of hospital following a severe stomach illness.

The Spain striker was admitted this week for treatment after returning from international duty with the bug.

He is also still receiving care on a groin injury he sustained while playing for Spain in their 4-0 defeat of Luxembourg last week, during which he scored his first international goal for his adopted country.

The injury ruled him out of Chelsea's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, with Costa also absent for the Blues' 6-0 Champions League win over Maribor in midweek.

It is as yet unclear whether he will be fit and available for selection for Chelsea's match against Manchester United on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho sarcastically greeted news of Costa's injured return from international duty, saying: "He will be in great condition in mid-November to be back for the national team. That's for sure.

"He will play for me when he has free time from the national team."

The Portuguese manager had previously expressed his concerns over Costa's selection for Spain, insisting the striker would benefit from treatment rather than more games.

He said: "After we beat Arsenal, Costa went to the national team, he played two big matches against Slovakia and Luxembourg, and he came back in conditions where he's not available to play for his club.

"Our medical department will take great care of him and in mid-November he will be in perfect condition."

Successful surgery for Bayern midfielder Thiago
