Almeria 1-2 Barcelona: Neymar and Alba rescue visitors

    572671_heroa.jpg

Barcelona produced a late comeback to steal a 2-1 win from the jaws of defeat and bounce back from successive La Liga losses.

Luis Enrique's men were in danger of suffering a third successive league defeat for the first time since 2003 as Thievy Bifouma gave the hosts a well-earned first-half lead, but goals from Neymar and Jordi Alba in the final 17 minutes secured the spoils for Barca.

The visitors were far from their clinical best as Lionel Messi again missed a chance to equal Telmo Zarra's La Liga goals record just a few days after matching Raul's landmark tally in the UEFA Champions League victory at Ajax. And Thievy capitalised on their wastefulness in the 37th minute, producing a precise finish after charging away from the Barca defence.

The visitors appeared to be heading for another morale-sapping defeat in the league, but Neymar – introduced at the break along with Luis Suarez – bundled the Uruguayan's cross home in the 73rd minute to provide the spark for a turnaround.Jordi Alba netted the all-important winner inside the final 10 minutes, with Suarez integral again, keeping Barcelona in the hunt at the top.

Luis Enrique surprised many by opting to leave both Suarez and Neymar on the bench in Andalucia, although Barca looked perfectly capable going forward early on despite their absence.

Messi was denied his record-equalling goal in the ninth minute, though, as he was twice thwarted from close range by Ruben in the Almeria net, with the goalkeeper also palming a Munir El Haddadi effort around the post.

After that let-off, the hosts seemed to grow into the encounter and with both Thievy and Jonathan Zongo causing problems, Barca looked particularly uneasy at the back.

Thievy tested Claudio Bravo following a clever run in the 22nd minute, but the home side should have been behind by the half-hour mark.

Ivan Rakitic saw his header kept out by Ruben and from the rebound Messi inexplicably nodded against the crossbar despite having an open goal at his mercy.
And Almeria made them pay eight minutes before the break, as former Espanyol attacker Thievy burst onto Fernando Soriano's throughball and coolly slotted past Bravo after outpacing the Barca defence.

Luis Enrique responded by introducing Neymar and Suarez at half-time and the latter almost drew Barca level in the 61st minute.

Almeria failed to deal with a corner and Suarez produced an acrobatic attempt at the back post, with only the crossbar keeping the hosts' lead intact.Barca eventually restored parity, though, as Neymar turned in Suarez's low cross despite the best efforts of Ximo Navarro.

And the winner arrived soon after, as Alba steered in Suarez's cross to spare Barca's blushes.

Southampton 2-0 Leicester: Long double keeps Saints second

    572721_heroa.jpg

Southampton continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City at St Mary's.

Second half substitute Shane Long scored twice in the second half, breaking the deadlock with a well-taken finish before adding a second after combining with Victor Wanyama.

The win keeps Ronald Koeman's side in second place, four points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, while Leicester's slide down the table continues.

Saido Mane was restored to the Southampton starting line-up at the expense of Long in the only change from the team that beat Hull City last weekend.

Leading scorer Leonardo Ulloa returned to the Leicester side along with Jeffrey Schlupp, as David Nugent and Paul Konchesky dropped to the bench.

Koeman had urged his in-form side to dominate Leicester and they wasted no time in getting on the front foot.

Ryan Bertrand proved to be a dangerous outlet and Schlupp had to be alert to head the on-loan left-back's dangerous cross behind for a corner at the back post 20 minutes in.

Leicester were unable to keep hold of the ball as Southampton continued to pin them back, but Mane typified the hosts' lack of composure in the final third when he fired a shot over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.

Koeman was forced to make a change five minutes before the break, with Jack Cork replacing the injured Steven Davis.

Mane thought he had put Southampton in front seven minutes into the second half when he turned in a Bertrand cross, but the Senegal winger had strayed offside.

Leicester stood firm as the home side continued to dominate without being able to come up with an end product.

The visitors were living dangerously, though, and Morgan Schneiderlin's shot was deflected wide for a corner after Dusan Tadic's cross had fallen nicely for the midfielder in the penalty area.

And Southampton finally got the reward for an another impressive display when Graziano Pelle laid the ball off for the onrushing Long - on in the 68th-minute - and he kept his composure to finish with his left foot.

The Republic of Ireland international struck again 10 minutes from time to seal the points, beating the offside trap before calmly slotting beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

Chris Wood ought to have pulled a goal back three minutes from time, but he was somehow off target with only Fraser Forster to beat.

Long almost had a hat-trick with the last kick of the game when he fired just wide after a swift break, but his double ensured Southampton's sensational start to the season continues.

Burnley 1-0 Hull City: Barnes seals first Premier League win of the season

    572701_heroa.jpg

Ashley Barnes' fine second-half header gave Burnley their first Premier League win of the season as they beat Hull City 1-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Barnes, recalled in place of Marvin Sordell by Sean Dyche, headed home the decisive goal at Turf Moor early in the second half after sloppy defending from the visitors.

In a first half lacking genuine quality, the hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock through a Danny Ings shot, while Robbie Brady had to be on hand to clear off the line.

Barnes' header put Burnley into a deserved lead and forced Hull to raise their game, although the visitors' efforts in attack routinely ended in frustration and they ended the game having mustered just one effort on target.

Curtis Davies' back injury completed a miserable day for Steve Bruce, the central defender forced off late in the game, leaving his side with 10 men, Bruce having used all three of his substitutes.

Despite winning at the 11th time of asking, Dyche's men are still at the foot of the table, while Hull remain only two points above the bottom three.

Steve Harper, one of two changes for the visitors, was tested twice by Ings in the opening 20 minutes, but the experienced goalkeeper stood firm on his return from a torn bicep.

Harper's second save was almost undone as Paul McShane sliced the loose ball towards his own goal, but Brady was able to clear off the line.

After a first half devoid of clear goalscoring chances, the hosts showed renewed spirit after the break and opened the scoring in the 49th minute.

Kieran Trippier delivered a deep cross into the penalty area, and Barnes got in front of Ahmed Elmohamady to fire a bullet header past Harper.

Abel Hernandez failed to convert Elmohamady's cross soon after, while Bruce introduced Gaston Ramirez, Stephen Quinn and Hatem Ben Arfa as Hull looked to get back into the contest.

The decision to make all three changes quickly backfired on Bruce as Davies' attempts to execute an overhead kick saw him suffer a back injury.

Davies landed heavily and tried to carry on for a period after treatment, but was ultimately forced off with 20 minutes remaining, forcing Hull to reshuffle their defence as attack remained a priority.

Hernandez headed straight at Heaton before controlling an Elmohamady pass on his chest and turning neatly, but his effort from the edge of the area zipped wide of the left-hand post.

As the visitors' spirit dwindled, Burnley went closer to scoring the game's second goal in the closing stages, ultimately holding on for three points which will give eternal optimist Dyche plenty to enjoy.

West Ham 0-0 Aston Villa: Lambert's side earn first point in seven games

    572711_heroa.jpg

Aston Villa bounced back from their late defeat to Tottenham by taking a point from West Ham in a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon.

The pressure on manager Paul Lambert had been ratcheted up by the dramatic loss to Spurs, in which Villa conceded twice in the final six minutes following striker Christian Benteke's dismissal.

However, Villa produced a more disciplined defensive performance this time around to claim a first point since their 1-0 win at Liverpool on September 13, against a high-flying West Ham side buoyed by Diafra Sakho's recovery from a shoulder injury and Andy Carroll's long-awaited return as a late substitute.

Sam Allardyce's hosts always looked the most likely to score, but were frustrated by an impressive display from Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Guzan pulled off a string of saves, including a late one-handed stop to deny Carroll after the striker had headed goalwards following his stoppage-time introduction.

The draw - a repeat of last season's result in the corresponding fixture - sees West Ham extend their unbeaten league run to five games and move up to fourth in the top flight, while Villa remain dangerously close to the bottom three.

Gabriel Agbonlahor - restored to Villa's starting XI in place of the suspended Benteke - crafted the game's first real opportunity against the run of play in the 13th minute when he fired over the crossbar at the end of a surging run into the West Ham box.

West Ham responded well to that scare and tested Guzan on numerous occasions, defender James Collins seeing his near-post header saved before Mark Noble stung the American's palms with a fierce drive.

However, the best opportunity of the opening period fell to midfielder Stewart Downing, who went close to celebrating his return to the England set-up with a goal, only for his powerful shot from the edge of the area to be kept out following a well-worked move from the hosts.

Villa grew into the game as the contest meandered towards the interval and Andreas Weimann saw an effort punched away by Adrian.

Yet the visitors' defensive frailties were exposed in first-half injury time when Downing wastefully lashed high and wide at the far post following clever build-up play from Alex Song.

Midfielder Tom Cleverley curled narrowly over the crossbar as Villa emerged from the break with renewed confidence.

Lambert's men showed improvement in the second period but, for all their endeavour, the visitors found themselves hanging on in the closing stages.

Villa would have fallen behind had Sakho not displayed surprising profligacy from substitute Carlton Cole's cross, placing a free header wide.

Nathan Baker was taken off on a stretcher following an attempted tackle on Cole, yet Villa were able to hold on as Carl Jenkinson directed a late header straight at Guzan prior to the goalkeeper springing to his right to deny Carroll a dream return.

Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea: Costa on target at unhappy Anfield

    571551_heroa.jpg

Diego Costa’s second-half strike gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues had to come from a goal down on Merseyside, with Emre Can’s deflected strike giving the home side the lead, and Costa pounced with 20 minutes to go following Gary Cahill’s equaliser.

Brendan Rodgers' side came into the game looking to banish the memories of last term's corresponding fixture, Steven Gerrard's slip and the defeat which halted their trophy charge.

But they again shot themselves in the foot, with slack defending allowing Cahill and Costa to overturn Can's first Liverpool goal and move Chelsea a daunting 15 points clear of the Merseysiders.

Much had been made of Rodgers' team selection away to Real Madrid in midweek, with the likes of Gerrard, Mario Balotelli and Jordan Henderson recalled after being omitted from the starting line-up for the Champions League clash.

Yet it was one of the supposed second string to have impressed in the Spanish capital, Can, who put the hosts ahead early on with an effort that deflected in off Cahill.

The England man - perhaps fortunate to twice go unpunished for handball in the Chelsea area - atoned just five minutes later, though, bundling home despite Simon Mignolet's best efforts.

Jose Mourinho's approach was much more attacking than the April smash-and-grab - a reward coming after 67 minutes as a string of Liverpool lapses at the back were punished by Costa's clinical finish.

Still undefeated, Chelsea have now taken five points from a possible nine away to Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool to firmly underline their credentials as England's best this campaign.

Can was one of just three outfield players retained from the Madrid fixture and gave Liverpool a ninth-minute lead thanks to a sizeable nick off Cahill.

But Cahill quickly had Chelsea level, reacting quickest to prod towards goal after Mignolet had sharply denied John Terry from a corner, with technology confirming the Belgian had carried the ball over the line.

An already highly-charged atmosphere was ramped up as claims for a Cahill handball in the penalty area fell on deaf ears before Costa introduced himself to the contest by shoving Martin Skrtel towards an onrushing Mignolet, earning a warning from referee Anthony Taylor.

A semblance of composure returned to the game but Chelsea looked increasingly dangerous on the break - especially behind the adventurous Alberto Moreno at left-back for Liverpool - as they built pressure prior to the interval.

The second period began at much more sedate tempo, Costa's wayward overhead effort and Thibaut Courtois' save from Raheem Sterling representing rare flashpoints.

Yet the hosts were perhaps the architects of their own downfall as Chelsea moved ahead.

Substitute Willian found Cesar Azpilicueta on the left flank, with Glen Johnson out of position, and Philippe Coutinho did little to halt the Spaniard's progress to the byline.

Azpilicueta's cut-back was palmed into a dangerous area by Mignolet, allowing Costa to power home his tenth league goal of the season.

With Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert thrown on as Liverpool sought a dramatic equaliser, a blatant Cahill handball went unnoticed in the dying embers, leaving Mourinho to calmly acknowledge victory in stark contrast to his tub-thumping celebrations from last term.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-4 Bayern Munich: Muller hat-trick fires champions to victory

    572381_heroa.jpg

A Thomas Muller hat-trick inspired a dominant Bayern Munich to a comfortable 4-0 Bundesliga win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

A strong start from the visitors was rewarded midway through the first half when some good work from Franck Ribery allowed Muller to tap home.

Despite a couple of scares before the break, the visitors rarely looked troubled, and Muller was on hand to double the lead just after the hour, slotting home after again linking up with the imperious Frenchman.

And the 25-year old completed his hat-trick three minutes later after being played in by Mario Gotze, with Xherdan Shaqiri's strike compounding the misery of Thomas Schaaf's side, who have now lost five on the bounce.

The win extends the champions' unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions, leaving them seven points clear at the top of the table.

Having sealed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Roma in midweek, Pep Guardiola's men began proceedings at the Commerzbank Arena with confidence, keeping the ball with very little effort during the opening 15 minutes.Ribery provided much of the early pressure for the visitors, getting behind the defence several times early on as Bayern looked to build on a rampant recent run that had seen them net 23 goals in their first 10 games.

Despite a spirited rearguard display from the hosts, the Frenchman continued to cause problems, and he was at the centre of Bayern's opener after 22 minutes.
A bursting run down the left flank allowed the winger to tee up Muller with a low cross and he tapped home from close-range after Felix Wiedwald's initial save.

Frankfurt had not scored against Saturday's opponents in nearly 400 minutes of competitive football coming into the game, and they showed little sign of changing that record until the 40th minute.

Some excellent work on the left flank saw Haris Seferovic shake off the attention of Rafinha, but his low ball towards the near post was denied by a combination of Manuel Neur and Dante.

Neur was called upon again just two minutes later, denying Alexander Meier's low free-kick with a full-stretch save. But that was as good as it got for the hosts, with Bayern quickly resuming control of the game after the break.

And Guardiola's men doubled their lead after 64 minutes when a dinked ball over the top found Ribery behind the defence, and his squared pass was swept home by the impressive Muller. And a terrific afternoon for the German was completed six minutes later when Gotze's superb pass cut through the heart of the home defence, allowing the forward to slot home with aplomb.

Bayern's second away league triumph of the season was rounded off four minutes from time as former Frankfurt man Sebastian Rode set up fellow substitute Shaqiri, who fired it in with a low drive inside the box.

:love:Manchester United 1-0 Crystal Palace: Mata goal hands Van Gaal narrow victory

    572621_heroa.jpg

Juan Mata came off the bench to secure Manchester United’s first win in four Premier League matches with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

As in last weekend's loss to rivals Manchester City, tne Spain international began among the substitutes - but he emerged to stake his claim to be given a bigger role going forward by manager Louis van Gaal by firing a deflected winner in the 67th minute - five after joining the action.

Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni might have done better than palming Mata's strike into his own net and Neil Warnock's men were also left to reflect on a glorious chance passed up by former United youngster Fraizer Campbell before half-time.

Marouane Fellaini had a header cleared off the line before Mata sent relief around Old Trafford and condemned Palace to a fifth consecutive game without victory - only goal difference keeping them out of the bottom three.

A shoulder injury for Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling's red card during the Manchester derby compounded Van Gaal's selection problems in defence and the United manager paired youngster Paddy McNair and Daley Blind at centre-back, with Michael Carrick taking the Netherlands international's customary midfield spot.

James McArthur replaced suspended Palace captain Mile Jedinak, while Jason Puncheon came in as winger Wilfried Zaha was ineligible against his parent club.

McArthur's midfield partner, Joe Ledley, was careless in possession in the second minute, allowing Adnan Januzaj - making a fourth consecutive United start - to cut inside and fire a left-footed effort narrowly over the crossbar.

Palace forward Marouane Chamakh failed to make decisive contact with a free-kick after 14 minutes after Wayne Rooney had needlessly fouled Puncheon, but the visitors rarely ventured out of their own half with any intent during the opening stages.Equally, Palace's defence comfortably repelled much of what the United attack threw at them, leaving home left-back Luke Shaw to charge towards the massed ranks and drill narrowly wide in the 27th minute.

United's makeshift centre-back pairing presented Campbell with the first-half's clearest opening against his former club, but he failed to punish their confusion by lifting a shot over on the end of Joel Ward's long ball.

Rooney, largely subdued in his midfield role, side-footed wide from 20 yards in the 53rd minute after McNair had emulated Shaw by running at a deep-lying Palace defence.

United and Palace have both shown frailties defending set-pieces this season and the visitors were almost undone when Fellaini's header from a Rooney corner was blocked on the line by McArthur. The former Everton man was the target once more when he grappled with Damien Delaney to head over in the 62nd minute, immediately before United’s match-winner entered the fray.

Yannick Bolasie scuffed a volley from Puncheon's cross as Palace enjoyed a promising attacking but then Angel Di Maria passed to Mata and the playmaker's speculative shot evaded Speroni.

Mata clattered an 83rd-minute shot against the post before United closed out a triumph that lifts them to sixth in the table.

Martino: I'd always vote Messi for Ballon d'Or

    560761_heroa.jpg

Argentina coach Gerardo Martino says he will always vote for Lionel Messi for the Ballon d’Or.

Barcelona forward Messi claimed the award three years running between 2010 and 2012, but missed out last year to Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

The award is voted for by international team’s captains and coaches, as well as a select group of journalists, and Martino has already decided who he will name as his no.1 choice for the gong.

“I will always vote for Messi for Golden Ball,” Martino said just days after Mesis hit two goals against Ajax to equal Raul's all-time Champions League goals tally.
“Messi will continue to break records. It is a pleasure to see Leo, an Argentine, as the top scorer in the Champions League.

The 27-year-old is said to have struggled to meet the spectacularly high standards he has set for himself, but has seven goals in 10 Liga matches and four in four in this season's Champions League.Messi has been deployed slightly deeper by club coach Luis Enrique as Barca are adjusting to a new playing style but Martino believes the prolific No.10 will be back to his devastating best sooner rather than later, and that his latest record-breaking goals will relieve some of the pressure on him.

“He's certainly still thinking about finding best form again,” Martino continued.
“The two goals [against Ajax] and the record will be good for him mentally, but he will continue to insist on finding the level that was so high.”

Messi, who captained his country to the World Cup final earlier this year, will re-join Argentina next week for friendlies against Croatia and Portugal.

Aguero: I’ll stay until Manchester City win the Champions League

    544611_heroa.jpg

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero insists that he wants to stay at the Etihad Stadium until his side win the Champions League.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men tasted disappointment in the Champions League on Wednesday, slipping to a 2-1 defeat against CSKA Moscow and finishing the match with just nine men after Fernandinho and Yaya Toure saw red.

The result leaves City bottom of Group E and with the daunting task of needing to beat Bayern Munich and Roma in their final two games to have a chance of progression but Aguero is confident that his team can still make the knockout stages.

"Not only will I stay the four years to make it eight here in total," he told the Daily Mail, "I'll stay beyond that — until we win it.

"It's easy for everyone to suddenly decide it's the man at the helm who is to blame but I would say, in situations like this, when we haven't played well as a group, we are all in it together.

"The Champions League group table is not what we would have expected. We are not seeing the real City playing in Europe at the moment but we still have these last two games when we hope the real City will turn up.

"I guess that, if we don't turn it around, you would consider it to be the worst Champions League campaign the club have had but I have spent a lot of years in football and am aware that these things can happen, you get bad runs, and I am also aware that you work your way out of those bad runs and come out the other side positively."

City return to action on Saturday against QPR, a fixture that holds fond memories for Aguero after his late goal against the Rs clinched the Premier League title for his team in 2012.

"Whenever you mention the words 'Queens Park Rangers' it always comes to mind," he smiled. "That will remain etched on my memory forever. I've watched it back loads and loads of times, as you can imagine."

Sturridge targets comeback against Crystal Palace

    460732_heroa.jpg

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has set his sights on a comeback against Crystal Palace on November 23, declaring: "I'll be ready".

Sturridge has not featured for his club since their 3-0 win at Tottenham in late August, missing subsequent action with thigh and calf injuries.

The striker's initial injury sparked a club-versus-country row after Brendan Rodgers criticised England counterpart Roy Hodgson's training methods.

But Sturridge - who netted 21 goals in 29 Premier League games last season - featured in training in the build-up to his side's clash with Chelsea and is targeting the trip to Selhurst Park for his first-team return after the international break.

"I'll be ready for that one," he told BT Sport. "God willing, I'll be ready. I'm looking forward to it."

Liverpool have sorely missed Sturridge's goals in his absence, slipping well off the pace of leaders Chelsea, who they lost 2-1 to on Saturday.

    Mourinho: Chelsea won't finish unbeaten

    571241_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he "does not believe" in an unbeaten season and is confident his team will lost at least once in the league this season.

The Blues kept up their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime, coming from behind thanks to goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa, making it 11 games without a loss.

Many have suggested that Mourinho's side could emulate Arsenal's 'Invincible' season from 2003-04, but the Portuguese is not convinced.

"If this is the Spanish league or the German league, and you have two teams fighting it out, to be 15 points behind it would be over," he told reporters. "But this is England, and you can lose points every match.

"I think its possible to be champions but in modern football and the Premier League I do not believe in an unbeaten season. The defeat will arrive."

On his side's performance on Merseyside, he added: "I think it was a fantastic performance. It was an expression of our ambition, especially in the second half,. Every team would accept a point as a good result but we didn’t accept that. It’s three important points but sometimes you don’t deserve them. Today that was not the case and the best team won. Every player was fantastic.

“When they scored it was a not a drama for me or the team. We carried on playing well."

Mourinho: Injured Fabregas cannot join Spain squad

    572111_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has warned that Cesc Fabregas and Ramires "cannot" join Spain's squad for the upcoming international window as he played with an injury in Chelsea's 2-1 Premier League win at Liverpool on Saturday.

Fabregas is suffering with a hamstring injury while Ramires is battling an adductor problem, leaving the Portuguese coach to take a "gamble" on the duo in the clash with last season's runners-up.
Mourinho has also risked another injury war with Vicente del Bosque, following a very public fall-out over Diego Costa's involvement, by insisting that Fabregas should not join up with la Roja for their upcoming fixtures against Belarus and Germany.

"No he can't go," Mourinho told reporters. "Well he can if he wants, but he can't.
He added, regarding Chelsea's performance: "The team as a team, players as individuals, I think all of them gave a great performance and had the game under control.

"One point at Anfield, which normally every team would accept as a fantastic result, the team didn't accept that and came out in the second half to win the game so I'm really, really pleased.

"Every player was fantastic, but I need to tell you about Fabregas and Ramires. They both played injured. Maybe we will lose them for a match or two but they put themselves out there for the team.

"I think it's fair for me to give a word to Ramires and Fabregas and also to my medical department.

"The medical department did fantastic work on them and they were fantastic to resist the problems that they had.

"Fabregas, in this moment, I think maybe is a problem for the next match because we gambled everything on a hamstring problem and the medical department took the risk together with me, so a special word for them and for Ramires and Fabregas.

"Ramires’ is the same adductor injury. He knew it was important I started with him, and Fabregas is a fantastic professional. He gambled."

Van Gaal hints at buying new defenders

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted at moving for defensive reinforcements in January.

With injuries and suspensions playing havoc with his back line, the Dutchman has often had to field youngsters like Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair at centre-back.

Marcos Rojo – who plays at left-back for Argentina – has been one of his most consistent selections in the middle - though he is now injured - while Chris Smalling was criticised for a needless sending-off against Manchester City.

As a result, the Dutchman had to field Daley Blind as a centre-back in his sides clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday alongside McNair, leading to reports that Van Gaal will pursue Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar or Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels in the winter window.

Asked by reporters about making new signings, the United boss replied: "It is clear that a lot of things happen and you can judge better in good times than you can in bad times.

"Maybe you are right [about January recruitment] but we have to see [for] that."

However, Van Gaal - who wants to recall winger Nani from his loan at Sporting Lisbon - rejects the notion that his side are in a defensive crisis.

The Red Devils are off to their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, having taken just 13 points from their first 10 games.

Rodgers angry after Liverpool denied 'clear' penalty

    571971_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool deserved more from their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, claiming his side should have been awarded a late penalty for Gary Cahill's handball in the box.

The hosts were chasing an equaliser late on when Steven Gerrard's effort from the edge of the box appeared to hit Cahill's arm as the centre-back threw his body in the way of the ball.

But match referee Anthony Taylor did not point to the spot, leaving Rodgers and Liverpool frustrated at full time.

"We’re very disappointed," Rodgers told reporters. "We feel we deserved something from the game.

"The technology coming into the game has been great but it's bitterly disappointing. It's a big decision we didn’t get. It was a clear handball."

Liverpool went ahead early on through Emre Can, but Cahill quickly responded before Diego Costa's second half winner.

And Chelsea's comeback left Rodgers in no doubt as to who the current favourites to win the Premier League are.

He added: "Chelsea look very strong at the moment and they’ve got a very experienced squad. They look the strongest team for sure."
