Parma 2-0 Inter: De Ceglie double increases pressure on Mazzarri

    541771_heroa.jpg

The uncertainty surrounding Inter coach Walter Mazzarri continues to increase after his side suffered a 2-0 defeat to a Parma side which had lost each of it's last six league games and had been defeated in all but one Serie A game this term.

With rock-bottom Parma coming into the game, coach Roberto Donadoni was also thought to be in danger of losing his job.

However, the former Italy coach's players responded with a resolute display at the Stadio Ennio Tardini, posting their first clean sheet of the season - much to the frustration of Inter boss Mazzarri.

De Ceglie gave Parma the lead after just five minutes, before the former Juventus man wrapped a much-needed three points up with his second against the run of play after Mateo Kovacic had struck the woodwork for Inter.

Mazzarri could now face difficult questions surrounding his future after Inter's toothless performance ensured they missed the chance to move level on points with third-placed Napoli. But Donadoni will be thrilled to see his side move off the bottom of the table ahead of Chievo's clash with Sassuolo on Sunday.

Parma made an ideal start when Andrea Rispoli crossed from the right for De Ceglie to bundle over the line. While buoyed by their lead, Parma's strong start was dampened somewhat when Massimo Coda limped off after appearing to turn his ankle 14 minutes in.

Joel Obi's diving header was then kept out by Antonio Mirante, with the Nigerian’s effort sparking the first real spell of Inter pressure.Mazzarri's team struggled to add to Obi's attempt on target, although they should perhaps have been awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area when Mauro Icardi appeared to be hauled down by Alessandro Lucarelli on the Parma skipper’s return from suspension.

Zdravko Kuzmanovic fired wide early in the second half before Mazzarri opted to add Brazil international Hernanes into his midfield prior to the hour mark. The former Lazio man's introduction helped offer some attacking impetus, but clear-cut chances remained few and far between for the visitors.

Perhaps summing up Inter's below-par display, Rodrigo Palacio missed the chance to register his first league goal of the campaign when he blazed Icardi's cutback way over the crossbar before Kovacic hit the post.

De Ceglie then sealed the three points with a finish from close range that found its way through keeper Samir Handanovic's legs - leaving Mazzarri with much to ponder ahead of Inter's midweek trip to Saint-Etienne in the Europa League.

:shocked:Barcelona 0-1 Celta: Larrivey strikes to make it two straight defeats for Catalan side

    541061_heroa.jpg

Luis Enrique was stunned by his former side as Joaquin Larrivey gave Celta Vigo a shock 1-0 win over Barcelona on Saturday.

The Barca coach - who arrived at Camp Nou from Celta in the close-season after the ill-fated Gerardo Martino reign - had been looking to get his side back to winning ways after their 3-1 El Clasico humbling to Real Madrid last weekend.

However, despite dominating throughout, the Catalans were ultimately left to rue missed chances as Larrivey struck in the second half to send them crashing to another potentially-costly defeat.

Luis Enrique handed a home debut to Luis Suarez following the completion of his much-publicised ban and although the Uruguayan was generally quiet, Barca still created a host of opportunities.

They hit the crossbar four times - twice each for both Neymar and Lionel Messi, the latter of whom continues to chase a record-equalling 251st La Liga goal.Celta, by contrast, were clinical and after a mix-up in the Barcelona defence, Larrivey slotted home in the 55th minute to settle matters.Despite Barcelona's late pressure, Celta held on to claim a memorable victory, leaving the early title tussle at the top of La Liga wide open.

Barca began the match brightly as Neymar went close twice inside the opening 15 minutes, first heading straight at Sergio Alvarez, before rattling the crossbar with an audacious effort from 25 yards.

The hosts failed to build on that early momentum, however, and gave Celta a period of respite, but they soon burst into life again in the 30th minute, with Messi unsurprisingly proving pivotal.

The Argentinian forced Sergio into a fine acrobatic save after collecting a well-placed cut-back from Neymar. Messi then saw a goal-bound effort knocked onto the crossbar by Jonny Castro. Barca's playmaker went close for a third time in the 34th minute, heading Suarez's left-wing cross over despite being unmarked.

Celta did well to frustrate their hosts, but it was Sergio who continued to be the hero for Eduardo Berizzo's men, denying both Messi and Neymar as the first half drew to a close.

Barca started the second half in determined fashion and they hit the crossbar for the third time just two minutes into the period, as Neymar met Jordi Alba's well-placed pass.

And Celta soon capitalised - Larrivey pouncing on uncertainty in the home defence after he had linked up with Nolito to slot past Claudio Bravo.Luis Enrique's side almost found themselves two goals down with 12 minutes to play, as Bravo palmed away a Nolito effort and substitute Charles headed the rebound over from eight yards.

Messi then hit the woodwork again with a long-range free-kick, but Celta held on to take all three points and make it three games without defeat for them and two losses in a row for the Catalan giants, who now trail Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the league.

Bayern Munich 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: Robben wins it late as BVB nightmare continues

    540811_heroa.jpg

Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben broke the hearts of Jurgen Klopp and Borussia Dortmund as they scored to give Bayern Munich all three points in a 2-1 over their rivals.

Returning Robben sealed the points form the penalty spot in the 85th minute as an influential substitute appearance from Franck Ribery - continuing to work towards full fitness after his recent injury problems - helped to turn the contest in Bayern's favour.

Poland international Lewandowski, who swapped Signal Iduna Park for the Allianz Arena during the close-season, equalised in the 72nd minute after Marco Reus – the subject of the latest tug-of-war between German football's two heavyweights – had put Dortmund ahead.

Reus was the focus of much of the build-up after Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed a possible interest in signing the Germany international earlier in the week.Dortmund coach Klopp reacted coldly to Rummenigge's words at his pre-match press conference, but Reus offered the prefect riposte when he headed home after a blistering 32nd-minute counter attack.

The visitors were indebted to goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller for preserving their lead before Lewandowski and Robben ultimately extended Dortmund's worrying Bundesliga slump that has now reaped just one point from their last seven matches.
Back in the Bayern side following a thigh complaint, Robben almost scored a brilliant sixth-minute opener as he ran onto Mario Gotze's backheel to rattle the crossbar via a vital tip Weidenfeller .

Klopp's team responded through Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who drove at a backpeddling Bayern defence to shoot narrowly past the right-hand post.
Weidenfeller clattered a clearance into the back of Mkhitaryan's head, forcing a spell of treatment for his team-mate, but the goalkeeper produced a far more useful contribution in the 24th minute - getting down to keep out a shot from Robben after a trademark cut-in from the flank.

Weidenfeller's opposite number, Manuel Neuer, produced a fine stop to thwart Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 30th minute after Mkhitaryan had beaten the Bayern backline. The champions did not heed that warning, though, and a minute later Shinji Kagawa sent Aubameyang racing away down the right, with his cross converted as Reus caught Mehdi Benatia flat footed.

Thomas Muller went agonisingly close to providing a decisive touch on Robben's low cross and then called Weidenfeller into action with a looping header as Bayern sought a quick response.

Lewandowski and Robben combined superbly to send Muller through on goal in the 38th minute, but Weidenfeller was equal to the task once more A twisting, turning Robben had the goalkeeper committed five minutes before the break, only for Sven Bender to preserve Dortmund's advantage with a crucial block.

Weidenfeller's excellent performance continued after the break, the shot-stopper keeping out Lewandowski's effort with his feet in the 51st minute when his former colleague should have scored. With an hour played, Sebastian Kehl found Kagawa only for the Japan international to skilfully turn Jerome Boateng and fire a low shot wide, while Benatia headed off target from close range.

The equaliser arrived when Neven Subotic – on at half-time for injured centre-back Mats Hummels – could only partially cut out substitute Ribery's throughball, allowing Lewandowski to lash home from the edge of the area.

And there was worse to come for Subotic as he clumsily hauled Ribery over for Robben to convert the decisive spot-kick with five minutes left, handing Bayern a four-point lead at the Bundesliga summit and leaving Dortmund languishing third-bottom.

Empoli 0-2 Juventus: Pirlo and Morata take advantage of Roma defeat

    540361_heroa.jpg

Juventus capitalised on Roma's defeat to Napoli to move three points clear at the top of Serie A with a 2-0 win over Empoli on Saturday.

Massimiliano Allegri's side bounced back from Wednesday's shock 1-0 loss at Genoa as Andrea Pirlo's stunning free-kick and Alvaro Morata's vicious strike sealed the victory in the second half.

With Roma having lost 2-0 at Napoli earlier in the day, the champions again have some breathing space over Rudi Garcia's men.

In stark contrast, Empoli - who saw Lorenzo Tonelli dismissed in stoppage time - have only recorded one win in their 10 top-flight matches to leave them hovering just above the relegation zone.

Chances were few and far between for much of the first half, although Piotr Zielinski did manage to force a smart save out of Gianluigi Buffon from 12 yards after 20 minutes.

Despite having only kept one clean sheet in their last eight games in Serie A, Empoli's defence remained resolute for much of the first period, with Juve's best chance coming just after the half hour. A powerful surging run from Morata allowed Arturo Vidal to latch onto the ball behind the home defence, but the Chilean could only pull his shot wide.

Vidal was the centre of proceedings again 10 minutes later, drawing a comfortable save from Davide Bassi with a low drive just outside the box, but the hosts continued to hold firm.

Juventus stepped up their urgency after the break, with Claudio Marchisio firing wide after Kwadwo Asamoah's cross had been spilled. And the visitors were celebrating just after the hour mark, when talismanic midfielder Pirlo stepped up to steer a stunning free-kick over the wall and into the net from 22 yards.

Massimo Maccarone forced a good save from Buffon three minutes later, but Juve continued their momentum and added a second 11 minutes later. A superb counter-attacking move saw substitute Carlos Tevez play in Morata, who curled home a powerful strike to seal the win and wrap up a hard-fought three points.

Tevez nearly got on the scoresheet himself six minutes from time, forcing a terrific save from Bassi with a powerful shot from the edge of the box.Tonelli was given his marching orders in the dying moments of the game, the defender hauling down Tevez, with Pirlo whistling the resulting free-kick just over the bar.

Atletico Madrid 4-2 Cordoba: Griezmann stars as champions cruise to win

    540381_heroa.jpg

Antoine Griezmann answered his critics with a fine performance in Atletico Madrid's 4-2 triumph over Cordoba on Saturday.

The France international had endured an underwhelming start to life in the capital following his big-money move from Real Sociedad, but was influential against Cordoba, netting his first La Liga goal for the club.

Champions Atletico looked comfortable throughout and it came as little surprise when they eventually took the lead in the 43rd minute, as Griezmann saw his shot deflect in.

Cordoba pulled one back early in the second half through Nabil Ghilas, but the vibrant Griezmann restored Atletico's advantage soon after with an unstoppable header.

Mario Mandzukic, another of Atletico's close-season investments, added the third and second-half substitute Raul Garcia headed in number four in the final 10 minutes.

Ghilas doubled his own tally right at the death, but his second goal proved to be nothing more than a late consolation, with the win moving Atletico on to 23 points - keeping them immersed in the five-way tussle at the top of the table.Despite coming into the match without a victory this season, Cordoba began brightly and went close to taking an early lead as Iago Bouzon headed just wide of the top-left corner.

Atletico swiftly took charge, though, creating their first chance in the sixth minute, as Arda Turan dragged a shot just wide after pouncing on a poor headed clearance.Diego Simeone's team went even closer to finding the breakthrough soon after, with Koke making the most of Cordoba's slack marking before striking the crossbar from 25 yards.

But although Atletico dominated possession, Cordoba looked threatening on the counter. The visitors broke through just after the half-hour mark and Ghilas found himself released into the area, but the Algerian fired a tame effort straight at Miguel Angel Moya from a tight angle.

However, the deadlock was finally broken two minutes before half-time when Simeone's men took the lead. After showing fine composure to evade a tackle in Cordoba’s crowded area, Griezmann saw his shot take a huge deflection off Luso and fly past the helpless Juan Carlos.

Cordoba looked encouraged at the start of the second half and they found themselves level in the 53rd minute.Ghilas met Fede Cartabia's free-kick delivery with a fine header looping header to restore parity, but Atletico were ahead again soon after.

Griezmann darted ahead of his man at the front post and nodded Juanfran's teasing cross beyond Juan Carlos in the 58th minute, capping a superb display with a finish to match.Atletico's third arrived just four minutes later, as Mandzukic headed in a Koke free-kick and they added a fourth for good measure in the final stages.

Garcia, who replaced Turan, produced delightful header to knock in Koke's lofted pass with 10 minutes left and, although Ghilas took advantage of some uncharacteristically poor Atletico defending to grab his second late on, the hosts held on for an easy win.

Lorient 1-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Bahebeck completes impressive turnaround

    539881_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain closed in on Ligue 1 leaders Olympique de Marseille with a 2-1 victory over Lorient at Stade du Moustoir on Saturday.

During the first period the French champions were completely outplayed and the hosts merited their half-time advantage, which was given to them when Raphael Guerreiro scored from a tight angle.

But PSG were a different team in the second period and drew level when Javier Pastore's pass unlocked the defence and eventually resulted in Edinson Cavani scoring.

Substitutes Marco Verratti and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck then combined for the winning goal, with the young forward slotting home from a tight angle after a fine pass from the Italy midfielder.

Blanc's side started more brightly and could have taken the lead twice inside the first 10 minutes, Benjamin Lecomte producing fine saves to deny Lucas Moura and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Yet the home side came back into the game and created their first chances when Walid Mesloub and Yann Jouffre hit efforts wide in quick succession.

Suddenly on the front foot, Lorient continued to enjoy the majority of the possession, with Valentin Lavigne curling an effort just over the crossbar.

They then had a strong penalty appeal refused after Lavigne went down under a challenge from Lucas Digne.

Undeterred, Lorient continued to press forward and they were rewarded with a goal in the 42nd minute as Guerreiro got on the end of Jordan Ayew's clever pass to slot home at the end of a superb move.

PSG unsurprisingly emerged from the break with added purpose and almost levelled when Cavani missed the target after capitalising on the hosts' failure to clear one of a succession of corners.

However, the striker did not have to wait much longer to make his presence felt as PSG levelled in the 60th minute.

Javier Pastore was the architect, his chipped pass finding Thiago Motta - who slid a volley into the path of Cavani. The Uruguay international uncharacteristically scuffed his first effort, yet Lecomte's failure to hold onto the ball proved decisive as Cavani slotted in the rebound.

Marco Verratti was introduced immediately after the leveller and almost instantly made his presence felt by setting up the second.

The Italian's ball in behind the Lorient backline ran perfectly into the path of Bahebeck, who nipped in ahead of Lecomte and slotted home from a tight angle.

From there, Lorient never threatened to get back into the game, with PSG seeing the remaining minutes out without alarm.

Everton 0-0 Swansea City: Ten-man Swans earn battling draw

    539201_heroa.jpg

Everton failed to score for the first time this season as they were held to a goalless Premier League draw by Swansea City on Saturday.
Roberto Martinez's men had managed to find the net in every league fixture this term before this weekend, but endured a frustrating 90 minutes against the Spaniard's former club at Goodison Park.

The Toffees saw clear-cut goalscoring opportunities limited in the first half despite dominating possession, and could count themselves lucky not to concede a penalty when Antolin Alcaraz appeared to handle the ball from a Jonjo Shelvey strike.

Swansea - who picked up their first-ever win over Everton in the League Cup earlier this season - looked brighter after the break, but were dealt a blow when Shelvey was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence with 18 minutes to go.However, Garry Monk's men held firm to cling on to a hard-earned point that sees them remain sixth, while Everton stay ninth.

Swansea returned to a more familiar starting XI following their League Cup elimination at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday, while Martinez could only include Romelu Lukaku among his substitutes after the Belgian injured a toe in last weekend's victory over Burnley.Samuel Eto'o led the Everton line after netting a brace in that 3-1 win at Turf Moor, and could have put the home side in front with a half-volley inside the opening minute - Lukasz Fabianski making the save.

Everton had the better of the early chances and Leighton Baines curled a free-kick just wide of the target from 20 yards after Eto'o had been felled by Ki Sung-yueng.
Swansea boss Monk has had a number of run-ins with officials in recent weeks and the visitors were appealing for a penalty in the 20th minute when a Shelvey strike appeared to hit the arm of Alcaraz, but referee Kevin Friend opted against pointing to the spot.Replays suggested Shelvey had every reason to feel aggrieved.Alcaraz had to be replaced by Muhamed Besic after coming off worse in a collision with Wilfried Bony - Gareth Barry switching to a central defensive role as a result - but it was Everton who ended the half in the ascendancy.

Barry's inexperience in the back four showed when he was almost caught in possession by Wayne Routledge shortly after the restart, before Shelvey fired wide having been teed up by Bony.Everton struggled to recapture their first-half dominance after the break, but finally gave the visiting defence something to think about when Aiden McGeady curled just wide after creating a shooting angle just outside the box.

Shelvey, who has already served a one-match suspension for accumulating five yellow cards this season, was made to pay for kicking the ball away in the first half when he received a second booking for cynically blocking James McCarthy in the 72nd minute.

Swansea adopted a more defensive approach after going a man down and will be satisfied with a point under the circumstances, but Everton - who saw Lukaku just fail to get on the end of a fizzed cross in the final seconds - may view the match as a missed opportunity to record a third successive league win.

Stoke 2-2 West Ham: Downing earns fine Hammers comeback draw

    539231_heroa.jpg

West Ham scored twice in 13 minutes to recover from two goals down and draw 2-2 at Stoke City to continue their good start to the season.

Sam Allardyce's men arrived at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday fourth in the Premier League having won each of their previous three games, including a victory against champions Manchester City last weekend.

But the London club looked a shadow of that side without injured star striker Diafra Sakho and Victor Moses' first Premier League goal in 14 months gave Mark Hughes' side a deserved first-half lead before Mame Biram Diouf added a second after the break.

Enner Valencia pulled one back on the hour mark before setting up Stewart Downing's equaliser in the 73rd minute after Diouf had missed a great chance to seal the points for Stoke.

This sparked a frantic finale as both sides pushed for a winner, but neither could find the decisive touch.

Sakho's absence may have hampered West Ham, but the hosts also started the match without their chief attacking threat as Peter Crouch served a suspension, along with defender Phil Bardsley.

But Stoke's replacements combined to create the first opening on 10 minutes.

Geoff Cameron was allowed to burst forward from right-back time and again in the opening exchanges and almost made West Ham pay when he teed up Bojan 15 yards from goal. However, his shot was blocked bravely by James Collins.

Bojan drew confidence from his early opportunity and delivered a dangerous low cross from the right in the 22nd minute after evading Morgan Amalfitano, only for his centre to somehow escape the toe of a lunging Diouf.

Stoke were on top and gained the lead their dominance deserved in the 33rd minute.

It was not pretty, but Moses cared little, forcing the ball over the line from close range as it fell at his feet via Bojan and Diouf, after Carl Jenkinson failed to clear Cameron's cross.

Diouf could have doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time, but was denied by a fantastic save by Adrian, after West Ham once again failed to cope with a ball into the box from Cameron.

However, there was nothing that Adrian could do to prevent Diouf from doubling Stoke's lead 11 minutes into the second half.

Aaron Cresswell was out-muscled by Jonathan Walters on the right and he then crossed for Diouf to head in from three yards.

The game looked to be getting away from the visitors until Alex Song won the ball with a robust challenge in midfield, releasing Downing. The winger's curling right-wing cross was headed in at the back post by Valencia to give West Ham hope with 30 minutes to play.

Diouf had a chance to put the game beyond the visitors 10 minutes later as he met Erik Pieters' perfect whipped free-kick, but he could not direct his effort on target.

And Diouf was made to rue that missed opportunity as Downing and Valencia combined once again to level. This time the Ecuadorian supplied the cross from the byline and Downing arrived in the box to smash home with his right foot.

West Ham's defence came under greater pressure in the closing stages as Stoke reverted to type with aerial balls into the box, but Adrian was not unduly tested.

Granada 0-4 Real Madrid: James hits wondergoal as Blancos hot-streak continues

    538501_heroa.jpg

A wondergoal from James Rodriguez helped Real Madrid to another impressive La Liga victory as they saw off Granada 4-0 on Saturday.

A brilliant start saw Cristiano Ronaldo give the European champions the lead, slotting home after just two minutes, and James added a second with a vicious volley 15 minutes before the break.

Karim Benzema added a third shortly after half-time, coolly poking his effort home following Ronaldo's flick.

Marcelo was denied by the crossbar four minutes later, before James took advantage of a defensive mix-up to poke home a fourth and double his tally as Carlo Ancelotti's side followed up last weekend's Clasico triumph in style.

The result represents Real's 11th consecutive win in all competitions, while condemning a toothless Granada to their fifth defeat in six games.

The visitors, who named an unchanged side from the the convincing win over Barcelona, did not take long to assert their authority in Andalucia, with Ronaldo opening the scoring early on.

Some good work down the right saw Daniel Carvajal dispossess Dimitri Foulquier, which allowed Benzema to cut back to the Portugal international inside the area and he marked the 700th match of his career with his 22nd goal of the season.

Granada came into the game having mustered just one win in their last eight matches and posed little threat to Ancelotti's men, who continued to press.

A wonderful clipped ball from Isco allowed Benzema to force a smart save from Roberto in the 23rd minute, before Carvajal blazed his shot over the bar from six yards following Ronaldo's brilliant backheeled pass.

But the lead was doubled just after the half hour, when a superb sweeping move saw Benzema tee the ball up for James inside the area and the Colombian smashed an unstoppable first-time volley into the top corner.

Real's dominance continued in the second half, and they were celebrating a third just nine minutes after the restart, Ronaldo finding Benzema with another audacious backheel, allowing the Frenchman to beat the offside trap and prod his effort past Roberto.

Granada's goalkeeper was once again a spectator two minutes later and had the crossbar to thank as Marcelo's 25-yard effort was denied.

The home side continued to struggle, but went close to pulling a goal back after 65 minutes.

Substitute Ruben Rochina fired over with an acrobatic volley, before a whipped cross from Juan Carlos was headed over by Abdoul Sissoko.

Fellow sub Javier Marquez should have done better six minutes from time, but was denied by an onrushing Iker Casillas, before Sergio Ramos hooked another effort off the line.

James wrapped up the win three minutes later by scrambling home at the far post after Ronaldo failed to connect properly with Arbeloa's cut-back, capping off a routine afternoon for Ancelotti's charges.

Hull City 0-1 Southampton: Wanyama makes it 10 Saints wins in 11

    538011_heroa.jpg

Victor Wanyama took advantage of an Eldin Jakupovic error as Southampton continued their fine run in a 1-0 Premier League win at Hull City.

Third-choice Hull keeper Jakupovic continued to deputise in the absence of Allan McGregor and Steve Harper in Saturday's game at the KC Stadium.

And his mishit clearance after just three minutes fell into the path of Wanyama, who cleverly guided the ball home from distance for the only goal of the game.

On balance of play it was a deserved three points for Southampton, who remain second in the table, as Jakupovic's opposite number Fraser Forster was rarely tested in his bid to impress the watching England manager Roy Hodgson.

Hull, who made one change from last week's 0-0 draw at Liverpool with Paul McShane coming in for Alex Bruce, failed to stamp their authority on the game and fell to a second home league defeat of the season.

Wanyama's early strike gave in-form Southampton a perfect start, and former Hull striker Shane Long - who moved to St Mary's in August - was a constant threat for the visitors in the first half.

The second period failed to produce much in terms of goalmouth action, but Southampton substitute Saido Mane should have made it 2-0 when he put a gilt-edged opportunity from inside the six-yard box over the crossbar with 20 minutes remaining.

However, Wanyama's third Premier League goal of the season proved enough for Southampton, who have now won 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions.

Following the Kenyan's opener, Hull enjoyed a spell of pressure and Hatem Ben Arfa should have done better when he stot tamely at Forster from the edge of the box on his favoured left foot.

But at the other end, Southampton nearly benefitted from another Jakupovic error.

The Pole hesitated after realising Long would reach a long ball first and was relieved the ex-Hull man could not direct his looping header into the goal.

Southampton looked assured in possession after the break as Hull tried desperately to get a foothold in the game.

The visitors almost had a second in fortuitous circumstances when Graziano Pelle's acrobatic overhead kick fell kindly for Steven Davis, who could only half-volley straight at Jakupovic from close range.

Hull's Mohamed Diame was perhaps lucky to escape punishment for a crude challenge on the heel of Dusan Tadic.

But Tadic picked himself up and his teasing cross found Mane in a great position in the penalty area, only for the forward to flick his shot into the ground and over the crossbar in the 70th minute.

The hosts had tame shouts for a penalty denied when Robbie Brady's cross appeared to hit Tadic on the hand, but Steve Bruce's side rarely threatened the Southampton goal in the closing stages.

Indeed, it was the visitors who went closes to scoring again, as Pelle wasted a great chance to round off the win in the 89th minute when he clipped a shot wide at the near post after a fine delivery from Mane.

It mattered little, though, as Ronald Koeman's men march on.

Arsenal 3-0 Burnley: Alexis stars as Gunners pull through

Alexis Sanchez continued his fine run of form for Arsenal as Arsene Wenger's side put in an impressive second-half display against Burnley to win 3-0 at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners had failed to collect a Premier League win on their own turf since the opening day against Crystal Palace and they appeared set for another afternoon of frustration against the bottom side in the division.

Burnley winger George Boyd was fortunate not to concede a penalty before half-time, while Alexis – who scored both goals in the 2-0 triumph at Sunderland - drew two fine saves from Tom Heaton. But it was the former Barcelona man who sparked relief around the Emirates Stadium in the 70th minute.

Impressive right-back Calum Chambers crossed for Alexis to score with a header, and the teenager added a second himself two minutes later with his first goal in senior football.Alexis fashioned space from Kieran Gibbs' low centre to net a 10th goal in 12 appearances in the final minute and add gloss to the scoreline, as Arsenal moved above West Ham into fourth, while Burnley are three points adrift at the bottom and five from safety.

Arsenal were unchanged from the team that beat Sunderland last weekend, while Burnley recalled midfielder Dean Marney following a hamstring injury and striker Marvin Sordell.

The hosts dominated possession but made little impression on Burnley until Kieran Tripper produced a vital clearing header to deny Danny Welbeck in the 21st minute after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had raced away down the Burnley left.
From the resulting corner, Boyd – already booked for an earlier foul on Santi Cazorla - flicked the ball with a stray hand but the officials remained unmoved.

Arsenal found a way through down the right again in the 26th minute, but Cazorla smashed a shot wide from Oxlade-Chamberlain's pullback after good work from Alexis. The visitors enjoyed a rare foray into the opposition penalty area five minutes later, only for Mathieu Flamini to make an important interception by prodding Scott Arfield's pass away from Danny Ings.

Alexis then twice went close, first cutting in from the left and forcing Heaton to push away his rasping drive before arching another 25-yard effort narrowly past the right-hand post.

Heaton proved Alexis' equal once more when the livewire forward raced into the box five minutes before the interval, as Burnley managed to reach the break unscathed.Ings was unable to capitalise on a moment of confusion between Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and Per Mertesacker in the 50th minute as Sean Dyche's men made a more assertive start to the second period.

The right flank remained fruitful for Arsenal but Alexis and Gibbs were unable to scramble the ball home from Oxlade-Chamberlain's latest cross.Michael Duff produced some remarkable defensive heroics for the visitors as he flung himself to ground to deny Cazorla with the goal gaping after Chambers' cutback.

The pressure eventually told, though - almost inevitably from the Burnley left - as Alexis got ahead of Trippier to net a fine header from Chambers' cross. The creator then became the goalscorer two minutes later, with Chambers on hand to steer home after a combination of Heaton and David Jones had denied Welbeck.

The Arsenal faithful warmly welcomed back Theo Walcott from his lengthy injury absence soon afterwards and the England man and fellow substitute Lukas Podolski drew magnificent saves from Heaton in the closing minutes as Burnley’s resistance faded, allowing Alexis to have the final word with a third goal.

Leicester 0-1 West Brom: Cambiasso howler seals points for Baggies

    538771_heroa.jpg

Esteban Cambiasso's bizarre own goal gave West Brom a 1-0 win as Leicester Cityr extended their winless Premier League run to five matches.

The toothless hosts struggled to make the most of their chances against Alan Irvine's men on Saturday, with Jamie Vardy in particular guilty of spurning a couple of good opportunities.

But ultimately they were undone by an error two minutes into the second period when Cambiasso inadvertently directed Wes Morgan's clearance into his own net.

Andy King could have earned Leicester a draw in the final 15 minutes but he headed straight at goalkeeper Ben Foster as Leicester's struggles continued.

West Brom, meanwhile, held on for their first win since the end of September.

Leicester struggled to provide service for their forwards and with top scorer Leonardo Ulloa starting on the bench due to injury, their only real sight of goal in the opening stages saw Danny Drinkwater blaze a shot over from 20 yards.

West Brom – unchanged from their last Premier League outing against Crystal Palace - had to bide their time but after growing into the game they almost grabbed a 17th-minute lead, as the in-form Saido Berahino forced Kasper Schmeichel into a smart save with a shot from the edge of the area.

The hosts were convinced that they should have been awarded a penalty a few moments later, but Stuart Attwell – refereeing his first Premier League game since January 2012 – failed to spot Craig Dawson's handball.

Leicester continued to press and they could have taken the lead in the 37th minute, but Vardy's spectacular overhead kick was straight at Foster.

West Brom almost capitalised on that let-off when Chris Brunt slammed a shot over the crossbar following Berahino's clever cut-back but they were ahead two minutes after the break, courtesy of a helping hand from Cambiasso.

Berahino squeezed a low cross into the area and, although Morgan had seemingly cleared the danger with a stooping header, the ball struck his Argentinian team-mate on the leg and crept inside the post.

Leicester were fortunate not to be dealt a further blow in the 66th minute as Marcin Wasilewski escaped punishment for catching Berahino in the face with his elbow, before King headed straight at Foster with just under quarter-of-an-hour to go.

The hosts did mount a spell of late pressure as they sought an equaliser, but West Brom were largely untroubled.
